NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Had oil changed at Take 5 recently as always do. 2 weeks later car cut off 3 times in traffic. Engine light came on. Car started to lose power/acceleration and engine began to make a ticking/knocking sound. I checked the oil and none was in it. I added 4 quarts to see would that help. It did not.
There is a clunking and or clicking noise when I turn the steering wheel in any direction. This issue caused my car to fail inspection last Thursday. I’m told by the Southern Team dealership advisor, [XXX] , that my 2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring is oit of warranty and it will cost between $400-$500 to fix this. I never received a letter since I purchased this car in 2015. I don’t recall the approximate date when this started, but it’s been going on for aboit a year at the least. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, she heard an abnormal sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving to her destination. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing a piston to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 123,500.
The air bag light on the dashboard came on and has stayed on. I got into my car in the morning as I do everyday, and the air bag light came on. The light goes out when I turn off the ignition. But the light stays on while the car is running and while I'm driving the car. This has been a problem for over a week. I haven't been involved in any accidents or incidents that led to the light coming on. And I haven't had any work done to the car that would cause this problem. I'm worried that the air bags won't deploy if I was involved in an accident. I see others all over the internet that have been having the same issue. The cost is prohibitive to have it checked and fixed. A recall should be issued. There's no reason that the air bag light should just come on and stay on. I would like Hyundai to cover the cost of checking and fixing this safety issue.
Gracias anticipadas
The rear suspension crossmember fractured allowing the lower suspension arm to move causing the wheel to move out at the bottom by a considerable amount. I noticed it after a short local trip. I think if I had continued driving the lower arm may have completely disconnected resulting in potential loss of control. The crossmember has significant corrosion in this area but the component should be thick enough to allow for this. The car is at my home address therefore has not been inspected by a dealer. I have contacted them and the manufacturer and neither offer any help.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering coupler needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle had not yet been taken to an independent mechanic or local dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 102,700.
I have been forced to park my car outside in case it catches on fire due to the faulty brake system that cannot be fixed. This puts my car in danger of vandalism and harsh winter conditions. This is unacceptable that Hyundai has not yet found a way to fix the dangerous brake system!!
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated upon driving from a complete stop, the steering wheel emitted abnormal squeaking sounds. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure had worsened and the steering wheel would shudder significantly while driving over bumps in the roadway. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled for diagnostic test. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
My car caught on fire in the parking lot of a business while I was inside of the business. The car was not started and just parked. The abs light was on since I bought the car and I had not had it looked at. I had no clue of the recall until today when this happened. The fire started under the hood somewhere. The fire department put the fire out and nothing other than that has been done. I will have a report in a few days.
Steering wheel clunking noise, the car tries to change direction by itself especially on wet roads, and I always trying to keep it in the same lane, the problem has been reproduced 2 weeks ago, there’s no warning lamps actually either before, I had not inspected this problem.
Spring coil on strut broke off on passengers side of car. Sliced tired while driving. A couple years after getting that side repaired same exact thing happened on the driver's side.
The contact owned a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V393000 (Equipment) and requested to be removed from the recall distribution list because she no longer owns the vehicle. The local dealer was contacted and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was not contacted.
The front subframe / crossmember has prematurely corroded at suspension mounting points. The control arm mount has rusted completely through resulting in the bottom half of the control arm mount becoming unstable and the control arm is at risk of full detachment.
My daughter was driving my 2011 Hyundai Elantra and she got a flat tire on the drivers side front. Upon inspection, I discovered that the front strut spring had fractured and part of it went through the sidewall of the tire. Found out that there is a recall for this exact problem for certain 2011 Elantras. Called the Hyundai customer service line and was told that this particular Elantra was not part of the recall. Why not? The recall is to replace springs that, because of corrosion caused by road salt used in winter in certain states (my state NJ being one of the states affected), fracture and puncture the tires. This is EXACTLY what happened to this vehicle. I am working on getting Hyundai to make repairs but I don't have much hope.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated during acceleration with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics who diagnosed that the engine and battery needed to be replaced. The dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced at the dealer for an engine failure and after retrieving the vehicle the check engine light would remain illuminated while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that the engine was again faulty and needed additional repairs. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 109,000.
ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE, EVEN AFTER ENGINE REPLACEMENT BY CAR REPAIR SHOP, ENGINE TICKS AGAIN. ALL 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA'S ENGINE TICKS UNNATURALLY.
