IN APRIL 2013 MY REAR BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED FOR INSPECTION. THE RIGHT REAR SIDE WAS DOWN TO NOTHING, IT WAS RUBBING BARE METAL TO BARE METAL, BRAKES AGAIN ROTORS. THE LEFT SIDE WAS ALSO MORE WORN THAN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN, BUT NOT AS BAD AS THE RIGHT SIDE. IN JULY 2013 THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN. THE RIGHT REAR SIDE WAS RUBBING METAL TO METAL, BRAKES AGAINST ROTOR. THE LEFT SIDE WAS FINE. THE BRAKES PARTS (CALIPER) WERE WORKING APPROPRIATELY. IN OCTOBER 2013 THE RIGHT REAR BRAKES BEGAN SQUEALING AND APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS AFTER THE SQUEALING BEGAN IT STARTED MAKING THE SAME GRINDING NOISE AS IT DID THE PREVIOUS TIMES AND THE BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THIS TIME, THE CALIPER ALSO HAD TO BE REPLACED. MY REAR BRAKES HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED THREE TIMES IN 8 MONTHS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE IN TRAFFIC, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND ESC LIGHT CAME ON AND IT WAS LIKE THE GAS DOESN'T WANT TO GO TO THE ENGINE BUT THE CAR DIDN'T DIE AND MOVED AT NO MORE THAN 5 MILES AN HOUR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST4 MONTHS AND IT REALLY HASN'T BEEN AN ISSUE BECAUSE NORMALLY YOU CAN SHUT THE CAR OFF FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND TURN IT BACK ON AND IT'S FINE, HOWEVER IT IS A MAJOR ISSUE IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO GET YOUR VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY AND OUT OF HARMS WAY. IT HAS OCCURRED OVER 4 TIMES AND IT HAS RECENTLY HAPPENED TWICE IN ONE WEEK. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THAT HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND OWNERS CAN EITHER PAY TO GET THE SENSOR "BOX" CLEANED OUT, OR REPAIRED WHICH COSTS IN THE AREA OF $500.00. THEY KNOW IT IS THE SENSOR "BOX", AND THAT IS FLAWED. WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMER HAVE TO PAY FOR A DEFECT FROM THE MANUFACTURER. *TR
HEADLIGHTS DIM BUT DON'T AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF WHEN TURNING OFF THE CAR THUS DRAINING BATTERY LEAVING DEAD CAR. *TR
WHEN DRIVING MY CAR WILL JERK LIKE IT IS SHIFTING ROUGH. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BRAKES GRABBING BUT WHEN I GOOGLED IT I READ THAT IT COULD BE ECM AND TCM SOFTWARE PROBLEM. IT JERKS SOMETIMES SO BADLY THAT IT FEELS LIKE I HAVE BUMPED INTO SOMETHING. CALLED DEALER BUT WAS TOLD THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT IT IS PROBABLY AN UPDATE NEEDED TO THE ECM AND TCM SOFTWARE AND IT COULD COST $200. IF THAT IS THE CASE IT SHOULD BE SOMETHING THAT HYUNDAI COVERS.
