NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Jeep Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
A few months after i got the car, a bump feels at first gear before 2nd gear starts, its been doint it till today, a vibration started a year ago, it hasn't gone away, power steering went out year and a half ago or so, its electrical so i had to change the whole part, went car is turned off you can hear the vibration sound for a second, some mechanics say the motor mounts are worn out, who kmows. For 2015 to have theese problems? I have older cars and dont have these problems, wonder what these can be. Guess just bad car and still paying it, good thing its still runs, just hoping not to break the road.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the residence and then to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the PCM needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
Last July of 2022, my first issue was an electrical notice that caused the airbag and seatbelt sensor in the vehicle to continuously go off, which took several months to get fixed through the manufacturer of my Jeep Cherokee 2015. As of 2023, I have received two recall notices, and neither of which have been resolved since April of 2023. Since those notices, my check engine light has gone off and is getting repaired this week, there's been a leak inside the vehicle of a liquid spilling into the passenger side floor mat, and also the brakes have deteriorated quickly -- they were last repaired at 77,000 miles and are again experiencing issues at 99,000 miles. There is a specific manufacturer in my area (Salt Lake Valley Chrystler Dodge Jeep RAM on State Street in Salt Lake City, UT) that has been borderline negligent and straight up rude on multiple occasions.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact received a recall notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V338000 (Electrical System, Structure); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated while putting groceries in the trunk on two different occasions, the liftgate came down unexpectedly and hit her head. There was no warning illuminated. The local dealer and other unknown dealers were contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised that the remedy is expected to be available in 2024. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Vehicle was parked at 10pm. Vehicle ignition was off. Vehicle was locked. Nothing left on. No one returned to the car for annything. Approximately 3 and half hours later, electrical fire started inside the drivers side rear quarter panel under the taillight (on the body, not the taillight on the lift gate) . By the time the car alarm was heard, the fire was spreading from the panel into the rest rear of the vehicle. Fire department arrived and extinguished the fire.
2015 Jeep Latitude caught fire in the middle of the night on 03/29/2023 (6 weeks before Jeep's latest recall) with the ignition off, parked in my driveway - no one in it and the ignition had been off for over 3 hours. Fire started under the driver's side tail light INSIDE the framework of the Jeep with the electrical wiring. What is jeep going to do for those of us who have already lost their vehicle because of a Jeep design flaw? (FYI, Stellantis/FCA/Mopar/Jeep are all aware of this situation, and Stellantis reply to me was they would not tell me the cause of why my Jeep caught on fire and offered no solutions to what I was facing - their response to me was barely 3 weeks before they sent out the recall so Stellantis lied from the beginning about the issue and denied all accountability since it happened before they sent the recall even though they had been "investigating" the issue for over a 6 months at least with other Jeeps)
I currently have 87000 miles. I have a service 4 wheel drive 4 wheel drive unavailable light. I had this light scanned and it turns out that my ptu is defective and malfunctioning. I recently did research on this and found out there was a recall on this issue. The recall number is w47 campaign number 20V343. There’s another recall number w48 campaign number 20E037. These are related to the ptu in models 2014 through 2017. Not sure why my vehicle was not included in this recall. From what I was reading this defective part can cause serious safety issues. I never received a recall notice for this even though my vehicle is a 2015 which apparently has this issue that jeep know about. The part alone for the ptu is over 1000 dollars and I no longer have warranty.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle it displayed a message stating “Service Parking Brake”. After stopping the vehicle and placing it in parking, the parking brake engaged itself and would not release, rendering the vehicle undrivable. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the electronic parking brake had malfunctioned due to water contamination. All recalls have been performed and are up to date. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000
My jeep Cherokee have a 4wd warning indication services need. It automatically shifts my power train to snow. Also when in park. The vehicle starts to go to neutral. Please recall this. My car is 2015 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk. I’ve never had an accident and this is either a system glitch or engine issue that can cause damage and injury.
