TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE NHTSA CAMPAIGN 09V125000, FRONT SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM APPROXIMATELY TWO OR THREE MONTHS AGO. SHE CALLED THE DEALER TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR JULY 6, 2010. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED DUE TO THE SAFETY ISSUE INVOLVED WITH THE CONTROL ARMS CONSIDERING SHE HAS BEEN WAITING ON THE PARTS FOR THREE MONTHS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 146,000.
WE OWN A 2002 ELANTRA AND WHEN PUMPING GAS, IT CONSTANTLY SHUTS OFF AFTER ABOUT 50 CENTS WORTH OF GAS AND IT TAKES FOREVER TO FILL UP THE TANK. PRETTY AGGRAVATING TO SAY THE LEAST. *TR
MY 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA ACCELERATED AFTER MAKING A HESITATION AND A VERY LOUD NOISE. I CRASHED INTO A TREE HEAD ON AND HAD MULTIPLE INJURIES. A WITNESS SAID HE HEARD THE LOUD NOISE AND THE CAR TAKE OFF WITH A GREAT AMOUNT OF SPEED. AFTER THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE TOWING YARD, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE ACCELERATOR WAS STILL WIDE OPEN WHEN THEY STARTED THE CAR TO MOVE IT. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND FILLED OUT PAPERWORK THEY REQUESTED AND THEY SENT A GENTLEMAN DOWN TO CHECK THE AUTO OVER AND SCAN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM, WITHIN THE MONTH FOLLOWING THE INSPECTION I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HYUNDAI STATING THE INSPECTION FOUND NO PROBLEMS. I REQUESTED A COPY OF THE REPORT AND WAS DENIED. I CONTACTED AN ATTORNEY AND HYUNDAI ALSO REFUSED TO GIVE HIM THE REPORT STATING "CONFIDENTIALLY PRIVILEGES. I'M THE ONLY OWNER OF THE AUTO AND FEEL THAT HYUNDAI IS HIDING SOMETHING SINCE THEY REFUSE TO TURN OVER THE REPORT. HYUNDAI REPLACED THE MOTOR IN APP.2004 BECAUSE IT BLEW UP AFTER THEY REPAIRED A RECALL. *TR
TL * THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH ON NORMAL CONDITIONS, THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE COLLAPSED WITHOUT WARNING. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, HE FOUND THE FRONT PASSENGER WHEEL PARTIALLY DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC CONTRIBUTED THE FAILURE TO A FRACTURED LOWER CONTROL ARM. THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM); HOWEVER, THE REMEDY FAILED TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO REIMBURSE THE CONTACT FOR THE SERVICE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,751. UPDATED 05/06/10. *LJ THE CONSUMER STATED HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR THE RECALL. THE DEALER TREATED THE RIGHT CONTROL AR, WITH RUST PROOFING MATERIAL INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE ARM. RECEIVED SAFETY RECALL NOTICE REGARDING CONTROL ARM & SUBFRAME ON OUR 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA ON WED. MAR 3,2010. PLAN WAS TO CONTACT DEALERSHIP ON SAT.(MAR 6,2010) TO SCHEDULE APPOINTMENT FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. RECEIVED A PANIC CALL FROM MY WIFE THAT SOMETHING HAD SNAPPED AS SHE WAS CROSSING THE RHINECLIFF BRIDGE . FORTUNATELY THIS OCCURRED JUST AS SHE WAS EXITING THE TOLL BOOTH. BOOTH OPERATOR ASSISTED HER IN GETTING CAR OUT OF MAIN FLOW OF TRAFFIC AND CALLING A TOW TRUCK. TOW TRUCK DRIVER CONFIRMED THAT CONTROL ARM HAD SNAPPED AS DID THE HYUNADI DEALER (WHERE CAR WAS PURCHASED). DEALER ALSO SAID THERE WERE NUMEROUS OTHER RECALLS CONCERNING THIS VEHICLE THAT THEY WOULD ALSO BE REPAIRING. WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED OF ANY OF THESE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE CONTROL ARM ISSUE AND IN THAT CASE IT FAILED WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF OUR NOTICE. MY QUESTION IS WHY IS IT THAT WERE ONLY NOTIFIED A FEW DAYS AGO REGARDING SUCH AS SERIOUS ISSUE WHEN THE ORIGINAL RECALL NOTICE WAS DATED NEARLY 11 MONTHS AGO. AND NEVER NOTIFIED REGARDING OTHER RECALLS. BY THE WAY THE DEALER HAD THE NERVE TO CHARGE MY WIFE FOR A LOANER VEHICLE AND SAID PARTS WILL NEED TO BE ORDERED. OBVIOUSLY I AM VERY THANKFUL THAT NEITHER MY WIFE OR ANYONE ELSE WERE INJURED. BUT I REMAIN FURIOUS THAT THIS EVER HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE. *TR
