AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR FAILS TO ENGAGE. I HAD TO REPLACE THE COMPRESSOR ONCE ALREADY IN 2007, SERVICE TECH SAID THE SPRING IN THE COMPRESSOR MUST HAVE BROKE. NEEDED TO REPLACE THE COMPRESSOR. NOW 2009, AND AGAIN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, THE A/C COMPRESSOR WILL NOT ENGAGE. GOING TO HAVE IT REPAIRED THIS WEEK ! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAULTY ENGINE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SERVICE WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
WAS TURNING RIGHT ONTO A BUSY ROAD WHEN THE FRONT UPPER BALL JOINT FAILED. MANAGED TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WAS TOLD BY A LOCAL DEALER THAT CHRYSLER WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR THIS, REGARDLESS OF THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS I'VE READ ABOUT ONLINE. I REPLACED THE UPPER CONTROL ARM MYSELF. $226.00 IN PARTS. *TR

NOTICED SMALL RUST BUBBLES DEVELOPING UNDER PAINT AT AREA OF SEAMS ALONG RIGHT SIDE OF REAR WINDOW GLASS AND ALSO ON ROOF ON RIGHT SIDE JUST BELOW ROOF RACK RAIL AND REAR ROOF MOUNTED BRAKE LIGHT. BROUGHT TO DEALER AND SHOWED SERVICE MANAGER BUT SAID NOTHING COULD BE DONE AS I WAS PAST WARRANTY LIMIT FOR RUSTPROOF CORROSION. THIS WAS ABOUT 3-4 YEARS AGO. REQUESTED CONTACT BY DISTRICT MANAGER-WHO FINALLY CALLED AFTER MULTIPLE FOLLOW-UP CALLS BY ME, AND SAID MY CLAIM WAS DENIED. WROTE LETTER TO JEEP CUSTOMER RELATIONS CORPORATE BUT NEVER HEARD FROM THEM. RUST SITUATION HAS PROGRESSED AND NOW HAVE SUBSTANTIAL HOLE IN RIGHT REAR CORNER OF ROOF. RUST SPREADING. CAR HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AND CLEANED REGULARLY, WAXED AT LEAST 2X PER YEAR. REST OF VEHICLE IN TOP SHAPE. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN JEEP'S LACK OF HELP. *TR

THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE OIL SENSOR WAS REPLACED AND THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A TURN. THE SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER FAILED TO TIGHTEN AND THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, BUT DID NOT INFLATE COMPLETELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A SALVAGE YARD AND DEEMED DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THERE WAS ONE FATALITY. THE DRIVER SUFFERED FROM BROKEN RIBS AND FACIAL DEFORMATION. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS RECEIVED. I HAD JUST BACKED OUT OF A PARKING SPACE IN A BUSY PARKING LOT, DROVE FORWARD ABOUT 20 FEET GOING NO MORE THAN 7-10 MPH, THEN MADE A LEFT - STILL WITHIN THE PARKING LOT. WHEN TURNING, I HEARD A GRINDING NOISE, THEN SUDDENLY, THE FRONT END OF MY 2002 JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE COLLAPSED ONTO THE FRONT TIRE OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE UPPER BALL JOINT OF THE VEHICLE HAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED, KNOCKING THE WHEEL OFF IN THE PROCESS. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED IN THE LATE AFTERNOON ON A SUNDAY (WHEN MECHANICS ARE NOT OPEN). AAA TOWED THE JEEP TO A LOCAL GARAGE NEARBY; HOWEVER, ON MONDAY MORNING, I CALLED CHRYSLER TO FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED. MY CALL WAS PICKED UP BY AN OVERSEAS CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. HE TOLD ME THAT IF I COULD HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A CHRYSLER DEALER, THEY WOULD SEE WHAT THEY COULD DO ABOUT COVERING THE REPAIR, BUT TO CALL BACK AFTER THEY'D SPOKEN WITH THE DEALER. LATER THAT AFTERNOON, I CALLED BACK. LONG STORY SHORT, MY CALL WAS ESCALATED TO A GUY IN DETROIT, WHO AT FIRST SAID THAT THE CALL CENTER REP HAD NO BUSINESS SUGGESTING THAT MY REPAIR WOULD BE COVERED. WHEN I TOLD HIM I HAVE PHOTOS OF WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CAR, HE AUTHORIZED THE REPAIR. THE DEALER HAD TO REPLACE THE UPPER CONTROL ARM AND BALL JOINT, AND THE BRAKE LINE WHICH WAS SEVERED WHEN THE FRONT END COLLAPSED! I ASKED THE DEALER FOR THE DEFECTIVE PARTS. HE SAID CHRYSLER WOULD WANT THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE COVERING IT "UNDER WARRANTY." THIS IS A MAJOR DEFECT AND SAFETY ISSUE - ONE OF MANY IN THE 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. I SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD PULLED OUT ONTO THE BUSY HIGHWAY! WHILE I WAS HAPPY THAT CHRYSLER COVERED THIS COST, THE CAR NEEDED FURTHER ADJUSTMENTS WHEN IT WAS RETURNED TO ME AS THE SUSPENSION FELT LOOSE AND THE VEHICLE WAS PULLING TO THE LEFT AND SHAKING. THE DEALER SAID THESE WERE ALL UNRELATED (?!), AND CHARGED ME FOR THOSE REPAIRS. *TR
