HI I'M AN OWNER OF A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA WHO RESIDES IN THE STATE OF IOWA. I'M WRITING IN REGARDS TO THE HYUNDAI RECALL #089. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM HAS DETACHED FROM THE SUB-FRAME ON MY VEHICLE RENDERING IT UNDRIVEABLE. I HAVEN'T RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION LETTER ABOUT THE RECALL YET. DO I NEED TO ACTUALLY RECEIVE THE LETTER BEFORE I CAN CONTACT A DEALER/SERVICE CENTER FOR REPAIRS? *TR
RUSTED SUBFRAME ON HYUNDAI SONATA GLS CAUSED CV JOINT TO COME OFF WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, COMPANY ONLY PAYING TO FIX SUBFRAME, HYUNDAI NOT PAYING FOR TOW OR RENTAL CAR. *TR
WE TALK TO CONSUMER AFFAIR AND GAVE THEM THE VIN # AND THEY TOLD US THAT THE CAR WAS NOT COVER IN THE USA THAT THE CAR WAS MADE OUT SIDE THE USA AND THAT WE NEEDED TO CALL CANADA OR NEW MEXICO TO SEE WHAT THEY WILL DO, SUB FRAME RUST UNDER OUR 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA RIGHT WHEEL IS ALMOST OFF AND WE HAVE NOT FIXED THE CAR WE ARE NEEDING TO FIND WHAT WE NEED TO DO ON THIS MATTER PLEASE EMAIL ME TO LET US KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. *TR
WHEN I BROUGHT CAR IN FOR INSPECTION, WAS TOLD FRONT SUB-FRAME WAS ROTTED OUT. THERE IS A SIX INCH HOLE IN IT. THE CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED, IT HAS LOW MILES, AND IT SHOULD NOT HAVE ROTTED OUT LIKE IT HAS ALREADY. IF I HAD KEPT DRIVING IT THE ENTIRE WHEEL COULD HAVE FALLEN OFF, POSSIBLY HURTING OR KILLING ME AND MY FAMILY. HAVE NOT CORRECTED IT, AS IT'S AT LEAST A THOUSAND DOLLAR FIX. *TR
TRANSMISSION INPUT SPEED SENSOR FAILURE, THIS PROBLEM IS SHOCKINGLY ALL OVER THE INTERNET, THE SENSOR FAILS AND IF YOUR ON THE HIGHWAY, YOU SUDDENLY SLAM DOWN IN SPEED TO ALMOST HALF YOUR PREVIOUS SPEED WITH A LOUD BANG AS THE TRANSAXLE JUMPS FROM 4TH GEAR TO 2ND GEAR AND THE ENGINE REDLINES. DUE TO THE FAILED SENSOR TELLING THE TRANSAXLE TO DOWNSHIFT IMPROPERLY. A INEXPERIENCED OR LESS CAPABLE DRIVER MAY HAVE BEEN THROWN OUT OF CONTROL FROM THE SHEER FORCE OF THE IMPACT WHEN THE TRANSAXLE MIS-SHIFTS FROM 4TH TO 2ND WHEN THE SENSOR MALFUNCTIONS. *TR
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS AN ALIGNMENT PROBLEM. AT FIRST IT WASN'T TOO BAD BUT I TOOK IT IN TO GET THE ALIGNMENT FIXED. THE MECHANIC ASKED ME TO COME LOOK AT THE CAR. WHEN I WENT UNDER THE VEHICLE THE MECHANIC POINTED OUT TO ME THAT THERE WAS A GAPING HOLE IN THE SUB FRAME OF THIS VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD THAT IF HADN'T COME IN WHEN I DID THIS PROBLEM COULD HAVE KILLED ME. WORST OFF IS THAT THIS VEHICLE ONLY HAS 68,000 MILES ON IT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM GOING TO DO NOW THAT I HAVE A VEHICLE THAT I CAN'T USE AND NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO FIX IT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA MY LEFT FRONT WHEEL FELL OFF. MY FATHER AND THE TOW TRUCK OPERATOR SAID THE LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD COME OFF AFTER LOOKING FURTHER WE NOTICED THE SUB FRAME HAD BROKEN APART DUE TO ROT. THIS CAR WAS WELL CARED FOR AND IM FINDING IT HARD TO ACCEPT THIS AS NORMAL. AFTER LOOKING ONLINE I HAVE SEEN THIS TO BE COMMON ON THIS MODEL. MY DAUGHTER AND MYSELF WERE EXITING A HIGHWAY AND THE CAR SEEMED TO BE PULLING. WHEN I GOT ON A SECONDARY ROAD IT GOT WORSE. WITHIN A FEW MILES THE CAR JUST STOPPED. THIS HAPPENED SATURDAY AND IM CALLING HYUNDAI MONDAY. WITH LUCK THEY WILL DEAL WITH IT. *TR