Driving on wet roads with all of the play in steering is dangerous, I almost lost control. There is a clunking noise in steering and it is loose.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the airbag warning light was illuminated. The contact called the local dealer who informed the contact about diagnostic testing. The contact declined the diagnostic fees. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
Brake pedal stopper deterioration. The brake pedal stopper pad deteriorates, allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. If the brake light switch plunger does not retract as it should when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brake lights stay illuminated, preventing accurate communication to following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, then the transmission can be shifted out of "park" without depressing the brake pedal. Consequently, the risk of a crash increases with either condition. This is an issue Hyundai has had to recall other models/years for! This issue drained my battery completely and I had to pay $60 out of pocket to figure out what was going on. The brake pedal stopper pad is just $1.80 USD at the dealership. Hub Hyundai wanted to charge me $80 initially to install it, when they DID NOT report this problem to me when they "inspected" my car on 08-10-21, I took it to them because of another recall on my vehicle. They supposedly "inspected" my car and gave me a list of repairs "needed" which didn't include this issue. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure occurred. This happened on 08-27-21. It was my neighbor who told me the lights on my car were on all night! I usually don't go out at night, no way to notice they were not turning off. No wonder why my battery got drained!
The airbag light goes on and off intermittently. I've not had any accidents or anything so I'm not sure why it's doing this. A lot of people are complaining about the same problem on blogs on the internet. I think this should be a recall and be fixed for free.
My steering is lose and makes a popping sound. I was making a left turn and almost hit a car because I did not have full control of my steering wheel. It feels like its lose. July 19, 2021 On Thursday the 22 of July 2021 I had a mechanic come out to check it. He told me it was the Steering Coupling, he also said that there was a recall on that. So I called the Dealership they told me I had just missed it by three months. They want to charge me $500. hundred dollars. I don't have that kind of money. I need to go back to work and I need my car. This is a hardship please help me.
The engine stopped while driving 60MPH on the highway. All dash symbol lights lit up, the brakes did not work, there was no power, the emergency brake did not work, the hazard lights did not work, loss of steering capabilities and I used the grass and rough roadside to stop the vehicle. Avoiding any accidents.
Steering wheel is making a noise (rubbing- popping) when steering wheel is turned. Took it in to have it looked was informed that the ESC SYSTEM needed to be repaired and that this is a known issue with Hyundai on the Elantra and other models.
The steering column clicks and pops when you turn wheel. Upon research. I have found this is an issue Hyundai knows about. Has an upgraded replacement part for. But refuses to recall.
On 8/14/2021 I entered NHTSA complaint number 11429117. This was in regard to a fractured front coil spring in my 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Although there was a current recall (number 15V629000) on this issue, I was advised that my VIN did not qualify. Apparently the reasoning was that my car was built in a different location in Alabama. I contested this with appropriate documention that clearly showed the broken pieces with corrosion. I ended up suffering the cost of replacement of both strut assemblies. As I had to go to an independent shop for my service I sent and escalated my issue through Hyundai to no avail. So now it's March 2023, and I receive a recall (excuse me, campaign - 984) to have an underbody cavity wax and anti corrosion spray applied to prevent corrosion of components due to road salt. So, as I attempted to pont out to Hyundain in 2021, my car and perhaps many others were at risk for these potentially fatal failures. Fortunately my spring broke as I entered my garage. others may not have been so lucky. A break at high speed could take out a tire and that's the ball game. Continuing with the metaphor, Hyundai dropped the ball big time on this.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while operating the vehicle, the rear brake lights failed to illuminate while depressing the brake pedal. Upon inspection, it was discovered that all three brake lights were inoperable. The contact replaced the bulbs and the pedal switch however, the failure persisted. In addition, the traction control warning light remains illuminated while operating the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 118,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated he received an unknown recall notification for the steering wheel failure; however, the dealer inspected the vehicle and informed the contact that the recall repair did not need to be completed on the vehicle. The contact stated the steering wheel became significantly loosened while driving at various speeds and upon starting the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that he would be responsible for the cost of the diagnosis and repair of the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
THE BATTERY WON'T CHARGE AND CAUSING THE REMOTES TO KEEP GOING OUT AND I'M UNABLE TO START MY CAR WITH THE PUSH START REMOTE. THE BATTERY AND REMOTES WERE JUST REPLACED IN NOVEMBER 2020 & IT IS NOW GIVING ME THE SAME ISSUES AGAIN. I CAME BACK TO START MY PARKED CAR & IT WON'T START.
THE REAR BRAKE LIGHTS KEEP BLOWING OUT EVERY MONTH! SINCE THERE'S NO INDICATIONS ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THAT MY REAR BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OUT, THE POLICE AND FELLOW DRIVERS ARE THE ONES TO TELL ME THE LIGHTS ARE OUT. NOT SAFE WHEN BOTH BRAKE LIGHTS ARE OUT!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REVERSING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE STRUT SPRING FRACTURED AND PUNCTURED THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRONT STRUT RODS WERE DAMAGED AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 240,000.
