Service shifter light on
2017 Jeep Cherokee PTU failure August 5, 2021 new one installed 43,795 miles/ paid by warranty - Second failed PTU Oct 18, 2024 80,000 miles / paid self pay $5,000 Should be immediate recall Car in new condition, always currently serviced Never driven off-road PTU units should not be failing, car has had history of transmission/PTU/ shifter and radio issues and front struts incorrectly installed from factory, warranty refused to repair
Our 2017 Jeep Cherokee had the service 4WD light come on Tuesday. Our mileage is 60,800. We took it to our local mechanic, who ran a diagnostic. The code C14A7-97 came up as active on our vehicle. Our mechanic said there was a recall for this issue for our model year. We found "Safety Recall W47/NHTSA 20V-343 PTU Input Spline". Since our Jeep had the exact issue that the recall covers and falls within the 2014-2017 manufacture years, we made an appointment with a local Chrysler dealership. We took it in today for them to look at it. They confirmed that the code active on our vehicle is C14A7-97 and that our 4wd system is not working and that if we are in a situation that we need 4wd we will be at risk. They then told us that our VIN is not listed on the recall and our bill would be $3,200. I pressed that it makes no sense that we are having the exact issue in the recall, that we have a Jeep Cherokee as listed in the recall, that our model year is between 2014-2017 as in the recall, and that our mileage is exactly around the mileage listed in the recall that this problem surfaces("on about 67,240"); but it isn't listed in the recall. How can we be having the exact issue reported and not be covered in the recall? We feel they are taking some loophole and risking the safety of their customers, specifically our safety.
The Electronic Parking Brake turned on after putting vehicle in PARK. Could this brake have been applied while driving? If so, there could have been multiple fatalities or serious injuries. I did find some text on how there was a lawsuit going on about this.
My car shuts off when I go over little bumps and light comes on saying press break and shift into park. Then it doesnt start right away but eventually starts again. Also when I go over little bumps my interior lights turn on.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message “4-WD Service Required” was displayed. In addition, the contact stated that the wheels were not functioning as intended. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle was independently reset; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 129,000.
Service shifter light came on and gear shift lights are all red. There does not seem to be a mechanical issue but the message does not go away until after a restart. Also, while the message is displayed, you cannot access any other visual features like the speedometer or navigation system.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and became inoperable. The vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer, and it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V302000 (POWER TRAIN). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Message "service shifter" pops up on the instrument panel, and a series of red alert lights appear next to every gear on the automatic transmission shifter lever. The dealer is unable to fix the problem! They replace the wiring harness, they replace the shifters themselves, they reset the computers ? And the problem always returns!
The 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude we own under the VIN entered is having issues with 4-wheel drive warning lights and shifter warning lights. The issues are connected to the PTU and Park break shifter selection. The same issues recalled under 45A and W47 FCA recalls. I believe the same issues exist with my vehicle though it's not being included in the recall. The recall needs to be expanded, and FCA/Stellantis should be accountable for the problem vehicles.
4wd not working and now the speedometer keeps blinking
I need to replace the power transfer unit already on a vehicle with 70,000 cost $3500 there are 850 PTU on backorder with no ETA this is not acceptable I’m told to drive my vehicle until I can’t or buy a new vehicle. I READ ONLINE THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL W47 / NHTSA 20V-343 but I received no notification. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
POSSABLE TRANS. PR0BLEM. NEVER RECIEVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THIS PROBLEM RECALL 45a bought vehicle new dealer has sense changed hands recently trans. has a skip when shifting a causes a thump
2017 Jeep Cherokee shows "Service Shifter" in dashboard and all lights light up on shifter. This problem first happened in 2020 with 33,101 miles when the car was under warranty. The dealer "fixed" the problem and it went away. Now at 79,000 the exact same problem is back again. There was a lot of research on the issue done 4 years ago and most of the information came from [XXX] where everybody has the same problem. Obviously, whatever fix my previous dealer did is not the solution that Jeep recommended, if they recommended anything at all. Date: [XXX] I went to the Exxon gas station in Richmond ,VA to fill up for the trip back to Rocky Mount, N.C. When I put the handle hose into truck hole to pump the gas the gas would not go down the hose. It splashed out on the ground, on my feet and clothes. After several attempts with no resolve, I contacted my insurance for roadside assistance. Which led to the Jeep towed to N.C.I view this as a manufacture defect. I researched this issue and found that there are others consumers dealing with the same difficulty with their Jeep. They can not longer pump gas in the tank. This is a manufacture issue which should be investigated for a recall of this impairment, defected vehicles. In order to correct and repair the defected component or system malfunctions. I’m not the only one with the same issues. I know a lady who has the same problem with her vehicle and has been quoted thousands of dollars to fix it. Cylinders and engine housing.. anti freeze leak.. and then expect us to pay expensive car payments.
