TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR WAS DISABLED WITH THE CONTACT ILLUMINATION OF THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT THE OCCUPANCY SENSOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED HAVING THE SEAT CUSHION REPLACED AT A COST OF $800. THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,534.
MY SUNVISOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE DROPPED DOWN AND WILL NOT GO BACK TO THE UPRIGHT POSITION. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME MY SUNVISOR HAS BROKEN. ONE ON EACH SIDE. I HAVE SPENT 100 DOLLARS REPLACING THE OTHER SIDE. I DO NOT HAVE ANY CHILDREN IN MY CAR, IT IS JUST MYSELF AND MY HUSBAND. THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT IT BROKE FOR NO APPARENT REASON. *TR
SUN VISOR FAILED AND NO LONGER WILL REMAIN UP. IT IS EXTREMELY LOOSE AND POINTS DIRECTLY DOWNWARD. THIS IS CAUSED BY A DESIGN AND/OR A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. IT PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD AS THE VISOR OBSTRUCTS THE DRIVERS VIEW. IN AS MUCH AS THIS PROBLEM IS PREVALENT WITH THIS MODEL VEHICLE AND IS COSTLY TO CORRECT WHEN THE VEHICLE IS OUT-OF-WARRANTY, IT SHOULD BE RECALLED OR AT A MINIMUM BE PROVIDED WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY BY THE MANUFACTURER. MY VEHICLE IS STILL IN WARRANTY. *KB
ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON THEN IT STARTED WITH A TICKING NOISE, IT GOT LOUDER AND LOST POWER. I AM TOLD I NEED A NEW ENGINE. IT THERE ANY RECALL ON THIS MODEL CAUSE I FOUND QUITE A FEW PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE PARKED, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO CLOSE THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW BUT IT WOULD NOT CLOSE. THE CONTACT HAD TO MANUALLY PUSH THE WINDOW CLOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE WINDOW MODULE. ONE YEAR AFTER THE REPAIR, THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WOULD NOT OPEN OR CLOSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE WARRANTY HAD RECENTLY EXPIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000. . UPDATED 07/27/12 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THERE MUST BE A DEFECT WITH THE WINDOWS. THE CONTACT WAS TWO MONTHS OVER THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY. JUN 28, 2011 - SAVANNAH, GA AIR BAG LIGHT ON JUNE 1, 2011, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALSHIP BECAUSE THE RED "AIR BAG" LIGHT CAME ON. DEALER DIAGNOSTICS FOUND THAT THE OCCUPANCY SENSOR IN PASSENGER SEAT WAS DEFECTIVE. TECHNICIAN RESET THE BIT FAULT FOR THE LIGHT, BUT THE HYUNDAI SERVICE CENTER THAT DIAGNOSED THE CAR INFORMED ME IF IT ILLUMINATED AGAIN, THEY WERE NOT ALLOWED TO RESET IT MORE THAN ONCE AND IT WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $900 TO REPLACE THE PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR. IF IT IS NOT REPLACED, THE AIRBAG SYSTEM WILL NOT WORK. PRIOR TO THE RED LIGHT "AIR BAG" LIGHT ILLUMINATING, THE AMBER "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" LIGHT HAS ILLUMINATED SPORATICALLY OVER THE PAST YEAR OR SO, SOMETIMES WITH THE PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPIED BY AN ADULT, SOMETIMES WITHOUT A PASSENGER AT ALL. THIS AMBER LIGHT HAS ALSO MYSTERIOUSLY FLASHED ON/OFF AT TIMES, AGAIN REGARDLESS IF SEAT WAS OCCUPIED OR NOT. RESEARCH SHOWS NUMEROUS AMOUNTS OF 2007 SONATAS WITH SAME PROBLEM. ON JUNE 25TH, THE RED "AIR BAG" LIGHT RE-ILLUMINATED. AT BOTH TIMES, THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED (BY AN ADULT). THE DEALER INFORMS ME THAT NHSTA CAMPAIGN 08V161000 IS NOT APPLICABLE TO THIS VIN, BUT THE DESCRIPTION OF THE RECALL SUMMARY SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE THE PROBLEM DEMONSTRATED.
