NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the temperature gauge started to indicate that the vehicle was overheating. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact also stated that the failure began one month after receiving the vehicle back from the dealer following a recall repair. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V813000 (Electrical System); the VIN was included, but the vehicle had already been repaired under the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
My vehicle stalls a lot when driving. At first i thought it was an issue with the tire alignment but i was told by a mechanic that i had good alignment. My car stalls and shakes a lot while speeding up in the highway. I honestly feel unsafe at this point because its gotten worse in a short amount of time. My seatbelts are lose and useless. I love my car but i may change it for a safer option. It is definitely dangerous to go anywhere but it is my only car i have.
Headrest deployed without an impact. Plastic locking clip broken. Can’t reset.
drain water from AC leaking into cabin & flooding driver side & filling up under seat well where ECU is located & sloshing around
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V813000 (Electrical System) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
My 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Jeep GC) frequently and numerously experiences sudden shutdowns while driving. Consequently, not only do I lose power to various electrical features, but the power steering assist and power brake booster also become inoperative. This issue has been acknowledged by Jeep for other model years, but regrettably, they have failed to accept responsibility for it for the 2012 model, despite its significant impact on safety. Interestingly, there is a known safety recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2008 Jeep GC related to a Wireless Ignition Node Module (Safety Recall P57 / NHTSA 14V-567). This raises concerns about potential similarities between the issues experienced in different model years. Numerous individuals have reported similar problems in online forums and posts. In an effort to address the issue, I have reached out to Jeep's customer service and my local dealership. However, both entities seem unwilling to acknowledge the existence of a broader systemic problem, claiming no knowledge of the root cause. It is essential for Jeep to take responsibility and promptly address this serious safety concern in all affected model years, ensuring the safety and peace of mind of their customers.
My husband was involved in a serious collision with another vehicle on July 20, 2023 and he sustained serious injuries because the airbags never deployed.
The camshaft has gone bad and unnatural wear to the lifters has caused the issue. Also, after researching the design of the engine, it is obvious that there is a design flaw. The camshaft does not receive sufficient oil in order to be lubricated due to its location in the engine. The vehicle only has 114,000 miles. It has been taken care of, and received the normal maintenance according to the owners manual. This particular version of the hemi engine has such failures well documented by multiple sources. Such an issue and malfunction attributes to premature engine failure. Such a significant engine design flaw can potentially cause injury to all occupants in the vehicle.
We were about an hour away from home (in the mountains) and our Jeep had been running fine. We had stopped for a while and when we got back to our Jeep and started it, just about every warning light on the dash board came on and wouldn’t go off (the brake light, check engine, airbag, ABS, etc.) The middle of the dash was also flashing different messages…”service park assist and service power steering”. We started to drive and the car was jerking really hard while it was shifting gears. We think it was getting stuck in a high gear because it would hardly drive after we stopped at a stoplights. We turned our hazards on and just tried to make it to an auto parts shop. Our windshield wipers were automatically coming on and the speedometer and RPM needle were both going up and down really quickly. We spent just shy of two long months without our Jeep while it was in the shop. The mechanic ultimately replaced the clock spring and the TPIM. Meanwhile, I joined a Jeep Grand Cherokee Facebook group and it seems like this is a pretty common issue in Jeep Grand Cherokees. It was a costly repair and was very difficult for us to go without our second car for two months. I really feel like this issue needs to be addressed by Jeep.
2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo In August of 2020, I brought the vehicle to my repair shop due to a leak, and hard to steer at 75061 miles. They performed a repair of the rack & pinion, power steering hose, and an alignment. On 5/23/23, I had the vehicle in a shop to check on a sqeak while turning the wheel along with a clunking sound. They reported that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced at 107184 miles. I contacted the FCA-Jeep customer care. They wanted a diagnosis at Victory CDJR dealership. On 5/31/23 at 107701 miles, the dealership found that the steering rack, and both tie rods need replacement. I contacted the FCA immediately, and they determined not covered by warranty.