WE HAVE A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE STEERING WENT OUT OF CONTROL AND NEARLY THREW MY STEPSON (AGE 23) UNDER A TRACTOR TRAILER. UPON TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOP TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG, THE NEW TIRES WERE COMPLETELY WORE OUT WITH METAL STICKING OUT. IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE SUBFRAME OF THE SONATA WAS RUSTED COMPLETELY IN TWO. THIS IS A DEVASTATING CONCERN BECAUSE THIS COULD HAVE COST MY CHILD A LIFE. THE SONATA ACTUALLY BELONGED TO MY SIXTEEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER! AFTER LOOKING ON THE INTERNET TO SEE IF THERE HAS BEEN A PROBLEM, I FIND THAT THERE IS AND HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM IN WHICH NO ONE HAS BOTHERED TO RECALL THE VEHICLES AND GET THEM OFF HE ROAD! AFTER TAKING MY 2000 SONATA TO TOWN FAIR TIRES TO REPLACE A DAMAGED TIRE I WAS TOLD "YOU HAVE A HOLE IN YOUR FRAME...YOU SHOULD GET THAT LOOKED AT" ...SO THE FOLLOWING MONDAY I TOOK IT IN TO MY MECHANIC WHO TOLD ME THAT TOWNFAIR TIRES NEVER SHOULD HAVE LET ME LEAVE THE LOT. MY A-FRAME HAD A 6" PIECE COMPLETELY ROTTED AND MISSING, NEAR MY FRONT RIGHT TIRE. HE SAID ONE GOOD POTHOLE AND MY WHEEL WOULD HAVE COME OFF. I'M TOLD IT WILL COST $1,000 TO FIX. AND IF I DECIDE TO DO THIS, I'M OUT OF A CAR FOR A WEEK!! AND WHILE I WAIT I'M STILL OUT OF A CAR ANYWAY! I'M HEARING MORE AND MORE STORIES OF OTHER SONATA OWNERS HAVING THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM. 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. NHTSA CAMPAIGN NO. 09V124000 HYUNDAI CAMPAIGN NO. 089. *NJ THE CONSUMER'S DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING WHEN THE FRONT FRAME BROKE CAUSING THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE TO FALL TO THE PAVEMENT, WHICH ALSO CAUSED THE FRONT WHEEL TO BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRANSAXLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. THE COLLISION CENTER CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP TO GET AN ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR OF THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ESTIMATE WAS ROUGHLY EQUAL TO THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE AND THEREFORE, REPAIRS WERE NOT RECOMMENDED. THE VEHICLE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY SCRAPPED. THE CONSUMER PURCHASED ANOTHER VEHICLE ON MARCH 14,2009. ON JANUARY 12, 2010, THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE VEHICLE THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN DEEMED AS NOT COST EFFECTIVE TO REPAIR. THE CONSUMER IS SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT UNDER THE RECALL NOTING THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED BECAUSE THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE FRAME COLLAPSE WHILE DRIVING CAUSED MORE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE THAN ITS VALUE. *JB UPDATED 04/02/10.*JB
