NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Hyundai Veloster. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Engine failure outside of normal warranty period. However oil consumption is the cause. Hyundai allows for 1quart of oil loss every 1000 miles. There should be no oil loss. Before I could get an oil consumption test my motor started knocking. The dealership was supposed ask for goodwill assistance but never did. They found no compression in cylinder 4 and stated since it wasn’t a rod bearing failure they would not cover it. Also they are using third party BBB to turn down complaints which should be a violation of the consumers rights. They are paid by Hyundai to reject claims.
I brought in my car to the Irvine Tuttle-Click Hyundai Service location because the recall said my car had a possibility of engine fires, and my car has been with this service location for more than four months because the employees at this location inspected my car and confirmed that it needed to be replaced. There were no issues with my car prior to bringing it to this location and no warning lights were appearing on my dash to alert me of any problems. Now that they claim that they have completed replacing my engine, they are claiming that the alternator on my car is now damaged and needs to be replaced for $535.15, and if I do not replace it my car will not start without a jump start. Before bringing my car into this location there was no problems getting my car to start. The representative I spoke to claimed the part no longer works because the engine is new and the preexisting parts are old so they will most likely be damaged now because they are unable to work with the new engine. Again there were no issues with my car outside of the recall. It was running perfectly with no issues before I brought it to this service center and the only reason I brought it in was because I got the recall notice in the mail. Along with this issue they have had my car for since May 20th and it is now October 1st, because of this new issue they still have my car even though they claim to have completed the recall service. Also throughout the entire four months of my car being at their location they were not communicating with me at all regarding any of the progress with my car. Any communication was from me calling for updates on the services which were met with incomplete answers. Now that they are attempting to charge me for the part that they claim is damaged, the representative I have been working with and the front desk have not been picking up my calls.
Hi its burning oil and oil consumption and i send it to the dealer and they confirm and agree that its manufacturer issue and part of recall engine , but they declined to follow the process of oil consumption and engine recall without accepting reason and my car milage 102412 .
The safety recall on my vehicle has been open for nearly 7 months with a risk of fire. There is still no status as to when my vehicle can be serviced to prevent this risk of fire. I find this lack of urgency completely unacceptable considering the risk.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving 65MPH, the engine started knocking and shaking then stalled. The check engine warning light was intermittently illuminated. The contact then stated that she was able to coast the vehicle off the road. Upon checking under the hood of the vehicle, she noticed that oil had spilled throughout the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Unknown me and my kids got on the highway to go to the mall and it did just fine on the way there but on the way back it lost acceleration my engine light started to blink off and on and then we started to hear a knocking noise when I stopped I cut it off and then restarted it and the knocking got loud apond starting it and then when I push on the gas it knocked hard seems like
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated after purchasing the vehicle online, he noticed the vehicle was making an abnormal noise. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine temperature increased, and the check engine warning light illuminated before the engine failed and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was later driven to the local dealer who diagnosed that the head gasket was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed and determined that the catalytic converter was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact stated that the engine was previously replaced under a Manufacturer Service Campaign. The failure mileage was 129,000.
I have a Hyundai Veloster 2015 base (dual-clutch transmission) that has 152,000 miles. I’ve regularly kept up with maintenance. Fully synthetic oil changed every ~5k miles. About a month ago it got a brand new battery and a new alternator. I have some issues related to the transmission. My owners manual regarding transmission fluid says: TRANSMISSION FLUID: -Checking 6-speed automatic transmission fluid: The automatic transmission does not have a transmission fluid dipstick. Refer to your scheduled maintenance information for scheduled intervals for fluid checks and changes. Your transmission does not consume fluid. I’ve recently experienced intermittent issues with the transmission failing to engage 1st gear from a stop. I have a code P073F as well as P0420 that’s been intermittent for months. (I know that’s the cat converter) The engine revs but does not accelerate at all from a stop on occasion. It happened three times in the week. Also have issues with clutch (DCT) overheating. When this occurs, I will see the current gear that I am in (usually D but it has occurred in all others except P, N, and R) begins to flash (usually three times) with a chime warning noise. Restarting the vehicle resolves the issue occasionally. Then, a few days ago, after coming off of the highway I was no longer to get the car to go faster than around 20 to 30 mph and began to hear a loud clanking/metallic sound seemingly from the engine. The gear indicator began blinking rapidly and continued to blink in every gear in D as well as S and even when I put the vehicle in park. After turning it off and waiting about 10 mins I turned it on and the “P” was no longer blinking. Decided to test driving it through the parking lot and began blinking again pretty much as soon as it shifted gears and began to hear a metallic noise again. I suppose that I assumed it being a closed-circuit or “sealed” transmission meant there wasn’t maintenance to be done on it.
