TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE LOWER BALL JOINTS ON OCTOBER 26,2006 AND HAS BEEN PLACED ON TWO DIFFERENT WAITING LISTS. IT HAS BEEN NEARLY ONE YEAR SINCE THE NOTICE WAS RECEIVED AND SHE STILL HAS BEEN UNABLE TO GET HER VEHICLE SERVICED. SHE HAS BEEN TO TWO DEALERS AND THEY BOTH STATED THAT THEY ARE NOT RECEIVING THE SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF PARTS TO SATISFY THE HIGH DEMAND. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 58,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED NO PROBLEM HAD OCCURRED WITH THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL, # 06V288000, REGARDING THE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT. THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WERE NOT AVAILABLE AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THE MANUFACTURER CONFIRMED THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE.

THE SALES/SERVICE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THE VEHICLE WAS # 66 ON THE WAITING LIST, DUE TO THE DELAY IN GETTING REPLACEMENT PARTS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT ALERTED.

THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER ABOUT FIVE WEEKS AGO AND PUT HIS NAME ON A WAITING LIST, AND HE WAS TOLD IT WOULD TAKE AT LEAST ANOTHER MONTH. TL*- THE CONTACT RECEIVED RECALL 06V288000 ON 10/25/06, FOR 2003 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STOOK THE VEHICLE TO DAYTON JEEP, AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE PARTS AVAILABLE TO MAKE THE REPAIRS. THE DEALER DID NOT GIVE HER AN APPOINTMENT AT THAT TIME. THE CONTACTRIED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS TO GET AN APPOINTMENT ,AND THE DEALERSHIP STILL REFUSED TO SETUP T AN APPOINTMENT. ALSO, THE CONTACT WAS HAVING STEERING PROBLEMS DURING ALL TYPES OF WEATHER, ESPECIALLY UNDER RAINY CONDITIONS . *AK
TL* - THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE RECEIVED 06V288000 ON OCTOBER 25,2006 FOR HER 2003 JEEP LIBERTY. THE RECALL WAS FOR THE LOWER BALL JOINT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT 50 MPH THE VEHICLE VIBRATED AND THE STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT. THE DEALERSHIP IN HER AREA STATED THAT THEY WERE ONLY RECEIVING 3 BALL JOINTS PER WEEK. *AK
RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM DEALER BACK IN OCTOBER 2006 FOR FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS. CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND THEY SAID IT WOULD BE A LONG TIME TO GET THE PARTS AND THEN I HAD TO BE ON A WAIT LIST. HAD NOT HEARD BACK AS OF FEBRUARY 2007, SO I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND THEY SAID THE SAME THING AND THEY WOULD CALL ME WHEN THEY GOT THE PARTS. IT'S GOING ON 3+ MONTHS...I HAVE HAD THIS SAME RECALL IN THE PAST AND THEY WERE VERY PROMPT ABOUT IT. *NM
I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ON MY JEEP LIBERTY. UPON TAKING IT IN FOR A VIBRATION PROBLEM IN THE FRONT END, IT WAS DECIDED THE THE LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE IN BAD SHAPE. NO PARTS ARE AVAILBLE TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM FOR 3 TO 4 WEEK WAITING LIST. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED A NHTSA RECALL LETTER WAS RECEIVED # 03V460000 REGARDING THE SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR RECALL WORK, HOWEVER THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO PERFORM RECALL WORK ON A TIMELY MATTER DUE TO THE MANUFACTURER'S INABILITY TO RECEIVE SPARE PARTS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND CONFIRMED THE STATEMENTS MADE BY THE DEALER ADDING THAT THEY WERE AWAITING FOR 3500 BACK LOG PARTS FOR RECALL WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS CURRENTLY GOING ONTO THE 5TH WEEK OF THE WAITING LIST. UPDATED 12/15/2006 - THE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. *NM
TL* - THE CONTACT RECEIVED RECALL LETTER 06V288000 FOR THE LOWER BALL JOINTS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE CALLED THE DEALER ON OCTOBER 13, 2006 AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD ORDER THE PART. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER BACK 1/12/07 BECAUSE SHE WAS TOLD IT WOULD TAKE APPROXIMATELY 3 MONTHS TO GET THE PART, SHE WAS TOLD THAT THE PART HAD NOT BEEN ORDER. THE DEALER HAS TOLD THE CONTACT ONCE AGAIN THEY WILL CALL WHEN THE PART ARRIVES. THE VEHICLE HAS AN ODOMETER READING OF 54,146 MILES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE DRIVER APPLIES THE BRAKES OR WHEN THE STEERING IS TURNED LEFT OR RIGHT THERE IS A VIBRATION. *NM

THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALERSHIP IN HER AREA, AND THEY STATED THAT IT COULD TAKE 4 MONTHS IN ORDER FOR THEM TO SET UP THE RECALL SERVICE. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE HAVING RECALL WORK#06V288000 REGARDING SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINT PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE, THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE FRONT AXLES AND BOTH WHEEL BEARINGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE LEFT AXLE WAS REPAIRED, AND WHEN THE FRONT RIGHT AXLE WAS BEING REPAIRED, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE BOLTS IN THE AXLE WERE SHEARED AND A LOT OF RUST WAS PRESENT. THERE WAS NO SHAKING OR VIBRATION PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. A REPRESENTATIVE AT THE DEALERSHIP EXPRESSED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DETERMINED THAT ONLY 1 HOUR WOULD BE GIVEN TO THE DEALER'S MECHANICS TO FIX BOTH SIDES. THE VEHICLE WAS INOPERABLE AND WAS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER.

