NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2008 Jeep Commander. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Driving down the interstate with all windows on Jeep Commander closed. With no fore warning the sunroof flew off. This poses a serious safety risk to the individual driver and others on the road. My scenario another driver’s vehicle was struck by said glass.
Traction control kicks in and the gas peddle doesn't work properly. Won't accelerate and just slows down. 20-30 seconds later and it kicks back off. Happened 3-4 times. No problems up until incident. Does have the tire pressure light on as well.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Commander. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the clockspring assembly. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V290000 (Air Bags), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 140,000.
Codes U1403 and U1411. Driving down highway all gages stopped working, air conditioning stopped working, abs light going off, locks won’t operate, windows won’t open or close, rear door remained locked couldn’t get my child out of the car due to the rear door remaining locked. Technician unable to locate source of the problem. Jeep dealer has 1 month wait. Put my family at risk as it was 110 degree day. When it all occurred could smell electrical burning smell.
2008 Jeep Commander, 4.7L, QDII system. Vehicle experiences a sudden an unexpected loss of power and braking action while driving at speed. After loss of power, ABS, Stability Control, Brake, Check engine light, dash board warning lights illuminate and flash. Park assist and service 4wd error messages flash intermittently. Vehicle begins to buck and surge, accelerator becomes unresponsive. Has occurred at highway speed of 70mph, 50mph, 35mph. Loss of control of vehicle is sudden an unexpected with no advance warning. Vehicle has been to my local jeep dealer 4 times for repair (in under 1000 miles) multiple components replaced with no correction to issue.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle the ABS, Traction Control, Check Engine, and ESP BAS warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, on some occasions while driving approximately 65 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from underneath the driver's seat, causing the seat to vibrate. The contact stated that she also observed oil under the oil filter when she inspected the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted but the warning lights remained illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,948.
The sunroof on my 2008 Jeep Commander leaks profusely, even in mundane conditions like a rain sprinkle or carwash. Throughout the year, whenever there is a rain downpour, water leaks through the sunroof and side posts to the point that water is sloshing and splashing around as I drive, and splashes up on me when I stop. Through online research, I've learned that Chrysler refuses to address and correct the faulty drainage tubes causing the leaky sunroofs, nor does Chrysler honor warranty claims for these sunroofs despite issuing at least 7 Technical Service Bulletins about its vehicles’ faulty drainage tubes and leaking sunroofs between 1999 and 2010, the class action lawsuit says. I am now having to spend hundreds, if not thousands, to have the sunroof and side post drainage channels repaired. Thousands of other Jeep owners have had this same issue. I implore you to please hold Jeep/Chrysler accountable, and force them to rectify this faulty, defective, and poorly manufactured product that they call a "sunroof", which is actually just an open portal for water to soak us both literally and monetarily. Because of recent hail storms locally, no repair shop is even able to look at my Jeep's sunroof until November. So that means I'll have to continue arriving to work and other destinations soaking wet. Looking forward to your response and action on this matter. ENGINE STALLING WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING/CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS BETWEEN 55MPH TO 65MPH
The WIN module malfunctioned not allowing my vehicle to restart after stalling on the interstate. Since then, I have not been able to start my vehicle. Apparently there’s a recall on this exact same win module for the exact same year make and model of my vehicle but yet I was informed that my vin wasn’t qualified under the recall for some reason.
The truck shuts down and loses all electrical most usually when slowing down for a light or coming to a stop. Most times except for one it turns back on right away. We have had numerous fixes and yet it still keeps happening. This is apparently a common keep commander issue. I am scared to travel with my kids in it.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Commander. The contact stated while driving in a parking lot, she was informed that there was a metal part hanging underneath the rear subframe of the vehicle. The contact drove to her residence, where she noticed the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the gas tank support had detached and needed to be replaced; however, the part was not available. An unknown dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the part was not available. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
I was in the freeway going 68-70 mph with my wife and kids where a red lightning ? Appears on the upper right corner, vehicle steering locked and tuned off while cars were coming. I was able to turn vehicle back on and move to the right of the freeway. Turns out it has a recall on it. I took it to Browning Dodge in Norca Ca. They say they fixed my recall I picked up my Jeep , it drove ok for a few days and it started doing the same malfunction. They said they are unable to work on my vehicle due to throttle body that was replaced by a professional mechanic.