SUB-FRAME CORROSION RESULTED IN A LOSS OF CONTROL AND VEHICLE DISABLEMENT DUE TO WHEEL COLLAPSE. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 SONATA WITH 128,165 MILES WITH A SUB-FRAME RUST PROBLEM. THE RIGHT SIDE LOWER CONTROL A-ARM IS SEPARATING FROM THE SUB-FRAME WITH MORE THAN ONE RUST HOLE EVIDENT IN THE SUB-FRAME. IT WAS DISCOVERED BY OUR LOCAL ALIGNMENT SHOP. TOOK THE CAR TO THEM FOR AN ALIGNMENT BECAUSE THE CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT AND TIRES SQUEAL WHILE NEGOTIATING RIGHT TURNS. UPON THEIR INSPECTION THEY POINTED OUT THE RUST AND A-ARM SEPARATION FROM THE SUB-FRAME AS WELL AS POINTED OUT HOW THE WHEEL ACTUALLY WAS SITTING MORE THAN AN INCH REARWARD. AFTER THEY POINTED THAT OUT IT WAS VERY OBVIOUS THE WHEEL WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING CENTERED IN THE WHEEL WELL. NOTHING HAS BEEN REPAIRED AS I AM RESEARCHING OPTIONS AVAILABLE; SPECIFICALLY TO SEE IF HYUNDAI WILL CORRECT THIS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
I WAS PULLING OUT OF A GAS STATION INTO A VERY BUSY INTERSECTION DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. I THEN HEARD A SNAP, A GRINDING NOISE, AND I COULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE MY CAR. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY SEVERAL CARS PASSING BY AT HIGH SPEEDS THAT DID NOT SEE MY CAR BECAUSE THEY WERE COMING AROUND A CORNER. TWO MEN STOPPED BEHIND ME AND PUSHED MY CAR BACK INTO THE PARKING LOT OF THE GAS STATION. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK, AND THEY LOOKED AT MY CAR THE NEXT MORNING. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT IT WAS DUE TO MY FRONT SUBFRAME BEING COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY. IT RESULTED IN ALMOST A COMPLETE SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM DETACHMENT FROM THE VEHICLE, AND WHEEL SEPARATION. THEY ARE CURRENTLY WAITING FOR THE NEW PART TO COME IN, IN ORDER TO FIX THE CAR, BUT THE BILL IS ESTIMATED TO BE $1,500. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING, THE DRIVER INSPECTED UNDERNEATH THE HOOD AND OBSERVED FUEL LEAKAGE FROM THE FUEL LINE. THERE WERE NO WARNINGS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL LINE. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF REPAIRING THE VEHICLE HIMSELF. 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA, 1200000 MILES NOTICED CAR WAS PULLING TO THE RIGHT ION SNOW COVERED ROADS, DID NOT DRIVE TO WORK NEXT DAY ON HIGHWAY, SON WAS TAKING TO REPAIR FACILITY, RIGHT FRONT WHEEL COLLAPSED. LUCKY WAS NOT ON HIGHWAY, REPAIR FACILITY SAYS FRONT SUSPENSION/FRAME WAS RUSTED THROUGH. *TR
2000 HYUNDAI SONATA SUB FRAME RUSTED OUT, THIS VEHICLE IS USED BY MY SON TO COMMUTE TO COLLEGE DAILY AND IT'S A MIRACLE THAT HE DIDN'T HAVE AN ACCIDENT. THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE ALSO NEEDS REPLACING EVEN THOUGH IT IS ALMOST NEW DUE TO THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE SUB-FRAME LITERALLY FALLING APART . I SEE THIS HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED BEFORE, WHY WAS NO RECALL ISSUED?*TR
