My rear glass shattered on its own.I got off work got in the car closed the-drivers side front door and the rear glass shattered. it was not bumped or hit by anything. I called Honda dealership and luckily I has extra warranty that will cover the cost of the replacement window.
Rear window shattered due to defroster overheating
When driving at highway speed (65mph), attempted to make subtly changes to stay within the center of my lane. When trying to do this, the steering wheel "ticks" or "jerks" instead of smoothly adapting. When keeping within my lane while the highway lane curved, I was able to stay in it, but every adjustment to stay in the middle of the lane during the curve ticked and almost over corrected, making it difficult to navigate smoothly. I am constantly adjusting due to the over correction of the tick/jerk. This issue seemed to go away after slowing down to 35mph, but happened again at any higher speed. No warnings/messages/ or symptoms made themselves known prior to this event. Has yet to be taken to the dealer for this issue but planning to schedule an appointment after the Thanksgiving holiday. Unable to take my car on an elongated car ride as the problem causes stress to the driver.
steering wheel at times will momentarily get stuck and require added force to overcome resistance. This happens every time the vehicle is driven but it is mostly suttle. On one occasion correction resulted in the vehicle leaving the lane I was traveling in. There were no warning notifications from the vehicle.
Rear windshield shattered without any impact. Car was parked. Windshield was not cracked or scratched in any way.
Unknown. Came out to car and back window was shattered. Looks like it exploded outward.

Rear window exploded after turning on rear defrost about 5 minutes into drive time.
Car was bought in November/December 2022. Honda was experiencing supply chain issues so had to wait to get a new 2023 model. Around November 2023, the rear windshield glass exploted and shuttered. At first I was told by Honda that they have never heard of that issue; but when I told them that I went to Google and the same situation is happening all over USA, then they said, yes, we know about the problem on this model. They fixed at no cost to me and they provided a rental car as well. I told them that prior to the explosion there was a strong burning smell - later they told me there was probably fumes leaking from the rear windshield glass that was about to explode. In addition, this new car has had a recall (something about the driver's safety belt) and I also mentioned that the steering wheel makes a noise when it goes left or right... the steering wheel feel heavy too. I was then told that that is another issue that certain Honda models are also experiencing. To repair that it will take 6 months for the replacement part to come from Asia so they were not sure if I was able to just keep driving the car (safely) after I made the decision for them to order the part OR I needed to leave my car in their dealer for the length of time until the part arrived. Too many things are happening with the new car... I just want to get a replacement vehicle.
I was driving on the highway and then I heard a loud boom, and looked in my rearview mirror and my rear window was shattered. I had to pull over and there was no sign of any impact. I was so terrified that I called the police to come out to inspect it and they did not see any sign of impact either. I called Honda, and they advise that my warranty does not cover the glass since the glass does not come from them but a 3rd party. My dealership also did not assist, so I am most likely going to come out of pocket for what seems to be a known issue.

The insurance company was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 6,610.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Rear windshield How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? yes Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not sure Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No Used my Honda HR-V 2023, to pick up my partner, I used the defroster on the way to the location, which was a 10 minute ride. Came back home which took another 10 min, parked outside in our driveway then heard a loud crack went to investigate and saw that it was the rear windshield that shattered completely.
We bought a 2023 HRV last year and yesterday out of the blue my back window exploded while it was parked. It’s clearly shattered from the inside out. We took it to our local Honda service center and they are researching the issue. Now I’m without a car while they figure out what they’re going to do. I’m worried if they do replace it, that this can happen again when we’re in the car. We transport our grandkids regularly and and their safety is our top concern.
The front passenger belt stop latching. I called the dealer. The part was on backorder. I have an appointment on Tuesday 1/23/24 to fix the front buckle. I also told them when riding in the car the middle back seat belt dings like someone is back there. There is no one in the car. Now the back middle seat has a green box saying that someone is latched in the buckle. Again, there is no one in the back seat. I cannot safely put my kids in this car. The only warning that the front buckle gave was the seat belt was not latched. It would not hook on so my oldest would have to sit in the back seat.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in a parking lot at night, the contact heard a loud explosion. The contact exited the vehicle to check the surrounding but had not seen anything unusual. Two days later, the contact noticed that the rear windshield had shattered after activating the windshield wiper. The contact stated that the rear windshield had shattered without impact. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,100.
Rear window totally shattered. At approx 7:30 am, the rear defroster was used to defrost the rear window. It was approx 35 degrees F in the morning. After driving the car approximately 4 miles. The car was parked. After returning to the car approx 2 hours later the entire back window was shattered.
Rear window shattered/blew out. Was cold out and Rear defroster was on.
I was sitting at a light after using the rear defroster and the rear window exploded from the inside. Honda will not take any responsibility even though there are many complaints.
After leaving work on 11/13/23, I came out to my car which had been parked since 9am and the rear window (back window) was completely shattered. This was the first day since last year that I had turned on my rear defroster on the way to work. There were no other markings, and no object on the ground that could have shattered the window. I called the police, who agreed that It did not look like criminal action had taken place. The security of the school which I work at filed an incident report and are in the process of evaluating cameras. Upon reading online, I became aware that many owners of the 2023 HONDA HRV have had a similar issue regarding the rear window shattering after using the rear defroster.