MY 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS HAS DEFECTIVE REAR BRAKES. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN MARCH 2008 AND AT 15,000 MILES THE BRAKES STARTED SQUEALING. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO THE DEALER IN SEPTEMBER 2009 AND WAS TOLD THE REAR PADS WERE FROZEN WHICH WAS CAUSING THE SQUEALING. THE DEALER CLEANED AND ADJUSTED THE REAR BREAKS. IN JUNE 2011, WHEN STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT, THE REAR BRAKES SUDDENLY STARTED TO STICK AND MAKE NOISE AS IF METAL WAS RUBBING ON METAL. THIS REALLY CONCERNED ME SINCE I HAD MY FAMILY WITH TWO CHILDREN IN THE CAR. THIS HAPPENED WITH THE CAR HAVING 36,000 MILES ON IT. I WENT ON-LINE AND GOOGLED TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS TYPE OF EXPERIENCE. I NOTED HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. CAR EXPERTS MENTIONED THIS IS AN ENGINEERING DESIGN FAULT, WHICH HYUNDAI HAS FAILED TO RESPONSIBILITY FOR. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO SCHEDULE AN INSPECTION AND ASKED THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE IF THEY HAD ENCOUNTERED SIMILAR ISSUES WITH OTHER CUSTOMERS. HE SAID HE WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS BRAKE ISSUE. I HAD A HARD TIME BELIEVING HIM SINCE THIS ISSUE APPEARS TO BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH MANY HYUNDAI SONATA GLS OWNERS. COULD THIS BE A HYUNDAI MONEY EARNING SCAM? HYUNDAI NEEDS TO RECALL THESE CARS DUE TO THE SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES DUE TO THE FAULTY REAR BRAKE DESIGN! SAFETY! SAFETY! SAFETY! I HOPE SOMETHING GETS DONE! *TR
ON JUNE 13, 2011, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. DEALER FOUND THAT THE OCCUPANCY SENSOR IN PASSENGERS SEAT WAS DEFECTIVE. I JUST BOUGHT MY 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA MARCH 29, 2011 JUST 3 MONTHS. ACCORDING TO TECHNICIAN THAT DIAGNOSE THE CAR, NOTHING WAS DONE BY ME OR MY PASSENGERS TO SET OFF THE SENSOR LIGHT. IT REMAINS ON. TECHNICIAN SAID IT WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $900 TO REPLACE. IF IT IS NOT REPLACED, CAR CAN NOT PASS INSPECTION. RESEARCH SHOWED NUMEROUS AMOUNT OF VEHICLES WITH SAME PROBLEM. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. HYUNDAI SHOULD PLACE A RECALL ON THIS PART. *TR
PASSENGER SIDE REAR BRAKE CALIPER FROZEN CAUSING METAL ON METAL CONTACT AND PREMATURE FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT OF REAR PADS AND RIGHT REAR ROTOR. FRONT PADS WERE HARDLY WORN. CAR MILEAGE AT 17,000 MILES WITH NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. *KB
PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE SUN VISORS WILL NOT STAY IN PLACE CAUSING VISUAL OBSTRUCTION AT RANDOM TIMES. THE VISORS WILL FALL WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND CAUSES A SIGNIFICANT DISTRACTION TO THE DRIVER WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR
BOTH VISORS HAVE BROKEN, ALONG WITH THE DRINK HOLDER IN THE MIDDLE CONSOLE. THERE IS A RECALL FOR A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA IN SOME STATES; HOWEVER, MY VEHICLE APPARENTLY ISN'T INCLUDED IN THAT. I HAVE BEEN READING FORUMS ON THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS APPARENT IT, IN FACT, IS A PROBLEM AND NEEDS A RESOLUTION TO BOTH DEFECTS. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI ABOUT IT AND THEY SAY THAT MY VIN IS "NOT COVERED". I THINK IT IS LUDACROUS THAT HYUNDAI DOESN'T TAKE ACTION TO FIX THIS AND THEY WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE CUSTOMERS. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE SUNVISOR ON MY 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA RANDOMLY FALLS DOWN FROM DOWN FROM ITS RETIRED POSITION. THIS OCCURRED AGAIN THIS PAST WEEK AND OBSCURED MY VISION WHILE TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 50MPH ON A TWO LANE ROAD NEAR MY HOME. I MOMENTARILY WAS NOT IN FULL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND ALMOST RAN OFF THE ROAD INTO A DITCH DUE TO MY VISION OBSTRUCTION. ONCE I FLIPPED THE VISOR BACK UP I REGAINED CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE WITH MY HEART IN MY THROAT. I REALLY BELIEVE THAT THE DEFECTIVE VISOR ALMOST KILLED ME BECAUSE IT RANDOMLY FLOPPED DOWN, BLOCKING MY VIEW OF THE ROAD. THIS VISOR ISSUE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW AND THIS TIME IT REALLY ALMOST KILLED ME. I WILL BE GETTING THIS FIXED NEXT WEEK, BUT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE PART. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE WHEN HE APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY DEPLETED AND THE ROTORS WERE IN POOR CONDITION. THEY REPLACED THE ROTORS AS WELL AS THE BRAKES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 57,990.