REAR WINDOW DRIVER'S SIDE FELL DOWN - WINDOW REGULATOR REPLACED (2006). REAR WINDOW PASSENGER SIDE FELL DOWN- WINDOW REGULATOR REPLACED (2008). REAR WINDOW PASSENGER SIDE FELL DOWN - WINDOW REGULATOR REPLACED (2009 PART UNDER WARRANTY). REAR WINDOW DRIVER'S SIDE FELL DOWN- WINDOW REGULATOR NOT YET REPLACED (2009). NO OLD PARTS AVAILABLE EXCEPT ONE THAT HAS YET TO BE REPLACED. CONTACTED CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE IN AUBURN HILLS, MI AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME. I ASKED IF THERE WERE ANY RECORDS OF DEFECT FOR THIS PART OR IF ANY OTHER OWNERS HAD SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY DON'T KEEP THOSE SORT OF RECORDS. SINCE THIS TIME I HAVE COME IN CONTACT WITH 3 PARTIES THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS PART (FAULTY WINDOW REGULATOR) I BELIEVE THERE ARE MANY MORE THAT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS PART AND THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS AND REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS ALREADY COMPLETED (BY DEALER OR OTHER). *TR
NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET,THAT'S THE PROBLEM. I CALLED A LOCAL JEEP DEALER WHEN I GOT THE NOTICE FOR THE RECALL ON MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY,THAT WAS IN SEPTEMBER '06,I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD RECEIVE A CALL IN 1-2 WEEKS WHEN THE PARTS WERE IN,WELL,IT'S ALMOST 2 MONTHS LATER AND STILL NO CALL. *JB
RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE ON MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY ON 9/15/2006. RECALL PARTS WERE ORDERED THROUGH CARBONE IN YORKVILLE, NY. TO DATE THE PARTS HAVE NOT COME IN FROM CHRYSLER. CARBONE KEEPS TELLING ME I WILL GET A NOTICE NEXT WEEK WHEN THE PARTS COME IN. *NM
TL*- THE CONTACT STATED RECEIVED RECALL 06V288000 ON 09/2006 FOR A 2003 JEEP LIBERTY RECALL ON LOWER BALL JOINTS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AS OF TODAY SHE STILL HADN'T RECEIVED THE REPAIRS ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS HAVING STEERING PROBLEMS, AND WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE UNDER THE HOOD. SHE HAD CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, AND THEY STATED THAT THE PART WAS STILL NOT IN. THE DEALERSHIP HAD INFORMED HER THAT THERE WAS A LONG WAITING LIST, AND SINCE SHE HADN'T PURCHASE THE VEHICLE FROM THAT PARTICULAR DEALERSHIP, SHE MAY HAVE TO WAIT A LITTLE LONGER. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50000. THERE HAS BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE.*AK
2003 LIBERTY BECAME DETACHED FROM TRAILER WHEN THE NUT SECURING THE BALL CAME OFF. *TS THE U-HAUL TRAILER CRASHED INTO A WALL. NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE. *JB
RECALL BALL JOINT WORK CARRIED OUT TO JEEP LIBERTY, AT APPROX 10,000 MILES. BALL JOINT FAILED AT 24,000 MILES FRONT END COLLAPSED WHILST WIFE DRIVING VEHICLE WITH 2 CHILDREN AS PASSENGERS, DAMAGING DRIVE SHAFT, WHEEL AND TIRE. JEEP WILL HAVE MY VEHICLE FOR 6 WEEKS DUE TO AVAILABILITY OF PARTS. BUT THEY ARE FIXING IT. *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE NUMBER 03V460000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT) IN SEPTEMBER OF 2006. HE STATED THAT THE NOISE COMING FROM THE FAILURE CAUSED DISTRESS TO HIS FAMILY, WHICH ESCALATED INTO ARGUMENTS. HE FURTHER STATED THAT THE NOISE LEVEL OF THE BALL JOINTS WAS UNBEARABLE. HE NOTIFIED A LOCAL AND NATIONAL JEEP DEALER, BUT THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO ANY OF HIS CALLS. THE RECALL WAS NEVER REPAIRED DUE TO THE UNAVAILABILITY OF PARTS. THE LENGTHY WAITING LIST PLACED HIM THREE MONTHS BEHIND FROM HIS ORIGINAL APPOINTMENT DATE. THE VEHICLE HAS SINCE BEEN SOLD. THE FAILURE SPEED WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 60,000.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THERE WAS EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL, # 03V46000, REGARDING THE FRONT SUSPENSION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY A DEALER, THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED. UPDATED 09/13/06. *JB