ON 2/22/09 I NOTICED THE FRONT TIRES ON MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA WERE VERY WORN AND THE WIRES WERE SHOWING . THE TIRES WERE IN GOOD SHAPE WHEN THEY WERE ROTATED TO THE FRONT 1/29/09. AFTER GETTING SEVERAL QUOTES ON NEW TIRES, I CHOOSE OUR LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER TO REPLACE THE TIRES. THE CAR WAS TAKEN IN ON 2/25/09 TO THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER TO HAVE TIRES REPLACED. AFTER THE TECH HAD REPLACED THE TIRES, HE WAS GOING TO CHECK THE ALIGNMENT. UPON CHECKING THE ALIGNMENT HE NOTICE THAT THE FRAME BY THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WAS RUSTED OUT AND CRACKED. HE RECOMMENDED NOT DOING THE ALIGNMENT AND STATED THE CAR WASN'T SAFE TO DRIVE.THE NEXT DAY 2/26/09 I CONTACTED DEALERSHIP BY PHONE ABOUT AN ESTIMATE TO FIX THE PROBLEM, THEY GAVE ME A QUOTE OF $ 1300.00 FOR NEW SUBFRAME AND TO REPLACE IT THEN DO AN ALIGNMENT. AFTER DECIDING I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO PAY THAT MUCH MONEY, I WENT TO A LOCAL BODY SHOP LATER THAT MORNING TO GET AN ESTIMATE. THE BODY SHOP OWNER GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF $ 1035.00 TO REPLACE WITH A NEW SUBFRAME AND RECOMMENDED POSSIBLY USING A USED PART FROM A SALVAGE YARD, IF HE COULD FIND ONE. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE BODY SHOP AND LEFT THERE THE NEXT DAY 2/27/09. WHEN I WENT TO PICK THE CAR UP THE OWNER STATED THAT " HE HAD TRIED SEVERAL SAVAGE YARDS TO FIND A USED SUBFRAME AND COULDN' T FIND ONE BECAUSE THE 1999 AND 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA WERE NOTORIOUS FOR RUSTING OUT ON THE SUBFRAME AND MY ONLY CHOICE WAS GETTING A NEW SUBFRAME AND REPLACING IT FOR $ 1035.87". LATER THAT EVENING I DONE SOME MORE RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET ABOUT SUBFRAMES ON 2000 HYUNDAI SONATAS. I LEARNED THAT IT WAS VERY COMMON PROBLEM THAT THE SUBFRAME RUSTED OUT ON THE 1999-2002 HYUNDAI SONATAS FROM YOUR WEB SITE AND MANY OTHERS. I LEARNED THAT N.H.T.S.A HAS BEGAN AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MATTER AND I WANTED TO NOTIFY N.H.T.S.A ABOUT THE PROBLEM THAT I AM ALSO HAVING WITH MY VEHICLE. I NOTIFIED HYUNDAI ON 2/27/09 BY PHONE ABOUT MY PROBLEM AND I AM WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. *TR
2000 HYUNDAI SONATA, SUBFRAME ROTTED OUT AND LOWER CONTROL ARM MOUNTS BROKE OFF, IT WAS DISCOVERED DURING A PRE-ALIGNMENT INSPECTION AFTER THE CAR STARTED PULLING TO THE RIGHT. *TR
THE ENGINE CRADLE HAS A FIST SIZED HOLE RUSTED OUT OF IT CAUSING THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL TO BOW OUTWARD AND THE ALIGNMENT IS COMPLETELY OUT. THIS CAR HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES AND IS LESS THAN 10 YEARS OLD, THE FRAME SHOULD NOT BE RUSTED OUT ALREADY. *TR
2 WEEKS AGO I NOTICED THE CAR PULLING TO THE RIGHT AS IF THE ALIGNMENT WAS OFF. AS I WAS DRIVING THE CAR STARTED PULLING VERY HARD TO THE RIGHT AND COULD HEAR THE TIRE SQUEALING. I SLOWED DOWN TO TURN INTO A PARKING LOT AND THE CAR DROPPED SLIGHTLY AND WOULDN'T MOVE. IT WAS MAKING A GRINDING SOUND. I NOTICED THE TIRE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WASN'T ALIGNED PROPERLY. IT WAS BROKEN. AFTER HAVING THE CAR TOWED TO A AUTO SHOP. (CV PROS) ED TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM HAPPENED BECAUSE THE FRAME RUSTED OUT. HE SHOWED ME WHERE THE RUST BROKE THE FRONT SUSPENSION BAR IS WHAT I THINK HE CALLED IT. HE SAID THAT WAS THE REASON THAT THE WHEEL CAME LOOSE AND THAT A CAR OF ONLY 9 YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT RUST COMPLETELY THROUGH IN THAT AMOUNT OF TIME. AFTER CHECKING THE WEB SIGHT "LEMON LAWS" I FOUND WHERE THERE WERE MANY COMPLAINT OF 1999 THROUGH 2002 HYUNDAI SONATAS PROMPTED A FEDERAL PROBE BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