2007 HYUNDAI SONATA 3.3L THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR FAILURE. FAILURE CAUSES CAR TO GO INTO LIMP MODE NOT EXCEEDING 20MPH. FAILURE CAN OCCUR AT HIGH SPEEDS. CELS REPORTED ARE P2135, P2106, P1295. FIX INCLUDES AN UPDATE TO PCM AND A NEW THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR. PCM UPDATE CAN ONLY BE DONE AT DEALERSHIP AND IS REQUIRED FOR CORRECTING. *TR
RIGHT REAR OUTER BRAKE PAD SEIZED IN THE PAD HOLDER, GRINDING THE ROTOR. DEALER REPAIRED THE BRAKES AND CHARGED ME $ 400.00 EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE FRONT PADS WERE ONLY 50% WORN AND THEY DO MOST OF THE STOPPING. NOW HYUNDAI DEALER SAYS THAT THE HYUNDAI SONATA VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE REAR BRAKES CLEANED AND LUBRICATED EVERY 15,000 TO 20,000 MILES AT MY EXPENSE, TO PREVENT "LOCK UP". HYUNDAI DOES NOT MENTION THIS TYPE OF MAINTENANCE ANYWHERE IN IT'S MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE. AFTER CHECKING ON THE WEB, I FIND THAT THIS IS A COMMON SAFETY PROBLEM AMONG HYUNDAI OWNERS WHO ARE BEING RIPPED OFF BY HYUNDAI WHO REFUSES TO REPAIR THIS DEFECT UNDER WARRANTY OR RECALL THE FAULTY BRAKE CALIPERS. I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA AND MILEAGE IS 90% HIGHWAY, SO THERE IS MINIMAL USAGE OF THE BRAKE COMPARED TO CITY DWELLERS, YET THE BRAKES FAILED PREMATURELY. *TR
ON APRIL 15, 2011 I TOOK MY CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR IT'S ANNUAL INSPECTION. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED 2 NEW TIRES IN ORDER TO PASS THE INSPECTION AND THAT THE REMAINING TWO WEREN'T IN GREAT SHAPE. I DECIDED TO GO AHEAD AND PURCHASE 4 NEW TIRES AND WAS IMMEDIATELY QUOTED A PRICE. I ASSUMED THE TIRES WOULD BE THE SAME AS WHAT WAS ON THE CAR, MICHELINS. I DIDN'T ASK AND THEY DIDN'T SAY. MY MISTAKE. I RODE OUT WITH 4 MASTERCRAFT AVENGER TOURING 215/60/16V TIRES. I DIDN'T MAKE A NOT OF THE DOT NUMBER BUT THE MANUFACTURE DATE I WAS 2610. ON JUNE 1, 2011 THE FRONT LEFT TIRE BLEW OUT WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. THERE WAS A VERY LOUD POP AND THE TIRE WAS IMMEDIATELY FLAT. AT 60 MILES AN HOUR I AM GRATEFUL THAT I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OVER TO THE LEFT SHOULDER. EVEN SO, THAT TRAFFIC FLYING BY WHILE I WAITED FOR HELP WAS SCARY. VDOT OFFERS ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE ON THE HIGHWAYS AND I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL TO THEM FOR BEING THERE TO CHANGE MY TIRE. I TOOK THE TIRE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULDN'T DETERMINE WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE BLOW OUT. THEY REPLACED THE TIRE. ON AUGUST 11, 2011 THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE BLEW OUT. BY THE GRACE OF GOD I HAD TAKEN THE DAY OFF WORK AND WASN'T TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE. I WAS ON A CITY STREET TRAVELING AT 35 MPH. VEHICLE MILEAGE WAS 56,858 SO THE TIRES HAD ABOUT 4133 MILES ON THEM FOR THE SECOND BLOW OUT. THE DEALERSHIP WASN'T GOING TO HELP ME THIS TIME AND I WAS LOOKING TO REPLACE ALL THE TIRES. I NO LONGER TRUST THE TIRES AND MY LIFE AND THE LIVES OF THOSE AROUND ME ARE WORTH FAR MORE THAN THE PRICE OF NEW TIRES. AUGUST 13, 2011 I PURCHASED SOME MICHELINS AT A WHOLESALE CLUB WHO OFFER WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE. I BELIEVE THERE IS A SERIOUS DEFECT IN THE MASTERCRAFT TIRES THAT WILL EVENTUALLY COST SOMEONE THEIR LIFE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE BRAKES ENGAGED INDEPENDENTLY AND WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON THE DRIVER'S CONSOLE IS CONTINUING TO STAY ON. SQUIRMING ON THE DRIVER'S SEAT, ON OCCASION, WOULD CAUSE THE LIGHT TO TURN OFF. THE LIGHT SEEM TO STAY ON WITHOUT AN OBVIOUS REASON. