NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2013 Hyundai Veloster. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and was unable to exceed 40 MPH. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related it to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 126,000.
The steering coupler for the MDPS (Motor Driven Power Steering) was disentegrated mostly. There are 8 cutouts on the coupler. 4 catch the motor and 4 catch the steering box. Its original and made of soft rubber. The steering always seemed vague for a sports car. The new coupler Dorman 926-990 looks like a urethane, some type of firmer material. The car steers perfectly now. The danger is from the chance that the coupler wouldn't catch when turning the steering wheel which supplies input to the MPDS and the steering wheel would turn and the front wheels wouldn't or maybe only sort of follow the intended direction.
On 8/2123 my son had left school, once on the major road his car would not accelerate. As he was turning, at a light, to get off the major road his car went limp and could barely move. An on coming car just missed him. I opened a claim with hyundai because they have a open case with their engines. They verified that the car is on the list for the extended warranty of the engine. Towed the car to a dealership and based off their diagnostic they say it's not the rod bearings it could be the camshaft or crankshaft and therefore the car is not qualified for the extended warranty. It is clear that they are covering themselves to not replace my engine. My son almost got into a major accident due to their faulty engine.
A wire from the ac fan controller gets extremely hot and the fan controller melts. Could possibly be a fire hazard under the right circumstances.
Purchased car from Premier Auto in Kansas City, KS in January of 2023. The car had 70,000 miles on it. In July of 2023 I was driving on a 4 lane HWY with a speedlimit of 65. The car suddenly jerked to and slowed to 35 MPH. The car behind me nearly hit me. I had it towed to Midas to have it checked out. They informed me the engine had failed and it was because of a manufacturer recall. I then had it towed to a Hyundai dealership in October 2023. They stated to me that it was engine failure due to a recall but they would not fix it. They stated not under recall. The dealership then sent me a notice saying that I owed them 150 dollars and they would keep the car. I filed a claim with Hyundai corporate and they denied repairs stating not under warranty. I appealed that which was a denied response with the reason as not under warranty. I then filed a claim with BBB warranty department and their response was "we only assist with new car warranty issues. I then filed another claim with Hyundai corporate and the dealership and both denied it because of the warrant expiration. While that was happening I lost my spouse of 23 years. The car has been at the dealership for 2.5 years now and I continue to submit requests that are continuously denied.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle and shifting into reverse (R), the vehicle failed to respond. The contact then shifted into drive (D), but the vehicle failed to respond. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that he shifted into park (P), turned off, and restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle responded as needed. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic several times, but the failure could not be duplicated. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V132000 (Electrical System); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to schedule an appointment for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The manufacturer then referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
Steering wheel is clicking with the slightest movement. After diagnostic at Hyundai they stated its a known issue , yet no recall for this model has been put out yet. Only on other Hyundai's. The diagnostic result given was the coupling was going bad. If this effects your ability to steer your vehicle I feel like this should be a safety recall. I have located several complaints about this same issue. On the veloster forum there are multiple people experiencing this same issue.
Climate control switch melted and caused a small fire. I had to pull my dash apart very quicky to put it out. The Hyundai dealership would not help me even though a 2014 Elantra and Veloster has had technical service bulletins regarding this issue. They charged me 200$ dollars to tell me the switch melted even though I had already pulled it apart and showed them the issue. I spoke to Hyundai USA about it and they did not help me either. I bought the part and replaced it myself after the dealer tried to tell me it was almost 700$ for the repair. My son was in a panic because the cab of the car was filling with smoke as we were driving. No warnings or anything.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while diving 40 MPH, the front driver’s side sun visor exploded. The contact stated that the air bags warning light illuminated. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 55,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while operating the vehicle, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the camshaft and timing belt was faulty. The vehicle was not yet repaired. Additionally, the contact stated the front passenger’s side wheel was shaking and vibrating abnormally while driving, the hood release latch was unsecure, and the passenger’s side door handle had detached. The contact stated that the windows would randomly roll up and down without input from the driver. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 127,000. The VIN was not available.
