NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2021 Honda Ridgeline. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I CURRENTLY OWN A 2021 HONDA RIDGELINE SPORT AND IT WAS BROUGHT IN TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP THAT HAD DIAGNOSED A STEERING RACK FAILURE. THE QUOTED PRICE OF REPAIR WAS $4,000. AFTER DOING EXTENSIVE READING ON THIS ISSUE I LEARNED THAT SIMILAR ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED IN LATER YEAR MODELS AS WELL AS SIMILAR YEAR MODELS IN THE HONDA FAMILY. THERE WAS A RECALL OF 1.7 MILLION VEHICLES WITH THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE. THE VEHICLE MAKES LOUD AND CRACKING NOISES AND AT TIMES THE STEERING GETS HEAVY AND ALSO LOOSE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH AND LOW SPEEDS. THE DEALER HAD RESPONDED THAT IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE IN THE LATER YEAR RIDGELINE MODELS AND THERE HAD BEEN A SERVICE BULLETIN ON HOW TO RECTIFY THE ISSUE ON THESE MODELS. I DID NOT SEE ANY CURENT RECALLS FROM THIS YEAR, HOWEVER THIS DOESN'T MEAN THAT THIS IS NOT A KNOWN OR GROWING ISSUE FOR THE YEAR HONDA THAT I CURRENTLY OWN. PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU
Forward brake assist, collision mitigation, auto headlight dash lights came on sporadically. As of today the lights are now on constant and unable to clear. Advised that the forward facing camera most likely died and a replacement due to recalibration would be 1500-2000..
Driving home from work on a Friday about 1am and my engine started t knock and sputter and the engine light started flashing. Luckily I made it home. I let it sit for a minute and started it back up and it ran fine. I let it sit over the weekend I made an appointment the the dealership for the following Monday. On Monday it started fine to go to my dealer appointment but half way there every caution light imaginable came on and the info screen was scrolling failure of every system in the truck it seamed. Even the D for drive was flashing. It was knocking, sputtering with loss of power. Like it was in limp mode. Made it to the dealer and they said it was misfiring which caused the engine to come apart inside. 11K for a new engine or 8K for a used one with 46K miles. The truck only had 86,000 miles on it and has been always dealer maintained. We buy Hondas mostly for their reliability. Skeptical about buying another one
Vehicle started making a clunking noise that could be felt at 45,000 miles when steering left and right. An independent auto business found loose subframe bolts and lower control arm as well as checked sway bar links and found loose core support braces. The clunking stopped after the bolts were tightened. I found this very odd and concerning. 2021 Honda Rigdeline RTL. Cost to remedy included two hours of labor.
The check engine light came on Dec 26 which I took to have checked and was told that it should go to the shop. The code was not being stored. I took it to the Honda dealership and they did a complete check and said the engine had gone back. The connecting rods and barrings cause the engine to fail and it needed to be replaced. I contacted Honda Goodwill and they declined to do anything to help repair the engine.
The contact's husband owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that while her husband was driving 55 MPH, the vehicle went into LIMP Mode and made an abnormal knocking sound. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the timing belt, the water pump, and the tensioner pulley were replaced; however, the knocking sound persisted. The dealer determined that the lower bearing had failed, and the dealer recommended replacing the engine with a used engine. Additionally, the contact was advised that the oil pump was leaking and might need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The manufacturer requested the vehicle service records. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.
The Multipurpose Camera had an Internal Electronic Failure. Indications we all of the warning lights were illuminated on my dash. Initially it began when I had about 43, 400 miles on my truck. The warning lights would all remail lighted on starting the vehicle. I could restart the vehicle and eventually get the lights to go off. Then the slowly began to stay on permanently. I eventually made an appointment and took my truck into a Honda dealership and it was diagnosed a the failure of the Multipurpose Camera at 44,000 miles. The Honda Service Tech told me that none of my safety features were working at this time which really scared me. The Honda Dealership witnessed the dashboard warning lights and ran a diagnostic indicating the problem. The dealership ordered a replacement camera and replaced it. Parts and Labor were $2118.78. The first indication was when the warning lights began staying lit on my dash.