NOTICED THE CAR DOES NOT PULL UP THE STEEP HILL VERY WELL. TOOK TO DEALER WHO SAID TRANSMISSION OIL IS DIRTY AND SMELLS BAD AND IT NEEDS TRANSMISSION FLUSH, RESETTING OF TRANSMISSION SHIFT POINTS, AND FUEL SYSTEM CLEAN . I POINTED OUT THESE ARE NOT PER SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENT AND WAS CONCERNED THE CAR WAS CAUSING THESE PROBLEMS SO EARLY IN ITS USAGE . WILL TAKE IT FOR THE TRANSMISSION FLUSH AS THAT IS WHAT DEALER INSISTS ON BEFORE THEY INFORM ME IF THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE PRESENT. *TR

I BELIEVE THAT THE HYUNDAI SONATA 2009 A HAS A PAINT DEFECT PROBLEM. I NOW HAVE 12 PAINT CHIPS ON THE HOOD WHICH I BELIEVE ARE THE RESULT OF PAINT FLAKING OFF. I DO NOT RECALL ONCE HEARING A ROCK HIT THE HOOD AND YET I HAVE 12 CHIPS AND NOW ONE SIMILAR CHIP NEAR THE TRUNK. THERE ARE NO DENTS THAT WOULD INDICATE ROCKS OR OTHER OBJECTS HITTING THE HOOD. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND SPOKE TO THE MANAGER WHO TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE A RESULT OF NORMAL WEAR. I DO NOT AGREE AND A QUICK LOOK THROUGH THE INTERNET INDICATES THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THE PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS DRIVING THE SONATA WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR LOST ITS FORCE AND WOULDN'T MOVE. WHILE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET I WAS PUSHING THE GAS PEDDLE BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT GO. THE ESC OFF LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AS WELL. I POWERED THE CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON BUT THE CAR STILL DID NOT HAVE A LOT OF FORCE, BUT ENOUGH TO GET TO A NEARBY PARKING LOT. I LEFT THE CAR OFF IN A PARKING LOT FOR ABOUT 5 MIN AND TURNED IT BACK ON. THE ESC LIGHT TURNED OFF, BUT NOT THE CHECK ENGINE. THERE HAVE BEEN SIMILAR PROBLEMS WHERE ITS A SWITCH IN THE BRAKE PEDDLE BUT THAT SHOULD NOT MAKE THE ENTIRE CAR SHUT OFF. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALERSHIP SINCE I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR 2 WEEKS AGO AND NOW I'M WAITING FOR DIAGNOSTICS TO COME BACK. *TR
THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE PAD WAS WORN DOWN PAPER THIN AND CAUSED THE ROTOR TO BE SCORED. AFTER THE ROTOR AND PADS WHERE REPLACED THE SAME PASSENGER READ WHEEL BEGAN TO BURN AND CAUSED A VERY PUNGENT ORDER. LARGE AMOUNTS OF BRAKE DUST ALSO BEGAN TO COLLECT ON THE WHEEL. THIS SAME PROBLEM HAS ALREADY BEEN REPORTED BY OTHERS. *TR
AROUND FEB OF THIS YEAR, MY CAR BATTERY DIED AND I GOT IT REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE. SOON AFTER I STARTED EXPERIENCING AN ADDITIONAL GRINDING NOISE THAT WOULD OCCUR SOMETIMES AFTER START UP. UPON INVESTIGATION, I WAS TOLD IT WAS THE STARTER BY HYUNDAI. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC HOWEVER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE IGNITION SWITCH SELECTOR, THAT IT HAD GONE BAD AND THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HOPE THIS SOLVES THE PROBLEM. *TR
THE BUTTON TO OPEN THE GAS CAP DOES NOT WORK.
I PURCHASED MY 2009 SONATA IN MARCH OF 2012 AT THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, WITH ABOUT 44K ON IT. EVERYTHING WAS CHECKED OFF AND CONFIRMED AS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. A HISTORY REPORT SHOWED THE BRAKES BEING REPLACED LAST AT 41K MILES. I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR ITS 60K CHECKUP AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THE REAR BRAKES ARE SHOT, AND EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE REPLACED...PADS, CALIPERS, ROTORS, ETC. IT HADN'T MADE A GRINDING NOISE OR ANYTHING AT THAT POINT, SO I DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC I USUALLY GO TO. HE CONFIRMED EVERYTHING AND SAID ALL TOLD THE REPAIR IS GOING TO COST ME ROUGHLY $800!!! HE ALSO TOLD ME IT WAS A BIG ISSUE THEY SEE ONLY ON HYUNDAI'S, AND THAT THERE IS NO WAY THE REAR BRAKES SHOULD EVER GO BEFORE THE FRONT BRAKES NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH FORCE THAT IS NEEDED TO BRAKE THE FRONT OF THE CAR COMPARED TO THE REAR. SO DID RESEARCH AND FIND OUT THAT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO REPLACING MY ENTIRE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM EVERY 15-20K MILES. I WILL BE FILING A FORMAL COMPLAIN WITH HYUNDAI AS WELL...MY HOPE IS IF THEY WANT TO KEEP THEIR CUSTOMERS, THEY WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ALL TOO COMMON ISSUE! *TR
IN COLD WEATHER AND WHEN ENGINE IS COLD, WHEN SLOWING DOWN, UPON REACHING 20 MPH, THE CAR WILL JERK VERY ROUGHLY INTO A LOWER GEAR. I TOOK IT TO POHANKA HYUNDAI IN VIRGINIA STATING IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION WHICH THEY COVER FOR UP TO 100,000 MILES AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT COVER IT EVEN THOUGH MY CAR ONLY HAD 70,000 MILES. THIS A PROBLEM WITH SEVERAL CARS ON THE HYUNDAI FORUMS WHERE I INITIALLY RESEARCHED ABOUT MY PROBLEM. POHANKA HYUNDAI STATED IT WAS A SAFETY BULLETIN ONLY AND NOT A RECALL, SO I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR TO THE TRANSMISSION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH THE BRAKES ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD IN ACCELERATION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE, SHE SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED IT RESUMED NORMAL FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER HOWEVER, THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 33,200.