Service shifter light goes on just put a lot of money in this car and nothing but a problem
UNKNOWN Airbags did not deploy when struck by a semi that crossed the median and hit me then pinned me against guardrail that was also damaged/destroyed.
We experienced a loss of motive power while on the interstate in busy high speed traffic [XXX] . We had to attempt to maneuver the constantly slowing vehicle to the shoulder while being passed by tractor trailer drivers who were driving at full speed. Luckily 2 of them in the right lane were paying attention and swerved aggressively to avoid hitting my family and I. This very easily could have resulting in multiple fatalities. It was extremely terrifying to not be in control of the vehicle. This experience sounds exactly like the issues referenced in the recent safety recall 01C, but the FCA website doesn't show my VIN as being affected. They need to expand the VIN list to cover this vehicle and fix it. My family and I are terrified to drive this thing now, not knowing when this event will happen again. Thank you for your help. The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH and making a turn, the vehicle shutoff inadvertently. The contact stated that the service shifter message was displayed. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the vehicle shutoff but was restarted. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was due to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V302000 (Power Train). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the failure was due to the gear shifter. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.
We fixed recall W47 21-017-21 on July 2021, PTU is damaged and broke again, but I do not qualify for the Extended warranty because this issue was caught early on and did not present any error codes or affect any drive ability of the vehicle yet. I see there is a recall W48 for those that already had the PTU replaced but still have the issue. Chrysler and Dealership will not honor it since there are no error codes because the issue was found early during an annual state inspection before anything catastrophic could happen.
While I was driving, the brakes completely failed. I was not able to stop my car. The brakes could not be tapped and the pedal simply did not move. I was only able to move the pedal approximately 1/2in applying tremendous pressure and the car slowed down to a stop. Upon repair, the “vacuum brake booster bump” failed, which is (I am told) a part unique to Jeep/Chrysler. There is no way to know when this part is going to break as it does not have signs of wear and tear and cannot otherwise be maintained. I was lucky this malfunction did not happen on a highway or a busy road as it certainly would have resulted in a catastrophic accident.
PTU unit malfunctioned while driving on freeway and almost caused an accident. Cannot repair due to no parts available. Cannot drive the vehicle.
At random times, the vehicle will come up with "Service Shifter" on the dash, making it so that no other items can be viewed, including speed and such. Simultaneously, all lights on the shifter will come on, and no manual gear changes can be executed. The only way to get this cleared is to turn off the engine and restart. yhis can come up at the time of starting the engine and moving into reverse, or it can come up at random times whern driving at freeway speeds, so there is no reliable pattern on when this will occur. Shops have said that there is no remedy that they are aware of, but this appears to be a common issue amongst this vehicle with other owners. If this continues, I worry that this may cause a long-term incident for my family.
I closed the trunk door but the indicator on the dashboard is still saying that the lift gate is open. I checked to make sure that nothing was blocking it's way. There was no prior indications.
