The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was topping off the oil weekly. The failure had become more persistent. While driving 65 MPH, the vehicle started shaking and was making a knocking sound at the front-end by the engine compartment. The check engine warning light was flashing. The contact coasted to the side of the road and checked the oil level. The oil level was low, and the contact added oil to the vehicle. The contact restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle began shaking, making a knocking sound from the front end, and there was white smoke coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was turned off, the smoke ceased, and the vehicle was left parked in the parking lot at work. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.
See attached document for complaint.
My car has been burning oil for over a year. there is no leak. I have been putting three quarts in every 4 to 6 weeks. I have now replaced two coil packs and the spark plugs. my engine light is on because it said 3 and 4 was misfiring so i recently replaced those coil packs and now it said spark plug and i replaced it again as well. so the engine light coming on and what it says the problem is is wrong. now when i push the gas it is knocking or missing. not sure how to describe it. no one has looked at it other than a friend that is a mechanic and he says its probably the engine because this kind of car has these problems.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed uphill, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The check engine oil warning light was illuminated. The vehicle hesitated, and the contact pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The contact stated that there was oil leaking from the exhaust pipe. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
Power windows will go down by driver buttons but driver buttons will not work to make windows go back up. Engine is stalling, can smell exhaust, manifold is said to be needed to be replaced. Burns oil badly.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while the accelerator pedal was depressed. The check engine and check engine oil warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local service shop where it was diagnosed with engine knock. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced due to the knocking coming from the engine. The local dealer advised the contact that parts for the repair were not available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.
In February of 2025, my oil lamp warning light came on. My husband checked the oil dipstick and noticed that it didn't have any oil on it. There was a visible burn mark as well. I called my local Hyundai dealer to schedule an appointment to see why my car was burning oil like that as it was not due for an oil change. The appointment was made for February 20, 2025. My car at that time had 79,803 miles on it. The Hyundai dealer suggested performing an engine combustion cleaning service, per Hyundai, to see if it would "fix" the problem. They also went ahead and did an oil change. After these services were done, I was told to bring the car back in after 1,000 miles. Hyundai's guidelines are that they allow 1 quart of oil loss per every 1,000 miles. I brought the car back to the Hyundai dealer after 1,000 miles and that was in April of 2025. I was told that my vehicle passed the inspection. The oil level on the dipstick was in the "normal range." After a few weeks, my husband checked the oil level again just to make sure the engine wasn't burning any additional oil since we were not convinced that the engine combustion cleaning service solved the problem. He checked it on May 11, 2025. The dipstick showed that it was below the L. I called the Hyundai dealer once again, and they were able to get me in on Tuesday, May 13th. My mileage was 81,792 on the day I brought it back in. They confirmed that it had burned over 2 quarts of oil in less than 2,000 miles. That is more oil consumption than Hyundai "allows" per their 1 quart of oil for every 1,000 miles rule. The dealer put in a request to Hyundai for a new engine replacement and I was denied due to my vehicle having no warranty.
RIGHT REAR PASSENGER DOOR WILL NOT OPEN WHEN ACTUATING HANDLES INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. UNABLE TO REMOVE CHILD OR ALLOW PASSANGERS SAFE EXIT OF VEHICLE. IF YOU PULL THE HANDLES TWICE OR SIX TIMES IT WILL SOMETIMES OPEN. INTERMITTANT ISSUE, ACUATORS ALL APPEAR TO WORK AND BE IN GOOD CONDITION.
The vehicle suffered extreme oil consumption while under the 'famed' 100k mile warranty. Tests were performed at the dealership confirming excessive oil consumption. Hyundai USA refused to service the issue claiming my personal service records did not meet their standards of responsible maintenance. At 108k miles the engine failed while on the interstate in CO. Cylinder 2 had blown and the dealership noted the towed vehicle was low in oil. The engine failure is a direct result of excessive oil consumption, something that hyundai has been aware of and has chosen to fight against owners damaged vehicles, rather than remedy the issue. Hyundai has faced class action suits and settled on these, yet still has not admitted fault. This issue poses a safety hazard for owners who may suffer catastrophic engine failure while driving.