MY VEHICLE JUST QUITS WHEN I AM DRIVING . NO POWER AND THE ENGINE JUST SHUTS OFF. OUR MECHANIC HAS SUGGESTED THERE HAS BEEN RECALL ON 2008 JEEP COMMANDERS. BUT WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP WERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THEY INFORMED US OUR VEHICLE IS NOT ON THE LIST.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Commander. The contact stated while at a standstill, the vehicle stalled randomly and was unable to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic where it was not diagnosed. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V200000 (Electrical System) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that they were unable to assist. The failure mileage was approximately 240,000.
Woke up and it wouldn’t crank, been driving it every day, Ignition module front control module May be bad like stated in the recall, won’t turn over or crank, transmission input output sensors idk maybe transmission module, wouldn’t go over 40 I’m wondering if my Jeep has problems like stated in the recall. Technicians at James Ceranti Chrysler dodge Jeep says it’s electrical
The Vehicle will completely shut down (stall) randomly while driving in motion. This happens randomly but consistently. This has happened while driving on highways in speeds of excess of 55mph and on other roads going as slow as 10mph or while in reverse. When this happens, the oil light and Check engine light come on and the vehicle locks up with no power steering. The vehicle will start back up again after a few seconds when you turning the key.
Electrical System is failing. Began with the Electrical sunroof will not open/OR slide all the way open, the sunroof Electrical problem has been this way since I purchased it in 04/2019. Next the touchscreen panel for the radio AM/FM, will shit off while driving down the road randomly and sporadically. CD Player quit working indefinitely, i cant even get my CD out of the CD player. Will not play any CD or radio if cd player is attempted to be activated. Airbag warning light is showing on dash 24/7, however, vehicle has never been wreaked. No airbag been deployed. Vehicle has NEVER been in a wreak. caused injury due to rough and rugged suspension and while driving the vehicle throws passengers and driver. Has been Serviced & checked. has failed to start 23 times in a row. checked alternator, starter, ect. 7-10 minutes of attempting to start without luck. professional mech. claimed its the electrical system; pro mechanic fixed problem. Problem persists with Electrical system has caused the gears to slip while cruise control is actively in use and if going up a hill rpm's will sky rocket from 1 to 6 in a heartbeat. JEEP COMMANDER is a v6 but drives as a 4 cylinder. Driving on Highway is dangerous when Electrical system breaks down without warning. This has scared my fiance and I several times for fear of our lives. Suspension and shocks do not work well, as the slightest bump is rough and rugged throwing passengers & driver around. All these defects never occurred until 2021. Electrical system is the most important component of the vehicles makeup it makes everything run smoothly and every single day i have electrical system problems that effects my safety and anyone in my 08 jeep commander. This is a manufacturer problem, i know this because a professional mechanic informed me of this and asked me to request a recall on my vehicle. Please help to correct these issues for the safety of all those on the road. Thank you for your time and consideration. God Bless
Front and shutters and feels like it may vibrate of the road. Also the trans slips into neutral.
THIS VEHICLE WON'T START AND I GUESS IT HAS A STARTER PROBLEM. THAT HAPPENING ALL THE THE TIME.*DT
The jeep randomly stutters, surges, and dies at the light. The brake light comes on and off and the brakes also feel like they stutter and/or shake when pressing on the pedal break.
ON A 2 LANE ROAD AT A SPEED OF 25 TO 30 MPH, THE 2008 JEEP COMMANDER QUIT ACCELERATING WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WAS PUSHED. IT RESPONDED AS IF IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. RPM'S REVED UP HIGH WITH NO ACCELERATION. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND THEN BACK ON IT CONTINUED TO DO THE SAME THING. INTERMITTENTLY.
YOU WILL BE GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE CAR WILL STALL ON YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. NO WARNING.
RECALL P57 WAS NEVER FULFILLED ON MY VEHICLE. I FILLED OUT THE RECALL CARD AND MAILED IT BUT NEVER HEARD ANYTHING AND MY VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE HAVING ISSUES FROM WHAT THIS RECALL ENTAILED. PLEASE ADVISE HOW I CAN GET THIS RECALL FIXED ON MY VEHICLE. I'VE HAD OFF AND ON ISSUES WITH IT AT STARTING AND HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP WITH NO TRUE RESOLUTION AND SUNDAY 10/25 IT STARTED AGAIN. THANKS, ANGIE

HAVING AN ELECTRICAL SWITCH ISSUE WITH MY JEEP. THE KEY LOCKS IN THE IGNITION AND THE CAR WILL NOT START. ALSO THE AIRBAG SIGN SAYS SOMETHING IS WRONG.