I have been hearing a grinding noise coming from my car for a few months. I was having another service on my car and tire replacement at an independent provider and asked them to diagnosing the noise. After completing their diagnosis they determined I need my PTU replaced. "Diagnoses grinding noise coming from PTU. Needs PTU replaced." There are current PTU recalls on other Jeep Cherokees years 2014-2017. My mechanic reviewed the recall with me and told me to contact Jeep . I went to Jeep dealership with supporting documentation from my mechanic. My 2017 Jeep Cherokee is having the same issue as recall notice for PTU. I am being told by Jeep that due to no open recall issues for my VIN Jeep wont make the necessary repairs under recall. My mechanic advised me to file a formal report as I meet all the criteria for the recall and my Jeep should be added to the recall and covered through Jeep as a recall defect. He also advised me to limit driving my car long distances or at high speeds as the safety concerns are the PTU will eventually break which in turn will seize my axle, which would render my vehicle immobile. If this occurred in heavy or fast traffic the accident that would ensue could be deadly. I have uploaded the necessary documentation for review. I have the up most confidence that Jeep will extend the recall notice to cover my PTU replacement and get me safely back on the road.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while attempting to drive from a complete stop and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond immediately, but responded after several attempts. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle jerked and shuddered, and there was an abnormal grinding sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to JMB Automotive, where the diagnostic trouble code C14A7-97 was retrieved. The mechanic informed the contact that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train) and determined that the failure was related to the recall. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the same assessment was made; however, the dealer informed the contact that the part to repair the vehicle was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was referred to the manufacturer. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the dealer would be contacted and would be advised to add the vehicle to the recall waiting list. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
After starting my Jeep and driving it down the road for about 10 minutes the dashboard gave a warning to(service the shifter) all lights illuminated red. I pulled over and turned the Jeep off and it went away but has done it several times since and also happened multiple times before. I bought the car used and no warranty’s. Multiple people have stated online that they are having the same issues. Along with transmission having problems also. Please help us out and put out a recall. Apparently it’s a concern due to all the people reporting it online.
vehicle jolted while driving, then lost all power to wheels. grinding noise coming from front end. rolled backwards when placed in park.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to be restarted. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle briefly returned to normal functionality, but the failure reoccurred. The low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission mount. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the vehicle was not yet diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The VIN was not available.
The vehicle jerks or jumps while driving on the highway. I took the dealership twice to get it fixed and paid out of my pocket but problem is not resolved. Now the issue leads to the power transfer case (PTU) failure. I went to the dealership for diagnosis and they told it will cost me $3900 out of pocket to fixed the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that after restarting the vehicle, the message "Service Shifter" was displayed. The message was also displayed intermittently while driving. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the 4-WD unavailable warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the PTU (Power Transfer Units). The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 21-017-21. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 71,076.
Vehicle is putting up a code for “service shifter” while driving, which turns off when the car is turned off. Code does not read for dealerships to fix issue. it is reoccurring and we are concerned as we have seen a 2017 jeep Cherokee wreck out after throwing this code and “locking up the engine”. We are secondhand owners of this jeep and believe the previous owner sold this car because of said issue because it came up within a month of us purchasing the car.
Service shifter light displays randomly with PRND all light up. Goes away if you turn the car off remove key and restart. Have taken it to a technician in the past, they said they couldn't tell us anything.
Parking brake has automatically engaged twice while at intersection, during the 1 week I have owned this used vehicle. This is an obvious and critical safety risk, causing a possible wreck from behind, or even worse, getting t-boned in an intersection. This is a know issue, and very irresponsible for Jeep OR NHTSA not to list as a recall. Does someone have to die in a wreck for this OBVIOUS safety issue to be addressed?
SERVICE SHIFTER WARNING LIGHT
I was driving up bridge in morning rush traffic suddenly without warning lost drive cv axel on passegner side broke and had to be towed. I called 911 and the police tried to put car in drive and car would just roll back and it almost went into the unit. when the car suddenly stopped I was just lucky no one ran into me, I was in the middle of the road & could not move the car.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her husband was driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact's husband struck a curb. The contact's husband depressed the brake pedal and attempted to make a turn, but the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The "Service Shifter" message was displayed, and the vehicle made an abnormal sound and stalled while driving. The steering wheel was firm while making the turn. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the failure was self-corrected. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the independent mechanic that the gear shifter needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.
This past year my 2017 Jeep Cherokee has started to randomly turn on the Service Shifter light and at the same time all the shifter lights turn red. The transmission starts acting differently as well when it comes on. If I pull over and shut the car off and then turn it back on it will be normal again. I cannot bring this into the dealership as my warranty is no longer available and I will not pay loads of money for them to tell me nothing.
Not sure
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 15 MPH, the vehicle lost power and stalled. The battery warning light was illuminated, with the message “Shift to Park or Neutral – “Depress Brake Pedal and Select Gear” displayed. The drive indicator light was blinking, and the battery was red. The vehicle was taken for an oil change, and the messages were no longer displayed; however, the failure recurred months later. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and the contact was informed that the power transfer unit had lost power; the vehicle turned off with the message to shift to park displayed. The contact stated that the failure occurred frequently. The contact stated that the vehicle stopped within 2 miles. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer where it was repaired under an undisclosed recall. The vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent failure. The contact believed that the vehicle should be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
Just bought a used 2017 jeep cherokee limited with 102,000 miles on it and within days started getting "service shifter" dash warnings. Looked up issues on jeep forms and similar jeep models between 2015-2018 experience this issue apparently.
