2009 HUYNDAI SONATA STARTER INSTALLED IN JUNE 2017 BY DEALER AFTER DIAGNOSING A DEFECTIVE STARTER WAS THE REASON FOR A STRANGE SOUND WHEN STARTING THE CAR. IN DECEMBER 2017, THE SAME DEALER STATES THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH IS SENDING A SIGNAL AT THE WRONG TIME AND AS A RESULT, THE SAME SOUND OCCURS. DEALER CLAIMS THAT THE SAME SOUND IS NOT A RESULT OF THE STARTER, BUT THE IGNITION SWITCH.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, THE CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN WITH JERKING AND SHAKING LIKE MOTIONS WHICH WAS VERY DISTRACTING AND CAUSED ME TO BECOME AFRAID IN THE MOVING TRAFFIC. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT SOMETHING WAS GOING WRONG. THEN I GLANCED AT TEMPERATURE GAUGE AND NOTICED IT WAS HEATING UP IN THE RED AND RAN HOT. NOW IT WON'T RUN.
ESC LIGHT ILLUMINATES ONCE THE CAR IS STARTED AND CANNOT BE TURNED OFF BY DEPRESSING THE SWITCH, THIS ALSO SEEMS TO DISABLE THE CRUISE CONTROL.
THE ESC LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR JERKS AS THIS HAPPENS. ONCE IN THIS CONDITION, THE CAR RUNS EXTREMELY ROUGH AND WILL EVEN STALL WHEN STARTING FROM A FULL STOP (STALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION). DURING ONE OCCURRENCE, THE CAR WOULDN'T GO FASTER THAN 25 MPH WHEN GOING UP A SLIGHT INCLINE. I CAN'T TURN OFF ESC; PRESSING THE SWITCH IS IGNORED. IF I TURN OFF/ON THE CAR, THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO GO AWAY FOR A WHILE.
I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM WITH MY ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC). THE "ESC OFF" INDICATOR LAMP BECOMES ILLUMINATED WHILE I AM DRIVING. I AM UNABLE TO TURN IT OFF BY PRESSING THE ESC BUTTON. WHEN THE ESC OFF INDICATOR IS ILLUMINATED, THIS ALSO CAUSES THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT FUNCTION, CREATING THE RISK OF AN ACCIDENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE IGNITION SWITCH SEIZED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TYSINGER HYUNDAI IN HAMPTON, VIRGINIA TO BE REPAIRED, BUT THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. IN ADDITION, THE DEALER STATED THAT A LOCKSMITH WOULD NEED TO UNLOCK THE IGNITION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 80,248. UPDATED 10/18/17*LJ *TR
VEHICLE SITTING IN DRIVE WAY. GEAR SHIFT WONT WONT MOVE,AND IGNITION KEY WON'T TURN TO START ENGINE .SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH IGNITION SWITCH
EMISSIONS WARNING HAD BEEN ON FOR A SHORT TIME. 20 MINUTES AFTER A BIG PUFF OF SMOKE, THE CAR DIED AND THE MECHANIC SAYS THE MOTOR IS LOCKED AND IT WILL NEED A NEW ENGINE. VERY LITTLE WARNING OR POOR CAR PERFORMANCE.
THE ESC OFF LIGHT COMES ON AND PUSHING THE ON/OFF SWITCH DOES NOT PUT IT OUT. IF I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RE START, THE DASH LIGHT GOES OUT. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS USUALLY HAPPENS GOING 30-40MPH AND I FEEL A SLIGHT JERK IN THE CAR THEN IT COMES ON. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AROUND 60MPH. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS 07/12/17 DRIVING AROUND 30MPH.
ESC LIGHT WILL COME ON AT VARIOUS TIMES AND ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF. WILL GET CHECK ENGINE LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY WITH THIS BUT NOT ALWAYS. THIS MAY OCCUR GOING 20 MPH ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS OR GOING 70 MPH ON HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. NO RHYME OR REASON FOR IT GOING OFF. MAY BE DRY OR WET PAVEMENT WARM OR COLD OUT. HEN ENGINE DIES AT HIGH SPEED MAY START BACK UP UPON DECELERATION OR MAY NEED TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF ROAD. SOMETIMES RESETS UPON RESTARTING THE FIRST TIME BUT OTHER TIMES IT TAKES A FEW TIMES OF TURNING ENGINE OFF THEN ON.
EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES BREAK WHEN OPENING THE DOOR TO ENTER THE CAR WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED. CURRENTLY THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE EXTERIOR HANDLE AND THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE HANDLE HAS BROKEN.
WE PURCHASED A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA FROM VOSS HYUNDAI IN CENTERVILLE, OHIO ON 5/21/2009. ON 10/14/14 WE TOOK THE CAR IN FOR AN 'IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL' WHICH STATED THAT THEY CHANGED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH BECAUSE IT COULD BE DEFECTIVE AND CAUSE SEVERAL PROBLEMS, ONE OF WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE ILLUMINATION OF THE ESC (ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL) LAMP AMONG OTHER THINGS. EIGHT DAYS AGO OUR ESC LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND TOOK THE CAR TO VOSS THIS MORNING ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CHARGED $103 TO EVEN FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, NOT TO MENTION THE CHARGES FOR ACTUALLY FIXING A SAFETY RECALL PROBLEM WHICH I AM SURE WOULD BE EXPENSIVE. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SAFETY PROBLEM RELATED TO THE PREVIOUS RECALL WORK. THEY MAY HAVE REPLACED A PERFECTLY GOOD BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WITH A FAULTY ONE. THIS CAR HAS 12,875 MILES ON IT AND WE ONLY USE IT OCCASIONALLY. IT IS IN A GARAGE AT ALL TIMES AND THIS MORNING WAS THE FIRST TIME IT HAS BEEN OUT IN RAIN. WE HAD NOT BOUGHT A NEW CAR IN MANY YEARS AND BOUGHT THIS ONE BECAUSE OF THE GREAT 10 YEAR WARRANTY ON IT. APPARENTLY I SHOULD HAVE SAT IN THE SHOWROOM AND ASKED TO READ THE FINE PRINT ON THEIR WARRANTY BEFORE BUYING IT. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE VERY SAME PROBLEM WITH ALL MODELS OF HYUNDAIS. SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED STABILITY AND STEERING PROBLEMS RELATED TO THIS DEFECT IN DESIGN OR PARTS WHICH COULD EASILY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. WE REALLY LIKED THE CAR UNTIL THIS HAPPENED, THE DEALERSHIP 'NOT SO MUCH' NOW. I REALLY THINK THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD ADMIT THAT THERE IS A SAFETY PROBLEM AND FIX THE PROBLEM CORRECTLY FOR THE MANY OWNERS WHO ARE HAVING THIS HAPPEN TO THEM, NOT JUST A $10 BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH AFTER A $103 DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE.

THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WOULD HAVE TO OCCUR WHILE AT THE DEALER IN ORDER TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS INVALID. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,788.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD NOT ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE FORWARD WHEN DEPRESSED AND THAT THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. PACIFICO HYUNDAI IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.
STEERING IS LOCKING UP IN TURNS WHILE TURNING ON THE HIGHWAY! THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS! JUST CALLED DEALERSHIP & THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THIS HOWEVER IF YOU SEARCH STEERING PROBLEMS ON THE INTERNET IT'S A VERY KNOWN PROBLEM FOR THESE CARS! SOMETHING NEEDS DONE!
FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SEATBELT LOCK IS STICKING. VERY HARD TO BUCKLE BELT INTO PLACE.
MY CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN KEPT IN GARAGE. ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO I ADVISED MY DEALER THAT CRACKS WERE DEVELOPING ON MY DASHBOARD. I WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE IT IS OVER AIRBAGS. I WAS TOLD I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS. I SEE OTHER CONSUMERS WITH SAME MODEL HAVING SAME PROBLEMS. I BEEN RETIRED LAST 3 YEARS AND HAVE DRIVEN MY CAR LESS THAN 5 THOUSAND MILES, CAR IS KEPT IN GARAGE AND THE CRACK HAS NOW SPREAD TO DRIVER'S SIDE OF DASHBOARD! THIS IS MY SECOND OFFICIAL COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS. I DROVE THROUGH A LARGE PUDDLE AND THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON, THE CAR SLOWED DOWN BUT RECOVERED AFTER THE LIGHT WENT OFF. I HAVE LOOKED AROUND AND MANY HYUNDAI CUSTOMERS, WITH DIFFERENT MODELS AND YEARS COMPLAIN OF THE SAME ISSUE. IS ANYTHING BEING DONE ABOUT THIS YET? OR DO DRIVERS HAVE TO DIE FIRST. MY HEADLIGHTS KEEP BURNING OUT. I HAVE HAD TO CHANGE THEM AT LEAST 3-4 TIMES PER YEAR. AFTER THE MOST RECENT CHANGE THEY BLEW BACK IN WITHIN TWO WEEKS. I HAVE TO DRIVE WITH MY HIGH BEAMS ON AT ALL TIMES.
