NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The vehicle is shutting down while driving. Full power down. I have replaced the battery and taken it to Jeep. They have reset and ran multiple diagnostics. The car shows nothing wrong. Each time I call MOPAR about the PTU recall which is causing from 2017-2019 Jeeps to shutdown they say my VIN isn’t listed so they are unable to cover it under the recall. My car is doing exactly what the recall is describing.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 MPH, the 4WD became inoperable and the "4WD Error - Service Soon" message was displayed on the instrument panel. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the Power Transfer Unit needed to be replaced. The contact researched and was made aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
I was driving approximately 30 mph on an exit ramp and as I pressed the gas to accelerate when I got below speed, the drive power completely ceased, started making a noise that I have never heard, almost like a baseball card in a bicycle wheel. The screen flashed a 4WD alert, and then shut off / went completely black. I could not accelerate, I could not turn the wheel at all as it locked up, and once the car finally stopped, I had to keep the break pressed because it would not shift into park. it wouldn't move forward but i was afraid if i let my foot off, it would randomly start again. A truck behind me nearly crashed into the back of my car which would have killed me. I quickly had to pull off to the right in the shoulder as my car came to a dead stop. My car was towed by AAA and brought to the nearest mechanic, as that is the only way they will tow a car. I was told the engine is shot. I have 40,000 miles on my 2019 car. this is completely unacceptable. I know there is a recall for EXACTLY what happened to my car on THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL CAR, but apparently my VIN is not included in the recall. I'm out $13,000 that I owe on this car now and have no options at all financially.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that upon coming to a complete stop, the vehicle suddenly stalled and failed to immediately restart. The vehicle was pushed to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was restarted after several attempts. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The transmission warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) snap ring. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (Power Train); but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,300.

PTU for this car, with no light or warning on the dashboard, car began to make a cranking clicking noise and began to smoke from the rear exhaust, car lost steering capability for the brief moment and fellow driver alerted me that my car was on fire below. Car immediately pulled to the side, i never lost power. at mechanic shop, appears that the PTU blew and oil flew all over the bottom of the car which then ignited causing car fire, appears to have damaged dry shaft, PTU blown into literal pieces and Rear differential all damaged. Car was initially serviced and was told that part was on back order with no signal or conversation that it was unsafe to drive, yet appears that is not the case. other jeeps 2018-2019 have a similar recall on PTUs and i dont know why this model does not
On multiple occasions the check engine/service fwd drive light would come on, my car would shake as I accelerated. Also when I would come to stop it would shake as well. I took my vehicle to NTB and Pep Boys multiple times over the years and recently took it to Dodge/Jeep dealership where they replaced PTU
When driving to work a popping/clunking sound was noticed from under the vehicle. Coasted to a stop, Jeep wouldn't move when in drive like there was no power. No service lights came on. Stuck on the side of the road with cars driving by. Since the Jeep wouldn't move it was difficult to ensure I was completely off the road. Called AAA, towed Jeep to repair shop where a catastrophic failure of the rear differential and transfer case was noted. We were in the process of trading the Jeep in due to multiple issues noted during the last service inspection, including corrosion near snap ring of rear differential.
PTU is malfunctioning and cause my 4 wheel drive to no longer operate and it’s an all wheel drive vehicle. Dash light has “service 4 wheel drive” and error message states not available. There is a safety recall for a pin that could cause damage to the PTU and there is no solution from the manufacturer on this 6 yr old vehicle.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, there was a mechanical clunking sound coming from the rear of the vehicle, and the 4WD failed to engage as needed. The message "Service 4WD" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the PTU needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V011000 (POWER TRAIN). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 59,000.
My vehicle yesterday indicated a warning light on the dashboard SVC 4WD. I see there is a recall for this issue which covers my year but when I enter my VIN number it indicates there are no recalls associated with it.
My panoramic sunroof just shattered without reason.i wasn't close enough to any vehicle for a rock or debris to be the issue I was driving a steady speed on the freeway when it happen. The glass that broke seemed to have broke outward not inward.
Started car prior to leaving house. When entering car, placed car into run mode. Released parking brake and placed into drive. Service 4WD light came on with. When pulling out of driveway, I made a left turn which the car made a clunk noise in the front end. When driving a little further I topped the hill only doing about 15 mph. Once accelerating down the hill the car shifted and made a loud grinding noise. This prevented the car from traveling any faster. This also resulted in a needed emergency pull over on back road with no shoulder. Car was then parked, turned off for about 2 minutes in traffic. At that point car was restarted with no Service light. I began to accelerate and noise went away. Further driving brought light back on and off but no noise at this time. I have a concern this could happen at highway speeds resulting in a unessarcery car accident. There seems to be a high fail rate with these cars and the PTU. I would highly recommend extending the safety recall to all Jeeps with this brand PTU.

