NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2012 Hyundai Sonata. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonta. The brake lights are not working properly. I have been changing the tail light for some time now but it doesn't seem to be working. At first all lights came on and they wouldn't go off until I took the battery cable wire off. Then on another day the brake light in the back window, got stuck and the turn signal wasn't lighting up(no brake , nor turn signal lights but it showed in the car like it was working.when hitting the blinkers. I have taken it to several car shops even the dealership to have it checked out. I was told that it wasn't nothing wrong, but got stopped by police on numerous occasions cs the car didn't have Bck lights. The last shop i took it to said that it was the cars electrical system. I've checked to see if there was recalls.Doesn'tshow anything. It should be recalls on this, cause that's a safety hazard. Knowing you just changed out the lights and then boom u have no lights to show your turning or just on the road period at night. This is dangerous , I've almost got rear ended by a semi n other vehicles that was behind me and i had my granddaughter in the vehicle. Please check into this for the safety of ppl like me. Thanks in advance..
About a year ago, my 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid had an error with an alarm that would pop up on the screen but was too fast to catch what it said. It would happen a couple of times a month. One day, I was driving about 60 mph and the alarm came on, the car stalled and it said to not drive the car. I was able to roll to a stop on the side of the road. I turned off the car and had it towed to my house. In looking at it, I turned it on and everything seemed fine. This happened another time about a month later. The second time, I just turned off the car, let it sit for a minute and turned it back on. I took it into a dealer and they said they couldn't figure it out and to bring it back if it kept happening. It hasn't had a problem since then until this morning. Here, nearly a year later, I was in the middle of a busy intersection and it gave the error and alarm and the car stalled. I turned it off, let it sit for a few seconds and then turned it back on and backed up. Fortunately, the cars coming at me noticed I couldn't move and stopped! I would pay to have this fixed if they knew what was going on! Everything I see online about this issue, no one knows what is causing it. I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it to someone else knowing this is such a safety issue. It's just a pile of metal at this point.
The brake peddle stopper gets worn out and the car stops accelerating. Activation of the engine management system's brake pedal override feature causes the car to not accelerate, brake lights stay on, and car turns on without touching the brake.
About 1 month after I bought this vehicle, late December 2021, a warning light came on the hybrid screen, it read "Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop And Do Not Drive!" The accelerator was not working I pulled over and turned the vehicle off. I waited a couple minutes and restarted it up again and went on my merry way. About a month later it happened again!! It's happened about every 5 weeks until June 16th at about 5pm, it now permanently chimes and beeps with the Hybrid screen warning me of the same, my foot brake goes to the bottom and makes a grinding noise. I am not able to drive it more than 100 yards or so then the accelerator fails again. I owned a mechanic shop and I know my brakes are fine, there has to be something wrong with the brake pumps/master cylinder, the brake fluid reservoir is full and the brakes electrical components make a horrible noise when I depress the foot pedal, I've read on Hyundai Forum on-line, that this has happened to various others, its happened on the freeway while I was going about 70mph!! It's happened on busy city streets with 45mph speed limits. Hyundai doesn't want to take any responsibility for it! What can I do? The dealer wants $200 to have it checked with no guarantee that they'll find the problem. Thank you [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The lighting system on the front and back lights, tail lights and brake lights are shortaged and melts the housings thst the bulbs go in. I have had two of these cars with the same identical problems and my son has had two sonatas and I have more people that’s having the issue as well. It’s very dangerous because the tail lights work whenever and me as the driver can’t see behind me nor the person driving behind me will know that I’m stopping. I can’t drive my vehicles at all at this present time and has made s appointment with the company, Hyundai and filed a complaint as well. Something has to be done quickly to put this on the recall list because it’s very dangerous for myself and others on the national highways
After an oil change, my car started losing power at the gas and suddenly turned off on me while I was driving and never turned back on! When I tried turning my car back on my engine started smoking
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, she noticed that the vehicle had started decelerating before stalling without warning. The contact was able to pull off the road to a parking lot and park the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and then to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine had seized and needed to be repaired or replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 122,000.
1#.air . #2 not inspección 1year ago. #3 air bag lihg warning was the first day a Buy tne car. never im put interés now im know Is bad in damgere.
