NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Jeep Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Headlights cut out when it says low beam out and both headlights are new and work fine until it decides it doesn’t. Transmission is faulty in these cars.
Power Transfer Unit stopped working. Brakes locked up and car would not move. Is not drive-able at this time. Currently at a dealership awaiting part, of which there is NO ETA on. I was just entering a roundabout when the part failed, and I could have been hit as the vehicle fully stopped and could not be moved. There was a grinding noise and no warning prior of this part failing. The problem was confirmed by a local mechanic who recommended a Jeep Dealership to take care of the issue as the part may be under warranty. I am unsure of who inspected the part currently. This is my primary vehicle and the dealership will not "cover" a loaner car so I am stuck.
For several months I've received "Service 4WD" notifications in my car and I have noticed it has difficult getting up hills specifically if there is any snow/even rain. I brought it in for repair and was told it was the Transfer Case Assembly (PTU) which is a very common issue they've seen with these Jeeps. I told them to go ahead and order the part to fix it. About a week later the service person was told that Chrysler corporate would not release the part because it was or would soon be a recall and they will only release it to the dealers to handle the recall (I understand there are only about 100 of the part available at this moment). I called 2 dealers and it is not appearing as a recall (yet) for my Jeep so they said they could not do anything and gave me the corporate number. Corporate said to reach out here or talk to the dealership again. It is clear that this is an issue for many and should be a recall. At this point, I am just trying to get my car fixed and I can't even get the part because it is in this "almost" recall stage.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while attempting to open the liftgate, the liftgate failed to open. The contact stated that during inclement weather, water was entering the cabin of the vehicle, causing mold to develop inside the vehicle. Neither an independent mechanic nor a dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, STRUCTURE); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
My daughter was driving her car in the middle of a busy intersection when the parking brake locked up causing her to come to an abrupt stop and almost cause an accident. A quick google search appears to indicate that this issue has already been under investigation by NHTSA for a period of time.
Check engine light on and coastal transmission in Toms River New Jersey inspected car and said transmission is not working properly and could cause a sudden stop. Cost would be $4,000 to rebuild it. The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while in a drive-thru line, the front driver's side window started smoking. The contact disconnected the wiring to the door. The vehicle was taken to O'Reilly, where it was diagnosed with an internal door electrical failure. The contact personally replaced the power window motor. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing hard shifts while driving. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was previously taken to O'Reilly’s, where it was diagnosed that the failure was related to the alternator and low battery voltage. The alternator was taken to two technicians for testing, and the contact was informed that the alternator was in good condition. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the ABS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was recently taken to O'Reilly’s and AutoZone for diagnostic testing and the contact was provided fault codes for EVAP system leak detected, 1,2,3 Active Grille Shutter (AGS), throttle pedal position sensor switch A circuit high, System Voltage below and above Threshold, denied torque request signal, ECU configuration mismatch, ECU vehicle option mismatch, output speed sensor, input speed sensor/Correlation, fan 1 control circuit, throttle pedal position sensor switches D and B circuit low, and DTC U0402-00 for TCM immediate repair. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
The car has been suddenly lurching backward and forward in traffic/ while driving, moving forward and backwards unexpectantly and not accelerating at an expected rate, causing other vehicles almost to hit me about 4 times within 1 week starting last week around 12/8/25, because my vehicle is not moving at the expected rate during yielding, changing lanes, etc. I took it to the shop and reported this issue, and they informed me that this vehicle has serious oil leaks and multiple parts that have failed involving the oil filter housing, engine valve cover, engine intake manifold gasket, etc. I have attached a list of parts that have failed in this vehicle from the repair shop for your records and can make available the parts upon request. My repair shop has told me that they have had to repair MULTIPLE other cars of this make and model for the same reason/ failed parts across multiple years up to until about 2021, but that the company repaired it on more current models, which clearly indicates that this is a KNOWN issue for prior models. This company has an obligation to protect its customers and conduct a full recall on prior models to correct this issue, in order to prevent serious injury or death of the public! I trust you will investigate this matter thoroughly.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The message "4WD Low" was displayed, and there was a grinding sound coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was diagnosed with PTU failure. The contact was informed that the PTU needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Car is in great shape, however, recently the Service AWD has popped up. brought it to the Reedman JEEP Dealership - they say its a bad PTU. Now I see a bunch of people have the bad PTU. Now I have a car in great shape minus the fact I won't be able to sell it or trade it in for full value and it cots thousands to fix.

