I have a 2017 JEEP Cherokee North edition. All of the lights lit up on my gear shifter console and then a warning displayed on the dashboard saying SERVICE SHIFTER. I have never heard of this nor has any dealer or mechanic. My car just shut off mid drive, luckily I was pulling into a parking lot. I parked the car and shut it off. After a few minutes I turned the key and no lights were displayed and I drove it home. This was very concerning. If I had been on the highway it could have been dangerous to myself and others. I am afraid of this happening again.
Bolts fell out of ptu and broke housing. Vehicle right now is available for inspection. Problem confirmed by local Jeep dealer. No prior warning, just started making awful noise and vibration.
Occasionally when driving vehicle will receive alert to “service shifter” all lights on shifter turn red. I was advised by dealer they have never heard of issue but when I look online there is hundreds of people with the same issue. It is possibility that shifting function can be compromised at any time with this issue.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The driver was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the power transfer unit (PTU). The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V343000 (Power Train), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 134,000.
My service 4wd light came on 6/22 and I had it replaced m. The dealership where it was done said only a 1 year warranty. Now as of yesterday light is on again with same code so once again PTU needs to be replaced again. I can’t afford this twice in less than 2 years why can’t Jeep help solve this or do recall. A lot of Jeep’s are recalled for this problem except mine why yes I file a complaint back in 6/2022 also this is crazy and I want a call back [XXX] I I’m out to much money in this piece of [XXX] u sale 2 oil coolers, drive shaft, wiring harness 2 times , popping in the front in since 2018 and got fix then 2 months after the pets warrant expired since popping. I get no help and someone is going to help with this PTU replacement or I will call an attorney INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Driver and passenger floor board become wet when it rains. Soaked to the point of molding so much moisture is in the floor and vehicle. The windshield leaks from the inside from the top/outside and interferes with visibility.

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 20-30 MPH, an alarm sounded, and the vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road on some occasions. The contact stated that the vehicle would fail to restart while turning the key in the ignition switch and would restart independently when taking her hand off the key. The contact stated that she was able to continue driving; however, the failure reoccurred several times in one day. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where engine oil was added to the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. The dealer performed a software update under an unknown recall and added oil to the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer advised the contact that they would contact the dealer and she would be contacted afterward. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.
Odometer keeps giving a “service shifter warning” turn vehicle off and back on and it goes away! Came back a few days later! All of the gears were lit up when warning came on dash board!
I was driving and it started shuttering, then I lost forward mobility. Had to have it towed to the dealership. Dealership confirmed that it is the PTU. Now currently sitting at the dealership waiting to be fixed. The contact stated there was a warranty bulletin put out by Mopar regarding the 2016/2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk about the PTU needing to be replaced. The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with the 9speed and feels it should be included in the bulletin. The dealership is charging $3690.00 out of pocket expense but the contact can not afford to fix the vehicle.
My 2017 Jeep Cherokee was manufactured in September of 2016. There’s no current recall on my VIN, however there is a recall regarding the PTU (power transfer unit) which ended September 23rd 2016, because cars after that date were manufactured with “stronger internal components”. My car only has 62,000 miles and I’m currently having the same issues as this recall describes. I’m getting a “service 4WD drive” alert, a “service shifter” alert, and “AWD unavailable” alert. I’ve taken it to multiple Jeep shops and the same code keeps popping up. C14A7-97. This code has a direct correlation with the power transfer unit causing the car to suddenly changed from 4WD to 2WD. I need to see if this can be replaced as a part of this recall. It’s available for inspection upon request.
The service shifter notification goes off and on intermittently. It has recently come on steadily without shutting off. It has been occurring since 74,000 miles.
While driving the suv will turn off. It has happened multiple times. Recently I was stuck in an interception after making a turn. It has happened before and a “service shifter” light came on. But this time no additional lights came on and suv would not turn back on
Today while driving, my vehicle’s power steering went out causing me to pull over to the side of the road. My car was running, but I was unable to move it. When I put it in drive, the lights on the shifter would flash, but the car would not change gears. The problem appears to be electrical as the battery is brand new, and the engine was running.
I parked my car and went into the store came back out tried to start my car and the message Service Transmission Restart in Park With Vehicle at Zero Speed appeared on the dashboard and my car wouldn’t start
The electronic parking brake in my 2017 Jeep Cherokee became stuck in the engaged position. The car would not move backward or forward. This happened when the car was parked on a neighborhood street. Had to have the car towed to the dealer, where the problem was diagnosed as failure of the parking brake module due to a water leak from the sunroof drain. Repair bill was over $1300. Luckily, the brake became stuck while the car was parked. Had the car been in motion, safety would definitely have been an issue.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact started the vehicle and became aware that the Auto START/STOP and Parking Brake Failure messages were displayed. The contact drove to work and parked the vehicle. The contact returned to the vehicle and attempted to start the vehicle however, the emergency parking brake was activated and could not be deactivated. The emergency parking brake light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to dealer and a diagnostic test was performed. The dealer stated that the parking brake was activated, and the parking brake module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Action Number: PE22009 (Parking Brake) as a possible solution. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