The front driver side coil spring broke at the base. Was driving my car and heard what sounded like something hitting the underside of my car. Upon inspection we found the coil spring had broken. In researching online there was is a campaign recall for 2010-2011 Hyundai Sonata (#133). My vehicle does not fall in this category, but feel it should. Coil springs just don't break, unless you are going off road. There are many forums with similar incidents.
The contact's son owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated when she arrived at her residence, she noticed that her son's rear brake lights illuminated while the vehicle was turned off. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated her son placed a can on the brake pedal to turn off the brake lights. The contact stated she had to disconnect the battery and reconnect before using the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V759000 (Exterior Lighting) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 179,000.
After the recent recall repairs, the car started to intermittently getting a message on the dashboard saying ‘Hybrid System Warning - Safely stop and do not drive’ and ‘Check brakes’ and the brake lights came on with a loud chiming beep, the car would stop accelerating and would not go beyond 10 mph, also the breaks would fail to apply correctly and made a loud screeching sound when applied. It used to do have this issue without any warning, while driving or stopped at the light, without any distinguishing pattern. However, it used to go away when the car was restarted multiple times. However now the message is on continuously and doesn’t go away with the restarting the car. After taking to the dealership, they said that the repairs would cost $3000 as the Hydraulic Power Assembly unit has failed. After looking for the issue online, I have found that a lot of the 2011-14 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid have this same issue and seems to be a manufacturing defect. This is a huge life risk for the owners of this car since it can happen while on the freeway and pose a life threatening risk to their life. It is also a huge financial burden for the owners for a manufacturing defect. I would like you to investigate these issues and provide us with a appropriate solution.
My Hyundai Sonata has the failed engine that was recalled by Hyundai. But because we did not do a software update Hyundai will not replace the engine. We were not aware of either recall. We also didn't know about a class action settlement. My car is sitting at the dealership since December, 2021. I have notified your department once before and nothing was done. This vehicle has been deemed dangerous to drive but I will have no choice. Hyundai needs to step up and replace their horrible mistake. Please help me.
While driving the car started smoking white smoke and locked up. I was unable to get off roadway and almosred caused wreck. Had vehicle towed to dealership they said ut had a recall on it for engine failure. Checked the engine and it was locked up. They submitted the engine replace to hyundai and they denied because I didn't have a software update done prior to engine failure. Had no warning at all.
It began in 2020; the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid I've been driving started having issues with the hybrid system. At the time, the car was still under warranty. I took it in multiple times to AutoNation Hyundai in North Richland Hills, TX, because I kept getting the error message "Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive", the car battery would become depleted, and the car would stop. My husband and I would take the vehicle multiple times to the service center at AutoNation Hyundai in North Richland Hills, TX, and nothing was done because, according to their staff, the error could not be duplicated. At one point, they kept it for almost a month, barely driven (we looked at the mileage on the car) before it was returned with no work done on the vehicle. Last June 2021, on a drive to Dallas to take my daughter to her volunteer program at the Dallas Zoo, the car stopped in the middle of the highway for the same problem. I called AutoNation Hyundai in North Richland Hills, and they could not see the vehicle in a timely manner and would not give me a loaner while they had the car in the shop. At that time, I wanted them to check the vehicle's issue and the recall issue that seemed like we were experiencing with the car; it was the only car I had to use to get to and from work and drive my daughter to her obligations, and they could not see it promptly and would not issue me a loaner vehicle. I ended up taking the car to Hiley Hyundai of Fort Worth; they supposedly found a faulty sensor and repaired it, checked it for a recall, and couldn't find the issue at that time. Last night, my car flashed the same error and lost all power. I was on I-35W North with my daughter at the time. I had the vehicle towed after hours to AutoNation Hyundai and called this morning to follow up. I spoke with someone at service, and they told me they could not look at the car until about mid-January and would not be able to give me a loaner in the interim. I tried to explain to the
Loss of power, while trying to accelerate, troubleshot and it was caused by a worn brake stopper after replacing the brake stopper vehicle retained the loss of power and unable to drive past 37 mph. Possible ECM problem as vehicle is not throwing any DTC.