I’m submitting a complaint regarding a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failure on my Jeep (VIN: [XXX] ), which affects the drivetrain and vehicle propulsion. On 11/26/2025, my vehicle was evaluated by Ourisman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Bowie after dashboard warnings “Service 4WD” and “Service Shifter” appeared. The dealership diagnosed a PTU failure, provided a $3,835 estimate, and stated the required part is on national backorder with no availability date. The dealership also stated that if/when the part does become available, it is limited and can only order one part each month. Due to this failure, the vehicle may lose partial or complete drivetrain power while driving, potentially rendering it inoperable or impairing control, creating a safety risk, especially at highway speeds. Because the replacement part is unavailable with no foreseeable availability date for any customer experiencing this issue, the vehicle cannot be repaired at this time. This leaves me to operate a vehicle with a known drivetrain defect or remove it from service indefinitely, leaving me without transportation. Following my visit, I located a Jeep PTU warranty extension letter covering failures for 8 years/150,000 miles, confirming manufacturer awareness. No safety recall has been issued, as confirmed on [XXX] . The PTU failure was inspected and confirmed by the dealership. The manufacturer has not performed a physical inspection. I contacted Jeep Case Management regarding warranty coverage and next steps; despite providing documentation, Jeep has not offered a repair solution or timeline. I was advised my case could not remain open unless the vehicle was left at the dealership indefinitely, which is not feasible. I'm submitting this complaint so NHTSA is aware of this PTU issue, warranty coverage without available repair parts, and absence of a recall. The vehicle can be inspected by NHTSA upon request. I'm available to provide documentation and can be contacted via email. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
4wd overheating. Owned this Jeep for 8 years and had it in multiple (5x plus) times for service 4wd code. 2 different dealerships cannot fix the issue. Now they are telling me just drive it and not worry about it or trade it in. It smells hot and something burning. I have the life time max care warranty on it. The codes I get are the 4wd is unavailable overheated and service 4wd. They have replaced multiple parts and still not working. I will be just sitting idle and it comes on.
Why does a service shifter notes appear on the dashboard of my 2015 Jeep Cherokee latitude? Thank you
My transmission failed and was not connecting with the driver train any more. The Jeep only has 112k miles on it. This recall mentions the transmission teeth being broken/wore down and creating an issue. NHTSA Campaign #:: 20V343000 I never got anything about this recall. My cost to replace the transmission was $4700.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 61 MPH and accelerating, the vehicle stalled twice. The contact stated that the cabin was filled with smoke. The contact was able to pull over and open the hood and noticed the smoke near the engine. After 4 minutes, the smoke dissipated. The vehicle would be towed later. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 162,000.
My Jeep is disabled due to a drivetrain failure covered under Jeep’s XJ1 Warranty Extension. The required part is on extended backorder (weeks) and Jeep is unable to provide a remedy or transportation while the vehicle is inoperable. This results in a safety hazard and unreasonable delay of repair. Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failure under warranty extension XJ1. Vehicle is disabled and cannot be safely driven. Jeep is unable to provide the part required for repair, resulting in an unreasonable delay of remedy.
Check engine light on 2015 Jeep Cherokee Sport turned on, vehicle "went limp". Pulled over, turned car off, waited, turned car back on. Happened again taking car to dealership. The dealership said "code for trans range sensor p1726. reset trans and test drove. code did not come back". Same thing happened again a week later. Took it to Firestone, code was "TCM P1726-00 Transmission Manage Sensor "C" circuit High. They said it sounded like the Recall Number 16V529000/S55. I took it back to the dealership, they said the recall, despite being for a 2015 Jeep Cherokee didn't apply and noted "Same code P1726 set in TCM. Going to need range sensor and TCM replaced."