2000 HYUNDAI SONATA FRONT SUB FRAME PASSENGER SIDE, LARGE HOLE RUSTED THROUGH SUB FRAME ASSEMBLY RIGHT BEHIND LOWER CONTROL ARM. CAR JUST ALIGNED AND IS NOW OUT OF ALIGNMENT,TOOK IT BACK TO MECHANIC AND HE SHOWED ME THE HOLE IN SUB FRAME,RIGHT WHEEL IS NOW ABOUT 2 INCHES SET BACK AND CASTER IS KICKED OUT AT BOTTOM OF TIRE,LOOKS VERY DANGEROUS, AM TAKING CAR TO DEALER TO SE IF THEY WILL REPAIR, I AM ORIGINAL OWNER CAR HAS 88,000 MILES DEALER SEEMS TO BE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, I BELIEVE I HAVE JUST CAUGHT THE PROBLEM IN TIME BEFORE INJURIES MAY HAVE OCCURRED, I AM REPORTING THIS PROBLEM ONLY IN THE HOPE OTHERS MAY BE SO LUCKY, THE WHEEL COULD SEPARATE AND CREATE A REAL PROBLEM FOR ANYONE DRIVING THE CAR, I FEEL THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD RECALL THE CAR TO FIX ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR
THE VEHICLE STARTED RATTLING IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND RANDOMLY JERKING TO THE RIGHT SLIGHTLY. OVER A PERIOD OF 2 DAYS THE JERKING TO THE RIGHT FREQUENTLY (ABOUT EVERY 30 SECONDS OR LESS) MADE THE CAR ALMOST UNCONTROLLABLE. THE WHEEL HAS SHIFTED ABOUT 1 INCH BACK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW AND THE ENGINE CRADLE HAS ALMOST COMPLETELY ROTTED OUT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. IF IT HAD GONE ON FOR ANY MORE TIME, PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THE FIX COSTS WELL OVER $800.00 AND I AM ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED TO SEE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL OF MY VEHICLE TO MANY OTHER PEOPLE. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA AND TOOK IT TO MEINEKE, THEY TOLD ME THE WHOLE FRONT SUBFRAME WAS ROTTED OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, WHICH WOULD COST 1750.00. THE CAR US NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BUT FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, THERE IS A DEFECT WITH THE METAL HYUNDAI HAS USED WITH SOME OF ITS MODELS, ESPECIALLY THE SONATA. IF IT IS A DEFECT, IS THE CAR GOING TO BE RECALLED. I FEEL THE DEALERSHIP SHOULD FIX THIS WITHOUT ANY COST TO ME. WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE COMPLAINT, IS THERE A RECALL ON THE HORIZON. I DON'T HAVE 1750.00 TO FIX MY CAR AND HAVE TO TAKE IT OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE IT IS TO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. THE ENGINE IS LITERALLY FALLING OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR, THE MECHANIC AT MEINEKE SHOWED ME THAT BOTH SIDES OF THE SUB FRAME WAS RUSTED AND THE TIRES WERE SLANTED OUT BECAUSE OF THE STRESS OF THE ENGINE ON THE RUSTED FRAME. I LITERALLY COULD HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF HYUNDAI IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS DEFECT. *TR
