I WAS DRIVING MY HONDA '04 ODYSSEY MINI-VAN ON THE TACONIC PARKWAY, NY WITH MY 3 YOUNG CHILDREN WHEN THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO BUCK, THEN RACE THEN SHUT DOWN. I SLOWLY HIT BRAKES TO A STOP, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF THEN LET THE CAR REST WITH HAZARDS ON FOR ABOUT 5 MINS. I THEN RESTARTED THE CAR, IT RAN WELL FOR A FEW MILES TILL A HILL. THEN IT BUCKED, RACED AGAIN AND I PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY. I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS NEAR HOME AND WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY GET IT TO A HONDA DEALER SHOP. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THAT THIS HAS EVER HAPPENED TO THE CAR. THEY LOOKED IT OVER THE NEXT DAY AND I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION WHICH WOULD COST ABOUT $4,000.00. I HAVE HAD MY CAR SERVICED RELIGIOUSLY ACCORDING TO HONDA GUIDE LINES AND RECOMMENDATIONS BY ONLY HONDA DEALERS, FIRST WHERE I BOUGHT IT IN TARRY TOWN, THEN BREWSTER, THEN FINALLY IN YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, NY. THE CAR HAS 82,000 MILES ON IT. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY IS FOR 75K MILES AND 7 YEARS. I AM OVER BY 7K MILES. I JUST HAD THE MOUNTS REPLACED, NEW SERPENTINE BELT, TIRES AND BREAKS. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL AND YEAR AND FELT I SHOULD REPORT IT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE YET THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND AS SHE ACCELERATED TO 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE DIRECTLY TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WITHOUT ACCELERATING PAST 25 MPH. THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC AND ADVISED HER THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000.
DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY FLORIDA TO ILLINOIS AT APX 65-70MPH,WITHOUT WARNING VEHICLE LOOSES POWER, ALMOST TO A CRAWL, SMOKE BELLOWING OUT BEHIND THE CAR. DIAGNOSED AS TRANSMISSION FAILURE. HONDA DEALERSHIP STATES VEHICLE IS NOT COVER BY WARRANTY OR RECALL. DEALERSHIP COULD REPLACE TRANNY AT A COST OVER $5K. OPTED TO INSTALL ANOTHER ODYSSEY TRANS INDEPENDENTLY. THIS FAILED IN LESS THAN 1K MILES. OPTED TO THEN HAVE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION INDEPENDENTLY REBUILT WITH GENUINE HONDA'S OEM PARTS AND SPECIFICATION WITH HONDA DEALERSHIP CONSULT. WORKED FINE FOR APPX 26K MILES THEN TORQUE CONVERTER BURNED OUT AGAIN. REPLACED AND REPAIRED TORQUE EVEN SOLENOID BUT LESS THAN 8K MI TRANNY FAILED AGAIN. ALL THESE HAPPENED IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR AND 30K MILES. BILL KAY HONDA DEALERSHIP STILL SAYING CAR IS NOT INVOLVE IN RECALL/SUIT AND OUT OF WARRANTY. PREVIOUSLY I COMPLAINED AT PLANET HONDA ABOUT A JERK/THUMP WHEN INCREASING SPEED BETWEEN 10-40 AND DEALERSHIP STATES THEY 'COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM'. VEHICLE IS STILL DOWN AND HONDA AND THEIR DEALERSHIPS ARE STILL SCREWING IT'S CUSTOMERS. PS: HAD 2002 ODYSSEY THAT WAS ON ITS WAY OUT WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS BUT IT CRASHED. ALSO, HAVE A 2001 CIVIC WITH SAME TRANSMISSION FAILURE SITTING FOR THE LEAST 3 YEARS WITH ONLY ABOUT 100K ON IT! SHAME ON YOU HONDA!!! *TR
MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY KEYS HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO OPEN MY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR FOR ALMOST A YEAR. A FEW WEEKS AGO I STARTED HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH MY IGNITION. IT'S GETTING HARDER EVERY DAY AND TAKING MORE TIME TO TRICK MY KEY INTO THE IGNITION LOCK. IF I DON'T WIGGLE IT IN PERFECTLY IT WILL GET STUCK HALF WAY IN AND I HAVE TO TRICK IT BACK OUT OF THE LOCK. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP TOMORROW TO FIX WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IS BUT HE SAID TO PLAN ON AT LEAST $500 FOR NEW CYLINDERS AND/OR IGNITION, PLUS POSSIBLY NEW KEYS. I'M REALLY FRUSTRATED WITH THIS BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM SO IT MUST BE A DEFECT. *TR