1. The engine failed due to rod knock - rod bearing wear/damage. This vehicle is in the possession of Killeen Hyundai. 2. This engine failure occurred on the highway while my family and I were traveling. 3. The Killeen dealership has confirmed this information over the phone but we do not have documentation of this. We are unable to contact the dealership for any updates or statuses for 2 months now. 4. unknown 5. No warning lights or indicator appeared prior to the issue. This occurred on 12-16-2021.
Check engine light started flashing. Drove approximately .5 miles home then towed to Brown's Hyundai of Leesburg dealership on 12/06/2021. Advised on 12/22/2021 Hyundai will not cover repair of engine and said it was not covered by their recall. Dealership described problems as those listed in the recall. "Metal shavings" seen.
I brought my engine in to be checked after the recall for engine failure. Hyundai told me it was fine/not affected. I brought my vehicle in twice after that because while driving, the engine suddenly stopped accelerating in the middle of driving. Both times, I was told that nothing was wrong with my car. They went so far as to accuse me of overfilling my gas tank (which I have never done). I trusted them instead of looking up this issue being part of the recall symptoms. Finally, while in the middle of driving, the engine locked up completely. I had it towed to Hyundai. They finally admitted it was covered under warranty, but I see no evidence of them recording it as a vehicle affected by recall. I am very concerned about this because there are probably thousands of other families at risk right now because of Hyundai's dishonesty and dodging responsibility and not including their VINs in the recall either. If their engines were to lock during a left turn for example, people are at risk of dying. In addition, Hyundai has still not reimbursed me for the towing and rental car costs of $2918.27 total which they are entitled to per the settlement. It has been over 3 months since I turned in the last of the paperwork. It has been over 7 months since the engine died. More importantly, they need to be fully investigated for withholding information, falsifying information, and putting people at risk of death and at a financial disadvantage.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was awaiting a diagnosis. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V568000 (Engine) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and was awaiting a response. The failure mileage was approximately 148,000. Consumer was told by the dealer engine was gone and case number [XXX] was issued. On 12/22/21 Hyundai denied coverage, stating it wasn't associated with Recall/Campaign 132. On November 13th of 2021 me and my four year old we're in the car as I was driving the vehicle and my oil lamp light kept blinking showing that my car was on low oil and then my engine light came on right after and started blinking as well 5 minutes after that my car broke down on the side of the interstate on 65 north me and my daughter we're at risk of safety because it was 10:00 at night stuck on the side of the interstate in the freezing cold for 2 and a half hours what had happened was the connecting rod inside of the engine worn out so it basically locked up my whole engine as I was looking on information about a recall it was showing the same exact thing that has with my vehicle now my vehicle is sitting at a dealership while I'm still paying payments on my lease with it still no answers about why my car isn't being fixed and what is going on with it
The cars engine burn oil very quickly and runs improperly. The car jerks when attempting to accelerate normally and deaccelerates when driving at normal speeds which can cause an accident with ongoing traffic.
The contact's son owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while her son was driving at various speeds, an abnormal knocking noise would emit from the engine without warning. Upon investigation, her son discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V568000 (Engine) which he linked to the failure. Her son then took the vehicle to a dealer where he was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was also notified, and her son was informed that the recall on the vehicle had expired. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The VIN was not available.
This morning when i drove the car to Bart station, just before i parked in the parking lot. the showboard showed "Hybrid System Warning, Safely Stop and Do Not Drive". So i stopped and parked the car in the parking space. i'm not sure what the issue is and if i still can drive it after i came back from my work. After i checked the website and found there're a lot of people have this same issue as this case. I did not see any of them have solution for it. So I believed that this is a big issue since it will cuase death if it happens in the high speed high way. please do the investigation and recall for it to save lives! appreciated in advance.
I am experiencing the exact same issues described in a previous recall of 2006 to 2007 model affecting the brake lamp switch. My brake lamps remain illuminated after release of the brake pedal, and the ESC light illuminates on the dash
1. Air Bag Light is On. 2. Car does not start. Both of these problems re-occured after Inspected & serviced by Hyundai.
The VIN number for this car is [XXX]. "Check engine" light was on and the car could not pass the inspection. We took the car to the mechanics and they found out " leak from fuel pump module" (please refer to the mechanics report for details) . Due to the safety concern, we have to fix it right away out of our own pocket. This particular VIN number is not included in the MHTSA ID: 18V934000. We are requesting this VIN number to be added in the recall ID 18V934000. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). UPDATE-06/01/2023- Consumer is checking status of VOQ.