I OWN A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE OPERATING I NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN SPEED, COASTING, FUEL ECONOMY, AND BRAKING DISTANCE. UPON PARKING MY CAR I SMELLED BURNING BRAKES. AS I WALKED PAST THE DRIVER REAR TIRE I COULD FEEL THE HEAT RADIATING FROM THE TIRE. I DIDN'T DARE TOUCH THE RIM FOR FEAR IT WOULD BURN ME. DIAGNOSIS REVEALED A SEIZED REAR DRIVER BRAKE CALIPER PISTON. THIS CAUSED RUINED THE REAR BRAKES AND PUT UNDUE STRESS ON THE FRONT BRAKES. I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE BRAKING SYSTEM AS THEY HAD ALL BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD. I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH COVERED THE REAR CALIPER REPLACEMENT BUT NOTHING ELSE. BURNING THROUGH BRAKES IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVEN'T NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000.
WAS BACKING CAR OUT OF OUR GARAGE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON (SOLID AND NOT BLINKING) SO DROVE CAR BACK INTO OUR GARAGE AND TURNED IT OFF. NO UNUSUAL SOUNDS OBSERVED WHEN BACKING OUT OR PULLING BACK IN TO GARAGE. FROM THAT POINT ON THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER START. CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. 110,618 MILES AND WAS TOLD ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS PERMANENT TIMING CHAIN HAD JUMPED TIME. DEALER COULD NOT PROVIDE ANY REASON WHY THE CHAIN WOULD JUMP TIME. LEARNED THAT RECALL EXISTS FOR NEWER MODELS OF SONATAS THAT HAVE SAME ENGINE THAT HAVE ISSUE WITH INTERNAL OIL DISTRIBUTION TROUBLE THAT SEIZES ENGINE CAUSING TIMING CHAIN TO JUMP. ENGINE REPLACED BY DEALERSHIP WITH USED 62,000 MI ENGINE.
REAR BRAKE CALIPERS HAVE SEIZED AT LEAST 7 TIMES, CAUSING ME TO NEED TO REPLACE THEM. I'M AT 115,000 MILES AND HAVE HAD THE LEFT ONE SEIZE, DESTROYING THE ROTOR AND PAD 4 TIMES, AND THE RIGHT ONE SEIZE 3 TIMES (ONCE RECURRING WITHIN 15,000 MILES OF REPLACEMENT). THE CAR HAS BEEN REPAIRED AT DIFFERENT SHOPS, BUT THE PROBLEM KEEPS RECURRING. FIRST TIME OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTER 30,000 MILES. OCCURS EVERY 1-2 YEARS SINCE THEN. MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE IS NOW (CAR IS BEING REPAIRED THIS MORNING, LEFT REAR CALIPER/ROTOR/PAD). NOTICED MASSIVE SHIMMYING THIS TIME. PREVIOUS TIMES HAVE BEEN NOTICED FROM: GRINDING NOISE, CAR WON'T ACCELERATE OVER 10 MPH (LOCKED IN ENGAGED BRAKE MODE THAT TIME), AND SEVERE BUCKING WHILE BEING DRIVEN.
WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A DEEP PUDDLE (3-4 INCHES), THE BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON AS THE ENGINE STALLS AND I LOSE ALL POWER ACCESSORIES. ONCE I RESTART THE ENGINE, THE BATTERY LIGHT GOES OUT AFTER A SHORT TIME AND ALL IS GOOD AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR I'VE HAD THE CAR. I AM CONCERNED THAT IF IT HAPPENS AT THE WRONG TIME, I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO STEER AWAY FROM TROUBLE.