2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. STEERING ISSUES *GR THE CONSUMER STATED HIS DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE, WHEN SUDDENLY IT WOULD NOT STEER CORRECTLY AND A THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. WHEN SHE EXITED THE VEHICLE, SHE NOTICED THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL WAS POSITIONED OUTWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND UPON INSPECTION, THE LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMERS WIFE DISCOVERED A RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED FOR THE EXACT PROBLEM, BUT A RECALL WAS NEVER RECEIVED. HYUNDAI WAS UNABLE TO GIVE THE CONSUMER A SATISFACTORY ANSWER AS TO WHY THEY NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL. *JB
TL * THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000: SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM. HE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER FOR REPAIRS BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE CONTACT DID NOT FEEL HE WAS ABLE TO HAVE REPAIRS MADE WITHIN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. HE STATED THAT HE WANTED TO HAVE THE ISSUE RESOLVED IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT ANY UNWARRANTED INCIDENTS. THE CONTACT HAS NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE AT THIS TIME.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 10 MPH, ONE OF THE TIRES DISCONNECTED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 81,000.
DRIVER SEAT POSITION LOCK COMES LOOSE WHILE DRIVING AND SEAT SLIDES BACK ON ITS OWN. NEAR MISS OR CRASH. *TR
2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. INTERNAL CORROSION AND THINNING OF STEEL *GR UPON LEAVING WORK ON FEBRUARY 10, 2010, THE CONSUMER BACKED UP AND THE FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A AUTO BODY CENTER. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE CONTROL ARM HAD RUSTED THROUGH ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND THE LEFT SIDE WAS RUSTED AS WELL. DUE TO THE COST OF THE REPAIRS, THE CONSUMER DECIDED TO GET RID OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE WRECKAGE YARD. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE WAS NOT INFORMED OF A RECALL AND HAD SHE KNOWN ABOUT THE RECALL, SHE WOULD HAVE KEPT THE VEHICLE AND HAD IT REPAIRED.*JB
DASH BOARD AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON - NO CRASH, ETC. LIGHT STAYS ON. APPOINTMENT AT LOCAL DEALER TO DIAGNOSE. *TR
ON JAN16TH,2010 MY CAR BECAME DISABLED WHILE DRIVING. LUCKILY, I WAS ONLY DRIVING ABOUT 5 MILES AN HOUR WHEN I SUDDENLY LOST CONTROL OF STEERING MY CAR. AFTER STOPPING ON THE ROAD, I TRIED TO DRIVE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAS UNABLE TO GET THE CAR TO MOVE. AT THAT POINT, I CALLED A LOCAL TOWING COMPANY AND THEY TOWED MY CAR TO A LOCAL AUTO SHOP. WHEN THE SHOP OPENED ON MONDAY JANUARY 18TH THEY CALLED ME TO INFORM ME THAT THE PART THAT FAILED ON MY CAR, THE LOWER CONTROL ARM, WAS ACTUALLY UNDER A MANUFACTURER RECALL FROM APRIL 2009 (HYUNDAI RECALL #091).THEY THEN GAVE ME A COPY OF THE RECALL NOTICE FROM ALLDATAPRO.COM. I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF THIS RECALL. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS CAR AND HAVE LIVED AT MY CURRENT ADDRESS SINCE APRIL 2000. I HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF OTHER RECALLS IN THE PAST BY MAIL. AT THIS POINT, THE SHOP DID A FULL SAFETY INSPECTION OF THE CAR AND I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AT WHICH I PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2002, MIKE KELLY HYUNDAI, BUTLER PA. SINCE THE PARTS WHERE ON BACKORDER, I WAITED ALMOST 2 WEEKS FOR MY CAR TO BE REPAIRED. HAD I BEEN INFORMED OF THE RECALL, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SCHEDULE THIS REPAIR AT A MUTUALLY CONVENIENT TIME, AND BEFORE THE WORST OF WINTER, WHICH SEEMED TO BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO THE CORROSION THAT LED TO THE FAILURE OF THE CONTROL ARM AND ONLY BY LUCK WAS I NOT HURT OR KILLED. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED BY HYUNDAI FREE OF CHARGE , AS IT WAS A RECALL. I AM AWAITING REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE TOWING CHARGES.