HEARD NOISE FROM BRAKES AND THOUGHT IT WAS FRONT PADS.CHANGED FRONT PADS BUT IT DID NOT SOLVE PROBLEM. TOOK BACK TIRES OFF TO CHECK BRAKES AND MUCH TO MY SURPRISE THERE WAS HARDLY ANY PADS LEFT. CHANGED PADS AND THAT STOPPED THE NOISE ONLY TO HAVE TO BRING MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE DO TO THE FACT THAT THE CALIPERS WERE NOT RELEASING. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS AND SAID THAT CALIPERS WERE BAD. THEY HAD TO PUT NEW BRAKES ON(MINE WERE ONLY ON A WEEK) TURN THE ROTORS AND SAID MY BRAKE FLUID WAS CONTAMINATED. 10 YR 100000 MILE WARRANTY PLUS BOUGHT EXTENDED WARRANTY AND I STILL HAD TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THEY CALL NORMAL WEAR. NOTHING NORMAL ABOUT THAT!ALSO WANTED TO DRAIN OLD BRAKE FLUID AND CHARGE 129.99 FOR SOMETHING THEY HAD TO DO WHEN THEY PUT NEW CALIPERS ON ANY WAY BY BLEEDING THE LINES. THEN TO CHARGE 110.00 TO TURN THE ROTORS. I ARGUED AND EVERYONE I TALKED TO SAID THIS IS GUIDE LINES WE HAVE TO FOLLOW. I CANT BELIEVE THERE IS NOT A RECALL ON THIS .I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS COMPLAINED ABOUT BACK BRAKES CAUSING PROBLEMS ON SONATAS. THEY DO NOT COVER PARTS FROM NORMAL WEAR IF CALIPERS DIDN'T MALFUNCTION I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO HAVE ANYTHING DONE TO MY CAR. THEY DENY,DENY,DENY UNTIL SOMEONE GETS KILLED. COULD BE ANOTHER TOYOTA ORDEAL! *TR

THE DRIVER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION BUT THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE OR REMOVE THE KEY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
MY VISOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE WILL NOT STAY UP. IT SEEMS TO BE LOOSING AND IT WILL NOT STAY FORWARD EITHER. WHEN I AM DRIVING IT IS ALL IN THE WAY. IT HITS ME IN THE HEAD. I DO FEEL LIKE THIS IS A RECALL ISSUE BECAUSE THIS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM WITH 2007- OTHER YEAR MODELS. I JUST REALLY NEED THE PROBLEM FIX BEFORE IT CAUSE A PROBLEM AND I DO HAVE KIDS THAT I TRANSPORT IN THIS CAR. THIS IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION SO I AM IN NEED OF THIS TO BE FIX BEFORE IT CAUSES A HUGE PROBLEM. I LOVE MY CAR...HUGE FAN OF THE SONATA BUT THIS IS REALLY MAKING ME NOT WANT TO BUY ANOTHER OR EVEN TO REFER ANY ONE TO BUY ONE FOR THEMSELVES. *TR
I NOTICED A SHUDDERING AT 90,250 MILES, WHILE TRAVELING DURING THE WINTER AT AROUND 30-45 MPH, BUT WAS VERY INTERMITTENT, AND WOULD GO AWAY. THEN ON 10/9/2013 AT 102,515 MILES, FROM PARK, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE. I COULD HEAR THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT, BUT IT WAS NOT DISENGAGING FROM PARK. PER HYUNDAI SERVICE TECHNICIAN, THE TRANSMISSION WAS "JUNK" AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORPORATE, DURING WHICH TIME I WAS INFORMED THEY DIDN'T HAVE MY INFORMATION IN THEIR SYSTEM AND THAT IN FACT THERE WERE 2 RECALLS THAT THEY FAILED TO NOTIFY ME OF, AND WAS TOLD THAT IF I ALLOWED THE HYUNDAI SERVICE TO DO THE REPAIR RIGHT THEN, THAT I WOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR THEIR POLICY REIMBURSEMENT. ONE OF THE RECALLS WAS AN ECM AND TCM SOFTWARE UPDATE IN WHICH SYMPTOMS WERE IMPROPER CLUTCHING AND