DT: THE SPEEDOMETER INTERMITTINGLY STOPS WORKING WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONSUMER SAYS SHE HAS TRIED TO SEE IF SPEED OR DISTANCE AFFECTS IT. SHE SAYS THERE IS NO REASON THAT SHE CAN SEE TO MAKE IT STOP WORKING. THE CONSUMER HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR THE 5TH TIME TODAY. THE MANUFACTURER CALLED THE DEALER TO GET IT FIXED. SHE SAID OTHER ELECTRIC COMPONENTS ARE NOT WORKING AS WELL. THE DOORS, WINDOWS, AND CLOCK ARE SLOWLY GETTING WORSE. THE CONSUMER HAS CONCERNS THAT IT MIGHT LEAD TO SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS, LIKE A FIRE. *JB
PROBLEMS WITH BRAKE EQUIPMENT ON HYUNDAI SONATA.*MR WHILE BRAKING THE CONSUMER HEARD A NOISE FRONT HE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. OVER TIME THE NOISE PROGRESSED INTO A GRINDING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AT 19400 MILES AND THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR BRAKE PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE TECHNICIAN SHOWED THE CONSUMER THE CORRODED AND DIRTY SURFACES THAT THE BRAKE PAD HOLDER RESTED ON. THIS SURFACE IS HORIZONTAL AND DOES NOT ALLOW THE SURFACE TO DRAIN OR CLEAN ITSELF. THE BRAKE ROTORS WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALER BUT THE CONSUMER WAS CHARGED $160. FOR THE LABORS AND BRAKE PADS. THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THAT HAVING THE BRAKE REPLACED AT 19000 MILES IS UNREASONABLE AND REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT. *NM
WE RECENTLTY PURCHASED A USED BUT SHOWROOM CONDITION HYUNDAI SONATA WITH SOMEWHERE AROUND 29,000 MILES ON IT FROM A DEALERSHIP. AFTER ABOUT THREE WEEKS MY SON HAD TO LEAVE IT IN A PARKING LOT. THE THROTTLE/CRUISE CONTROL CABLE (EVEN THO HE DID NOT HAVE THE CRUISE CONTROL ON) WAS STUCK. HE THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED SO HEDROVE THE CAR A FEW MORE WEEKS AND WAS ON HIS WAY HOME WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN ONLY THIS TIME HE RAN INTO A UTILITY POLE. THE CAR WAS DAMAGED PRETTY BADDLY BUT THANK THE LORD HE WAS NOT. HE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THE UTILITY COMPANY IS CHARGING US ABOUT $4000.00 OR MORE DOLLARS FOR THE WORK THEY HAD TO DO TO THE POLE. I CALLED HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS. THE CAR IS AT A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. CONSUMER AFFAIRS IS MAILING ME A FORM TO FILL OUT. I DO NOT KNOW IF HYUNDAI IS GOING TO CLAIM RESPONSIBLITY OR NOT. I FEEL THAT THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE RESEARCHED TO SEE IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE THROTTLE/CRUISE CONTROL STICKING MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP OR CAUSING ANY OTHER PROBLEM. I HATE TO SEE SOMEONE DIE FROM THIS.*AK
TRANSMISSION FAILED. *NM
THE CONSUMER HAS A TIRE FOR LIFE CONTRACT. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPLACEMENT TIRES. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED WITH P205/65R15 M/S. THE VEHICLE MANUAL STATED THAT THE APPROPRIATE TIRE SIZE SHOULD BE P205/60R15 91H. *AK *SC
WHILE OPENING THE DRIVER'S DOOR CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE DOOR HANDLE WAS SHARP. CONSUMER'S HAND WAS CUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE DOOR HANDLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND HE REPLACED IT. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
HYUNDAI SONOTA 2002 HAD FRONT ROTORS REPLACED AT 10,500 MILES DUE TO WARPING. FRONT PADS WERE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. AT 43,500, WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP ALL 4 ROTORS WERE WARPED DURING STATE INSPECTION. SO, ONLY 33,000 MILES ON NEW FRONT ROTORS. BOTH FRONT AND REAR BRAKE PADS WERE STILL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION (VIRTIUALLY NEW). THIS DOCUMENTED ON THE CARS STATE INSPECTION REPORT DONE BY THE DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP CONTACTED LOCAL HYUNDAI REP WHO REFUSED TO REPLACE ROTORS. REASON, EXCESSIVE BRAKING BY DRIVER SO NOT FAULTY MATERIALS FROM HYUNDAI. TWO REPORTS DON'T COINCIDE. EXCESSIVE BRAKING AND EXCELLENT BRAKE PASDS. LOCAL REP DID NOT COME INTO DEALERSHIP TO VIEW CONDITION OF CAR OR DO ANY INVESTIGATING INTO POTENTIAL FAULTY MANUFACTURING MATERIALS. OWNER FILED A COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS. CREDIT THE DEALERSHIP FOR COMPLIMENTARY CUTTING OF ROTORS BUT HISTORY SHOWS ROTORS WILL WARP AGAIN AFTER CUTTING.*AK
FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS WE HAVE TWO 2002 HYUNDAI SONATAS, MODEL GLS 6 CYLINDER. BOTH CARS HAVE HAD ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH FRONT ROTORS WARPING AND HAVING DIFFICULTY BRAKING TO AN EMERGENCY STOP. THE DEALER HAS REPLACED ROTORS ON EACH VEHICLE ONCE, AND WITHIN AN 18 MONTH PERIOD, THE PROBLEM RE-OCCURS. *NM
GOODRICH CONTROL PLUS TIRES CAUSED PROBLEMS WITH 2002 HYUNDAI SONATA. *MR THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN PRESENT SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF OWNERSHIP. WITH 25 MILES ON THE TIRES, A FLAT TIRE WAS PRESENT. THE TIRE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE VALVE STEM HAD BEEN CUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TWO DAYS LATER ANOTHER FLAT TIRE WAS PRESENT. THE LEFT FRONT TIRE EACH TIME. IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO CHANGE FROM A "T" SERIES RATED TO TIRE TO AN "H" RATED TIRE. SOON AFTER PLACING THE "H" RATED TIRE, AND USING A SHORTER VALVE STEM, THE HUB CAPS CONTINUED TO ROTATE ON THE RIM, CAUSED BY THE TIRE FLEXING AGAINST THE HUB CAP. *SC
DRIVING AT 25 - 30 MPH I WAS HIT HEAD ON BY ANOTHER MID SIZE VEHICLE. I SUSTAINED HEAD, NECK, AND BACK INJURIES AND MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. MY CONCERN IS THAT I HAVE A 2003 HYUNDAI SONATA WILL THOSE BAGS NOT DEPLOY IN A HEAD ON? MY WIFE AND CHILD DRIVE THE 2003 . I AM VERY CONCERNED. MY INSURANCE COMPANY WANT TO "REPAIR" MY VEHICLE THAT FAILED.
ONSUMER STATED EVERY TIME SHE EXITED THE VEHICLE SHE WAS BEING SHOCKED. DEALER INDICATED THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL SHORT, BUT HDS NOT DETERMINED WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. *AK
BOTH FRONT DOORS INSIDE HANDLES HAVE CHROME PLATING PEELING AT SEAM. THIS PRESENTS A HAZARD BECAUSE THE SEAM IS AT THE TOP PORTION OF THE HANDLE AND CUT MY WIFE'S FINGER. *AK
DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED THE INTERIOR MATERIAL ON THE PASSENGER'S DOOR HANDLE OF THE VEHICLE CAUSED MINOR INJURIES TO A CHILD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPLACED THE DOOR HANDLES. THE CONSUMER IS NOW HAVING THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. *JB UPDATED 3/9/2006 - *NM
CAR MAKES A LOUD SCREECHING SOUND WHEN COMING TO A STOP. DEALER HAS INSPECTED THE BRAKES, AND SAYS THEY ARE AT 90%. DEALER HAS BEEN UNWILLING TO INVESTIGATE THE SOURCE OF THE SCREECHING SOUND.*AK
I PURCHASED A 2002 HYUNDAI SONATA AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH IT. TO DATE WE HAVE HAD THE O2 SENSORS REPLACED DUE TO NUMEROUS CHECK ENGINE INDICATORS. WE HAVE HAD THE CLUTCH REPLACED, THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED, THE CLUTCH DEPRESSION SWITCH AFTER HAVING THE CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION REPLACED THE SWITCH FAILED TO WORK CONSISTENTLY PREVENTING THE CAR FROM STARTING. AFTER HAVING THE SWITCH REPLACED, THE VERY NEXT DAY I SMELLED AN ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL WHICH THEN CAUSED MY HEADLIGHTS TO DIM THE HEATER FAN/MOTOR TO DROP IN SPEED AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS TO MOVE VERY SLOWLY. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, HOUSER HYUNDAI OF SPRINGFIELD, MA. AND WHILE WAITING FOR THE SERVICE BAY DOORS TO OPEN THE CAR WAS ENVELOPED IN A CLOUD OF SMOKE THE INSTANT I TURNED THE HEATER ON (JANUARY 10, 2004) TEMP OUTSIDE WAS -9 DEGREES. AT ANY RATE THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS NOTIFIED THE INSTANT I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING BUT HE DID NOT SEE THE SMOKE WHEN I WAS WAITING AT THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. HE DID ADMIT TO SMELLING THE BURNING ??? BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM WHEN WE LEFT IT TO BE CHECKED AND I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THE OLD SAYING GOES WHERE THERE IS SMOKE THIS "FIRE" SO I AM CHECKING IT OFF AS SUCH IN THIS COMPLAINT. THE CAR IS AND HAS BEEN A SAFTEY CONCERN TO ME AND MY FAMILY. I HAVE A CO-WORKER AND MY WIFE AS WITNESSES TO BOTH THE BURNING SMELL AND ELECTRICAL "LOAD" MALFUNCTIONS DUE TO WHAT EVER HAS SHORT CIRCUITED AND MY WIFE IN PARTICULAR OBSERVED THE "SMOKE" BILLOWING FROM BENEATH THE CAR ON THE DAY WE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. I FULLY INTEND TO FILE A COMPLAINT AS WELL WITH THE MASSACHUSETTS STATE GOVERNMENT OF WHICH I AM EMPLOYED UNDER THE "LEMON LAW." RESPECTFULLY; DALE WYMAN. *AK
WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION. UPON IMPACT, THE DUAL AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, INSTEAD THE AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT CAME ON. *AK THE RADIATOR HAD BROKEN ALSO. *SC
WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH THE DRIVER'S SIDE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYED INADVERTENTLY. THE CONSUMER HAD THREE CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE, TWO OF WHICH WERE DISABLED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES IN THIS INCIDENT. THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THE PROBLEM. *NLM
THE CONSUMER STATED THE AIR BAG SENSORS WERE DEFECTIVE. THE OWNER TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND HAD THE WIRING HARNESS WAS REPAIRED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE SENSOR LIGHT CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE. PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS *JB
LEFT DRIVER SIDE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE VEHCLE WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY. CONSUMER WAS FORCED TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER TO REPAIR THE TIRE. THE SPARE TIRE HAD STRESS MARKS LOCATED ON THE INNER SIDE OF THE TIRE. HANKOOK, T125/70D15, DOT # H6MXBH490. *AK

WHILE DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEED, THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO WARNING PRIOR TO THE DEPLOYMENT. *AK *SCC THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE WAS ON RECALL, HOWEVER THEY DID NOT HAVE THE CONSUMERS ADDRESS TO NOTIFY HIM. *JB
WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNDETERMINED SPEED, THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY ALTERNATOR FAILURE. THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A TSB FOR THIS ISSUE.*AK HOUSER DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR WITH A DIFFERENT TYPE AND CONFIGURATION. ANOTHER DEALER REPLACED THE BATTERY, ALTERNATOR AND DRIVE BELT. ALL WORK WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *PH *JB
WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 65MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING DRIVER SIDE TIRE THREAD SEPARATED FROM THE WHEEL.*AK

VEHICLE WAS HIT ON DRIVER SIDE DOOR(S) - VEHICLE WAS ROTATED 180 DEGREES FROM THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT. NECK AND BACK INJURIES. BOTH FRONT AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, SIDE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. *AK
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CONTINUES TO COME ON. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT HYUNDAI IS HAVING A LARGE PROBLEM WITH O2 SENSORS, ESPECIALLY IN WARM CLIMATES. DEALER WORKED ON THE PROBLEM ONCE ALREADY, BUT THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO HAVE RETURNED. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP BEING WORKED ON. THE SERVICE PERSON SAID THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY PROBLEMS HE IS SUPRISED THEY HAVE NOT HAD A RECALL JUST FOR THE O2 SENSOR. *AK
DT: ROTORS HAVE GONE BAD. THE BRAKES PUMP BACK WHEN BRAKES ARE DEPRESSED.*AK THE DEALER TURNED THE ROTORS AT 13624 MILES AND WITHIN 1000 MILES THE ROTORS WARPED AGAIN. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. ANOTHER SERVICE CENTER INDICATED THAT EH ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *NM