2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA RECALL NEVER RECEIVED UNTIL 3/1/10. WHEEL FELL OFF AND WENT IN DITCH. HAD TO HAVE TOWED TO GARAGE AND HYUNDAI REFUSED PAYMENT OF TOWING BILL AS TOWING WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL. HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO GET IT TO THE GARAGE. THANK GOODNESS NO ONE WAS HURT; IT COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON DUE TO LOOSE CONNECTION UNDER DRIVERS SEAT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER HAVING THE AIR BAGS FRONTAL, SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE (08V53300) REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL THE AIR BAG LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT SINCE THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE FOR FREE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE AIR BAG COULD DEPLOY WHILE DRIVING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
I'VE OWNED MY CURRENT 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA SINCE 2002 (I'M THE ORIGINAL OWNER) AND MY PREVIOUS CAR WAS ALSO A HYUNDAI. I'VE TOLD MANY PEOPLE WHAT GOOD CARS THEY ARE. LAST WEEK I NOTICED SOME "PLAY" IN MY WHEEL AND PLANNED TO GET AN ALIGNMENT DONE THIS WEEK. ON THURSDAY NIGHT ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK MY CAR SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AND MY WHEELS WENT IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. LUCKILY I WAS TURNING DOWN A ROAD VERY CLOSE TO MY HOME SO I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 15 MPH, MY 6 AND 3 YR OLDS WEREN'T WITH ME, AND NO OTHER CARS WERE COMING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OR THIS COULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE LOCAL GUY WHO INFORMED ME THAT MY LOWER CONTROL ARMS WERE BAD (ONE RUSTED AND BROKEN, THE OTHER WITH HOLES) AND THAT THIS WAS LIKELY A RECALL ITEM AND I SHOULD CONTACT MY DEALERSHIP RATHER THAN PAY HIM FOR REPAIRS THAT MIGHT BE COVERED (VERY NICE GUY). I FOUND OUT THIS IS A RECALL ITEM. BOTH HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND GRAPPONE HYUNDAI LET ME KNOW I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR THE TOW (IT WAS $125) TO GET MY CAR THERE, AND FOR A RENTAL VEHICLE WHILE MY CAR WAS OUT OF COMMISSION. I HAD THE CAR TOWED THERE ON FRIDAY AS QUICKLY AS I COULD. I CALLED THIS MORNING AT 9AM TO FIND OUT HOW LONG I NEED TO GET A RENTAL FOR AND AFTER WAITING FOR ABOUT 20 RINGS SOMEONE FINALLY PICKED UP THE PHONE AND LET ME KNOW THAT NOBODY WOULD EVEN LOOK AT MY CAR UNTIL MONDAY AND THAT I SHOULD PLAN ON PAYING FOR A RENTAL FOR AT LEAST A WEEK. THIS WILL BE THE LAST HYUNDAI I OWN AND I'M VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE FACT THAT A DEFECT THAT COULD HAVE KILLED ME (I TAKE THE HIGHWAY HOME MOST NIGHTS AND JUST LOST A SISTER IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN JUNE) NOW IS GOING GO COST ME HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH ON A SLIGHT INCLINE. THE VEHICLE STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE CROSS MEMBER ASSEMBLY AND CONTROL ARM. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM) THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT WAS DISPLEASED TO KNOW AN ADDITIONAL REPAIR COST FOR THE DRIVER FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL REMEDY PERFORMED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA WHICH WAS PURCHASED IN JUNE 2004. HE HEARD A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE RIGHT FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED, HOWEVER BEFORE HE COULD TAKE THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE, WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF LESS THAN 30 MPH THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL COMPONENT FELL OFF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SWERVED AND CAUSED HIM TO CRASH WITH A CEMENT CURB. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTO BODY MECHANIC WHERE THEY REPAIRED THE FRONT RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM AND OTHER UNKNOWN REPAIRS. THERE WAS AN OPEN RECALL ON THE VEHICLE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V125000) HOWEVER HE DID NOT RECEIVE NOTIFICATION UNTIL WEEKS AFTER THE INCIDENT. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 132,000.