WHILE DRIVING MY HUSBAND HEARD A LOUD POP. IMMEDIATELY THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WENT FLAT WHICH CAUSED SEVERE LOSS OF CONTROL. THANKFULLY HE WAS ON A LOCAL ROAD WITH NO OTHER CARS AT THE TIME. APPARENTLY A COIL SPRING FRACTURED OFF AND SLASHED THE TIRE. THIS SPRING STILL LOOKED BRAND NEW YET IT JUST SHEERED OFF WHICH MUST BE SOME TYPE OF DEFECT IN MANUFACTURING OF THE PART. WHILE RESEARCHING THIS I FOUND A RECALL #107096 FOR SUSPENSION FRONT SPRING COIL YET MY 2011 ELANTRA DOES NOT SHOW UP FOR THIS RECALL? THIS DEFECT IN THE SPRING COIL COULD HAVE CAUSED CATASTROPHIC EFFECTS IF WE WERE DRIVING FASTER ON HIGHWAY. I HAVEN'T YET BEEN ABLE TO CONTACT HYUNDAI IN REGARDS TO THIS YET BUT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE....THIS DEFECT WHICH COULD BE DEADLY DEPENDING ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES. I NOW HAVE TO PAY $1000 TO REPAIR THE STRUTS AND COILS ON BOTH SIDES. I'M NOT SURE WHY HYUNDAI HAS NOT RECALLED ALL CARS, BUT THIS MUST BE ADDRESSED FOR SAFETY.
I HAVE ALREADY REPORTED MY PROBLEM REGARDING THE RECALL #107096 FOR SUSPENSION FRONT SPRING COIL. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 15V629000; DATE: OCT. 7, 2015 IF A FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURES, IT MAY CONTACT THE TIRE, POSSIBLY PUNCTURING IT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH...AND WANTED TO UPDATE SINCE I HAVE SINCE CONTACTED HYUNDAI. THIS WAS THEIR REPLY: CAMPAIGNS AND RECALLS ARE VIN SPECIFIC, THEREFORE, YOUR 2011 ELANTRA MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED IN THE SAME TIME PERIOD AS THE AFFECTED VEHICLES BUT AT A DIFFERENT FACTORY. NOT ALL ELANTRA'S FOR THIS TIME PERIOD WERE RECALLED. ONLY THE AFFECTED VIN'S. MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED DURING THE AFFECTED DATES, BUT THEY ARE APPARENTLY ONLY VIN SPECIFIC. MY CONCERN IS THAT I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE COIL SPRING FRACTURED...IF OTHERS OUTSIDE THE VIN SPECIFIC ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM MAYBE THEY NEED TO EXPAND THE RECALL FOR THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY PROBLEMS AND WOULD LIKE TO WARN OTHERS TO GET THIS CHECKED EVEN THOUGH HYUNDAI WILL NOT COVER THE PROBLEM.

The 2011 Hyundai Elantra false starts. I’ve changed the battery and gotten a tune up. I’ve taken it into the dealership and paid for a diagnostic, even the Hyundai dealership says they cannot explain why the car is false starting. I believe it is my engine. But why isn’t my car Included in the engine recall?

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE TRUNK AND FROM THE DOOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. SHE OPENED THE DOOR, THE AREA FROM HER DASHBOARD ALL THE WAY DOWN TO HER GEARS WAS BURNED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THE POLICE ARRIVED AND BOTH FILED REPORTS. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT LET THE VEHICLE SMOKE OUT AND DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. THE VEHICLE HAD A RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V393000 (EQUIPMENT) FOR THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE 12 VOLT ACCESSORY SOCKET LOCATED INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS CURRENTLY STILL AWAITING TO BE TOWED AWAY BY THE MANUFACTURER TO EMAIL A LETTER FOR THE CLAIM TO THE CONTACT. THE DEALER SMART HYUNDAI (1 SMART DRIVE, WHITE HALL, AR 71602 (870) 534-8122) TOLD THE CONTACT TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,000.
DURING THE PAST THREE YEARS I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL OF THE BRAKE LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS LIGHTS, DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS AT LEAST EVERY THREE MONTHS AND WHEN REMOVING THE BULBS THEY ARE HARD TO GET OUT AND THE CONNECTOR IS MELTED AND BURNT. THE TURN SIGNALS WILL SHORT OUT AND THEN WORK AGAIN REGULARLY WHILE IN MOTION AND STATIONARY.