3 of my light lamps where burning and front headlight could have start a fire
Smoke started coming from the engine and then caught fire
Said vehicle is affected by the Sonata engine connecting rod bearing inspection recall campaign. During the manufacturing of the engine, metal debris may have been generated during factory machining operations. If the debris was not removed from the crankshaft ‘s oil passages, it could contaminate the connecting rod oiling passages , restricting oil flow to the connecting rod bearings and increasing the potential of premature bearing wear. A worn connecting rod bearing may result in one or more of the following: 1. A metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine which increases in frequency as the engine RPM increases. 2. Illumination of the Check Engine Light in the instrument cluster. However, engine failed, lost all power without any warning. My safety was put at risk without prior warning as I turned onto main thoroughfare . No indicators from instrument panel warnings nor any illumination of check engine light. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Was told directly from dealership that vehicle affected by engine recall. Problem was confirmed on October 8, 2021. Dealership states reported problem to Hyundai Automaker and is waiting on a response. There were no warning lights, lamps, messages, or any symptoms of a problem prior to instantaneous engine failure. Vehicle towed to dealership Irving Freeman Hyundai, Irving TX on October 7, 2021 and is still there as of this complaint submission.
At 28,000 miles the ABH pressure sensor failed c1237 Hydraulic Power Unit. Dealership charged $2947.95 for the repair. $2141.55 just for the part. The brakes completely failed and the car required towing.
Every alarm started beeping, engine light and a few other lights came on in the dash, speed was about 45-50, car stalled out, and it's said check charging system, pull over safely and do not drive. This was 10 pm and in a dark area. Could have been very serious had I been on a busy freeway or highway. This is the 5 time in 2 years it has done this. Everytime I take it to the dealership they tell me nothing is wrong with my car.
Check engine light blinking and engine acting erratically. Took it to dealership they said it was a known issue with the Theta 2 engines whereas there is premature wear in the rod bearings and it requires a new engine. This engine is under recall and has a lifetime warranty on this defect. However, when the dealership contacted Hyundai to replace the engine they said because it has a salvage title they will not. The salvage title was from body damage and nothing with the engine. It is my understanding that salvage title does not negate the need to honor the recall. Can you help? The VIN is [XXX]. I started the car and immediately got a chiming sound with an error message "hybrid system warning! Safety stop and do not drive" brake light also came on. I put the in drive and Car would not accelerate past 15 mph and the brakes did not engage. I turned the car off and the message reset. Same issue occured about a month ago but the dealership could not replicate the problem.
I am a 74-year-old widowed, retired Federal Government worker. I purchased a 2012 Hyundai Sonata in October 2011. This was supposed to be my retirement car. I bought it new from Torrance Hyundai. This car has been a problem from day one. I have a lengthy list of problems. It has only 54,000 miles and will be 10 years old next year. Some of the problems are the gas meter does not work (I don't how much gas I have in my car. For a senior citizen that is not good. My windows button does not work, and my voice control and Bluetooth does not work (it was replaced once) I have a ticking when I turn my car. (Dealer said it would cost $2000. to fix. (it was fixed once) I have an oil leak that a Mechanic told me to take it back to the dealer, it should be covered. (It is not) My dashboard is cracked. (not cover). I have had two Hyundais. The hatchback (one of the first in the USA) and worked fine, and another Sonata in the '90s. I loved them both. Before my favorite was the Toyota, now since this car has all these problems and is paid off. I will never buy a Hyundai again. I looking to buy a small SUV and it will not be a Hyundai. I am ready to tell the media and everyone that would listen about this car and the problems I have had from day one. I have a list of service orders on some of these problems. I was once a loyal Hyundai owner, but now I cannot give my praise to this car or this company. I have a limited income and now I must go back into debt because of your piece of junk. Thank you for making my senior years enjoyable. I like to put this out to the media for all to know of how you treat your customers that have been loyal. I complained about this with Hyundai customer service and received a case number and told to make appointment for them to check the car. But, they didn't tell me it would cost $169.00. It is unsafe to drive cracks in your dashboard where the airbags are located and for a senior to worry about the amount of gas she has.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH and making a turn, the contact heard a clicking noise when making a slight turn on the vehicle. The contact felt that the steering wheel was oversteering while making slight turns in either direction. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle and diagnosed the failure as a steering column coupler that was worn out and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Exact same symptoms as NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 15V759000 (Hyundai recall 136 - described below). The car was previously repaired for this issue. The brake lights come on without any pressure applied to the brake petal, both when the car is off or running. Besides the critical issues stated below, it also causes the brake light bulbs to burn out prematurely, and drains the car battery. Hyundai Motor America "Hyundai" is recalling certain model 2011-2012 Sonata vehicles. The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. Consequence: If the brake light switch plunger does not retract as it should when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brake lights may stay illuminated preventing accurate communication to rearward following vehicles that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, then the transmission can be shifted out of PARK without depressing the brake pedal. Either condition increases the risk of a crash. Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began on January 6, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 136.
