I have a 2023 HR-V 5DR 2WD EX-L 5800K miles - bought 3/18/2023 Took my vehicle into my dealership to let them know I am having an issue with my steering as it sticks and then jerks when driving at any speed.
The steering wheel "sticks". Lane control is off and when driving and making any slight adjustments or beginning to turn, you have to break a slight sticking of the wheel. When stopped the steering wheel does not stick
Used my defroster in my car to defrost the front in back windows. Back window completely shattered. Not only did it put myself at risk, it also put others in the road at risk. This could have caused me to be distracted and have an accident or glass could have flown at someone else’s car. There were no warnings that the glass would randomly shatter. I contacted my dealer about this but have not received a response.
Car sitting in driveway at home and back window shattered. No force to it or nothing that hit it
Rear window of vehicle, above rear license plate, found shattered in garage this morning. The car has been in a closed garage since Sunday,2 days ago. On Sunday it was a rainy day and the rear window defroster was on, parked in the garage and closed the door. This morning temp outside went to 32f. I went out to get in the vehicle around 10:15am and found window shattered.
I was driving to work this morning and was almost there when I heard a loud noise/smash. I look in my rearview mirror and see the entire rear windshield to be shattered. It shattered on its own, nothing was pelted at my vehicle (I checked the trunk of the car to be sure) and no rear defroster was on when this happened. This is crazy that a recall hasn’t been issued as of yet for this issue since it looks like so many people are having this happen to them. It is not safe and also isn’t something we should be worrying about when having a brand new vehicle.
Rear windshield bursted while I was leaving my house. I was going like 5 mph.
The back (rear) window spontaneously shattered without cause. The vehicle was not in motion at the time of the incident, and nothing stuck the window. The safety of the occupants was put at risk from the pieces of glass which fell throughout the inside of the vehicle. Additionally, if the vehicle was in motion, when this occurred the loud noise of the window breaking may have caused the driver to become distracted and cause an accident. The car is available for inspection, but is scheduled for repair in the next day or two. An insurance claim was filed, but no representative is coming to inspect. There was no notice or warning prior to the window failing.
Intermittently, the steering wheel feels 'sticky' and any steering adjustments feel jerky. It's as if pressure builds up preventing typical steering adjustments from feeling smooth as they should. I just started experiencing the problem recently again when the temperature dropped below 70F. The problem also seems worse when driving on the highway, which is particularly concerning. Yes, I think Honda needs to address this for safety. Simple lane changes and steering adjustments should not be this difficult. I have owned over a dozen vehicles, and this is the first time I have ever experienced this. Especially with a vehicle with less than 20K on it.
Steering is 'sticky', the steering wheel occasionally gets stuck and overcompensates.
The steering is jerky and clunky at all times - whether the lane departure feature is on or not. The steering wheel requires more effort to overcome needed correction. I have read others have reported the same problem.
While driving home, I was using my front and rear defroster due to inability to see. Once I was parked at home, I turned off defrosters and then turned off my car. I heard a boom come from the back of my car. I went to inspect and the entire back glass was shattered with a small hole in the glass. There was no collision, nothing thrown at my car, no vandalism. No warnings on my dash prior to use. Thankfully I was safe in my front seat away from the incident and parked in a safe place.
The back windshield exploded with no warning while I was driving to work on a rainy, 60 degree morning. No other vehicles were close by and no items hit the windshield. Glass flew everywhere including the cargo area and back seat. Luckily there were no passengers or cargo in either of those areas. There were no prior issues with this car. The issue was initially reported to our insurance but upon finding out about this issue, we reported it to the dealer from whom it was purchased. The dealer inspected the vehicle and authorized the repair based on "good will". Later on, the service rep did confirm that Honda was aware of the problem and that for legal reasons they could not comment. They are replacing the defective rear windshield with the same part number, which I assume will lead to the same issue occurring down the road. We plan on trading in the vehicle once it is repaired and returned to us.
I WAS SITTING AT A RED LIGHT MY 3 YEAR OLD SON AND THE BACK GLASS JUST SHATTERED FOR NO APPARENT REASON! THE POLICE CAME AND SAID IT WAS A MANUCATURER'S DEFECT!

I was stopped at the stoplight and my rear windshield spontaneously shattered. I heard a pop, similar to a balloon sound, and the rear window had been completely shattered all the way through.
On 10/27/23, while parked in a residential driveway, the back window to my 2023 Honda HRV Sport spontaneously shattered. The temp at the time was around 65 degrees and it was approximately 6:45 AM. I did have my defroster on that morning, however, it the rear defroster was off by the time I was parked in the driveway.
While parked and unoccupied, the rear windscreen unexpectedly exploded. This incident was not caused by any external force or impact, and it occurred without any warning signs or previous issues with the vehicle. I had been out earlier that morning - light rain with back defogger engaged.