DE-CLUTCHING OF GEARS WHEN ACCELERATING AND DECELERATING. THAT SHIFT QUALITY OVER TIME CAUSED UNDO STRESS ON THE GEARING CAUSING MY FAILURE. THE REPAIR WAS MADE, I THEN HAD TO PAY UPFRONT, AND A WEEK LATER THEY'VE DENIED MY POLICY REIMBURSEMENT CLAIM DUE TO FLUID BEING THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. I THEN PROVIDED THEM WITH FURTHER DOCUMENTATION SHOWING THAT THEIR OWN TECHNICIAN RE-USED 5 QUARTS OF MY ORIGINAL FLUID ON THE REPAIR ORDER, AND THAT I FOLLOWED THE MAINTENANCE RECORD THAT WAS SUGGESTED BY THEIR OWN TECHNICIANS ADVICE WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. DRAIN AND FILL EVERY 30,000 MILES. THE LAST DRAIN AND FILL WAS ON JUNE 14, 2013. HYUNDAI DID NOT PROVIDE ME WITH ANY FLUID ANALYSIS OR SPECS TO SUPPORT THEIR DENIAL OF MY POLICY REIMBURSEMENT. I SAVED THE AGENTS VOICEMAIL OF THE DENIAL IN WHICH SHE STATED DUE TO "COLOR" AND THAT ALONE, WAS THE REASON WHY THE CLAIM WAS DENIED. *TR
DRIVERS SUN VISOR HANGS DOWN, WILL NOT STAY UP.
THE PAINT BEGAN TO COME OFF ON THE FRONT OF MY CAR 3-4 YEARS AGO. FINALLY TOOK IT TO HYUNDAI COMPLAINING THAT IT MUST BE A DEFECT SINCE: 1) NO ACCIDENTS, 2) DO NOT PARK UNDER PECAN TREES, 3) NO HAIL DAMAGE. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THE PAINT TO COME OFF TO THE POINT THAT THE HOOD HAD ALMOST STARTED TO RUST THROUGH. COST ME $597.80 TO HAVE IT STRIPPED, REPAINTED, ETC.
I HAD MY REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS REPLACES IN FEBRUARY 2012 AT AROUND 60K MILES. IN OCTOBER 2012 AGAIN MY CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS DRAGGING AND I HEARD THE TELL TALE SQUEALING OF THE BRAKES SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP TO BE TOLD MY REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS AGAIN WERE WORN OUT AND CHEWED THROUGH, AND NO THAT MY CALIPERS HAD SEIZED AND I WOULD NEED TO PAY YET AGAIN TO HAVE THIS ISSUE REPAIRED. THE MECHANIC MADE A COMMENT THAT THE ONLY TIME HE'D EVER SEEN THIS BEFORE WAS FROM YOUNG PEOPLE DOING "POWER SLIDES" ON THEIR CARS, SOMETHING I WOULD NEVER DO (I AM 28 YEARS OLD). UPON RESEARCH I FIND THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WHEN SEARCHING ONLINE FOR BREAK PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR FOR MODEL YEARS 2006-2010, ENOUGH THAT THERE IS EVEN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN NEW YORK. HYUNDAI NEEDS TO RECALL AND REPAIR THESE VEHICLES AS WELL AS REIMBURSE FOR THE EXPENSE OF FIXING THESE UP UNTIL THEY ISSUE THE RECALL. *TR
THE HOOD PAINT STARTED TO DISCOLOR AND APPEAR SPLOTCHY. SINCE THE PAINT WARRANTY WAS ONLY GOOD TO 36,000 MILES, I FIGURED I WOULD BITE THE BULLET AND GET IT PAINTED AT MY COST. BEFORE I GOT THAT DONE THE DAMAGE HAS NOW APPEARED ON THE LEFT FRONT FENDER (BEYOND THE HOOD) AT 62,000 MILES. THIS IS JUST A LOUSY FACTORY PAINT JOB AND I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S WORTH GETTING THE WHOLE CAR REPAINTED. *TR

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE ENGINE REVVED, BUT DID NOT BRAKE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE STOPPED AND PUT VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL, THEN TO DRIVE GEAR. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,956.
