TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH THE CONTACT SMELLED A BURNING ODOR. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED. THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE THE CONTACT NOTICED THE FUSE BOX WAS ON FIRE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 23,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HORN ON HIS ALARM WAS NOT LOUD ENOUGH. THE CONTACT WENT TO THE DEALER WHO REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO ALTER THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE ALTHOUGH THEY WERE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000.
THE VEHICLE LOOSES POWER WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD AND ALL THE ELECTRONICS SHUT DOWN. I LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES AND COULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT THE SERVICE TECHNICIANS CAN NOT SEE ON THE COMPUTER OR FIGURE OUT. FIRST THE SERVICE TECH SAID IT WAS A FUSE NOT PLUGGED IN ALL THE WAY THEN THEY SAY IT WAS THE BATTERY.. I FEAR FOR MY LIFE IN THIS CAR AND WILL NEVER DRIVE IT AGAIN. IF I WERE IN A CROSS WALK I WOULD HAVE HIT A PEDESTRIAN OR I COULD HAVE HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON A HIGH SPEED ROAD OR GOING THROUGH A TOLL BOOTH OR THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS INJURIES. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THE MANUFACTURER FEELS I SHOULD DRIVE THIS CAR. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS OK BEFORE AND I ENDED UP HAVING AN ACCIDENT. THIS CAR HAS AN ELECTRONIC DEFECT. THEY DO NOT PUT ANY VALUE ON LIVES. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 108 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 850.
CAR HAS BEEN WANDERING ALL OVER FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND ALL ROADS. 2ND SONATA IN THREE YEARS BOTH WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. CONSTANTLY CORRECTING THE STEERING TO KEEP THE CAR STRAIGHT. *TR
MY 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA TURBO HAS THE FOLLOWING PERSISTENT ISSUE. WHEN THE VEHICLE SITS OVER NIGHT, IN COOL WEATHER CONDITIONS OF ABOUT 60 DEGREES AND/OR LOWER, UPON FIRST START IN THE MORNING IT WILL NOT REV PAST 4000 RPM (WHILE DRIVING) AND AS A RESULT IT DOESN'T HAVE THE POWER TO MERGE ONTO THE HIGHWAY IN A MANNER THAT I WOULD CONSIDER SAFELY. I KNOW OF A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN THAT HYUNDAI HAS RELEASED THAT'S SUPPOSE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE HOWEVER, I ALSO HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF ABOUT 10 VEHICLES WITH THIS SAME ISSUE, SOME THE ISSUE PERSISTED EVEN AFTER THE DEALER CLAIMED TO HAVE REPAIRED IT. WHAT I CONSIDER THE MAIN SAFETY ISSUE TO BE IS; THERE IS NO INDICATION/ALERT WITHIN THE VEHICLE'S DASHBOARD ILLUSTRATING THE ISSUE AFFECTING THE ACCELERATION/PERFORMANCE. MY VEHICLE HAS NORMAL POWER CITY STREETS OR AT ABOUT 30 MPH OR LESS. I DISCOVERED THE ISSUE WHEN TRYING TO MERGE ONTO A HIGHWAY, DUE TO LACK OF ACCELERATION POWER (WHICH MY VEHICLE SHOULD/DID HAVE), I WAS NEARLY REAR-ENDED BY A 18 WHEELER AS I WAS TRYING TO GET UP TO HIGHWAY SPEED. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS EVER TURNED ON. MY VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND HAS ABOUT 13,000 MILES ON IT NOW. CONSUMER STATES CONCERN WITH ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM AND THE LACK OF AN ENGINE KILL SWITCH. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAD NO WAY OF SHUTTING DOWN THE VEHICLE IF THE COMPUTER SYSTEM ACCELERATED OR IF HE ENCOUNTERED A STUCK GAS PEDAL. THE CONSUMER WANTS TO KNOW, THAT HE HAS A POSITIVE MEANS OF MANUALLY SHUTTING DOWN THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. THE CONSUMER WOULD LIKE A CLEAR EXPLANATION OF THE PUSH BUTTON ENGINE STAR/STOP SWITCH. HE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS IT A COMPUTER FUNCTION OR A MANUAL ELECTRICAL DISCONNECT TO THE VEHICLES ELECTRONICS. ALSO, IF IT IS A COMPUTER FUNCTION, WILL THE DEALER INSTALL A MANUAL TOGGLE SWITCH UNDER THE DASH THAT WILL KILL ALL ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE HYUNDAI SENT HIM A LETTER, ADVISING HIM TO REFERENCE HIS OWNERS MANUAL. HOWEVER, THE MANUAL DID NOT ADDRESS HIS PRIMARY CONCERN. THE MANUAL ONLY TALKED ABOUT HOW TO OPERATE THE SWITCH. UPDATED 11/13/12

BUMPER (REAR) FELL OFF HYUNDAI SONATA 2012 MY DAUGHTER WAS REVERSING IN MY FRONT YARD, WHEN THE REAR BUMPER FELL OFF THE CAR. SHE DID NOT HIT ANYTHING OR ANOTHER VEHICLE. SHE WAS NOT HIT EITHER. IT JUST FELL OFF! THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT BELIEVE US. THERE ARE OTHER STORIES OF THIS ON THE INTERNET. PLEASE DO SOMETHING, THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY WITH DEADLY RESULTS. WE CONTACTED HYUNDAI CONSUMER SERVICES, THEY WOULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, OR ACKNOWLEDGE AN AWARENESS OF THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP. THIS IS A PRODUCT DEFECT. IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP THE CAR DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE. I AM CONSTANTLY HAVING TO OVER CORRECT THE PROBLEM. IT IS VERY HARD TO DRIVE ESPECIALLY ON THE INTERSTATE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN HE LOOKED THROUGH THE REAR VIEW MIRROR OR DIRECTLY AT IT, THE REAR WINDOW LOOKED DISTORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO STATED THAT IT WAS UNUSUAL; HOWEVER THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 290.
AFTER OWNING THE CAR FOR ONE MONTH (980 MILES), MY CAR LOST POWER STEERING, AIR, AND ENGINE POWER WHILE DRIVING. A WARNING CAME ON THAT SAID, "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM." IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO SAID THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I REFUSED TO TAKE THE CAR BACK UNTIL A DISTRICT PARTS AND SERVICES MANAGER CAN LOOK AT IT. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI CORPORATION WHO DIDN'T SEEM TOO CONCERNED. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT HYUNDAI IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING. *TR
ABOVE 55 MPH THE STEERING IS EXTREMELY HARD. SMALL MOVEMENTS OF THE STEERING WHEEL CAUSE LARGE LATERAL MOVEMENTS OF THE VEHICLE REQUIRING OVER STEER TO CORRECT. AT 55 MPH AND GREATER , THE FEEL IS LIKE MANUAL STEERING CAUSING ARM AND WRIST FATIGUE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HILL THAT WAS NOT VERY STEEP, IN GOOD WEATHER, WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON AT 60 MPH. AS THE CAR WENT DOWN THE HILL, THE SPEED INCREASED TO 80,AT WHICH POINT IN TIME I USED MY BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN. THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WITH ME ALONE AND WITH OTHERS IN THE CAR, INCLUDING A STAFF MEMBER OF THE DEALERSHIP, WHO TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS NORMAL BEHAVIOR FOR A HYUNDAI SONATA AND FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL ON HIS OWN VEHICLE. IF I CANCEL CRUISE CONTROL IN THE MIDDLE OF A HILL, SPEED DECREASES OR HOLDS STEADY --IT DOES NOT ACCELERATE. *TR
VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN PARKING LOT WHEN WE CAME OUT THE DRIVER SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAG (FRONT AND BACK) HAD DEPLOYED....INSPECTED FOR DAMAGE IN PARKING LOT AND THERE WAS NONE FOUND IN OTHER WORDS NOBODY HIT VEHICLE....TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER IN COLUMBIA MISSOURI, JOE MACHENS HYUNDAI, AND THEY INDICATED THEY HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND WERE CONTACTING HYUNDAI USA FOR INFORMATION...THEY RAN COMPUTER CODES ON VEHICLE EVERYTHING WAS FINE...ALSO CHECKED FOR DAMAGE TO VEHICLE AND NONE FOUND...MAJOR CONCERN IS THAT IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS PROBLEM...COULD THIS BE A MAJOR A PROBLEM WITH 2012 SONATAS?? *TR
AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR NEW IN SEPT OF 2011, WE RECEIVED NOTICE FROM HYUNDAI ADVISING OF RECALL DUE TO PULLING WHILING DRIVING. WE CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES AND WERE ADVISED THEY WERE WAITING ON THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION ON HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS HAS CONTINUED SINCE NOVEMBER OF 2011. THE DRIVING CONDITION OF THE CAR HAS CONTINUED TO DECLINE AND HAS EVEN CAUSED THE FRONT TWO TIRES EXCESSIVE WEAR. THE FRONT TIRES ALREADY NEED REPLACEMENT. THE CAR DRIFTS OFF TO THE RIGHT SEVERELY WHEN YOU RELEASE THE STEERING WHEEL, CAUSING FATIGUING OF THE ARMS DUE TO CONTINUED CORRECTION OF THE STEERING. *TR
THE SIDES OF THE TIRE IN QUESTION SEEM VERY PRONE TO SIDEWALL FAILURE. THIS TIRE HAS A LIP ON IT THAT EXTENDS ABOVE THE WHEEL'S RIM (AS OPPOSED TO THE SMOOTH, ROUNDED SURFACE OF OTHER TIRES). UPON DRIVING UP ON A CURB WHILE PARKING THE CAR AT WORK, A ONE INCH FLAP OF RUBBER 1/4" DEEP WAS RIPPED FROM OUR RIGHT REAR TIRE. THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE SHOWS TWO SPOTS WHERE A PART OF THE TIRE'S LIP WAS RIPPED OFF (WHERE IT IS FLUSH WITH THE TIRE) FROM OTHER BRUSHES AGAINST THE CURB. MOST ALARMING IS THE LEFT FRONT TIRE WHICH HAS A 1/2" CRACK OR INCISION IN THE TIRE -- AND THIS IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE RIM AND SHOWS NO SIGN OF HITTING A CURB. IT'S HARD TO TELL HOW DEEP THE INCISION IS BUT IT IS AT LEAST 1/8" DEEP. THE NEW 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA EQUIPPED WITH THESE TIRES WAS PURCHASED IN NOV. 2011. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS A LITTLE MORE THAN 5,000 MILES ON IT. IN THE COMBINED 80 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN DRIVING, WE HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED SIDEWALL FAILURE FROM DRIVING ONTO A CURB OR JUST FINDING A CRACK IN THE TIRE. I DO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT HANKOOK, THE MANUFACTURER, HAS HAD A RECALL FOR ITS HANKOOK / DYNAPRO AS / P265/70R17S RH03 (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10T021000). THE CAUSE WAS SIDEWALL FAILURE. WE REPLACED THE TIRE WITH THE GASH IN IT. WE DO HAVE PHOTOS OF THE TIRES IN QUESTION AND CAN SEND PDFS TO YOU IF SO DESIRED. WE ALSO KEPT THE TIRE WITH THE GASH IN CASE WE NEEDED IT FOR SOME REASON IN PURSUING THIS (ADDITIONAL PHOTOS, INSEPCTION, ETC.). IT IS HARD TO DETERMINE THE DATE OF WHEN THE DAMAGE WAS DONE SO I'VE LISTED THE DATE THAT THE TIRE WITH THE RIP WAS FIRST NOTICED. THE TIRE WITH THE INCISION OR CRACK IN IT WAS NOTICED TODAY (7-14-12) WHILE GETTING THE OTHER TIRE REPLACED. THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THE TIRE SIZE IS 225/45R18-95V. *TR
