NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Jeep Gladiator. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The visor on the driver's side, while driving and moving from the front position to the side to cover the driver's side window, fell out and was hanging over the steering wheel while again driving. It was very startling while driving and could have led to an accident due to blocking the driver vision while dangling. As I was unable to pull over, I was able to push it back into the left side frame and lock it back into the right side visor holder all while still having to drive. I had the visor fixed under original warranty. Just last week, the same thing happened on the passenger side. Since I was out of initial warranty and although I have extended warranty, I searched the problem to see if there was an online solution. Apparently, it is a known issue with the Jeep and while I was picking up my vehicle from the second repair of the same type issue, another Jeep was being processed in for the same visor repair. The repair was completed at Community Motors, LLC, 500 Westin Oaks Dr., Hammond, La. 70403. Phone: 985-345-0401 Although nothing happened to me, the fact that the initial visor broke while in the process of driving on the interstate and startled me and impeded my vision, an accident could have occurred.
Local dealer has told me there is no known repair. My vehicle is in my driveway and has been undriveable for six months.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated that the instrument panel failed to illuminate or display the mileage, fuel level, and other information necessary to the operation of the vehicle. The contact stated that when the sun visor was down to block the sun and the vehicle was driven over uneven pavement, the sun visor occasionally slightly detached and blocked the view of the driver. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the instrument panel needed to be replaced. The dealer confirmed that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V652000 (Electrical System); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated that on three occasions while driving approximately 50 MPH, the vehicle drove over a patch in the roadway, and the front end began shaking uncontrollably. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road where the vehicle remained until the vehicle stopped shaking. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering damper needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 48,500.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V116000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the clutch felt loose intermittently. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
My entire Electrical system failed, the engine wouldnt start , the warning flashers would not work, the vehicle wouldnt go into neutral to be pushed. So I was blocking an intersection for about 2 hrs waiting on a tow truck to tow it to the nearest dealership. The dealership was unable to reproduce the problem just wants to replace the end result of a 150 amp fuse block blown at $400 for a $50 part. I attached what was actually going on with the vehicle in PDF format I researched on Gladiator forum and Jeep Garage forums and found this is a problem for many jeep models with the dual battery system but nobody had an answer as to why it happens other than something shorted out.
The steering wheel begins to vibrate uncontrollably at highway speeds to the point where other drivers notice the shaking in the front end. to correct this problem i have to slow down well below highway speeds to get the steering under control. No the problem has not been reproduced by a dealer and now the vehicle is out of warranty. No indicators lights or warning signs appear when this issue arises.
My Jeep Gladiator has had the "death wobbles" three different times now. It has been "repaired" by Jeep only to have the issue return a month or two later. The 2nd repair was done more extensively than just a dampener replacement. There is a class action lawsuit on this issue. But the new repair does not solve the problem! My truck has never been modified. It is original.
There are no warning signals and its been an issue since purchase. The steering has a lot of play and the truck will pull one way or the other. This causes extreme episodes of swerving even at speeds of 30. The front and rear were replaced with initial recall or TSB.
While driving several warnings lights illuminate: traction control, ABS, air bad, service 4 wd, and brake. When this happens power steering is lost making it extremely hard to steer the car. The brakes are automatically engaged and occasionally the windshield wiper turns on. This causes a risk not only to myself and passengers but anyone driving near me as I can no longer steer with ease and the brakes lock up. My Gladiator has been at the Jeep dealer for 10 weeks while they try to solve the problem. They replaced the ABS module but that didn't solve the issue. I'm told that its electrical and whatever it is will harm several systems. My wife's 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL has the exact same issues. She has a very hard time controlling it due to no power steering.
Lost Power Steering, 5/22/2023. 4 Orange Check lights came on. 1)Tried to start the car remotely, with secondary key. No start. 2)Tried again standing next to it. No start. 3)Got in and pushed brake and started car. All the same check lights came on that did 4/19. Engine, ABS and 4WD. Maybe another Shifter warning. 4)Pulled out of driveway with ½ the error lights on. Lost power steering 100 yards in the neighborhood. 5)U Turn with no PS, back to house, let it sit all day till 3PM while waiting for towing. Did not scan, Did not disconnect battery. 3PM, Came home from work, started the car with remote. Only 1 check engine light and now power steering is back. Delivered to Jeep Dealer, Hetrick Jeep Dodge, Elton, MD. by tow truck.
