2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON Bought it used, 1 prior owner ~50K, very clean. Since is VERY well maintained (incl. oil changes). Periodic engine light off & on for no reason. NO other probs, no oil leaks EVER. All recalls done. Dealership checked 11/2021 when doing recall, didn't document, it's "a short in wiring", "expensive to fix" & blamed "not tightening gas cap"?! THEN...On freeway with no warning light, a loud "bang" noise heard, vehicle began shaking. Initially felt like flat tire, barely able to control, lost power but able to steer off highway, engine died. VERY, VERY dangerous situation in heavy traffic. During tow to dealership, found # to national recall center who assigned a case number & was told "it's being escalated nationally..a corporate case worker (CW) will call in 3-5 days". Told "tell dealership to give loaner car". No loaners b/c LONG waiting list. Corporate requested multiple exams & photos from dealership in search of "engine sludge" (shift blame technique "poor maintenance") none was found. Engine pictures pristine (per dealership) "like a new engine". Corporate even requested 1st owner records!? Diagnosis:"catastrophic engine failure" due to bearing failure, estimate ~$7K+ for new engine. Corporate offer: 80% of engine replacement cost w/parts warranty (1 yr/12K), no loaner car unless delay due to backorder. Owner gets to counter offer or discuss w/ CW whose role (apparently)is to negotiate w/owner. 3 wks, never rec'd call from anyone. Hrs, days, wks spent chasing elusive CW. "Cust. Care" answers "hello, what's VIN & mileage?". Forced to repeat same story over & over, finally learned CW out on PTO, no one reassigned (someone slipped w/ "we are SOO busy here"). Finally reached CW. Call #1: nice guy. Call #2: lied, blamed dealership, mean, shaming, told to quit calling, wasting HIS time. Take it or leave it on 80/20 deal to replace w/another Theta II (aka we never fixed our prob) engine. NEVER BUY HYUNDAI! SOMEONE COULD'VE DIED.
Air conditioning system was just replaced for $2000. A week later, car to a dealership for a recall. Two and a half weeks later, while driving, engine lights came on, hard to accelerate, then rattling noise from engine. My son was on way back to college and on a rural road with not too much traffic. He pulled over and was not able to restart car. Had to be towed to nearest town (between home and his school, about 1 1/2 hours from each). The repair shop said total engine failure. They investigated and not able to find a rebuilt engine because engine has too many problems and a used engine would be $8000 to install and would likely have same defect. The car only has 96,000 miles. We bought used, from a Hyundai dealership, with a good CarFax report. It was a safety problem because he could have been devastating if he was on a busy highway. Unfortunately, it happened in a scarcely populated area and he was stranded while it was getting dark waiting for the tow truck. No warning lights until time of engine breakdown. Car had just been seen at a service station and car dealership just days before breakdown. We cannot take chance of investing that much money into a car that would have same problem. Had to have car sold for scrap.

The check engine warning light was flashing. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the connecting rod and engine needed to be replaced. Additionally, cylinder #3 was blown. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 99,450.
At 139k miles, my wife was on her way to work when she stated she heard a knocking coming from the engine. On her way home the engine stalled out 3 times where she had to pull over and shut it off completely for a minute. By the time she made it home the vehicle was making a really bad knocking/ticking sound with the oil warning light flashing. I have not heard back from the dealership where it was towed to, but this is the same sort of rod bearing problem that plagued other vehicles from Hyundai in that 2012 range.
10/5/21Driving on interstate. Experienced sudden loss of power. Pulled to side of road and car completely stopped and shut down. No warning lights prior to incident. Vehicle routinely serviced and had full tank of gas. Mechanic stated catastrophic engine failure.
