THIS CAR HAS A DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION. THE FIRST ONE FAILED AT 80K, AND THE NEW REPLACEMENT FROM HONDA FAILED A 119K, ONLY 39K MILES LATER! HONDA REFUSED TO WARRANTY IT OR HELP IN ANY WAY. *TT
- MY HONDA ODYSSEY 2000 GOT THE 1ST TRANSMISSION BREAKDOWN AT 106K MILES IN 7/2009. HONDA AGREED TO PAY HALF OF THE REPAIR COST AND I PAID HALF (~$2000) TO REPLACE A NEW REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION FR HONDA. - THE 2ND TRANSMISSION LAST ME ANOTHER 34K MILES (4 YEARS) AND IT SUDDENLY BROKE DOWN YESTERDAY. - I LOSE TRUST IN HONDA. NOT SURE IF HONDA STILL CONTINUE HONOR THEIR WARRANTY ON THE TRANSMISSION WITH THEY CLAIMED THEY HAVE FIX THE ISSUE ON THE REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION. *TR
DRIVING SOUTH ON RT84, JUST ENTERING CT, THE ENGINE BEGINS TO OVER-REV TO 8000RPMS. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ON, AND THE CAR WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 65MPH. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED, DISENGAGING OUT OF DRIVE. COASTING, THE ENGINE WAS OPERATING, NORMAL RPMS FOR IDLE SPEED. TRYING TO REENGAGE THE TRANSMISSION AT A LOWER GEAR, FAILED. PULLED OFF RT84 IN VERNON ROCKVILLE, CT, AND MADE IT TO A PARKING LOT. ENGINE OVER-REVVING TO GET TRANSMISSION TO ENGAGE. PARKED, THE CAR WAS ALLOWED TO SIT, SHUT OFF FOR 45 MINUTES. RESTARTED CAR, ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE, AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TO ENGAGE IN ANY FORWARD GEAR. WAS ABLE TO ENGAGE THE TRANSMISSION IN REVERSE, BUT NOT IN A FORWARD GEAR. HAD CAR TOWED TO HONDA DEALER IN MANCHESTER, CT. DEALER SUBSEQUENTLY CONFIRMED THE VEHICLE REQUIRED A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. UP TO THIS POINT, NO SIGN OF TRANSMISSION TROUBLE; NO SLIPPAGE, NO HESITATION. TRANSMISSION WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000 MILES OLD, HAVING BEEN REPLACED AT HONDA DEALER UNDER RECALL BACK IN 2004, AT APPROXIMATELY 32,000 MILES. *TR
WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND NOTICED A SMALL WISP OF SMOKE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. WE EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND TOOK THE PLASTIC COVER OFF THE STEERING COLUMN AND INVESTIGATED. SEEING NO MORE SMOKE WE FIGURED A FUSE HAD BLOWN OR SOME SUCH AND TOOK A SHORT BREAK FROM DRIVING. WE GOT BACK IN THE VAN AND STARTED OFF DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND FOR 30 MILES OR SO NO PROBLEMS. SUDDENLY WE NOTICED THE SMOKE AGAIN BUT THIS TIME THERE WAS A SMALL CIGARETTE LIGHTER TYPE FLAME COMING FROM THE TURN SIGNAL BOX ON THE COLUMN. WE IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE NEXT EXIT AND PARKED ON THE EXIT RAMP. WE TRIED MANGO JUICE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE WHICH WORKED FOR A SHORT TIME BUT THEN THE FIRE WAS BACK. WE CALLED 911 AND BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT COULD GET THERE (APPROX. 2-3 MINUTES) THE SMALL LITTLE FLAME HAD GROWN TO CONSUME THE ENTIRE CAR IN FLAMES. THE CAR WAS TOTALLY DEMOLISHED BY THE FIRE. *TR
MINIVAN STARTED JERKY AND LOST POWER CLIMBING GENTLE SLOPE ON GEARY BLVD IN SAN FRANCISCO. AFTER I FRANTICALLY MOVED TO THE SIDE TO PREVENT BEING HIT BY A TRUCK, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK THE VEHICLE, I WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. *TR
WE ARE TRYING TO RESOLVE WHAT WE BELIEVE TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE WITH AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR COMPANY REGARDING THE FUNCTION OF OUR SEAT BELT SYSTEM. OUR SEAT BELT IS COVERED BY A LIFETIME WARRANTY BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE BELT MATERIAL HAS DEGRADED AND FRAYED CREATING LONG STRANDS OF FIBER THAT RESTRICT IT SLIDING THROUGH THE LATCH MECHANISM. IN ADDITION, THE WIDTH OF THE BELT HAS BEEN REDUCED BY OVER 10% DUE TO THE MATERIAL FRAYING AND UNRAVELING. HONDA HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AN ISSUE - CHOOSING TO SOLELY FOCUS ON WHETHER OR NOT THE SEAT BELT WILL RETRACT AND "LATCH" --- IGNORING THAT THE BELT ITSELF HAS BEEN SEVERELY