NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Honda HR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Started vehicle this morning and part of led digital dash cluster display (odometer, fuel, temperature, trip, miles) goes blank and wouldn't recover. Shut down and restarted and lcd display then had glitches where it wouldn't display correctly, partially incomplete. According to forums and Google searches, this is a known problem due to honda bad solder joints (also dealer admit on a post). Bad as mileage would not be recorded/updated during glitch. Need manufacturer repair/replace under recall due to possible federal issue.
The instrument panel with the fuel and mileage on it would go black or keep going back and forth to the original car code while I am driving. Next, the screen for my radio would shut down on me and restart itself while I am on the highway. Lastly, when I turn on my exterior lights at night, my interior lights that come on for me to see all the buttons went out for some of the buttons. The safety of myself and others was put at risk because the car could have shut down whenever someone was driving it. I took it to a Honda dealership and they did a diagnostic and the immediate attention result was Internal Electric Failure. But Honda Corporate declined to help me with repair assistance.
The forward camera mounted on the windshield failed which means all of the advanced safety features will not work that is a safety hazard when you rely on these systems. Looking on the internet, this seems to be a common problem and is very expensive to fix. There are multiple warning lamps that appear. They are Brake System, Auto High-Beam Problem, Collision Mitigation System Problem, Lane Keeping Assist Problem, Road Departure Mitigation System Problem, & Adaptive Cruise Control Problem. I don't understand how there are recalls when the rear camera does not work but not the front camera. They are both safety features.
Dashboard is blank. Where the miles, gas measure , etc usually shows up. Very concerning as you don’t see how much gas the car has, and the mileage information is not displayed.
2019 Honda HRV with 14,539 miles has been showing on the instrumentation brake failure; this warning only lasts 1/2 to 1 second with a chirp warning . Took to vehicle Honda dealership twice under warranty and could not be replicated. August 2025 took the vehicle to a local repair garage; replaced the two rear caliber motors and the electric power parking brake after the local garage conducted research on this problem on the internet. All replaced equipment are OEM equipment manufactured by Honda Motors. Solve the brake failure warning for 6 months before the brake failure warning appears on the instrumentation counsel.
Flashing all LPAS warnings. Also displaying 'brake system' on dashboard
My car randomly lost power on the road and I rear ended some one, my car lost power 3 times on the road.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that the infotainment system display became inoperable while driving. Additionally, the rearview camera became inoperable while in reverse(R). The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was not provided with official diagnostic information; however, the dealer informed the contact that the Audio Display Unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact informed the dealer that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V384000 (Back Over Prevention), which the contact related to the failure. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle would be repaired at the owner's expense. Additionally, the dealer advised the contact that the part needed to be ordered from the manufacturer; however, the manufacturer was unreachable. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Vehicle experienced critical ignition system failure while parked - the engine would not turn off despite repeated attempts over 20 minutes. The vehicle has a communication failure between the ignition switch and the Body Control Module/Keyless Access Unit, creating a stuck electronic latch circuit (B12D3 latch error). This is consistent with Honda TSB 20-116. The keyless start system warning appeared on the dashboard. Unable to shut down the vehicle through normal means, I was forced to manually pull the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box and then disconnect the battery while the engine was still running. This created an extremely dangerous situation requiring me to work in the engine compartment with live electrical systems. The vehicle lacks proper failsafe shutdown mechanisms. This communication failure and stuck ignition circuit poses serious safety risks including fire hazard, carbon monoxide poisoning if in enclosed space, and electrical system damage. No officially stated emergency stop solutions had worked for this vehicle included the triple press and long press.
Odometer display issue-I’m having an issue where the odometer/trip/fuel display is dark when I start the car and then it will flicker on and off.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while slowly pulling into a parking space, while in the process of depressing the brake pedal to stop the vehicle, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated and crashed into a building. There were no reported injuries, fire, or an air bag deployment. A Police report was filed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 38,500.
Premature of paint peeling -- Front part of roof area, few inches from the windshield. It is about 1 1/2 inches( wide) X 2 1/2 ( Long) inch and growing. There are other small spots area on left rear passenger door area and in the trunk area. The paint is flaking off and it keeps getting bigger. Few areas on passenger side around the windshield frame work.
My 2019 Honda HR-v CVT failed due to premature belt deterioration exactly as described in Honda Service Bulletin 21-047. The failure happened only two months after the 7-year extended warranty period. Honda has denied a goodwill assistance despite this being a known safety-related defect. The belt failed while my elderly mother drove. They refuse to provide any assistance in the matter.