I began to hear a knocking noise at 2500 to 3500 rpms and I immediately took my vehicle to the dealer who confirmed rod bearing damage.
The forward collision system frequently goes off from a vehicle simply driving in their lane normally. The truck alarms, shakes the wheel, and sometimes brakes automatically. This is alarming for my kids riding in the car and the braking is dangerous for cars behind me. This could cause a rear end collision.
Engine began knocking from the bottom end at 53k miles. It was determined that a connecting rod bearing had failed and Honda is replacing my engine under warranty. No cost was incurred to me but I am adding my complaint because my VIN is not included in the recall for this exact problem in other years close to mine and the recall my need to be expanded to a wider range of VINs.
While making a right turn from a yield sign into oncoming traffic and doing about 15 mph, I depressed the accelerator to speed up and the truck stalled for about 2 seconds. The RPM's drop and you literally lunge forward until power resumes. No warning lights come on and no codes are given. This put my safety at risk and the driver accelerating towards me at risk. This is the first time it happened with my 2021 Ridgeline. However, my 2019 Ridgeline had this happen about a dozen times. Honda Service could never replicate the issue with the 2019 Ridgeline, but there was enough data out there about defective High Pressure Fuel Pumps that they agreed to replace the pump. After replacing the pump, the issue went away. Now my 2021 Ridgeline is doing the exact same thing. I can therefore only assume it's the High Pressure Fuel Pump again. I see that Honda recalled 628,000 vehicles in 2021 and then recalled an additional 720,000 vehicles in 2024 for the High Pressure Fuel Pump failing. My current VIN for some reason is not in this recall. Honda Corporate was of no help whatsoever when contacting them. They told me my truck is not under recall. This is a severe Safety Issue and Honda needs to expand the recall to cover my VIN and any other VIN's that are affected by this defective High Pressure Fuel Pump.
2021 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E. Part number 36160-T6Z-A62-M1 failure, hard code U3000-49. Results in total loss of Honda Sense Safety system. Including Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Traffic Sign Recognition, Auto High-Beam Headlights. This appears to be a fairly common issue across Honda models where the multipurpose camera fails, generally due to heat from exposure to sun. The replacement cost and required re-calibration via the dealer is ~$2000. Living in northern California with extreme heat, I will assume this problem will resurface after a few years resulting in another $2000+ repair.
Truck was waiting at a stop light in drive mode and foot on brake pedal. When the light changed to green. I tried to accelerate to go and the whole vehicle shook/lunges forward and shut off. Vehicle went into neutral and wouldn't allow me to go into drive mode. I had to restart the vehicle twice before it allowed me to go into drive again. Vehicle was stuck in the middle of the street with oncoming/ongoing traffic. I had this vehicle at the honda dealer(with documents) three times previous for this issue and its still not resolved. Please help.
My 2021 Honda Ridgeline engine failed in heavy traffic on the freeway. The car malfunctioned and I lost complete power and started coasting and barely made it through 4 lanes of heavy traffic before the car coasted to a stop. Very dangerous and very lucky not to get hit changing lanes and then waiting on the freeway for assistance. I've made regular oil changes as directed by the computer on the vehicle. The problem was not connected to a lack of oil. I'm [XXX] and I take very good care of my vehicles. Not one scratch on my black edition Ridgeline. My vehicle is still at the Honda dealership. I don't believe I should pay for another engine nor do I have the money to do so. Having a complete engine failure on the freeway is a major safety issue and Honda needs to fix it now and in the future. This has something to do with circuit board for the seat sensor that activates air bag? I can’t get dealer to take care of recall. They keep saying we don’t have the parts. This is going on since at least September of last year. Why have recall if they aren’t going to do anything about it? They make appointments and then cancel. I have called Honda Customer Service number(twice) listed on the recall paper twice. Always get told to call dealer and talk to them. Dealer makes appointment and then cancels a few days before the date to bring it in. I have contacted dealer many times about this. Why issue a recall and then don’t fix anything?