DEGRADED. CLEARLY THE MATERIAL CHOSEN BY HONDA IS DEFECTIVE AND HAS NOT PROVIDED THE LIFETIME BENEFITS OFFERED IN OUR WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. THE SEAT BELT HAS NEVER BEEN ALTERED OR MODIFIED. WE ARE NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THE COSMETIC APPEARANCE OF THE BELT. HONDA CLAIMS THE SYSTEM IS STILL FULL FUNCTIONAL AND THIS WILL NOT ADDRESS IT UNDER WARRANTY - WHICH CONTRADICTS THEIR OWNER'S MANUAL WHICH STATES THAT THE BELT SHOULD BE REPLACED. IT SIMPLY WAS NOT ENGINEERED TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY PROTECTION FOR THE LIFETIME OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
2000 HONDA ODYSSEY. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO WORN SEAT BELT STRAPS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE SEAT BELT WAS WORN TO THE POINT WHERE THE WIDTH WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED AND CONTINUED TO GET MORE NARROW AS THE BELT WAS USED. THE ACTUAL BELT MATERIAL WAS UNRAVELING AND COMPROMISING THE STRENGTH OF THE BELT. IN ADDITION, THE WORN AND FRAYED AREAS WERE RESTRICTING THE ABILITY OF THE LATCH TO SLIDE ALONG THE BELT AND AT TIMES LEAVE GAPS BETWEEN THE BELT AND THE USER. *JB
ALL THE MOTOR MOUNTS AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS NEED TO BE REPLACED. I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEING AN ISSUE IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE, BUT AFTER DOING A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH I DISCOVERED IT IS COMMON IN ODYSSEYS. WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE OUR VEHICLES WITHOUT BEING CONCERNED FOR THE STABILITY OF OUR ENGINE AND TRANNY. THIS JUST SHOULDN'T HAPPEN. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT 60 MILES PER HOUR ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THE TRANSMISSION SPONTANEOUSLY FAILED. I WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE AFTER THAT POINT, BUT WAS FORTUNATELY ABLE TO COAST OFF THE FREEWAY. HAD THIS HAPPENED 2 MINUTES EARLIER, I WOULD HAVE BEEN STUCK IN A ACUTE TURN IN THE FREEWAY WITHOUT A GOOD SHOULDER TO PULL OF ON, LEAVING ME STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. *TR
WHEN WE (FAMILY OF 4) WERE BACKING OUT OF OUR DRIVE WAY, AT/ABOUT 5MPH, A LOUD METALLIC NOISE WAS HEARD. IT APPEARED TO COME FROM UNDER THE VAN, FRONT/LEFT SIDE. WE PARKED THE VAN AND LOOKED UNDER THE VAN, EVERYTHING LOOKED NORMAL. BUT THE NOISE WAS QUITE LOUD AND WE KNEW SOMETHING WAS NOT CORRECT. WE DROVE THE VAN ABOUT 50 FEET IN OUR CUL-DE-SAC AND HEARD ANOTHER METALLIC NOISE AND SOMETHING FELL UNDER THE VAN. WHEN WE LOOKED UNDER THE VAN, WE FOUND A PIECE OF SUSPENSION SPRING, ABOUT 9 INCHES LONG. THE PIECE WAS NOT RUSTED OR BRITTLE, IT LOOKED PRETTY STONG, BUT APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN SUDDENLY BROKEN/SNAPPED. LUCKY THAT IT DID NOT HAPPEN WHEN WE WERE ARE ON ANY HIGHWAY OR AT A HIGHER SPEED. LATER WE TOOK VAN TO GET, THE SPRINGS/STRUTS REPLACED. A GOOGLE SEARCH FOUND OUT THAT WE WERE NOT ALONE, THIS SEEM TO HAVE HAPPENED LOTS OF OTHER FAMILIES. A TYPICAL WEBSITE EXAMPLE IS BELOW. I COULD FIND MANY MORE. THIS LOOKS LIKE A SYSTEMIC OR MATERIAL PROBLEM WITH THESE SPRINGS AND HONDA MUST DO SOMETHING SO THAT NONE WOULD GET INJURED OR HURT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS AND USUALLY ON COLD STARTS. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE PRESSURE SWITCH FOR THE GEARS FAILED. THE DEALER FIRST ATTEMPTED TO CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION, BUT THAT DID NOT WORK. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 114,000. UPDATED 8/26/13 *CN