ENGINE OIL LEAKS SINCE 2 YEARS AGO
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED AND MADE AN ABNORMAL SOUND. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE CONNECTING ROD WAS DEFECTIVE AND THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE); HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN ALABAMA. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 104,000.
STOP LAMP SWITCH REPLACEMENT. ON 01/14/17 I HAD AN APPOINTMENT AT PLAZA HYUNDAI LOCATED AT 2700 NOSTRAND AVE, BROOKLYN NY 11210 TO REPLACE MY STOP LAMP SWITCH. THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART IN STOCK AT THAT TIME. THE PART WAS ORDERED ON 01/14/2017 AND AS OF THIS WRITING (02/17/2017) THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE PART AND HAVE NO ESTIMATED TIME OR ARRIVAL ON THE PART. NO ONE EVEN NOTIFIED ME THAT THE CAMPAIGN WAS NOT COMPLETED. I HAD TO COME BACK IN THE FOLLOWING DAY 01/15/2017 BECAUSE MY BREAK LIGHTS WERE NOT TURNING OFF. AT THAT TIME THEY ATTEMPTED TO CHARGE ME FOR A DIAGNOSTIC, BUT I ADVISED THE MANAGER THAT I WAS THERE LESS THAN 24 HOURS AGO TO ADDRESS THE STOP LAMP SWITCH, WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSING THE ISSUE. THEY TOLD ME AT THAT TIME THAT THE PART WAS STILL ON ORDER. THEY REFUSE TO GIVE ME AN ETA. I CALLED HYUNDAI'S CORPORATE OFFICE, AND THEY COULD NOT GET AN ANSWER FROM PLAZA AUTO EITHER. THIS IS A SERIOUS RECALL AS IT EFFECTS MY ABILITY TO SIGNAL THAT I'M BREAKING. I WILL ATTEMPT TO GO TO ANOTHER SERVICE DEPARTMENT OR REMEDY MYSELF, BUT I THINK THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
ESC LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY SOMETIMES ENGINE HESITATION IS INVOLVED. THIS HAPPENS AT VARYING SPEEDS, VARYING OPERATING TEMPS, AND VARYING WEATHER/TEMP CONDITIONS.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODE READS INTAKE VALVE CIRCUIT HAS LOW VOLTAGE. NOTICED REDUCED GAS MILEAGE ECONOMY AND POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
FRONT ENGINE VALVE COVER GASKET LEAKED OIL ONTO ALTERNATOR CAUSING IT TO BECOME DAMAGED, WHICH LED TO POOR TRANSMISSION SHIFTING AND THEN COMPLETE LOSS OF ALL ELECTRICAL POWER.
TL* THE CONTACT WAS REPAIRING A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE IGNITION WOULD INADVERTENTLY RESTART WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. THE STARTER MOTOR COULD BE HEARD RE-ENGAGING. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO DRIFT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHIFTED THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL, AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE CORRECTLY. AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF NORMAL OPERATION THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A NEW KEY CYLINDER AND IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE INSTALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000. UPDATED 04/12/17 *LJ *AS
OUR CAR, A 2009 HYUNDAI SONOTA, HAS HAD THE SAME ENGINE ISSUES AS THE HYUNDAI RECALL SET FORTH ON APRIL OF 2017. WE WERE TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP, WE HAD TO HAVE THE ENGINE REPLACED. THE SYMPTOMS OF THE CAR ARE IDENTICAL TO THOSE IN THE 2017 RECALL, BUT WE WERE TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP, OUR VEHICLE'S VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. WE MAINTAINED THE CAR PROPERLY AS SET BY THE DEALERSHIP (OIL CHANGES, ETC.).
THE LIGHT TURNS ON AND YOU TRY TO PUSH THE SWITCH TO IT BACK ON BUT IT DOES NOTHING. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME. THE FIRST I HAD SOME SENSOR REPLACED BUT ITS BACK ON DOING THE SAME THING AGAIN
THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS NOT FUNCTIONING/BROKEN CAUSING THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO STAY ON AND ESC BUTTON IS NOT FUNCTIONING.