I was driving and the battery light came on with a chime, within seconds the car smelled hot, the air conditioning went out, road hazard lights on dash indicating flat tire came on, windshield wipers were going on and off at different speeds and windows were opening and closing and then did not work at all. I got the car into the driveway as I was en route to our home. As I got car to the driveway I lost all power. I had the same thing happen in 2019 - Report # 11255268. I do not know where to go to get the vehicle repaired or it the old recall will apply to this problem once again. Should I have the car towed to a dealer? I have my own private mechanic that addressed the problem in 2019. Please contact me asap. I don't know what the plan of action should be. Can I bring it to my own mechanic or does it need to go to a dealer. Please call or send me an e mail as soon as possible as I am without a vehicle. My number is [XXX] or e mail me at [XXX]. OR [XXX]. or use both e mails. Thank you! INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
A couple week ago noticed fluid on my garage floor. It seemed to be dripping from the left front of the car. Also noticed this oil on the garage shelf which is closed to the car when I park it in the garage. Today, May 23, 2023 went to have the oil change in the car, and was told the power steering fluid was low .
2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO LEATHER INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY RECALL. THE CONSUMER STATED HE IS OVER 3 YEARS PAST THE TIME OF THE RECALL AND STILL IS STARING AT THE SHRIVELED UP LEATHER DASHBOARD COVER AND THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS SINCE EXPIRED.
I just recently purchased this used 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The problem I am experience, while driving at 74 mph the engine just shuts off. The vehicle would not restart for about 15 minutes. This has happened at least daily. The mechanic shop has checked the engine completely over. However they are stumped, The shop was able to repeat the problem but there are no codes. I know there was a recall on the fuel pump relay and then another on the relay. My mechanic has replaced the fuel pump relay but it still happens. I was reading in numerous blogs of this issue happening to many people. This past saturday night I was coming home from my second job when the car stalled out in the construction zone of 696 in Detroit, I can't tell you how many cars came close to killing me. This problem needs to be fixed by Jeep but there seems to be no movement, I'd hate to see people killed over this KNOWN issue. I know last Saturday night was the most fearful night of my life.
Was stopped at light and 2012 Jeep Cherokee lost all power and engine stalled. Lost lights, radio, heat and engine. It did restart after a minut or two. A week later, while driving, car began lagging/running rough. I felt I could not drive faster than 25 mph. Drove to Jeep dealer. Dealer is telling me it will cost more than $1500 to fix. I suspect this is a problem with the fuel pump relay....
Airbag light came on and I took it to my mechanic and he stated the the buckle attached to the seat is throwing a code which disables my passenger airbag. The part is on national back order. Is what our local dealer said and we will not be getting a part for a very long time
After getting my car back from big o doge in Greenville sc I was on my way to work and stopped at a redlight when the light turned green my car just sat there and didn’t move I pressed the gas but nothing it just revved up like it was in neutral pressed the gas to the floor nothing all of a sudden it was like it jumped and took off…also did the same thing at a stop sign up hill and I had a car coming in the other lane as I was crossing the lane to get into the correct one….I had open recalls and set up for it to be checked when I arrived at the delarship they told me my recalls were closed. My car was not checked or repaired at the time how can you just cancel a recall/campaign after notification and claim parts aren’t available but the car was never fixed? I called the delarship paid 400 for 2 diagnostics and they didn’t put my trans cap back on so now they’ve basically ruined my car and didn’t fix NOTHING
Oil pressure sensor code P0522. The engine oil pressure sensor fails before and after oil changes. This causes the oil temperature to sporadically increase and decrease psi drastically from 20 to 110 psi and vice versa. This has been confirmed with multiple OBD2 sensors along with the check engine light constantly on.
The Grand Cherokee shut down while driving on the highway. It was like the ignition turned off. I pulled over and could not start the car. After 30 minutes the push button ignition finally worked. This has happened at least three times and is intermittent, but dangerous enough that you lose power to the vehicle. The problem is with the wireless ignition node.at times the push button or remote start up feature will not start the engine. But once it does, it randomly shuts it down as if communication is lost or the key is not recognized, even with the FOB key in close proximity. No warning indication is given nor is it reported as a code to be analyzed. It’s not the FOBs, not the batteries in the FOBs, and not the other remote capabilities such as remote keyless entry. It is only push button (keyless) ignition and remote ignition that won’t start the vehicle. The severity is that once you do get it started and driving, it randomly with no warning shuts down causing you to coast wherever you are. I was fortunate to avoid a serious accident two of the times this happened on a major highway.
I have been waiting for more than 5 months to be called in to fix a recall on my vehicle. Your site stated that if my recall has not been addressed in a timely manner to advise you all. Please help.