My engine has been burning oil. The engine light has been on for just over the past year because an O2 sensor in the catalytic converter needs replacing, however, this is unrelated to the issue. The oil light started flickering earlier this year (approx 8 months ago) but would never stay on. I called my mechanic and they recommended I check the oil. Sure enough it needed oil. Since then I have had to continuously add oil in between oil changes, however, the oil light rarely comes on or flickers to indicate this need, I just need to check. The engine has been making a ticking sound and that gets louder or worse I have noticed as the engine burns the oil. I have read up on other 2017 Hyundai Tucsons having the same engine failures and that some are covered under recall but mine does not seem to be. My mechanic has informed me that the engine needs to be rebuilt in order to fix the problem. I am worried about the car dying on me or causing an accident because of the failing engine. Yes, this problem has been confirmed by my mechanic.
The engine entered limp mode, lost oil pressure and began knocking. Vehicle was brought to a dealer where it remained for ~1 month. The dealer inspected the vehicle, and determined it to be a valve cover leak, which does not track given the issues. When picked up from the dealer, the engine seized shortly down the road. Upon my own inspection, it was found that the engine oil drain plug was missing. It is unclear if the dealer loosened the drain plug during their inspection, or if it fell out due to some other issue. In either case, the manufacturer and their representative (dealership) created a dangerous situation for the driver of that vehicle, which had to be pushed out of moving traffic during a busy time of day.
A knocking noise from the engine. The dealership is refusing to give us a warranty for the rebuilt of the engine that we will be covering 40% of the cost. Is this possible? For us to spend approximately $7K and not get a warranty on the work done?
UNKNOWN There is a issue with paint on the car. The paint is white and is chipping on hood, top of car and back of car. The car looks terrible with a cheap paint job.
1. After driving the car and turning it off, I get a loud bang coming from a gas tank. 2. Sometimes when making a hard right or left turn steering wheel vibrates, and the warning light for all wheel drive system comes on. When I turn the car off and restart it, it goes away. 3. After software installs due to recalls, when I accelerate my radio occasionally shuts off on its own, and then we’ll come back on on its own. 4. After turning the car off when I restart it occasionally the clock in calendar revert to 00:00 for the time and the date resets to 1/1/20.
I had my oil changed at a Hyundai dealership at 102,000 miles however even before the next oil change was due my engine had a bearing failure. The dealership could not fix my car for months and that I should find another Hyundai dealership to fix the issue. The next dealership told me that the cost was $14000k to fix and that the engine had oil sludge buildup. My Carfax report is shows consistent and provable oil maintenance every 3K - 4K miles. The engine had been consuming oil which I report to the dealership but sine there was not any check engine light they did not do anything about the consumption problem. I have not yet had the vehicle inspected by independent mechanic or anyone else. no warning lights ever came on that alerted me to low oil.
Engine knocking began around 132,000 miles and caused intermittent loss of power while driving. This caused me to slow down at random intervals while on the roadway becoming a hazard for other drivers. Engine light activated shortly before the symptoms began. No inspections done yet.
Within last oil change the engine had oil consumption and has a loud engine knocking sound. The upcoming oil change date had not been exceeded and/or miles had not been exceeded. The engine knock caused me to pull over immediately at a location on a highly traveled road and no shoulder or safe spot which was dangerous. Safety was a concern because I had to wait for a tow truck in cold winter weather. The local Hyundai dealership maintenance person said it was a known issue with that make and model and the repair wait time is 5 months because they don't have enough staff and cannot get parts. My tuscan just had an inspection at the last oil change on 10/22/2024. no report from Hyundai that the oil level was an issue or engine having problems. There not any warning lights or low level lights and/or noises until it suddenly happened.