The svc 4wd light stays on and the power transfer unit makes a horrible noise. It is the same symptoms as the recall of the 2017-2019s, but somehow, my car does not fall under the recall. The car only has 52521 miles on it and is treated very well. There is no reason that this should have broke.

While driving the vehicle, I heard a loud clunk, and it continued as I drove. Luckily, I was driving in town. I had to slow down and took the vehicle straight home and then took it to the dealership when I could get an appointment. The dealership examined the vehicle and determined the noise was coming from the transfer case and internal gear failure. I was told it was not drivable until this was fixed. There were no warning identifiers before this happened.
While driving the Cherokee the vehicle shut down. No check engine or warning lights come on.
Was driving on the highway when the parking break randomly engaged. This happened twice in 1 day and was followed by the alert "4WD System Unavailable Service Required" on dash. Took to dealership and was told its the "PTU" and the part is on a 6month backorder. My vin is not part of the recall and was told this is a very common problem with Jeep and just to keep driving it considering they cannot get the part anyways. The cost to fix it will be around $4,000 when the part does come in

I have asked the dealer many times why my 19 doesn't have the recalls for thus like the 18 and 20 do. They have no answers. I

They issued a recall 6+ months ago. They still don’t have the part to repair it - they claim verbally at the dealership and via phone @ Mopar that there’s no risk but that’s not what the recall notice says. The recall notice says that I could lose control of the vehicle while driving or that there could risk of a fire, fluid leakage, loss of parking capability. My wife and kids use this car and I don’t appreciate the risk they are taking with my family’s life.
Oil filter housing; sensors; gasket; coolant temp sensor . Wheel sensor set too low and NOT what is recommended for wheel safety.

While driving the car, the shifting mechanisms are not working correctly. Stalling, hard shift etc. Causing jolts, and sudden stop/start movements. I was driving in the snow when my car jolted and was unable to stop on the ice leaving me in the snow bank. Went to put it in 4wd and the 4wd wouldn’t work. Brought it to the dealer repair shop where the recall was determined as the culprit. I have waited a year for the recall with no news, updates and being unable to drive my car.

My jeep acts like it wants to always stall which is part of the recent recall lose of power to the power transfer unit b could become damage band stall . Had to have the PTU replaced in May of 2023 due to the sv 4wd light that came on. Now fast forward to January of 2025 I needed to replace the rear differential. Also new tires once again! Correlation? Who knows. I keep hearing from dealerships I’ve dealt with this is a common issue for the 2019 Jeep Cherokees. I’m hoping enough customers put in complaints so we can get compensated. It makes me want to tell everyone to avoid purchasing Jeeps. ( At least 2019) This has been expensive and frustrating and worrisome about my family and I safety. I do have pictures upon request from the dealership(s) that have worked on my vehicle.
4×4 temporary unavailable service required. Light has been on since I bought it on November told dealer , and this is connected to my stability control andy rear all over road it acts like it wants to stall and I already went on to ditch 4 days ago due to ice and snow and not being Able control car fully