My 2012 Tucson engine, with 62,000 miles, locked up on 09/22/21 while I was on a trip, without warning & no check engine light came on. Luckily, I was able to coast to the small shoulder. It suddenly seized on a stretch of I15 in the mountains of the Mohave Desert. The engine completely stopped so suddenly that I was lucky I was able to coast to the shoulder. The shoulder was very narrow, so I was barely off a very busy highway, at night. The breakdown happened just before midnight. I was stuck on the side of the road as cars and trucks were flying by us, with little room to avoid hitting us. It took 4 hours to find someone who would tow my car. I was towed to Midas shop at a cost of $800. The Midas shop confirmed that my engine had seized, was full of oil, and no explanation for the engine seizing could be found. The only option was to replace the engine. I wanted a new one, but they could not find one. They found a "used" one from a 2012 Tucson, supposedly with 40,000 miles on it. The mechanic had to go to Huntington Beach to pick it up. He was amazed at the cost of the engine (much higher than they had paid for any other used engine). Ultimately the replacement cost $12,118.41. When I picked up my car on 10/15/21 I headed home to San Diego (170 miles). After approx 100 miles, the transmission suddenly stopped shifting into any gear. It would not come out of neutral. I was in a lane close enough to the shoulder to coast just far enough to get a few inches off the highway. Because it was a Friday evening, there were no auto shops open. I had no choice but to have the car towed to my house (70 miles) at a cost of $500. A local transmission shop diagnosed my transmission problem. It was due to failure of the part that pumps fluid into the transmission. Yet another problem that shouldn’t occur in a car with only 61,000 miles on it. The cost of the repair was $4,200. The failure of those parts put me in 2 very dangerous situations and cost me $20,000.
There are several issues with the rear doors. It started when the rear doors would not respond to being unlocked by the key fob. Then the rear hatch would not open without the back doors being unlocked first, which required (the rear doors) to be opened manually. Finally, the rear driver-side door will not open manually or otherwise; it is stuck shut. All of these issues are grave safety concerns that Hyundai should address.

The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Tucson. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V063000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer and had a recall remedy completed. The contact stated that three days later while driving 70 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. The contact stated that the low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to park at a nearby parking lot and checked the oil level and saw that the level was low. The contact added one-fourth of a quart of oil and restarted the vehicle but heard an abnormal noise. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000. The consumer stated the replacing the engine costs $12,000 and this is the 2nd vehicle destroyed with an oil incident. This has cost her 2 engines, oil change, and a engine switch.
Driver side front and rear doors will not lock or unlock while using the switch that locks and unlocks the doors from the inside of the car. The remote will lock and unlock all of the doors.

The contact stated moments later, a loud explosion came from the rear of the vehicle. The contact saw smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle stalled while driving to the side of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the engine needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced two years prior under NHTSA campaign number: 19V063000 (Engine and engine cooling) which the contact related to the failure. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled and entered into Limp Mode without warning. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V063000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) which she linked to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 141,000.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that while driving at 40 - 50 mph, the vehicle lost motive power without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and diagnosed as engine failure. The mechanic referred the contact to tow the vehicle to another independent mechanic who specialized in engine repair. The vehicle was then towed to the second independent mechanic where the vehicle remained. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was over 100,000.
My vehicle has stalled (died) several times on me in the last several months. This happens when I am pulling into traffic or stopping at a light, etc. and is a serious problem because it could cause me to be hit. I took the car to my licensed mechanic and he said there was metal in the variable timing hub...he put the new part on it and then changed the oil and took it for a test drive. On return it was rechecked and found to be full of metal shavings again. He stated I would need new engine because mine was falling apart. He checked for recalls and found that this problem was a recall on the Santa Fe and the Sonata but not for my Tuscon...this does not make sense as these vehicles basically have the same or similar engines. Check engine light and oil light came on and stayed on. I was advised by my mechanic to contact you with this problem. I believe Tuscons should be added to the recall list before lives are lost. I believe my car should be repaired by the dealership..I would appreciate any help you can give me on this
On 5/13/21 I took my vehicle to Preston Hyundai to complete 2 recall campaigns. Campaign 958 20-01-012H and Campaign 181 #19-01-012H. Part of the instructions for Campaign 181 (attached), states they must "Loosen the intake manifold stay bolts and remove the intake manifold stay. After the recalls were done, Preston checked my vehicle and there were no active . Also, my vehicle was working fine prior to the recalls that were done. Less than 2 weeks after Hyundai completed the engine oil recall campaign, my engine light came on. I took it back to Hyundai on 6/1/21 and they said the Intake Manifold was broken and needed replaced. I told them if was fine when I brought it in for the recall and they worked on it during the recall and therefore, needed to replace it. They refused. Hyundai said it would be $1149.76 to replace Intake Manifold and Ford said only the Intake Manifold Runner needs replaced and it would be $360.43 before tax to replace it. I am requesting that my Intake Manifold be replaced by Preston Hyundai or that they pay the $360.43 plus tax for Fairway Ford to replace the Intake Manifold Runner.