I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 75 WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. THE CAR LOST SPEED GRADUALLY FROM 60 MPH TO 10 MPH. FORTUNATELY I WAS NEAR AN EXIT AND WAS ABLE TO EXIT AND STOP AT A HOTEL PARKING LOT. THIS WAS A FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE SINCE OTHER CARS WERE SPEEDING AROUND ME AT 70+ MPH, THEN CUTTING IN FRONT OF ME TO EXIT THE INTERSTATE. THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER AT LEAST THREE TIMES BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH NO OTHER RESULT. NO REASON WAS FOUND FOR THE PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO WAS CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND SO I'M WITHOUT A CAR FOR THE WEEKEND AND WILL HAVE TO MISS WORK TOMORROW. UNKNOWN CAUSE. I'M NOT ABLE TO SCAN DOCUMENTS.
CAR STARTED AS USUAL AND I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET GETTING READY TO GET ON THE HIGHWAY. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR WOULD ONLY GO ABOUT 20 MPH AND REACH 1000 RPM. IT DIED SHORTLY THEREAFTER ON THE HIGHWAY FRONTAGE ROAD. ALL OF THE LIGHTS FOR ABS, BRAKES, CHECK ENGINE ETC. CAME ON BUT THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS WOULD NOT WORK SO I HAD TO KEEP PUMPING THE BRAKES SO NOBODY WOULD RUN INTO THE BACK END OF MY CAR. IT WOULD NOT RESTART SO I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. DEALER STATED VALVE COVER GASKET HAD LEAKED OIL ONTO THE ALTERNATOR AND RUINED IT. THAT IN TURN RUINED THE BATTERY. CAR WAS REPAIRED FOR $1400 INCLUDING THE TOW AND A RENTAL CAR. AFTER LOOKING AT HYUNDAI RECALLS, I NOTICED THE ONE FOR THE 2009 VERA CRUZ (NHTSA# 14V415000) IN WHICH 61,122 UNITS WERE RECALLED FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. IN RESEARCHING THE AFFECTED VALVE COVER GASKET, I FOUND THE SAME ONE WAS USED ON MY 3.3L ENGINE THAT WAS LISTED AS DEFECTIVE ON THE 3.8L VERA CRUZ ENGINE. IF THAT PART WAS DEFECTIVE ON THAT VEHICLE, WHY WAS THE SCOPE OF THIS RECALL NOT EXTENDED TO COVER ALL POSSIBLE VEHICLES THAT COULD BE AFFECTED? I WOULD LIKE THE COST OF REPAIRS REFUNDED TO ME SINCE HYUNDAI OBVIOUSLY KNEW THIS PART WAS DEFECTIVE BUT DIDN'T ISSUE A RECALL TO COVER ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES. *TR
I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR SINCE JULY 2014. I PURCHASED THE CAR WITH 54K MILES. I CURRENTLY HAVE 107K MILES AND IT'S OCTOBER 2016.I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY BRAKES 4 TIMES, SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS FAIL CAUSING BRAKES TO LOCK WHILE DRIVING PRODUCING SIGNIFICANT HEAT AND DAMAGE TO THE BRAKE COMPONENTS. THE PROBLEM ALSO CAUSE A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF FUEL ECONOMY. IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE AND A RECALL HAS BEEN PUT IN PLACE STARTING IN MODEL YEAR 2011. WALLACE AUTOMOTIVE IN STUART, FLORIDA 34997 WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND TOOK PICTURES OF THE DASHBOARD. AT THE REQUEST OF HYUNDAI, THE DEALER DID NOT PERFORM A REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
SUN VISOR WILL NOT STAY UP IT KEEPS FALLING DOWN OBSTRUCTING MY VISION WHILE DRIVING. *TR
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED AND MADE AN ABNORMAL SOUND. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE CONNECTING ROD WAS DEFECTIVE AND THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V568000 (ENGINE); HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN ALABAMA. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO USE THE CAR SINCE.
PURCHASED MY 2009 SONATA IN FEBRUARY 2009, BY MID JULY I HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR BRAKES. I WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW AND ONLY HAD ABOUT 5000 MILES. I WAS TOLD THAT I WAS REQUIRED TO CHECK THE BRAKES EVERY 3500 MILES AND IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, NOT EVEN THE 5 YEAR BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. IT IS NOW 2016 I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY REAR BRAKE CALIPERS, PADS AND ROTORS EVERY 6 MONTHS AT A COST OF OVER $400 EVERY TIME. THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF GRINDING, HEAT AND MASSIVE VIBRATION IN THE REAR WHILE BRAKING TO THIS POINT. I HAVE RETURNED MY CAR FOR BOTH CURRENT RECALLS (NOT APPLICABLE TO BRAKES). WITH SO MANY MODELS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES, ITS VERY DISAPPOINTING THAT HYUNDAI WILL NOT REPAIR THEIR FAULTY ENGINEERING AND THE NHTSA HAS NOT INVESTIGATED THIS MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH BRAKING SYSTEMS IN THESE CARS.