No Incident. Airbag warning light is always on. This is an going issue with Hyundai Sonata 2012. Contacted the dealer since it is a safety issue, but they said it is not under warranty. I know several people have the same model of the car and have the same issue with the airbag light. This issue should be recalled because it a is a safety issue
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the brake warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the brake lights were continually illuminated. The contact called the local dealer but, vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact was concerned about a possible fire. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
The rear brake lights burned out can't replace the light because the wiring harness melted and y'all no longer sell replacement wiring harness at the store or dealership for my vehicle make and model I was told I would have to make a out of pocket costly repair to install a new model wiring harness. I keep getting pulled over by the cops cause I don't have break lights. Worse case someone could run into the back of me. This issue is a Hyundai issue. It's so many Hyundai sonata riding around without break lights. Please fix this issue.
My engine is making this knocking noise and when I check my oil it has metal shavings in it from the engine
My brake lights constantly burns out and I’m having to repair them every month. My brake lights also stay illuminated when I am pressing the brake which does not show that I am stopping or slowing down. This is a MAJOR safety issue that needs to be repaired
The Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear on a 2012 Hyundai Sonata that only has 70,000 miles on it.
Engine failed while driving, causing vehicle to stall and forced to the side of the road while transporting children. I had vehicle towed to dealership and learned that this was a known manufacturing defect, one that I had previously had recall service to repair and eventually a class action lawsuit. I had previously taken the vehicle to the dealership to perform recall repair. They claimed this repair was completed, even though the defect still remained and caused engine to fail. The mechanic advised that a rod from engine was discharged, which "could have killed someone". The dealership initially approved an engine replacement due to known defect and class action lawsuit settlement, but then denied repair due to unrelated branded title. Hyundai corporate refuses to take responsibility for this defect, due to title status, that could have seriously injured or killed someone. One Hyundai agent advised during a phone call on 8/22/22 that Hyundai is not responsible for remedying any manufacturing defects if the vehicle has branded title, which is in contradiction to federal law. This is a grave safety concern and should be investigated by the NHTSA. I would be glad to participate in such an investigation, providing call records, names of witnesses, statements and documents as needed.

After driving one day, I noticed the brake lights on without anybody in the car, they would not turn off whatever I tried. The next symptom was the traction control turned off and would not function via dashboard button. the next symptom was, while driving, cruise control turned on without myself doing so, set it's speed and maintained, I was approaching a 4 way stop and depressed the brake expecting cruise control to disengage, it did not, I pressed the brake again this time holding it down while the car continued to revv, the engine continuing to attempt to speed up while pressing the brake. The only thing stopping the car was the on and off button on the steering wheel. I finally came to a screeching halt half way into the intersection, the brakes were locked up and vehicle would not move, the dealership claims no responsibility in anything and blames it in fact on myself putting the wrong brake fluid into the vehicle. I had not put anything into the vehicle, the dealership was the last to touch it when they did a complete engine replacement in Jan 2021. Vehicle is currently in their possession and available for inspection. No warning lights came on and vehicle began to function normally after, and I have not driven it since. I do not feel safe any longer in the vehicle. Dealership wants me to pay for all new brakes, rotors, brake light switch and brake flush, all which I feel is dancing around the real issue of the brakes and the cruise control. This is a real serious safety issue to anyone with this same vehicle and the potential for a serious possibly fatal accident, dealership doesn't seem to think it's a serious issue, and instructed me to drive the vehicle home, I did not!!!!!
