TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A GRINDING NOISE AND THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS LOCKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SLIDE PLATE AND BRAKE PADS FROZE AND REMAINED ON THE ROTORS, AS A RESULT. THE DEALER HAD TO REPLACE THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 37,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 37,200. JUST BOUGHT USED FROM LUTHER HYUNDAI BLOOMINGTON MN,WITH ADULT PASSENGER IN SEAT ,WEIGHT 110 LBS, THE AIR BAG WILL NOT TURN ON AIR BAG LIGHT SAYS AIR BAG OFF, DO NOT BUY A HYUNDAI IF YOU MAY HAVE A PASSENGER WHO WEIGHS LESS THAN 130 HYUNDAI SAYS ADULT PASSENGER HAS TO RIDE IN BACK SEAT .MANY ASIAN PEOPLE ARE NOT HEAVY ENOUGH TO MAKE AIR BAG WORK SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAFEST CAR , TO BAD REALLY NICE CAR WILL HAVE TO BRING BACK AND BUY A TOYOTA HIGHLANDER
I NOTICED THE VEHICLE MADE A CLINKING SOUND WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS; THE DEALER CLAIMED IT WAS A CD IN THE SIDE POCKET OF THE CAR. SECOND VISIT THEY CLAIMED TO INSPECT SUSPENSION AND FIND NOTHING WRONG. THIRD VISIT THEY REINSPECTED SUSPENSION AND REPLACED ONE PIECE OF DRIVER SIDE SUSPENSION, FOURTH VISIT THEY INSPECTED AND REPLACED ANOTHER PIECE OF DRIVER SIDE SUSPENSION, FIFTH VISIT THEY REALIGNED AND DID A WHEEL BALANCE (WHICH SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED WITH REPAIRS 3 AND 4). SIXTH VISIT THEY CLAIMED THEY COULD NOT HEAR THE CLUNK ANYMORE, I AM GOING INTO THE SEVENTH VISIT WITH THE CAR STILL CLUNKING AND NOW THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT TURNS ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY IN EVERYDAY TRAFFIC UNDER DRY CONDITIONS AT 20 MPH. EACH VISIT THEY TELL ME THEY WILL REPAIR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY BE CAUSED BY A FAILURE OF A PART - YEAH RIGHT! IN A POOR ECONOMY THEY WOULD RATHER I SMASH MY CAR THAN HAVE IT FOR YEARS (I ONLY HAVE 58000 MILES ON A 2007 VEHICLE). *TR
DRIVING 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE ON HIGHWAY SUDDENLY THE SUN VISOR DROPS INTO MY FACE FROM ITS CORNER ATTACHMENT, DANGLING BY ONLY ELECTRICAL WIRE. GRABBED SUN VISOR AND LIFTED UP, PREVENTING POTENTIAL ACCIDENT WITH OTHER VEHICLES. HYUNDAI SERVICE DEALERSHIP REFUSED FREE REPLACEMENT DUE TO BEING OUT OF WARRANTY. GAVE ESTIMATE $150 TO REPLACE. THERE ARE DOZENS OF SAME DEFECT ONLINE WITH 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR DROPPING FROM EXACT SAME LOCATION. BECAUSE IT IS VERY DANGEROUS NOT TO FIX WE HAD TO PAY FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR FAMILY ONBOARD. HYUNDAI STILL REFUSING TO DO RECALL. THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) ON MY 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SE SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. IT CANNOT BE FORCED BACK ON MY EITHER PUSHING THE ON/OFF SWITCH OR STOPPING THE CAR, SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE, AND RESTARTING. THIS HAS HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY SIX TIMES OVER THE LAST YEAR. THE PROBLEM WAS FIRST NOTICED WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES ON IT AND IS NOW HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY AT 46000 MILES. THE DEALER CANNOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE. *TR

FUEL SENSOR PROBLEMS, FUEL LIGHT ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, BOTH GO OUT WHEN TANK IS ABOUT (I WOULD ESTIMATE) 7/8 TO ABOUT 1/2 A TANK BUT ARE ON AT FULL AND I'M GUESSING 7/16 AND BELOW. I CAN PRETTY MUCH ESTIMATE MY MILEAGE BUT WITH 2 CHILDREN ABOUT TO GET THEIR LICENSE I FEEL THIS WOULD BE HAZARDOUS IF NOT DANGEROUS SHOULD THEY RUN OUT OF GAS ON A PARKWAY OR EXPRESSWAY. WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS IT SHOULD BE RATED AS A RECALL AND FIXED. SEEMS TO ME THAT IT OCCURS ONCE THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY EXPIRES AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY.

LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT AND FOG LIGHT FAILURE HAPPENING OVER AND OVER AGAIN. LOW BEAM LIGHTS HAVE FAILED 7 TIMES IN THE PAST 8 MONTHS. FOG LIGHTS HAVE FAILED 4 TIMES IN THE LAST 8 MONTHS. BULBS CONTINUE TO BLOW AFTER REPEATED REPLACEMENTS BY TECHNICIAN AND OWNER. *TR
FUEL SENDING UNIT. I HAD IT REPLACED IN DECEMBER 2011. HAVING PROBLEMS WITH GAS SMELL IN CABIN OF SUV. HALL HYUNDAI OF NEWPORT NEW ON JEFFERSON AVE. PUT THE UNIT IT. SINCE THE UNIT WAS INSTALL I HAVE SMELL GASOLINE. TOOK IT IN TO HALL HYUNDAI IF NEWPORT NEWS ON SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2012 AND THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT SMELL ANYTHING. I EXPLAIN TO THEM IF, IT IS FULL YOU GET A STRONG ODOR OF GAS. IF IT IS AT HALF TANK, NO SMELL. SO I WAS ADVISED TO BRING IT IN AT HALF TANK. NOTHING WAS RESOLVED. STILL SMELLING GAS. TOOK VEHICLE OVER TO HALL HYUNDAI OF CHESAPEAKE APRIL 7TH, 2018. I FILLED THE TANK UP SO THE ORDER COULD BE SMELL AND IT WAS NOTICED. THEY STATED THAT THEY TOOK OUT THE BACK SEAT AND TOOK THE UNIT OUT AND PUT IT BACK IN AND TIGHTENED IT. THEY SAY THE CLEANED THE CARPET AND IONIZED IT. I WAS THERE FROM 9:40 A.M. UNTIL 4:20 P.M. WHEN I GOT INTO THE SUV A STRONG ODOR OF CLEANING SOLUTION WAS PRESENT. IT IS NOW MONDAY, APRIL 9TH 2012 AND THE PRESENT OF THE SMELL OF GAS IT STILL THERE. I AM SO TIRED OF DRIVING AND GETTING HEADACHES. ALL I WANT IT THE SUV REPAIR. OUR 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE KEEPS HAVING BRAKE PROBLEMS - SEIZING, UNEVEN WEAR OF PADS, ETC. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACES THE PADS WHICH CONTINUE TO WEAR OUT OR WEAR VERY UNEVENLY EVERY FEW THOUSAND MILES (APPROX 5,000). OUR UNDERSTANDING FROM AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WE HIRED IS THAT THE CALIPERS AND THE SLIDER BRACKETS ARE POORLY MACHINED (EDMONDS ALSO REPORTS THE SAME PROBLEMS); THESE ARE THE REAL REASON THE BRAKE PADS WEAR UNEVENLY AND CONSTANTLY NEEDING REPLACING EVERY FEW THOUSAND MILES. WHILE MY CAR WAS OFF AND PARKED IN MY GARAGE (WITH NO KEYS IN IGNITION), MY 6 YEAR OLD SON WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT FROM "PARK" TO "NEUTRAL/DRIVE". HE LATER SHOWED ME HOW HE USED "BOTH HIS HANDS AND PULLED REALLY HARD." MY CAR ROLLED OUT OF THE GARAGE, CROSSED THE BUSY STREET AND INTO THE NEIGHBORS DRIVE WAY (WITH MY SON IN IT!!!!!!). IT THEN STARTED TO ROLL FORWARD TOWARDS ME AND THE STREET ....UNTIL I COULD OPEN THE DOOR AND SLAM MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK AS THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE CONTACT PUMPED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL UNTIL IT RELEASED AND THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION 2007 SANTA FE HYUNDAI - 2ND TIME AROUND..THIS TIME ON A PRIVATE ROAD CAR ENGINE REVVED UP , ALL BRAKE SYSTEMS FAILED, COULD NOT SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL - MECHANISM WOULD NOT MOVE, HAD TO HOLD ON THE STIRRING WHEEL AND RIDE IT OUT.; SAW MAIN THOROUGHFARE COMING UP SWERVED INTO GAS STATION; SAW WALL HAD THOUGHT TO SWERVE INTO STREET; WOULD HAVE TOPPLED VEHICLE SAW SMALL PARK WENT ACROSS THOROUGHFARE UNTO PARK AREA; UNDERSTOOD CAR WAS AIRBORNE AND WHEN IT HIT THE GROUND WENT ON TWO WHEELS ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE AND THEN CAME DOWN UNTO THE 4; STIRRED STRAIT INTO CLEARING BETWEEN TREES; SAMPLING AND DIRT STOPPED VEHICLE. 