Engine cooler failed again 1 month out of 1 year warranty. Causes coolant to leak everywhere and engine oil. Happens due to colder outside temperatures and warming of the engine.
Service 4wd light turned on .. car stalled on road and almost could not pull out of the way of traffic . PTU unit ? Replacement… Jeep 2 weeks off of warranty extension… Jeep needs to recall ALL 2017 Cherokee models

At 57,537 miles, the heads-up speedometer and all other displays were disabled with an error message to "Service Shifter". At the same time, each PRNDL indicator light on the shifter panel lit up RED. Very disconcerting! I cycled the engine and that restored normal operation, but I could find no information on this error in the JEEP manual. On line, however, I found many people concerned about this same error with different potential causes/fixes.
The contact's wife owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle before him stopped suddenly, causing his vehicle to crash into the rear end of the other vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The emergency units transported the contact to the hospital, where he was informed that his upper spine disk could be dislocated or fractured. An appointment was scheduled for an MRI. A police report was filed. The vehicle remained at the scene on the side of the road. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
We was running and because was a lot of snow we put the 4X4 and then after we turning that function on the car start making weird sounds and we decided to stop the car. Then when we took the 4X4 out, the car doesn’t move anymore. Just the reverse move but not to the front. Never turn any lights transmission on and nothing. Just the transmission got stock.
No front defroster… blows but does not blow out defroster vents… Very serious problem here in Wisconsin… Could cause accident if windshield frosts up while driving
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that it had snowed, and the transmission mode was shifted to "Snow”. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle was losing forward momentum and there was an abnormal sound coming from underneath the vehicle. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle revved but lost motive power. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over and stopped the vehicle and turned off the vehicle. The contact restarted the vehicle and returned to regular drive mode however, the vehicle would not shift into drive (D). The contact had the vehicle towed to the residence. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
The car randomly activated the Electronic Parking Break and it will not disengage. I have disconnected the Battery hoping to reset the module but that did not work. This car will also randomly refuse to start or shut down. Only resetting the ECM/PCM will clear the error and get the car moving again. This is a safety concern because the Ebrake may engage while moving at high speeds. There is a warning light indicating that Ebrake needs service. There is also an unknown leak coming in from the roof and running towards the back lift gate. Water will pool in the storage section to the left and right of rear lift gate.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that there was an abnormal odor inside the vehicle. The contact stated that while entering the vehicle after it rained, the odor worsened. The contact stated that upon inspecting the vehicle, she lifted the rear driver's side carpet, and noticed that the floorboard on the rear driver's side was soaking wet, and there was mold. The contact used a towel to soak up the water. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
Nov 2023 while driving, car began grinding. Service engine light along with Service Shifter warning appeared. Took to my Independent Mechanic who diagnosed problem as the PTU. There were several complaints, but no official Recall for my VIN. Had PTU replaced. Nov 2024 similar problem except car rolled forward after being placed in Park, and warning lights appeared again. Returned to Independent mechanic who replaced the defective PTU. Still no active Recall for my VIN. Repair completed under warranty. Since repair, Intermittent "Service Shifter" light, but no codes or faults showing. Nov 2025 grinding noise when turning. Independent mechanic diagnosed the Rear Differential and hydraulic pumps to be the problem.