My Jeep has been returned to the Dealership I purchased it from now for the 3rd time to have the Rear Differential completely replaced. The first time, because the Rear Differential axle seal was leaking. The 2nd time, the rear differential had another axle seal leak. This is now my 3rd time where I have dropped off my Jeep because of a noise coming out of the Read Differential, and the Dealer states it needs to be replaced, with under 1 year from the previous replacement. My Jeep has been sitting in the Dealership since Oct. 17 and the dealer is saying that Stallantis has over 400 of these rear differentials on back order. On Friday November 14, will be 5 weeks and now I cannot get my Jeep back, because the Dealership is saying the manufacturer has no estimate for when a new Rear Differential will be available. This has been a major defect since I purchased the vehicle as well as other Jeep owners saying the same thing. Now my dealership cannot release my Jeep, due to the mechanical breakdown, and I may never get my Jeep back due to Stallantis not manufacturer the parts fast enough for dealers to make the necessary repairs. I need someone's help!
The vehicle suddenly started showing parking brake, traction, ABS, and check engine lights after being started. Earlier in the day, I had also started the vehicle but cancelled the errands and returned to start it later when the dashboard and warning lights came on. Putting it in reverse, the steering was stiff as if in neutral. Never left the driveway as I wasn't taking a chance in steering or braking. The battery is less than a year old. This is the second time this has happened.
Vehicle was driving and working just as it should, up until two mornings ago, I start the jeep, shifted into gear and it got stuck in neutral. Service parking brake came on, traction control claims to be on even after pushing the button a couple different times to try and disengage it, odometer flashes when car is fully on(not in acc mode), check engine light is on. Battery was recently replaced and is good so it’s not the battery. Jeep still starts, but is still stuck in neutral as of yesterday morning(9-23-2025).
Electric parking brake light keeps coming on also the shifters light comes on a lot as well
Was involved in a frontal collision. Front end was crushed to include the radiator. None of the airbags deployed.
My 2015 Jeep Cherokee Vin [XXX] threw a code on the ptu.I saw that it had a extended warranty on the car. When i took it to the dealer they informed me that car was imported to canda when bought. The car was brought back to United States work was done on the powertrain twice while the car was in Us and extended warranty was then issued for the ptu.The dealer told me the car was pending a recall as of yet the vin was not issued for recall. When i contacted Chrysler they informed that since the car was imported to Canada that warranty was voided. If possible to know if my car is coming up on recall list. Or if i can get further assistance in this issues i never know that a car can get imported to Canada then back to Us would have these issues. I was not informed by the dealer that i bought the auto from that the car was imported from Canada i never know that it would be an issues on this matter I wouldn't have bought the car had i known this issues i would be facing .Any help or guidance in this matter would be appreciated. 2015 Jeep Cherokees is not functioning and I'm getting flashing parking brake light. There is water corrosion, which can cause the brake to activate unexpectedly. I did not have any spills in the cargo area of my vehicle. I believe it is from water coming into the wheel well. I took the car to the dealership and they claimed it would cost me $5000 to replace not only the Parking Brake module, but the whole connection to the body harness. I currently do not have a parking brake. I am aware there is a known Service Report for this issue.
The PTU spline issues already recalled on 2017-2019 year Jeep Cherokee and other Stellantis vehicles, is affecting my 2015 Jeep Cherokee. See NHTSA Campain Numbers 25V011000, 23V302000, 20V343000.
Service shifter warning came on while driving, had to put the vehicle back into automatic mode since manual shifting (paddle shifting) stopped working.
UNKNOWN - The "Service 4WD" and "Service Parking Brake" warning lights are on. My mechanic said that the PTU needs to be replaced and that this is a known issue with this model. It should be a recall item.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the “Service 4WD” warning light was illuminated. In addition, the “Service 4WD” warning light was flashing on and off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with a power transfer unit failure. The contact was informed that the power transfer unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a power transfer unit failure. The contact was informed that because the connection point was worn, the power transfer unit needed to be replaced. The contact referenced an unknown recall which had a similar failure description; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the message "4-WD Service Needed" was displayed. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the PTU was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000.
