The vehicle becomes a hazard due to faulty PCM/ECM software. The sudden loss of power and hesitation creates an unpredictable driving environment, leaving the driver and others vulnerable to T-bone collisions or rear-end accidents. This is a documented software glitch identified in Honda TSB 08-089 "MIL comes on with DTC P1009" yet the manufacturer refuses to provide the necessary software flash to rectify the safety hazard. The issue has been reproduced through live data logging. It is a persistent failure that occurs when the vehicle reaches operating temperature (188 degrees F) Timing advance will retard into the negatives, causing unpredictable hesitation, struggle with going up hills, and inappropriately retards when deaccelerating. Honda refuses to preform the software update despite a recent $3703 engine rebuild, citing the vehicles age as a reason to ignore the service warranty and known software defect.

BOUGHT VEHICLE IN AUGUST, USED WITH 136,000 MILES. THE FIRST WEEK, THE A/C COMPRESSOR WENT OUT. THE 2ND WEEK, THE CONDENSER. 2 WEEKS LATER THE CAR STALLED OUT. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSA AND WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. WAS ABLE TO GET IT RESTARTED AND IT WAS THROWING 4 CODES. P1009 61-1 62-1 83-1. TOOK IT IN UNDER DEALER WARRANTY. THE CHANGED THE O2 SENSORS AND GAVE IT BACK. 2 WEEKS LATER, SAME THING ONLY NOW IT WAS BURNING OIL AND GAS AND RUNNING REALLY RICH. THE OIL SMELLS LIKE GAS EVEN. THEY DID A WHOLE ENGINE SWAP AND A NEW STARTER, AMONG OTHER THINGS. AND 2 WEEKS LATER IT STALLED OUT AGAIN. AND THE CRANK SHAFT AND VTEC SOLENOID NEEDED REPLACED. AS WELL AS THE STARTER. 9 TIMES I'VE HAD IT AND NOW AFTER THE SAME BURNING THROUGH OIL AND GAS ISSUES IT'S STARTED SMOKING AND MAKING A GRINDING SOUND WHILE IDLING.
AC COMPRESSOR / CONDENSER ORIGINALLY WENT BAD SUMMER 2017 AND WAS REPLACED. WORKED FOR REMAINDER OF SEASON INTO START OF NEXT SEASON. SUMMER 2018 WENT BAD AGAIN AND MECHANIC REPLACED IT AGAIN, STATING POSSIBLE DEFECTIVE PART. WORKED AGAIN FOR REMAINDER OF 2018 SEASON. BEGINNING/MID 2019 CAR HEAT / DEFROST STARTED TO WORK IMPROPERLY, NOT DEFROST, CAUSED ENGINE TO MAKE STRESSING NOISE BUT NOISE WOULD STOP IF I TURNED OFF SYSTEM (AC/HEAT/DEFROST). JUNE 2019 ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE SAME STRESSING NOISE EVEN WHEN AC SYSTEM WASN'T ON. FINALLY, MONDAY, 7/8/2019 WHILE DRIVING TO A CAR RENTAL PLACE, MY 2005 HONDA CR-V SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY AT LEAST 5-6 TIMES TIL IT FINALLY BEGAN SMOKING FROM THE ENGINE AND I WAS FORCED TO PULL OVER AND GET IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. I AM TOLD BY MY MECHANIC THAT IT IS YET AGAIN THE AC SYSTEM. THE IS NOW THE 3RD TIME I AM BEING FACED WITH HAVING TO REPAIR THIS DEFECT IN THE CAR'S AC/HEAT/DEFROST SYSTEM, EACH TIME AT AN EXPENSE RANGING FROM $800.00 - $1,700.00. NOW I AM WITHOUT MY VEHICLE FACING ANOTHER COSTLY REPAIR BILL AND HAVING TO SPEND MONEY ON A RENTAL VEHICLE WHILE WAITING TO FIND OUT HOW TO PROCEED WITH MY HONDA CR-V. MY MECHANIC HAS ALSO INFORMED THAT OVER THE LAST NINE MONTHS OR SO, THEY HAVE SEEN AT LEAST 6-7 OTHER CUSTOMERS WITH HONDA CR-VS, COME IN WITH THE SAME RECURRING PROBLEM. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM ESPECIALLY IF IT'S OCCURRING TO MORE AND MORE HONDA CR-V OWNERS. AS A SIDE NOTE, MY HONDA CR-V ONLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 147,000 MILES ON IT.