THERE WERE NO EVENTS OR ISSUES LEADING UP TO THE EVENT. WHILE TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF APPROX 35 MPH THE LATCH ON THE SLIDER DOOR (DRIVER'S SIDE) BECAME DISENGAGED AND THE SLIDER DOOR OPENED. THE DOOR WAS PROPERLY CLOSED AND AND LOCKED. THE SLIDER FAILED TO CLOSE AFTER THAT. PUT THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPLACEMENT OF LATCH. *TR
I STARTED LEASING HONDA ODYSSEY 2004 FROM HONDA DEALERSHIP IN APRIL 2004 FOR 3 YEARS, HAS NOT ANY PROBLEM WITH VEHICLE IN THAT PERIOD (WARRANTY PERIOD). I BOUGHT AFTER LEASE AND ALL PROBLEMS STARTED. 1): RADIO STOPPED WORKING, HONDA REPLACED "FREE" BECAUSE I BOUGHT ADDITIONAL 2 YEAR WARRANTY WITH $100 DEDUCTIBLE, 2): BACK SIDE WINDOW ALSO STOPPED ON OPEN POSITION, HONDA FIXED FOR $100 DEDUCTIBLE, (PAST 4 YEARS BOTH SIDE WINDOWS DOESN'T WORK), 3): (ONE OF MAJOR PROBLEMS FOR BLUE COLOR ODYSSEY'S THIS YEAR), PAINT STARTED PEELING FROM HOOD, ROOF, UNDER GLASS OF BOTH SIDE SLIDING DOORS, AROUND BACK BOTH SIDE WINDOWS AND WHOLE PAINT ON TAILGATE, HONDA COVERED ONLY HOOD, ROOF AND AROUND BACK BOTH SIDE WINDOWS, WHEN ASKED TO PAINT REST OF PLACES THEY SAID DON'T HAVE INSTRUCTION ABOUT OTHER SPOTS FROM HONDA (ITS WAS VERY FUNNY, LIKE: "DOCTOR KNOW BETTER, ARE YOU DEAD OR ALIVE"), NOW HONDA OFFERS ME FOR PAINT IT WITH DISCOUNTED PRICE. 4) TRANSMISSION FAILS, COULDN'T GET ANY GEAR UNTIL RESETTING FROM HOLE TOP OF STEERING WILL,CHANGING TRANS OIL DIDN'T RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM (THIS WHAT MECHANIC TOLD ME) IN HONDA DEALERSHIP 5) IN 2011 ON SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE MECHANIC TOLD ME TO CHANGE ALL ENGINE MOUNTS AND FRONT SHOCKS FOR $2500, HYDRAULIC ENGINE MOUNT GOT LEAK AND BROKE OTHER MOUNTS, I BOUGHT ALL ENGINE MOUNTS AND FRONT SHOCKS FOR $700 AND CHANGED MY SELF....NOW SRS ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT....I GUESS ITS TOO MANY DEFECTS AND PROBLEMS FOR THIS CAR....BTW I'M A FIRST AND ONLY OWNER OF THIS ODYSSEY AND GOT ONLY 96K MILES ON IT.... *TR
THE TRANSMISSION WAS RUNNING WELL WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT BLEW ITS TOP ON I-90 WEST WHILE TRAVELING THROUGH NEW YORK. THE 2ND GEAR BEGAN TO SHUTTER 3 WEEKS BEFORE BUT IT WAS NOT CONSISTENT AND OTHER THAN THAT THE CAR RAN WELL. *TR
OUR 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY IS HAVING TRANSMISSION TROUBLE. IT BEGAN WITH SOME SHAKING AND SHUDDERING AT 1500 RPMS, BETWEEN 25 - 35 MPH. WE TOOK INTO A LOCAL GARAGE AND THE MECHANIC TOLD US THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY HONDA ODYSSEY EX 2004 IN THE LEFT MOST LANE WITH MY WIFE AND 3 KIDS (AGES 7, 10, 12) ON A HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH. SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE TOOK A JERK (LIKE A HICCUP) AND ALL THE SYSTEMS SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATELY. EVEN THE STEERING WAS COMPLETELY FROZEN SINCE THERE WAS NO POWER. I HARDLY MANAGED TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER WHILE HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC WAS PASSING. IT WAS A HORRIBLE FEELING. MY FAMILY WAS COMPLETELY TERRIFIED. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. THEY FOUND A "SHORT CIRCUIT" IN THE IGNITION WIRING. ALSO, MY "TRANSMISSION" WAS NOT WORKING. SHORT CIRCUIT WAS REPAIRED ($250) BUT TRANSMISSION QUOTE IS OVER $4000 WHICH I CANNOT AFFORD. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING 70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE IGNITION WIRING WAS REPLACED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY BEGAN TO DECELERATE AND BECAME HESITANT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED IN REGARDS TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V176000 (POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION). THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT THE CONTACT'S VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 137,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILED; HOWEVER, HE WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY WITHOUT SHIFTING INTO PARK. THE CONTACT CALLED THE LOCAL DEALER WHO STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO REFERRED HIM TO NHTSA. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 84,000.