TL*-THE CONTACT HAS A 2003 JEEP LIBERTY THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH THE BALL JOINTS. THE DEALERSHIP IS INFORMING HER THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS IN STOCK. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE PARTS ARE IN BACK ORDER. IT HAS BEEN 3 WEEKS SINCE THE CLIENT HAS HEARD FROM THE DEALERSHIP.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 45MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, BOTH FRONTAL AIRBAGS DEPLOYED WITHOUT WARNING. THIS OCCURRED WITHOUT CAUSING A CRASH AND NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER TO AWAIT INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 3 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED AND A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD OR BACKWARD. A PRIVATE MECHANIC WAS CONSULTED, WHO DETERMINED THE FRONT LEFT WHEEL HAD DETACHED DUE TO A SEPARATION OF THE FRONT LEFT BALL JOINT. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO A SERVICE DEALER. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL # 03V460000 WHICH PERTAINED TO THE LOWER BALL JOINT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. UPDATED 9/5/2006 - *NM
ON AUGUST 11, 2006 WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, MY JEEP LIBERTY BEGAN TO SWAY. I PROCEEDED TO SLOW WHEN MY REAR AXLE INCLUDING WHEELS FELL OFF. NO WARNING, THE ENTIRE REAR AXLE DISASSEMBLED. THE CONDITIONS THAT NIGHT WERE WET, HOWEVER THERE WAS NOTHING MORE THAN THAT. I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED CHRYSLER MECHANIC. I INQUIRED TO WHAT WOULD CAUSE THE REAR AXLE TO JUST FALL APART THIS WAY. I WAS INFORMED IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE IMPACT? THERE WAS NO IMPACT WHICH WAS EVIDENT BY THE CONDITION OF MY VEHICLE. MY VEHICLE HAD TO BE REPAIRED. THE LEFT REAR CONTROL ARM AND DRIVESHAFT HAD TO BE REPAIRED AND REINSTALLED IN ADDITION TO THE REAR END ASM AND LEFT WHEEL AND TIRE REPLACED. *JB
PARKING BRAKE IN PLACE WHILE GOING INTO STORE NOT WORKING PROPERLY CAUSED VEHICLE TO ROLL DOWN STREET CAUSING A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. ALSO WHILE IN VEHICLE STOP LEVEL SURFACE PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL CAR ROLLED 3-4 FEET. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE FRONT END WAS PULLING AND SWAYING BADLY TO THE RIGHT AND THE LEFT AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. TWICE THE LOWER BALL JOINTS WAS REPLACED. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN NOVEMBER 2004 UNDER RECALL # 03V460000; SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINT. THE SECOND TIME WAS IN JUNE 2005. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A ROUTINE BRAKE INSPECTION AND THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THE BALL JOINTS WERE SO BAD THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DRIVEN UNTIL THE BALL JOINTS WERE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE BEGAN PULLING AND SWAYING TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT AT VARIOUS SPEEDS FOR THE THIRD TIME. THE DEALERSHIP DIRECTED THE CONTACT TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION.