Began driving vehicle on short 4.5 mile trip to the store with over 1/4 tank of fuel. Began to smell of fuel inside and noticed that when accelerating from a stop vehicle would hesitate and stutter. Halfway through trip noticed that vehicle had only 1/8 tank of fuel left and light came on. Pulled into parking lot at destination, shut vehicle off near empty and noticed trail of gasoline behind vehicle and pooling fuel below. Observed underneath that fuel had been spraying at a high pressure from the top of the fuel tank ( exact source not visible) all over the underside and all over the exhaust system, pooling in the skid plates and all cavities underneath. Vehicle would not restart for tow operator.
4/21. Check Engine Light Shifter locked in place. Lost Power Steering. Started out as CHECK ENGINE Light then added ABS light. I Cleared it. Week later, Friday, 4/21. Check Engine Light 4/22 - Saturday AM, Drive to Goodwill and landfill While in 18 truck line at landfill, I put in PARK, Trans locked itself in PARK. Radio and Speedo Blipped. Then Orange Check Engine light, Orange ABS light, two Orange Traction Control lights. Orange Service 4WD light. Service Shifter Message, RED Brake light n dash. There was another ABS Message, but I failed to get it. Turned off engine, I restarted and was able to get in gear, NO POWEER STEERING. Got through line. Drove home with all check lights and no power steering. Engine and Trans Temps were good, oil pressure was good, Battery showing 14.1 while driving. At home, scanned for codes. The car is wandering and there is no control over the steering. It feels as if the car is all over the place meaning I have to correct the steering constantly.
I was driving at about 5 MPH and about to go onto the Freeway on ramp in Riverside, California, when the sensor in my car went off and locked the brakes, causing the person behind me to rear-end me. This is not the first time this has happened with this vehicle. Luckily, I was not injured, however, this could have been a serious injury if I was traveling at a higher speed or under many other circumstances.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle drove over a pothole and the steering wheel started to shake violently and vehicle swayed from side to side before regaining control. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the front dampers. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. Upon further diagnosis, the dealer replaced the power steering gearbox. The failure reoccurred a third time, and the dealer replaced the front dampers and advised the contact that the failure had caused abnormal wear on tire tread and advised the contact that the tires be replaced. The failure reoccurred a fourth time however, the vehicle had not yet been diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened, pending an inspection by a Jeep specialist. The failure mileage was 34,934. The dealership service guy stated it was considered to be a death wobble and that Jeep has known about this issue for quite some time now.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V116000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The factory sunroof on my 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon detached at highway speeds. The springs that hold tension on the clamps that secure the soft top to the frame, unbeknownst to me at the time, lost tension. While travelling down the highway the soft top clamps loosened from a small bump and the wind caught the soft top itself. I immediately reacted, reached up, and tried to bring the soft top back down as I was frantically slowing down on the highway and merging right. The soft top ripped from my hand cutting it open and smashed into the rear of the vehicle. When the soft top smashed into the rear of the vehicle several hinges broke, luckily one was still holding the soft top from completely falling off. This obviously poses a very large safety risk as the soft top could have flown into another vehicle disabling it or much worse; causing injury or death. The problem has been reported by others through online forums and the consensus is that the springs inside the clamps weaken over time leading to this issue. The soft top was not inspected by the dealer or anyone else, they did not care to investigate. The dealer only replaced the soft top after more than a month of waiting for parts to arrive. I have informed Jeep Cares and Jeep Customer Care over the phone; however, they did not seem interested in actually fixing the issue. Jeep instead directed me the dealership only to have the soft top replaced. I am now following up with NHTSA regarding this issue as the other avenues have yielded no results. It should be noted that in my forum post I ended up paying more than the $500 deductible, there was constant confusion between the dealership and insurance, the invoice is attached. On Wednesday, March 9, 2023, my wife pulled down the passenger visor to put on make-up and noticed the part of the visor that pivots dropped out of its socket and the visor was just drooping down at that point. She had to push that visor part back into the socket to get it to stay somewhat. Now, every time she pulls down the visor it does the same thing. I've seen on this website (NHTSA) and the Gladiator Forum that this is a known and widespread safety issue that apparently Jeep has not decided to announce a recall on. When I went in for an oil change and tire rotation today, Thursday, March 10, 2023 at the David Stanley Dodge/Jeep dealership in Midwest City, OK and advised them of the problem with the visor, they stated I was out of warranty and that they could order me one for $330 with tax parts/labor. According to what I've read about the problems with the visors, perhaps a replacement for two visors would be in order, but that would cost $660. I advised the dealership that I didn't feel like I should have to pay for a replacement if the visor issue is a known defect. The dealership advised me that I could call the Jeep Help Line.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the clutch was slipping. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact previously received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V116000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the failure was related to the recall. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 38,700. VIN tool confirms parts not available. The contact stated the clutch totally failed on 07/12/23. The contact stated there are no parts available to perform the recall.