After driving my 2015 Veloster (Auto DCT) for 15-20 mins, I will come to a stop sign/stop light and the car will stall. I will try and restart my car several times (4-5) before it actually starts. When it does, my gauge cluster will not register RPM's. After several more restarts (usually 6), the RPM's will finally register but my car will not go into Drive or Reverse. Several more restarts and my car will finally go into gear. This usually occurs over a 20 minute period.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the vehicle started to stall. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to return to the parking spot. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,780.
ENGINE LOCKED AND STARTER WAS FIRE BURNING WITH NO PREVIOUS ISSUES
I turned my car on after work and saw my check engine light turn on I went to autozone to have it checked and they gave me a paper stating it was P0441 engine code. Which has something to do with an incorrect purge flow and is harmful to you and eats away at your gas mileage. Don’t know if this is a safety issue.
Vehicle consuming oil... been to dealership several times for this issue... oil consumption test performed confirming usage of oil. latest measurment on oil consumption was 1.8 quarts in 1000 miles. Vehicle blowing blue smoke, back of vehicle covered in oil. Vehicle lost power/accleration on highway causing large saftey issue. PA# from hyundai is 100577. Received updated warranty extension from hyundai up to 150,000. Car is exhibiting multiple signs of recall involving connecting rods. Have spoken with hyundai corporate, am now on my third case number with them.. case 19177351
The contact called on behalf of his girlfriend who owns a 2015 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while his girlfriend was driving approximately 60 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle decelerated independently, and the driver pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted and driven to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to an unknown NHTSA Campaign Number related to the engine. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the unknown recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
My 2015 Hyundai Veloster Turbo had no open recalls. On 12/26/21, while stopped at a light, the car stalled, then started smoking, and caught fire almost instantly. There are known fire issues for similar models for which there are open recalls, but my car was not a part of these recalls.
Since purchasing my car in 2015, I've had to have the A/C knob replaced 3 times for it melting on the inside and disconnecting, being unable to control the fan. That seems extremely hazardous and ridiculous that nothing has been said about it before. I've searched many forums and it has been a common from problem for many people with this same car. Just so happened that someone who mentioned theirs was smoking inside of the car suggested we can actually report the issue, so I am submitting mine in hopes it's be noticed.
MY CAR IS CHANGING GEARS WHILE IM DRIVING- I WILL APPEAR TO LOSE IMMEDIATE POWER TO THE VEHICLE ONLY TO SEE THAT THE CAR THAT WAS IN DRIVE, GOING 65 MILES PER HOUR, DROPS DOWN TO 20 IN SECONDS AND IS NOW IN 2ND GEAR OR NEUTRAL ! OTHER ISSUES- PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE FROM PARK AND IT JUMPS TO NEUTRAL- PUT CAR IN DRIVE- STAYS IN DRIVE POSITION BUT SATYS IN NEUTRAL - PUT THE CAR IN PARK BUT CAR THINKS ITS IN REVERSE - BLEW A PISTON AT 65000 MILES - HYUNDAI REFUSED TO HELP ME FOR 5 MONTHS - TRIED TO SELL ME A NEW ENGINE -- THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENNG FOR 2 YEARS - I WILL LIST THE LATEST EVENT BELOW
The engine in my 15 Veloster is going out at only 140,00 miles despite tedious care and up keep. I've had a issue of rough idling, loss of power to the engine including a back fire. The engine makes a distinct ticking noise when the accelerator is pushed down. I have paperwork from a mechanic that reports these problems and them looking at it. They told me to take it to the dealership. I took it to a Bachman Hyundai and they said it definitely had connecting rod bearings issues. They were surprised it wasn't under recall. As was I when I saw online from multiple sources, that "2015-2016 Veloster, 2012 Santa Fe, 2011-2013 Sonata Hybrid, and 2016 Sonata Hybrid vehicle" had this recall. My VIN is not applied to this recall however. I have contacted Hyundai Customer care and they refuse to give me a explanation of this reasoning. I asked if they were made in different plants. He gave me no straight forward response, and declined my request to speak with a supervisor with more information. The dealership will not replace the engine, and I will not pay over 6,000 to replace a engine that "can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash." The car began stalling while driving. Took to the Hyundai Dealer in Idaho Falls, ID and they changed spark plugs, did not repair the car, the coils, did not repair the car. Next, the car began vibrating and underpowered with the check engine light flashing. Made it to the dealership only to find out the motor suffered internal failure and is irreparable. This fits the exact description of the engine recalls that have impacted the other Veloster models. My car has been serviced regularly, with records of oil changes, tire rotations, and is currently in immaculate condition. The dealership has indicated that it will cost $8,000 to put in an engine from the salvage yard. I am certain that I am victim to the faulty engine.