The emergency brake engages on its own. In the past i have been able to release it after it "auto engages", sometimes taking more than 1 attempt. I stopped at a gas station last week. When I started my car to leave, the emergency brake auto engaged itself and would not release. Error message on screen read "service park brake". I called the local service department of chrystler/dodge/jeep dealership. Followed their directions to release the brake. However it would not release still. The incident left me and 2 children stranded for 2 hours. I had my vehicled towed to the dealership. Currently still awaiting resolution.
Water fills up in the spare tire component which corroded the emergency brake box. I took it to the local Sunoco to fix they contacted Chrysler and was told to give the car back to me as is I should have it fixed by the dealership. My car is currently at a dealership and they’re telling me I have to pay $1600 for the repair. But if you Google this is a common problem with this vehicle.
Went for service and they stated my EPB is not engaging properly, they could tell water was in the spare tire well at some point....I bought this car in 2019 & was never told of this possible problem This incident obviously happened before the date of this complaint, but I was not aware until service technician told me on 2/21/2023 "Power going to Park Brake Module---No power out" Thank you for your time
Difficulty shifting gears
When I was driving the gear shift into Netural, all lights on gear shift were lit up red (Park, Reverse, Netural, Drive). The message said “Press brake, Put car in P, Select Gear”. This is so scary because it has happened twice to me. When I took to Midas as soon as it happen, since they were open. The ran a code that read U0001, and read that this is a power train issue. And informed me to take to the dealership because it should be covered for the recall that’s in these models. While driving on highways I have had to put car on side of road to keep from a crash. This is a real hazard and safety concern.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph she heard a loud popping sound and the sunroof shattered. The contact sustained minor cuts but did not receive medical attention. The contact stated that the glass shattered obstructing her view. The contact then stated that she continued to drive the vehicle and parked at her residence. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic and was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,230.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her husband was driving out of the driveway, there was a loud grinding noise coming from underneath the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the input splines needed to be replaced. The mechanic made the contact aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train) and the contact was advised to have the repair completed by a dealer. The contact made a local dealer aware of the failure and the recall; however, the contact was informed that the warranty had expired for the parts for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
Dear NHTSA, Subject: Manufacturing transmission malfunction - TRAFFIC SAFETY Your attention is kindly requested. I own a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, diesel 2.0L, 170hp, 4x4, 9-speed [XXX] automatic. My car’s VIN is: [XXX]. On 21800km for the first time, while I was driving on the highway, a "service transmission" message came up on the dial, and after a while, the engine stopped moving the wheels and went into neutral. I stepped on the gas but it wouldn't move the wheels. If I was driving in the left lane, the only thing sure is that an accident would have occurred. The car's problem has to do with the 9-speed automatic gearbox. Immediately, I informed the official dealer of Jeep in Greece (Auto One). They told me that there was an official recall (S55) for this model. The car was repaired by the dealer on May 15thof 2017.However, after 500 km the problem was shown again and again. Every time the problem was shown I visited the specific dealer, but he didn't admit that the same problem might happen again. Because of this,I was forced to visit another service dealer, December 28th 2018 (24.300km), who confirmed in writing that the problem was unsolved. He advised me to go to the first dealer (Auto One). So, I went again to Auto One. They informed me that according to official guidelines from FCA/Jeep, any further repair concerning this problem should be paid for by the car owner without any guarantee. I found their attitude very offensive, so I preferred not to pay such a huge amount of money for something I was not responsible for. As I didn't use my car every day and the problem was not permanent I tried to find another way to solve the problem. Lately, the problem is shown very often, while many days the car does not start at all. The car today has only 41.000 kilometers. I found that there are many complaints from different areas of the world about the same issue, around 800.000 cars. Therefore Jeep after many complaints has INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Electric Parking Brake on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited V6 has malfunction. Water has leaked into the car, creating standing water that affected the EPB module and is now inoperable. I cannot release the parking brake and the car cannot be driven. This happened while I drove to my mail box. I was luckily close to home but this is a serious safety risk. The brake cannot be released to even have it towed, even after several attempts of different methods to release. I cannot get the part to fix the problem as it is on back order with no ETA.
SVC 4WD service light came on 02/04/2023 at 51000 miles 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. Took it into Jeep dealer to check it out and was reported that the PTU was bad and needs to be replaced. Warranty not valid due to more than 5 years.