The clutch has been slipping for a while. Over the last week the situation has become worse. Today the slippage resulted in failing to accelerate ended up in a stall while on the on ramp on a highway and narrowly escaped being rear ended by an 18 wheeler which barely managed to stop 2 feet behind. The clutch on this vehicle has been deffective since I bought it (I have driven a manual truck for 20 years and never had problems). FCA has issued a recall (software update for fire hazard) which has been completed on this vehicle but in my opinion fire is not the only danger for this defective clutch. Clutch slippage and stalling is also a hazard. When this incident happened, and tried to get more information I realized there is a second recall for the same exact issue which the "software update" was supposed to fix. When the incident happened earlier today, the clutch was extremely hot and while it did not catch fire it slipped and put me in a dangerous situation. All the while the software update did not do anything. I urge NHTSA to force FCA/Stellantis to replace the clucth on all affected vehicles, or reimburse customers who like myself will do so at their own cost.
Water leaking inside vehicle from the rear window. I went online and discovered there are several people having issues with the same type of problem. I would hate for the humidity to cause electrical malfunctions causing an accident from water damage.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the transmission started slipping. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V116000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer confirmed that the parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the clutch assembly needed to be replaced. Additionally, two transmission mount bolts were missing, and one driveshaft bolt was fractured. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 18,624.
The clutch has been under recall for over 1 year (399 days at this point) without any solution from the manufacturer. This is also the 3rd recall of the clutch assembly. When will this be fixed?????
While I was driving on the freeway, suddenly all of my warning lights came on and my windshield wipers and the power steering went out. It was very difficult to pull over with the power steering out and stop. This is the second time this has occurred in 6 months. The first time this happened I had it towed to the dealer, they found nothing wrong but when I went to pick it up it happened again before I left the dealer. The service manager kept it and they ran more codes and thought they resolved the problem, but the same thing happened again when I went to pick it up. Finally, they gave me a loaner vehicle and after a month the Gladiator was finally fixed. The dealer said it was a defective wiring harness. Now the same problem is back. This is a serious safety issue due to the power steering going put and locking up the steering wheel. I have read many, many complaints from other Jeep Gladiator owners of the same issue.
When driving on the roadway at speeds of approximately 50-60 mph, and after hitting a bumpy patch in the road, the car wheels and steering system begins to shake violently. I explain it this way..... imagine driving along with no issues and suddenly without notice, the round wheels become square wheels. It can be a very traumatic experience and is certainly dangerous. I then need to immediately carefully slow down and/or pull to the side of the road and come to a stop. Then, I can proceed back onto the road and the Jeeps seems to be ok. I have 51K miles on the Jeep, which has all the original factory components, with no alterations. This began a few months ago his has happened 3-4 times in the last few weeks. I have an appointment with the Jeep dealership in a week.
Steering is very loose, wanders all over the road and is especially noticeable at higher speeds. It’s very exhausting constantly correcting the steering to keep straight on the road. There is a lot of play in the steering box. I’ve taken my jeep to be fixed by the dealership more times than I can count. I’ve had the steering box replaced 3 times with no improvement. This has been a day 1 issue that hasn’t been fixed. It’s especially dangerous in the snow, I had a perfect driving record till I went off the road during my first winter. Dealer confirmed there was a lot of play in the steering but hasn’t fixed it, they’ve just basically throw their hands up in the air. This isn’t what I expected when I bought a new Jeep, it’s been a nightmare.
Manual Transmission started slipping/malfunctioning related to overheating. Jeep dealership stated it was driver issue, and nothing else was wrong with manual trasmission. Dealer charged me $3500 to repair/replace transmission @ 35000 miles. Dealer refusedto cover repairs and repeatedly stated there was no issues with factory manual transmissions. Filed claim under Manufacturers website and nothing has been done. note: manual transmission was replaced with OEM manual transmission, and no recall work was performed. Replacement transmission is now showing signs of slippage due ti overheating.