My 2015 Veloster Reflex has been at Alan Jackson, Jackson TN. for 45 days. The vehicle was serviced there for campaigns/recalls. The primary complaint, engine failure while I was driving down Highway 70, the engine completely shut off, a defective engine, a product which Hyundai is at fault. The defective engine is consuming 1 quart of oil per 80 miles. I asked the service department to start the oil consumption test, Brian the lead technician, responded "You need a new engine." This safety hazard and economic burden has yet to be resolved. The Veloster is kept and maintained in immaculate condition. While the vehicle is only garage kept, it is now in the elements without protection, remaining on the lot of the service department for over 45 days, which is not in good faith a suitable resolution period. I commute 100 miles round trip for my profession as a University Professor in Microbiology for the University of Tennessee. My 2015 Veloster Reflex is my primary mode of transportation to various satellite and main campus obligatory profession duties. I am without transportation due to Hyundai's negalence in properly addressing these chief safety hazardous engine failures/massive oil (synthetic) consumption which is now blowing through my catalytic converter, exiting through my exhaust tips, turning them black and splattering oil along my rear bumper. The original case manager, Jose, failed to respond to this safety hazard in the 10 business days which Hyundai has set forth, as well as, when Jose would tried to be reached on my behalf, Jose was never available, in addition too, his voicemail was always full, which meant I could not leave a message. Again, is this how Hyundai's customer care is really showing through their actions that they do care?
Hyundai has not completed a recall (20V746000) for my 2015 Veloster. I first contacted a local Hyundai dealership (Torpedo Gruppe) in Germany on 11 Aug 2021. After they told me they don't know anything about the recall, I contacted Hyundai America on 20 August. After working with a Case Manager (case #[XXX]) they put me in touch with a manager at Torpedo Gruppe on 18 Sep. I talked with the manager ([XXX]) the next day and dropped my vehicle off on 8 Oct, earliest appointment. After three weeks on 29 Oct I was informed that they would not be able to complete the recall for me. I called Hyundai America back up and had to open a new case (case #[XXX]). I am in the military stationed overseas in Germany at Ramstein Air Base. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Bearing broke which lead to engine failure. I will have to be buying a new engine and turbo. Car stalled in the middle of a busy road. There were no prior indicators of a problem. All maintenance was up to date as well.
My car caught on fire and burn up I was almost killed
I was driving on the highway and my car started stalling causing me to pull over and hasn't started since.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH, the check engine light was illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The interior cabin of the vehicle was vibrating when the contact pulled over. Knocking sounds were heard then the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle would not exceed 10 - 15 MPH. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the connecting rod bearings inside the engine were worn prematurely, resulting in engine damage. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and was taken to an independent mechanic where it remained. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine). The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.
While washing my 2015 Veloster, the shark fin anntena just broke off, I see this has happened with hundreds of Hyundai Vehicles yet they have not done anything about it. The Dealer wants an outrageous $500 to $600 , I got crazy glue and carefully glued it back on. its solid as a rock now and only cost me $6.99 for the glue.
So my Manual Heater knob randomly stopped working as I was driving on 6/4/21 around 11 am as I was about to do an errand run for my family. I was told from a friend that there was a TSB issued on it and looked it up. I went to my local dealership Island Hyundai Staten island explained what was going on and they told me because it is a TSB and not a recall you will be responsible for the cost of repair. I told them why should I when this is a defective situation out of my hands I shouldn't have too.
