NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the 4-WD warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the PTU needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign: 25V011000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,000.
the start stop warning light is on now vehicle was idling when vehicle shut down emergency brake automatically engaged then the panel went blank and the windows the emergency warning lights all stopped working Unable to warn motorists in back of me I couldn’t drive vehicle. Then panel lights up again saying to step on brake to start but fails to do so until after several attempts
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at a slow speed, the vehicle experienced a complete loss of automotive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the contact was advised that the PTU was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (POWER TRAIN) as a possible cause for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 116,000.
1. Vehicle dash lights go out intermittently without warning. 2. Vehicle 4wheel system inoperable at times. Warning lights are present
When driving the Jeep Cherokee (51,000 miles), I experienced numerous incidents where the car experienced sudden power loss climbing a grade followed almost immediately by numerous warning lights and a message that "4WD System Unavailable" as well as a message that the forward warning system had failed. Under these conditions, the car struggled to make even 50 mph and would only do so in a much lower gear at 4000+ rpm. Prior to each incident, the car had been driving smoothly at 70 mph at approx 2200 rpm. Both the Jeep dealer and the local repair obtained the same error code (DTC C14A7-97 PTU Motor Component) indicating internal failure of the PTU (transfer case). When the repair shop removed the transfer case they found metal shavings in the PTU lubricant. With no PTUs available from the Jeep dealership for months it was necessary to purchase a salvaged PTU at near-new pricing. I note that there is a similar recall but it does not cover my vehicle. I also note there are numerous NHTSA complaints for identical problems being filed nearly daily for 2017-2021 Jeeps. This defect is a serious safety issue that can result in complete driveline failure or an inability to maintain speed with traffic. It also results in approx $5000-7000 in repair costs for each PTU replacement.
My service four-wheel-drive light came on when I had the code read. It was obstructed and or blocked the dealership informed me I needed to have a new transfer case and I see all the existing recalls on my exact vehicle and they’re having the same problems and the part that I need for my car is backordered for a long time. I paid for a new transfer case with no time frame as to when they are getting them in
My vehicle was showing signs of problems and has been diagnosed as needing a new PTU and rear differential. These are both well known issues of Recall ID 01C, but my VIN was not included in the recall. I was not aware of the issue and am concerned because this is a definite safety issue.
“Service 4WD” message on the dashboard, vibration, grinding metal sound came from SUV.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle experienced reduced power temporarily, with the messages "4WD Unavailable - Service" and "Service 4WD" being displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the PTU had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
Vehicle cannot stay in 4x4 mode
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while attempting to use the 4WD feature, the message “Service 4WD” was displayed, with an audible chime. The failure caused the vehicle to slide while driving in the snow. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failure. The vehicle was not repaired due to the part not being approved or provided. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 89,773.
PTU Failure, Service 4WD light is on
started squeaking, so we replaced brakes, control arms with bushings, then it started smelling really bad and losing power. When the engine starts, manual shift is not available. Extremely pungent toxic fumes released into the cabin requires recycled air to be on always or the car is not drivable. Oh, and loss of power, like dropping into a low gear when should be in a higher gear. Smell is noxious. Dealer reports Stellantis has not provided parts, updates or any further information. Don't drive much so didn't notice until Government Shutdown ended, I was asked to return to the NSF offices 40 miles from my home. Smell became really evident at that point.
My check engine light comes on and stays on now. I have to put oil on my truck between oil changes. They haven't found any leaks. A diagnostic showed the camshaft as needing fixed at one point but the diagnostic hasn't given any other code problems. I'm having to put in oil frequently but the engine light had remained on. The check engine light will go off sometimes street i hey an oil change but then it comes back on.
While driving, the emergency brake system becomes enabled, which immediately causes the vehicle to stop and sometimes stall. This is so dangerous! My daughter has been in the middle of an intersection when the vehicle has done this, she's lucky she hasn't been struck and killed. We have not taken it to a dealership, however online reports confirm this problem, and that the NHTSA is investigating it. There is a warning light that comes on when this happens, it says BRAKE, and then it gives prompts on what you need to do to disable the emergency brake. This has happened about four times in just this past year (we purchased this vehicle used and have owned it for one year), with the most recent time happening over the weekend. I was reversing the vehicle to move it to another spot in our driveway. I reversed the vehicle, then put it in Drive, and it immediately stopped and flashed BRAKE and enabled the emergency parking brake, although I didn't even touch it! I had to then put my foot on the brake, push the emergency brake button, (I think twice), and then I was able to drive forward.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle jerked abnormally. There was an abnormally loud banging sound while attempting to change gears. The “Service 4WD” warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the power transfer unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the engine sputtered. While driving and attempting to stop the vehicle, the vehicle occasionally lost automotive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the battery, the front and rear brake pads and rotors, the water pump, and the harmonic balancer were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, two days later, there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle while accelerating. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed a second time, and the contact was informed that the PTU was faulty and needed to be replaced, and an alignment was needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also became aware of a coolant leak underneath the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000.