I STOPPED AT A GAS STATION AND GOT GAS. I TURNED OFF THE AIR CONDITIONING BEFORE TURNING OFF THE ENGINE, AS ALWAYS. GOT IN AND STARTED THE CAR, TURNED ON THE A/C, AND IT BLEW HOT AIR. I KEPT TRYING IT ALL THE WAY HOME AND NOTHING BUT HOT AIR. THE NEXT DAY I NOTICED A TICKING SOUND UNDER THE HOOD WHEN IT WAS IDLING. MID SUMMER, BUT NO MONEY TO BRING IT IN. ONE MONTH LATER THE TICKING UNDER THE HOOD GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE SO I TOOK IT IN FOR A FREE A/C CHECK. TURNS OUT THE WHOLE A/C SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE REPLACED (ESTIMATE $1000) COMPRESSOR W/CLUTCH, ORIFICE TUBE, RECEIVER/DRYER, AND RE-CHARGE. THOUSANDS OF ONLINE COMPLAINTS AND POTENTIAL HAZARDS. THE AIR CONDITIONER STOPPED BLOWING COLD AIR. AN INDEPENDENT SERVICE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS THE COMPRESSOR BEARINGS FAILING INTERNALLY AND CAUSING A HOLE IN THE CASING. THE ESTIMATE IS $1350.00 TO REPLACE THE COMPRESSOR, CONDENSER, EXPANSION VALVE AND FLUSH THE SYSTEM OF FRAGMENTS THAT MAY HAVE ENTERED THE SYSTEM. AFTER A PHONE CALL TO AMERICAN HONDA I AM TOLD THERE IS NO SAFETY RECALL ON THIS ISSUE AND MY VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE IT'S WARRANTY PERIOD. SINCE THE REPAIRS HAVE ALREADY BEEN STARTED, I AM UNABLE TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED HONDA DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. HONDA'S POSITION IS THEY DO NOT HAVE CONTRACTS WITH INDEPENDENT SERVICE PROVIDERS SO THEY ARE UNABLE TO ASSIST ME.THIS 2005 HONDA CRV HAS 90,000 MILES AND JOINS THE RANKS OF OTHER HONDAS WITH SIMILAR UNCOMPENSATED REPAIRS FOR AIR CONDITIONER FAILURE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA CR-V. THE CONTACT STATED THE AIR CONDITIONER MADE A HIGH PITCH SOUND. THE DEALER RECHARGED THE AIR CONDITIONER; HOWEVER, THAT DID NOT STOP THE HIGH PITCH SOUND. AC COMPLETE FAILURE WITH NO WARNING AT 90000 MILES. ITS TWIN CAR, 2006 CRV HAD EXACT SAME PROBLEM AT SAME MILEAGE ALMOST A YEAR TO THE DAY LATER. $1400 REPAIR, SYSTEM TOTALLY SHOT WITH NO WARNING. HONDA DENIES PROBLEMS IN THESE VEHICLE YEARS, BUT PAID PART OF THE COST OF REPAIR AS WE NOTED TO THEM THAT IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE IN THE 2003 AND 2004 CRVS. *TR
PARKED IN A SPOT IN FRONT OF PARTY CITY, FOOT WAS ON BRAKE AND I PUT THE CAR INTO PARK. REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE AND THE CAR ACCELERATED INTO THE BUILDING. WHEN THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED BECAUSE I HIT A BRICK WALL I WENT TO SHUT THE CAR OFF AND IT WAS STILL IN PARK. I REMOVED THE KEY. FORTUNATLEY NO ONE WAS INJURED, MY 2 GRANDSONS WERE IN THE BACK IN THEIR CAR SEATS AND MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE PASSENGER FRONT SEAT. MY CAR IS GOING TO BE REPAIRED BY A HONDA DEALER AND I WILL STRESS WHAT HAPPENED BUT DO NOT FEEL CONFIDENT THAT THEY WILL LOOK FOR THE PROBLEM. THEY WILL PROBABLY SAY THAT I AM A CRAZY LADY AND MUST OF STEPPED ON THE GAS INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE. I ABSOLUTELY KNOW THAT DID NOT HAPPEN, THE CAR TOOK OFF ON ME. I ALMOST FELT LIKE IT WENT INTO AUTO DRIVE. WHAT CAN I DO-THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE!