Transmission issue, vehicle bucks or jolts when accelerating appears there is a recall for this but my VIN shows I am not recalled but other 2015 Jeep Cherokees were affected. How can I get this fixed since it was a recall? Cooling goes in and out. This was a recall and it said it was repaired back in 2015 but since 2015 the year I bought the car, I have experienced cooling issues. I bought my car brand new.
The vehicle is exhibiting all the same mechanical issues as others that have been covered under a recall pertaining to the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). I took it to an authorized dealer and they discovered the input splines on the PTU are worn badly and suggested a PTU replacement as well as a rear axle replacement. They did the software update to reprogram the PTU and that was supposed to correct the issue. I had to pay for the software update, whereas, yet again this update was covered on other Jeep Cherokee's of the same make, model, and year. The dealer is saying that I will have to pay out of pocket for the PTU, and rear axle replacement since my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited does not have the particular recall for its VIN number. This vehicle is a safety risk to drive with these unaddressed issues that others have had addressed previously. I am told by the dealership that the vehicle is not unsafe to drive as is, however, NHTSA previously qualified these vehicles to be unsafe that have these issues pertaining to the recall previously referenced. Since I am told by the dealership that the vehicle is safe to drive as is and furthermore, the vehicle is not covered for a recall repair for the issue I am experiencing, I will continue to drive the vehicle with the safety concern, however, I am not responsible for anything that may result from driving it in the current condition.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact stated that the power liftgate became inoperable when the contact attempted to engage the power liftgate. The contact had to enter the vehicle and manually opened the power liftgate. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the power liftgate module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired, and the dealer confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
My car is hesitant in changing gears. I must put it in drive before it will go in reverse
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the transmission slipped into neutral, and the check engine, ABS, and traction control warning lights illuminated. The message "Service Transmission" and "Service Parking Brake" were displayed, and the vehicle lost automotive power. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed, and the contact was advised that the transmission wiring harness was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 142,000.
Electronic gear shifter light appears on dashboard check gear shifter.
UNKNOWN - The "Service 4WD" and "Service Parking Brake" warning lights are on. The mechanic said that the PTU needs to be replaced and that this is a known issue with this model. That part is on backorder because the issue evidently is very common with this model. It should be a recall item.
The Vehicle suddenly stopped and I was unable to brake or steer the wheel while driving (loss of power/limp mode). I took it to a shop who ran a diagnostic and it came back as DTC code. I now had to tow it out of pocket to the nearest dealership.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power in the middle of the roadway and was unable to restart. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that water had entered the vehicle, resulting in water damages to the RF Radio Hub. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 89,000.
Electrical system/Transmission malfunctioned causing engine to shift into neutral while driving and cause engine to shut down and refuse to start again. The issue seems to only happen whenever the engine is up to temperature and the fan is active. The vehicle has been inspected by a dealership and they said the throttle body was the issue, after replacement the issue still persists. There is no warning lights or symptoms. It will happen either at rest or in motion. I was driving yesterday and it happened after I had completed a lane change and was almost hit by a semi. This is not the first instance of it occurring.
Took vehicle to garage after hearing rattling sound, mechanic said that PTU shaft almost completely came off due to spline wear. He said there should be an active recall specifically for this issue, so referred us to Jeep dealership for repair. The Jeep dealership said that the only active recall is for the powered lift gate module. However, my VIN was not included in the W47 recall (NHTSA 20V-343), even though my vehicle has the same problem. The Jeep dealership wants to replace the entire transmission mount for $516, but the other mechanic states this will likely not fix the problem.