I was driving my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 2.4L, car won't start, I have oil pressure sensor to warn me when low doesn't alert me at all, only time is when I realized a beep when I made turns and would indicate oil pressure low! I can't get my car to stop and it stalled on me while driving with no indication of low oil, and I have two kids and could have been very bad, since no power no breaks no steering!
My Jeep Cherokee(vin [XXX] ) was being flat towed behind a class a motorhome. On 4 separate occasions the front wheels of the jeep started bucking right to left and back to opposite side causing the whole motorhome to violently vibrate. 1) The first time it happened was at about 15 mph while turning left onto a connecting road. It started vibrating so I pulled to side of street and stopped. After getting out and discovering nothing of note I started off and the wobble was gone. 2) Second time was while driving at around 50 mph. There was a bump and grade change in the road and the wobble started. Much more violent than the first. I had to stop while in the traffic lane, with no place to pull over. This time I could see the wobble in the rear camera of the motorhome. Jeep was violently bucking back and forth as before but much stronger. 3) Slower speed at about 20 mph it happended again. Had to come to a stop before it corrected. 4) 40 mph and a very subtle road surface change caused wobble. I disconnected Jeep and drove it by itself to home. Never had an incident other than while being towed. This has happened 4 times in the past 5 trips of around 300 miles each. Since then I have discovered articles about "Jeep Death Wobbles" and have not found any evidence where Jeep has even acknowledged there is an issue. Until I see user manual that mentions a "Mopar Wiring Kit" that needs to be installed. I do not know if this is considered a recall or if is an after thought mentioned in the manual. At any rate the Jeep was sold as a flat towable vehicle and Jeep should stand behind it and install the Mopar fix as a safety fix at no charge to customers who bought it as a flat tow vehicle. "Service Shifter" appeared on the dash and the lights "P", "R", "N", "D", and the one between "-" and "+" were all lit up, as if the electronics did not know which gear the car was in. Car would then not go above 50 mph while on the interstate and shifting was slow and jerky. When you're unable to control elements of your driving, you are unable to ensure a safe experience. This shifter issue is directly correlated. The problem is widespread in online forums and seems to be predictable with this model and line of cars. The car is available for inspection upon request. It's common for this to be an issue with cars less than 50000 miles which is a clear sign that this is a manufacturer's fault that needs to be corrected.
Indicated service shifter changed , yet still never used only had 65k . Change the shifter and still shows on my screen .
When driving my vehicle going 30 miles per hour the car stopped by itself and gave error message “ Shift to park or neutral Press brake or select gear” . I have to put my car in park and try and restart the vehicle. This has happened 4 times with in the last week.
This is a well known issue, and apparently the manufacturer is not doing anything bout it. You can read many many complaints here: [XXX] My problem began a few weeks ago. The "Service Shifter" message. Disappeared after I turned car off. Now it's back. Of course I'm sure the dealer will be happy to see me and apply a $500 bandaid that won't fix the problem. Obviously a manufacturing defect that will only get addressed when someone is killed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
On [XXX] my 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude experienced full power failure while driving, resulting in an uncontrolled stopped with lack of power brakes, steering or other electrical assistance while in middle of road with traffic traveling 20 mph just avoiding impact with car in front of me. Had I been on highway or traveling faster I may have encountered a deadly impact to rock walls on road or surrounding traffic or oncoming traffic. There is a recall listed [XXX] Campaign number [XXX]. I have made a complaint to JEEP 800-853-1403 who noted my vin with case number [XXX]. My jeep vin is not included in recall notice but clearly should be and covered for repair under [XXX] . My Jeep regained power 5 min later and I drove it knowing unsafe to repair shop where it sits. My Vin should be added to the already listed appx 67k jeeps 2014-2017 year. I also have MOPAR extended warranty. I will not drive my jeep for obvious reasons until the repair is made. This is a potential deadly issue that needs to be extended to the currant recall listing. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