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that while at a stoplight, the Auto START/STOP feature malfunctioned, and after releasing the brake pedal, the engine failed to automatically restart as designed. After shifting back to park(P), the vehicle restarted and operated as normal. The cause of the failure was not yet been determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The contact was informed of the NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the investigation. The failure mileage was 50,500. The VIN was not available.
Auto High Beam. Very sensitive. Sometimes they don't go on when they should and sometimes, they stay on blinding oncoming traffic. I have researched this problem and also have been told this is a known problem with this particular model and year - not just my vehicle.
Vehicle has an open recall, but dealer still don't have the parts available to repair for almost a year.
2021 Honda Ridgeline Sport with 60,000 miles and no other issues. Engine failed to restart after the "auto stop/start" kicked in, all the lights on the dashboard went off and then turned off. After 1 minute, I was able to get the car started again, this happened on 3 different occasions over a 4 week period. Got the car tested and the starter was bad. Contacted Honda, they said too bad, no issues with the starter. I got the starter replaced for $800 and now NHTSA is investigating the issue Honda said was not an issue.
At 48,000 miles, the vehicle began to experience multiple Advanced Driver Assistance Systems problems, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keeping Assistance, which rendered all these systems inoperable. Systems that were designed to mitigate collisions became non-functional, and continuous warnings on the dashboard were a distraction while driving. Dealer scanned the vehicle with a code U300-40 Multipurpose Camera Unit/Millimeter Wave Radar Internal Electronic Failure, and diagnosed a failure of the multipurpose camera, which was then replaced and recalibrated. I have retained the failed unit after paying to have the replacement installed and calibrated. All warning lamps for the above mentioned systems flashed on my dashboard every time the vehicle was started, prior to the dealer repair. The safety of the driver and those around them was affected because repairs for this safety feature suite may be cost prohibitive to some ($2000) and they just won't fix it.
Headlights don't dim in the auto function when there is oncoming traffic. Lights cycle from dim to bright when no oncoming traffic is present. This is an ongoing problem that presents every time the vehicle is driven at night.
I have a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. It had a 3.5 liter V-6 with a 9 speed transmission. I was driving from Cincinnati to Cleveland on [XXX] Sunday [XXX]. It was about 25 degrees Fahrenheit outside and partly cloudy. After driving about 3 1/2 hours I exited the [XXX] and turned on to [XXX]. The on- ramp is a sharp right turn so you have to slow to around 25 mph or slower. When I gave my Honda gas to speed up to merge onto [XXX], the vehicle started shaking and the check engine light began to blink and the truck was almost unresponsive and went into "Limp" mode only using 2 or 3 cylinders and roughly shaking as I tried to accelerate. I pulled off to the side of the shoulder on the interstate, put my hazard lights on and drove to a nearby Honda dealer (about 3 miles away). It was a Sunday so the service department was not open. My family and I got a ride home and I began researching this issue in on-line forums and other Honda on-line threads. What I saw was a lot of people are having this exact problem with their Honda V6 vehicles. Story after story I read of this same situation that had just happened to me. 1. long drives of 1 hour or longer 2. Highway speeds 60-80 MPH 3. Cold weather usually below 32 degrees F 4. Slowing down off the highway then making a turn 5. Accelerating after turn then the vehicle goes into "limp" mode shaking, check engine light blinking, and vehicle is unresponsive or very weak Some of the owners were in Canada and some in United States but they all had the same situation that I had. In the Honda Ridgeline forums they took it to their dealers and most of the dealers said it was bad gas so when I called my dealer the next morning and that is what they said I was very skeptical and told about what I had read on-line, that this was a common problem and they said there was nothing they or Honda could do about it. The end result was a $1,700 bill.(I have a copy) Please look into this. Thanks. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 MPH, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment while accelerating and there was a loud popping sound coming from the engine compartment shortly afterwards. The low oil level warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to Firestone and was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle had not been repaired by Firestone but was instead towed to the dealer. The vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the connecting rods had disconnected, causing engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the repair was not covered under warranty due to the low oil levels. The contact confirmed that the low oil level warning light occurred during the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 52,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V321000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
MY CAR IS EQUIPE WITH A IDLE STOP START ASSITANT AND IN 3 OCASIONS DID NOT RESTAR THE VEHICLE AFTER STOPING ON A RED LIGHT, I HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN PARKING AND THEN TRY TO RE-START THE VEHICLE TRIYING 1 OR 2 TIME UNTIL STARTS UP.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that there was moisture inside driver's side headlight housing. The contact took the headlight assembly apart and blew out the moisture. There were no warning lights illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 43,928.