DURING THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS OF RAIN, WE HAVE HAD MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WHERE OUR VEHICLE HAS LOST POWER STEERING AND OUR BATTERY LIGHT GOES ON DURING LOW SPEED OPERATION. . THERE WAS NO DEEP PUDDLES, JUST NORMAL RAIN ON STREETS. IN SOME CASES, TOTAL STALL AND OTHERS ENGINE SCREECHES AND RESTARTS. WITHOUT WARNING. FILED COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI AMERICA. TOOK TO DEALER. WAS ADVISED THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR 2007-2009 HYUNDAI SONATAS. AND THERE WAS NO KNOWN FIX . HAD VEHICLE CHECKED. ADVISED ALL SPLASH GUARDS AND SHIELDS IN PLACE. COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED AT DEALERSHIP. ONE SERVICE REP AT DEALERSHIP ADVISED HIS WIFE HAS SAME PROBLEM. ALL BELTS AND PULLEYS AND TENSION SPRINGS OK. WE ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE RESPONSE WE HAVE RECEIVED AT HYUNDAI TO A "KNOWN " SAFETY PROBLEM. TO BE MORE SPECIFIC, FIVE(5) OCCASIONS HAVE OCCURRED. TOLD TO COME BACK WHEN IT RAINS. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 73,000. *TR
BASICALLY IT APPEARS THAT I'M HAVING THE SAME BRAKE SWITCH ISSUE COMMON WITH MANY HYUNDAIS. HOWEVER, CURRENTLY THE '09 SONATA IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY RECALL. THE PROBLEM BEGAN AT LEAST A YEAR AGO WHEN THE ESC OFF LIGHT WOULD TURN ON AT RANDOM TIMES. IT WOULD NORMALLY CLEAR UPON TURNING THE CAR OFF. A FEW DAYS AGO THE ESC OFF LIGHT WOULD NOT TURN OFF. TODAY I COULD NOT SHIFT INTO PARK FROM DRIVE. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET I QUICKLY FOUND THE BRAKE SWITCH ISSUE. I CONFIRMED THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL. THIS IS SOMETHING OCCURS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING WHICH IS A BIT SCARY SINCE I DRIVE HOME ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. I'M NOT SURE HOW LONG THE BRAKE LIGHTS HAD BEEN OUT. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED FUNCTIONING WHEN THE ESC OFF LIGHT BECAME PERMANENT. HOWEVER, FOR SOME REASON IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN WHEN THE SHIFT LOCK PROBLEM OCCURRED. ODD. NOT SURE WHY AN ADDITIONAL ISSUE WOULD MAKE THE SPEED CONTROL FUNCTIONAL AGAIN. *TR
PREMATURE WEAR AND REPLACEMENT WAS REQUIRED DUE TO A DEFECT INVOLVING THE BRAKES AND CALIPERS WHICH MAY INVOLVE DEFECTIVE PARTS AND/OR PREMATURE CORROSION. BRAKES AND CALIPERS REPLACED TWICE IN TWO YEAR PERIOD. REAR BRAKE CALIPERS WOULD PERIODICALLY STICK AND GRIND CAUSING BRAKES TO SMOKE AND GIVE OFF BURNING SMELL. CAR AT TIMES WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO THESE PROBLEMS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND ESC LIGHT COMES ON AND IT'S LIKE THE GAS IS SHUT OFF BUT DOESN'T DIE. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST 9 MONTHS AND IT REALLY HASN'T BEEN AN ISSUE BECAUSE NORMALLY YOU CAN SHUT THE CAR OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND IT'S FINE BUT THE OTHER DAY I WAS ON A MAJOR HWY IN THE MIDDLE LANE AND IT SHUT DOWN. THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR MADE A STRANGE SOUND AS I PULLED IT DOWN IN A NORMAL FASHION. WHEN I TRIED TO RETURN IT TO THE NORMAL POSITION, IT JUST FLOPPED BACK DOWN. IT WILL NOT STAY IN PLACE. I HAVE TRIED VELCRO STRIPS AND TAPE TO HOLD IT IN POSITION AND NOTHING WORKS. THE VISOR IS OBSTRUCTING MY VIEW AND IT WILL SWING AROUND WHEN I MAKE TURNS, WHICH RESULTS IN THE VISOR HITTING ME IN THE HEAD WHILE I'M ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE WITH AN ALREADY OBSTRUCTED VIEW. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, TONIGHT I WAS DRIVING AND THE LIGHT THAT NORMALLY COMES ON WHEN YOU OPEN THE MIRROR, CAME ON UNEXPECTEDLY AND WOULD NOT TURN OFF. I HAD TO DRIVE FOR 25 MINUTES WITH MY PASSENGER HOLDING THEIR HAND OVER THE LIGHT SO THAT I COULD DRIVE HOME. THIS PROBABLY WOUND NOT HAVE BEEN SUCH A PROBLEM IN THE DAYLIGHT, HOWEVER, THIS WAS AT NIGHT. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST OVER $70 JUST FOR THE VISOR AND EVEN MORE TO HAVE IT INSTALLED. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2006 SONATA BUT THAT DOESN'T HELP ME. *TR
WAS DRIVING AND NOTICED A BURNING SMELL IN THE CAR. STOPPED AND COULD FIND ANYTHING WRONG. SO WE DROVE HOME, AT MAYBE 15 MILES FROM HOME WE NOTICED A SCRAPING SOUND. AND COULD NOT DRIVE ANY FURTHER, BEING LATE AT NIGHT WE CALLED A FRIEND WHO HAS A TOW TRUCK AND IS MECHANIC. TOLD US THE BRAKE PADS WERE WORN AND WAS SCRAPING METAL TO METAL.HE TOWED US HOME FOR $25.00 WHEN WE GOT HOME WE CALLED ROADSIDE SERVICE THEY TOWED IT NAPLETON HYUNDAI IN CALUMET CITY ILL WE PURCHASED THE CAR FROM, FAMILY HYNUDAI 8101 W 159TH ST TINLEY PARK ILL THE VEHICLE WAS A USED TRADE IN WITH 39,736 MILES PURCHASE DATE WAS 2/18/2012. UPON INSPECTION AT NAPLETON HYUNDAI WE WERE TOLD THAT THE LEFT REAR BRAKE PAD HAD HUNG UP IN HOLDER AND THAT WE NEEDED TO REPLACE IT AND ROTOR. THE RIGHT PADS WERE FINE AND HARDLY ANY WEAR AT ALL WE WERE TOLD THE WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THAT. WHY SHOULD ONE SIDE GO BAD AND NOT THE OTHER. UNLESS THERE IS A DEFECT SOME WHERE. *TR
I PULLED DOWN THE DRIVERS SIDE VISOR IN A NORMAL FASHION AND IT MADE A STRANGE NOISE THEN IT WOULD NOT WORK PROPERLY. IT HANGS DOWN AND WILL NOT GO BACK IN THE NORMAL POSITION. NOW IT JUST HANGS BLOCKING THE DRIVERS VISION. *TR
DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, SEVERAL PEOPLE PASSED ME AND MADE VARIOUS HAND SIGNALS AND GESTURES (PROFANE, SPECIFICALLY), AS I APPARENTLY HAD LOST FUNCTIONALITY OF MY BRAKE LIGHTS DURING MY JOURNEY HOME FROM WORK. WITH NO INDICATION ON THE OPERATOR CONSOLE TO ALERT THE OPERATOR THAT THIS HAD OCCURRED, I DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE NOT FUNCTIONING UNTIL I HAD ARRIVED TO MY HOME (BARELY AVERTING 2-3 REAR END COLLISIONS ALONG THE WAY). WHEN I PULLED INTO MY DRIVE WAY AND ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT THE CAR FROM DRIVE (D) TO PARK (P), I WAS UNABLE TO ADVANCE THE SHIFTER PASSED REVERSE (R). I HAD TO PLACE THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL (N) AND ENGAGE THE HANDBRAKE. I RETRIEVED A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER TO ENGAGE THE SHIFT LOCK ON THE SHIFT CONSOLE AND PLACED THE VEHICLE INTO PARK (P). AFTER LEARNING OF THIS ISSUE, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, WHO ADVISED ME THAT THE BRAKE SWITCH WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I PAID TO HAVE IT REPLACED. A SHORT TIME LATER, I SAW THE PRESS RELEASE FROM HYUNDAI THAT SEVERAL VEHICLES WERE BEING RECALLED BECAUSE OF THIS EXACT ISSUE, THOUGH, AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI DIRECT, I LEARNED THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THEIR CAMPAIGN. AS A DEGREED MECHANICAL ENGINEER, I MAINTAIN THAT THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE PART OF THE RECALL AND CONSIDER THIS TO BE A DESIGN FAULT OF