NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Break light harness was burning around the socket. Caught on time could of caused a fire and serious injury to me and my children. This should be recalled as it is known to be an issue with most of this model vehicle.
on 06/29/21 10am, I was entering Hwy 287 NO. from Hwy 80's Mawah exit. I accelerated from 50 MPH to 65 MPH, the engine shuts down. I was able to pull over to the shoulder. After a few minutes, I put the car in park and the engine restarted. I drove the car towards the next exit, then the engine shuts off again. I called AAA and I am waiting right now for the car to be towed. This is a very dangerous safety issue.
Dear Sir/Madam, I bought the vehicle in 2016 from a local dealer, unknown to me that the vehicle had a branded/salvage title. After driving for a few years, about a month and half ago, while driving the engine just stalled on me. After having back and forth with Hyundai National Team and Hyundai Corporate, they denied my warranty claim that because its a salvaged title. The engine is original and was not tempered with as confirmed my Local Hyundai Dealer. Hyundai has currently recalled about 1.6 Million vehicles due to premature bearing wear and potential engine failure issue. The vehicle currently has 65,000 miles on it, and the engine breakdown is an internal failure. Having a salvage title should not be a reason to deny the claim especially when its not a cosmetic problem but an engine failure itself. Spending $6,000 - $8,000 on a new engine is completely unaffordable for me. I will appreciate any help you can provide after I have been suffering without car for almost 2 months in these difficult COVID times.
On 06/11/2021, I visited Hyundai Harrisonburg, VA service center to perform some recalls as per the attached documents. I was told that the engine is covered by a lifetime warranty and they didn't charge me anything. They performed recall #162 for the engine problem & installed a special software to monitor the knocking problem. They didn't open the engine to check the crank or the bearing wear. They asked me to keep an eye on the engine and if any thing happens, I could return back immediately to them. Only after 6 days, smoke started to go out of the exhaust and I couldn't drive the vehicle over 40 MPH. I drove the vehicle to them and left it for a week. After a week; when I called them, they told me that the engine needs to be changed with a new one but they couldn't contact Hyundai USA to send them a new engine because the car was driven more than 120K miles as per Hyundai rule (10 years/120K miles). I told the service center manager that it's a lifetime warranty according to the Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America Resolve Engine Litigation [https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/2883] He said that Hyundai should approve it to replace the engine and I should contact them for approval. So I contacted NHTSA to get me that approval instead of wasting my time explaining the litigation. I couldn't drive the vehicle since then because of the heavy smoke. I towed it from the Service Center to my home and submitted the complaint. I consulted 2 mechanics who advised me not to drive the vehicle to avoid engine explosion or an accident. It's not safe to drive the vehicle for me and for others in the street. The litigation is very clear that engine warranty is lifetime and the problem that happened to it is what that warranty covers. Smoke and low speed driving mode are some of many symptoms of that issue. I am waiving my right of compensation for towing or rentals and I don't want any compensation other than engine swap ASAP. I want them to tow it back. Thanks
2014 Hyundai Sonata, 65500 miles. Engine seized while driving on the highway. Complete loss of power. Car would not start after the incident. Hyundai dealership won't have time to diagnose the car for 1.5 to 2 months and won't provide a loaner or rental car. Likely several additional months after they look at it to get a new engine.
3rd Brake light. The tailgate light that is in the rear middle inside the vehicle goes off and the bulb base is melting due to heat. It's available for inspection upon request. Moreover, it's a known problem in many models of my vehicle. This light is a part of the safety inspection in my state VA which means it's important to have it working all the time. If the vehicle driver behind me doesn't notice that I'm in a stopping process or pressing on the brake paddle, both of us will be at risk especially on the high way. Yes the problem was confirmed by Hyundai and many service centers confirmed it. There was also a recall regarding this problem but didn't solve it permanently. It happened again and service centers don't fix those affected vehicles again. Since there was a recall before, this component was inspected and confirmed by the manufacturer. They should keep fixing it till they find a permanent solution or change the part with a better one like LED for example to reduce heat. There was no warning lamp, message, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. It's discovered when someone behind the affected vehicle warns me or the traffic police stops me. This is the most important brake light because at night it's the only light that warns other vehicles drivers behind me that's I'm reducing the speed or in a stop status since other right and left stop lights are shared with normal tailgate lights and might not warn others. This 3rd brake light is high enough to be seen by all vehicles behind my vehicle.