The last recall was for a fuel system relay jumper wire harness. The truck will start and shut off multiple times in a row before it will stay running. It is very random and can happen 8x in a row then not do it gain for a month or week. No warning lights or codes are given and it's completely random. It's gotten worse after the recalled part was installed and now I'm being told I have to replace the entire TIPM and not just that wire harness that was the original recall a couple years ago.. This is a huge issue with Chrysler/ jeeps and it is across multiple years and vehicles- really wish someone would issue a recall being its such a common problem and it's the vehicles brain basically and very expensive and scary to have random no starts - you never know when it's gonna happen.
2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO LEATHER INSTRUMENT PANEL TOP PAD SAFETY RECALL. THE CONSUMER STATED THE PARTS WERE ORDERED BY THE MANUFACTURER UNDER WARRANTY BUT DODGE CANCELLED THE ORDER. IF THE CONSUMER WANTED TO REORDER THE PART IT WOULD BE AN OUT POCKET EXPENSE BECAUSE THE WARRANTY HAS SINCE EXPIRED.
My Grand Cherokee started idling rough, then developed a misfire and often times while driving it would just die even while driving on the highway. It almost caused me to have an accident on two occasions. I learned on the NHTSA website my Jeep had an open recall and I contacted my local Jeep dealer only to have them tell me that the parts needed to perform the repair were "restricted"
I was leaving work and made a right turn. The vehicle steering and breaks locked up and I hit a telephone pole. No warning lights illuminated. The vehicle did not stall. Serious injury could have occurred. Police report and involvement happened as it was a large accident.
I recently hit 100k and my jeep has been stalling. The first time it happened I was goi g about 45mph then stopped in traffic. I went to accelerate and nothing. It didn’t sputter and no lights came on saying anything was wrong. Input it in park, pushed the button and it started back up. A few weeks later, I pushed the button to start it and nothing happened. It did not even turn over. Again, I was able to push the button and start it. The most recent time, a month or so after, I came off the freeway and was slowing down. Again nothing to alarm me of it dying, just died and my power steering went out. I pulled over, put it in park and restarted it without issues.
My 2012 jeep SRT8 will be driving n jerking and feels unsafe think gotta be a n23 transfer case or final drive ordeal they have with different year not my year but should be and I don't feel safe at all n I paid a lot of money for this premium vehicle and getting run around and serv 4wd and traction control off n fcw off pops up after few minutes all at same time got transfer case control module coming in mail hopefully it works but if not it's gotta b update or flash transmission update but it'll literally be surging and when slowing down it'll fell like it's getting shift in wrong gear it's crazy

The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.
PASSENGER SIDE VANITY MIRROR CAUGHT FIRE. MY EYES STARTED BURNING AND SMOKE FILLED THE CAR SHORTLY AFTER STARTING THE CAR. I WAS SITTING IN THE CAR WAITING FOR THE RAIN TO SLOW DOWN BEFORE I STARTED DRIVING OTHER WISE I WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING WHEN I REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING.
Airbag warning light flashes on and off at random times, whether care is moving or not. Noticeably more frequent when driving and breaks are applied.

I have an outstanding recall on my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee which the dealerships in my area refuse to fix. The NHTSA Recall Number 19V-813.
Car stalls out while driving causing serious safety risk as it happened on the highway. Happened twice on the highway, once on a local street and another time in a tunnel
The entire leather dash has become the delaminated they had issued a recall on us for a six-month period in early 2020 they kept pushing back saying they didn’t have the parts and six months lapsed I am just worried if I were to get into an accident that the airbags on the passenger side would not operate properly due to the fact that all the leather has sagged and become unglued how can a manufacturer only make a safety recall good for six months the mechanic told me it’s because they only have a certain amount of budget on labor and parts to do safety recalls and that the shops don’t want their time taken up because it is such a time extensive process there were thousands of vehicle’s affected and a lot of them were unable to be fixed because of part shortage and the six-month timeframe they gave everyone How do I get this fixed without paying $3000
There is a failure in the driver seat belt system resulting in the car not knowing if the driver is buckled. This affects the function of the airbag system in the vehicle. The sensor in the seat belt restraint buckle assembly (P/N 1GQ92DX9AC) that is responsible for reporting if the buckle is fastened has failed resulting in 2 error lights on the dashboard: seat belt and airbag. When evaluating the codes stored in the ECU, I found code B1B51, "Active 1st Row Driver Seat Belt Sensor Circuit High", was triggered. This is indicating a failure of the sensor or harness in the buckle assemble attached to the drivers seat. I am unable to source a replacement part 1GQ92DX9AC since they seem to be backordered everywhere. I've contacted several dealers and parts distributers. This means my vehicle is currently stuck in an unsafe condition. I'm unsure about the affect that this failure has on the airbag system but since the airbag error light is illuminated on the dashboard, I'm worried that the system is disabled since the vehicle doesn't know if the driver is buckled. I've researched this issue on various forums and this isn't an uncommon issue. There are many posts about people trying to diagnose and repair this. This same part number is shared between the WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the corresponding Dodge Durango sharing the same model years. I have not brought the vehicle to a dealer to confirm my diagnosis. I'm a mechanical engineer and typically maintain and repair my own vehicles.