Additionally, the vehicle was experiencing excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was taken to the local service center who diagnosed that the engine oil was present inside the engine cylinder and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 137,000.
I HAVE A 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON AWD WITH 86,000 MILES ON IT. WHILE DRIVING IT RECENTLY COULD HEAR ENGINE RATTLE/KNOCKING NOISE. BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER AND AFTER TWO DAYS LOOKING AT IT, THEY SAID THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID THE DAMAGE IS IN THE LOWER PART OF THE ENGINE. THEY SAID SINCE I AM THE SECOND OWNER, MANUFACTURER WARRANTY DOES NOT APPLY. $9000 TO REPLACE ENGINE. RECALL FOR THIS ENGINE IN THE 2012 KIA WITH THE MANUFACTURER PAYS TO HAVE REPLACED, BUT NOT FOR SAME ISSUE UNDER THE HYUNDAI BRAND??
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 70 MILES AND HOUR AND FOR NO REASON I LOST POWER , THE OIL LIGHT AND BATTERY LIGHT FLASHED BRIEFLY AND THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OFF THE HIGHWAY. IT TURNED OFF. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED AGIN AND BABY IT TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION LESS THAN A MILE DOWN THE ROAD. MY HUSBAND TOLD ME TO JUST BABY IT HOME AND HE WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT IT. IT STARTED MAKING A TICKING SOUND. I DID GET IT HOME AND MY HUSBAND SAID MY ENGINE WAS SHOT. NOW I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE FOR A CAR THAT WAS RUNNING JUST FINE AND THEN ALL THIS WERID STUFF HAPPENS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. NOW WE HAVE A DEAD CAR THAT WE STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR. AND WE CAN'T AFFORD A NEW ENGINE PLUS THE LABOR TO PUT IT IN. NOW WE ARE TRYING TO FIND A NEW CAR.
MY AWD LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF- WHEN ON I DO NOT HAVE AWD AND IF IS A SERIOUS SAFETY MATTER. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO BE CHECKED AND WAS TOLD "OH AT TIMES YOU HAVE IT AND SOME TIMES YOU DON'T HAVE IT. MEANING AWD--THEN ANOTHER HYUNDAI DEALER INFORMED ME " OH NO PROBLEMS WHEN CHECKED ON DIAGNOSTIC". WELL WITH BEING SAID AS A NURSE , I FIND THIS UNACCEPTABLE -- ONLY 70 SOME MILES AND NOW I'M TOLD THE WARRANTY CRITERIA HAS CHANGED. PLEASE HELP AND ADVISE. YOUR WARRANTY WAS A BIG DECISION MAKER IN MY DECISION TO PURCHASE. WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, A CLICKING OR CLACKING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE ENGINE, THE VEHICLE THEN SEEMED TO SUDDENLY LOOSE POWER THEN STALL. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO COAST THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A PARKING LOT. WITH THE VEHICLE PARKED, FOUND OIL POURING FROM UNDER THE ENGINE AND ALSO SAW A LONG TRAIL OF OIL LEADING FROM THE HIGHWAY TO THE VEHICLE. ALSO FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL AND DEBRIS FROM THE BROKEN ENGINE BLOCK CAUGHT IN THE PLASTIC SHROUD UNDER THE ENGINE.