My 2023 Honda hrv was parked. The weather was clear, sunny and around 50 degrees. I entered my vehicle and closed the door. The rear window shattered out of nowhere. The car was not turned on. The automatic start was not used. The car was off and parked. Nothing hit the car. All I did was close the door and it shattered. I had the rear window replaced immediately. There was no warning. No cracks in the window. The car has approximately 11,500 miles on it and is in excellent condition. There was glass everywhere and I was scared to drive the car with my children in the backseat. As I would drive, more glass would break off. Honda was not notified as this happened on a Sunday and I could not wait until they were open on Monday to get it fixed.
On 11/12/2023 my wife was driving the 2023 Honda HR-V from the grocery store approx. at 9:30 AM in the morning On the way home she turned on the rear defroster and the back window completely cracked and shattered. If occupants were in the back of car they could have gotten glass on them. My wife also couldn't see out the rear window while driving. My wife called the police and told them. she thought maybe someone tried to break into the car. The police looked at camera footage at the grocery store at found no one near the car. I'm trying to go through my insurance to replace the windshield. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.
I had the heat on in my vehicle and as I was driving I heard a loud popping sound which startled me. Once I pulled over, I realized my rear windshield shattered. There were no warning lights before the window shattered. The only thing that kept the glass together was the window tint. This issue has been known and reported by multiple drivers.
Came to a stop sign heard a pop noise in back of car, back windshield is all cracked like crackle glass
I used the defroster for 10-15 minutes as I could not see out the back window. I turned it off, parked, and idled while answering email. I heard an explosion. Checked all windows, no gusts of cold air, the cars near me hadn't moved. I got out and looked around at car windows tires, in the dark it looked ok. I thought it was Disneyland and also thought I hope noone got shot. I walked away for 90 minutes for my son's hockey game. As I walked to my car. A car passing me illuminated my shattered windshield.
This is my daughters HR-V (which is identical to my sons which was involved in my first report earlier this morning). She was driving to work this morning when the back glass blew out of the vehicle. Same problem with the same type of car under similar circumstances.
The rear window spontaneously shattered while the car was parked. on 11/9/2023. Took the car to Safelite and a replacement window will not come in until 11/20/23. Called Headquarter Honda in Clermont, Florida where I bought the vehicle and was told they have no information about this kind of damage having occurred before due to any defect and that there are no recalls about shattering rear windows in the 2023 HRV.
A few minutes after having parked I heard a loud sound. I thought something heavy had fallen on my car. When I got out of my car to inspect I saw the rear glass with a large hole and the rest of the glass completely shattered and barely holding on. There was nothing inside the car, nothing anywhere near (or even far) that could’ve hit the glass to shatter it. No one nearby.
Rear window shattered while parked in garage with no impact
rear windshield shattered, have saved most of the original glass. it is sitting in my garage if anyone is interested in inspecting it. Dealer is now aware of it no warning of any kind
Driving to work my rear window suddenly shattered. I thought something had gone through the glass but nothing was discovered in the boot. I called police, to make sure . They confirmed that likely it was a defective window. I had run the rear defroster for about 10 minutes prior to the shatter. Thankfully, it was not raining and no one was hurt. The rear window glass continued breaking off crackling and falling — as I drove, but the original hole was on the drivers side about half way up the window. I went to Honda and they had no rear windows for 2023 HRV’s available, and said they have never seen or heard of any rear window defects. I am having an off market rear window installed tomorrow at a glass repair place. Later, I found an HRV on line forum where many people have had the same exact same thing happen. The forum suggested reporting the incident here.
Steering sticks when turning the wheel giving a jerking feel
On my way to work this morning, I heard a loud shattering sound and when I looked back, my back windshield was cracked everywhere. There wasn’t anything thrown at my vehicle from any direction. I pulled over shortly after and saw the bottom and sides of the windshield was chipping away and the glass was falling down, along with the seal through the outside of my car. On the inside, the glass was still cracking and slowly falling out. There was no warning or any indication that this would happen.
The back glass exploded. When I looked online, there are many complaints about this dangerous occurrence. If our grandchildren had been in the back, they might have been killed. Honda surely knows of this problem and needs to take care of it. Our local dealer hadn't heard of it (type in Honda HR-V 2023 back glass explosion), but I don't trust them.
I was driving on a highway with the rear defroster on and heard a loud "pop" sound. I pulled over on the shoulder and noticed the rear windshield was completely shattered in the middle. Glass was everywhere. I called my local Honda dealership and they told me that it is not covered by the warrantee and that I should take it to a local glass repair shop or to safelite. There was no warning.
Rear window shattered on its own without warning. Vehicle was not moving. It apparently is a known issue and Honda has a bulletin regarding the issue. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Rear Window How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Glass shattered on its own Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? N/A. Window shattered, not reproducible Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not at this time. Details sent to dealership so the Honda rep can investigate. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No. Happened without warning.
