WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE BEFORE ACCELERATING. ALSO WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WAS PUT INTO REVERSE, THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE BEFORE SUDDENLY MOVING BACKWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BUT NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE DEFECT AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED. THIS IS STARTING TO HAPPEN DAILY. I HAVE NOTICED THAT MANY PEOPLE ON THIS SITE HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE. THIS REALLY NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO BEFORE IT BECOMES A BIGGER PROBLEM. IT CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS. WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE AND ENTER HIGHWAYS IT'S A PROBLEM. THE CAR HESITATES AND REVS BEFORE ACCELERATING. *TR
MADE A LEFT TURN AND BEGAN ACCELERATING TO 30 MPH WHEN COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING OCCURRED AND EPS (ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING) LIGHT AND ESC LIGHTS ACTIVATED ON DASHBOARD. SHUT OFF VEHICLE & CHECKED ALL HOSES, BELTS, FUSES - ALL APPEARED NORMAL. READ ONLINE THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AROUND 56000 MILES FOR HYUNDAI ELANTRAS. TURNED CAR BACK ON AND POWER STEERING WORKS NOW BUT I AM TERRIFIED OF LOSING CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AGAIN IN A BUSIER STREET. I AM THINKING OF TAKING IT TO THE DEALER TO SEE IF IT IS WARRANTIED AS OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT!!! *TR
CAR POWER GOES OUT FOR A FEW SECONDS WHILE DRIVING. HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SUCH AS WHEN TURNING LIGHTS ON OR SIGNAL AND ALL LIGHTS ON DASH GO OUT. CAR HAS ALSO LOST POWER WHEN PUTTING IT INTO REVERSE AND HAD TO RESTART IT. ITS AN AUTOMATIC SO SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING. ALSO AUTO LOCKS AREN'T AT TIMES. HYUNDAI HAS ALREADY REPLACED THE RADIO AND LOCKS THINKING THIS WAS THE FIX AND CLEARLY ITS NOT. *TR
DRIVING TO WORK TODAY THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON WHILE IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING LANES. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO DO A BIT OF SWERVING. MANAGED TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE. PRIOR TO ALL THIS, I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE EPS AS IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS HAPPENING BEFORE. THE LIGHT WOULD COME ON, THE VEHICLE WOULD LOCK UP AND UPON TURNING OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, IT WOULD RESET ITSELF. I WENT AND SAW A MECHANIC , THEY ALLEGED TESTING THE VEHICLE FOR THE EPS PROBLEM HOWEVER NOTHING CAME UP AND THEY REFUSED TO ADDRESS THAT ISSUE. , I CALLED HYUNDAI WARRANTY DEPARTMENT AND FILED COMPLAIN SINCE I JUST RUN OUT OF WARRANTY AND PRIOR TO THIS I HAD MY CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE AND LEFT WITHOUT REPAIRS BEING DONE DUE TO NO CODE SHOWING .I WAS TOLD I SHOULD GET THE ISSUES FIXED AND HOPE I MID BE REFUNDED. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND A DEFECT ON THEIR PART WHICH NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND AT THE EXPENSE OF HYUNDAI. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT AS I EXPECTED MORE FROM THEM AND HAVE GOTTEN NOTHING BESIDES BILLS LEFT TO PAY FOR SOMETHING HYUNDAI KNEW WAS AN ON GOING ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE THEY HAD BEEN SELLING. WITH THE EXCUSE THEY CANT WORK ON A CAR UNLESS THE CODE IS SHOWING. WELL DEAR HYUNDAI THE LIGHT SHUTS OFF WHEN U TURN THE CAR OFF AND IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE TO AN DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO LOCK AT THE ISSUE AND IT IS RIDICULES TO HAVE A RUN AROUND FOR A WELL KNOW ISSUE ON YOUR PRODUCT THAT CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE EXITING THE VEHICLE, SHE SUSTAINED LACERATIONS TO THE FINGERS FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR HANDLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