*Multi-use camera for safety fails Honda HRV 2019 due to overheating and or other malfunctioning reasons. Known failure, but Honda refuses to recall the cameras. Causes lights on light up LKAS, Collision Mitigation, Road Departure, Adaptive Cruise, Auto High-Beam. (Of course battery checked first, but battery in good condition) Firestone and Christian Automotive Brothers diagnosed nothing wrong with car apart from camera. Honda refuses to accept 3rd party diagnostic report. Honda refuses to inspect known defect without price gouging customer upwards of $2K. Right Honda of Scottsdale AZ refuses to reset/recalibrate and insists on all customers with this known issue pay $200 diagnostic PLUS new part $1,232.15 + tax (part 36160-T7A-A04) PLUS labor in excess of $1,000. No warning, etc prior to the lights going on associated with defective camera. This is unethical car sales, price gouging for defective safety feature, and puts driver and others at risk. This is a safety feature of the car and Honda's respsonbility to recall and resolve at no expense to customers. Please formally open an investigation to inform me swiftly if this $2K + malfunctioning safety feature will be recalled and resolved. Thank you. The instrument cluster "flickers" due to a bad connection. This cluster contains the odometer, fuel gauge, and other vehicle information. It does not work at all when the outdoor temperature is cold. I took this to my Honda dealer and they state it was a bad connection and I would have to pay to replace the whole cluster for $1800. This is unacceptable and Honda should have to fix this as it is a known problem - this has the potential to cause an accident for someone to run out of gas in busy traffic. And not being able to see the odometer/mileage or oil life indicator is not acceptable. This has been a life of the car problem which has gotten worse and is no longer working no matter the outside temperature.
The camera associated with the Honda Sensing features has failed, resulting is multiple warning lights and non functioning safety features.
The digital instrument cluster in this 2019 Honda HR-V suddenly failed, resulting in the loss of the speedometer, odometer, and dashboard display functions. The failure occurred without warning and is not due to wear, misuse, or routine maintenance. Operating the vehicle without a functioning speedometer or odometer presents a serious safety risk, including potential speeding, traffic violations, and accidents. Other warning indicators integrated into the digital display may also be inaccessible, further compounding the safety hazard. Honda has diagnosed the problem and quoted a repair cost of $2,166.08. Goodwill assistance was previously denied in my case, citing that the vehicle is out of warranty and not subject to a recall. The vehicle is regularly used to transport family members, including a pregnant passenger (due March 2026). Continued operation in this condition is unsafe and unacceptable. Other Relevant Information: Dealer/Service Center: Herb Chambers Honda 720 William T Morrissey Blvd Dorchester, MA 02122 Repair Quote: $2,166.08
The fuel gauge on the right hand side malfunctions in cold/wet weather, causing information such as distance until empty, to become illegible. When this happens, the display also flickers rapidly, which may be problematic to some with epilepsy. Here are links to several Reddit threads of others who have experienced this: [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Front View camera behind rear view mirror suddenly stopped working. All advanced safety mechanisms stopped working, replacement is said to be $2500 with no known reason for this part to stop working besides it "went bad".
Unknown cause. Multiple smart features prompted errors. Replacing battery did not solve issue. Replacing camera temporarily solved issue, but returned.
Several warning lights came on. No collision or glass damage occured. Took it to the dealer. DIAGNOSIS was CODE U3000-49 "multipurpose camera unit/millimeter wave radar internal electric failure due to heat. They said fix it would be $2237.49. However, they said they could not fix it then because the part is back ordered. Due to so many cars with this problem. I went online and see other 2019 hr-v owners having the same issue.
The car failed inspection due to rust which had formed at the attachment points where the body is bolted to the chassis. The importance of this location made this rust a severe safety risk. The problem existed on both left and right sides of the vehicle. The fact that water was channeled to these locations with no opportunity for drainage or rust protection is a clear design flaw. The vehicle had only 46,000 miles. Every repair shop I took the car to said "such a young vehicle should not be rusting like this". They all suggested that Honda should be responsible to fix this because the car was poorly designed.
Verified by dealer failure of multipurpose camera unit . As documented by Honda dealership the failure is due to internal electric defect (DTC U3000-49). This is a safety related electronic system and is not result of wear, misuse, or maintenance- related issues.
I have major peeling paint issues on my 2019 Honda HR-V with white paint. The top of the car ( roof) and in the hatch area.
Car has 40000miles, started posting warning for lane keeping, lane departure, Adaptive Cruise control, emergency braking, and the car disabled all the features in ADAS, also posted brake system warning indicator. The honda dealer diagnosis the multi-purpose camera failed. Car has low miles, and should not have failed this soon, and also creates dangers for the driver, the dashboard lights all these warning, quite concerning. Cost was also extremely expensive, over $2k to repair.