MY HUSBAND AND I ARE THE OWNERS OF A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT, AND ARE THE ONLY OWNERS OF RECORD AND HAVE MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE IN A REASONABLE MANNER. ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4 2009, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH APPROACHING A LEFT TURN LIGHT, WHEN I NEEDED TO STOP SUDDENLY TO AVOID HITTING A CAR THAT STOPPED ABRUPTLY IN FRONT OF ME. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES, I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE CAR BEGAN TO PULL TO THE LEFT, PLACING MY VEHICLE INTO THE ON-COMING TRAFFIC LANE. FORTUNATELY, MY VEHICLE DID NOT HIT ANY OTHER VEHICLES OR ROADSIDE OBSTACLES. AFTER COMING TO A FULL STOP, I MANAGED TO NEGOTIATE THE LEFT TURN, IN ORDER TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OUT OF A 5-POINT INTERSECTION AND INTO A SAFER AREA. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS ENGAGED IN THE TURN, I HEARD METAL GRINDING AGAINST METAL. I PULLED THE CAR OFF OF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY INTO THE FIRST AVAILABLE TURN OFF, WHICH HAPPENED TO BE A CHURCH PARKING LOT. UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER IN A SERVICEABLE CONDITION AND WOULD NEED TO BE TOWED. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR WAS SIGNIFICANTLY TORN BETWEEN THE SHOCK MOUNT AND THE BALL JOINT. THE CORROSION DAMAGE IS SIGNIFICANT ON THE INTERIOR OF THE ARM. IT LOOKS AS IF IT BLEW UP. THERE IS STILL A SMALL PORTION THAT IS STILL ATTACHED BUT IT IS COMPLETELY IMMOBILE. THE TIRE IS PUSHED UP AGAINST THE WHEEL WELL. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE LACK OF COOPERATION THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED FROM HYUNDAI CORPORATE OFFICE RECALL DIVISION. THEY HAVE NOT AGREED TO FIX ANY DAMAGE TO THE CAR AS A RESULT OR REIMBURSE EXPENSES INCURRED DUE TO THE INCIDENT. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, THEY CLAIM THE REASON WE DIDN'T GET A NOTICE ABOUT THE RECALL IS BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT EVERYONE TO COME IN AT THE SAME TIME SO THEY ARE SPACING IT OUT! IT'S COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE OF THEM TO NOT NOTIFY THE CONSUMER OF THIS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT! I AM 6 MONTHS PREGNANT AND OFTEN DRIVE MY 2 YR OLD! *TR
ON NOVEMBER 27TH, 2009 I WAS COMING TO A STOP AT THE BOTTOM OF AN INTERSTATE OFF-RAMP, WHEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE IN THE FRONT OF MY 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT. I TRIED TO MOVE FORWARD AND IT FELT LIKE I HAD A FLAT TIRE, BUT WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL WAS TURNED INWARD. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND INSPECT THE UNDER CARRIAGE, THE LEFT FRONT CONTROL ARM HAD RUSTED TO THE POINT THAT IT HAD CRUMPLED WHEN I TRIED TO STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND WAS REPAIRED BY REPLACING BOTH FRONT CONTROL ARMS (THE RIGHT ARM WAS ALSO RUSTED). THE REASON I'M SENDING THIS MESSAGE IS BECAUSE MY STATE (KENTUCKY) IS NOT INVOLVED IN THE HYUNDAI RECALL (ID #58993) THAT WAS INVESTIGATED BY THE NHTSA, ACTION NUMBER PE09011. *TR