I PURCHASED BRAND NEW MICHELIN DEFENDER TIRES THREE WEEKS AGO FROM A MICHELIN CERTIFIED AUTO REPAIR SHOP. TODAY WE HAD A CATASTROPHIC BLOW OUT...CONSISTENT WITH A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. WE WERE DRIVING LESS THAN ONE MILE FROM OUR HOME, ON A CLEAR DAY, WITH NO POT HOLES, OR OBSTACLES IN THE ROAD. WE DID NOT HIT OR RUN OVER ANYTHING. WE WERE DRIVING LESS THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR...ON A CLEAR CITY STREET IN VIRGINIA. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE....IT WAS OBVIOUS THE TIRE HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. WE WENT ACROSS THE STREET TO MERCHANTS TIRE AND AUTO. THE TIRE HAD FOUR BLOW OUT HOLES ON EVERY SINGLE SIDE OF THIS TIRE. THIS TIRE IS ONLY 3 WEEKS OLD. IT HAS LESS THAN 200 MILES ON IT. MICHELIN REFUSED TO WARRANTY THIS TIRE. THEY COVERED ONLY 50 % OF THE TIRE. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING WITH MY 4 CHILDREN IN THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY...WE WOULD HAVE BEEN INJURED. THE TIRE WAS CONFISCATED (PER MICHELIN) BY MERCHANTS TIRE AND AUTO. *TR
ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. HONDA RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND SAID TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $6,400. WE DID SOME WEB RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THE TRANSMISSIONS IN 2000 ODYSSEYS HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF EARLY MALFUNCTION. THE TECHNICIAN AT THE DEALER ALSO ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THESE TRANSMISSIONS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM AND SUGGESTED WE CONTACT AMERICAN HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. WE CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA, BUT THEY SAID IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM SINCE THE VEHICLE IS OUTSIDE THE AGE PORTION OF THE WARRANTY FOR THIS PROBLEM (8 YEARS) DESPITE BEING WELL INSIDE THE MILEAGE PORTION OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 229,000.
MY HONDA ODYSSEY (YEAR 2000) STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THEN WHEN GREEN LIGHT WAS ON, IT ROARED BIG TIME AT VERY HIGH RPM, AND MOVED VERY LITTLE. LOTS OF CARS BEHIND ME. AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE, MY CAR SUDDENLY MOVED, AND MOVED AS NORMAL AS USUAL. SINCE THEN, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS COLD, MY CARS MOVES VERY TEENY-TINY BIT AFTER A STOP, AND THEN SUDDENLY PULL FORWARD. THE SITUATION IS EVEN WORSE IF MY CAR STOPS AT BOTTOM OF A HILL, THEN CLIMBING UP THE HILL AFTER THAT IS A BIG CHALLENGE. I WAS TOLD IT IS PROBABLY TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, THERE WAS A RECALL. BUT HONDA DEALERS SAID HONDA DOES NOT SHARE ANY COST IF I REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM (ABOUT $4000) WHICH IS RECOMMENDED BY THE DEALER, BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY PERIOD, EVEN THOUGH THE MILEAGE IS NOW JUST A BIT MORE THAN 70K. *TR
MOVING FROM STOP AT LOW SPEED THE TRANSMISSION FREQUENTLY HESITATES BEFORE SHIFTING, FOLLOWED BY A LOUD THUMP WHEN IT DOES SHIFT. AT HIGHER SPEEDS, ONCE IN MOTION, THERE IS ROUGH SHIFTING FROM 3RD TO 4TH GEAR ALSO. JUDGED BY ME TO BE UNSAFE IF DRIVEN BY OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS, BUT OK WITH CAUTION IF DRIVEN CAREFULLY BY ME SINCE I HAVE BEEN PRINCIPAL DRIVER FOR 13 YEARS. VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED 11/13/12 BY HONDA DEALERSHIP WHERE IT HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY SINCE NEW (IT IS A ONE-OWNER VEHICLE) CONFIRMING INTERNAL SLIPPAGE OF THE TRANSMISSION WITH REPLACEMENT RECOMMENDED. DEALERSHIP VOLUNTARILY CONTACTED HONDA DISTRICT MANAGER IN CALIFORNIA FOR A DECISION ON WHETHER HONDA WOULD PARTICIPATE IN REPLACEMENT COST. REQUEST DENIED. *TR
LEFT SLIDING DOOR LATCH DOES NOT WORK, TRANSMISSION DOESN'T WORK AFTER 61 MILES OF PURCHASE ! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TRAVELING 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME WHERE A PRIVATE MECHANIC INSPECTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 137,324.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR LATCH FAILED WHICH PREVENT IT FROM CLOSING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSE THAT THE LATCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000.....UPDATED 10/11/12 *BF UPDATED 10/15/2012 *JS THE CONSUMER STATED THE DOOR LATCH WAS REPAIRED (ON 09/03/2012) WITH NO ASSISTANCE FROM THE MANUFACTURER NOR DEALER. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED FOR THE THIRD TIME IN 117,000 MILES. UPDATED 10/16/2012 *JS.