This vehicle is driven by my [XXX] daughter. The service 4x4 light came on . I took it to the dealer and they told me they updated the software. Well not even a week later the 4x4 light was back on and the ABS light. My daughter called me in a panic because the brakes were locking up. She was able to get the truck to the shoulder. I had the vehicle towed to a Jeep Chrysler dealership. I paid over $2500.00 to have vehicle repaired to only have the same 4x4 light on. I took truck back to the dealership to be told that it’s the PTU on the vehicle. Which the service guy Mark said is a common problem with these vehicles. I asked him if it’s ok to drive and he said well the car could be a safety issue . So I did my own research and saw that there were recalls on this same year vehicle and I am questioning why my vehicle was not recalled. If this issue poses a highly likely safety issue than why isn’t all vehicle of 2015 Jeep Cherokee being recalled and the issue being fixed. My truck is still at the dealership and the cost to repair is over $3000.00 which is absolutely insane for Jeep to be aware of an issue in the manufacturing. I am lucky that my [XXX] daughter recognized an issue and had the wherewithal to get the vehicle in a safe location, and thank GOD that she wasn’t on the freeway. This is absolutely scary that people are made aware of something and do nothing. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Continual problems with Power train led to replacement of the Power Transfer Unit at 94,910 miles [ under warranty ] The vehicle is not usable when the PTU fails. The vehicle will slam into gear hard, or fail to move for a few seconds when trying to take off from a stop sign and then slam into gear. Very dangerous when pulling into traffic. Now after experiencing the same erratic behavior at 123000 miles , i took the jeep back to the same dealer only to find the Power transfer unit again must be replaced. The replacement only lasted about 28,000 miles. I am retired, this jeep has not been abused nor driven off road. This could cause an accident or strand me somewhere making me afraid to drive it. This problem seems to occur often with this model and also has reduced the value of this vehicle .
The vehicle shows "4wd system unavailable service required" i took the vehicle to the dealership where they stated the PTU transfer case is not shifting. Dealership did not fix and said it is not covered under the recall for the PTU.
This vehicle is not safe to drive because it doesn't brake, it takes several seconds to reduce speed after hitting the brakes, and at high speeds it takes longer, which can put anyone's life at risk. The engine is damaged, it releases smoke and is leaking oil, and it heats up when you're moving on the freeway, which can be dangerous. The car loses power while moving. They told me that it was in perfect condition, which they lied to me, putting the lives of many people at risk. The second day after I took it out of the dealership, I realized that the engine was damaged. It started to smoke and lose power. On the road, I almost had an accident because the car didn't brake well. They sold it to me like that. They didn't want to give me the carfax and it hasn't been inspected. They told me that it was in perfect condition, which they lied to me, putting the lives of many people at risk. The emergency parking brake failed and became stuck in place, making my vehicle unable to get out of park to drive. I am able to shift gears but the EPB is stuck. There is also instances where the EPB has turned on by itself in the middle of driving. I saw there was research ongoing with this issue in 2014-2021 Jeep Cherokees (PE 22-009) which is related to a previous recall (15v-393). I hope this issue is able to progress to a recall as this is severely dangerous and inconvenient. Thankfully this has only happened while I was driving not near other cars but in the event this should happen on the highway for instance it could be catastrophic.
On [XXX] I was leaving a Nebraska residence to return to Montana. During the trip I had to stop on the highway because the lift gate released and flew open at 55 mph. At that time I pulled over and the gate would not close. I tried several times to close it and so did other drivers who stopped to help me. At that time the resolution was to disconnect the battery and then reconnect. This helped. Upon returning home there was discussion with other drivers on my policy that stated they have had the same issue on prior dates in the last 6 months. The lift gate mechanism has been recalled and replaced on this vehicle on two occasions but the latching mechanism is the issue for this vehicle. To unlatch while in transit and not relatch make it a hazard. Conversations with local shops do not result in a resolution. at 21,734 miles the transmission has failed and cause the engine to rev to 5000RPM in park. service technician found excessive metal in transmission fluid and recommends replacing transmission, transmission cooler and transmission lines for $8085 plus tax. Technician was able to recreate the action of engine revving to 5000RPM once in park.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 - 65 MPH, the vehicle failed to accelerate and independently shifted to neutral, causing the vehicle to fail to accelerate. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact coasted to the side of the road and had the vehicle towed to a certified mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The mechanic retrieved NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V529000 (Power Train) from the website. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 101,500.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and depressing the accelerator pedal, the Electronic Throttle Control warning light illuminated on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH off an exit ramp, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the RPMs increased, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The contact stated that the failure had mainly occurred while driving between 2nd and 3rd gear, and between 1st and 2nd gear. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