THIS IS A HYBRID VEHICLE. IT CHUGS, HESITATES AND ALMOST STALLS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP. THE SERVICE PEOPLE TELL ME THAT IT IS NORMAL BUT THIS IS MY 3RD HYBRID AND THIS IS NOT NORMAL. *TR
2012 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS. MILEAGE NOT AS ADVERTISED. STICKER SAID 25 CITY AND 35 HIGHWAY. HAVE TRACKED MILEAGE FROM 1000 TO 5000 MILES AND AVERAGES 23 MPG INCLUDING SOME HIGHWAY DRIVING. NEVER DRIVE AGGRESSIVELY. I BOUGHT THIS CAR THINKING I WOULD BE GETTING MILEAGE AS ADVERTISED. TRIED TO CALL HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 800-633-5151 FOR A CASE NUMBER AND WAS ON HOLD FOR 10 MINUTES BEFORE HANGING UP. ALLEN HYUNDAI DEALER SAYS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND RECOMMENDED GOING TO ANOTHER DEALER FOR MILEAGE TESTING OR CALL HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE. *TR
IN JUNE 2012 WHILE MY SONATA WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY THE DRIVER SIDE GLASS SHATTERED WITH NO IMPACT. I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT THINKING IT WAS DAMAGED SOMEHOW. BUT YESTERDAY YET AGAIN MY SONATA WAS SITTING IN THE GARAGE THIS TIME AND THE DRIVER SIDE GLASS SHATTERED AGAIN. THIS MUST BE A DEFECT IN THE CAR SOMEHOW. *TR
As stated by other owners the brake lights come on and off I have had the bulb replaced several times. I wiggle the blub it comes on and off. This is a danger to cars behind me as the brakes lights are not working properly I believe there should be a recall as many owners are having and have had the same issue with this problem. My sister has a Hyundai not a Sonata had the same issue but her type of Hyundai was recalled for fault wiring. The Sonatas should be recalled also.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC STEERING WHICH FUNCTIONED AS DESIGNED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 500.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH, HE APPLIED SLIGHT PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE WALL OF A GARAGE AS A RESULT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION BUT THE FAILURE WAS UNKNOWN AT THE MOMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,500. UPDATED 07/13/12 *BF
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NOTICED A BUILD-UP OF A DEWY SUBSTANCE ON THE INSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DEWY RESIDUE WAS CAUSED BY THE SUN HEATING THE DASHBOARD AND VAPORS EMITTING FROM THE DASHBOARD AS A RESULT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 11,400.
THE VEHICLE'S CRUISE CONTROL FAILED TO ENGAGE OR DISENGAGE WHEN USED. THE DEALERSHIP WAS INITIALLY UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM, THEN REPLACED A HEADLAMP SWITCH. AFTER THIS, THE RADIO BEGAN TURNING COMPLETELY OFF WHILE DRIVING, AND THE CRUISE CONTROL CONTINUED TO ACT ERRATICALLY. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT REPLACED THE RADIO. SEVERAL MORE TIMES, THE DEALERSHIP STATED THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL AND RADIO. AFTER CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURER, THE DEALERSHIP LOOKED AT THE CAR AGAIN AND FOUND LOOSE PINS IN THE CONNECTOR TO THE FUSE BOX. *TR

THE ONLY COMMON FACTOR IS THAT IT HAPPENS AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN AT IDLE FOR A MOMENT, SUCH AS COASTING THROUGH A PARKING LOT OR SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. IT HAPPENS ABOUT EVERY 2-4 DAYS. VERY DANGEROUS AS I HAVE ALMOST BEEN HIT TWICE NOW PULLING OUT ONTO A HIGHWAY ONLY FOR THE ENGINE TO STALL. THE ENGINE NEVER TURNS OFF, IT JUST DOESN'T RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.