MY COMMANDER WILL SIMPLY SHUT OFF WHILE AT SPEEDS AND OR IDLING...VERY SCARY VARY DANGEROUS. SOMETIMES IT WILL START RIGHT BACK UP, BUT MOST WONT START AT ALL. I HAVE HAD TO TOW IT AWAY. LUCKILY I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MANAGE SHUT OFFS ...BUT I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN THIS VEHICLE ANYMORE. DON'T WANT TO PUT KIDS IN WITH ME OR TOW ANYTHING OR EVEN JUST DRIVE IT. THERE ARE NO CODES, OR EXPLANATION TO IT FROM MY MECHANIC...MYSTERY. IT'S CURRENTLY NOT STARTING NOW AND KIND OF DONE WITH THIS ISSUE. CHRYSLER...THIS NEEDS A FIX BADLY! *TR

THE RECALL (N23 NHTSA 13V 225) PER SHANEPUA, OF CHRYSLER, THAT IS NOW CAUSING MAJOR PROBLEMS ON MY VEHICLE WAS NOT TASKED TO MY SPECIFIC VEHICLE AND THEY WON'T HONOR THE RECALL. THE OTHER 2 RECALLS WERE POORLY DONE IN FEB 2020 AND IS NOW AGAIN CAUSING PROBLEMS.
THE POWER LOCKS MAKE A HORRIBLE NOISE I I BELIEVE IT IS THE ACTIVATOR
THE VEHICLE DOOR LOCKS MAKE S LOUD BUZZING NOISE. I BELIEVE ITS THE ACTIVATOR. THIS WAS NOTICED RECENTLY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP COMMANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO LIMP MODE AND FAILED TO RESPOND WHILE DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. DRIVERS STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG DEPLOYED WITHOUT REASON WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO IMPACT OR REASON FOR DEPLOYMENT. JUST A SIMPLE INVOLUNTARY DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAG WHILE TURNING OFF A CITY STREET INTO A PARKING LOT. IT COULD HAVE KILLED ME - OR WORSE, I COULD HAVE HIT AND KILLED A PEDESTRIAN IN A BUSY LOT.*DT *DT *DT CONSUMER STATED MY NAME IS [XXX], I AM [XXX] FATHER. MY JEEP COMMANDER HAS HAD 3 DIFFERENT MECHANICAL DIAGNOSTICS TO DIAGNOSE WHY THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF CONTINUALLY WHILE IN MOTION OR STOPPED. THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS RECENTLY REPLACED AS A PART OF A RECALL AND THIS HAS NOT SOLVED THE ISSUE EITHER. THE JEEP WILL RANDOMLY SHUT OFF, AND ALL POWER STEERING IS LOSS, CAUSING A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION UNTIL IT CAN BE PUT INTO PARK OR NEUTRAL AND TURN BACK ON. MY LAST DIAGNOSTIC SHOWED THE AUTO REPAIR SHOPPED A COMPUTER READ OF 'RUNNING' WHILE THE TRUCK HAD TURNED OFF SEVERAL TIMES RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. I HAVE SPENT A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY ON DIAGNOSTICS AND NO MECHANIC HAS BEEN ABLE TO FIND AN ANSWER EVEN AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED AS PART OF AN ORIGINAL RECALL. I WAS TOLD BY ALL THREE AUTO REPAIR SHOPS THAT THEY KNOW THERE IS A STALLING/SHUT OFF ISSUE BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO FIX IT BECAUSE THERE IS NO INDICATOR OF WHY THROUGH THOROUGH DIAGNOSTICS. THEY ALSO NOTED THAT WHEN THE JEEP SHUTS OFF THE DASH LIGHTS DO NOT TURN ON AS IT WOULD NORMALLY WHEN A VEHICLE SHUTS OFF. WHEN THE JEEP HAS SHUT OFF ON ME DRIVING DOWN A MAJOR ROAD AT 40 MILES PER HOUR MY ONLY INDICATOR THAT MY VEHICLE HAS SHUT OFF IS THAT MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AS THE JEEP BEGINS TO SLOW DOWN. THE NEW IGNITION SWITCH HAS NOT REMEDIED THE SHUT OFF ISSUE AND NO MECHANICAL SHOP HAS BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE AND OTHER REASON WHY. ESSENTIALLY MY JEEP COMMANDER IS VERY UNSAFE WITH NO SOLUTION ABLE TO FOUND. I RESEARCHED FURTHER AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A FRONT CONTROL MODULE RECALL ON SOME 2008 JEEP COMMANDERS ISSUED. I BELIEVE MY JEEP COMMANDER'S VIN MAY NEED TO BE ADDED TO THIS RECALL FOR THIS MAKE AND MODEL BECAUSE THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL HAS NOT FIXED THE ISSUE AND NO MECHANICAL DIAGNOSTIC HAS BEEN ABLE TO ANSWER WHY. EVERYTHING ELSE IS COMPLETELY SOUND WITH THE JEEP COMMANDER EXCEPT THIS ISSUE OF SHUTTING OFF WHILE ON, IN MOTION OR PARKED.