Noticed a knocking had started and soon after the car stalled on the freeway. Towed to mechanic and then dealership. Engine failure. Metal shavings found in oil. Failed rod bearing.
I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL ON NOV. 27TH ON THE VEHICLE. I MADE AN APPT WITH A HYUDAI DEALER FOR SERVICE. ON DEC. 2 I WAS DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP ON A CITY ROAD, AFTER ACCELERATING FROM A STOPLIGHT STOP, THE ENGINE BLEW. LUCKILY WE WERE ALL AT A LOW SPEED AS THE LIGHT HAD JUST GONE GREEN. DEALERSHIP SAYS IT THREW A ROD THROUGH BLOCK AND SENT ME A PICTURE. THIS CAR HAS THE THETA II ENGINE. MY MODEL AND YEAR HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED IN THE RECALLS NOR LAWSUITS FOR THE ISSUE THE ENGINE IS HAVING IN OTHER MODELS, BUT THIS ENGINE HAD ONLY 80K, HAS BEEN REGULARLY SERVICED, AND I CANT IMAGINE WHAT ELSE WOULD CAUSE SUCH A THING OTHER THAN A MANUFACTURING DEFECT LIKE THE ONE I AM READING ABOUT WITH THE DEBRIS.
HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED ON THE CITY STREET. THE MECANIC HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE DUE TO THE ENGINE ISSUE. SUBMITTED A CLAIM TO HYUNDAI- CAMPAIGN181 IN JANUARY WITH NO RESPONSE.
I WAS DRIVING AND THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A CLICK CLICK NOISE. IT SOUNDED TERRIBLE LIKE THERE WERE ROCKS RATTLING AROUND AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE AND LOST POWER. THE VEHICLE BROKE DOWN AND I HAD TO FIND A TO AND RENTAL CAR TO GET HOME. HYUNDAI SERVICE SAID I NEED A NEW ENGINE, BECAUSE THE ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDED REPLACED. I KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THE HYUNDAI ENGINES AND I CALLED THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FLAT OUT TOLD ME THAT MY NGINE WAS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY AND THEREFORE THEY COULD NOT HELP. I AM NOT READY TO HAVE TO GET A NEW VEHICLE, SPECIALLY IN THIS COVID SITUATION. I HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH A 2003 TUSCON SANTA FE...THIS ENGINE FAILURE ISSUE IS A SCAM.

THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SOUNDED AS IF THE MOTOR HAD BEEN BLOWN. THE CONTACT HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V063000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, IT WAS FOR CHANGING AN OIL PAN GASKET AND THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH, NOT THE ENGINE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 112,000.
I RECEIVED THE RECALL OF MY 2012 HYUNDAI TUSCON. AS A PRECAUTION I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO ADDRESS THE RECALL 181 AND AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE I HAD WITH THE POWER WINDOWS. I VISITED THE DEALER TWO WEEKS APART AND SAT AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR MORE THAN 5 HOURS WITH THE SECOND VISIT BEING FOR 8 HOURS. I WAS TOLD SOMETHING WAS LEAKING IN STEERING AND THAT HAD TL BE FIXED. I LEFT WITH MY CAR AND APPROXIMATELY 8 DAYS LATER THERE WAS A CLICKING AND CLANKING AOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE, IVE NEVER HEARD THE SOUND, YET ON MY PAPERWORK IT STATED I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SOUND, WHICH I NEVER DID. MY CAR STARTED TO STALL AND LOSE SPEED. I WAS OVER 100 MILES FROM HOME AND MY CAR WAS FAILING IN THE MOUNTAINS AT THAT. I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MULTIPLE TIMES AND NEVER RECEIVED A CALL BACK. THANK GOD FOR MY INSURANCE TOWING THE CAR TO THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP. A DAY AND HALF LATER I WAS TOLD THE ENGINE WAS GONE! I VISITED THE DEALERSHIP ON 07/31/20 & 08/14/20... THEY DOCUMENTED A RATTLING RATTLING SOUND IN THE FRONT IN... NEVER ADDRESSED ME ABOUT THIS 'SOUND' , DID A SO CALL INSPECTION OF THE CAR AND NEXT THING I AM TOLD IS I CANT DRIVE IT BECAUSE THE ENGINE COULD BLOW. NO RETURN FROM HYUNDAI SERVICE MANAGER, NO CLAIM FILED AND I AM STILL OUT OF STATE WITHOUT AN ANSWER. CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE SAT ONLINE 30 MINS WAITING FOR A REP BEFORE THEIR LINE DISCONNECTED AND THEM ANOTHER HOUR. FILED A CASE AND NOW STILL STUCK WAITING FOR THESE PEOPLE TO DO THEIR JOB WITH OUT PUTTING MY LIFE AT RISK.