2005 HONDA CRV AIRCONDITIONING SYSTEM COMPLETE FAILURE
MY 2006 HONDA CRV SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTED WHILE SITTING IN FRONT OF MY HOME. IT HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR AT LEAST 8 HOURS. THE FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND CONSUMED THE ENTIRE FRONT OF THE CAR BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT IT OUT. THE CAR HAD NO MECHANICAL PROBLEMS, HAD BEEN SERVICED BY A CERTIFIED HONDA DEALER REGULARLY (THE LAT TIME WAS IN APRIL 2009), AND WAS TURNED OFF AND LOCKED WHEN IT IGNITED. THE CAR IS TOTALED. THE FIREMEN WHO PUT OUT THE FIRE INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO SIGN OF VANDALISM, AS THE CAR WAS PARKED AND LOCKED, NO SIGN OF ACCELERANT WAS FOUND, AND THE FIRE WAS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, WHICH WAS LOCKED. *TR
MY A/C COMPRESSOR IN MY 2006 HONDA CRV BLEW UP CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE ENTIRE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM. THIS HAPPENED ON A 9 HOUR TRIP THROUGH TEXAS SUMMER HEAT WITH YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE BACK SEAT. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I FOUND OUT THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG SECOND GENERATION CRVS. HONDA IS SELLING THESE CARS KNOWING THAT THE COMPRESSOR IS DEFECTIVE AND HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL AND THEY REFUSE TO PAY FOR THE FULL COST OF REPAIR. MY 2005 CR-V HAD THE "BLACK DEATH" ISSUE LAST MAY OF 08. THAT SEEMED ODD ENOUGH TO ME THAT A COMPRESSOR WOULD GO THAT SOON IN SUCH A "RELIABLE" CAR. MY WHOLE FAMILY OWNS HONDAS. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST 3200 TO FIX IT. THAT MY COMPRESSOR "EXPLODED" (LOL, I AM NOT AN IDIOT, UNFORTUNATELY FOR HIM). I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO MY PERSONAL MECHANIC, WHO SHOWED ME THE LOCKED SPRINGS INSIDE THE COMPRESSOR, AND SAID IT WAS INDEED "ODD" TO SEE AN AC FAILURE THAT SOON. AFTER HE FIXED IT UP FOR 1300. I GOT A CALL FROM THE HONDA SERVICEMAN OFFERING TO MAYBE "WORK SOMETHING OUT". WELL, WITH A SMALL CHILD. I COULD NOT AFFORD TO BARGAIN FOR AC IN MAY IN SOUTH FLORIDA, SO HE WAS A TAD TOO LATE. I DID NOT KNOW, UNTIL MY COMPRESSOR WENT OUT AGAIN TODAY, THAT THERE WAS THIS ISSUE AND WAS KNOWN. I HAVE CONTACTED HONDA AMERICA, WHO WERE NO HELP AT ALL, AND THE DEALER WANTED TO CHARGE ME 105.00 TO DIAGNOSE IT, AND I WOULD NOT BE CHARGED IF I FIXED IT THERE. HMMM. HONDA AMERICA SAYS THEY WILL ONLY TAKE ESTIMATES FROM HONDA DEALERS AND NOT OTHER STATE LICENSED MECHANIC. SOUNDS VERY FISHY TO ME!! I AM NOW OUT AC (DRIVING 40 MILES TO WORK AT THE TAIL END OF THE FLU), AND WHO KNOWS HOW MUCH MONEY NEXT. THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR IT ALL THEY SAID ALREADY, AND THEY HADN'T EVEN GOTTEN A QUOTE. I FEEL LIKE I NEED TO DO SOMETHING! THE DEALER REPAIRED THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, ANOTHER OIL LEAK WAS FOUND NEAR THE ZE CH ACTUATOR CASKET A FEW MONTHS LATER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE OIL PRESSURE REGULATOR. THE FAILURE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED AND NOW IT IS EASY TO OBSERVE IF THE FAILURE WAS REPAIRED CORRECTLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,524 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 10,003.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. IT WAS MANEUVERED OFF THE ROAD AND RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.