WHEN DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE HIGHWAY (70MPH) we experienced some rough road. The steering wheel and the whole vehicle began to shake. This has happened several times and the shaking stopped when we slowed down significantly. Thankfully there were no cars in our immediate vicinity or this could have caused and accident. WE are reporting this to the dealership today. A search on social media reported many other people having this same problem.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated while driving approximately 50-60 MPH, the vehicle experienced the death wobble after driving over a bump on the roadway. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 28,460.
While driving on a main road, in a rural area, the "Electronic Stability Control Maintenance" alert was enabled. It was a cold January morning and approximately 35 degrees at 9am. My tire pressure alerts were also activated and I presumed that the Stability Control alert was due to a potential flat tire, not just a cold morning pressure imbalance, which happens frequently when there are drastic swings in temperature. Less than a minute later, the "Electronic Throttle Control Maintenance Required" alert flashed and I lost the ability to accelerate. I was in an area that was going uphill and no shoulder. Due to my momentum, I was able to get halfway up the hill and pull over into a residential driveway. I shut the car off, waited a minute and turned it back on. I attempted to pull back onto the road and noticed that a) I could still not accelerate and b) There was a large oil truck barreling up the hill and I would be a potential hazard and accident if I pulled in front of it. I then began to notice that smoke was billowing from under the hood. I turned back into the residential driveway and immediately shut off the vehicle and called for roadside assistance. The vehicle was taken by flatbed to the nearest dealership to be diagnosed. They ended up determining that there was moisture in the oil and claimed that it was common in this model year. They flushed the systems and gave me an oil change, which was was due for anyhow. The dealership kept the vehicle overnight and said they wanted to assess how it would perform in cold temperatures before returning my vehicle. I am very concerned that this is happening so soon. It is the first new vehicle I have ever purchased for myself and I do not take it off-road and live 10 miles from work, travelling on rural roads and recreational highway travel three-four times a year.
The ESS/Auto Start/Stop system is unavailable rendering the remote start for cold weather unavailable. This issue also effects the reliability of the battery and electrical supply as a whole potentially leading to unexpected engine stoppages and stranding due to a no start scenario. The issue is widespread and well documented among 2018-Current Jeep Rangler models as well as 2020-Current Jeep Gladiator models. Causes are reported by dealers ranging from premature failure of the start/stop auxiliary battery to TPM/distribution box failures. My vehicle has experienced this issue twice with the first occurrence shortly after purchase. With many of the effected vehicles reaching the end of their warranty period, the number of vehicles circulating on highways will increase creating a safety hazard. Further, the failure of this system may create an EPA compliance issue as the ESS/Auto Start/Stop system is required equipment to meet EPA fuel economy standards for the fleet.
Driving down the road the steering gear box will randomly quit, could be doing 70 mph down the expressway and not be able to swerve, turn or avoid an accident. Has happened to me three times. Also the steering free play on these vehicles is absolutely insane and very difficult to keep the vehicle in its lane going down the road. I have been pulled over by police three times for “swerving” and it’s all due to the steering wheel having too much free play. This needs to be recalled because it’s unsafe to drive
Defrost only blows from center vents. Wiper blades ice up and cause visibility issues
I recently purchased this vehicle used, while driving the lights go off and the vehicle shuts off while moving. Not displaying any warning indicators at the time. Luckily vehicle is a manual, so I have been able to coast to a stop safely. Situation could be very dangerous. Once off the vehicle will go dead and won't restart. After a few moments vehicle will restart until the problem occurs again without warning. Jeep/chrysler has obvious issues with this vehicle and has not done any recalls. Even though they have documented occurrences with similar vehicles.
On 12/2/22 while driving at 70 mph, I suddenly lost power steering. Every system warning light came on and windshield wipers began running when this happened. I managed to get it to the side of the road, but it has zero gauges, no acceleration, cannot shift, and cannot be shut off. After 30 minutes, the warnings began to clear themselves and I was able to safely drive it to a dealer. The battery was assumed to be the issue and it was replaced. Picked the vehicle back up on 12/7/22 and the exact same scenario occurred on 12/13/22; highway speeds, complete loss of power steering, multiple system warnings, wind shield wipers began running. Once again, couldn’t shift it and couldn’t shut it off. I timed the process the second time. At exactly 30 minutes, it began resetting itself and I was able to drive it home before delivering it to the dealership this morning.