I need my VIN added to the recall list as my vehicle is within the group of affected vehicles, I've been informed by my dealership that this vehicle is at risk of freezing up at any moment due to this condition which is a safety concern. The PTU is an extremely expensive repair.
The contact’s mother owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her mother was driving 35 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stopped in the middle of the road with the 4-WD warning light illuminated. The contact was concerned that the failure could have caused a crash, injury, or even death due to the failure. The contact stated that a Police report was filed with the Police Department of Montville; however, the report was not provided to the driver. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the drivetrain control module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure.
There is a pending recall on this vehicle for the past 8 months. There is still no remedy. My trade-in value has plummeted. I'm experiencing issues related to the PTU recall, and the dealership is telling me there is no known remedy. The vehicle randomly loses drive power / gains drive power. They know the PTU is what is likely wrong with the vehicle, but are refusing to fix the issue, because the recall doesn't have a remedy yet. How long does it take for a manufacturer to find a fix for this? Jeep should be responsible for paying / fixing this recall, yet they aren't because there isn't a remedy.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the “Service FWD” warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that there were chunks of metal floating in the FWD system, and the PTU needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired because parts were on back order. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.
Received an initial letter about the recall in January 2025 -with no resolution offered.. warning light went on in the vehicle on August 24, 2025. Took a vehicle to dealership today, August 25th. Dealer has informed me there is no fix, no timeline on a fix, but told me they cannot release it back to me because it is not drivable. I now have no car a full-time job and no way to get there with no timeline of when this will be resolve.
I was traveling on [XXX] , a major highway from PA to NJ, when my car had a catastrophic explosion, without any warning, while I was driving. The car was running smoothly prior to the explosion. I do not know how I made it to the shoulder because once there I could not move the vehicle. I was on the shoulder and tractor trailers driving 70-80 mph were coming toward me and crossing over the white line into the shoulder. I truly thought I was going to be hit and killed. I had the car towed to my mechanic who informed me that the explosion occurred in the Transfer Case which could have caused a crash injuring myself and other drivers on the highway. My mechanic suggested to have the vehicle towed to a Jeep dealership for further investigation and repairs knowing that Jeep Cherokees from 2017 - 2019 had failed Transfer Cases installed. The dealership has informed me that I am responsible for the parts and labor because the power train warranty ran out and my VIN number is not part of the recall. I have incurred towing expenses, rental car expenses and diagnosis fees and I am still without my vehicle. The quote I was given is for $3400.00 plus tax. This occurrence happened due to no fault of my own. I feel that the recall should be expanded to include my vehicle. There is no loaner care available to me from the dealer and now they cannot get the parts needed until 9/13. This car is low mileage, and this should never have happened. 1. The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) failed, which also caused damage to the transmission and rear drive system. The PTU is part of Recall 25V-011 / Jeep Campaign 01C. The failed components and all related service documentation are available for inspection upon request from Boone Jeep (July 8, 2025) and Randy Marion Jeep (September 10, 2025). No, PTU part was available. 2. While driving on the highway, the vehicle suddenly jerked hard, lost all power, and became inoperable, putting me and other motorists at immediate risk of collision. The vehicle also would not go into Park, creating a rollaway hazard once stopped. These incidents occurred with my grandchildren in the vehicle, making it a severe safety concern. Despite confirming the PTU recall diagnosis, Jeep returned the vehicle to me with no repair available or timeline for a fix, forcing me to continue driving an unsafe vehicle. 3. Yes. Boone Jeep confirmed the PTU failure on July 8, 2025, after diagnosing major jerking, grinding, and loss of power. Later, Randy Marion Jeep also confirmed on September 10, 2025, that the PTU had failed again and that the rear drive and transmission were also damaged due to the same issue. The September 10th one was after I had the transmission replaced. 4. Yes. The vehicle has been inspected by two authorized Jeep dealerships (Boone Jeep and Randy Marion Jeep), acting as manufacturer representatives. Both confirmed the PTU failure and associated damage. No police or insurance inspections have been conducted. 5. Yes, warning light Service 4WD first appeared around springtime this year. This PTU defect has now caused multiple drivetrain failures, including the transmission and rear drive, and continues to pose a serious safety risk. The vehicle remains unsafe to drive, and Jeep has no available remedy for Recall 25V-011 / 01C. Immediate manufacturer action is needed to provide a repair or reimbursement.