Tail light melting replacement of the assembly required.
Similar to other complaints here and in other forums: Faulty lights: flickering off and on while driving at night, unable to use the lights in “auto” mode or else they flicker/battery drains and flickering with use of turn signals. Has been reoccurring since at least 2021 and has worsened over time
MY VEHICLE DIDN'T PASS SAFETY INSPECTION DUE TO THE BRAKES GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WHEN PRESSED. HYUNDAI CASE NUMBER #16939771 WAS CREATED AND IT WAS TAKEN TO TONY HYUNDAI IN WAIPIO HAWAII TO BE SERVICED. THE ACTIVE HYDRAULIC BOOSTER WAS FOUND FAULTY AND REPLACED THEY STATED ALL WAS FINE BUT PEDAL WILL STILL TOUCH THE FLOOR AND BRAKE SENSITIVITY IS EXTREMELY HIGH CAUSING FULL ONSET OF BRAKES WHILE DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND HAS NEARLY CAUSE ME TO LOSE CONTROL AT HIGH SPEEDS SEVERAL TIMES. I AM UNABLE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ON THE FREEWAY.
WHAT SEEMS TO BE RANDOM AND WITHOUT PROVOCATION, THE CAR WILL SOUND A BEEPING ALARM THAT ONLY SOUNDS ON THE INTERIOR, IT WILL DEACTIVATE THE ACCELERATOR (BASICALLY PUTS THE CAR IN NEUTRAL), AND WILL DISPLAY A WARNING MESSAGE THAT READS "HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING! SAFELY STOP AND DO NOT DRIVE. CHECK BRAKE". NO MATTER WHAT SPEED THE CAR IS TRAVELING AT, IT CAN UNDERGO THIS PROBLEM. IF BRAKES ARE APPLIED DURING THIS ISSUE, IT WILL SOUND AS IF THE BRAKES ARE GRINDING AND ARE NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE ISSUE CAN ONLY BE RESOLVED BY PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN PARK, TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE, AND RESTARTING IT. IF THIS IS DONE, THE CAR IS BACK TO 'NORMAL' FUNCTION. IT HAS CERTAINLY BEEN A SAFETY HAZARD AS IT HAS DONE IT MULTIPLE TIMES IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHER RATES OF SPEED, AND THE CAR STALLS OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. THE HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS FOUND NO ISSUE AFTER RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS, AND SAYS THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO REMEDY THE ISSUE OVERALL. I WOULD ESTIMATE THIS EXACT ISSUE HAS OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY 20 TIMES, PERIODICALLY, OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHAKE, VIBRATE AND MADE A CLICKING SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED IT AS STEERING COLUMN FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. GREENWAY HYUNDAI OF THE SHOALS (122 US-43, TUSCUMBIA, AL 35674) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OVER THE 100,000 MILES WARRANTY COVERAGE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 141,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE MAKING AN ABNORMAL SOUND. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING TO THE RESIDENCE. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WENT TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE AND DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET REPAIRED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000.
Tail lights continually kept burning out. Eventually, after a few installs, tht last one melted requiring they full assembly to be replaced. The first side went out on the right a couple of years prior, this year the left side did the same thing. The smell of burning was noticed, and found the cause from the tail light.
I WAS DRIVING ON A LOCAL ROAD AND THE CAR STARTED JUMPING SO I PULLED DOWN THE BLOCK TO PARK IT AND IT TURNED OFF.
Break lights continue to burn out. In the 5 yrs I've had the vehicle this is a constant issue. I've taken the vehicle to Balise Hyundai replacing the Bulbs multiple times and replaced one Harness. Today both break lights had to have a full assembly replacement, including harness and the bulbs melted the plastic. The passenger break light even exploded that's how overheated it became. There have been no indication when these lights burn out. I've always had a stranger, neighbor, family or friend alert me that one of my lights were out. 4/26/21 a stranger driving behind pulled up next to me to alert me my tail lights were out. Not knowing break lights out is a safety hazard whether driving on street or highway. The back window has an additional light that has continued to work. In the last 3 years my driving was reduced more than 60% as I relocated to work from home. The vehicle was serviced today 6/2/21 at Hiley Hyundai who performed the most recent inspection and diagnostic on the vehicle, as well as performed the repairs.