I HAVE BOUGHT MY USED ODYSSEY IN JANUARY 2012 FROM A DEALER AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AT 107,000 MILES. I KNOW THERE WAS A RECALL IN 2004 THAT HAD THE WARRANTY UP TO 100,000 MILES AND AN APPROVED CLASS LAWSUIT IN 2006 THAT EXTENDED THE WARRANTY UP TO 109,000 MILES. THEREFORE, MY VAN IS STILL UNDER THE WARRANTY SINCE ITS AT 107,000. I STRONGLY REQUEST THAT THIS ISSUE IS RESOLVED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND THAT HONDA FIXES AND PAYS FOR THE REPAIR; OR AT LEAST GIVE ME A CALL AND DISCUSS THE MATTER. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO PAY FOR THE TRANSMISSION ENTIRELY BECAUSE I AM A STUDENT AND I SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD IT. THANK YOU. *TR
CAR BEGAN TO RUMBLE AND VIBRATE WHEN I PULLED INTO MY GARAGE. THERE WAS A LOUD POP NOISE WHEN ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF AND AGAIN WHEN I STARTED IT THE NEXT MORNING. THOUGHT IT WAS AN EXHAUST PROBLEM BUT MY RIGHT FRONT ENGINE MOUNT WAS BROKEN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT ENGINE MOUNTS I FOUND THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THE HONDA ODYSSEY. MORE THAN LIKELY, I WILL BE NEEDING THE OTHER MOUNTS REPLACED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IF SOMEONE THINKS IT IS AN EXHAUST ISSUE, THEY MAY PUT OFF HAVING IT CHECKED WHICH CAN PUT STRESS ON THE OTHER MOUNTS. SEEMS TO ME WITH THE FREQUENCY OF THIS HAPPENING TO THIS MODEL CAR, IT SHOULD BECOME A RECALL ISSUE. CAN BE A DEFINITE SAFETY HAZARD IF SEVERAL OF THE MOUNTS BREAK AT THE SAME TIME. *TR
FRONT MOTOR MOUNT BROKEN AND SIDE MOUNT WORN. BOTH NEED REPLACING. READING BLOGS AND FINDING THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON HONDAS, WHICH HONDA REFUSES TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THE KEY COULD ERRONEOUSLY BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION WITHOUT THE GEAR BEING SECURED IN PARK. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE VEHICLE ROLLING AWAY AS HE REALIZED THAT THE ALTHOUGH THE KEY WAS REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION, HE FAILED TO ENGAGE THE VEHICLE IN PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 149,000.
