NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2012 Hyundai Sonata. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Brake and tail light continues to burn out. I have replaced bulbs and entire assembly every couple weeks and t melts thei units as well as my engine stalls out and will not accelerate and does this intermittently. This puts me at risk of one of my lights catching fire or a crash due to my engine losing power on the freeway when I turn my lights on
When driving the “Check Brake” warning comes out and the brakes hit the tires allowing for minimal movement of the vehicle. Right after that, a “Hybrid System Warning - Safely Stop and Do Not Drive” comes up. At times, The warnings will continue for days or hours and other times, imthey would just disappear. When bringing the car to the dealer they wouldn’t be able to understand the issue as the warnings suddenly disappear and they would just start guess-repairing the car which can be extremely expensive for us the consumers
The contact's mother owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his mother was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed however, there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The failure recurred two weeks after the contact's mother received the vehicle back from the dealer. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer and diagnosed with engine failure and that an engine replacement was needed. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,073.
The car transmission breaks down prematurely. And dashboard show hybrid system warning safely stop do not drive. Hyundai is asking for $5000 to replace the transmission.
Rear brake lights stay on even when the engine has been turned off
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently stalled. The check engine warning light, the battery warning light, and other unknown warnings lights were illuminated. The contact was unable to veer to the side of the road however, he pushed the vehicle to the side of the road with assistance. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed to the contact's residence. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000.
While driving the car turn off and I could start it on again. On dashboard I had battery warning, low oil and check engine light on. We towed the car hone and next day we checked the oil and in general what’s going on. We manage to start the car but the engine was making a knocking sound and won’t stop. We can’t drive the car because it will turn off.
UNKNOWN: On July 14th, 2021, I was driving approx. 45mph on the Expressway when I felt the car losing a little power, I looked at the speedometer and noticed (no warning lights where on) the speed was going down slowly as I was attempting to accelerate, the car would not go past 20mph. Then all the sudden I lost all controls of the car (the car stalled) I was not able to steer or brake, the car had stalled in the middle of the parkway, it was a very dangerous situation, so many cars came within inches of hitting me. I was able to finally restart the car and get it to the side of the road and then it stalled again. This time when I attempted to restart the car I noticed there was smoke coming from under the hood and the would not start, at that point I called for help. The car was towed to my mechanic and he determined the engine was seized. (see attached pdf) Car is available for inspection.
While I was driving, an error stating "Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do not Drive" popped up on my dash.
ON 05/26/21 THIS VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CROWN HYUNDAI FOR AN ENGINE RECALL AND WAS NOT RUNNING. IN FACT, SINCE PURCHASED AT THE AUCTION IT HAS NEVER RAN MORE THAN 30 FEET THEN SUTS OFF. TECH SAID, COMPUTER RESPONDED WITH A FAULTY WHEEL SENSOR, A DEAD BATTERY, AND FAULT ABS SENSOR. I PICKED UP THE CAR AND PUT NEW BATTERY IN IT, AND A LEFT REAR WHEEL SENSOR AND REPORTED BY HYUNDAI. OUR MECHANIC SAID TAKE BACK TO HYUNDAI TO RESET THE ABS SENSOR, SO ON06/24/21 WE DID RETURN THE VEHICLE TO CROWN HYUNDAI AND WAS TOLK NOW THEY COULD NOT SET THE SENSOR AS THE BATTERY WAS THE WRONG TYPE, NOW A CODE FOR A FLAP DOOR AND AN ALLEGATION OF THE VEHICLE BEING WRECKED IN THE FRONT END CAUSING DOOR DAMAGE. MY RIGHT HEADLIGHT HAS ALWAYS BEEN LOOSE BUT NO DAMAGE. NOW THE COMPUTER SAYS THE DOOR PLAP AND FRONT BUMPER DAMAGE IS CAUSING 30 MORE DEFAULTS TO POP UP MY WRECKER DRIVER WILL TELL YOU THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVING BUT WOULD START AND MOVE UNTIL SENSOR SHUT DOWN. NOW IT WILL NOT START OR MOVE AND MORE SENSORS ARE BEING SHOWN.. SERVICE MANAGER SAID ,, I CANNOT TELL YOU NOT TO FIX IT, BUT THERE ARE MORE CODES POPING UP NOW... THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE... HE SAID HE HAS SEVERAL MORE HYDRID'S SITTING IN THE BACK THAT ALSO SHOW MANY CODES.