I WAS DRIVING AND THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A NOISE. ALL OF A SUDDEN IT SOUNDED TERRIBLE LIKE THERE WERE ROCKS RATTLING AROUND IN THE ENGINE AND IT SHUT DOWN. I WAS INITIALLY IN TOWN WHEN IT STARTED AND JUST GOT ON THE HWY WHEN SHE BROKE DOWN. HUBBY, TWO PUPPIES, AND I WERE STRANDED IN THE SIDE OF THE HWY IN 100 DEGREE HEAT FOR 2 HRS. HAD TO RENT A MOVING TRUCK AND TRAILER TO MAKE THE TREK BACK HOME TO GA. HYUNDAI SERVICE SAID IT THREW A ROD AND SHREDDED IN THE ENGINE AND THE ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDED REPLACED. MINIMUM OF $5500 FOR THE ENGINE ITSELF. I SWITCHED TO SYNTHETIC OIL ON THE FIRST CHANGE WHEN I GOT HER NEW AND WAS REGULAR WITH HER MAINTENANCE. I WAS NOT READY TO HAVE TO GET A NEW VEHICLE JUST YET.
ENGINE SEIZED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CAR WAS AT HYUNDAI GETTING RECALLS DONE ONLY WEEKS BEFORE SEIZING.
WAS DRIVING MY 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON WHEN IT SUDDENLY DIED AT A STOPLIGHT. IT WOULDN'T RESTART. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY TO RESTART IT NOTHING HAPPENED, NO CLICKING, IT DIDN'T TURN OVER AT ALL. CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD THEM TOW IT TO OUR LOCAL FIRESTONE. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC ON IT AND THE ONLY THING THEY COULD SEE WAS THAT THE STARTER WASN'T WORKING. THEY REPLACED THE STARTER AND AFTER STRUGGLING TO GET IT TO START EVEN WITH THE NEW STARTER IT CLANGED AND BANGED AND THEN DIED AGAIN ONCE THEY WERE ABLE TO GET IT STARTED. I CHECKED ONLINE AND SAW THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. THEY LOOKED AT THE CAR AND SAID IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AND THAT THE DAMAGE WAS NOT RELATED TO THE RECALL. I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND PURCHASED THE CAR USED FROM THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO WHEN IT HAD APPROX. 57K MILES ON IT. IT NOW HAS APPROX. 80K MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS WELL MAINTAINED. I CHANGE THE OIL REGULARLY. BEFORE THIS THERE WERE NO ISSUES. HYUNDAI AND THE DEALER TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY AND SAY THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE TO PAY FOR THE NEW ENGINE.