This vehicle has under 90k miles on it. This vehicle has also been maintained by dealerships or certified shops. We are the only owners of the vehicle. We had a “service 4wd” light come on. When we brought it to a dealership for diagnostics it was found that the PTU is failing. Cost for repair from the dealership is 3900. When googling this issue, I found that there were many keeps with the same make and model that were recalled for this exact thing. Please help.
I started the vehicle and a warning came up on the dash stating that I need to service my shifter. All lights on the shifter column are red, and remain red when shifting gears. After shutting off and restarting, the warning and red lights disappear. Recurs randomly.
After the weekend rain, I went to start the 2017 Jeep Cherokee it did not start. I had the battery car jumped and it started up when driving it the steering wheel locked up. The dashboard started to display antilock brake assist off system, power steering assist off system, service transmission restart in Park with vehicle 0 speed, and so many red lights started flashing afterwards. I was in the car with my children a car that was coming behind me had to swerve around me as my car instantly stopped. This could’ve been a horrific or fatal car accident. I just hit my car check to renew my plates the emissions pass and everything safety was good. With this current situation, I would now have to get my car back to the dealership for further inspection, and will be without a car.
I believe the PTU is malfunctioning and causing the transmission to slip or jerk. I am experiencing uncontrolled movement while driving. The vehicle is available at any time for inspection upon request. This puts myself and 2 small children at risk while driving, therefore my ability to use this vehicle is extremely limited and high risk. I have taken it to a jeep dealership in porterville ca who stated my transmission needed replacement. they verbally stated my ptu was ok but never confirmed it with documentation. i have taken it to private mechanics who could not find any issues saying that the problem is internal. the mechanics i have taken it to in the past year have not come to a solution other than to suggest i wait for a resolution to the recall. The service all wheel drive light came on/off about a year ago and was consistant for several months but has turned off for awhile now.
As I was driving all the lights on my [XXX] gear lit up. On my dashboard, it said service shifter. Well, I continued driving. My truck started to slow down a D kept flashing on my dashboard. I had to pull over to the side as the truck was coming to a complete stop. I turned off the ignition waited a few minutes. Turn my truck back on and I was back on the road. I’ve heard lots of complaints in regards to the shifter, but there’s no recall for this. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
My parking brake locked up and no matter what we tried to attempt to unlock the parking brake nothing worked so my vehicle was towed. This problem occurred overnight while it sat in my parking area I did not have the parking brake engaged by me. Later, we discovered from my mechanic this could have occurred on the highway which could have led to a fatal accident. I think there should be a recall on the emergency parking brake module . Our parking brake module was found in water which meant the compartment the module was in was leaking water into the compartment which caused corrosion which led to the locking up of the parking brake.

In the middle of turning into a busy intersection, service shifter light came on and car is shutting off without warning. Shifter lights flash and car dashboard states to put car into gear in order to drive. Took several minutes for car to restart in order to get out of the busy intersection. Huge safety issue could cause a collision while driving for car to shut off without warning. Numerous reports of this on the NHTSA, forums and discussions with no resolution from the manufacturer.
Transmission shifting erratically/service shifter warning displays. Vehicle will lose power at inopportune times due to failure to shift, which could cause a collision, or an accident if on a busy road. Also vehicle will have unwanted acceleration when attempting to come to a stop. This can be dangerous as it may push the vehicle into an intersection after you have attempted to stop. There are various complaints of this issue on various websites and media forums yet no mention of the manufacturer making any attempts to resolve. I have also found the service shifter issue to disable the engine and not allow the vehicle to start which can leave someone stranded.
my 2017 jeep cherokee (vin [XXX] ) has two recalls that are affecting the vhicle. the first is the shifter and harness recall that causes the vehicle to display "service shifter" messages randomly, and all of the shifter lights turn on. the second is the recall effecting how the vehicle shifts. please send me information on how to get these recalls fixed without having to pay a fortune. [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
UNKNOWN Vehicle does not shift into gears correctly and can sometimes have unwanted acceleration or has loss of power at inopportune times.
Shifter lighting up all gears and parking brake initializing while driving. Happened more than 3 times already, two other times happened while at stop sign/light
In the first incident, the engine stalled. Next incident, warning lights on the dash appeared (engine light, traction light, and throttle control) and when pressing on the gas peddle, the car would not respond (would not increase speed). I had to put on flashers to a warn car behind me. Very scary. Bringing in for service ASAP.
Shifter alarm and need to stop the car to reset. Terrible on the highway engine will shut down. Temperature overheating stopped car working.