I HAVE A 2002 HYUNDAI SONATA THAT I BOUGHT NEW IN APRIL OF 2002. AS OF MARCH OF THIS YEAR AT 27,700 MILES, IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT 5 SEPARATE TIMES. THE FIRST TIME IT SHOWED AN OXYGEN SENSOR. WITHIN THE NEXT 100 MILES IT WAS ON AGAIN, THIS TIME IT WAS AN EVAP CODE AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP SEAL SO THEY TIGHTENED IT. WITHIN ANOTHER 100 MILES IT CAME ON AGAIN AND WAS ANOTHER OXYGEN SENSOR. IT CAME ON AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 3 MONTHS (AND AROUND 9,000 MILES) AND THIS TIME IT WAS THE EVAP CODE AGAIN AND THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE FUEL CAP. THIS HAD TO BE ORDERED AND I CALLED BACK AFTER THREE WEEKS AND SOMEONE HAD FORGOT TO ORDER IT SO IT AFTER ALL TOOK 3 MONTHS TO REPLACE IT. IN THE MEANTIME THE CAR WAS DETAILED AND THE COMPANY UNHOOKED THE BATTERY, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED OFF FOR A LITTLE OVER A MONTH (THE LIGHT WAS ON WHEN IT WENT TO THE DETAIL COMPANY). SO THE FUEL CAP WAS EVENTUALLY REPLACED AND THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN WITHIN 100 MILES AFTER. THIS TIME IT WAS 3 DIFFERENT CODES. ONE FOR ANOTHER OXYGEN SENSOR, ONE FOR A THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR, AND ONE FOR A FUEL INCREMENT SENSOR. I AM AT 47,800 MILES NOW AND I AM TOLD THAT IT COULD TAKE A FEW MONTHS TO GET THE OXYGEN SENSOR DUE TO HYUNDAI UPDATING THE SENSOR DUE TO A DEFECT. BY THE TIME MY CAR IS FIXED, THIS TIME THE WARRANTY WILL MORE THAN LIKELY BE UP OR CLOSE TO IT AND ALL I CAN GET FROM HYUNDAI IS THAT THEY WILL FIX IT UP TO THE 60,000 MILE WARRANTY AND IF THE LIGHT COMES ON AFTER THAT IT IS MY PROBLEM. THEY SAY IT IS NOT A CONCERN DUE TO SOMETHING DIFFERENT EVERY TIME. *LA
IMPACT TO DRIVERS DOOR AND THE SIDE AIRBAG FAILED TO DEPLOY.*JB
ON COLD MORNINGS WHERE THE TEMPERATURE WOULD DROP BELOW 30, I WAS EXPERIENCING A LOSS OF BRAKE ABILITY. THIS WOULD ONLY HAPPEN THE FIRST TIME I DROVE THE CAR IN THE MORNING AND ALWAYS ON THE SECOND OR THIRD TAP OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. I WENT TO MY DEALERSHIP IN NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2002 AND THEY DRAINED THE BRAKE LINE AND TOLD ME IT WAS FIXED. IT WAS NOT AND I HAD TO GO BACK. THIS LAST TIME I COULD NOT STOP IN TRAFFIC AND HAD TO ROLL THRU A BUSY INTERSECTION. THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD ACTUALLY FREEZE UP OR LOCK IN THE "UP" POSITION IN THE CAR, THEREFORE NOT ALLOWING ME TO PRESS DOWN TO STOP. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WOULD WORK. MY DEALER HAD THE CAR FOR MORE THAN A WEEK BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT THIS SECOND TIME. I BELIEVE HE SAID IT WAS A DEFECT IN A SPECIFIC PART. HE TOLD ME "BOOSTER VACUUM LINE CHECK VALVE FROZEN SHUT" AND HE REPLACED THE BOOSTER HOSE. IF THIS WAS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT, I AM CONCERNED OTHER SONATA OWNERS MAY EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM AND I FELT I SHOULD REPORT THIS TO YOUR AGENCY.
WHILE DRIVING 30-35 MPH VEHICLE WAS HIT ON DRIVER SIDE, BETWEEN DRIVER DOOR AND PASSENGER DOOR. BOTH FRONT AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, SIDE AIR BAG ON DRIVER SIDE DID NOT. DRIVER HIT HIS HEAD ON WINDOW. DAMAGE TO VEHICLE UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME. TS

I OWN A 2002 HYUNDAI SONATA WITH THE ENGINE CRADLE FRAME COMPLETELY RUSTING OUT. VEHICLE FAILED NH STATE INSPECTION AND IS CONSIDERED UNSAFE TO DRIVE AT THIS POINT. MILEAGE: 123,000. *TR
S10 APPROPRIATE HANDLING FM OWNER OF A 2002 HYUNDAI SONATA CONCERNED RE DEFECTED CLUTCH, HAS HAD SEVERAL CLUTCH REPAIRS. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE CLUTCH WAS REPLACED SIX TIMES. THE CONSUMER STATED EACH TIME THE CLUTCH HAD TO BE REPLACED, THEY FOUND A DIFFERENT DEFECT; SUCH AS EXCESSIVE PLAY AND SLIPPAGE. *JB
CONSUMER STATES WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WOULD VIBRATE AT ANY SPEED, CAUSING BY THE UPPER BALL JOINT AND THE LOWER BALL JOINT. DEALER HAS INSPECTED THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIME, AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. TS
CONSUMER STATES THAT AFTER CLOSING DRIVER SIDE DOOR THE SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, SMOKE STARTED COMING FROM UNDER THE SEAT, A FEW SECONDS LATER THE ENTIRE SEAT WAS ON FIRE. THEIR IS A RECALL FOR THIS, BUT DOESN'T STATE IT CAN CAUSE A FIRE PER CONSUMER. TS