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR FELL DOWN WHILE DRIVING AND WILL NOT STAY IN THE PREVIOUS LOCKED POSITION. INTERNET SEARCHES SHOW MANY OTHER DRIVERS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE AND ALL BEING TOLD THAT A REPAIR OUT OF WARRANTY IS OVER $200 FOR A VISOR. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING FROM VELCRO (WORKS UNTIL IT GET HOT AND THEN FALLS OFF) TO BUNGEE CORDS, RUBBER BANDS, AND EVEN A MAGNET. WHEN YOU DO NEEDS THE VISOR TO PROTECT FROM THE SUN ALL OF THESE TEMP FIXES PREVENT THE SAFE SWITCH TO FLIPPING DOWN THE VISOR. AT FIRST YOU COULD POSITION THE VISOR TO BLOCK THE SUN NOW IT JUST HANGS STRAIGHT DOWN.
THE WHEELS ARE SHOWING AN EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT OF RUST. I HAVE OWNED OVER TWELVE CARS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN RUST ON ANY WHEELS. THIS ONE HAS SHOWN RUST FROM 2009 AND IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I AM CONCERNED IF THIS WILL EFFECT THE SAFETY AND STABILITY OF THE WHEEL STRUCTURE. ARE THESE WHEELS CONSTRUCTED WITH THE SAME TYPE OF MATERIALS THAT THE CURRENT INVESTIGATION OF THE 2006- 2008 HYUNDAI SONATA'S BUMPER/STRUCTURAL RUST ISSUES? ARE THE WHEELS ALSO UNDER INVESTIGATION LIKE THE UNDERCARRIAGE? *TR
I AM WRITING TO COMPLAIN THAT BOTH OF MY SUN VISORS IN MY 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA WILL NOT STAY IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION. FROM RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM IT SOUNDS LIKE I AM AMONG THOUSANDS OF HYUNDAI SONATA OWNERS HAVING THE VERY SAME ISSUE. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THIS ITEM IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY, OR EXTENDED WARRANTY, AND THE COST WILL BE OVER $100 EACH! THIS IS RIDICULOUS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND I BELIEVE THAT IT SHOULD BE A COVERED ITEM, OR BETTER YET, IT SHOULD BE A RECALLED DEFECT!! THANK YOU. *JS
BOTH MY 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA'S SUN VISORS HAVE NOW BROKE. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS SEVERAL YEARS AGO ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, AFTER WHICH, THE VISOR WOULD NOT STAY UP AND WOULD FALL IN THE VISION OF THE PASSENGER. JUST THIS MONTH, HOWEVER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THIS IS VERY HAZARDOUS, ESPECIALLY IF IT WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE TRAVELING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WITH THE ASSEMBLY OF THE VISORS, WHICH CRACK AT THE ELBOW WHICH IS USED TO MOVE THE VISOR AROUND AS NEEDED. AFTER THIS HAPPENS THE VISOR THEN WILL NOT STAY UP WHEN RETURNED TO THE ORIGINAL POSITION. *TR
I OWN A 2007 SONATA. ON MARCH 5, 2011, OR THERE ABOUT, THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE FZO CUSHION IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. WAS NOT WARRANTED AND THE REPAIR COST $1120. AIR BAGS WOULD NOT DEPLOY UNLESS THIS WAS REPAIRED. *TR

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE HE WAS ADVISED THAT BECAUSE THE DOOR HANDLE WAS DESIGNED FROM PLASTIC, THE COLD WEATHER WOULD CAUSE THE PLASTIC TO BREAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

BOTH VISORS ON MY 2007 SONATA DO NOT STAY IN PLACE, I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI AND THEY ARE UNSYMPATHETIC TO MY SITUATION DUE TO THE MILEAGE, 72,000, OUT OF WARRANTY. ALSO, BOTH OF MY REAR DOOR HANDLES HAVE BROKEN. I HAVE TO REACH AROUND TO INSIDE OF DOOR TO OPEN REAR DOOR. *TR

THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR; HOWEVER, AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ADVISED HER THAT THE OIL SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE OIL SENSOR WAS REPLACED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 93,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I HAVE A 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA AND I AM EXPERIENCING BAD ODOR COMING FROM THE AC UNIT. WHILE TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY ENTRANCE RAMP, THE GLASS OF MY MOON ROOF "EXPLODED" SPONTANEOUSLY. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT (APPROXIMATELY 12:00 PM EST), THE TEMPERATURE WAS AROUND 30 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT AND THERE WERE NO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS, I WAS TRAVELING UNDER NO OVERPASSES, AND THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. I NOTICED NO OBJECTS STRIKING MY CAR BEFORE OR AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, MY PASSENGERS AND I ONLY HEARD A NOISE THAT WE AGREED SOUNDED LIKE A GUN SHOT COMING FROM ABOVE THE VEHICLE. WHILE OPERATING MY 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA, I EXPERIENCED SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION (SUA) WHICH RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT OF MODERATE PROPERTY DAMAGE AND NO INJURIES. I HAD PULLED TO A CURBSIDE TO PARK, AND HAD STOPPED APPROXIMATELY 8 FEET BEHIND A LARGE SUV. AS I BEGAN TO RAISE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL, THE ENGINE STARTED TO ACCELERATE. I APPLIED THE BRAKES WHICH INITIALLY BEGAN TO HOLD THE CAR WHICH WAS STARTING TO MOVE FORWARD, BUT AS THE ACCELERATION INCREASED, THE BRAKES BECAME UNABLE TO HOLD THE CAR, AND IT LURCHED FORWARD AND STRUCK THE UNOCCUPIED SUV. I'VE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT THE HYDRAULIC BREAKING SYSTEM AND THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLING SYSTEM ARE INVERSELY CONNECTED TO THE VACUUM GENERATED BY THE CAR'S ENGINE WHICH MEANS THAT BRAKING POWER DECREASES AS THROTTLE INCREASES. CAUSE OF THE SUA HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED. AFTER I GOT THE CAR REPAIRED, I TOOK IT TO HYUNDAI AND THEY WERE VERY CONCILIATORY BUT AFTER CHECKING IT FOR AN HOUR, STATE THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO RECREATE THE CONDITION AND THAT THEY DID A COMPLETE SAFETY CHECK AND SCANNED ALL THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS TO NO AVAIL. THIS FIRST HAPPENED IN 2010, WHEN THE MILEAGE WAS 34089, AND THEN AGAIN IN 2011, WHEN THE MILEAGE WAS 40356. THE CAUSE FOR THIS THAT WAS LISTED ON THE REPAIR BILL WAS, SCAN TEST FOUND CODE B1701, BUCKLE ASSEMBLY OPEN SHORT. I WAS AT THE DEALER FOR THE SAME PROBLEM ON 11/11/13, WHEN MY CAR'S MILEAGE WAS 57912. AT THAT TIME, I WAS TOLD BOTH BUCKLES HAD TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION INCIDENT REPORT INCIDENT OCCURRED AT 5:05 PM FRIDAY NOVEMBER 19, 2010 VEHICLE: 2007 HYUNDAI SONATA FROM ABOUT 50 MPH, I CHANGED LANES AND ACCELERATED INTO THE LANE'S TRAFFIC BY PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL AS FAR AS IT WOULD GO. WHEN I PARTIALLY LET UP ON THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING, WITH THE ENGINE ROARING, AND I FOUGHT IT WITH THE BRAKE. I PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE ROARED STILL MORE LOUDLY, SO I PUT IT BACK INTO DRIVE AND USED THE BRAKE MORE WHILE THE ENGINE ROARED AT ITS PREVIOUS RATE, WHICH I SAW ON THE TACHOMETER WAS ABOUT 3000 RPM. THEN AFTER AROUND FIVE SECONDS MORE I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AGAIN; THIS TIME IT DIED DOWN TO NORMAL RPM, AND I COASTED TO A STOP. AFTER ABOUT TWENTY SECONDS I PUT IT BACK INTO DRIVE, AND IT WAS FINE. AT FIRST I WONDERED WHETHER THE ACCELERATOR HAD GOTTEN CAUGHT ON THE STORE-BOUGHT FLOOR MAT, SO WHEN I GOT HOME I EXPERIMENTED WITH IT, NEVER HAVING MOVED THE MAT FROM ITS POSITION DURING THE INCIDENT.