I have had the ABS checked by Hyundai dealership per recall and they told me there was no issues, but I’m having a lot of problems with accelerating, and it shifting gears, I don’t think the system is really diagnosing, whenever I turn my car on sometimes it will do a diagnostic read, but it can’t send data, and it will take a while for the system to reset itself. It does smell like my car is smoking and I will have to physically roll my window down and/or poke my head out the window to make sure it’s not smoking. I’m checking my temperature gauge in my car to make sure it id within normal range. And when the check engine light comes on, sometimes it will come up and will blink for a few seconds and then disappear. Then I will go to O’Reilly’s or Advanced Auto Zone to get a reading the common codes that have come up were P0401, P0442,
I am concerned with the notice of a recall which I received June 2023 concerning a possible electrical fault in the ABS module which could cause a fire in the engine compartment. There is NO fix available . I called my local Hyundai garage and the Hyundai corp office and they both told me the same thing and that is they do not have a fix and do not know when one will be available' I find this unacceptable and stalling by the Hyundai Company I am told that I should park the car away from the house as it might catch fire wether the car is running or not. After 8 months i can only suppose the Hyundai Company is ignoring the problem because it will cost them money I would be most grateful if you could light a fire under Hyundai, so to speak, so that they will solve this problem [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Unknown. Yesterday May, 19th we were driving when the check engine light started flashing, the car started runing rough, misfiring, and there was a burning smell. On top of that our car has been burning too much oil and gass. As of right now we have an appt to have it towed to, and have it serviced at our local Hyundai dealership in Racine, Wi for our 2013 Veloster turbo. Our issue is that there is a recall on later models for engine failures, for the very same symptoms, but not ours for some reason.
On 9/27/2022, I wrote a letter to the NHTSA (which was published in a PDF) outlining the reasons why all Veloster's (2011-2014) equipped with 1.6 L GDI engines are having Detonation And Catastrophic Failures. To sum it up, the real reason is the compression ratio is "much higher" than recommended for use with Regular 87 Octane Fuel. The compression ratio in the Base Model is: 11:1 and the Turbo Equipped Model is: 10:1. A compression ratio of 11:1 is "boarder line" for 105 Octane Race Fuel. The 11:1 compression ratio creates a Higher Combustion Chamber Temperature, which ignites the fuel air mixture before the Piston Reaches TDC. This causes excessive pressure on the Pistons and Rods, because the cylinder is firing while the Piston Is In It's Upward Travel. While even though the compression ratio is lower for the Turbo Model, the Turbo Boost creates a higher cylinder pressure. That higher cylinder pressure combined with the detonation issues caused by the Low Octane Fuel, creates excessive pressure on the Pistons And Connecting Rods. This is what is causing these engines to fail! Hyundai has since installed a Dual CVVT Phase Regulator which lowers the Compression (by bleeding off Cylinder pressure) when the Knock Sensor detects Detonation. This is on all replacement GDI Engines. Many of the Hyundai And Kia Models use these same engines. Many of those models have already been recalled, but due to "Under Performing Sales" ours have not. The Veloster did not really "take off" until 2015. That's why the 2015-2016 Models (with the same engine) have Engine Recalls. If you have heard a Continuous Engine Knock your Engine already has Internal Engine Damage, but everyone who owns one of these Veloster's (that is still in running condition) should Immediately switch to Premium Fuel. Premium Fuel will help Prevent Detonation, And Temporarily Prevent Engine Failure. All of these Engines need to be Immediately Recalled, to provide for The Safety Of Our Family And Ourselves!
Car will stop driving in the middle of the highway and it won't shift gears. my car is 2013 Veloster with only 60000 miles
When I took my car to the Hyundai dealer for recalls in April 2023 after they completed the service my steering coupler broke and I was told it would cost me 292.00 to repair. I went this morning to get tires at flynn's and they gave me a technical service bulletin 14-st-002-1 re: the steering coupler and told me to call Hyundai because it should be replaced for free. I phoned Hyundai dealer and they stated this does not apply to my particular vin #. It is definitely broken and should be applied to this vehicle.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving into a parking lot, a small rock fell on the panoramic sunroof and the sunroof shattered. The contact stated that the shade guard was closed at the time of the failure. There was no injury sustained. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that their location did not perform sunroof glass replacement. The dealer referred the contact to an auto glass repair shop, where the shattered glass was removed. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where pictures of the failure were taken and sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer informed the dealer that they could not cover the sunroof glass replacement because the moving part of the sunroof glass was not shattered. The contact followed up with the warranty department and was informed that the dealer had denied repairing the vehicle under the warranty because the failure was caused by a rock. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 53,000.
The engine is burning oil after couple days of change engine oil. The oil engine light will flash after a week or two after changing the oil. Thank you
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V132000 (Electrical System) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated while parking on a city street at approximately 3 MPH, the contact engaged the Reverse Park Aid Sensor (RPAS). The contact had to activate the "shift lock release" in order to park the vehicle. The contact stated that the turn signals were inoperable, the headlamps were not functioning normally, and the proximity rear sensor alarm had stopped functioning. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 149,000. VIN showed no open recall.

UNKNOWN I'm not sure, I'm only scared what happens if this recalls isn't fixed sooner than expected so I can avoid unexpected issues or expensive repairs...