I WAS DRIVING AND MY VAN STARTED KIND OF JERKING AND THEN IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. MY TCS (TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM) LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS MERGING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY IN PEAK RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND MY VAN STOPPED ON A CURVE. MY CHILD AND I WERE ALMOST KILLED BY A SEMI THAT JUST ABOUT REAR-ENDED US BUT INSTEAD DROVE INTO ANOTHER LANE, ABOUT HITTING ANOTHER CAR. THE VAN WAS RUNNING, BUT WOULD NOT DRIVE OR GO IN REVERSE. THE DEALER TOLD ME IT IS THE TRANSMISSION AND IT WOULD BE $4,000 TO REPAIR. I SAW ON-LINE THAT MANY, MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH THE HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION. I AM CURRENTLY GETTING A SECOND OPINION. BOTH THE DEALER AND AMERICAN HONDA TOLD ME THAT THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSIONS IN THE YEAR MY VAN WAS MADE, WHICH I DO NOT BELIEVE IS TRUE. BOTH REFUSED TO HELP ME AND DID NOT TELL ME THAT THERE HAD BEEN RECALLS REGARDING HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSIONS AND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MANY PROBLEMS JUST LIKE MINE. *TR

OUR 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY A/T(TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON). WE HAD THE A/T CHECKED AT THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THE FLUID WAS FINE. THE TRANSMISSION IS OVERHEATING DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE HAS A RECALL 04V176000 AFFECTING SOME 1,099,796 UNITS. OUR UNIT HAS A VIN JUST OUTSIDE OF THE RECALLED VIN NUMBERS. I BELIEVE THIS NEEDS TO BE UPDATED TO INCLUDE OTHER 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY VANS. THE TRANSMISSION IS GOING TO NEED TO BE REPLACED ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP. *TR

OWN 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY, ORIGINAL OWNER, PURCHASED NEW, 130,000 MILES. CHECK ENGINE AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS LIGHTS ILLUMINATED LAST WEDNESDAY. I BELIEVE I AM ONE OF MANY ODYSSEY OWNERS WITH BAD TRANSMISSIONS. APPROXIMATELY $3500 TO FIX IT. *TR
MY 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY HAS A REPEATED PROBLEM WITH ITS "BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH". THIS TERM CAN BE MISLEADING - IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BRAKES. WHAT HAPPENS IS ONCE THE CAR IS TURNED ON, OR SOMETIMES ALREADY ON, AND YOU ARE ABOUT TO SWITCH GEARS, THE CAR IS IN NO GEAR AT ALL. EVEN THE OWNER'S MANUAL HAS A "FIX" FOR THIS UNDER "SHIFT LOCK RELEASE". THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AND OFF IN MY CAR FOR OVER 2 YEARS. I HAVE A HONDA DEALERSHIP CORRECT THIS TO ONLY HAVE IT HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN. THE PROBLEM WITH THE "SHIFT LOCKING" IS IT MAY HAPPEN 3 TIMES IN ONE DAY AND THEN NOT HAPPEN FOR 5 DAYS. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THEY CANNOT REPLICATE THE ITEM SO THEY CANNOT FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY FROM THE PREVIOUS TIME. *TR
DRIVING WITH FAMILY ON BUSY HIGHWAY ON MOTHER'S DAY 2010. COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON OUR 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY MINIVAN. HONDA REFUSES TO ADMIT A PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THEY ISSUED A RECALL FOR ONE PARTICULAR YEAR IN THE EARLY 2000'S. LUCKILY WE WERE NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND WERE ABLE TO GUIDE THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. TOTAL REPAIRS WERE WELL OVER $3,000. HONDA STARTED USING A DIFFERENT TRANSMISSION RECENTLY IN THE ODYSSEY MODEL. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FULLY AS THE INTERNET IS LITTERED WITH REPORTS OF SIMILAR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE SHIFTED GEARS WITHOUT THE KEY BEING IN THE IGNITION. THE DEALER ADVISED THE VEHICLES WAS OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY AND THE CONTACT WOULD BE LIABLE FOR ANY REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY VAN. THE IGNITION SWITCH AND TURN SIGNAL SWITCH FAIL TO OPERATE CORRECTLY. THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY HAD TO BE REPLACED BY THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THE RELAY SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD BEGIN TO ACTIVATE WHILE DRIVING PRODUCING AN ELECTRIC ODOR. THE TURN SIGNAL RELAY SWITCH WAS REPLACED AT APPROX 110,000 MILES. THE IGNITION SWITCH IS NOW BEING REPLACED BECAUSE THE IGNITION KEY CANNOT BE INSERTED TO START THE CAR ROUTINELY WITHOUT BEING MANIPULATED. WHEN THIS CAR WAS RELATIVELY NEW AND UNDER WARRANTY THE FAN SWITCH HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR NOW HAS 150,000 MILES. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS IN THE STEERING COLUMN ARE DEFECTIVE AND THAT THE TURN SIGNAL RELAY SWITCH HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BURN; AND THE IGNITION SWITCH COULD FAIL DURING OPERATION OF THE CAR. THE IGNITION SWITCH IS A DEFECTIVE PART, OR THE PART IS FROM AN A PRIOR RECALL OF 1999 TO 2003 IGNITION SWITCH'S RECALLED BY HONDA THAT WERE USED IN LATER YEAR MODELS. POTENTIALLY, THE 2004 MODELS SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS OF THE IGNITION SWITCHES. *TR
INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) MY CAR IS 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY VAN. WHEN SERVICE DEPT. OF HONDA DEALERSHIP AT DUBLIN, CA REPLACED MY TIMING BELT, THEY FOUND OUT THAT TWO FRONT ENGINE MOUNTS HAVE BEEN ALREADY BROKEN. THEY TOLD ME THAT IF I DON'T REPLACE THE BROKEN ENGINE MOUNTS NOW ,THE THIRD ENGINE MOUNT ON THE BACK WILL BE BROKEN SOON AND IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM. THE ESTIMATED COST WAS $700 TO FIX THE TWO ENGINE MOUNTS. I HAD TO REPLACE THE PARTS TO AVOID DANGER AND MORE FIXING COST IN THE FUTURE. MY WIFE AND I HAVE DRIVEN SEVERAL DIFFERENT CARS AND HAD NEVER THAT KIND OF PROBLEM BEFORE - BROKEN ENGINE MOUNTS. WHEN I RESEARCHED INTERNET, I FOUND OUT THAT HONDA ODYSSEY VAN OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT SAME PROBLEM THAT I HAVE NOW AND IT COSTS HONDA ODYSSEY VAN OWNER $650 TO $1,000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. ON 4/16/2010 MY 2004 HONDA ODYSSEY ENDED UP IN SINGLE CAR CRASH INTO HWY CENTER DIVIDER INJURING US AND TOTAL LOSS OF VEHICLE. WE TOOK QUICK TURN FROM ONE LANE TO ANOTHER TO PREVENT ACCIDENT AND THAT MADE THE VEHICLE OUT OF CONTROL. WHAT WAS SCARY IS DESPITE MY REPEATED EFFORTS TO STOP OR BRING IT BACK TO CONTROL, IT ENDED UP CRASHING. I HAVE AN 04 HONDA ODYSSEY WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM AS THIS RECALL. YOU CAN REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY WITHOUT SHIFTING TO PARK. IT HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES AND THE VAN STARTS ROLLING. THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP. IN A MATTER OF A DAY THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AS I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. THE TACHOMETER SPIKED AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO ACCELERATE. IT WAS TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. I HAD TO COAST THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE HIGHWAY. THE VAN HAS 85,000 MILES. WHEN I CALLED AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CORP ABOUT RECALL NHTSA 04V176000 THEY SAID I WAS NOT COVERED. I CALLED MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP HE STATED SINCE WE WERE NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE THAT HONDA MOTOR CORP WOULD NOT HELP. HE ESTIMATED THAT THE COST TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION WOULD BE AT LEAST $3,200. I TOOK THE VAN TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP. IT COST ME $2300 TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT AND AN EXTERNAL COOLER PUT ON. FURTHERMORE THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID THE MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT THAT IS ALLOWING THE TRANSMISSIONS TO OVERHEAT. ONCE THEY OVERHEAT THEY SEND OFF FLAKES THAT GET CAUGHT IN THE FILTER SCREENS IN THE TRANSMISSION THAT CAUSES MORE OVERHEATING AND EVENTUALLY FAILURE OF TRANSMISSION. *TR