These are known for engine failure which has already happened to me summer of 2019. The first time Murdock of Murray gave me a hard time replacing the engine even though it was a recall they tried over charging for other repairs that supposedly lead to the seized engine. Murdock also told me the turbo on the vehicle would need time to adjust and kick in with turbo the coils needed to get oil in them for the turbo to work properly. After fixing engine the turbo never was the same but Murdock insisted nothing was wrong. Now 25k miles later again the vehicle is on the verge of seized engine. While in traffic at 5pm ish, I turned left and as I was turning my vehicle would not accelerate, I heard a crackling noise and the check engine light came on but the car was still running all power but would not accelerate over 20mph with the rpm flooring. I immediately thought it’s happening the engine is seizing. Remind you this was the second time this happened. I almost died twice in this vehicle both times with my children in the car. I called Murdock to ask if they would tow the vehicle they told me no I would need to pay out of pocket, so I did, bc the vehicle would not accelerate. Once I got my car to the dealership already the technician seemed annoyed by my prediction with the engine on the verge of seizing. After a few days of the technicians looking over my car he claims I must pay for repairs and blamed me when these engines have been recalled by Hyundai. I then reached out to Hyundai corporate national consumers for assistance and they were just as bad. I was told there’s nothing I can do until a case manager calls me but they will let them know about this issue. No one has contacted me. The fact that Hyundai is trying to find ways to not cover their faulty death trap vehicles and the dealership is right behind them on giving customers a hard time replacing the recall without causing all the stress and over charging. Hyundai should be ashamed of themselves.
Seat belt unbuckles from base. This was a recall for sonatas but ours is having this problem but it says it is not a part of the recall
UNKNOWN. I purchased this vehicle and found it had an open recall and would like it checked out.
When driving in the car at any speed over 40 mph, the brake override will engage at random moments and slow the car down about 20 mph immediately. This makes the car extremely unsafe to drive especially on freeways because when going the speed limit of 60 mph, the car will suddenly slow down with no warning to me, the driver, and the car driving behind my car, also going 60 mph or more, will then have to slow down to my speed just as fast if not faster to avoid hitting the back of my car at an excessive speed. This problem first appeared around July 6th, 2021 and has been an ongoing and worsening issue since then. There is a similar recall that has been put out on other cars, but my car has not been included in that recall even though this is clearly a problem affecting my model as well. I ask that my model be added to the recall list to avoid other people possibly getting into an accident.
Driving in traffic in town and accelerator pedal quit working. Deceleration happened until I went from 40 mph to 2mph. Then able to accelerate back up to 30mph and happened again until I coasted to a stop. Traction control light came on after second incident. Car was in park and still on. Turned car off, took key outside vehicle and exited vehicle. Car locked itself and brake lights came on and stayed on. This is a danger!!! Can cause an accident, driver has no control over vehicle at random times. Traumatic and scared to drive vehicle now.
Brake lights stay illuminated when car is off. Loses speed while in motion. ESC lights come on.
Air bag light won’t turn off
After intermittent starting and car dying for no reason, the engine completely died while driving on highway. I filed a claim with Hyundai as part of Theta Engine settlement. I had the engine replaced at my expense, they will not cover. It is now burning oil at an alarming rate. This is dangerous and has happened to many many HYUNDAI/KIA owners as part of this engine problem.