AS I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ONE DAY MY WHEEL SUDDENLY BECAME STIFF, I WAS UNABLE TO STEER. I ALMOST HIT TWO CARS WHILE DRIVING, ON MY DASH THE WHEEL LOGO WITH AN EXCLAMATION POINT CAME ON AND SLEEPY ROAD ICON AS WELL. I ALMOST LOST MY LIFE THAT DAY, I WENT TO AN ADVANCED AUTO PART BECAUSE I FELT LIKE IT WAS A POWER STEERING PROBLEM, I BOUGHT POWER STEERING FLUID ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT MY CAR IS ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. I TURNED OFF MY CAR AND THE ICONS WENT AWAY, THE NEXT DAY IT DID THE SAME THING OUT OF NOWHERE BUT THANKFULLY I WAS IN A CLEAR ROAD. THIS DEFECT HAS PUT A RISK ON MY LIFE AND WILL TO OTHERS, PLEASE RECALL THIS VEHICLE.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V121000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE), however, the Ford dealer he purchased the vehicle from informed him that she would need to contact a Hyundai dealer to schedule a recall repair appointment. The contact stated while his wife was parking the vehicle in the driveway, the gas pedal was not depressed however the vehicle accelerated on its own and crashed into the garage door. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact sustained injuries on the right knee but did not seek medical assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.
I WAS DRIVING 70 MILES PER HOUR WHEN MY CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. I COULD NOT GO MORE THAN 60 MILES PER HOUR ON THE FREEWAY
ON 4/16/2021, I WAS DRIVING LATE IN THE EVENING ON THE 60 W FREEWAY, MY SONATA JUST TURNED OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. LUCKILY I WAS ON THE RIGHT LANE CLOSEST TO SHOULDER OF FREEWAY, IT STARTLED & SCARED MY BOYFRIEND & I. I WAS ABLE TO REACT IN TIME TO SAFELY PULLOVER ON SHOULDER WITHOUT HARMING MY BOYFRIEND & I OR ANY OTHER DRIVERS, THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD & COULD'VE HAD DEADLY RESULTS. I QUICKLY SHUT OFF THE ENGINE & RESTARTED SONATA, IT WAS A LITTLE SLUGGISH WHEN TURNING IGNITION ON, CAR TURNED ON & I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME SAFELY. THE NEXT MORNING, MY BOYFRIEND & I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN FELT SLUGGISH TURNING IGNITION ON. I BEGAN DRIVING ON STREETS, AS I WAS TURNING LEFT THE CAR SHUT OFF AGAIN. MY BOYFRIEND & I MANAGED TO SAFELY PUSH CAR OFF TO SIDE OUT OF HARM OF TRAFFIC. TRIED TURNING CAR IGNITION ON, SOUNDS LIKE ENGINE WANTED TO START BUT WOULDNT. MY BOYFRIEND & I PUSHED CAR TO MY BOYFRIENDS HOUSE. ON 04/20/2021, HAD CAR TOWED TO AUTO SHOP FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING FOR EXPLANATION OF CAR SUDDENLY SHUTTING OFF & ENGINE NOT STARTING.
MY VEHICLES ENGINE WAS REPLACED IN OCTOBER 2020 FOR A SUDDEN ENGINE STALL. NOW 5 MONTHS LATER A GAS SMELL HAS COME UP VERY QUICK AND STRONG. MY INITIAL SEARCH OF MY VIN NUMBER DID NOT INCLUDE MY VEHICLE IN A CURRENT OPEN RECALL. AS I SEARCHED FURTHER THROUGH THE NHSTA SITE FOR THE COMPLAINT SECTION AND WAS PROMOTED AGAIN TO ENTER VIN NUMBER IS WHEN I CAN SEE MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE ELIGIBLE DUE TO MY ENGINE HAVING TO BE RECALLED AND REPLACED WITH FAULTY INSTALLATION. POSSIBLY CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO HAVE A FUEL LINE LEAK DUE TO A PINCHED OR COMPROMISED INSTALLATION FROM ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THE FIRST SMELL OF GAS CAME ON THIS EVENING AFTER A 100 MILE DRIVE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND NOW 6 HOURS LATER RESTARTING VEHICLE THE SMELL IS OVERWHELMING AND DEFINITELY A DANGER AND CAUSE FOR CONCERN. THIS 2014 MODEL HAS HAD SO MANY ISSUES AND SHOULD JUST BE RECALLED AND TRADED IN.