ABS BRAKE SLIP CONTROL LIGHTS STAY ON
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP COMMANDER. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE PIN, VALVE, AND ENGINE DETACHED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT ALSO CALLED A REPAIR SHOP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 162,000.
WATER LEAKING FROM SUNROOF , WEATHER LINING PEELING OFF MOST OF CAR
The Electrical System has failed. The center sound system shuts off and reboots on its own every hour or 2 causing electronic failure and has proven to get worse over time. Following that the Jeep will randomly not start, mechanics have told me that it must be the Electrical System because it is not starter, alternator or the battery. Failure to start engine has occurred over 20 times...effecting my ability to drive to work a few times. Power Train has failure has caused electronic control, software, shift lever/gear control and indicator devices, torque, drive axles, hubs, shafts, CV joints, housings and related safety systems to fail/stop working while in drive; example the Jeep was driving 50 miles an hour and transmission gears shut down and i tried shifting into neutral attempt to start transmission/engine failure. All transmission gears shut off. Then after 5 minutes came back on and started working again while driving down a country highway , luckily no other vehicles passed during this incident. This scared me and the passenger in fear of wreaking from lack of control of the vehicle. This has happened 2 times. Having severe problems with gear shifting or transmission failure. Has presented a safety hazard. The speed control fluctuates when driving up a hill or vehicle stalling while driving at 50 mph and must let off the accelerater in order to get vehicle back into correct gear. Vehicle has been inspected by mechanic by using diagnostic tests and each time they cannot find anything wrong with the transmission or engine...only Electrical System which makes sense because the Jeep is a smart car and professionals have informed me to take the jeep to the manufacturer inorder to fix the Electrical Systems malfunctions. there were no messages/warnings prior to each failure which began in the spring of 2021. Except the radio/center electronic consol which failure of the screen, DVD/Video, & radio transmissions that shut down and reboot every 2 hours started 2019.
JEEP WILL NOT START. IT DISPLAYS TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP FOR A SPLIT SECOND AS YOU TURN ON THE KEY. THE JEEP SAT OVERNIGHT IN THE DRIVEWAY BEFORE TRYING TO START IT THE NEXT MORNING, AND IT DID NOT START.