HAD JUST PURCHASED A JEEP LIBERTY USED --FIRST TIME I DROVE IT ON A WET ROAD-I WAS BRAKING AS USUAL AT A RED LIGHT--THE CAR SKIDDED AND SWERVED 40 FEET, FINALLY STOPPING BUT NOT BEFORE I HAD TO VERY OFF THE ROAD TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME --I WAS ONLY GOING 30-35 MILES AN HOUR WHEN I STARTED BRAKING--I WAS TERRIFIED BY THE FACT THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP AND COULD ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES!! --TOOK THE CAR INTO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP--THEY SAID THE BRAKES WERE FINE --I HAD NEW TIRES PUT ON THE CAR --EVEN THOUGH THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE TIRES WERE FINE TOO --THE SECOND TIME -(--WET ROAD)--I WAS GOING ABOUT 25 MILES AND HOUR AND LIGHTLY BRAKED ----CAR SLID INSTEAD OF STOPPING---SAME DAY---NOW VERY CAUTIOUS, I CAREFULLY HIT THE BRAKES WHEN A CAR QUITE A DISTANCE AHEAD OF ME PULLED OUT --AGAIN--I WAS ONLY GOING ABOUT 35MPH---FORTUNATELY I STARTED BRAKING THE SECOND I SAW HIM BECAUSE THE CAR SKIDDED 30-40 FEET AT LEAST, TURNING TOWARD THE RIGHT, AND FINALLY STOPPED 3 CAR LENGTHS BEFORE I WOULD HAVE HIT THIS CAR IN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR ---HAD I NOT HAD THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT JUST MINUTES BEFORE ---I WOULD HAVE BEEN GOING 60 MILES AN HOUR AND NOT BEEN ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT--I WENT ONLINE TODAY --THERE ARE NUMEROUS SIMILAR COMPLAINTS WITH JEEP LIBERTY'S--ONE PERSON REFERS TO HER LIBERTY AS A DEATH TRAP--ANOTHER MAN SAID HIS WIFE COMPLAINED OF THIS AND HE DIDN'T BELIEVE HER UNTIL HE SKIDDED THROUGH AN INTERSECTION GOING ONLY 20 MPH!!! SOMEONE ELSE, KNOWING THIS PROBLEM , SIMPLY TRADED HIS VEHICLE TO AN UNSUSPECTING BUYER ---THIS DEFECT IS FRIGHTENING!!!! THIS IS A CAR I RARELY DRIVE-- FORTUNATELY BECAUSE NOW I CAN'T TAKE IT ON THE ROAD FOR FEAR OF HAVING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT!! *TR
FAILURE OF UPPER BALL JOINT LET SIDE ON 2-27-09, TWO DAYS AFTER THE LOWER BALL JOINT ON SAME SIDE WAS REPLACED AS PER RECALL. THE REPLACEMENT OF THE LOWER BALL JOINT WAS THE FOURTH SUCH REPLACEMENT. I INITIATED THE REPAIR TWO DAYS EARLIER AFTER THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO MAKE A GRINDING NOISE. THE LOWER BALL JOINT FAILED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING IN REVERSE AT LOW SPEED WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. THE FAILURE OF THE UPPER BALL JOINT HAPPENED ABOUT FIVE MINUTES AFTER TRAVELING AT 70 MPH DOWN AN INTERSTATE. AFTER EXITING THE FREEWAY, I PULLED THE JEEP INTO A PARKING LOT OF A CONVENIENCE TO CHECK DIRECTIONS AND THEN PULLED OUT AT LOW SPEED - LESS THAN 10 MPH. IT FAILED. *TR
2002 JEEP LIBERTY. CONSUMER STATES LEFT REAR WINDOW WAS STUCK OPEN *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE WINDOW REGULATOR WAS REPLACED THREE TIMES. THE WINDOW WOULD FALL DOWN AND GET STUCK. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CONTACT HEARD A LOT OF NOISE IN THE VEHICLE. THROUGH ONLINE RESEARCH, THE DEALER FOUND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V119000, NHTSA ACTION NUMBER EA08008 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM). THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, ALTHOUGH THE FAILURES WERE IDENTICAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000. THE LIGHTS ON MY JEEP LIBERTY TURN COMPLETELY OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE DRIVER MUST TURN ON AND OFF THE LIGHTS TO GET THEM TO COME BACK ON. THERE IS A CLICKING SOUND WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS AS IF THE LIGHTS ARE TURNING OFF BASED ON A TIMER OR SOMETHING. HARD TO REPRODUCE THIS ISSUE, THEREFORE ITS BEEN HARD TO DIAGNOSE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS FLICKER OFF AND ON. THE FAILURE HAS BEEN PERSISTENT FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK. THROUGH ONLINE RESEARCH, SEVERAL COMPLAINTS WERE FOUND FOR THIS VEHICLE REGARDING THE SAME COMPONENT. THE DEALER HAS NOT YET BEEN NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 107,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. WHEN THE CONTACT USED THE JACK TO CHANGE THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE, THE JACK BECAME STUCK IN AN UPWARD POSITION. HE WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE THE JACK FROM HIS VEHICLE. THE DEALER DID NOT ASSIST. THE JACK INFORMATION AND VIN WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 92,400.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SEATBELT LATCH BECAME STUCK AND HARD TO UNLOCK. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS SINCE 2009. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEATBELT NOW COMPLETELY FAILED AND WOULD LATCH AT ALL. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY A DEALER NOR HAD THE VEHICLE BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH IN REVERSE OUT OF A PARKING SPACE HE ATTEMPTED TO MOVE FORWARD AND THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE COLLAPSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE FRONT UPPER BALL JOINT. THE ESTIMATED COST FOR REPAIR WAS $1,000.00. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. HE WILL CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 90,000.
I OWN A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY AND WITHIN THE LAST YEAR I HAVE REPLACED THE SERPENTINE BELT, SPARK PLUGS, TEMP, BRAKES,ROTORS, ALL FLUIDS HAVE BEEN CHANGE YEARLY, THECOILS TO SPARK PLUGS, ETC. ALOT OF THINGS HAVE GONE WRONG. IT HAS ABOUT 82,000 MILES. IT'S OVERHEATING, SHAKING, MY ENGINE IS BURNING ALL THE COOLANT AND OIL AS SOON AS IT HITS THE ENGINE I CAN HEAR IT BOILING UNDER THE HOOD NOW AND IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE ANYMORE. I'VE HAD IT TOWED TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON,BUT I WAS TOLD THAT MY ENGINE IS SHOT AND HE HAS NO EXPLANATION TO WHY EXCEPT THAT ITS BURNING ALL THE FLUIDS PUT IN IT EVERYTHING ELSE LOOKS FINE AND IS NEW THANKS TO ME BECAUSE I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT AND REALLY TO FIND OUT THERE IS NOTHING I COULD DO ABOUT IT. A WIRING HARNESS IN MY 2002 JEEP LIBERTY FAILS EVERY YEAR OR SO - THIS DISABLES THE ABS BRAKES AND CAUSES THE SPEEDOMETER TO WANDER AND BE INACCURATE. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE HARNESS 3 TIMES (OUT OF WARRANTY) AT A COST OF ABOUT $200 EACH TIME. MY ABS SYSTEM IS DISABLED FROM THE TIME THE HARNESS FAILS UNTIL I GET IT FIXED. THE ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATE ON THE DASH WHEN IT FAILS - AND STAYS ON UNTIL THE REPAIR IS DONE. *TR

PASSENGER SIDE REAR WINDOW REGULATOR FAILED, CAUSING WINDOW TO SLIDE DOWN INTO DOOR. *KB
ON DEC 8, 2008 I PICKED UP MY JEEP LIBERTY FROM MY MECHANIC, HE HAD REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN THAT RUSTED OUT AND DRAINED ALL THE TRANSMISSION OIL OUT. ON JANUARY 6, 2009 ON MY WAY TO WORK EARLY IN THE MORNING THE TRANSMISSION BLEW OUT TOTALLY, I WAS ABLE TO GET BACK HOME AND ONCE AGAIN THE MECHANIC HAS THE LIBERTY REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. I FEEL THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN RUSTING OUT AND LEAKING CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION BLOWOUT A MONTH LATER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID COME ON IN DECEMBER AND I HAD AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE ENGINE LOOKED AT WHEN THE WHOLE PAN BLEW OUT. THE TRANSMISSION TOTALLY DROPPING IN JANUARY COULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT IF I WERE DRIVING LATER, AND I FEEL THIS COULD CAUSE MAJOR ACCIDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS ACROSS THE NATION. I HAVE COMPLAINED VIA THE WEBPAGE AT JEEP TO NO AVAIL, THIS SHOULD BE AT LEAST A RECALL ON THESE VEHICLES. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY. THERE ARE TWO CYLINDERS UNDER THE HOOD THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE HOOD OPEN AFTER IT IS RAISED. MINE NO LONGER DO THAT. THIS COULD PRESENT A SERIOUS PROBLEM AS THE HOOD COULD SLAM DOWN UNTO ANYONE THAT MIGHT BE LOOKING UNDER THE HOOD. THE COMPLAINT THAT I'M CONTACTING YOU ABOUT, IS ABOUT VEHICLES THAT HAVE NON-ADJUSTABLE HEADLIGHTS. I OWN A 2002 JEEP LIBERTY WITH NON-ADJUSTABLE HEADLIGHTS. AFTER I PURCHASED MY JEEP BACK IN JULY, I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC TO GET THE HEADLIGHTS ADJUSTED BEING THAT ON A CLEAR NIGHT, VISIBILITY IS EXTREMELY POOR. I CAN ACTUALLY DRIVE WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON HIGH BEAM WITHOUT IMPAIRING ONCOMING DRIVERS VISION. MY MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THE HEADLIGHTS ON THE JEEP ARE NON-ADJUSTABLE. TONIGHT I DROVE IN LIGHT SNOW FLURRIES AND IT WAS LIKE I WAS DRIVING IN A SEVERE SNOW STORM. I'M A TRUCK DRIVER WITH 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE AND ALSO RECENTLY HAD TO DRIVE A 2006 FREIGHTLINER WITH NON-ADJUSTABLE HEADLIGHTS. THE HEADLIGHTS ON THIS TRUCK ACTUALLY FORMED AN ( X ) 20 FEET IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK. MEANING THAT THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT SHOWN TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE LEFT HEADLIGHT SHOWN TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD. JUST DRIVING IN RAIN, MY VISIBILITY WAS VERY POOR. THE RULE OF THUMB IS TO NOT TO OVERDRIVE YOUR HEADLIGHTS. WITH THE TRUCK, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING NO FASTER THAN 30 MPH AT NIGHTTIME AND MY JEEP ISN'T MUCH BETTER. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS. THE SEVERAL MECHANIC'S THAT I'VE SPOKE TO, HAVE INFORMED ME THAT A LOT OF MANUFACTURER'S ARE GOING TO THESE KIND OF HEADLIGHTS. I'M PLANNING ON PURCHASING DRIVING LIGHTS FOR MY JEEP, WHICH I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO. THANKS *TR

THE DRIVER THEN EXITED THE VEHICLE AND DISCOVERED THE TIRE WAS FOLDED UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER NOTICED A BROKEN PART THAT WAS LATER DETERMINED TO BE THE UPPER BALL JOINT. HAD THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED MAINTAINING VEHICLE CONTROL WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE CAUSING INJURY TO THE DRIVER OR TO OTHER MOTORISTS. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THIS VEHICLE RECEIVED A RECALL FOR A SIMILAR PART IN 11/2006, THE LOWER BALL JOINT. THIS RECALL AND ALL OTHER RECALLS HAD BEEN COMPLETED ACCORDING TO JEEP RECORDS. WHILE TOWING OUR 2002 JEEP LIBERTY LE BEHIND AN RV, WITH KEY IN THE FIRST CLICK POSITION, THE KEYS HAVE TWICE FALLEN OUT OF THE IGNITION SWITCH AND CAUSED THE FRONT WHEELS TO LOCK IN AN OTHER THAN STRAIGHT-AHEAD POSITION. THIS MEANS THE SWITCH HAS ROTATED, ON ITS OWN, TO THE OFF POSITION. IN THE FIRST INSTANCE, IN 2004, THERE WAS NO DAMAGE OTHER THAN SOME SCUFFING ON THE EDGES OF THE TIRES - DUE TO THE WHEELS BECOMING LOCKED IN AN ANGLED STATE. IN THE SECOND INSTANCE, IN 2008, THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY $2,300.00 DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE JEEP. CHRYSLER HAS BEEN CONTACTED, TWICE IN 2008, BUT STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE TIRE MANUFACTURER, RATHER THAN BY THE WHEELS LOCKING. THE OUTER SIDEWALL WAS SHREDDED AS I HAD TO DRIVE ABOUT A 1/4 MILE TO GET OFF THE ON RAMP TO A SAFE AREA TO CHANGE TIRE , INNER SIDEWALL SHOWED LITTLE DAMAGE. I RECALL HITTING OR RUNNING OVER NOTHING THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED ANY DAMAGE TO TIRE.