So in December of 2022 the vehicle above was recalled for Service Campaign 966 by hyundai and was completed. In 2024 it had the same issues again and the knock sensor was replaced twice in 2024. We just purchased the vehicle in January 2025 and know are having the same issuse and code showing the knock sensor is having issues. We reported it to the dealer we purchased from long hyundai of chattanooga and they aren't helping to resolve the issue. All they did before we bought it was say it had a weak battery and supposedly replaced the battery.
The vehicle is experiencing severe engine shaking and misfiring during operation. Initial diagnostics confirmed that the spark plugs and ignition coils are functioning correctly and are not the source of the problem. A compression test revealed that two cylinders have no compression, indicating a likely internal engine failure. Potential causes include damaged or worn piston rings, valves, or a blown head gasket. This condition results in rough idling, reduced power, poor drivability, and potential long-term engine damage if not addressed promptly. Immediate engine repair or replacement is required.
The transmission in my vehicle failed while driving and the car completely shut off while driving. Less than 4 months after replacing the transmission with a brand new transmission, the engine failed while driving on the highway. The engine started sputtering, then it started smoking, then the car stalled.
KSDS system continuously going off saying the knock sensor needs to be replaced and puts the car in limp mode. The car continuously going into limp mode even after knock sensor is replaced.
My car is experiencing trouble accelerating, making it difficult to drive. Every time I come to a complete stop at a stop sign, my car struggles to regain speed. This issue becomes particularly dangerous on the expressway, as I can’t accelerate at a decent speed to merge onto the expressway, which poses a risk to both me and other drivers.
There is an intermittent problem with the transmission. It’s impossible to predict when the transmission will slip. When navigating traffic, it has happened multiple times trying to pull out across oncoming traffic, and the transmission begins slipping so badly in a couple of instances nearly causing a side impact. There are no recalls related to this, but the dealership confirms it is common… the fact that it is intermittent makes it worse. You get used to the transmission performing as it should… Next thing you know it slips when you can’t afford for it to slip..
I am constantly having to add oil to my car. It burns oil. It is not leaking oil. I have 81000 miles on my car. I get my oil changed regularly.
My harmonic balancer went bad after 120,000 miles causing my camshaft pully to shear off and a bolt to come loose causing me to have to replace my entire engine. I was told by my mechanic that this is a very rare occurring issue. Could this have happened because of a faulty harmonic balancer?
I was using the access road to get on the highway but when I tried to accelerate the car was slow to accelerate and I almost got hit by other cars. I don’t know what happened but now I have a steady check engine light. When I called a mechanic he said I have a TSB from 2021 for the Dual Clutch but I didn’t see anything for this and my SaferCar app doesn’t mentions it either.
My car hesitates when leaving a stop sign or light. It is random and I have no power to continue. If I put car in park than go sometimes it works, sometimes push down on gas more or sometimes I have to turn car off than back on. 2 near miss accidents
My check engine light randomly started blinking and lost power. While driving
Without any warning, the engine stalled out going through an intersection.
I am writing to report a serious issue with my 2017 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0 that poses potential safety risks. The vehicle is consuming more than 4 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles, which is far beyond normal and acceptable levels. The car has approximately 166,000 miles on it and has been regularly maintained, including timely oil changes. Despite proper maintenance, this excessive oil consumption leads to frequent low-oil warnings, risking sudden engine failure if not continuously monitored. This creates an unsafe driving condition, particularly on highways or during long trips, as the engine could seize without warning. Additionally, I am aware that many other owners of Hyundai vehicles with similar engines have reported comparable issues. This suggests a widespread defect in the engine design or manufacturing process. I am requesting the NHTSA to investigate this matter further to determine if a recall, warranty extension, or other corrective action is necessary to address this issue. Hyundai should be held accountable for resolving this problem, especially since it compromises the safety and reliability of the vehicle. Vehicle Information: Year: 2017 Make: Hyundai Model: Tucson SEL Engine: 2.0L VIN: [Your Vehicle Identification Number here] Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope for a prompt investigation and resolution to ensure the safety of all Hyundai Tucson owners.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated that several months after purchasing the vehicle, the vehicle was shaking abnormally while started. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there was an abnormal amount of carbon build up on the valves and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
2017 Tucson no engine light came on no oil gauge light came on.Never received engine recall notice but engine rod bearing rubbing .Car is now Un drivable as it needs new engine
Under 40,000 took vehicle in to check because of hesitation when accelerating. They checked and could not duplicate issue so sent me on my way. Reached 70,000 and hesitation is worse. Getting and merging on highway, turning from stop, and feels like it’s going to stall when going up inclines. No incident yet just notifying maybe something wrong with other peoples.