During certain temperatures my cars emergency brake light will come on, engine light the abs light all at once and the steering wheel will stiff up this used to happen to my 2004 Jeep grand cherokee now it’s with my new 2019 Jeep Laredo
I have already received the official recall notice, but I have been told by both my local mechanic and FCA representatives that there is still no remedy available. In the meantime, my vehicle is exhibiting exactly the defect described in the recall and is now unsafe to drive. Here is my experience: In early 2024, while running errands, I stopped at a red light before making a left turn. When the light turned green, the car would not move forward. I had to turn on my blinkers while other drivers were honking. I panicked, tried turning the car off and on, and eventually it moved again. This same issue has happened four other times since then. Most recently, on 8/22/25 the car left me stranded in a grocery store parking lot. It was full of groceries, making multiple alert sounds, and would not start. My cousin had to leave what he was doing to try to jump it; when that didn’t work my brother and nephew went to buy a new battery. When they returned, the car started on its own and we returned the battery. We took the vehicle to our local autozone to run tests in which it passed all. Since that day, every time I turn the car on it stalls momentarily before starting. I have also called certified Jeep dealers in my area who have stated the parts are unavailable and there is no ETA on their availability.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the "Service 4WD" message was displayed. While attempting to accelerate after idling, the vehicle hesitated and then surged forward before accelerating. The failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired because parts were on back order for approximately 2-3 months. The contact found information on NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train). The dealer performed a transmission flush, which the contact stated could cause additional issues with the current recall that had not been repaired due to parts not being available. The contact reported an issue with the Warranty Group because the Warranty Group would not cover additional failures under warranty. The contact stated that the transmission failed to shift properly while driving. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 137,000.
AIRBAG SYSTEM MAINTENCE LIGHT CAME ON
I own a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude, VIN [XXX] ], with approximately 77,000 miles. The vehicle’s 4WD transmission/Power Transfer Unit (PTU) has failed and requires replacement. This defect causes loss of 4WD function, reduced drivability, and presents a huge potential safety hazard. The symptoms are identical to those described in NHTSA Recall 25V-011 for 2017–2019 Jeep Cherokees with PTU snap-ring failures, which can result in loss of motive power and rollaway risk. Although my VIN is not currently included, the year, make, model, and defect match the recall population exactly. This failure has significantly devalued my vehicle and created an unsafe condition. I am requesting investigation into why my VIN is excluded and for the recall to be expanded to cover affected vehicles like mine. Rear Differential transfer case on passenger side eroding. O-ring partially exposed.
“4 wheel drive service is unavailable and needs to be serviced” message appeared in my 2019 Jeep Cherokee in August 2025. Wouldn’t stay consistently on, but warning would pop up at least once every time I drove. Warning became more consistent, and in September 2025 I took my car to the dealership for my state inspection, where they investigated this indicator light concern. Diagnosis was “Found obstructed shift fork in PTU, recommend replacing” but the part is currently on back order. I learned that there is a recent recall on 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokees for a PTU issue, however my VIN is not currently included in this recall. I’m concerned that this issue is affecting my jeep since I’m getting a warning and need my PTU replaced, and I’m even more concerned because I can’t get it repaired due to back order.
Rear Differential is cracked and vehicle had 38,569 miles.
Vehicle has a "4WD SVC" light on. I took it to the Jeep Service center to get it diagnosed and it turns out the vehicle will need a PTU (Power transfer unit). I was told that it is not covered under their 01C recall and that i would have to pay for the replacement which is almost $4000. I find it unfair since the vehicle is having the same symptoms stated in that recall and there is a class action lawsuit of this PTU failing since it is a very known issue. This vehicle is very unsafe to drive because it could just shut down on me randomly while driving. This will be the second time this vehicle will need the PTU replaced and i already paid them $400 for diagnosis.
Am concerned about theses vehicles even being on the roadways with no resolution to the safety recall being resolved. Reported in Jan 2025, no resolution yet. for 8 months? "Parts are not available". It appears by documentation that if you are in the states you can get a dealer to check via software to detect and monitor for excessive wear within a PTU. If PTU failure is confirmed by software, FCA US will replace the PTU for all impacted customers experiencing messaging related to the defect to replace the PTU. Warranty extension terms and unlimited years/unlimited mileage. Why can we not check the vehicle out at a Canadian Dealer to confirm what we are potentially driving down our busy highways?