I WAS DRIVING MY SON TO HOCKEY AND THERE WAS TRAFFIC STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME I WENT TO HIT THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WAS HARD I KEPT STOMPING ON THE PEDAL AND NOTHING I ENDED UP REAR ENDING ANOTHER VEHICLE MY JEEP WAS OFF AFTER THE CRASH AND I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT, I THOUGHT I WAS LOSING MY MIND THAT MAYBE MY SANDAL GOT STUCK BUT THE MORE I THOUGHT ABOUT IT THE MORE AND MORE I REALIZED I DID STOMP ON MY PEDAL MY 17 YEAR OLD SON WAS WITH ME AND HE TOLD ME AT ONE POINT I LITERALLY SAT UP TRYING TO PUSH ON THE PEDAL I'M AGGRAVATED AND STRESSED ABOUT THE ENTIRE THING SO I DECIDED TO LOOK FOR RECALLS TRYING TO EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED AND CAME ACROSS A INCOMPLETE RECALL, I SWEAR ON MY 3 KIDS I STOMPED ON THAT PEDAL AND WASN'T LOSING MY MIND NOTHING MADE SENSE SO MY JEEP IS PRETTY MUCH TOTALED, I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO I DON'T WANT THIS TO FALL BACK ON ME WHICH IT ALREADY HAS
WHEN DRIVING THE JEEP COMMANDER WILL SUDDENLY SHUT OFF WITH NOW STEERING OR BRAKING POWER
POSSIBLE TAKATA RECALL. - AIRBAGS WILL NOT INFLATE - CAR NEEDS A 'CLOCK SPRAY SENSOR'
I BOUGHT MY VEHICLE AT A NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND DIDN'T KNOW THAT IT LEAKED INTO THE CABIN ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE FOOT WELL BECAUSE OF THE DRAIN TUBES FOR THE SUNROOF. I TOOK IT IN THEY SAID IT WAS FIXED BUT THE VERY NEXT TIME IT RAINED IT WAS SOAKED AGAIN AND BY THEN I FOUND OUT WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON WITH THE VEHICLE. IT'S NOT THAT I DON'T WANT TO BE A GOOD CONSUMER AND NOT MAKE ANY WAVES, BUT I DON'T WANT TO KEEP PAYING FOR A LEAKING VEHICLE, AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. WHAT HAPPENS IF I GO TO STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND SLIP AND FALL, I HAVE FEET ANKLE PROBLEMS AS IT IS AND IT'S DETRIMENTAL TO MY HEALTH SHOULD THAT HAPPEN.
TAMARA RECALL THE JEEP WILL CUT OFF RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. IT WILL ALSO MAKE ATTEMPTS TO CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AT 60 MPH AND BELOW. THE ESP LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WILL COME ON. ONCE ABLE TO GET THE JEEP STOPPED WITH OUT GETTING IN AN ACCIDENT IT WILL RESTART AND ALL LIGHTS WILL GO OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED NOW 3 TIMES WITH IN 4 DAYS WITH IT CUTTING COMPLETELY OFF AND 5 TIMES TRYING TO WHILE DRIVING. THE 1ST TIME IT WAS ON A HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 50 MILES AND HOUR. THE 2ND TIME I WAS GETTING OFF THE INTERSTATE WHILE GOING AROUND A CURVE GOING ABOUT 30 MILES AN HR. THE 3RD TIME I WAS DOING 35 MILES AN HR ON A BUSY STREET. THE TIMES THAT IT HAS ATTEMPTED TO SHUT OFF BUT DIDN'T I WAS GOING BETWEEN 45 AND 60 MILES AN HR. THIS IS UNSAFE FOR ANYONE TO BE DRIVING AND HAVE HAPPEN. IT CAN CAUSE ME TO HAVE ACCIDENT AND OR TO CAUSE A ACCIDENT. THIS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HARM AND LOSS OF LIFE. I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS THE IGNITION SWITCH OR AN ISSUE WITH THE MOTOR OR WIRING. SOMETHING IS WRONG. I SEE ON OTHER FORUMS THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS ISSUE. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP THAT I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS JEEP FROM I AM SCARED TO DRIVE IT. I AM IN FEAR FOR MYSELF AND KIDS AND OTHERS.
VEHICLE DROPS FROM 70 MPH TO 30 MPH UNEXPECTEDLY AND FREQUENTLY. UNABLE TO GET OUT OF FIRST GEAR. ADDING 1 QUART TRANSMISSION FLUID LASTS FOR A FEW DAYS. NO LEAKS SEEN BY 3 MECHANICS
FUEL TANK WHERE FILLER HOSE CONNECTS HAS STARTED TO LEAK WHEN I FILL TANK. ALSO EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS ARE MADE SO SMALL AND WEAK THAT THEY BRAKE AND DEALER KEEPS TELLING CUSTOMERS THAT ENGINE NOISE OF KNOCKING IS NORMAL ON COMMANDER.
TRANFERCASE SHIFTED INTO NUETRAL WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY THEN BACK TO DRIVE JERKING THE GEARS AND GEARS ARE NOW POPPING WHILE ACCELERATING.