MY DAILY DRIVER BEGAN TO MAKE A KNOCKING NOISE AND MY DASHBOARD BREAK LIGHT INDICATOR CAME ON. I IMMEDIATELY SCHEDULED SERVICE WITH MY HYUNDAI DEALER. BUT IT DID NOT MAKE THE (2) DAYS WAIT. WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE FRONT END BEGAN TO INTERMITTENTLY PULL TO THE RIGHT AS IF THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE WAS BEING TAPPED INDEPENDENTLY. WITHIN MINUTES ALL OF THE ELECTRICAL SHUT OFF AND THE ENGINE STALLED. I DRIFTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS THE ELECTRICAL DID COME BACK ON BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO CLOSEST HYUNDAI DEALER, WHO SAID THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND ALL THAT WAS AVAILABLE WAS A USED ENGINE WITH 60,000 MILES ON IT AT AN APPROXIMATE COST OF 5,000.00 DOLLARS WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT IT MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL REPAIRS.
THERE WAS NO MAJOR OR MINOR INCIDENT THAT WOULD INDICATE AN ISSUE WITH THE AIRBAGS. AT ABOUT 07/10/20 I BEGAN TO NOTICE MY AIRBAG SERVICE LIGHT WOULD LIGHT UP AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES OF DRIVING INDICATING THE DRIVER SEAT AIRBAG WOULD BE INOPERABLE; HOWEVER, THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT THAT TYPICALLY IS LIT "OFF" WOULD NOT BE LIT INDICATING THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WOULD BE CURRENTLY OPERATIONAL. IN ADDITION I NOTICED THAT WHEN I HAD A PASSENGER THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT ("OFF") WOULD NOT BE LIT AS DESIGNED AND MY DRIVER SEAT AIRBAG LIGHT WOULD NEVER TURN ON (INDICATING IT BEING NOT OPERATIONAL.) MOST RECENTLY, ON 07/25/20 I BEGAN TO NOTICE THAT THE DRIVER SEAT AIRBAG WOULD BE LIT FROM THE MOMENT I TURN ON THE ENGINE. IT REMAINS LIT FOR THE ENTIRETY OF THE DRIVE AND NOW THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG SEAT WILL TURN ON OR OFF SPONTANEOUSLY AND HAVING A PASSENGER NO LONGER HAS AN EFFECT ON THE DRIVER SEAT AIRBAG LIGHT.
My car stalls while in motion without warning. While driving the vehicle will randomly speed up and rpm will fly up without command. I also experience a lot of engine power loss randomly the vehicle will bog and be slow. Occasionally when I press on the accelerator I can almost go to the floor with no response from the vehicle. Speed acceleration response is delayed approximately 30 seconds occasionally. Uncommanded acceleration and random stalling when vehicle is in motion has been a big safety risk for me. This issue has been ongoing for awhile. This issue has occurred countless times so it’s very frequent. This complaint is in compliance with the current open investigation regarding the throttle control system vulnerabilities. NHTSA Action Number: DP21003
ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC, RUST ON MY COIL SPRING CAUSED IT TO FRACTURE WHILE DRIVING AND PUNCTURE MY TIRE. MY MECHANIC SAID IT WAS "CRAZY" BECAUSE THERE WAS A FRESH FRACTURE FROM IT "SNAPPING". I DID SOME RESEARCH AND IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE HYUNDAI RECALL #133. THIS RECALL INVOLVED RUSTING OF THE COIL SPRING TO 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRAS IN STATES THAT USE SALT FOR SNOW REMOVAL, SUCH AS MINNESOTA. I LIVE IN MN, SO I CALLED HYUNDAI TO SEE IF MY CAR WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT. I AM WONDERING IF IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONSIDERING THERE WERE KNOWN AND SIMILAR ISSUES WITH OTHER VEHICLES OF THE SAME YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL IN MINNESOTA. IT SHOULD BE NOTED, MY VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IN ANOTHER STATE (I THINK LOUISIANA OR MISSISSIPPI) AND WAS NOT BROUGHT UP TO MINNESOTA UNTIL 2013. AFTER WHICH I PURCHASED IT.
THE LIGHT APPEARED WITH NO APPARENT CAUSE. WHEN IT INITIALLY CAME ON, MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING DOWN A MAIN ROAD. IT TURNS ON THEN WILL GO AWAY, ONLY TO TURN ON AGAIN. CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REQUESTED I COME IN FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AT $140, AND I WAS ASKED TO DROP THE VEHICLE OFF. ALSO, THIS WOULD ONLY BE FOR THE TEST AND I WOULD BE CHARGED TO FIX THE PROBLEM ONCE DISCOVERED. THIS IS INCONVENIENT AS I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN AND ONLY ONE VEHICLE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY I AM BEING CHARGED FOR SOMETHING THAT IS A SAFETY ISSUE, ESPECIALLY WHEN I HAVE NO ACCIDENTS.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD GOING 55 MPH AND MY AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I DIDN'T HIT ANY LARGE BUMPS. IT COMES ON FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN TURNS OFF. *TR