was denied recall for backup camera. my backup camera went dead July 4th weekend with heavy rain it worked again and glitch on and off. Made a appt 7/10/2024 at my local dealership where I bought the vehicle and was told they are going to take pictures of it and send them in for the harness. when I got there camera works atm and was denied on recall
I received my recall number:24V-321 in the mail. I also had an emission control warning notice come on so I took the truck to a Honda dealer. The same day my RVC starting going out so they looked at that. Bottom line: they said the emission problem was a loose something with getting my oil changed. They said my backup camera problem wasn’t due to recall and that I need a new camera and by the way it’s going to cost me $700. I have 56000 miles on it and am very unhappy with wha’t going on.
What happened? While driving in the right lane on a two lane highway, I slowed slightly when approaching a vehicle ahead of me. I then started to move into the left lane to pass when the engine stopped (as confirmed by the tachometer quickly dropping to 0 (zero) rpms). In response, I started feathering the throttle and moved back into the right lane where the engine restarted on its own. I then continued my trip without further incident. This happened with approximately 60,000 miles on the truck which was purchased new by me. I did have a similar incident when the truck was much newer but didn't pay much attention as I was still learning Honda's ADAS and wasn't sure if 'pilot error' came into play. And to clarify, the only safety that was in use this time was Lane Keeping Assist but it wasn't active as I was actively signaling my lane change. Questions under your General Guidelines: While the engine stopped unexpectedly, I don't believe it was an engine fault simply due to the number of miles I've driven the truck with no similar problem. While my wife and I weren't at risk since traffic was light at the time with no one behind us, I can see a safety issue in heavier traffic, especially if the engine doesn't restart as soon as it did. The truck has not been inspected by Honda. I did file a complaint with American Honda (case #14787271) and they simply suggested a visit to my local Honda service department. But due to the very limited occurrence of this issue, I can't see how their service department can be of any help. During the incident occurrence, there were no warning lights, messages or otherwise hints of an impending problem.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V321000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 35 MPH, the driver depressed the accelerator pedal, but the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact's wife was able to pull over to the side of the road. No warning lights were illuminated. The driver shut off the vehicle, and the vehicle was able to restart and return to normal functionality. The contact called the dealer and was informed to disengage the "Econ Mode". The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and filed a claim. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH and attempting to slow down for slower traffic ahead, the vehicle then failed to accelerate above 30 MPH. The vehicle was driven across three lanes of traffic onto the shoulder. After stopping and restarting the vehicle, the failure self-corrected and the vehicle operated normally. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 22,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact received a notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V321000 (Back Over Prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that occasionally while in reverse, the reverse camera image display would flicker a distorted image. The local dealer was not contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.
While driving down highway moonroof exploded. Did not appear to be damaged by debris.
3/4/2024. Backup camera failure. Black screen. Located broken wires in wiring harness. Same location as those in earlier recall.
Rear view camera failed. Only shows a black screen, same symptoms of the 2017-2020 Honda Ridgeline recall. Contacted Honda and was told it wasn’t covered and to pay to get it fixed. 2021 Ridgeline with 47,000 miles. I’m aware NHTSA has received 27 other complaints as well based upon a recent report.
The backup camera is not working consistently. An Internet search reveals that this is a common problem and previous model years were subject to a recall. I understand that there is a NHTSA investigation on going regarding this issue.