The paint on the roof of my Honda HR-V is chipping and peeling. The problem appeared suddenly and has continued to spread. The rest of the vehicle’s paint remains intact, so this seems to be a defect in the roof paint or clear coat. While it does not trigger warning lights, the exposed areas put the vehicle at risk of rust and corrosion, which may affect safety and durability over time. The damage is visible and the roof is available for inspection upon request.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000(Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. An unknown local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that the parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Steering become stiff and sticky while driving it was sudden and I was unable to turn the steering wheel specifically to the left. The other driver stopped short so an accident was avoided. Brought the car for service and was told there is a gearbox issue with swelling causing stiff/sticky steering and the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. It is the same issue that newer model Honda HRVs have been recalled for. It is a serious safety issue. This car has only 56,000 miles on it. There is no way their safety recall on this exact situation should not be expanded to vehicles prior to 2022. It's a serious safety issue.
I have only 40,000 miles on my 2019 Honda HRV. Due to utilizing the lane assist, my rack and pinion, inner tie rod ends and steering shaft assembly have all came lose. When I drive, I can turn my steering wheel to the right and left one inch and the wheels do not move. I need to move my steering wheel more than an inch for the wheels to engage due to everything being faulty and loose. I believe this stems from the vibration caused in the lane assist. I will now need to do a $2,000+ repair on a element of my vehicle that should last between 100,000 - 150,000 miles where my vehicle is only at 40,000 miles. I do not have invoice for the repair yet as I'm shopping around due to high cost. I have a video showing what the incident is, but the form won't allow me to send videos. I'm happy to send that video in a follow up.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while attempting to open the front passenger’s door the door handle fractured and fell off the vehicle. Upon inspection of the door handle, the contact stated that there was a brace missing used to secure and keep the door handle intact. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer to be inspected. The dealer informed the contact that there was no staff available to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was scheduled a second appointment to have the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
I am writing to request your assistance regarding a paint peeling issue that has developed on my 2019 Honda HR-V (currently at 50,320 miles). Recently, I noticed significant paint peeling at the top of the hood — in the exact same area previously identified in the 2016–2018 HR-V models covered under Honda’s paint warranty extension. When I contacted Honda Cares, I was informed that my VIN is not included in that warranty extension. This is very disappointing because I made a conscious effort to protect my vehicle by purchasing the clear coat warranty at the time of sale, believing it would cover or help prevent defects like this. Unfortunately, I was told that this issue is also not covered under that protection. This situation is particularly difficult for me, as I just finished paying off my car last month and am preparing to retire this year. My plan was for this HR-V to be my retirement vehicle, and facing an unexpected repair so soon is a financial hardship I did not anticipate. Furthermore, I am aware of the lawsuit filed with the NHTSA concerning paint defects on Honda vehicles. Given that my paint is peeling in the same area identified in that investigation and covered under the prior warranty extension, I respectfully request that Honda extend that same paint warranty coverage to my vehicle as a gesture of goodwill and fairness. I chose Honda for its reputation for reliability and quality, and until now, I have been very pleased with my HR-V. I hope you will consider my circumstances and the documented history of this paint defect, and help me resolve this issue so I can continue to enjoy my vehicle into retirement. Thank you very much for your time and understanding. I look forward to your response. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Since the 2019 Honda HR-V vehicle check engine light has come on numerous times, the vehicle is squeaking, the tire lights have come on numerous times, airbags light is on, the fuel cap light has come on Engine temperature light comes on Any more questions can be emailed or called. Thanks kindly.
Not sure of the cause, but my vehicle burst in the flames unexpectedly. Prior to fire, the vehicle was running very well and up to date on maintenance. We were driving and smoke started coming from the hood. Suddenly the screens/monitors turned off on the vehicle. We pulled over, off the street as quickly as possible. Heard popping sounds, exited the vehicle. Then it burst into flames. Police showed to the scene first. Fire department arrived shortly after to put out the fire.
The entire odometer and fuel display on the right flickers with random characters and goes dark for long periods of time. Not knowing how much fuel seems to be a problem? Took it to the dealer and they indicated this is a common problem but have no remedies.
The gauge cluster sometimes fails to work at all and flashes multiple times when returning to normal. I cannot see speed, mileage, fuel level, oil life, or car temperature. It is a continuing issue.
The Multipurpose camera that controls all advanced driver assistance fuctions malfunctions causing these systems to intermittenently not work properly or at all. It has caused the vehicle to fail to brake, and brake on its own without cause. Upon doing my own research I found numerous reports online of other owners of this make/model having the same issue. The problem first occured when my vehicle reached about 50,000 miles. It has been ongoing since. It caused damage to my vehicle when the automatic collision assist failed to brake for a vehicle that stopped abruptly in front of me. The alerts that these systems are not working do not always show up when the vehicle starts. Sometimes they stop working in the middle of the route. I have been in correspondence with the dealership who informed me the cost to fix this issue is $1968 (this does not include the $150 diagnostic fee while the vehicle was being serviced for a recall related to the fuel pump - I already paid to the dealer that fee and for which I've attached my receipt.) There is clearly some issue with the part that was installed by the manufacturer. It makes the vehicle unsafe to drive not knowing if these systems will fail or malfunction at any given moment. I do not feel as the customer this should be my responsibility to have repaired, as many others report the same issue with this part. There is clearly a widespread issue that needs to be addressed in a recall in order to replace the faulty part.