The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while her son was driving 10 mph, the vehicle lost motive power with several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed, diagnosed, and repaired but continued to experience a failure. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V746000 (Engine). The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 53,000.

CAR TURNED COMPLETELY OFF AND STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. THE ENGINE IS BAD ON THE CAR. I SENT IT TO HYUNDAI WHERE THEY TRIED TO GET ME TO PAY 6000 FOR A ENGINE, EVEN THOUGH A RECALL IS ON THE CAR
Power loss engine stalling flashing check engine light won’t accelerate

DRIVING ON MAJOR HIGHWAY, CAR LOST POWER. STEPPING ON THE GAS WOULD NOT ALLOW THE CAR TO MOVE. CAR IS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE DRIVEN AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. WE ARE BEING TOLD THE ENGINE IS BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE ONLY DETAIL IS THERE IS A NOISE. THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE EARLIER YEAR VEHICLES. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AND LUCKILY NOBODY WAS INJURED AND THERE WAS NO CRASH OR FIRE. IT HAS TAKEN 4 DAYS TO GET A DIAGNOSTIC FROM HYUNDAI. THEY WILL NOT AUTHORIZE A RENTAL UNTIL WARRANTY WORK IS AUTHORIZED BY HYUNDAI, WHICH COULD TAKE ANOTHER THREE TO FOUR DAYS. CONSIDERING THE SERVICE DEPT IS TRYING TO GO THROUGH HYUNDAI FOR WARRANTY INSTEAD OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THERE IS SOMETHING BIGGER THAT THEY ARE NOT BEING TRANSPARENT ABOUT. I REGRET BUYING THIS CAR.
THE A/C KNOB, WHEN AIR CONDITIONING IS TURNED ON, LIGHTS UP. THIS LIGHT BURNS UP THE INSIDE OF THE KNOB AND CAUSES THE CONNECTIONS TO BURN OUT WHICH MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE THE AIR SPEED SETTINGS. CURRENTLY MINE MUST SIT AT 3 OR IT DOESNT WORK AT ALL. I ALSO HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE HEAD UNIT WHICH BLACKED OUT AND STOPPED WORKING OUT OF NOWHERE.
OVER THE PAST 2 MONTHS SQUEALING NOISES HAVE BECOME VER NOTICEABLE ON THE BRAKES. SUPPOSEDLY IT IS MOISTURE, BUT IT SHOULD NOT HAPPENED WHEN IT IS 98 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. I WENT TO A LOCAL WELL KNOWN MECHANIC SHOP AND REPLACED THE BRAKES THINKING IT WAS THE BRAKE PADS BUT IT WASN'T. THE NOISE ONCE AGAIN SHOWED UP. ANOTHER ISSUE, THE AC GOES ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY WHILE ON THE ROAD.
THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AT ABOUT 20 MILES AN HOUR ON A WELL MAINTAINED CITY STREET AND THE REAR HATCHBACK GLASS SHATTERED COMPLETELY.
THE TRUCK LATCH BROKE AT 30,000 MILES ON MY 2015.
MULTIPLE TIMES AFTER SLOWING DOWN ON THE HWY, I GO TO STEP ON THE GAS AND THE ENGINE HAS NO POWER. I HAVE TO QUICKLY PUT IT IN PARK AND THEN PUT IT DRIVE AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED ONLY ON THE FREEWAY. NOT AT A FULL STOP. 5 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR.
AFTER SHOPPING FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES, I WAS IN MY PARKED VEHICLE WITH MY SIBLING IN THE TARGET PARKING LOT WHERE THE CAR WAS ON BUT NOT RUNNING . I OPENED THE AUTOMATIC FELT COVER TO WHERE THE SUNROOF DOES NOT OPEN AS WELL ONLY THE FELT COVER WILL OPEN. I COMPLETELY STARTED MY CAR SO THAT IT'S NOW RUNNING AND THIS IS WHEN MY SUNROOF MADE A LOUD POPPING SOUND ALMOST LIKE A GUNSHOT AND STARTED OPENING UNPROVOKED THEN COMPLETELY SHATTERED OVER BOTH OF OUR HEADS. *TR