The car hesitates when excelerating. The car has had this problem since I purchased the vehicle. I have reported to the Hyuandai dealership within in a few days of purchasing it. They told me it was normal. It has been in and out of the dealership many times and they finally told me ithey installed the knock sensor device which helped for a short time but it’s gotten worse. It hesitates so bad at times I almost got struck from the side because my car got stuck in the middle of the road because it wouldn’t go.
Bluetooth cuts out on vehicle and volume shuts off completely on stereo. Without the bluetooth and volume functioning on the vehicle, I no longer have handsfree capability. It endangers my safety (and others) and then becomes a legal violation for me to answer my phone while driving. I have taken it to a dealership and they have been able to reproduce the problem. The only solution they provided me was to replace the whole head unit for the exact same system that has this known bluetooth/volume issue. On forums that I've read it's stated that this is a software/firmware update that resolves this issue, but the dealership says they know nothing about it nor does Hyundai national. Other dealerships in the country have installed the software update to fix the issue.
I bought a 2012 Hyundai Sonata at an auction in June of 2017. Since buying the car I have moved 3 or 4 times. In late July/ early august 2021, The car turned off while driving. When Trying to turn it back on the engine made a clunking noise and shut off. Then the car would not turn on again. The car engine had a recall on it. When looking into the recall, there was a recall on sonatas stating this was identified and bc of this issue, the car had been recalled. The car was towed to Hyundai in Brockton, they would diagnose the car to see what happened, and they said it is indeed engine failure. (They didn’t even diagnose the issue until 1-1.5 months after giving them the car). The dealership sent a claim to Hyundai corporate stating this and to see if Hyundai corporate would cover the cost of the new engine since this car was recalled. Hyundai requested that they take the engine apart and examine the valves to see if the cause was due to the recall issue or if it was us not keeping up with the maintenance. They asked to provide invoices for the car oil change (the 2 recent invoices were provided showing maintenance) When Hyundai corporate responded back they said they denied request to cover the cost of a new engine because when they sent the recall notice back in 2018 and the car was never sent to get the engine fixed. The recall would have put in a device to notify the car when/if the engine is failing. Since it’s 2021, they said recall period is expired and bc it was never brought in, they are not at fault. But, the only notice I had was right before covid where things were shut down and crazy. (As mentioned earlier I have moved 3-4 times)
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle stalled without warning. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to her residence and then to a dealer for assistance. Once there, the contact was informed that the engine had seized and that the engine would need to be replaced. The contact stated that she had previously received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V568000 (Engine) however, she was informed that the recall had expired. The manufacturer was notified about the failure through the dealer and they informed her that since the vehicle was not properly maintained; they declined to repair the failure under recall. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was unknown. When looking into the recall, there was a recall on sonatas stating this was identified and because of this issue, the car had been recalled. The car was towed to Hyundai in Brockton, they would diagnose the car to see what happened, and they said it is indeed engine failure. (They didn’t even diagnose the issue until 1-1.5 months after giving them the car). The dealership sent a claim to Hyundai corporate stating this and to see if Hyundai corporate would cover the cost of the new engine since this car engine was recalled. Since it’s 2021, the recall period is expired and bc it was never brought in, they are not at fault. But, the only notice I had was right before covid where things were shut down and crazy. (As mentioned earlier I have moved 3-4 times). Hyundai refused to fix the car and offered to buy it for $200 or if I wanted to fix it, they quoted me $5000 that I would have to pay them. They also informed me that I would be liable to pay so long as the car was in their dealership so I had to pay to tow it to my house. The root cause of the issue of the engine recall. I kept up up with all maintenance to the car and could not get the recall addressed due to the covid shutdown. Hyundai should be held liable for fixing the car since the recall was a safety issue and should not "expire".