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the electrical system had failed to operate as needed both inside and outside of the vehicle. The contact stated that the taillights had failed to illuminate upon depression of the brake pedal, while the interior lights would flicker. Additionally, the headlights would also flicker while in operation without warning. Additionally, the contact stated that an abnormal clanking sound was coming from the vehicle without warning while making left turns. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer where they informed her that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.
THE BEARING BROKE IN MY 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA AND THE ENGINE IS SEIZED. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE CAR SHUT OFF WITH NO WARNING
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE HOOD WAS OPENED, THE HOOD FELL WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER HYUNDAI OF WESLEY CHAPEL (27000 WESLEY CHAPEL BLVD, WESLEY CHAPEL, FL 33544, (813) 437-4745) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH NEEDING THE HOOD GAS SHOCKS TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 77,000.
Headlights will randomly flash off/on while driving. Using turn signals will also make the headlights (and some interior lighting) flicker off/on. Headlights were replaced, but problem still exists. This is a major safety issue for me as other drivers believe I'm flashing my lights intentionally, not to mention, driving at night and having your headlights turn off randomly isn't very safe. We feel very unsafe driving this vehicle after dark because of this issue. This problem started at approx. 70,000 miles. Took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the issue is a defective multi function switch and that others are having the same issue. However, but the dealer said this issue is only covered by the warranty up to 50K miles and I would have to pay to have this resolved. I contacted Hyundai Consumer Affair's and opened a complaint with them. I was assigned case number 18855023, but was told there isn't anything Hyundai could do and I would need to deal with my dealer to get this repaired out of warranty. From my research I've found that many other Sonata owners are experiencing this same issue and that some of the Hyundai Genesis line of vehicles also are experiencing these issues, but in response to these Genesis owners, Hyundai has extended the warranty of the multifunction switch assembly to 15 years with unlimited miles from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use (whichever occurs first). Why is Hyundai not addressing this same issue that exists on their other model lines??? Hyundai needs to extend the warranty and repair this defective switch for ALL other Hyundai models. This is a very unsafe and potentially life threatening hazardous issue that needs to be address for all Hyundai customers and not just the Genesis owners.
THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR WILL NOT OPEN, IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM AFFECTING MULTIPLE LINES OF HYUNDAI'S FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS, AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT SHOWS IN A SIMPLE INTERNET SEARCH, DEALER AGREES ITS A SAFETY ISSUE BUT SINCE HYUNDAI REFUSES TO ISSUE SAFETY RECALL THEY WILL NOT FIX IT UNLESS I PAY NEARLY $2000. ONLY WAY TO EVEN BEGIN TO TRY AND OPEN DOOR IS TO BREAK THE DOOR PANEL - LOCKS, WINDOWS AND HANDLE ALL WORK FINE, THE THE ROD/CABLE THAT TRIGGERS THE DOOR RELEASE TO OPEN. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR NEARLY 10 YEARS AND STILL NO RECALL - SEEMS LIKE THEY WANT PEOPLE TO GET STUCK INT HE CAR WITH NO WASY TO ESCAPE
2014 SONATA LIMITED. HEADLIGHTS FLICKER WHEN USING LEFT BLINKER SIGNAL. SOMETIMES GO OFF BRIEFLY. TRIED DIFFERENT POSITIONS ON MULTI WITCH SEEMS TO BE WORSE ON AUTO. VEHICLE WILL DO IT WHEN STATIONARY AS WELL AS TURNING. RESEARCH THIS AND SEE THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM ON HYUNDAI MODELS AS FAR BACK AS 2009. SON HAS A 2013 HAS THE SAME PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT AT 30 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF TRAFFIC HIT HER VEHICLE HEAD ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RIGHT SIDE OF HER BODY WAS SORE DUE TO THE IMPACT, HOWEVER, SHE DID NOT SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE AUTHORITIES WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE AND THE OTHER DRIVER WAS ARRESTED FOR DRUNK DRIVING. THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE OTHER DRIVERS INJURIES WERE UNKNOWN. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AT THE SCENE. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT REMAINED IN THEIR POSSESSION. THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER HAVE YET TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD YET TO BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. *DT*JB
WHILE DRIVING THE CAR STARTED REVVING,NO POWER,THE CAR WAS STUCK IN FOURTH GEAR, HAD TO TURN CAR OFF,FOR IT TO RUN NORMALLY,BUT IT KEEPS HAPPENING.