COLLAPSE OF CONTROL ARM AND LOSS OF STEERING WHILE DRIVING, NEVER RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE. THEY NEED TO GET THE RECALL OUT BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT BADLY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE ABOUT 25 MPH, THE ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON, POWER STEERING IS REMOVED AND THE ENGINE TURNS OFF. WHILE TRYING TO RESTART THE VEHICLE, THE DRIVER MUST PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR ONCE WHICH ALLOWS ENGINE POWER TO RETURN AND REGAIN FORWARD MOVEMENT, HOWEVER THE RPM GAUGE FLUCTUATES FROM BELOW 500 TO ABOVE 2000 AND THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF AGAIN. THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN OCCURS EVERY TIME THE AUTOMOBILE IS RE-FUELED. ONCE THE VEHICLE HAS STARTED RUNNING AND COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP, FUEL LEAKS OUT OF THE SAFETY CANISTER AT AN ALARMING RATE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS DUE TO THE TANK'S INABILITY TO ALERT THE GAS STATION FUEL GUN OF THE FUEL LEVEL INSIDE OF THE TANK. IN OTHER WORDS, THE TANK ACCEPTS MORE FUEL THAN IT IS DESIGNED TO ASSUME (APPROXIMATELY 2 GALLONS) DURING EVERY REFUEL. THIS IS NOT ONLY A SAFETY OR FIRE HAZARD FOR THE CURRENT DRIVER AND PASSENGERS, BUT IT AFFECTS ANY OTHER VEHICLE OR OBJECT SURROUNDING THE FUEL SPILL. THE FUEL VAPOR IS ALSO AN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY ISSUE. THE SCENT IN THE VEHICLE ALONE HAS CAUSED NAUSEA ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. A TECHNICIAN STATED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO MAKE A COMMITMENT TO PAY $1000 IN ORDER FOR HIM TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE ACCORDING TO RECALL. HE THEN ADDED THAT IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE REMEDY REFERENCED IN THE RECALL, HE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE MUFFLER DOWN. SHE THEN CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, AND A REPRESENTATIVE TOLD HER THAT THE DEALER WAS GOING TO CREATE ANOTHER ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 180,000.

I WAS DRIVING IN MY TOWN AND I WENT TO TAKE A LEFT TURN AND THE NEXT THING I KNEW MY STEERING WHEEL JOLTED FURTHER TO THE LEFT THAN I HAD TURNED IT AND I WAS IN ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I WAS ABOUT A MILE FROM MY HOUSE AND WAS BARELY ABLE TO GET THE CAR BACK HOME WITH OUT SWERVING ALL OVER THE ROAD TRYING TO STEER. I WENT ONLINE TO RESEARCH HOW MUCH IT MIGHT COST TO FIX AND FOUND THAT IT HAD BEEN A RECALL WITH HYUNDAI, HOWEVER I NEVER GOT THE RECALL NOTICE. I WAS COMING UP ON A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WAS SLOWING DOWN WHEN THE LEFT LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE IN HALF. LOST ALL STEERING,CAR HAD TO BE TOWED. *TR
LEFT (DRIVER'S SIDE) FRONT CONTROL ARM FAILURE ON 4/16/09. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN JUNE OF 2002. CURRENTLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 93,000 MILES. ALL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED ON VEHICLE (I.E., OIL CHANGES, 30K SERVICE, 60K SERVICE, 90K SERVICE). CONTROL ARM FAILED WHILE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES PER HOUR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CONTROL ARM WAS RUSTY IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH OVER A SPEED BUMP, IT FELT AS IF THE PASSENGER SIDE COLLAPSED. HE EXITED THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT SEE ANY VISIBLE SIGNS OF DAMAGE. AFTER THE INCIDENT, THE CONTACT NOTICED STEERING, GRINDING, AND RUBBING ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY IDENTIFIED THE RUSTED CONTROL ARM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT THE CONTACT HAS NOT YET RECEIVED A RESPONSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED AND THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 75,000.