After turning on my defroster, my hatch window spontaneously popped and shattered. No marks of anything hitting my window.
Rear window has now shattered spontaneously TWICE in less than 1 month after the first repair. Once on 10/27/23 while driving on the interstate at 70 mph, clear road conditions, clear sky, 65 degrees outside and then on 11/17/23 while sitting in our driveway - raining this day and temperature 43 degrees. Both incidents are pictured below.
I parked my car in my drive way, closed the door and went inside. When I came back outside about 3 hours later, I came outside and my windshield was completely shattered. Nothing hit it or was bumped into it.
Incident date: 10/25/2023 Car: 2023 Honda HRV •Failure: rear window / tailgate window Made appointment for 10/27/2023 at dealership for them to check and replace •risk was limited because we had installed UV protection by sunstoppers, and that did not allow the glass pieces to fall in. The only real risk experienced was limited visibility because the glass shattered which made it less safe to drive. Some glass pieces did end up falling off when the shattering happened which I assume would have been a risk to other drivers if there had been traffic around us. • Incidents like ours have been reported and Honda has issued a letter to dealerships to collect evidence and parts for research. Because we found the incident strange we researched and found this on NHTSA’s website; we brought it up with the dealership and they stated they were unaware and their system showed nothing about it. We called the Honda TIS number they have on the letter to see if they were interested in the parts they mention and they too seemed unaware and simply suggested we tow our vehicle to the nearest dealership to follow up. • We have reported the incident to a Honda dealership and to Honda TIS. We have an appointment for 10-27-2023 for them to check and give us follow up steps. • there were no warning signs or prior symptoms. We were surprised by the incident and took us a second to even realize what had happened because of how sudden it was. It sounded like an explosion.
Rear windshield shatters. No collision, nothing hit car, no theft, no vandalism. Driving 40 mph in Blizzard conditions. All Wheel Drive, rear defroster on, rear wiper on. 2023 HR-V Sport. The first time operating both rear wiper and rear defroster synchronously. A sudden unexpected pop & entire rear windshield shatters. Rear wiper then began pushing glass into rear hatch area. Turned off wiper, continued driving. As this issue has been reported numerous times in the new generation 2023 Honda HR-V's, I was not shocked. Just A bit startled. My conclusion is use of inferior glass or rear wiper hole causing an issue or rear defroster exceeding parameters. Outside temp was 30'F, wet heavy snow falling with 8 inches by 16:30, 10/25/2023, Minot, ND. Photo taken with iPhone 14 in heated garage. Shattered rear windshield is being reported by many owners of the new generation 2023 Honda HR-V. In looking at rear the shattered windshield, most astonished how very thin the glass is, as compared to most auto glass. An attempt at weight reduction? Honda of America needs to address this asap, it is unsafe! I was not injured, just startled by the sudden unexpected loud pop & shattered glass then falling into hatch area. From retired DoD civil servant, "integrated electronic systems mechanic," (Minuteman 3 ICBM's), please seriously consider this observation. Very thin gray tinted rear windshield glass. Hole for rear wiper located through bottom center of rear glass. Rear defroster temp parameters to high for thin glass? Possible combination of all three. Again, 1st time rear wiper & defroster used synchronously. Blizzard conditions at time of rear windshield failure.
" I purchased a brand new 2023 Honda HRV from your facility and I'm already having problems with it. My issue is that anytime I use the rear defroster, after it cools, it causes the Paneling and Side view mirrors to brutally crack and warp. Online I saw others have the same exact issue. It starts with metal warping, every time, and ends in the back window being blown out. I don't understand why there's not a recall for this apparent issue. I went on the internet and saw that many others had the exact same issue, but no recall was set into play. This has been an ongoing issue for Honda since 2019 in their HRV line; or at least, this is where the complaints began. I recently got a recall in the mail, stating something about a seatbelt, but not for the more important Defroster issue. What can or should I do about this?" This was an email I sent to a Honda Customer service agent at the dealership I bought it from, after also contacting Customer Service by phone. To date, there have been ZERO attempts to resolve my concerns. I have not received any phone calls or emails back to even let me know they cared. Currently, I refuse to use my rear defroster on this model EVER, for fear that my rear window will explode while driving.
My rear windshield just shattered on its own
- Rear windshield completely shattered while parked outside a shop for less than 5 minutes. Car was totally visible and it appears the window shattered on its own as there were no objects found inside the car. The HR-V forum site online (linked below) is showing many complaints with the exact same problem and showing photos that look exactly like my car does. [XXX] - My rear vision was impaired while driving to a safe location. Had it shattered while I was driving, it could have caused a serious accident, or if I had a passenger in my backseat, they could have been hit with broken glass. Car is also exposed to elements until it can be fix, which will be at least a week. - Dealership claimed there was no recall and that any repair would be billable and recommended I go through my insurance. -Vehicle has not been inspected. I will be having it repaired by Safelite Auto Glass. - No warnings of any kind. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The car was parked in the driveway with the rear defroster on. The rear window shattered. There were no prior impacts or collisions, and the ambient temperature was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the dealer having a previous case of this happening, they are unwilling to cover it via warranty. Honda's support was also unwilling to cover the incident under warranty.