I AM HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, WHEN SHIFTING FROM 1ST GEAR TO SECOND IT SLIPS AND SUDDENLY GOES INTO GEAR, ALSO WHEN IN 4TH GEAR IT TENDS TO SLIP, REV UP THEN JUMPS BACK INTO GEAR. I THINK ITS VERY DANGEROUS AND MAY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I READ THE FOURMS ON PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANS ON THE ODYSSEY AND NOTICED THERE IS TOO MANY COMPLANTS ON THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND THERE WERE NO PREVIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. THE CONDITION PERSISTED FOR TWO DAYS AND REQUIRED A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL WITH A NEW TORQUE CONVERTER. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT TRANSMISSION FAILURE IS ALL TOO COMMON IN HONDA ODYSSEY VANS. *JS
2000 HONDA ODYSSEY - HAD TRANS. REPLACED IN 2005 WITH 98,000 MILES ON CAR. NOW NEED TO HAVE TRANSMISSION REPLACED (7 YEARS LATER, 98,000 MILES AGAIN). I AM FRUSTRATED THAT I NEED TO REPLACE A 7 YEAR OLD TRANSMISSION. I HAVE BEEN METICULOUS ABOUT MAINTENANCE ON THIS CAR. ALL SERVICE BY HONDA DEALER. I HAVE OWNED OTHER BRANDS OF CARS AND NEVER HAD TO REPLACE A TRANSMISSION. SPOKE TO HONDA AMERICA REP AND MY CAR REPAIRMAN. NEITHER WERE ABLE TO HELP ME TO GET ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE COST OF REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. HOW DISAPPOINTING. I KNOW IT IS BEYOND THE WARRANTY FROM THE PURCHASE OF THE CAR. HOWEVER, THE 7 YEAR REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION THAT WAS DONE IN 2005 MAY BE DEFECTIVE AS RECOGNIZED IN THE 2006 CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAIN HONDA. HOWEVER, THAT DOESN'T MATTER ACCORDING TO HONDA AMERICA. I AM BEING FACED WITH A $4000 REPAIR OR PURCHASING A NEW CAR (WAS NOT PLANNED FOR ANOTHER YEAR OR TWO). THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED SECOND HAND IN 2012 AND IMMEDIATELY NEEDED TO HAVE ITS AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT A COST OF $3,000. EVEN NOW THERE IS OCCASIONAL SLIPAGE OF THE NEW TRANSMISSION, WHICH INDICATES TO ME IT MAY NOT BE LONG FOR THIS WORLD. IT'S PAINFULLY OBVIOUS HONDA BUILT AND INSTALLED SUP PAR TRANSMISSIONS FOR MANY YEARS, DESPITE MOUNTAINS OF COMPLAINTS FROM CONSUMERS. THEY SHOULD BE TAKEN TO TASK FOR POOR DESIGN, ENGINEERING AND CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE TRANSMISSION STALLED WHEN TRYING TO SHIFT UP FROM FIRST GEAR, THEN LURCHED FORWARD VIOLENTLY. ON DOING SOME ONLINE RESEARCH IT APPEARS THAT HONDA EQUIPPED THE ODYSSEY WITH SUBSTANDARD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, WITH A VERY HIGH RATE OF FAILURE. IT'S A SAFETY PROBLEM AS THERE'S EITHER NOT ENOUGH ACCELERATION POWER WHEN NEEDED...OR TOO MUCH WHEN IT DOES FINALLY ENGAGE. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN HONDA, AS THEIR REPUTATION OVER THE YEARS HAS BEEN GOOD FOR OTHER MODELS, BUT THE ODYSSEY HAS BEEN SADDLED WITH A VERY POORLY MANUFACTURED, WEAK AND PRONE TO EARLY FAILURE, TRANSMISSION. I AM A LICENSED USED VEHICLE SALESPERSON. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE AT A DEALER AUCTION FEB. 2012. UPON PURCHASE THAT DAY, THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT FAIL WITH ITS 11 MPH SHIFT UNTIL IT GOT WARM. WE THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY A FILTER AS OTHER VEHICLES HAVE HAD. WHEN WE GOT IT HOME, WE CALLED HONDA AND THEY SAID THIS PARTICULAR TRANSMISSION HAS NO WAY TO CHANGE FLUID OR FILTER. I CALLED HONDA ABOUT A RECALL, THEY SAID NO RECALLS. IT WOULD ONLY COST ME $3797 DEALER COST TO REPLACE IT. SINCE THEN I HAVE FOUND THAT HONDA STILL HAS THIS PROBLEM EVERY VEHICLE YEAR UP TO 2012. I THINK IF THEY CAN PRODUCE AND USE SUCH A TRANSMISSION, THEY SHOULD BE FORCED TO RECALL THEM ALL. TOYOTA RECALLED ALL THEIR ENGINES 2 YEARS AGO, REGARDLESS OF YEAR OR MILEAGE AND THEY SURVIVED THE RECALL. I AM STILL DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT. I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE. WHEN I NEGOTIATED A TURN INTO MY TURNAROUND, I HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT TIRE AREA. I STOPPED AND LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE, SAW NO VISIBLE DAMAGE, THEN DROVE IMMEDIATELY TO MY MECHANIC'S GARAGE. UPON INSPECTION, I WAS TOLD THAT BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS WERE BROKEN.