Seat belt will unclip randomly while driving.
I was on the freeway and the car stalled almost causing a major accident took the shop they said I need to replace engine coils and spark plug’s replaced and in a few weeks on the freeway on the way to work it stalled again took back to the shop they checked my spark plugs and engine coils they were burnt and black they said engine failure cylinder 2 it’s been in shop 6 times now they say I need a engine
Engine consumes a quart of oil every 1-2 weeks. Burning through oil like crazy in-between oil changes, feels sluggish on low gears, stalls, rattling noise. Mass oil consumption damages rods causing other engine issues such as punctures in n engine block.
I own a 2013 Hyundai Veloster in 2019 a recall was issued for engine management component recall number 182. In 2018 my engine was blown because of the engine management component how could I know this if the recall was an issue till 2019 the next year I took the car to Hyundai they said they're not responsible for the blown engine this car has 50,000 miles on it Hyundai is supposed to repair any car up to $100,000 me in 10 year warranty they refused to fix it engine gets hot heats up I'm scared of a fire Hyundai does not want to be responsible for this car what do I do to fix this problem it's not safe to be on the road but I need to drive my car please help me this is not the first time I contact nhtsa
My engine recently started making knocking noise from the bottom of the block, very indicative of rod bearing knock. This is extremely common with my model year and Hyundai covers this issue with other vehicles my model year. When I contacted both Hyundai and the dealer they told me my vin did not have the coverage of an engine replacement. My car has the same engine as all the others that have this issue and I have seen others get their engine replaced. The dealer told me an engine replacement would cost me 3x the price of the car.
Steering coupler went out at 23,000 miles. Not covered under warranty according to Hyundai leading to repairs in excess of $500. Many Hyundai’s have this problem and if it goes out completely the vehicle no longer has electric steering assist, the steering wheel makes a clunking sound, and the car drifts all over the road.
There is an open recall for my 2013 Veloster turbo 1.6 turbo engine code 182 from Hyundai. But it’s not showing under my VIN. My car have exact problems that is described in the recall. “ Engine damage can increase the risk of a fire or cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.” so I went to the dealership but they said they won’t help me with the recall and they can fix my car but they are going to charge me.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while attempting to make a left or right turn, he felt a clicking sensation in the steering wheel. No warning light was illuminated. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the steering coupling needed to be replaced. The contact stated that an appointment was scheduled for the following month. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 53,000.
The climate control knob does not function properly on my car. I removed the climate control panel from my car and found metal parts of the knob to be black and burnt and plastic parts to be melted and disformed causing the part to malfunction. All that’s needs to be replaced to fix the problem is the knob itself on the climate control panel. However, the knob is not sold individually and you must buy the whole climate control panel which costs over $200. It also seems to pose a potential fire risk if it heats up to the point that parts are melting/burning
No lamp messages, however the front and rear windshield wipers will not stop when put in the off position. Windshield sprayers will not activate. I've had to pull the fuses to the wipers, though now the wipers work when turned on, but will not seat themselves nor does the sprayer mechanism work still. In neither situation of fuses in or not, I have no intermittent on options for either front or back windshield wipers. When driving, if I get spashed with snow/slush, I lose all visibility; and can only blindly pull over use a spray bottle and hand towel to clean my windows. I have been finding that this is a problem with not just my vehicle, but that it is a repeat problem for multiple people with the same car make and model. I hope nobody is ran over because a driver can't see due to faulty windshield wiper controls.
The blower for the AC and heater stopped working. It evidently caught fire because there is a burnt smell. When I searched the problem, I noticed that you already did a recall for this but left out the 2013 models. This is extremely dangerous as it could catch fire while driving. Please add the 2013s to the recall.
I was driving back home from work. When I began to notice a knocking sound coming from my engine. The car suddenly began to shake and stall, not allowing me to accelerate properly. Right after that the car completely shut off and I had to push it to the side of the road. About a month later I received a notice from Hyundai in which they stated the vehicle had a recall due to failing connecting rod bearing. I contacted my mechanic on what this may caused, and without me going into full detail about my incident he mentioned everything that I went through. I then schedule an appointment at my local Hyundai delearship for the KSDS install, and hoping for a fix under the warranty guidelines given in the notice. Today I received a message notifying me that they would not be fixing the car under the recall notice.