This Jeep suddenly started smoking while driving. Driver immediately pulled over and noticed oil all over on ground. Towed to mechanic and the transfer case has a large crack and the rear differential is bad. Repairs exceeding $4000. Also, on a regular basis the car loses power while driving. Driver has to pull over and restart car. This has not been fixed yet. Not sure what it is. Both issues are known issues for Jeep Cherokees and also this year Jeep. Yet there is no recall for this VIN number. The costs for fixing this and the dangers are unacceptable. Scared about the power loss and not sure what my mechanic will find. This car should be included in the recalls for both issues. I am super disappointed in Jeep. I filed a report with Jeep cares and will also be contacting the attorney general and a consumer attorney. These issues need to be included in the existing recalls for this VIN number. Also, mechanic had to get a refurbished transfer case because there is a backlog of new transfer cases. Clearly this is a big issue.
The rear differential is suffering from corrosion, which caused a slight leak. If it fails, the car will suddenly cease operation, which could result in a collision. The part was inspected by the dealer, and said it could take up to 3 months to get a replacement. As of yet, no warning lights are active.
Transmission is slipping bad, I am told that it is nothing of my doing, but I cannot get it replaced with the powertrain warranty that I have because I was over 1000 miles on my oil change
Since late last year we have experienced intermittent shift slippage when going from just starting out to automatically shifting to next gear. This has happened many times. We never knew about any recall until we took vehicle to dealer ( Manahawkin Jeep ) for another issue with the oil filter housing leaking. The vehicle jerks forward and is not a smooth shift. The problem has not been inspected by the manufacturer or anyone else except the owner. No warnings or messages about issue.
Power Transfer Unit - my power transfer unit has failed. This appears to be a manufacturing defect identical to those under the recall provisions. For some reason, my VIN # is not included.
There has been a safety recall issued since January 16, 2025. Today's date is August 11, 2025. To this date there is still no remedy available. I own two Jeeps with this same recall as part of my business. I am losing close to $3,000 in revenue per month between the two. I'm quickly approaching lost revenue of $21k. Is there a time requirement for manufacturers to address their safety recalls? Seven months is far too long. Thank you.
The car shut off again in the middle of the road, this really needs to be addressed.
Oil pressure light came on the same day the engine sees on freeway
Jeep has issued a recall notice for this make/model on the power train unit. My car is experiencing the exact same issue however my VIN# is not included in the database for this recall. As a result, Jeep is saying that they will not cover the expense of the repair. This is a known issue and my car falls under the guidelines of make, model and year of this recall. Why is this not covered under the standard recall practices?
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? UNKNOWN; believe it may be something with the suspension or possibly the transmission. Their is a chirping sound when making a low speed (15 MPH or so) turn more prominent when making turn up a hill. Sounds can also sometimes be replicated when letting off the accelerator and getting back on it again which is why I believe may be a transmission issue. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? UNKNOWN Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? It has not yet been reported. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? I did have the Service AWD light illuminate a while ago but it shut off when vehicle was restarted.
The power transfer unit (PTU) failed, which is part of Recall 01C. A warning light came on, which prompted me to bring the vehicle to the dealership. The dealership inspected the vehicle, confirmed the PTU had failed, and stated it is unsafe to drive. They also confirmed there is no remedy or replacement part available at this time. Because of this, the vehicle cannot be safely operated and I have been left without transportation.
My 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus is currently inoperable due to a failed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). The local authorized Jeep dealership confirmed that the PTU has failed and that the replacement part is no longer being manufactured or available anywhere in the U.S. This is a well known defect for this type of vehicle. The dealership informed me that there is no repair option at this time and that there is no timeline for when my vehicle may eventually be added to the recall batch list. Stellantis Customer Care has acknowledged the problem but denied my request for a buyback, citing vehicle mileage and age, even though the defect renders the car unsafe and undrivable. The PTU failure can cause a sudden and total loss of power to the wheels while driving, which poses a significant safety risk to the driver and others on the road. Before the complete failure, I noticed grinding noises, steering wheel jerking during acceleration, and the vehicle would not shift gears. The failure was confirmed by the dealer, and the vehicle remains at their facility. I am requesting that Jeep or Stellantis provide a dealer-assisted trade credit (trade assist or goodwill adjustment) to help me transition into a functional vehicle. I continue to make loan payments on a vehicle that cannot be driven or repaired through no fault of my own. This situation leaves me stranded with a financed vehicle that is unsafe, unrepairable, and unsupported by the manufacturer.
The PTU has went out, as confirmed by the dealership. The 4 wheel drive on the vehicle stopped working in August of 2025. The lack of engagement of the 4 wheel drive has left me with little to no traction. The vehicle slips on wet pavement.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000(Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. An unknown dealer was contacted and confirmed that the recall parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