Death wobble. Excessive wobbling while traveling on the highway. Usually occurs after traveling over variations in the roadway surface. Happened one before when vehicle had approximately 30,000 miles. Dealer replaced the stabilizer. Started again at approximately 60,000 miles. Wobble can get so bad i feel like i’m going to get thrown out of the vehicle.
my wife and I were driving on a freeway each time this happened. After driving over a bump in the road, the front end vibrated violently to the point we had to slow down drastically and pull over. It controlled okay after slowing down to a very slow speed. This has happened approximately 5 times. We are scared to drive this vehicle. It causes the steering wheel to vibrate. We called the dealership today (Sat.) noone called back but we will call them Mon. This vehicle is too dangerous to drive. It has between 27 and 28 thousand miles. It has never been off road.We bought it new off the lot and will pursue this with the dealer. We wanted to report it before someone is in an accident. It is available for inspection.
transmission will not shift all the time and gets hung up! After following a group this seems to be a problem with the gladiator automatic transmission. It will not shift into reverse and shifts hard from 3rd to 4th. This should be a recall due to so many people having issues and the only thing to fix it is to get a new transmission.
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, he heard a scraping sound inside the vehicle. The contact then stated that while he pulled into a service station, the brake pad and caliper bracket assembly detached and got caught in the rear passenger’s side wheel, causing the tire to be punctured. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number, but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 33,000.
Steering wheel violently shakes if driving at highway speed and you hit a small bump
Front end violently shakes between 30 and 75 mph when hitting a bump in the road and is better known as a "Death Wobble". The issue based on experts can be the steering damper, tie rods ends and/or tie rod, drag link, track bar, steering box or all of the above. The problem is that there is no factory parts to fix this issue so I've had to go to after market parts to get this resolved. First time it happed on the hwy it almost threw me off the hwy.
Jeep turns off/power off/ dies when driving any speed. I was driving in freeway 60+mph and it just died. I took to dealer on january 2022 and took 2 weeks to figure out a electrical wiring hardness was bad. It was good until now October 2022. It died again like the first time. Only way to power it up is getting a battery jump. This is same issue as the first time. It was not cheap and I seen online that alot of other gladiators are having same issue.im about to take it again to dealer this week
At highway speeds when hitting a slight bump (i.e. expansion joint on a bridge or road way) the vehicle shakes violently. This can easily make the driver lose control of the vehicle. The Dealership reproduced and confirmed the issue and a Jeep Star Ticket was opened.
Multiple issues occuring starting (documented) at 22,719 miles (09/27/2022) - stop/start and remote start had not been functioning properly - vehicle died. Required towing to dealer. Both batteries were dead. Upon leaving dealer they had not reconnected stop/start. Fast forward to 05/04/2024 and vehicle once again unchargeable to start. Took warrantied battery back to dealer and they wanted us to tow it there to check. We spent 350.91 to replace ourselves due to a lack of confidence with Jeep. Then on 05/20/2024 took it to a 4x4 center and discovered multiple issues with vehicle from manufacturing and dealer work. To start -- 1) the rear differential pinion seal is leaking 2) the power stearing box is aluminum and showed signs of flex and contact 3) dealer installed lift was incomplete leaving the front axle off center (visually observed about a 3" offset).
The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH over a bump in the roadway, the vehicle experienced a death wobble. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to drive on the side of the road at 10 MPH until he regained control of the vehicle. The contact stated he had experienced the failure six times. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 47,550.
Shaking of front suspension - steering wheel and front tires
i replaced the gears to 513 at 5000 miles The locker went out at 17000 miles.. The locker is internal to the axle Went to jeep to try to get it covered under warranty and they have refused stating that changing the gears voids the warranty on anything in the axle This should not be valid as the locker was never touched.. There are 1000's of locker issues going on with the axle
Error Codes P0300, 301,305, 420. Driving on the interstate I got the CEL light. One point during driving when the 420 code came in vehicle went into limp mode and speed was greatly reduced in 70 mph traffic. Luckily I was able to get to the side of the road so no accident happened. Researched the issue and changed ignition coil packs and plugs. Upon restarting vehicle got the P0300 coda again. More research done and found the bulletin from FCA for the repair. Took to dealership and they refreshed. Picked up from dealership and threw the code instantly. Took to another dealership and now they are saying it is because of aftermarket coil packs and plugs. This is a big issue with JEEP and they are not trying to fix anything.