THE VEHICLE. IF I HAD BEEN REAR ENDED, I COULD HAVE BEEN MET BY A LAWSUIT (NOT TO MENTIONED SUSTAINED AN INJURY) BECAUSE OF NOT FUNCTIONING BRAKE LIGHTS. I'VE MADE SEVERAL CONTACTS WITH HYUNDAI AND THEY WILL NOT BUDGE ON THEIR STANCE THAT THIS IS A DESIGN ISSUE. THERE MUST EITHER BE A FAIL SAFE TO ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE FUNCTIONAL OR, AT THE VERY LEAST, AN ALARM ON THE OPERATOR CONSOLE ALERTING THE DRIVER THAT THE BRAKE SWITCH HAS STOPPED FUNCTIONING. I PURCHASED MY 2009 HYUNDAI SONATA IN AUGUST 2009. IN DECEMBER 2011 I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND ASKED THAT THE BRAKES BE LOOKED AT BECAUSE THEY WERE SQUEAKING AND THE PEDAL FELT SOFT. I WAS NOT SURE WHAT THE MILEAGE WAS BUT I THINK IT WAS AT 34K. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED REAR AND FRONT BRAKES. I WAS TOLD MY REAR BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY GONE AND MY FRONT BRAKES WERE AT 30 TO 40%. DUE TO FINANCIAL REASONS, I HAD THEM FIX THE REAR BRAKES THAT DAY AND TOOK THE CAR BACK TO HAVE THE FRONT BRAKES FIXED IN MARCH 2012. SINCE THAT TIME THE PEDAL IS STILL SOFT AND WHEN I AM DRIVING IN CITY TRAFFIC THE CAR STOPS LIKE I NEED BRAKE, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE PAID $400 IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS FOR NEW BRAKES. I HAVE ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD FOR FEAR THAT I WOULD HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER AN EXHAUSTIVE FIGHT WITH THE DEALER I WAS BASICALLY TOLD THIS WAS THE DESIGN OF THE CAR. I CONSIDER THIS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AND I GUESS IT WILL BE LIKE THE TOYOTA AND/OR FIRESTONE INCIDENT. WHEN SOMEONE DIES BECAUSE THEIR CAR WILL NOT STOP, THEN SOMEONE WILL TAKE NOTICE. *TR
ESC LIGHT STILL COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. SHUTTING OFF CAR AND TURNING BACK ON WILL MAKE IT GO OFF, BUT DOES NOT KEEP IT OFF. EVEN AFTER STOP LAMP SWITCH REPLACEMENT FOR THE RECALL, THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. I SEE MANY MANY OTHERS WITH CONTINUING ISSUE AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT'S BEING DONE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE.

SEVERAL DRIVER SIDE DOOR ELECTRONICS MALFUNCTIONS. LOCK BUTTON DOES NOT RESPOND WHEN TRYING TO LOCK DOORS. GAS CAP OPENER DOES NOT WORK. I HAVE TO MANUALLY OPEN MY GAS CAP THROUGH THE TRUNK. WINDOW AUTO CLOSE BUTTON NOT RESPONSIVE MOST OF THE TIME.
AS SEEMS TO BE THE CASE WITH HYUNDAI'S, THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR WOULD NO LONGER HAVE THE TENSION TO STAY UP. IT WOULD CONTINUALLY FALL DOWN AND NOT STAY IN UP POSITION. IT WOULD ALSO NOT STAY IN THE POSITION AGAINST THE WINDOW TO BLOCK THE SUN. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH HYUNDAI'S FOR A LONG TIME AND IN MY OPINION IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I DID A SEARCH OF THE INTERNET AND IT IS A RECURRING PROBLEM FOR MANY YEARS. APPARENTLY HYUNDAI IS UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO GET TO THE PROBLEM AND FIX THE SUN VISOR ISSUE. THERE WERE EXTENSIVE DAMAGES TO THE REAR AND FRONT BUMPER OF THE VEHICLE BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ACCELERATION ISSUE AND A REPRESENTATIVE WAS SENT TO FURTHER INSPECT THE FAILURE. AFTER THE INSPECTION, THE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS NORMAL AND NO FAILURES WERE FOUND. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,782.