Electric Park Brake (EPB) light came on while parked. Parking brake actuator would not contract. Vehicle now can’t be driven as the parking brake is engaged. Found the part from a dealership and when I went to replace it, the parking brake actuator was flooded with what looked like brake fluid. New $130+ OEM part was installed and fixed the issue. Approximately 6 months later, the same issue occurred with the new OEM part. I have seen people say this issue has happened while driving. I’ve heard of dozens of complaints of this part already. When will this become a recall? It seems to me that it should have already been addressed since this vehicle has been around nearly 9 years.
Transmission has malfunctioned, will not properly shift into higher gears, when stopped is not able to be put into park. Issue started with not warnings, was driving perfectly fine before. Cruise control has failed, parking brake has malfunctioned, and power steering has malfunctioned.
I was making a left turn onto the southbound roadway which which consists of six Lanes. I was getting up to approximately 35 mph when the parking symbol light came on and the screen was showing service parking brake and service transmission. I was still in Drive when the car started coasting and when I stepped on the gas, all it did was revved. I had to Coast into the left turning lane and came to a stop as I tried to put it in park I could hear a whirring noise coming from under the dash as if the parking break button was pressed. I could not get it out of Drive and I tried putting it in neutral then back to drive then into neutral but could not get the car to move. Finally was able to get it into park and I shut the car off. After about 10 minutes I started the car up and the dash showed nothing I put it into drive and it kicked into gear and as I accelerated it was feeling like I couldn't get out of second. Then the brake light came on the p in a circle with an exclamation mark came on, ABS light came on, skid light came on., check engine light came on, and the screen flashing back and forth between service parking brake and service transmission. I was able to make it 2 miles to work at very slow speed and put it in park and turned it off. There was more rollback than normal when put in park so I put a chuck under the wheel so it wouldn't roll. Approximately an hour later I took it up to Tire Plus to see what was wrong. Upon picking it up they told me that I had to take to a dealer. The following codes are; u0418, u04828, u1412, p1720, u0420, uc003, u0415. When I went to pick the car up some hours later it started right up like normal and halfway home which is approximately 3miles, everything lit up again this time the engine sounded rough and again I had to Coast to the right side of the road shut it off wait 10 minutes, start it up and I was able to get it home, where it's been since. I'm very concerned for my safety. From Reading, alot of others are as well.
The contact owns 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the Start/Stop warning light would remain illuminated. Additionally, the horn failed to make an audible sound when engaged. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who replaced the horn; however, the failures persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 33,000. The VIN was not available. The contact stated that they have been driving without the horn.
After a Jeep Dealership performed a recall, the Service Shifter indicator came on. The indicator blocks important information on the dash screen such as speed and other vehicle info. There was no issue or light that appeared prior to the dealer getting their hands on to the car.
Vehicle Parking brake randomly engages. Warning lights and "Service Parking Brake" Brings vehicle to stop, can not get brake to disengage. Repair garage inspected vehicle. Water intrusion in parking brake module. Confirmed myself of water in module area. Referred to a Jeep Dealership- along with TSB#08-060.16. Towed to dealer. Dealership is avoiding repair. Told battery was no good, causing issue. Battery was less than year old. Battery brought back for warranty. Battery functioning at 98%- no issue. Return to dealership- still told battery could be issue, could not produce tech readout off a battery test. Refuse to look at root cause. Will no acknowledge TSB provided.
Parking brake was randomly engaging. Currently engaged will not release. Mechanic ID issue. WATER INTRUSION in parking break module. Claims it’s a known issue but no recalls have been issued. Parts may be delayed 2 months.
The “service shifter” warning repetitively pops up on the dash obscuring speedometer while traveling including at highway speeds. Dealer says the shifter wiring harness must be replaced at a cost of over $300. This single Jeep dealer says they have had to replace the harness on hundreds of Jeeps & agrees that it should be a matter for mfg recall.