MY MECHANIC FOUND A FIST-SIZED HOLE IN THE SUBFRAME OF MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA V6. THERE ARE 125,000 MILES ON THE CAR. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THIS SHOULD NOT OCCUR AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. AFTER FAILING A NEW YORK STATE INSPECTION, I WAS SHOCKED TO DISCOVER THAT MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS HAD A RUSTED ENGINE CRADLE THE SIZE OF A FIST ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE. NO PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS HAD INDICATED THAT THERE WAS THIS IMPENDING HAZARD. CONSEQUENTLY, I CAN NO LONGER DRIVE MY VEHICLE, AND ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC, IT WAS A MERE MATTER OF DAYS OR A SIMPLE ROUGH ROAD THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED MY SUBFRAME TO DETACH WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND AM AWAITING A RESPONSE AND FULLY EXPECT THEM TO NOT ONLY REPAIR THE ENGINE CRADLE, BUT MAKE OWNERS AWARE THAT MODELS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 1999 AND 2002 FACE THIS HAZARD TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD DUE TO THEIR OWN MANUFACTURING DEFECTS. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHEN THE CAR WAS FIRST PURCHASED IN FEBRUARY OF 2006 THE CAR HAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WHERE THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PAST 25 MPH. I HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED. THEN LATER IN THAT YEAR WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65 MPH I NOTICED THE CAR WOULD SWAY DRAMATICALLY WHEN YOU TURNED THE WILL RIGHT. TAKING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER THEY CLAIMED TO BE JUST THAT THE CAR NEEDED AN ALIMENT. NOW IN 2008 I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE RIGHT AXLE OF THE CAR REPLACED BECAUSE WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP LIGHT THE RIGHT WHEEL FELL FROM THE CAR AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. TAKING IT TO A TIRE SHOP TO HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE WHOLE FRONT UNDERSIDE OF THE FRAME WAS DRASTICALLY RUSTED AND THAT DRIVING THE CAR IN THE STATE WOULD LEAD TO A WRECK OR WORSE. NOW I AM LOST AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM AND I HAVE FOUND OVER 20 REPORTS OF THIS CAR MODEL HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS VERY UPSETTING THAT NO RECALL HAS BEEN PLACED ON THESE DEATH TRAPS ON WHEELS. SOMEONE NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS BEFORE SOME DIES. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME GETTING READY TO GET ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN MY CAR MADE A LOUD NOISE, AND IT SEEMED THE FRONT END HAD DROPPED. HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ADVISED ME THAT THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE AXEL HAD RUSTED OUT. I HAD PURCHASED A SERVICE CONTRACT THROUGH ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP. SERVICE CONTRACT SAID THAT HYUNDAI WAS GOING TO REPAIR MY DAMAGES FREE OF CHARGE; IN OTHER WORDS, I DID NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH MY SERVICE CONTRACT TO HAVE REPAIRS DONE AND I DID NOT HAVE TO PAY THE $50 DEDUCTIBLE. HOWEVER, UPON RETURNING TO PICK UP MY CAR I WAS INFORMED BY DEALERSHIP THAT I DID IN FACT