While driving on 285 @ 60 mph the car begins alarming with a hazard light indicating emergency braking system failure then the car looses complete braking capabilities and power to drive, all while I am in front of an 18 wheeler. I have practically no control over the stirring wheel as the car has completely lost all power all I could do is throw on my hazard lights and pray that the truck sees me then I begin to coast off to the side of the highway. In 2019 the engine seized up and did the exact same thing lost total power on the highway, the engine was replaced in 2019. In 2020 the transmission was causing problems and was replaced as well, this vehicle is a death trap and I truly fear for mines and my child’s life when driving it. I have never ever really feel safe in this car after my engine failure it left with in total paranoia with it loosing total power and leaving me without control to get out the way of on coming traffic thank goodness the trucker behind me noticed I was in distress and I was able to coast off to the side. I have googled and seen that there has been many others who have had this exact same problem with the braking system. Hyundai needs to recall these vehicles for this braking problems so no has to loose there lives behind it. Please please, please help me and the others that have these issues to get this matter resolved. Every since I have gotten this car it has had nothing but major issues in my eyes it should be deemed a lemon. Please advise
Dear To Whom It May Concern, My cars VIN: [XXX] There is a recall (NHTSA Recall Number20V746000) that I found on this website for my car that the dealership below is claiming is not correct and will not work on. Springfield Hyundai Address: 754 Baltimore Pike, Springfield, PA 19064 My car has been having engine issue even after it getting services at another Hyundai Dealership Service Center. Engine overheats and smoke came out several times. Not it is jerking while I drive - loosing power. I barely was able to get the car to the service, that is how bad the state of the engine is at the moment. Initially when I took the car to the service center they said there is no recall at all on my car, even though the Hyundai customer service agent acknowledged the recall I mentioned above. After some push back from me, the service agent at the center said there was a recall but not the one I mention above a different one. I would really appreciate some help getting the recall above sorted out. Thank you in advance. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Recall 198. Dealership has had my car for over 30 days. NO LOANER OR RENTAL!!!
I was driving on the freeway and I put my foot on the gas to accelerate and my car would not go. It had no power. It is intermittent. I can be driving and it is fine then all of a sudden it won’t go more then 30 mph. My brake lights are always going out. Now my break lights won’t turn off.
This safety issue affects Hyundai Sonatas with a turbo. The vehicle loses acceleration. The engine will rev with the tachometer functioning properly, but the vehicle speed does not increase accordingly. This is a safety issue because drivers could cause accidents when merging into traffic, changing lanes, or clearing an intersection. This issue may be related to my engine being replaced by Hyundai as part of a recall since it happened within a week of receiving the new engine. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -- The problem is related to the wastegate actuator and/or sensor. The ECU/ECM seems to disable the turbo in the vehicle. Stopping and restarting the vehicle (rebooting) eliminates the problem until the vehicle is parked/off for at least nine (9) hours. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - See introduction above. When accelerating from a stop, the vehicle's acceleration stalls at about 20-23 MPH, even with the tachometer reaching 7,000 RPMs. While driving above 30 MPH, the vehicle is very slow to accelerate so merging onto any highways or changing lanes is a high-risk maneuver. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -- Yes. They first tried to replace the turbo boost sensor but that did not eliminate the problem. Hyundai Sonata owners have reported this problem since 2012. "Wastegate actuator sensor". Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -- Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by a manufacturer dealer service center. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -- No. The warning lamp does not activate on a regular basis with this issue. The warning lamp does appear approximately 10% of the time but again, rebooting the vehicle removes the warning lamp.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the rear taillights failed to illuminate upon depression of the brake pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where she was informed that the socket to replace the light bulb had melted and that due to the failure, both light bulbs could not be replaced. The contact also mentioned that a white smoke had emitted from her driver side headlight when she attempted to replace the light bulb. The contact was able to replace the driver side headlight bulb; however, the driver side headlight bulb would illuminate very dim. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
AHB Hydraulic Break Module Failure car only has 60k miles.