Oil cooler housing is leaking. As such will not pass state inspection as it's a hazard to burn therefore a safety issue. I noticed online that there is a class action suit pending and the Jeep is aware of this problem but yet it is not been recalled. It's going to cost me $900 to fix
My brakes have totally locked up on my vehicle. The vehicle is undrivable at this point. I just have it sitting in the garage for now.
Parking Brake Module has completely locked up and the vehicle is undrivable
Oil cooler cracked Dec 2022. Oil cooler cracked again Nov 2023. I heard this is an ongoing issue and should be a recall with people having to replace it every single year! Could become a safety issue as it blows spoke all over the place.
SVC 4WD service needed; rear powertrain unit needs replacing, preventing 4-wheel-drive from engaging putting safety of others at risk. Problem does not need reproduction; problem not inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance, representatives. This is a well known issue and the inability to use 4-wheel-drive is an extreme hazard. https://www.jeepcherokeeclub.com/threads/possibly-bad-ptu.246802/#post-2988620
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while his wife was operating the vehicle, a flashing warning message displayed “Service Parking Brake”. After stopping the vehicle and activating the parking brake, the brake would not release rendering the vehicle undrivable. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the electronic parking brake had malfunctioned due to water contamination. The electronic parking brake was disabled by the dealer and the vehicle was later driven to the local mechanic who diagnosed that water had leaked from the C-Pillar and pressure vents onto the electronic parking brake. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 88,000.
I experienced an Emergency Parking Brake malfunction while car was moving. Car suddenly had the message "Service Parking Brake" while driving on the highway. Check engine, barking brake, and traction control lights all came on. Pulled off the highway to a shopping center and when putting the car in park, car was stuck in the middle of the road in park unable to change gears. Car was able to be disengaged only by overriding the gear in order to be moved to a safe location, but remained otherwise in Park with the same "Service Parking Brake" message. Dealer has mentioned that the brake module was corroded or shorted and the entire system needed to be replaced along with complete disassembly of shifting mechanism.
Water has leaked into the rear cargo area and caused the emergency brake module assemble to corrode causing the e brake to suddenly engage. The evidence shows leaking has been going on for possibly years
Air bag service light came on. Took it to a reputable repair business. Diagnosed with codes B0020-13 Left side seat deployment Squib 1. Found tech service bulletin #10-002-18 for replacing air bag seat harness and seat bolts for this code. Chrysler recommends BOTH harnesses are replaced (left and right). Chrysler is charging $2,677.16 For the parts. They say it is a 'common' problem and in fact the parts are on back order until at least January 19th. This is a safety issue as the airbag will not deploy. The vehicle is less than 10 years old, which meets two out of three criteria for it to be considered a recall issue. I cannot afford this type of repair which is a problem I did nothing to create.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin Number: 09-002-14 (Engine). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed as a cam shaft failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 99,800.
Power transfer unit failure. Very common and very expensive fix on 2015 Cherokee’s. This caused my vehicle to lose all power on the highway almost resulting in me being rear ended. With what seemed like divine intervention I made it safely to the shoulder with almost no steering capabilities and zero power.
Loss of power while driving
Water shields in lift gate failed, allowing water to seep into electrical components of car. All electrical systems failed including parking brake, lights, locks, and ignition.
My 2015 Jeep Cherokee trail hawk has major shifting problems . It hard shifts at times and doesn’t engage at times which can cause an accident. I have researched online and there are thousands of people complaining about the very same issue.
We own a 2015 Jeep Cherokee 2.4 L FWD vehicle. In the last 3 months, we have encountered ignition issues. We had several misfires when attempting to start the engine. We brought this to the attention of our local auto mechanic, and they were unsure of the cause. We spent over $1500 on inspections and repairs which included spark plug replacement, throttle body replacement, knock sensor replacement, ignition coils replacement and putting in a new battery. We have been to the auto shop several times because the check engine lights keeps coming on and the bills keep adding up. We now received a letter regarding the fact that our vehicle has a recall for catalyst efficiency. According to the notice there may be a loss of catalyst CO/NOx conversion efficiency resulting from the catalyst operating at high temperatures. When the catalyst temperature is elevated, there is a higher rate of misfire, and the misfire can cause immediate damage to the catalyst since it brings unburned fuel and oxygen into the catalyst. I am confident that this loss in conversion efficiency is the reason the ignition misfires in my Jeep. I have receipts and bills to prove that I have spent over $1500 in the last month on engine repairs that still haven't solved the problem. I have contacted a local JEEP service shop who has ordered the part needed for this recall. How do I receive compensation for the money I have already paid for the repairs related to this recall?