HAVE TO PAY THE DEDUCTIBLE. DEALERSHIP ADVISED THAT HYUNDAI ONLY PAID FOR A PORTION OF THE PROBLEM. I HAVE READ SOME ON- LINE COMPLAINTS AND HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON AND HIGHLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. HAD I HAD MADE IT TO THE INTERSTATE, I AM SURE MYSELF AND OTHERS WOULD BE INJURED AND OR DEAD! DEALERSHIP 9 MONTHS PRIOR HAD FIXED A BALL- JOINT ETC. ON THIS SAME SIDE. FEEL DEALERSHIP IS VERY NEGLIGENT IN THIS MATTER- SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING ESPECIALLY IF IT IS COMMON. I WAS NOT HAPPY FINDING OUT THAT I HAD TO PAY DEDUCTIBLE ESPECIALLY WHEN I WAS TOLD I DIDN'T HAVE TO. THEY HAD ME SIGN PAPERWORK FOR THE DEDUCTIBLE, BUT I WAS TOLD THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO USE IT....IT WAS FORMALITIES "JUST IN CASE". RIGHT FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM PULLED COMPLETELY OUT OF THE OF THE ENGINE CRADLE CAUSING DAMAGE TO FENDER AND SUSPENSION AND DRIVE TRAIN. INSURANCE COMPANY HAS TOTALED VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THIS. ENGINE STALLED AS I WAS TURNING IN AN INTERSECTION, I AVOIDED A CRASH. REPORTED TO DEALER AS IT HAPPENED 3 MORE TIMES. THEY REPLACED MY BATTERY AND GAVE ME A CARFAX REPORT AND DENIED ANY RECALLS, EVEN THOUGH I SHOWED THEM A PRINTOUT OF ONE ON THIS WEBSITE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON SEVERAL TIMES ,TAKEN TO AUTO STORE AND PUT ON DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE, MAF SENSOR DEFECTIVE AS STATED ON PRINTOUT X2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS .STILL STALLS AT LIGHTS, AND ALSO STALLS WHEN EITHER CHANGING TO REVERSE OR VISE VERSA. MY SON WENT OVER A SPEED BUMP AND HAD HIS RIGHT FRONT TIRE FOLD IN AT THE TOP. IT WAS FOUND OUT BY A REPAIR SHOP THAT THE RIGHT CONTROL ARM HAD SEPARATED FROM THE SUB-FRAME WHICH WAS VERY CORRODED. TWO ATTEMPTS AT GETTING A USED SUB-FRAME AT A SALVAGE YARD ALSO REVEALED CORRODED SUB-FRAMES. THE SUB-FRAME HAD TO BE REPLACE NEW. A POWER STEERING RETURN LINE LYING AGAINST THE SUB-FRAME WAS ALSO CORRODED AND LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPAIRED. THE OLD SUB-FRAME IS BEING HELD AT THE REPAIR SHOP SO THAT I CAN DOCUMENT THE DAMAGE WITH PHOTOGRAPHS. *TR

WHEN I ARRIVED HOME, I NOTICED THAT MY FRONT RIGHT WHEEL WAS RESTING AT A STRANGE ANGLE, POINTING SLIGHTLY OUTWARDS TO THE RIGHT EVEN WHEN ALL OF THE OTHER WHEELS WERE STRAIGHT. MY UNCLE, A CAR MECHANIC, TOOK A LOOK AT THE CAR AND INFORMED ME THAT THE ENTIRE SUB FRAME HAD ROTTED AND THAT MY FRONT RIGHT WHEEL WAS ON THE VERGE OF COMING OFF AS THE CONTROL ARM WAS RUSTING OFF OF THE FRAME AND THAT THE CAR WAS NOT ABLE TO BE FIXED. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, I CAME ACROSS MANY ONLINE ARTICLES HIGHLIGHTING PROBLEMS WITH 1999-2004 HYUNDAI SONATAS AND EVENTUALLY FOUND YOUR DEFECT PAGE THAT DESCRIBED EXACTLY WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO I AND MANY OTHER OWNERS OF EARLIER HYUNDAI SONATAS. I FEEL THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS FAULTY MODELS THAT COULD HAVE SEVERELY INJURED MY PASSENGER AND I AND COULD EVENTUALLY PROVE TO BE FATAL TO OTHERS UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THEIR ABNORMALLY ROTTING SUB FRAMES.