Vehicle stalled without warning. No power whatsoever. Illuminated battery light came on. Noticed a burning odor coming from vehicle. Checked engine bay and noticed heavy smoke coming from alternator for a good 10 minutes. Vehicle would not take a jump nor could I put into gear. Battery is completely dead. PCM also seems to be fried. Will have to be towed to Dealership. Called Jeep costumer care and referenced the t36 recall but my vin does not fall under it even though vehicle fits EXACT description of recall. Also noticed that many others are have same problem with Jeep and them not expanding the recall to their vin. How terrible!! This could have easily been a fatal situation. Jeep needs to take some responsibility and action!
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the vehicle was idling rough idle almost causing the vehicle to stall. The contact stated that while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle seemed to operate and run normally. The contact stated that the check engine and the electronic throttle control warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that after shifting into drive(D) and accelerating to approximately 10 MPH, the vehicle hesitated, revved, and then lunged forward. Additionally, the contact noted that the vehicle had been consuming an unusual amount of coolant that required him to add about one gallon of coolant per month. The contact stated that there was no leaks or puddles of coolant around the vehicle when the vehicle was parked in the driveway. The contact had driven the vehicle to an independent mechanic who attempted to download data from the computer but was unable to find any failure data on the engine "DTC" data. The mechanic retrieved fault code number: P0627 (PCM Engine Control Module). The independent mechanic was unable to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the independent mechanic researched online and related one of the failures to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V813000 (Electrical System). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,800.
P06DE "OIL PRESSURE SENSOR STUCK ON HIGH" FAULTY SENSOR Seems to be fairly prevalent for this make/model/generation.
I began having issues with my vehicle stalling in the middle of turns and when I came to a stop at a stop light in September of 2019. I took my vehicle to Holden Doge Jeep in Dover, De. I was told it had a recall to replace the TIPM and the fuel relay switch. I was told that mine had gone bad. I was placed on a wait list. I called over 15 times checking on the status, still having issues with my vehicle stalling. Last week it stalled at a light and would not start at all. I had to have it towed to the dealership. I was told that they finally had the part in and I would be able to get a loaner until my car was finished. When my vehicle got there, the service guy told me, the part was for someone else and I would have to wait again. They refused to give me a loaner and the manufacturer called me back and said a loaner wouldn’t be covered under this recall. They told me they ordered the part and it would take 5 days to get there. Here it is a week later and I am still without a vehicle and now I am getting the run around.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph when traffic began to back up. When the contact was attempting to get into the left lane, the vehicle's ahead suddenly stopped. The contact depressed the brake pedal, however, the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward causing them to rear-end the vehicle in front. The air bags did not deploy. There was damage to the vehicle in front where their entire rear end was crushed inward. The contact's vehicle was towed. A police report was filed. There were no injuries. There was no medical attention needed. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 131,000.
Since owning this vehicle (2013), it periodically stalls while driving. There is no warning and most times I am on a highway or getting off an exit. When this happens, I have no power steering ability. I have been lucky so far and I have not caused a serious accident when these episodes have occurred. My wife refused to ride or to drive the Jeep because of this problem. I see online that other Jeep owners have experienced the same problem. I have taken it to a Jeep dealer for service since 2013 and they are never able to diagnose the root cause of this problem. This problem seems to be happening more often - I fear for my life and those around me due to this sporadic problem. Please hold Jeep responsible for getting to the root of this issue with these vehicles.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact had an emissions test scheduled and failed due to the check engine warning light. The contact stated that the vehicle engine was idling roughly. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the number two cylinder had been misfiring and needed to be replaced. The independent mechanic referred the contact to a dealer where she had been advised that there had been a manufacturer recall associated with the VIN, however, the recall warranty had expired. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. The contact stated that they were never notified of the extended warranty for the vehicle.