Vehicle started to make a random thud underneath at different speeds. Could not find any reason or view anything. SERVICE 4 WD LIGHT CAME ON. Could not find anyone to check the code for more than 2 weeks. Felt the vehicle was unsafe to drive even when light went off. The anxiety actually put me in the Hospital on Thanksgiving morning with elevated blood pressure. I parked the car until my service appointment Dec 6 2022 It needs the PTU now per Jeep Sansone Rahway NJ 732-587-1100 How does it not fit the recall requirements when the same vehicle of those years does?????
PTU making noises about to go out
Engine Oil Filter/Oil housing is malfunctioned or defected for my model car. Malfunction is causing leakage into the engine which can result explosion or worst damage to vehicle. Warning engine light appeared on vehicle to notify of oil leaking into engine. First appeared 3 months ago. Company has redesigned particular part because of the same popular issue nationwide
Error code popped up saying the 4wd system is unavailable. Found that there was a recall for my model year for bad PTUs, but my specific vehicle is not on the recall list. Never taken off road, just normal daily driving, about 60k on the odometer. Jeep needs to recall all of these units and fix this problem, as it is all too common.
Transmission shifter failure intermittent inability to place in park . Service shifter light on with no repair available. Entire shifter and bezel and wiring replaced, and problem came back within one years' time.
I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. It has been in the shop many times due to poor manufacturing and recalls. Prior to me purchasing the vehicle in May 2020, it was involved with a recall for a water leak and powerlift gate short due to water damage. It has leaked water into the hatch/ trunk area since I purchased it. I have spoken with 2 dealerships about the issue. The most recent was November 1, 2022 when it was left with Rockwall Chrysler. My issue is that the Electronic Parking Brake Module was damaged to due heavy rain and the continued leak. On October 30, 2022, we were trying to leave in the cherokee and the Service Brake warning light was on as well as service shifter. The vehicle was stuck due to a malfunctioning parking brake. After multiple attempts, the brake disengaged and I continued to work. October 31, when I started the vehicle the following warning/ service lights were on and remains on: Service Brake Light (2 different lights) ACC/FCW not available / service Auto start/ stop unavailable/service Airbag warning light (went off 11/3/22) 4WD Unavailable/service On my drive home from work, the electronic parking brake engaged while I was turning across traffic and I almost was hit by a large delivery truck. Once I managed to get the vehicle to drive, it happened again on the highway service road and I was very close to being rear ended by an 18 wheeler that was driving behind me. The dealership did no repairs due to the $575.00 charge I cannot pay to diagnose and do a leak test. I explained this was involved with a recall and they basically told me it was fixed in with Canada or Ohio and I needed to return to that dealer (I live in TX). Which is not possible because the vehicle is sitting in my drive way and will not move due to the brake being stuck on. I picked the unrepaired vehicle up on 11/3/22 and was advised its best to get rid of as soon as possible. The problem is that I owe roughly $13,000 on the jeep. I cant afford this and a rental
On 10/30/22 driving the vehicle on a 2 lane road with no shoulder the car locked and stopped in on going traffic with cars avoiding to hit us. State police had to come to due to dangerous situation of accident and car was towed. Towed to jeep dealer and told the transmission needs replaced due to misaligned gear ratio. This is a 2015 kept in excellent condition with 55,000 miles. Told cost is 8,000 to repair. With all the transmission problems and lawsuits with jeep and known issue this should have been recalled or repairs made before incident. This vehicle is unsafe and we could have been killed. The consumer stated the vehicle has been traded in and needs a new transmission.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle jolted and shook abnormally. The contact stated that the vehicle did not lose forward momentum, and that there were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that jolt felt like the transmission was slipping. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer and diagnosed; however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer replaced the battery however, the failure had reoccurred. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.