PURCHASED ELANTRA JULY 12, 2012. I CALLED MY BROTHER FOR FINANCING INFORMATION. HE CAME TO THE DEALERSHIP. MAZDA OF ORANGE. WHEN HE STARTED READING THE CONTRACT THE BECAME VERY UPSET. HE CALLED OUT THE SALESMAN FOR THE EXTRA CHARGES, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ME, BY NOT TELLING ME I DIDN'T HAVE TO ADD THESE THINGS. THE MANAGER, ASK ME TO COME TO HIS OFFICE TO CLOSE THE DEAL. I NEEDED A CO-SIGNER. A FRIEND OF MINE SAID HE WOULD CO-SIGN. WE SIGNED. THE FIRST MALFUNCTION WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL. I WAS IN THE NUMBER ONE LANE THE TRAFFIC BEGAN TO SLOW. SO I TAPPED THE BRAKE, AGAIN AND AGAIN, IT WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. EVEN THOUGH I WAS APPLYING THE BRAKES. I WAS TERRIFIED AND TREMBLING. THE SECOND INCIDENT WAS WHEN, I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING PLACE, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BREAK. EVEN THOUGH I WAS APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE CAR SPED UP WENT OVER TWO CEMENT STOPS ULTIMATELY HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE HEAD ON. THIS VEHICLE WAS PUSHED BACK APPROXIMATELY 6 FT. THE THIRD MALFUNCTION, WAS SEPTEMBER 25TH, 2013. UPON THE REQUEST OF A FRIEND, I PICK UP HER DAUGHTER FROM SCHOOL. WHEN WE GOT HOME, I PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY ON A SLANT. WE REMOVED THE PACKAGES FROM THE TRUNK INTO THE HOUSE. I SAT DOWN IN THE DRIVERS SEAT, WITH MY FEET OUTSIDE THE CAR ON THE PAVEMENT. THE CAR LUNGED VERY HARD AND FAST BACKWARDS. I, SUBSEQUENTLY WAS PULLED DOWN AND UNDER THE CAR. I WAS DRAGGED 12 TO 15 FT. WHEN IT STOPPED, MY CAR HAD HIT ANOTHER CAR. I ENDED UP UNDER MY VEHICLE, IN SERIOUS CONDITION. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAYTRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION HAD REPORTED ON-LINE THAT THERE WERE EXTENSIVE RECALLS ON THIS VERY MODEL. I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE ANY NOTICE. *TR
WITH MY CAR RUNNING, I WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVERS SEAT, WITH MY LEGS AND FEET OUTSIDE THE CAR, ON A DRIVE WAY. MY CAR CAME OUT OF PARK, INTO REVERSE AND DRUG MY FEET AND LEGS UNDER THE CAR, WHILE SHOOTING BACKWARDS. MY CAR STOPPED WHEN IT CAME TO REST ON ANOTHER CAR. THE PERSON, WHOSE CAR I HIT AND THE WOMEN FROM THE HOUSE, WHERE I WAS VISITING PULLED ME OUT FROM UNDER THE CAR. *TR
The contact owns a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 40-50 MPH, the power steering assist warning light illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road and turned the vehicle. The contact was able to continue driving. However, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was taken the dealer on two occasions. The dealer updated the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) control unit. However, the failure persisted. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact they no longer had the part to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V100000 (Steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. The contact stated that the vehicle was purchased used from the dealer and was aware of the issues from the start. The issue was always repaired by the dealer while the vehicle was under warranty. The steering issue was temporarily fixed by stopping and restarting the engine. Recently, the issue could not be fixed by restarting the engine. At no cost to the contact, the dealer repaired the EPS and the problem was resolved.