The fuel feed line connecting the low pressure fuel pump to the direct injection fuel pump connector has develop a small crack over time due to ambient heat in the engine compartment. A damaged fuel line could allow fuel to leak increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. The only way i notice is because my state inspection did not pass to this reason and i am not sure when the fuel line connector started leaking this could have cause major fire if i would have not found out about it. i talked to hyundai dealership and they have said they dont consider this recall or anything and just to get it fixed but they are telling me the whole line fuel will need to be replaced and its also backorder that it will take a month or maybe more to get part in and fixed. and because of this issue i dont have a car to drive anymore because safety concerns on driving vehicle.
Engine caught fire due to recall not complete, after taking it to mechanic to replace the fire damaged fuel line and engine wire harness, engine somehow lost compression and wouldn't start. Oil level and oil were good, engine started making knocking noise before catching fire. Manufacturer is refusing recall for the engine.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT SELECTOR WAS IN THE PARK POSITION, THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V434000 (POWER TRAIN). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.*DT*DT*JB*JB*DT
MY STEERING SYSTEM IS LOOSE AND MAKE THE CAR HARD TO CONTROL AT TIMES. I HAVE HAD A FRONT END ALIGNMENT DONE WHICH HAS NOT HELPED. I HAVE HYUNDAI ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT HAVE NOT GOTTEN ANY HELP IN THIS PROBLEM. I UNDERSTAND THE THE STEERING WHEEL COUPLER IS MADE OF PLASTIC. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ON ANY STREET OR HIGHWAY.
MY ENGINE STARTED MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE THAT EVENTUALLY CUT THE ENGINE OFF WHILE IN MOTION. AS TOLD THE RECALL WAS ABOUT BUT HYUNDAI CLAIM SINCE MY CAR SALVAGED, THEY WON'T PAY FOR ANOTHER ENGINE WHEN MY IS THE RECALL PROBLEM. NOW WHEN EVERYTIME I CUT THE CAR ON IT MAKES A KNOCKING SOUND THEN EVENTUALLY CUT OFF
2/6/2018-HAD RECALL INSPECTION DONE AT CLAREMONT HYUNDAI. ALL SYSTEMS DEEMED OK. APPARENTLY, THE ENGINE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED. I WANT HYUNDAI TO REPLACE MY ENGINE, AND REIMBURSE ME FOR REPAIRS. 2019-HAD 1 INSTANCE OF ENGINE CUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET. 2020-HAD 2 INSTANCES OF ENGINE CUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING; ONCE ON A CITY STREET, ONCE ON A FREEWAY. VERY DANGEROUS! 2/5/21-ENGINE CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY. ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON CONTINUALLY. PAID $1,500 FOR REPAIRS. (1 ITEMIZED RECEIPT FOR FULL AMOUNT, 2 SEPARATE RECEIPTS FOR SEPARATE CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS). ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON, ENGINE CONTINUES TO CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. MECHANICS CAN FIND NO REASON FOR PROBLEM. .
HYBRID SYSTEM WARNING "SAFELY STOP AND DO NOT DRIVE" WARNING SOUNDED WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 70MPH ON THE INTERSTATE AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER AND WAS UNABLE TO LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER AS THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED! THE DEALER INDICATED IT WAS THE POWER RELAY ASSEMBLY FOR THE HYBRID BATTERY THAT FAULTED.
I WOULD BE DRIVING MY CAR AND IT WOULD JUST DIE EVEN IF I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE. AND IT DID IT MULTIPLE TIMES.
"CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM" WARNING MESSAGE CAME ON WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT NIGHT 01/08/2021. SUDDENLY NO POWER TO THE ENGINE. THE GAS PEDAL WASN'T WORKING. QUICKLY I PULL INTO THE HARD SHOULDER. THE CAR FAILED TO START THE ENGINE WITH THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE. THE CAR LOST POWER SHORTLY AFTER. (THE HAZARD LIGHT WASN'T WORKING. I CONTACTED 911 FOR EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE. PENNDOT TRUCK SHOWS UP AFTER AN HOUR TO COVER THE ROAD. ( TO PREVENT COLLISIONS.) I TOWED THE CAR TO A NEARBY DEALER. CONTACTED BY THE DEALER 3 DAYS LATER. THEY SAID IT WAS12V A BATTERY ISSUE AND IT'S FIXED. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY TO PICK UP THE CAR. I PAID $388 FOR REPLACING THE BATTERY. THE CAR WON'T START WITH THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE. I RAN INTO THE DEALER ASKED FOR AN EXPLANATION. THE WORSE THING IS THE DEALER NEVER RAN THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOR CODE OR ANYTHING AND ASSUMED IT'S FIXED. I DEMANDED A REFUND. I MADE A FEW CALLS TO CHECK THE STATUS OF SERVICE SINCE THEN. NO ONE HAS RETURNED MY CALL YET.