I was driving on the Highway and my vehicle started blinking with all of the check lights going off and it stated “hybrid system warning stop and pull over immediately”. The car seemed to continue to jerk with the gas than the brakes went off. My steering wheel would not allow my to turn and I was very close to getting into an accident. My 6 month old baby was in the car and I feared for both of our lives. Every time I turn the car on it states the same thing... please help me
Entered a freeway on-ramp, the engine started to make a slapping noise. I thought it was the fan belt slipping. We began to lose acceleration, had a burning smell We pulled off and had the vehicle towed. Subsequently we discovered that the issue was exactly that which appeared in a published recall notice: Symptoms of the problem can include abnormal knocking noises from the engine; reduced power or hesitation; illumination of the “check engine” light or the engine oil-pressure warning light; or a burning smell, oil leaks, or smoke. In discussing with Hyundai, it was stated that my VIN does not meet a full reimbursement due to the VIN not being included. How is that possible, when the symptoms match the year, Make, model. https://driving.ca/auto-news/news/hyundai-recalls-almost-129000-cars-in-u-s-for-possible-premature-engine-wear
I have provided this information already, case number 11424760. I am now submitting further documentation on this safety issue. There was a recall notice from Hyundai, for whatever reason, this was changed to not include our vehicle. We never heard back about the solution & they no longer will replace the engine.
My break lights and head lights are constantly blowing out, I've had multiple repair orders to prove this & can have records pulled from my pull overs. My back up camera now has an electrical issue and will no longer come on. Also when I'm driving the gas pedal just stops working while driving!!! Very very dangerous. My car is well kept and maintained there is NO reason for these issues to be happening aside from a manufacturer issue. I know plenty of people with the same year make and model as me and they all have the same issues. There really needs to be recalls put out on these issues as they are a safety concerns and they are putting me and my children in danger every day. I wish I had researched these issues before buying a Hyundai. I WILL NEVER BUY ONE AGAIN especially if these issues do not get resolved.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the engine ceased with the hybrid system warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where she was informed that the engine failed due to a disconnected rod bearing. The contact was informed that the engine needed replacement. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine). The contact was then informed that the vehicle would be serviced under the recall however, the dealer had not replaced the engine due to the manufacturer sending multiple incorrect engines. The contact notified the manufacturer on numerous occasions about the failure and was provided, two case managers. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000. Consumer stated engine still has not arrived and has been without a vehicle for 3 months now.
THE PARKING AND BRAKE LIGHTS WILL NOT TURN OFF WHEN I TURN OFF MY CAR. THIS IS RESULTING IN THE BATTERY DYING CONSTANTLY AND I AM NOT ABLE TO LOCK OR SECURE MY CAR.
On one of the first occasions, I had just exited the Lincoln tunnel when the "Hybrid System Warning Safely Pull over" came blaring along with the "Check engine" light. I safely pulled over and noticed the car would act as if it was in "neutral" when it was actually in "Drive". I shut off the car and eventually I was able to drive.
BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH GRINDING NOISE. CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE.
Vehicle’s dash panel just started cracking three years ago for no apparent reason. By the day the cracks continue. My concern is over time the cracks will become so bad the air bag will deploy prematurely causing injury. This is a known issue in Hyundai Sonata from 2011-2014. This is not due to extreme heat. This is a defect and should be addressed before someone gets seriously hurt.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the engine was previously replaced under recall after the engine failed while driving at an unknown speed. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where they replaced the engine under NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V568000 (Engine). Recently, while driving at various speeds, the check engine and oil warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated that the vehicle would stall as an abnormal, knocking noise would emit from the engine. The contact had taken her vehicle back to the dealer where it remained in their possession. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact with a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
Spun rod bearing in recalled vehicle. Had recall inspected at the dealership as per the recall. Dealership said everything was fine. Engine failure due to recalled parts and dealership will not cover.