AT 36,000 MILES I NEEDED ALL NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS AND THE 2 FRONT TIRES WERE COMPLETELY WORN TO EXTREME UNSAFE CONDITION. SPENT OVER $680 TO REPAIR IT ALL. *TR
I PUT MY 2010 HYUNDAI ELANTRA IN THE GARAGE ABOUT 11:00 PM ON SUNDAY NIGHT AUGUST 11, 2013. AT ABOUT 01:00 AM ON AUGUST 12, 2013 I WAS AWAKENED WITH MY ENTIRE GARAGE ON FIRE. THE FIRE APPEARED TO COME FROM THE FRONT OF THE ELANTRA, AS BOTH FRONT TIRES WERE COMPLETELY BURNED WITH ONLY STEEL WIRES WRAPPED AROUND WHEELS. ENGINE IS WARPED AND BURNED. ENTIRE FRONT END MELTED. I LOST MY GARAGE AND CONTENTS ALONG WITH KAYAKS ON KAYAK TRAILER PARKED BESIDE GARAGE. BOTH NEIGHBORS' PRIVACY FENCES WERE BURNED DOWN BEHIND AND BESIDE MY GARAGE. THE ELANTRA BURNED COMPLETELY FROM THE FIRE. NO STEERING WHEEL OR UPHOLSTERY LEFT. ALL ALUMINUM PARTS MELTED. RADIATOR MELTED. WIRES MELTED. EVEN THE BATTERY WAS MELTED. *TR
RETURNING FROM SOUTH JERSEY WITH MY MINOR SON, THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON WHILE IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING LANES. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO DO A BIT OF SWERVING. MANAGED TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND CALL FOR HELP. PRIOR TO ALL THIS, VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HYUNDAI IN PARAMUS, NJ FOR A RECALL FOR SOME OTHER PART. AT THIS TIME, I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE EPS AS IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS HAPPENING BEFORE. THE LIGHT WOULD COME ON, THE VEHICLE WOULD LOCK UP AND UPON TURNING OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, IT WOULD RESET ITSELF. AT HYUNDAI, THEY ALLEGED TESTING THE VEHICLE FOR THE EPS PROBLEM HOWEVER NOTHING CAME UP AND THEY REFUSED TO ADDRESS THAT ISSUE. THIS TIME ON 8/10/13, THE LIGHT IS NOW ON AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT REST ITSELF. I TRIED CALLING HYUNDAI FOR THIS DEFECT AND WAS PUT ON HOLD INDEFINITELY. I THEN SENT AN EMAIL TO THEM ABOUT IT AND THEY REFUSED TO RESPOND. IN MY EMAIL TO THEM, I EXPRESSED THIS WAS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND A DEFECT ON THEIR PART WHICH NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND AT THE EXPENSE OF HYUNDAI. STILL NO RESPONSE. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT AS I EXPECTED MORE FROM THEM AND HAVE GOTTEN NOTHING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIFTING AT ABOUT 20 MPH, THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE COMPUTER REPORTED A CRASH BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT SUFFER ANY BODY DAMAGE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000. UPDATED 10-21-13 *BF THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED.

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WAS PUT INTO REVERSE, THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE BEFORE SUDDENLY MOVING BACKWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BUT NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
WAS DRIVING ON FREEWAY AND EPS LIGHT CAME ON AND ELECTRONIC STEERING WENT OUT. CAR BECAME IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE LEFT SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY. AFTER STOPPING THE CAR AND TURNING IT BACK ON, THE VEHICLE OPERATED FINE UNTIL 5 MONTHS LATER. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. FINALLY ON JUNE 30, 2013, IT HAPPENED A THIRD TIME. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND HAVE FOUND IT TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AND ONE OF SAFETY. HYUNDAI REFUSED TO FIX IT. *TR
CPSC: 2010 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. CONSUMER STATED HER HUSBAND WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT, AND THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *LN THE CONSUMER STATED THE HUSBAND PASSED OUT AT THE WHEEL, DUE TO A MEDICAL CONDITION. ACCORDING TO THE POLICE, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, CROSSED THE ONCOMING LANE, HIT A LARGE CABLE BOX, THEN HIT A TREE WITH SUCH FORCE THAT THE VEHICLE OVER TURNED. HE SUSTAINED MULTIPLE INJURIES. HYUNDAI INVESTIGATED THE MATTER, AND DETERMINED THE AIR BAGS PERFORMED AS DESIGNED.