Dash cracking severely over Airbags...Hyundai refuses to address the problem even though they had a PRIOR RECALL for the Same Issue. The Spiderweb Cracking is severe enough I am concerned my airbags will deploy without warning. Leather in Limited Model Seats Cracks and Disintegrates so badly the Power Motor and Components are exposed and compromised.
MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON DUE TO THE PIPE LINES OVER HEATING I WAS TOLD AT AUTO ZONE THAT I NEEDED A WHOLE NEW FUEL TANK THE GAS LIGHT GOES IN AND OUT AS WELL AS THE ENGINE LIGHT GOES IN AND OUT
THERE HAVE BEEN PREVIOUS RECALLS FOR HYUNDAI VEHICLES REGARDING THE NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH/TRANSMISSION RANGE INHIBITOR FAILING TO WORK PROPERLY, BUT IT APPEARS THAT THIS PROBLEM EXTENDS TO VEHICLES OUTSIDE OF THE PREVIOUS RECALL WINDOW. THE 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA SE EXPERIENCES A SIMILAR DEFECT, AS SEARCHES ONLINE WILL INDICATE A HIGH NUMBER OF FORUM POSTS AND OTHER RESOURCES WHERE DRIVERS OUTLINE THEIR CONCERNS. SPECIFICALLY, ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS, THE CAR WILL FAIL TO DISPLAY A GEAR WHEN STARTING, SHOWING A BLANK SYMBOL ON THE DASH AND NOT ILLUMINATING THE GEAR SHIFT COLUMN. THIS LEAVES THE CAR UNABLE TO BE SHIFTED INTO ANY GEAR. IT APPEARS THAT A WIDE RANGE OF HYUNDAI VEHICLES HAVE BEEN EFFECTED BY FAULTY NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCHES, AND AS I MENTIONED SOME VEHICLE YEARS NEED TO BE RECALLED THAT WERE NOT PREVIOUSLY DONE SO IN THE LAST 'BATCH' OF RECALLS FOR THE SIMILAR ISSUE.
MY HEADLIGHTS KEEP GOING VERY DIMMED AND BRAKE LIGHTS CONSISTENTLY BURNING OUT IN MY CAR. I AM REPLACING THEM EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON OVER A YEAR.
THE CAR DIED WHILE EXITING THE INTERSTATE ONTO THE TURNPIKE. PULLED OVER AND ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE WITH NO SUCCESS. SMOKE BEGAN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND SOON THE CAR WAS ON FIRE.
TOOK OUR CAR IN FOR THE FUEL LINE RECALL IN SEPTEMBER 2020. SINCE OCTOBER WE HAVE BEEN SMELLING GAS HERE AND THERE. THIS PAST WEEK IT HASN'T GONE AWAY. FUEL IS NOW LEAKING FROM THE FUEL LINE THAT THEY ZIP TIED BACK TOGETHER. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY ONLY INSPECTED THE LINE AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE RESIDENCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
MY CAR STARTED MAKING A GROWING SOUND WHEN I PRESS THE GAS IT GETS LOUDER AND LOUDER AS I DRIVE . IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE A LAWN MOWER IT'S BEEN 3 DAYS NOW AND IT'S ALSO AS OF TONIGHT STRUGGLED TO TURN ON AND WHEN IT DID THE GROWING SOUND WAS EXAGGERATINGLY LOUD . SO IF I DRIVE IT SOUNDS BAD AND WHEN IT'S PARKED AND GETS TURNED ON THE SOUND IS BAD IT'S A LOSE LOSE