WHEN THE TRANSMISSION GAVE OUT. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, BUT LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO MOVE INTO THE SLOW LANE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS A HISTORY OF TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AS EVIDENT BY READING REVIEWS ON THE CAR. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS AGAINST HONDA THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF I CAN JOIN IN. HONDA KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM VERY EARLY ON BECAUSE I STILL HAVE THE LETTER THAT THEY SENT TO ME IN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP OFFERING AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO EVERY ODYSSEY OWNER REGARDING TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE TECHNICIANS ADVISED TO THE CONTACT THAT REPAIRS WOULD HAVE TO BE PERFORMED TO THE IGNITION. THE CONTACT WAS UNAWARE OF THE EXACT REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 156,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

TOOK TO DEALER IMMEDIATELY AFTER GETTING HOME BUT WAS TOLD IT WAS OVER MILEAGE FOR RECALL. SINCE I HAD TO PAY FULL PRICE TOOK IT TOO LOCAL REPAIR SHOP FOR REPAIRS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AFTER @ 5000 MILES DEALERSHIP BLAMED OUTSIDE MECHANIC WHO SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH CONVERTER. THE TRANSMISSION WAS LEAKING THE WHOLE TIME BUT THE DEALERSHIP NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT A RECALL. NOW IT IS OVER 140000 THE TRANSMISSION IS TOTALLY SHOT EVEN AFTER I HAVE KEPT REFILLING IT TO MAKE SURE THE FLUID STAYED AT PROPER LEVELS AND I HAVE TO EITHER HAVE TO REPAIR IT MYSELF OR TRADE IT IN. IN MAY 2005 THE TRANSMISSION ON THIS 2000 ODYSSEY FAILED AND WAS REPLACED BY OUR LOCAL DEALER AT NO CHARGE UNDER THE DIRECTIONS OF SERVICE BULLETIN 02-062. THE MILEAGE AT THE TIME WAS ALMOST 72,000 MILES. WE HAD HEARD THAT THERE HAD BEEN TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AND WE THOUGHT THAT THE 2005 REPLACEMENT WOULD HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM. NOW, AFTER ANOTHER 68,000 MILES, THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. THIS REPLACEMENT ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION FAILED AFTER SUNSET AT ABOUT 7:00 PM ON AN UNLIT TWO LANE COUNTRY ROAD WITH LITTLE ROOM OR OPPORTUNITY TO PARK SAFELY. MY HUSBAND, WHO IS ALMOST 70 YEARS OLD WAS DRIVING AND WITH NO GEARS BARELY MANAGED TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT WAS STILL DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO THE ROAD, BUT FORTUNATELY ANOTHER DRIVER STOPPED AND HELPED MY HUSBAND PUSH THE ODYSSEY A FEW EXTRA FEET TO A SLIGHTLY SAFER AREA. WE WERE ABOUT 100 YARDS FROM A CURVE WHERE APPROACHING CARS COULD NOT SEE US UNTIL THEY WERE ALMOST UPON US. THE ONLY PROTECTION WE HAD WAS OUR EMERGENCY FLASHERS. WE WERE APPROXIMATELY FIVE MILES FROM OUR HOME IN A VERY RURAL AREA WITH NO CLOSE SERVICES. WE HAD TO WAIT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR ALMOST TWO HOURS FOR A TOW TRUCK TO ARRIVE. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS AND FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. SINCE WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN METICULOUS IN DEALER RECOMMENDED AND PROVIDED MAINTENANCE, I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT INADEQUATE AND/OR SHODDY HONDA REPLACEMENTS PARTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS FAILURE. CHECKED THE HONDA OWNER LINK AND FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL ON HONDA'S TRANSMISSION. IT EXTENDED ITS WARRANTY ON IT TO 100000 MILES/7 YEARS. MY CAR IS ALMOST 13 YEARS. I ALWAYS TOOK MY CAR TO HONDA DEALER TO SERVICE. I WAS NEVER BEEN TOLD IT HAD A RECALL. READ ON INTERNET ABOUT HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION, THERE WERE SO MANY MANY ODYSSEY OWNERS EXPERIENCED THE ISSUE I HAVE NOW. IT WAS HONDA'S DESIGN FAULT. CALLED HONDA OF AMERICA AND FILED COMPLAIN. IT WAS RUDE AND COLD.IT IS TRUE MY CAR WAS ALMOST 13 YEARS. TOLD TO SOME MECHANICS ON THIS ISSUE, THEY ALL TOLD ME ABOUT THIS ISSUE COMMON AMONG HONDA CARS.