IN OCTOBER 2019 I TOOK MY CAR TO HYUNDAI TO HAVE THEM SERVICE FOR THE ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING RECALL. THEY REPLACED THE PART AND I WAS ON MY WAY. I SERVICED MY CAR REGULARLY, AND JUST TWO WEEKS AFTER MY LAST OIL CHANGE I WAS DRIVING 70MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE CAR STARTED SPUTTERING AND THEN COMPLETELY DIED. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET PULLED OVER WHERE I ATTEMPTED TO START IT AGAIN AND IT MADE A LOUD KNOCK AND THEN WOULDN'T START. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A NEARBY MECHANIC WHO SAID THE ENGINE HAD A HUGE HOLE IN IT. I ASKED IF IT COULD BE THAT THE FOLKS WHO CHANGED MY OIL MESSED SOMETHING UP, BUT HE SAID IT WAS UNLIKELY BECAUSE THERE WAS OIL IN THE ENGINE AND THAT IT WAS MORE LIKELY SOMETHING FAULTY IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THE CAR OR POTENTIALLY DUE TO THE RECALL SERVICE NOT BEING DONE PROPERLY. SO I DID SOME RESEARCH AND THERE ARE TONS OF OTHER 2012 HYUNDAI TUCSON OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. I THEN SAW THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FOR SIMILAR ISSUES, HOWEVER THE 2012 MODELS WEREN'T INCLUDED IN THE LAWSUIT. THIS IS CLEARLY SOMETHING THAT HYUNDAI NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND INCLUDE THIS MODEL IN THE LAWSUIT, OR AT THE VERY EAST MAKE RIGHT AND FIX THESE ENGINES AT NO COST AND PAY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE AND EXPENSES INCURRED FOR RENTALS, TOWING, AND TIME AWAY FROM WORK.

TAKE A CAR TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, LEFT THERE FOR COUPLE DAYS, THEN RESILT IS COMING? CAR NEEDS A FULL ENGINE . I HAVE MAINTAINED MY CAR WITH OIL CHANGES AND THE CAR HAS 56700 MILES. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF FAILURE OF THE THETA II 2.4 LITER ENGINES, WHICH MY CAR HAS, YET NO RECALL ISSUES. CAR THEN TOWED TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP, CAR NEEDS A FULL ENGINE REBUILD. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY CAR WITH OIL CHANGES AND THE CAR HAS 100086 MILES. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF FAILURE OF THE THETA II 2.4 LITER ENGINES, WHICH MY CAR HAS, YET NO RECALL ISSUES. DRIVING ALONG THE INTERSTATE WHEN ENGINE HAD REDUCED ENGINE POWER FOR A MOMENT, THEN STALLED AROUND 70MPH. MADE IT TO AN EXIT RAMP LUCKILY. ENGINE HESITATED TO RESTART, ONCE IT DID START ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING AND HAD NEXT TO NO POWER. TOWED TO HYUNDAI DEALER, HYUNDAI DEALER STATED THAT HYUNDAI HAS HAD MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THESE ENGINES AND HYUNDAI SHOULD COVER IT FULLY. DEALERSHIP PROCEEDED TO PULL OIL PAN AND VALVE COVER WITHOUT OUR CONSENT AND WITH NO COMMUNICATION FOR DAYS. CONFIRMED THE ENGINE WAS BAD, METAL SHAVINGS IN OIL PAN, ROD BEARINGS FAILED. COMMON PROBLEM. WAITING ON HYUNDAI FOR APPROVAL. SERVICE ADVISOR QUIT, WE WERE INFORMED 6 DAYS LATER THAT HYUNDAI IS ONLY WILLING TO COVER 65% OF COST AND WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY 35% ($3,500.0) OUT OF POCKET. WE REFUSED TO PAY; THEY STATED WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY DIAGNOSIS, BUT THEY ENDED UP WAIVING THAT. TECHNICIANS DID NOT FULLY SECURE OIL PAN OR VALVE COVER. OIL UNDER CAR WHERE IT WAS PARKED, HAVE PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO BACK THIS CLAIM UP. HAVE RENTAL CAR AND MANY TOW BILLS IN TO THE MIX NOW. WHY WOULD THE DEALER TELL US HYUNDAI FULLY COVER THIS BUT THEY DON'T? WE NEED THIS ISSUE FIXED. MANY OTHER TUCSON OWNERS DEAL WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, WITH THE SAME ENGINE AS THE OTHER CARS, BUT THEIRS GET REPLACED FREE OR CHARGE AND EXPENSES PAID BY HYUNDAI.

DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ENGINE CUTS SHUTS OFF. I LET THE CAR ROLL TO THE FIRST OFF RAMP IN WHICH I COULD NOT START THE CAR AGAIN. STUCK IN MIDDLE LANE OF EXIT UNTIL I GOT HELP TO PUSH CAR TO SIDE OF THE ROAD.
WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE MECHANIC TESTED THE CAR AND HEARD A TAPPING NOISE WHEN STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR. THE MECHANIC NOTED THAT THERE WERE LARGE METAL SHARDS IN OIL PAN. THE SHARDS WERE NOT PRESENT IN THE OIL WHEN OIL WAS DRAINED OUT. THE METAL SHARDS WERE ONLY VISIBLE ONCE THE OIL PAN WAS REMOVED. THE MECHANIC COMPLETED ADDITIONAL INSPECTION TO ENSURE THERE WERE NO OTHER ISSUES. AFTER REMOVING THE OIL PUMP, HE FOUND ALL THE ROD BEARINGS HAD PLAY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A MANUFACTURE DEFECT. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR AND HE TOLD ME THAT A NUMBER OF THEIR CUSTOMERS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, BUT THE 2012 HYUNDAI ENGINE WAS NOT ON RECALL. BASED ON RESEARCH, WE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL 2.4 LITER ENGINES ON ALL PLATFORMS FOR KIA AND HYUNDAI. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER AND WERE TOLD WE NEEDED TO PURCHASE A NEW REDESIGNED ENGINE. DURING THIS CONVERSATION, WE WERE NOTIFIED THE NEW ENGINE HAS ENGINE ROD BEARINGS THAT ARE MORE STURDY. HYUNDAI CURRENTLY HAS A RECALL FOR THE OIL PAN AND ALSO HAS RECALLS FOR ENGINES IN OTHER CAR MODELS BUT NOT THIS MODEL. A NEW ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED FOR AN 7 YEAR OLD CAR WITH 80,000 MILES. AS A CAR PROFESSIONAL, I SUSPECT THIS IS DUE TO THE ISSUES WITH A DEFECTIVE ROD BEARINGS THAT WEAR PREMATURELY AND RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE SO THE ENGINES SHOULD BE COVERED IN THE RECALL.
On [XXX], Gas pedal failed to accelerate car while transitioning from [XXX\ on-ramp to the highway lane. Was able to steer car to shoulder before momentum dissipated. Warning lights for oil and motor were illuminated on dash. No power steering. Turned off motor. Restarted car eventually. Warning lights not illuminated. Gas pedal worked. Drove about 30 minutes to dealer. Hyundai did agree to replace motor and I paid a fraction of the cost ([XXX]). Since then, they have agreed to reimburse me for my cost. However, an oil leak was detected at the dealer two months ([XXX]) after receiving the car + rebuilt motor. Dealer has tried 4 more times to fix the VERY slow oil leak. Leak is still not fixed. Service dept now not returning my call (2/2/2023). Have called Hyundai customer care 800# and obtained a case number. VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY DOES NOT ACCELERATE FROM A STOP, OFTEN LOOSES POWER. THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS IF PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. TRANSMISSION ISSUES HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED WITH OTHER YEARS, BUT THIS ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED WITH EARLIER MODEL YEARS. WHILE TURNING INTO TRAFFIC, VEHICLE DID NOT ACCELERATE AS EXPECTED ALMOST CAUSE IT AN ACCIDENT. TOOK VEHICLE TO HYUNDAI FOR SERVICE, AND THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED AT THE TIME, INSTEAD WAS TOLD TO 'CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID, THAT MAY HELP' THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE OTHER TUCSON'S WITH THE SAME ISSUE. VEHICLE CONTINUES TO HAVE SAME ISSUES.
DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED WITHOUT ANY NOTICE ENGINE QUIT HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF A VERY BUSY HIGHWAY. PER THE RECALL NOTICE, THE ENGINE OIL PAN COULD LEAK AND, IF NOT ADDRESSED, THE LOSS OF OIL MAY RESULT IN ENGINE DAMAGE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THE VEHICLE IN REGARDS TO THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,163.