TRAVELING IN A 40 MPH ZONE APPROACHING A RED LIGHT. BEGAN DECELERATING AND APPLYING BRAKE. EPS (ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING) LIGHT AND ESC LIGHTS ACTIVATED ON DASHBOARD; COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING OCCURRED. SHUT OFF VEHICLE & CHECKED ALL FUSES - ALL APPEARED NORMAL; NO POWER STEERING OR ESC FUNCTIONING. VEHICLE SERVICED BY DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED A SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS IN THE STEERING COLUMN. REPAIR REQUIRED COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF STEERING COLUMN AND WIRING HARNESS (PARTS COST WAS OVER $1,100.00). DEALER STATED THIS IS BECOMING A COMMON REPAIR FOR THE ELANTRA LINE OF VEHICLES, BUT THIS WAS THE FIRST THEY SAW IN A TOURING MODEL. DUE TO COMMONALITY OF PARTS IN COMPARISON TO THE PERCENTAGE OF TOURING MODELS PRODUCED IT APPEARS THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE DESIGN OF THE STEERING COLUMN AND WIRING HARNESS FOR ALL ELANTRA MODELS. *TR
I HAVE BOUGHT A NEW 2010 HYUNDAI ELANTRA IN AUGUST OF 2010. ONE MORNING I WAS HEADED TO WORK WHICH WAS THIS YEAR, MARCH 2013; I CRANKED MY CAR AND ON THE DASHBOARD IN RED WAS THE ESC LIGHT ON. I COULD NOT TURN THE STEERING TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT AS IF IT WAS LOCKED. I WAS UNABLE TO GO GO TO WORK AND WAS REALLY FRUSTRATED. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS ESC PROBLEM WITH HYUNDAI AND THERE HAVE BEEN MANY REPORTING WITH THIS PROBLEM, SO I CALLED SERRA HYUNDAI WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM. I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED THERE AND I WAS ABOUT OF A VEHICLE FOR ONE DAY. *TR
DOOR HANDLE COATING CRACKED AND I CONSTANTLY AM CUTTING MY HAND ON IT. THE VEHICLE IS ONLY A 2010 AND TO HAVE THOSE DEFECTS IS RIDICULOUS!! *TR
MY VEHICLE PREVIOUSLY FAILED A STATE SAFETY INSPECTION FOR FAILED BRAKE LIGHTS JUST SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE (OCTOBER 2010). JUST PRIOR TO THIS FAILED INSPECTION, I'D NOTICED THAT THE "ESC OFF" LIGHT ON THE DASH WOULD TURN ON UNEXPECTEDLY. MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP REPAIRED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, WHICH ALSO REMEDIED THE "ESC OFF" LIGHT ISSUE. JUST OVER A MONTH AGO, THE "ESC OFF" LIGHT ON THE DASH AGAIN BEGAN TO TURN ON WITHOUT REASON. A FEW DAYS AGO, WHILE MERGING ONTO AN INTERSTATE NEAR MY HOME, A VEHICLE BEHIND MINE BARELY AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT WITH ME WHEN I HAD TO SUDDENLY SLOW TO MAKE A MERGE. THE DRIVER KINDLY ALERTED ME THAT HE DID NOT NOTICE ANY BRAKE LIGHTS WHEN I SUDDENLY STOPPED. SO, IT SEEMS AS IF I AM AGAIN GOING TO HAVE TO HAVE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN A KNOWN PROBLEM IN A NUMBER OF HYUNDAI VEHICLES, REPAIRED. *TR
AFTER A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, POWER STEERING AND STABILITY CONTROL NO LONGER FUNCTIONED. DEALER SAID A COMPUTER UPDATE WOULD LIKELY FIX THE PROBLEM. IT DID NOT. THEY SAID ONLY SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN. PART ALONE IS $2200. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE WOULD LUNGE FORWARD WHENEVER SHIFTING GEARS. THE CAR REVVING WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL IS ON AND PUSHING ON THE BREAKS THEN NOT BEING ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE OR PARK. I HAD TO USE THE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE TO JUST BE ABLE TO GET IT INTO PARK AFTER THAT. *TR
2010 HYUNDAI ELANTRA TOURING. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO LOUD CLUNKING SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR AREA OF THE VEHICLE. *SMD THE DEALER STATED, DESPITE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO EXAMINE THE VEHICLE ON THE LIFT AND SEVERAL TEST DRIVES, THE MECHANICS WERE UNABLE TO PINPOINT OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM.
THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL NOT STAY ON. I'M NOT SURE WHY BUT IT DOESN'T WORK. THIS CAN SEEMS TO HAVE AS MANY ELECTRICAL ISSUES AS SOME OF THE WORST CARS I HAVE SEEN! ESC AND OTHER ISSUES ARE ENOUGH THAT I DON'T WANT ANOTHER HYUNDAI. *TR
VEHICLE SHAKES AND RATTLES INSIDE AT 35-40 MPH,ALSO DECREASED ACCELERATION! NOISY, UNCOMFORTABLE AND EMBARRASSING. *TR
WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR ON THE 23 OF FEBRUARY THE SALESMAN ASSURED ME NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THIS CAR HAD ONLY HAD ONE OWNER NOTICED THAT IN THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR THERE WERE WATER RINGS AND A MOLD SUBSTANCE SALESMAN ASSURED IT WAS NOT MOLD TOOK IT BACK 2 DAYS LATER THEY REPLACED STRUTS AND AGAIN VOICED MY CONCERN ABOUT MOLD WAS ASSURED AGAIN IT WAS NOT TOOK IT BACK ON 13 OF MARCH THE OWNER CALLED AND ADVISED ME TO PICK UP CAR STATED THEY HAD SOME ONE COME OUT AND INSPECT THE CAR AND THEY DETERMINED IT WAS NOT MOLD WHEN ASK FOR A COPY OF DOCUMENT WAS TOLD INSPECTOR REFUSED TO LEAVE ONE. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO FIRESTONE AUTO FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN FOUND THAT WHEN HE APPLIED THE BRAKES THEY PULSATED. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION HE FOUND THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE ROTORS ARE RUSTED AND PITTED. THE REAR ROTORS ARE WORST THAN THE FRONT. HE ALSO NOTED THAT THE REAR BRAKE SHOES ARE WORN OUT AND NEED REPLACED. NORMALLY THE FRONT PADS ARE REPLACED TWICE TO ONCE IN THE REAR. MY GUESS IS THAT THE ROTORS CAUSED THE REAR PADS TO WEAR OUT PREMATURELY. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND THEY SAID THAT THE ROTORS ARE WARRANTED FOR 5 YEARS / 60,000 MILES BUT ONLY MANUFACTURED DEFECTS ARE COVERED. THEY SAID THAT RUSTING AND PITTING FROM WEATHER CONDITIONS IS NOT COVERED. SHOULD I HAVE KEPT THEM OILED SO THEY DIDN'T RUST? I HAVE A 2006 KIA WITH OVER 113,000 MILES ON IT AND THE ROTORS ARE STILL PERFECT WITH NO RUST OR CORROSION. BOTH VEHICLES HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THE SAME DRIVING AND WEATHER CONDITIONS. HAD I NOT PAINT FOR THE VEHICLE INSPECTION AND BEEN TOLD THAT THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS WERE BAD. I COULD HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO BRAKE FAILURE OR POSSIBLY ONE OF THEM HANGING UP AND CAUSING A SPIN OUT CONDITION. *TR

THE HYUNDAI ELANTRA HAD ITS STEERING LOCK UP WHILE DRIVING AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED AS IT WAS ON AN APPROACH RAMP PREPARING TO MERGE ON TO WI STATE HIGHWAY 441 IN THE TOWN OF MENASHA, WI. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO GO INTO THE GUARDRAIL SINCE THE STEERING WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT NOON ON A CLEAR DAY ON DRY PAVEMENT. WITNESSES TO THE ACCIDENT INDICATED THAT THE STEERING DID NOT RESPOND BEFORE THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE GUARDRAIL. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE DRIVER OTHER THAN MINOR BRUISES. NO OTHER CAR WAS INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT.WE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI AFTER THE INCIDENT BUT THEY DID NOT COME OUT TO EXAMINE THE CAR UNTIL AFTER IT HAD BEEN REPAIRED. EARLIER THIS YEAR WE RECEIVED A NOTICE THAT THIS SAME STEERING DEFECT WAS COVERED BY THE RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AS PART OF THIS RECALL. HYUNDAI HAS CONTINUED TO DENY ANY FLAW THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS ACCIDENT.
I EXPERIENCED A CRASH WITH THIS VEHICLE WHEN THE STEERING FAILED (AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL NOTICE NHTSA CODE 15V100000). I COMMUNICATED THIS FAILURE TO HYUNDAI AT THE TIME THIS OCCURRED BUT THEY DENIED THAT THERE WAS ANY ISSUE WITH THE STEERING. HYUNDAI HAS SUBSEQUENTLY ACKNOWLEDGED THIS PROBLEM WITH A FORMAL RECALL NOTICE. THEIR FAILURE TO ADDRESS THIS WHEN NOTIFIED OF THIS PROBLEM IS AN EXAMPLE OF PRODUCT NEGLIGENCE.

I DID CONTACT HYUNDAI AND SENT THEM AUTHORIZATION TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER AFTER READING ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL, AND THE PROBLEMS OF OTHER DRIVERS HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH THE COMPONENT, I DECIDED TO CONTACT YOUR OFFICE.