There is metal shards in the oil from the engine. The oil burns up within a week or so. The guy at the oil change place said it was common in these make and model cars and I need a new engine. It can stall or catch fire which can pose a risk to me and/or other cars on the road. I drive around with a [XXX] son it's my daily car and the engine is not good. We are constantly having to put oil in it. Other vehicles from this company have been recalled for the same issue. Please have it inspected and fixed. My transmission has failed fully. It cannot even reverse. I took my car into Hyundai several times to check on the issue and they said the same thing, that the transmission slipping is a standard issue for dual clutch. I told them over and over that this is different. I did some research as to how to have them cover it and have it changed but the dealership said nothings wrong. Fast forward and now my cars transmission is fully gone and it probably won’t be covered when I know that it should have been part of the recall ! Just this year I’ve spent $5000 on repairs for this vehicle and now I’m looking at another $5000 for only a 7 year old vehicle. If that does not constitute a lemon I don’t know what does.
I was driving on [XXX] and the acceleration just started to drastically slow down. I was able to get to the shoulder where the car completely died and wouldn’t cut back on and I had it towed to South Bay Hyundai in Torrance. They said it’s engine failure but they haven’t completed the full inspection yet. I have been using Uber and need a car rental because I can’t afford to sustain this huge inconvenience indefinitely. The car suddenly stopped accelerating. There were no signs that something was wrong prior. I was driving on the highway when I felt a loss of power, then my check engine light started blinking. The car entered “limp mode” and the engine started knocking. The code it was showing was for a knock sensor, I replaced that and it still would not accelerate. There is something wrong with the rod bearings and I was told by the dealership that this is a common problem with the type of engine they use in these vehicles.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. The battery warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the spark plugs. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V727000 (Engine); but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 86,000.
Since reaching approximately 79,000 miles on my vehicle (which I am the original owner of), I have noticed excessive oil consumption. Over the course of 3,000 miles between oil changes, the vehicle consumed about 4 quarts of oil, and the oil lamp came on. Additionally, I consistently experience the smell of burning oil inside the cabin whenever I back in or out of parking spaces/my garage, which poses a health risk. Beyond the health concerns, there are potential consequences, including engine damage, fire risks, reduced performance, and with that, an increased likelihood of accidents. While Hyundai acknowledges that this is a known issue, they have done little to offer a proper solution, merely attempting to keep the consumption within barely acceptable limits. Thank you for taking note of this problem.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Tucson. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled with no warning light illuminated. The contact did not have to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,964.
Greetings, I have had issues with the Hyundai Tucson 2017 I own for many months. Issues include among others an abnormal knocking noise from the engine, reduced engine power and/or hesitation, burning smell, oil leaking, and smoke coming out of the engine, misfires, and other issues. It happened many times on the highway and almost caused accidents and the last time it happened, the vehicle was towed, and recently the smoke coming from the engine forced me to pull over. I reported the issue to the dealer but they didn't recall or address the issue. The car has been maintained properly over time and now I fear for my life. It is totally unfair that about 100k of this brand have been recalled for the same issue, in my case it is just after I finished to pay in full the vehicle. I seek your support to have it addressed for safety
Rear driver side door suddenly will not open from outside or inside. A rear passenger would be essentially trapped in the car should an incident/accident happen. I googled and it seems this is a well known issue affecting several model years of Hyundai, including my 2017 model. I do not see a recall for this extremely dangerous issue.