2013 Hyundai Veloster 2013 turbo had 69000 miles when the engine stalled on the highway and promptly slowed to 40 mph. Midas stated engine blew due to a recall so I had it towed to the closest dealership in Oct 2022. They denied the repair and sent it to corporate for authorization and it was denied. Dealership attempted to charge 150 for checking the recall. They then told me to talk to Corporate hyundai. I have went back and forth with them trying to get an explanation for the denial to fix the recall. They wouldn't send the explanation. I refiled the claim again sending them recall laws as well. Recently I received a call from the dealership stating they had the car towed and destroyed. Help
Engine stall due to the recall
2013 HYUNDAI VELOSTER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO ENGINE TROUBLE.
The manual heater control unit, theinternal switch for the blower (fan) speed control become inoperative- the wire gets too hot and burns which makes this not work and could catch fire.
I was driving and the blower control switch stopped working and I had smoke coming out of my dash. Later my husband took it apart and the back of the switch and the part that plugged into the switch was burned. Without a blower, I don't have any defrost, fan, or ac option which could be dangerous in the winter if things ice over. We called Hyundai and they are very well aware of this issue and they said that we could replace it and the same thing could happen in 2 months and they aren't doing anything about it. This part was replaced once by the dealer while my car was under warranty. The only indication that there was a problem is when it stopped working along with the smoke issue.
Engine failed driving down the highway, rod broke witch put a large hole in the engine.
The trunk latch is defective; the trunk flies open when you hit a bump. There are a lot of cars with the same problem.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving approximately at 65 MPH, the steering wheel was loose, and she was unable to have control of the steering. The vehicle was to a local independent mechanic. There was a steering wheel failure diagnosis. The mechanic stated there was a recall with a different model. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number 16V190000 (Steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact works as a certified mechanic. The contact stated that upon servicing the vehicle, he noticed that the heater control wiring harness was extremely hot. The contact cleaned the wiring harness with on contact cleaner; however, the contact stated that the vehicle began to overheat while idling. The contact diagnosed that the heater control wiring harness connector had melted. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
Due to Recall 182. I was driving and without warning my car slowed down to 40 mph from 70 mph and thecheck engine came on. I had the car towed to Midas who informed me of a recall that had caused a pressure build up in the piston which caused the engine to fail. The rate at which the car slowed was unbelievable and almost caused the car behind me to rear-end my car. The dealership refuses to fix the car stating that it is not under warranty. The engine failure happened at 86,000 miles. I got to drive this car for all of 3 months and it has been at the dealership for 5 months.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact pulled over to stop the vehicle and heard a loud banging sound and then a popping sound coming from the engine. The contact stated that smoke was coming from underneath the vehicle along with a mix of fluid pooling under the vehicle. The contact stated that pieces of metal were on the roadway. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer who diagnosed that the engine was blown and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 188,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with faulty cylinders. The dealer informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V204000 (Electrical System, Engine) however, the failure was not related to the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
My engine burns oil. There is no leakage on the ground. I check the oil once a week and have to add 2 1/2 quarts of oil or more every time i check it. My safety is at risk because if I miss one week of checking the oil level and forget to add oil, my engine is going to seize while driving and possible kill me or other drivers. Oil lamp has been on and i've been refilling the oil weekly for approximately one month. Tire company -Midas tires- changed my tires but did not perform an inspection. They informed me of a government recall for a dangerous engine issue that Hyundai will not acknowledge nor fix.
A LOT OF LOOSE MOTION AND CLICKING IN STERRING WHEEL MECHANIC SAID SAFETY HAZARD NEEDS FIXING I NOTICED A LOT OF COMPLAINTS FOR THIS INCIDENT BUT NOTHING DONE ABOUT IT PLEASE HELP NOW
UNKNOWN: 1) was parked and car took longer than normal to start. 2) after starting and shifting gears, car would not move forward or backwards. 3) towed to mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. NOTE: all gauges were on and was able to shift as normal.
A few months ago, my ABS and Traction Control lights began to come on and off randomly. Then, new lights would pop up, such as Check Engine and the Brake light. These lights would come on, and then go off very sporadically. In the last week, it had gotten much worse. My tire pressure light and EPS light had came on as well, totaling about 6 or 7 lights that are on and won't go off. Then, my steering wheel became increasingly hard to turn, I' m guessing because the EPS was off. Then, my speedometer completely stopped working, and my gas gauge was jumping up and down after I had filled it to a full tank. I pulled the code, and got code for a wheel speed sensor. I replaced the wheel speed sensor, and no lights went off. I then inspected the fuses, noticed that the ABS fuse was blown, and decided to replace it. I replaced it, and the ABS module (or pump) started to smoke badly. The car had a heavy electrical smoke smell and I didn't think it was safe to drive for a while. Hyundais have had recalls for ABS modules smoking before, but never for a 2013 Hyundai Veloster, and I believe that is something that should be investigated because I believe I could have been injured.