I bought this car new in 2019. It was never in an accident. While driving normally, the car started throwing warnings saying the lane keep assist has a problem, the collision mitigatuon system hhas a peoblem, the auto high beams have a problem, the road departure system has a problem. I paid Honda in Surprise AZ $210 for a diagnosis and they told me that it needs a new U3000-49 Multipurpose camera unit will cost $1,730 to replace and install and possibky another $1,420 for a new SRS unit. The car was never in an accident, and both of these should not be breaking after just 5 years of ownership. Clearly the multipurpose camera unit and also likely the srs are defective and should be recalled.
Component/System that failed: Fuel mileage range display began fluctuating erratically after a fuel pump recall repair on [XXX], at Open Road Honda, Edison, NJ. Is it available for inspection? Yes. How safety was put at risk: The fuel range display jumps unpredictably (30+ miles up or down), especially after refueling. This causes a driving distraction by pulling my focus from the road. Has the problem been confirmed by a dealer or service center? Open Road Honda confirmed the issue, stating the system lost 63,000 miles of driving data during recall repair and won’t stabilize until 100,000 miles are driven. A second Honda dealer said this is not normal and recommended diagnostics. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer or others? Yes. Inspected multiple times by Open Road Honda and reviewed by their District Parts & Service Manager (DPSM) from American Honda, who called it a “normal characteristic” post-recall. Honda Corporate opened a case but found the explanation unreasonable. Warning lamps or messages: None. When symptoms first appeared: Days after the recall repair in February 2025. Summary: I provided photo/video evidence and returned multiple times for service, but the issue remains unresolved. The head mechanic told me to “just not look at the mileage range.” The problem began after the recall and continues, causing distraction. I request investigation and a proper fix to restore the vehicle’s original condition. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Transmission fill cap plug keeps blowing out and leaves open hole into transmission for rain, debris and another road debris to enter into transmission. My car has 80k miles and has been happening every 5-10k miles resulting in having to buy new transmission fill cap and have a transmission flush almost as often as needing to change the oil

The odometer display/gas gauge goes blank for long periods of time while driving. When I took it to the dealer, they said, “Oh yes that is an HRV thing,” so they have seen this before clearly. It is a safety concern to not be able to see the odometer and gas gauge to know when fuel needs to be replaced in the vehicle.
i made an appointment with Garden State Honda of Passaic, NJ located (225 River Drive Passaic, NJ 07055) after waiting months for an appt. finally took my car today 01/20/2025 and when at the Counter rep named Chelsea state that their honda dealer could not honor nor repair my car due to how I purchased the car in an action.. My understanding is even though I purchase a salvaged vehicle the issue is with a recall part from Honda not the car..Now my vehicle has been parked for months waiting for this appt. Has too many lights due to this fuel pump recall and I cant even get my inspection sticker since its now expired with NJ due to the many lights the car has on. I need some help and guidance as to what can be done

all the lights for the honda sensing systems (LKS, ACC, road departure, etc) are on periodically with notifications that they were not working. There is nothing wrong with the battery or anything else. They are gonna charge me 1,500$ to get this fixed when it’s their equipment that’s at fault.
I am not sure what part of the system is failing. While driving on the high the car just stopped no warning just stopped it went from 55- 60 miles an hour on 287 all the way to 20 and then stopped. This was all random. Then it was taken to a independent service who ran the codes and none of them stayed so i drove the car again and all that happened before happened once again. The independent service told me its the transmission and they are not sure why its happening he noted that these hondas have transmission issue

I’m writing to express my concern regarding a recurring issue with the instrument cluster on my 2019 Honda HR-V. Specifically, the far-right section of the cluster — which includes the odometer and fuel gauge — frequently flickers or fails to display entirely. This makes it extremely difficult to monitor fuel levels or mileage, and I’m particularly concerned that the odometer may not be accurately recording the vehicle’s true mileage. After researching this issue, I’ve found that this is a well-documented problem among HR-V owners, with many attributing the failure to cracked solder joints on the instrument cluster circuit board. These cracks are believed to result from thermal expansion and contraction, exacerbated by the use of lead-free solder, which is more brittle than traditional alternatives. Given that this issue stems from a design and manufacturing decision — not from any misuse or neglect on my part — I feel strongly that this should be addressed as a manufacturer defect.