Rear window exploded when using defective rear defroster.
I was driving to work when the rear window spontaneously shattered. It was about 33 degrees and I had the rear defroster on.
My daughter and I were driving down a highway when we felt and heard a very loud boom followed by the sound of my rear glass falling into the back of my car. We drove to a safe location and notified the police of what happened as we were unsure if something or someone had done something to my car. The Franklin County Sheriff’s office did come out and take a report. We didn’t find any damage to the body of my car only the shattered back window with zero evidence of any object causing this. I have turned it into my insurance and I am waiting for my back window to be replaced.
As you increase your speed your steering wheel becomes hard to steer. It acts like it gets stuck. Almost caused an accident as wheel would not respond quickly.
The car's rear window blew out on its own while parking. Nothing hit it.
Similar to many people with their submissions, my rear windshield exploded this morning. It was about 60 degrees Fahrenheit and I turned on the defroster. After turning it off, I drove out of my neighborhood at 25 mph and then went up to 35 mph when I suddenly heard an explosion. Thankfully, there’s a gas station I could pull over to to assess the damage because I thought it might’ve been a blown out tire. When I did look in my rear view mirror, the glass was completely shattered from the inside. The pieces started falling off into my trunk. From what it seems like the consensus is possibly due to the defroster. However, I wasn’t aware this was a problem that’s been going on. It’s not like I could’ve predicted that the glass would shatter. Luckily no one was sitting in the back of my car.
Outside temperature in the 70s had recently just rained and rear window was foggy. I turned on the rear defogger after about two minutes or so started smelling something burning thought it was car exhaust. I parked the car and the rear window shattered. There was a hole the size of a baseball, and when I went out to look, everything fell into the trunk area, Honda claims this is not a warranty issue and it’s not covered
Rear windshield shattered shortly after parking car in apartment complex lot. I had just exited the vehicle when I heard a loud smashing sound. Nothing had any impact with the windshield. I was running the rear defrosting previously while driving on the freeway about 10 mins prior to parking.
I was sitting in my car after just driving from a destination. I had used the rear defroster previously to the back windshield exploded. I had just turned the car on was about to put it in drive when I hard a loud pop then the spidering sound of glass. After that the glass proceeded to start falling into the back hatch. There was nothing around me I was in a parking lot at 6:45ish am. I looked for an object in and around my car there was nothing. I discovered burn marks on the glass. I searched for a recall for this issue but there is not one. After research I am not the only one with this problem. If I was driving when this happen or someone was in the back seat someone could have been seriously hurt. I visited the local Honda dealership to see what they could do.They told me they couldn’t help me because there is not a recall for this issue and that I couldn’t prove it was the rear defroster was the problem.
I have a 2023 honda hrv sport and last night October 20th my rear window just shattered while I was driving. The temp outside was 50 and it was rainy. I was using my rear defroster and I heard a pop sound and the next I knew the glass shattered.
The rear glass exploded on its own while driving after using the defogger. There were no objects that hit it.
2023 Honda hrv I have a sticking steering wheel. It seems to happen in colder wet weather. The steering wheel seems to kind of get stuck, and you have to really pull to get it to free up, but then on the next turn of the wheel, it sticks again. So it’s a constant battle. For me it happens at higher speeds, 55mph or higher. This has been happening about a month. I made an appt with my Honda dealer, they couldn’t find anything wrong, no codes. They gave me no invoice.
My back windshield shattered spontaneously. When I got into my car and closed the driver door I heard a huge crash and saw a huge hole in my back window as well as the whole window shattered. The only thing I did differently that morning was I used my rear defrost. I have used that multiple times last winter with no issues

On October 19 I was on my way to work and noticed my back window was shattered. I wasn’t sure if it was intentional so I called the police. The officer arrived and looked at the vehicle he observed and found no signs of a break in or that the window had been intentionally bashed in. I called my insurance and they they sent someone to replace the window since I did have glass coverage. I looked on Google to see if there were any faulty issues with the windows and it pulled up several other Honda HRV 2023 models were having the same problem. I immediately contacted the dealer and sent them an email and called but no response
I was at job I’m parking garage waiting for shift to begin when my back windshield exploded for no reason at all. Scared me!!! Just completely shattered! I am very upset I have to miss a day of work to see who is going to fix this problem. I will not pay for something that shouldn’t have happened. I will pursue legal action if I have to.