THERE IS RECALL 189 ON MY CAR (2014 2.0 TURBO) FOR A POSSIBLE LEAKING FUEL LINE DUE TO HEAT CAUSING CRACKS IN THE FUEL LINE. A "FIX" WAS PERFORMED IN JULY 2020 BY THE DEALERSHIP WHICH SEEMS TO BE WRAPPING THE FUEL LINE FROM WHAT I HAVE LEARNED. I STARTED SMELLING FUEL INTERMITTENTLY N THE FOLLOWING MONTHS,, BUT WASN'T DRIVING MY CAR MUCH SO LET IT SLIDE. ALSO MY FUEL MILEAGE AND PERFORMANCE WAS OFF. I RECENTLY STARTED DRIVING MY CAR MORE AND NOTICED THE SMELL WAS UNBEARABLE AT TIMES. AFTER DRIVING THE CAR I PULLED THE ENGINE COVER OFF AND FOUND FUEL DRIPPING ONTO THE VALVE COVER AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE PLASTIC QUICK DISCONNECT FUEL LINE THAT IS PART OF THE RECALL WAS LOOSE (I COULD PUSH IT IN AND OUT ON THE FUEL PUMP CONNECTOR) SINCE IT HAD LOST PRESSURE FROM THE FUEL LEAKING. IT WAS LEAKING BETWEEN THE QUICK DISCONNECT TO THE RUBBER ISOLATOR ON THE LINE (SEE PICS) AND WAS NOT CLEAR WHERE THE LEAK WAS, THOUGH FUEL WAS COVERING THE VALVE COVER TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR ON THE VALVE COVER SO SEEMED LIKE THE CONNECTOR/O RING WAS NOT THE LIKELY CAUSE. THE NEXT MORNING I STARTED THE CAR AND THERE WAS NOT A LEAK WHEN IT WAS COLD (AND THE FUEL LINE WAS PRESSURIZED), BUT AFTER DRIVING IT FOR A FEW MINUTES I CHECKED AND IT WAS DRIPPING FUEL AGAIN. I CONTACTED THE DEALER THAT PERFORMED THE RECALL AND THEY SAID TO BRING IT IN IMMEDIATELY. THEY LOOKED AT IT AND SAID THE LINE WAS BAD, BUT SINCE THE "RECALL FIX" HAD BEEN PERFORMED HYUNDAI CORPORATE WOULD NOT COVER THE FUEL LINE REPLACEMENT. LUCKILY THE DEALER SAID THEY WOULD AND THEY ARE CURRENTLY REPLACING IT. THE "RECALL FIX" THAT WAS PERFORMED WAS OBVIOUSLY INADEQUATE AND COULD HAVE LED TO A FIRE. WHY WASNT THE FUEL LINE JUST REPLACED UNDER THE RECALL ORIGINALLY????
I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON A HIGHWAY GOING NO MORE THAN 45 MPH AND ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND IT SHUT COMPLETELY OFF. I TRIED TO GET A JUMP BUT IT STILL DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. THERE WAS NO ENGINE LIGHTS OR ANYTHING ON MY DASHBOARD BESIDES ECO. THE CAR HASN'T HAD ANY ISSUES AT ALL. FOR SOME STRANGE REASON MY STEERING WHEEL BEEN LOCKING A LOT.
WHEN USING THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF
THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE THOUSANDS ARE HAVING WITH THIS MODEL 2014 SONATA. WHEN USING THE BLINKER, IT CAUSES THE HEADLIGHTS TO COMPLETELY SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. SOON AS THE BLINKER TURNS OFF IT KILLS THE HEADLIGHTS. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND HYUNDAI SEEMS TO BE IGNORING THIS ISSUE AND PRETENDING THEY'RE NOT HEARING OF IT OFTEN. I'VE HAD TO PULL OVER MANY TIMES UNTIL THE LIGHTS COME BACK ON. SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. CRUISE CONTROL ALSO DECIDES WHEN IT WANTS TO WORK. SOMETIMES ON STARTUP IT WORKS, SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. I BELIEVE IT HAS TO DO WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED. SOMETHING ODD ELECTRICALLY WITH THESE CARS. BUT THE BLINKER/HEADLIGHT ISSUE IS CAUSING WRECKS. THIS IS WILDLY DANGEROUS
WHEN MY BRAKE LIGHT BULB WENT OUT WE TRIED TO CHANGE IT. IT WAS MELTED INTO SOCKET. TOOK TO DEALER THEY SAID 250.00 FOR EACH SIDE. BOTH SIDES HAD MELTED IN. YOU DONT JUST REPLACE THE SOCKET U REPLACE WIRES AND ALL. 250.00 EACH SIDE EVERYTIME THEY GO OUT. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THIS HAPPENS IN ALL HYUNDAI MODELS AND YEARS. WHY ARE THEY NOT RECALLED?