A truck and car in front of me stopped suddenly and i has to push brakes to stop. my truck did not slow down and i hit almost full speed the truck in front of me. my brakes did not even leave i skid mark.
Back up camera blacks out from time to time.
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 224V064000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts would be available in January 2025. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
While traveling at highway speed, the glass panel of the sunroof/moonroof suddenly exploded outward without being struck by anything (i.e. rock, debris). There was no warning prior to the explosion. Glass fragments rained down into the interior of the cabin and flew off the roof of the vehicle as well. Though startling to experience, there were no injuries to me or other drivers. Other Honda owners have reported this same experience with randomly exploding sunroof glass. The vehicle was taken to a Honda dealer who refused to cover the cost of replacing the glass, falsely stating that only an impact could cause such damage. A subsequent claim has been submitted to my insurance company.
I’ve had issues with the side view mirrors with this vehicle since the day that i took delivery. They were always wobbly. Honda issued a recall on them and the replacement mirrors look like “fun house” mirrors. They are super distorted and make me nauseous looking out of them. This is not an isolated incident. Many people are experiencing issues with the recalled mirrors being distorted. Honda needs to come up with another recall and real fix for this
I took my vehicle in to the dealer on 1/31/2023 to address recall 23-008 (Idle stop/start switch update). I had not had any problems with it , but I had them inspect it. They performed Bulletin 23-008, PGM-FI update. On 2/16/2023, after stopping at a stoplight, the engine shut down but it didn’t start back up when I tried to proceed. A message came up on the dash saying to put the vehicle in park and press the start button. I did that and the car started. I stopped at the dealer and told them what had happened and they performed bulletin 1103A8 Warrany Extension Campaign: Adjust Valves. I haven’t had the problem reoccur, but I keep getting an intermittent message on the dash, “Auto Engine Idle Stop Unavailable “. I’ve had the vehicle back in to the dealer numerous times about the message and they tell me that they could not duplicate, or they give me a list of things that could cause the message, but none of them apply. I believe it was something that they did in the two bulletins that is causing the message to come up on the dash
After driving on the freeway for about 1 hour, took the exit to the right. Check engine light came on and vehicle had loss of power and was shuttering. Attempts at accelerating were met with little to no power. Tried turning off eco mode, no change. Limped to the first safe place to stop, avoiding any fast traffic behind. Shut off vehicle, and when I started again, no check engine light, vehicle operated as normal. I fear to think what would have happened when if my child were driving and had to make a merge onto heavy traffic. This is a serious safety issue that I have learned is known. A fix needs to happen before someone is seriously hurt.
1. Vehicle shift to neutral while driving. 2. Shift vehicle from park to drive, but vehicle shift to neutral and alert for transmission failure comes on. 3. While waiting at a stop light in drive and on brake, vehicle shift to neutral and alert for transmission failure comes on.
While driving on a 4 lane road with a passing lane the automatic emergency braking system started slowing the vehicle down for a vehicle in the left hand turning lane. It was not directly in front of me. The warning tone and BRAKE flashing alarm come on frequently when driving on 2 lane roads and a vehicle is coming from the other direction. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times to have it corrected and was told everything is working correctly and for me to turn the system off.
the TPMS tire pressure monitoring system is inaccurate(low) by 4-5 PSI. This forces me to overinflate the tires by 4-5 PSI to Turn off the warning lights. I believe running constantly on over inflated tires is unsafe over time. It has been reported to the dealer on the past 3 services and they stated in writing that is normal for all the 2021 models
The contact owns a 2021 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that the back over prevention camera was distorted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that the back over prevention camera needed to be replaced; however, the part to repair the vehicle was on backorder. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
My model has an auto high-beam system that does not work (stays on with oncoming traffic, turns off when it sees a road sign). Also had a 2019 of the same vehicle and the auto high-beams worked on that model; my 2021 has the cameras in a new location which render the system worthless and dangerous.
Tailgate fell down while taking off from a red light, ground was flat and even. The vehicle also didn't trigger the light that the tailgate was open.