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN I HEARD AN EXTREMELY LOUD BOOM, IT SOUNDED LIKE A BOMB WENT OFF IN MY CAR. THEN I WAS SHOWERED WITH GLASS FROM ABOVE. I IMMEDIATELY SLAMMED ON MY BREAKS (FORTUNATELY I WAS ON A COUNTRY ROAD WITH NO ONE BEHIND ME). THE FRONT SEAT PORTION OF MY PANORAMIC SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED. I PULLED OVER AND GOT OUT, LOOKING FOR A BULLET AS I THOUGHT SOMEONE HAD SHOT AT ME THEN FOR A ROCK OR ANYTHING THAT WOULD EXPLAIN WHY MY SUNROOF JUST EXPLODED GLASS ALL OVER ME. I FOUND NOTHING. I DROVE HOME CRYING AND SHAKING. MY BF TOLD ME TO GOOGLE WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO SEE IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER PEOPLE. APPARENTLY IT HAS! I AM UNSURE WHY I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE CLASS-ACTION LAW SUIT, AS I BOUGHT MY CAR FROM A DEALER AND HAVE HAD IT FOR JUST OVER 6 YEARS NOW. FORTUNATELY IT IS COVERED UPTO 120,000 MILES DUE TO THE LAW SUIT, I HAVE 118,580 MILES ON MY VEHICLE. I AM STILL EXTREMELY SHAKEN TODAY!! I REALLY WANT TO SELL MY CAR BUT CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER CAR PAYMENT (THIS MONTH IS MY LAST PAYMENT). VERY UPSET!
When I learned my right brake light was out and upon further investigating I found that the socket for brake bulb was melted as well. I now need to replace the socket and wiring so the bulb will hopefully work properly. When I took my car in for an oil change recently, I was told the brake socket had melted the brake light assembly. Also which will now need to be replaced as well (Quoted $150 plus labor). Next thing is a little hard to explain, but short time later I was driving on freeway and my car will suddenly stop accelerating and start slowing down. Then will kick back up again like nothing happened, car didn't lose power during this. All power was sill on radio, lights ect.. The first time this happened it was so quick I didn't know what to think. Not long after that my daughter was driving this time and it did it again repeatedly will stops accelerating (on off on off on off). To the point we were slowing down quite a bit and had to put the flashers on, as suddenly as it started it stopped. Again no loss of power or steering ect. The only light that came on was my traction control light and wouldn't go off even when pressing the button. Since there wasn't any check engine light showing on instrument panel I have no clue what could be the problem. Side note I have had issues with my cruise control not wanting to work or occasionally will work. Two days later after this incident my daughter told me that all my lights we're on and doors were unlock. Car wasn't dead at that point. Turned them all the way off just in case but another day or so later car is unlocked and completely dead took a very long time to get started back up. At this point I have to disconnect the battery so that the lights won't go on and kill the battery. Outside of these issues I've had no problems with the car absolutely love my car. But am very concerned.
I WAS IN MOTION ON THE INTERSTATE AND SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT POPPED ON AND IT WAS TOLD IT ENDED UP BEING THE CAMSHAFT. ON MY WAY TO SHOP THE NEXT DAY MY CAR CUT OFF ON THE INTERSTATE AND EVERYTHING WORKED BUT CAR WOULD NOT CRANK. WAS TOLD IT WAS ENGINE. I HAD NO WARNING AND YES MY OIL HAD BEEN CHANGED.
AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON, I SEE THIS MODEL HAD RECALLS
MY PASSENGER REAR LIGHT KEEPS BLOWING. I HAVE REPLACED THE BULB ONCE A WEEK SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR TWO YEARS AGO. I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER MULTIPLE TIMES, THANKFULLY I WAS NOT TICKETED AND WAS GIVEN A WARNING ALL 3 TIMES. THE LIGHT WENT OUT AGAIN SO I WENT TO CHANGE THE BULB AND THE THE WHOLE HOUSING UNIT IS MELTED. NOW I AM UNABLE TO TAKE THE BULB OUT TO CHANGE IT.

Our 2012 Hyundai Sonata's engine failed with no warning lights our any sounds indicating possible problems. It failed while driving and immediately stalled which could have easily caused an accident. We are the original owners of the vehicle and all recalls had been completed with the engine having been looked at as part of a recall several years ago. The mileage was around 121,000 and Hyundai has taken care of replacing the engine. We are still waiting on them to reimburse us for towing related to the incident four months after our car broke down.
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. I TRIED TO TURN THE CAR ON BUT IT DIDN'T COME ON, AND THEN I NOTICED IT SMOKING UNDER THE HOOD. ABOUT 5 MINUTES LATER THERE WERE FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND QUICKLY SPREAD TO THE REST OF THE CAR.