YOU NEED TO PUMP SEVERAL TIMES TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT WORK. APPARENTLY HAPPENS MORE OFTEN WHEN THE WEATHER IS REALLY HOT. BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES. COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG SINCE THE WEATHER AT THE TIME OF CHECKING WAS NOT HOT. *TR
RIGHT REAR BRAKE MAKES PULSATING RATTLE SOUND. SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE AFTER SEVERAL MILES OF DRIVING IN WARM, DRY WEATHER. TECHNICIANS CAN'T FIND PERMANENT CURE BUT IT DID GO AWAY FOR AWHILE AFTER THE ROTOR WAS RESURFACED. HOWEVER, THE NOISE HAS RETURNED. THIS IS THE SAME WHEEL ON WHICH SEVERAL THOUSAND MILES AGO THE CALIPER SEIZED CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE BRAKE ON THAT WHEEL. THE RATTLING SOUND HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A LONG TIME, AND THE MILEAGE I ENTERED FOR THIS COMPLAINT IS A SHEER GUESS.

WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE'S 2009 SONATA THE CLUTCH BECAME STUCK TO THE FLOOR. I HAD TO USE MY FOOT TO PULL THE CLUTCH BACK UP TO THE NORMAL OPERATING HEIGHT IN ORDER TO CHANGE GEARS. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED AS THE PERSON BEHIND ME EXPECTED ACCELERATION AT THE TIME BUT I WAS SLOWING DOWN DUE TO THE INABILITY TO SWITCH GEARS IN A TIMELY MANNER. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES. THE TRANSMISSION ALSO DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY DURING THIS PROBLEM AND IS AT TIMES NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET INTO GEAR REQUIRING ME TO DEPRESS THE CLUTCH SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT GOES INTO GEAR PROPERLY. HAD IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM THEREFORE THEY CLAIM NOTHING IS WRONG. THEY LUBRICATED THE LINKAGE AND SAID THAT WAS ALL THEY COULD DO. I HAVE DISCUSSED THIS WITH REPUTABLE SHOPS IN THE AREA AND THEY CLAIM IT IS CERTAINLY A PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVE TRAIN, BUT HYUNDAI WILL NOT FIX THIS. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD MY WIFE TRANSPORTS BOTH OF MY CHILDREN DAILY IN THIS VEHICLE. *TR

THEY SAID THAT THE REAR BRAKES ARE CONSTANTLY ENGAGED THUS BURNING THE PADS AND DECREASING GAS MILLAGE. OTHER PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEM THOUGH HYUNDAI DENIES IT. I BELIEVE THERE IS A DEFECT HERE AND IT MIGHT INVOLVE THE PROPORTIONING VALVE SENDING TOO MUCH PRESSURE TO THE REAR CALIPERS IN COMPARISON TO THE FRONT CALIPERS. I HAD AN ISSUE WITH MY CAR JERKING RATHER HARD WITH THE AUTO-TRANNY DOWNSHIFTED FROM 2ND TO 1ST GEAR WHENEVER I SLOWED DOWN. THIS SOMEWHAT STOPPED WHEN THE CAR GOT WARMED UP, GUESSING MORE SPECIFICALLY WHEN THE TRANNY HEATED UP. I SEE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. I'M IN A WARMER CLIMATE SINCE AND HAVEN'T SEEN IT BUT WILL SEE HOW IT BEHAVES THIS WINTER IN AUSTIN, TX VERSUS LAS CRUCES, NM. I THINK IT MAY HAVE STOPPED ABOUT THE SAME TIME A) IT GOT A LITTLE WARMER OUT AND B) I SIMULTANEOUSLY STOPPED PUTTING IN IT NEUTRAL AT STOPLIGHTS (TRYING TO SAVE MY CLUTCH FROM WEAR AT THE TIME.) PERHAPS IT USED THIS "NEUTRAL" INFO IN ITS COMPUTATION FOR THE TRANNY COMPUTER AND THAT WAS THIS ISSUE. OR MAYBE IT WAS THE COLD AND I STILL WILL FIND I HAVE THE PROBLEM. OR BOTH. NOT SURE BUT WANTED TO PUT THIS OUT THERE SINCE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE BUT AM PROBABLY THE ONLY WITH THE PROBLEM WHO WAS PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AT LIGHTS. *TR