1 PASSENGER CONTESTS HE HAS SLIGHT FRACTURE ON SKULL; THE NEAR FATALITY MIGHT HAVE BEEN TO A PLAUSIBLE NUMBER OF CHILDREN, PARENTS, ADULTS , CARS AND TRACTOR TRAILERS ON MAIN ROAD. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN . THE AFTER RESULT IS THE NERVOUSNESS THAT RIDES IN ONE'S SOUL WHEN ON THE ROAD. HAD OVER 20 WITNESSES TO THIS EVENT. THIS IS AN ONGOING EPIDEMIC,MY CASE HAS BEEN IGNORED AND OTHER CASES HAVE BEEN IGNORED ISN'T IT TIME THAT THIS IS REVIEWED BEFORE REAL FATALITIES BECOME ACTUALIZATION. THANK YOU. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, I OPENED MY SUN VISOR AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE, THEN SUDDENLY IT DROPPED DOWN INTO MY LINE OF SIGHT JUST DANGLING BY SOME WIRES! I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED! AFTER TRYING TO PUSH IT BACK UP INTO THE HOLE, TO ONLY HAVE IT FALL DOWN IN MY FACE AGAIN AT ANY GIVEN TIME, I HAD TO JUST REMOVE IT COMPLETELY! I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE THE CHEAP PARTS USED ON THESE VISORS, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SAFETY HAZARD, AND THE LACK OF ACTION TAKEN TO FIX THIS! I WILL NEVER BUY A HYUNDAI AGAIN IF THIS IS THE SERVICE I AM GOING TO RECEIVE.
I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM HYUNDAI CONCERNING THE AIRBAGS IN THE VEHICLE. I REALIZED THAT MY AIRBAG LIGHT ON MY DASH HAD BEEN ON FOR A LONG TIME, PERHAPS A YEAR OR TWO, BUT I THOUGHT THAT WAS NORMAL AND DIDN'T REALIZE IT MEANT IT DIDN'T WORK. I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY PERFORMED THE REPAIR RELATED TO THE RECALL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE REPAIR DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AS THE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS STILL ON. I AGREED TO PAY THE DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE SO THE DEALER COULD FIND THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER SAYS THERE IS A SHORT IN THE WIRING HARNESS THAT IS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WHICH WOULD COST $1500 TO FIX. THEY SAID THE SRS COMPUTER AND AIRBAG SENSOR MAY ALSO NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR A COST OF $600 AND $400 RESPECTIVELY. *TR

TALKED TO HYUNDAI SERVICE DEALERSHIP; THEY REFUSED FREE REPLACEMENT DUE TO BEING OUT OF WARRANTY. GAVE ESTIMATE $185 PLUS TO REPLACE. ONLINE COMPLAINT WEBSITES DETAIL DOZENS OF SAME DEFECT WITH 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR DROPPING FROM EXACT SAME LOCATION, AND DEALERS ADMITTING FACTORY USE OF CHEAP PLASTIC ASSEMBLY AS CAUSE. WE CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORPORATE IN FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA. THEY REFUSED TO INITIATE DEFECTIVE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR RECALL. SAID THEY NEEDED MORE COMPLAINTS TO JUSTIFY RECALL. TOLD THEM IT'S BEEN 4 YEARS, AND THERE ARE ALREADY DOZENS OF COMPLAINTS. ADVISED THEM IT'S VERY DANGEROUS NOT TO DO RECALL. SERIOUS LIABILITY ISSUES. THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN-VISOR BROKE AT THE PLASTIC HINGE WHERE IT GOES INTO THE CEILING OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING THE SUN VISOR TO DROP DOWN AND OBSCURE MY VIEW OF THE ROAD. THIS CREATED A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH I COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING. EVEN IN THE CLOSED AND STOWED POSITION, THE SUN VISOR PERIODICALLY DROPS DOWN OBSCURING MY DRIVING VIEW. THIS IS QUITE DANGEROUS IN THAT I CANNOT SEE THE ROAD FOR A FEW SECONDS AND AM DISTRACTED WHILE RE-STOWING THE VISOR.

THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED, CAUSING HER BRAKE LIGHTS TO MALFUNCTION WHEN THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED SIMILAR TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V122000 ( SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC SWITCHES:BRAKE LIGHT). THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT HER VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER NOR WAS THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 87,843. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 87,800. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
WE WERE TRAVELING NORTH ON ROUTE 27 NEAR OXFORD, OHIO IN OUR 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE. WHILE PASSING A SLOW MOVING TRUCK, I REALIZED THAT THE CAR WAS ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN AND WE WENT FROM 40 MPH TO OVER 90 MPH IN SECONDS. (THE CAR'S HIGH SPEED WAS RECORDED BY OUR GARMIN GPS). I PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKES AND FELT THE BRAKES BEING APPLIED, BUT THE ENGINE WAS STILL RACING AT FULL THROTTLE. I PRESSED VERY HARD ON THE BRAKES AGAIN, BUT THE CAR ONLY SLOWED DOWN A LITTLE. I PUSHED THE CRUISE CONTROL ON AND THEN OFF HOPING THE CAR WOULD STOP ACCELERATING. THAT DID NOT HELP. I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN SHIFT MODE AND TRIED TO DOWNSHIFT SO THAT I COULD SLOW DOWN THE CAR, BUT THAT ONLY MADE THE ENGINE RACE EVEN FASTER. I FINALLY PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, TURNED THE IGNITION KEY OFF AND APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE CAR. WE PULLED OVER ONTO THE GRASS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS ALL HAPPENED IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. WE WAITED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND IT SEEMED FINE. THE ENGINE WAS IDLING AT A NORMAL RATE AND THERE WERE NO ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS. WE CONTINUED OUR TRIP CAUTIOUSLY, MAINTAINING A DISTANCE FROM THE CARS AHEAD AND MOST OF THE TIME KEPT A HAND ON THE SHIFT, SO THAT THE CAR COULD QUICKLY BE PUT IN NEUTRAL AGAIN. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER ON MONDAY. THEY RAN VARIOUS TESTS BUT REPORTED THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT IT WAS UNACCEPTABLE. WE WERE SURE THERE WAS A SERIOUS DEFECT WITH THE CAR. HE THEN CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS AND THEY PROPOSED KEEPING THE CAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS SO THAT THEY COULD ROAD TEST THE CAR WITH DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS ATTACHED. WE WERE CONCERNED ALLOWING THEM TO DRIVE THE CAR AND DECIDED TO SELL IT BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER COULD THEN RUN WHATEVER TESTS THEY NEEDED TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10E038000 (VISIBILITY:SUN ROOF ASSEMBLY) AND HAD BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTURER IN REGARDS TO A RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT THE PART NEEDED FOR REPAIRS WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND ON BACKORDER. THE SUN ROOF COULD NOT BE USED WITHOUT THE CLIP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000.
LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHEN TURNING. VERY HARD TO TURN. AT ONE POINT IT TOOK MY HUSBAND TO HELP ME TURN THE STEERING WHEEL FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT. HAS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES FOR SERVICE FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO CORRECT PROBLEM OR FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. *TR
ACCIDENT INVOLVED SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND OWNERS SUSPECT ELECTRONIC DEFECT IN THE CAR. FORTUNATELY DESPITE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE STORE AND VEHICLE, NO ONE INJURED. OWNERS ARE WORKING WITH BOTH INSURER AND VEHICLE MANUFACTURER TO REQUEST APPROPRIATE INVESTIGATION. DRIVER'S STATEMENT: "I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SLOT AT LOCAL STORE. EVERYTHING WAS GOING NORMALLY. I APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND THE CAR RESPONDED AND SLOWED. BUT JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE ENGINE REVVED UP SOME AND THE CAR KEPT MOVING FORWARD. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES HARDER, BUT THE CAR MOVED FORWARD EVEN FASTER. I HAD NO TIME TO SLIP INTO NEUTRAL OR CUT THE ENGINE. I FINALLY LIFTED MY FOOT FOR SECOND AND STOMPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL HARD, BUT MOMENTUM CAUSED THE CAR TO JUMP THE CURB AND I SHATTERED A HUGE PLATE GLASS WINDOW IN THE FRONT OF THE STORE. THE CAR FINALLY CAME TO A STOP IN A HAIL OF GLASS SHARDS PARTIALLY INSIDE THE STORE, THE ENGINE STILL REVVING HIGHER THAN AT "IDLE" SPEED. I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. AND THAT'S WHAT I RECOLLECT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FEW SECONDS IT TOOK FOR THE CAR'S FAILURE TO STOP AND RUNNING THROUGH THE WINDOW.
AT THREE YEARS AND 63000 MILES ALL FOUR BRAKE ROTORS REQUIRE REPLACEMENT DUE TO WHAT THE DEALER DESCRIBES AS "NORMAL" WEAR. THERE IS NO SCORING ON ANY OF THE ROTORS IT IS OUT OF SPEC BECAUSE IT DOES NOT MEET MINIMUM THICKNESS REQUIREMENTS. IDENTIFIED THROUGH LOUD NOISE AND POOR BRAKING. *TR

LARGE AMOUNTS OF 'BRAKE DUST' ON RIM OF REAR DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL. BROUGHT VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION. DETERMINED CALIPER WAS SEIZED UP DUE TO RUST. THEY WILL NOT REMEDY VIA WARRANTY B/C THEY DETERMINE THAT IT IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE. (SALT/ROAD DEBRIS BUILDUP). NEW BRAKE PADS/ROTORS WERE DAMAGED AS A RESULT. THIS HAS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE RIM OF THE WHEEL GOT EXTREMELY HOT DURING USE. COULD THIS EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A TIRE BLOW OUT WHILE DRIVING? NOT SURE!? WHILE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM IS INTACT I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A CERTIFIED HYUNDAI REPAIR CENTER THAT THE CLOCK SPRING AND THE JUNCTION BOX HAVE FAILED. GIVEN THE PREMATURE NATURE OF THIS FAILURE I BELIEVE THAT THIS SYSTEM IS FLAWED AND REPRESENTS A WIDESPREAD HAZARD TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. I OWN A 2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SUV. THE SEAT BELT FOR THE PASSENGER REAR SEAT (40) DOES NOT STAY UP AND AVAILABLE TO NEW OCCUPANTS. IT ALWAYS FALLS DOWN THE SEAT BELT SLOT AND IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO RETRIEVE FOR THE PASSENGER. PASSENGER INVARIABLY SEAT THEMSELVES INTO 60 PORTION OF THE SEAT DIRECTLY BEHIND THE DRIVER. THE ONLY WAY WHICH I HAVE FOUND TO RETRIEVE THE SEAT BELT AND MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO THE PASSENGER IN THE 40 SEAT IS TO LAY THE SEAT DOWN AT ABOUT A 30 DEGREES. REACH UNDER THE SEAT VARY CAREFULLY AND PUSH THE SEAT BELT UP FROM THE BOTTOM. THIS IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND WITH THE BOLTS AND UNFINISHED METAL ON THE FLOOR POSES A SAFETY HAZARD IN ITSELF. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALER TWICE AND ASKED ABOUT REPAIR OR RECALL AND THEY JUST KIND OF LAUGH WHEN I TELL THEM ITS A PAIN AND NEEDS FIXED. THEY JUST SAY "YOU AND ALOT OF OTHERS WOULD LIKE THAT". IT WOULD TAKE A SIMPLE FIX OF PUTTING IN A STIFF COLLAR LIKE THAT ON MOST VEHICLES OR A FLAT SLEEVE WHICH COULD KEEP THE BELT FROM RECEDING INTO THE ABYSS OF THE VEHICLE. I WOULD IMAGINE THAT MOST PASSENGERS IN THE 40 POSITION DO WITHOUT WEARING THE BELT, AND JUST HOLD IT IN THE LAP. I INFORMED THEM AT THAT TIME THAT THE ECS OFF LIGHT HAD BEEN COMING ON TO WHICH THEY REPLIED IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE YAW SENSOR I CALLED THE WEEK OF JULY 4TH TO LET THE DEALER KNOW THAT THE ECS OFF LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN - THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR MANY SANTA FE'S AND THEY NEEDED ME TO COME DOWN (150+ MILES ONE WAY) TO HOOK IT UP TO SEE WHAT THE CODE TELLS THEM. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR FELL, AND BLOCKED THE VISION OF DRIVER. ALONG WITH BLOCKING THE DRIVER'S VISION, THE DRIVER WAS STARTLED CAUSING THE DRIVER TO SWERVE. THIS ALMOST CAUSED A CRASH. THE DRIVER HAD TO HOLD THE SUN VISOR UNTIL REACHING HOME (~15 MINUTES). UPON REACHING HOME, THE OWNER EXAMINED THE VISOR. THE VISOR HAS A VERY SMALL AND FRAGILE PLASTIC COMPONENT HOLDING THE VISOR IN PLACE. IT APPEARS THAT THE VISOR IS DESTINED TO BREAK. THE COMPONENT THAT BROKE IS ON THE ARM THAT SWINGS THE VISOR DOWN AND TO THE LEFT, AND IS EMBEDDED IN THE INTERIOR CEILING I.E., NOT ACCESSIBLE TO ANYONE WITHOUT TAKING THE VISOR APART WITH SCREW DRIVERS. THERE WAS 64,250 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AT TIME OF THE INCIDENT. THERE WAS A PASSENGER AT TIME OF INCIDENT, WHO CAN TESTIFY TO THE FACTS. *TR

UPON OPENING THE CAR, SMOKE AND FIRE COULD BE SEEN CENTERED AROUND THE RIGHT SIDE SEAT WARMER SWITCH AND ELECTRICAL PORT. NOTHING WAS PLUGGED IN AND KEY WAS NOT IN THE IGNITION. FIRE WAS PUT OUT BY BLOWING ON IT. SEAT WARMER SWITCH WAS MELTED ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND THE ELECTRICAL PORT CAP WAS PARTIALLY MELTED AND BLOWN OFF INTO THE CONSOLE TRAY. SOOT AND DAMAGE TO BUTTONS AND CONSOLE ABOVE THE SEAT WARMER BUTTONS ALONG WITH BUBBLED, MELTED VINYL ON CENTER CONSOLE. RETURNED CAR TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP THE NEXT MORNING. SERVICE MGR SAID THAT IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE HAD PLUGGED IN AND TOOK PICTURES. SERVICE MGR SENT PICTURES TO CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS. CORP HEADQUARTERS ALSO SAID IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE DID. CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND ASKED FOR INVESTIGATION BEHIND THE PANEL. JUNE 19, 2010 HYUNDAI INVESTIGATED AND SAID THAT THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING THAT WE DID. *TR

THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLED BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL, THAT PROVIDES ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN DRIVER'S AIR BAG AND AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE FAILED IN JUNE, 2010. THIS SAFETY HAZARD HAD TO BE REPAIRED ON JUNE 24, 2010 AND I HAD TO PAY FOR THE DEDUCTIBLE OF $100 ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. HYUNDAI RECENTLY ANNOUNCED A VEHICLE RECALL ON THIS SAFETY HAZARD (CAMPAIGN 103)--BUT REFUSES TO ACCEPT MY CLAIM FOR REPAIR REIMBURSEMENT OF THE REPAIR DEDUCTIBLE "BECAUSE I HAD THE CAR REPAIRED PRIOR TO THE DATES THEY ALLOWED FOR THIS CONDITION". THE TECHNICIAN ALSO ADVISED THAT IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE AIR BAGS COULD POSSIBLY NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000. UPDATED 03/16/11 *BF THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT AND HAVE BEEN REPLACED 10 TIMES OR MORE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. ALSO, THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR WAS NOT LOCKING/UNLOCKING PERIODICALLY. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE VEHICLE HAD AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. UPDATED 06/03/11