The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland headlamp assembly are defective and need to safety recall. The defect poses significant risk to driver especially at night. For example, this overland no longer level the headlamp low beam at the correct level. The light only cast out about 10 feet ahead of the headlamp. Even when engaging the high beam both headlights only show a few feet further. This is unsafe and risky when driving at night as well as on roads without any streetlights. It is like driving into darkness. The low beams headlights are pointing so low to the ground that they do not illuminate the license plate of another vehicle that is 10 feet in front. Prior to failure defect there was an in-dash notice stating the computer module lost communication with the right headlamp assembly. About a month later another message displayed the computer module lost communication with the left headlamp assembly. I took vehicle to local Jeep dealer for analysis, and they confirmed that Jeep headlight assemblies would have to be replaced with an estimated cost of about $3000.00. I told dealer this defect is a safety risk, and it needs to be a safety recall. I have to limit significantly my night driving due to safety risk. I am asking the NHTSA and Jeep Manufacture to issue recall to fix, correct, and replace this safety defect. Thanks for your prompt attention to this safety matter. Respectfully, Owner, Grand Cherokee Overland
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the RPM fluctuated before the transmission slammed into gear. The contact stated that the ABS warning light and another unknown warning light were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed with transmission failure, and a failure with the accelerator pedal. The accelerator pedal was replaced, and other unknown parts were replaced on the transmission. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, while driving 30 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle immediately and the vehicle stalled. After several attempts, the vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was towed back to an independent mechanic, and it was diagnosed that the throttle had failed and needed to be replaced, and the accelerator pedal also needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The contact stated that recently the vehicle failed to exceed 40 MPH while driving. The contact stated that the check engine warning light and ABS system warning light were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired after the most recent failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but denied assistance in covering the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.
car shuts off while driving 2times in 3 weeks
Vehicle has inexplicably, and randomly stalled, and lost power steering and power brakes while operating. This has happened on multiple occasions, during random times of the day/season, while in movement, and while stopped at a traffic light/stop sign. There is no rhyme or reason to how or when this happens, and frustratingly cannot not be reproduced by a mechanic or dealership. When it happens, all other systems that were operating continue to operate (eg. radio stays playing, climate control (AC or heat), and the instrument panel doesn't indicate that anything is abnormal. Safety is a huge concern, as its difficult to control and/or slow the vehicle down, and we have barely avoided collisions. It has been taken to a dealer on multiple occasions, but to no avail, as the condition could not be reproduced. Other than the dealership's service department, the vehicle or component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were NO warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. We took ownership from the vehicles first and only other owner (my father in law) upon his passing back in April 2018. The condition happened within months of taking ownership, and has happened at least 8-10 times since then. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. We would like to sell the vehicle (for this, AND other reasons), but do not feel comfortable selling an unsafe vehicle to anyone. We have incurred rental car costs while the car is in the shop for diagnosis. Upon a quick search online, there was quite a bit of evidence of this condition happening with others.
I have an on going issue with the vehicle stalling while slowing down for intersections, roundabouts and exit ramps. This has been happening since 2018. The vehicle traveling around 35-25 decelerating, the RPMs will just drop to zero and the engine will shut off. No warning lights, codes or indication I have lost power. Latest incident was on 1/14/22 in Mukwonago, WI after have only driven the vehicle for about 10 minutes. Coming from a 55 zone donw to a stop at an intersection the vehicle stalled with no warning around 30-25 MPH. 1/16/22 I was entering a roundabout and saw the RPMs dropping below idle to zero and was able to stop the stall by shifting the transmission into neutral. RPMs immediately went back to idle.
There is an existing recall on my vehicle. My vehicle was (still is) randomly stalling while driving, sometimes at high speeds. I brought my vehicle in to a local dealership to get it fixed. About 2 weeks later, it vehicle completely shut down while I was driving it. I really just want to get away from this vehicle all together, as it is an obvious risk to be dirving.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 15 MPH, the vehicle would shake uncontrollably while driving over a bump in the roadway. There were no warning lights illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The VIN was not available.
I did the fuel pump relay recall and the problem that it was supposed to fix isn’t fixed.I’ll be driving along and the jeep will stall as I’m driving when turning off the highway and exit ,the power steering and power brakes cut out I pull over put the jeep in park and it starts right up.Then it’s ok for a couple of weeks and it happens again no engine light or close faults . Jeep needs to correct this problem as it is very dangerous