ON 10/08/2009 MY 209 HYUNDAI SONATA WENT INTO AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. AS SOON AS I PUT THE CAR INTO DRIVE IT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK AND I WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL. I WAS ON A NARROW DIRT ROAD WITH LITTLE LIMITED OPTIONS AS TO WHERE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. I MISSED A BOULDER, GARAGE, AND TREE BEFORE HITTING THE SIDE OF A HOUSE. THE AMBULANCE WAS CALLED AND I WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE LOCAL EMERGENCY ROOM. I HAD A CONCUSSION, FRACTURED KNEE ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF BRUISES AND ABRASIONS. THE EMTS TOLD ME HOW LUCKY IF WAS SINCE THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.. AN INTERNET SEARCH, INCLUDING YOUR WEBSITE, NOTES THESE PROBLEMS GOING BACK SEVERAL YEARS. TOYOTA HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND DID A RECALL. MY INJURIES WILL EXCEED THE LIMIT OF MY INSURANCE AND I WILL HAVE TO PURCHASE A CAR. I KNOW HOW LUCKY I WAS TO WALK AWAY. I AM SURE OTHERS HAD MORE SERIOUS INJURIES AND HIGHER EXPENSES. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO FORCE HYUNDAI TO DO THE RIGHT THING?
A FEW MILE FROM HOME ON RURAL HIGHWAY DRIVERS SIDE REAR BRAKES SUDDENLY SEIZED LURCHING THE VEHICLE, TRANSMISSION DOWN SHIFTED, ENGINE RPM WENT WAY UP. UPON ARRIVING AT HOME, BRAKES WERE SMOKING HOT AND ON INSPECTION BRAKE PADS AND METAL ALMOST GONE, ROTOR HAD THINNED TO 1/4 ", AND METAL POWDER WAS ALL OVER THE RIM, SIDE AND REAR OF CAR.
WHILE DRIVING (THE CAR WAS IN MOTION) THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR HAS A PROPENSITY TO DROP, BLOCKING THE VISION FROM THE DRIVER. THE SUN VISOR NOW DOES NOT STAY IN AN UP-RIGHT POSITION. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE, AS THE SUN VISOR BLOCKS YOUR VISION.
SUN VISOR ON DRIVER SIDE IS BROKEN (WON'T STAY UP) AND THE SUN VISOR DROPS DOWN VERTICALLY BLOCKING THE DRIVER'S FIELD OF VIEW. THIS PROBLEM WAS PART OF A RECALL IN THE TWO PRIOR YEAR MODELS (2007 AND 2008), BUT HYUNDAI REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM PERSISTS IN THE 2009 YEAR MODEL
WHEN START THE ENGINEERING AND DRIVE FOR 2-3 SECONDS, THE ESC OFF LIGHT WILL LIGHT AND STAYS ON, WILL NOT GO OFF. I HEARD IT HAD RECALL ON 2006-2008 MODEL FOR THIS, BUT NOT 2009MODELS.
UPON ACCELERATING UP AN ENTRANCE RAMP TO THE HIGHWAY, CAR ACCELERATED AT AN UNREASONABLE RATE OF SPEED TRIED USING BRAKES, BUT THEY WERE GONE. CAR HIT SPEEDS OF 60/65 MPH FOR MORE THAN 3 MILES ON A TURNPIKE. PARKING BRAKE DID NOT WORK, BRAKE PEDAL WAS DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND I COULD NOT CONTROL THE SPEED OF THE AUTO. AFTER TRAVELING MORE THAN 3 MILES, IN THE SHOULDER, I PUT THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL AND THE CAR BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN AND FINALLY STOP. TOWED FROM TURNPIKE TO DEALERSHIP. KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS WITH THE 2006 MODEL, BUT IS THERE ANYTHING SIMILAR TO MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE SONATA 2009.