Driving at 65mph when rear glass explodes spontaneously. No projectile cause as there was no hole in the glass. Impossible to see out of the glass after it shattered. Glass starts to fall into the trunk, putting back passenger and 2 month old baby at risk of glass shrapnel. There was no warning that this would occur. Taken to dealership and technician stated that they have seen this a lot with Honda/Acura rear glass and sunroofs, but that Honda has denied every claim to fix or recall the defective glass.
Rear windshield shattered on its own while driving. No other cars around and no projectiles found in the vehicle. Glass is shattered with large hole (baseball size) in top left, similar photos seen online of other HRVs with similar windshield damage. Hole continues to enlarge while driving home, now half of the back windshield collapsed into the vehicle. Honda dealership was called today in PHX, AZ on 11/8/23 at which time their service department states they have no knowledge of this occurring - yet dozens of complaints here on NTSB report the same.
The rear glass randomly shattered at a stop sign. Nice sunny day in SoCal 75° and clear. Our safety was not immediately in danger but we couldn’t drive the vehicle. Honda roadside came and towed it to a dealership close to our house. It was approved by the “claim adjuster” and repaired about 3 business days later. Very scary.
Back window blew out due to faulty defrost system. I had to have it replaced , took 2 weeks because there are no inventory of those windows. Cost me $500 plus rental car fees and time
While driving my car this morning, I turned on the rear windshield defroster and the rear windshield glass shattered. I stoped the car to check if something felt in the rear windshield but there was nothing. Only glass everywhere.
Wife was driving to work this morning when the back windshield suddenly shattered. No impact from road debris was involved nor was any warning issued by the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the rear window shattered. The contact stated that there was no impact to have caused the window to shatter. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,500.
I was traveling roughly 20 mph on a smooth road with no traffic just after 7:00AM . The temperature was in the 30’s (F) and it had snowed so I had the rear defrost setting on. The rear windshield spontaneously shattered, I was not underneath any trees and I did not locate any foreign objects in the trunk or near the rear of the vehicle. Luckily no one was in the back seat or they may have been showered with glass fragments. There was also no traffic on the street or I could have been involved in an accident from the stimulus.
The rear windshield exploded spontaneously after the car was put into park. The whole thing was completely shattered and slowly collapsed in on itself. There was no damage to it, nothing hit it - it just exploded. This luckily happened after the car was in motion or otherwise serious injury or other damage may have occurred. Apparently the window system also connects to airbag system and could have caused further issues had that been triggered. The dealership, even though the car was under warranty, told me they would not replace the windshield at their cost. I plead for them to ask Honda to cover it - I was only in possession of the car for 15months, brand new! The dealership sent photos to Honda and Honda did determine they would fix the window; however, there are lawsuits being established as this is a recurring issue and Honda should be liable for putting out cars in such condition. My concern now is that this will happen again and could cause additional damage to the vehicle, others around, or anyone inside.
At higher speeds steering wheel sticks and requires higher than normal force to break it free. I tried turning off all safety features to no avail.
When driving, at any speed, the steering sticks when trying to correct within the lane. If I'm driving straight and the car drifts a bit, it takes more effort to make minor corrections. I've seen reports that this happens more during colder weather. My concern is that this is my daughter's car and I fear this could cause an accident if the roads are wet or it takes even more effort than normal to correct and she over corrects. We have an appointment with our dealer on Monday. There are no warnings for this in the vehicle.
The steering is sticking and jerky without the lane assist, especially when it's cold out. Instead of normal smooth steering correction while driving, it builds up pressure while trying to correct, then it feels like a slip, then a jerk. It makes me feel very unsafe and I always now have to have a firm grip on the wheel
The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the contact heard an abnormal sound like a bang or an explosion. The contact looked in the rear-view mirror and saw that the center of the rear windshield had shattered. The contact arrived at her destination and became aware that the shattered glass was scattered inside the rear compartment of the vehicle. The contact stated that there was a burning plastic odor inside the vehicle however, the contact had not activated the rear windshield defroster. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or glass repair shop. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 13,642.
I can feel my steering wheel sticking to the left and right. It's not the lane departure assist, it just sticks. I've taken it to my dealership twice and both times they admit they feel it sticking but says they don't have an answer. Looking this up, it sounds like there are several other HR-V owners with the same problem. Driving on a highway in a windy city, it takes a lot to control the car but makes it way worse when the steering wheel sticks. I feel like this is a major safety issue and Honda won't do anything about it. This happens all the time, not just once. You can feel it while in park or while driving.
Steering is very sticky and feels like pressure builds up while driving. Several times I've been in a situation where I have to jerk the steering wheel because it "locks" up and feels like your trying to pull apart magnets. The Honda dealership says they can't duplicate the issue. American Honda is ridiculous and won't help at all. I'm having a lemon law attorney currently review this issue along with other issues I've had with the HRV. This car is a total disappointment and unsafe in so many ways and Honda knows exactly what's going on they just aren't doing anything about it.