I change the oil every 2000 miles and use what it states. Second oil change that noticed the oil drained out of the vehicle was close to nothing. First of all no warning indication oil was that low. It vibrates when it’s still and when you accelerate it tugs. Took it to the dealership where purchased extended warranty. Temporary fix is combustion cleaning with re seat piston rings then a valve cleaning and pcv replacement. Permanent solution replace the engine which warranty won’t cover since it’s technically not broken. Charging me ridiculous amount money for temporary fix. What if the oil goes else where or doesn’t notified low oil. It can catch on fire or all of sudden stops. I have my two babies with me in the car always it’s our family car. Vehicle has been inspected by dealership not inspected by police insurance representatives or others. No indication no warning signs pop up of low oil. It’s consuming too much oil which it’s going to other places in the engine which can cause fire risk. I’m trying to prevent the engine cause a fire or risk to myself or my family.
All of the lights on the dashboard and check engines light were illuminated. The speedometer would not work and the stick shift would stick in park causing me to have to release the shift lock manually to drive. The failure mileage was 59,450.
Engine light notification was not present before, during or after the complete engine failure of the vehicle while driving. Per dealership, they are unable to find a replacement motor and are going to rebuild the engine.
See attached document for complaint.
1- I purchased a 2017 Hyundai from CarMax in Edison, NJ 2- Within one month the car broke down, choking and not being able to go highway speeds 3- Brought it to Goodyear, (CarMax’s repair provider for their warranty). They replaced the ignition coils, engine modules-coils, performed a GDI/PFI 2-step fuel system cleaning, (known as Top Engine Cleaning. They replaced the spark plugs and the engine air and cabin filters. The engine was clogged with carbon deposits. 4- 7 Months later the same thing happened and the same work was done by Pep Boys. 5- Two to three weeks later it happened again. The work was guaranteed so they “fixed” it again. They also said the engine was low by 2 1/2 quarts and there was a problem with that engine, I should check with Hyundai. 6- I was told by Hyundai’s corporate office to go to one of their dealerships and get an Oil Consumption Test, which consist of an oil change and then have it tested after 1,000 miles. I will get 2 - 4 test before a determination is made. 7- The car failed the first test, having consumed 2 1/2 quarts of oil within a 1,000 miles. 8- I was told I had to get a Top Engine Cleaning, (the 3rd one within 13 months), before I can continue the test. 9- I get the engine cleaned for, $1,434.11 then resumed testing. 10- The car failed again and I was told by Corporate that they are dropping my claim because the car has too many miles and is too old! From the very beginning they knew the year of the car and the mileage. I am being defrauded and I’m now stuck with paying a $485.90 car note along with a $269 a month insurance bill for a car that was no good from the very beginning! Please,I need your help to hold Hyundai responsible for their promise to give me a new engine after following the steps they required of me, and/or holding CarMax responsible for selling me a car with an engine that is no good. This has cost me thousands of dollars on top of what I’m paying for the car!
The engine developed a knocking sound at 97,018 miles. When it was checked, it did not have any oil in it at all, regardless of there not being an oil leak in the system. The car received regular service. When we took it to Hyundai they did a test and confirmed that it was burning oil. This engine malfunction put my [XXX] daughter, the primary driver, at risk for engine failure while driving it. The engine light and knocking sound happened with no warning. Yes, the problem was confirmed by the Reed Hyundai of Kansas City. They told us that the car needs a new engine and that they bear no responsibility for the malfunction. The engine lights and sounds happened simultaneously. The vehicle was immediately stopped and towed to the dealership. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The engineer lost all oil and immediately started making a knocking noise.
Automobile is consuming a huge amount of oil. The vehicle does not have an oil leak.