2002 HYUNDAI ELANTRA WITH 69,692 MILES, ORIGINAL OWNER; DRIVING IN SCHOOL PARKING LOT, THE DRIVER-SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE IN TWO, SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION SHOWS IT TO HAVE ROTTED THROUGH. TIRE WAS PERPENDICULAR TO THE VEHICLE. TOWED TO HYUNDAI DEALER IN NATICK, MA. HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM DEALER YET, BUT OBVIOUSLY NEED A NEW LOWER CONTROL ARM AND AT LEAST AN INSPECTION OF PASSENGER-SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE. I EXPECT THIS TO BE COVERED UNDER 100,000 MILE TRANSAXLE WARRANTY; WE'LL SEE. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC AT HIGHWAY SPEED. *TR UPDATED 04/22/09.*JB
FEBRUARY 2009 I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE PERTAINING TO MY HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2002-THE ELECTRICAL WIRING UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT HAVING SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. I TOOK MY CAR IN AND THEY DID THE RECALL WORK AND NO PROBLEM. NEXT MORNING, I GO OUT TO MY CAR AND TURN THE KEY AND IT IS DEAD!!! NOTHING !!! SO I GAVE IT THE ALL OR NOTHING JIGGLE OF THIS THAT AND THE OTHER THING-AND ALAS! IT STARTED. I BRUSHED IT OFF AS A FLUKE-THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED FOUR TIMES WITHIN A MONTH AND TODAY IT IS STILL SITTING WHERE I PARKED IT THIS MORNING. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI DEALER TWICE TODAY JUST TO PICK HIS BRAINS AND GIVE ME SOME IDEA AS TO WHAT IT MIGHT BE CAUSING THIS-THE BATTERY IS NEW, TRIED JUMPING IT EARLIER TODAY. THE SHIFTER DOES NOT SEEM LIKE IT WANTS TO MOVE AT ALL EVEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL-THE MECHANIC SUGGESTED IT MIGHT BE THE ELECTRONIC SWITCH FOR THE SHIFTER-THIS MADE SENSE SINCE THE WIRING CORRECTION IS LOCATED IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA. PERHAPS OTHERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME THING. *TR
AFTER BRAKING, MY ELANTRA JERK, MADE AND AWFUL GRINDING SOUND, AND WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER. UPON VISUAL INSPECTION, I COULD SEE THAT A PART HAD BROKEN OFF. I HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO SAID THAT THE RIGHT FRONT CONTROL ARM WAS "ROTTED THROUGH" AND THAT THIS IS OFTEN SEEN IN HYUNDAIS. THE LEFT SIDE ALSO SHOWS SIGNS OF DETERIORATION. THE MECHANIC RECOMMENDED REPLACING BOTH SIDES, AS THE LEFT SIDE MIGHT ONLY LAST A FEW MONTHS GIVEN THE DEGREE OF DETERIORATION. PARTS ARE BEING REPLACED. *TR
I HAD TO PUT ON THE BRAKES HARD TO STOP FROM HITTING A CAR THAT STOPPED SHORT. THE CAR JERKED AND WHEN I BEGAN TO PROCEED THERE WAS CLEARLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE FRONT END. I GOT THE CAR TO OUR LOCAL DEALER WHO IS JUST A MILE AWAY FROM WHERE THIS OCCURRED AND AFTER THE CAR WAS INSPECTED WAS TOLD THAT THE FRONT END CAME WITHIN 1/2" OF CORRODED METAL FROM BREAKING OFF. THERE WAS ONLY 1/2" OF METAL LEFT HOLDING IT IN PLACE. I WAS TOLD THE FRONT CONTROL ARMS WERE BOTH "ANNHILATED" AND WERE COMPLETED RUSTED OUT. I HAVE TO REPLACE BOTH OF THEM AT A COST OF MORE THAN $1000. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND SPENT 2002-2008 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE SUBJECT TO THE SALT AND WINTER CONDITIONS. IT ONLY HAS LESS THAN 85,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS TREATED WELL AND SERVICED ROUTINELY. LIKE OTHER CONSUMERS, WHO HAVE REPORTED THIS ISSUE, I FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED AND THAT THERE IS CLEARLY A DEFECT ON THE FRONT CONTROL ARMS WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO BECOME SUBJECT TO CORROSION. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE JUST 1 MILE TO THE DEALER WHO WILL BE PERFORMING SERVICE, BUT SHOULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED WHILE FURTHER AWAY, I WAS TOLD I WAS ONE POTHOLE AWAY FROM THE WHOLE FRONT END FALLING OFF. IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT SEVERE DAMAGE AND POTENTIAL PERSONAL HARM COULD HAVE OCCURRED IF THE CAR HAD BEEN IN A COLLISION OR WORSE, IF THE CONTROL ARMS HAD BROKEN FREE WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY OR AT INCREASED SPEEDS. THIS IS CLEARLY DANGEROUS AND I HAD NO REASON TO THINK THAT A CAR THAT'S 7 YEARS OLD COULD SUFFER SOMETHING LIKE THIS UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS. *TR