BOTH FRONT LOWER BALL JOINTS SHOW EXCESSIVE WEAR AND "PLAY" TO THE POINT WHERE THE AUTHORIZED JEEP DEALERSHIP INDICATED THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. *JB
2003 JEEP LIBERTY, LEFT LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATED CAUSING WHEEL TO NEARLY SEPARATE FROM VEHICLE. VEHICLE REPAIRED BY CHRYSLER. SINCE REPAIR THERE HAS BEEN LOUD NOISE WHEN STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. BROUGHT BACK TO REPAIR FACILITY TO BE INSPECTED. INFORMED THAT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS CRACKED CAUSING FAILURE. THIS SEEMS TO BE RELATED TO ANOTHER MATERIAL DEFECT AS THE CONTROL ARM SLEEVES ARE PRESSED AS WERE THE BALL JOINTS. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER AND THEY STATED THERE IS NO RECALL AT THIS TIME. THE VEHICLE IS THREE YEARS OLD AND FOR TWO MAJOR MATERIAL FAILURES AT THE SAME TIME SEEMS TO BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM. IS THERE ANY OTHERS WHO HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS PROBLEM? *JB
2003 JEEP LIBERTY MAKING A TERRIBLE GRINDING NOISE. CUSTOMER STATES THAT THE GRINDING NOISE IS LOUD AND SOUNDS LIKE METAL SCRAPING METAL. CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE SOUND WAS FROM THE REAR BRAKES. *KB THE CONSUMER STATED THE REAR BRAKES WERE REPLACED AND THE NOISE WENT AWAY FOR A FEW WEEKS, BUT THEN IT RETURNED. AN ANTI-SQUEAL COMPOUND WAS APPLIED TO THE REAR BRAKES AND AGAIN, THE NOISE WENT AWAY FOR A FEW WEEKS. THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY WORN ROTORS ON THE REAR BRAKES AND IN ORDER FOR THE PROBLEM TO BE CORRECTED, THE REAR ROTORS AND THE REAR PARK SHOES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *JB
WHILE DRIVING DOWN A ROAD, THE BALL JOINT ON THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE BROKE MAKING THE VEHICLE UNDRIVEABLE AND TEARING UP MY WHEEL. LUCKILY, MY SON WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE MAIN ROAD AND CALL FOR HELP. THIS VEHICLE WAS A 2003 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT WHICH I BOUGHT IN OCTOBER, 2005. THIS INCIDENT LEFT ME WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION TO WORK DUE TO THE UNCOOPERATIVE STAFF AT THE DEALERSHIP AND THE MAIN JEEP CONSUMER OFFICE. THE GARAGE HAULED THE VEHICLE TO REPAIR BUT INSISTED ONLY REPAIRING THE JOINT THAT HAD BROKE. WHEN I ASKED FOR A NUMBER TO CONTACT THE MAIN JEEP COMPANY, I WAS TOLD THIS DEALERSHIP HAD NO SUCH NUMBER. I FEEL THIS WAS A LIE BECAUSE THE NEXT DAY I WAS ABLE TO ACQUIRE A NUMBER FROM ANOTHER DEALERSHIP IN OUR AREA. I HAVE REQUESTED BOTH BOTTOM BALL JOINTS BE REPLACED BUT SO FAR HAVE BEEN DENIED. I AM TRYING TO PROTECT MY FAMILY FROM HAVING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND FEEL EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THAT IT HAS NOT ALREADY HAPPENED. *NM
I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN IN A PARKING LOT AT APPROX 5 MPH WHEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATED. AT THIS POINT I WAS UNABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE, AND WAS FORCED TO STOP IN THE LOT ENTRANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP AND REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD THE BALL JOINT RECALL WORK PERFORMED. *NM
AS I MADE A RIGHT TURN AT 5 MPH, I HEARD A LOUD BANG AND THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT WHEEL LOCKED UP. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER OR DRIVE THE CAR. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE CRASHED. THE LOWER BALL JOINT HAD FAILED, DIGGING INTO THE WHEEL. THE WHEEL ACTUALLY SEPARATED FROM THE CAR AS WE WERE REMOVING THE CAR FROM THE TOW TRUCK. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM 2 OR 3 YEARS AGO, AND I HAD THE RECALL WORK DONE AT THAT TIME. HOWEVER, IT STILL FAILED SO THE RECALL WORK WAS INEFFECTIVE. THE DAMAGE WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE DEALER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO ASSURE ME THAT THE REPAIR WILL PREVENT THE PROBLEM FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. ACCORDING TO DISCUSSIONS AT JEEPSUNLIMITED.COM, OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME FAILURE EVEN AFTER HAVING THE RECALL WORK DONE. *JB
AFTER PURCHASING THE 03 JEEP LIBERTY 4X4. I WAS MADE AWARE OF THE LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE. I JUST HAD MINE CHECKED BECAUSE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED. WITH 27,000 MILES ON IT, IT HAD ALREADY HAD NEW BALL JOINTS ADDED TO IT. THIS MAKE ME NERVOUS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. I HEARD THEY GO OUT EASILY AND YOU MUST CHECK THESE LOWER BALL JOINTS OFTEN. THIS IS JUST POOR ENGINEERING, AND FOR MY FAMILY, JUST MAKES FOR AN UNEASY, SORT OF A HOSTILE DRIVING ENVIRONMENT, DUE TO CONSTANT NERVOUSNESS. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT A RECALL LETTER WAS RECEIVED IN REGARDS TO THE LOWER FRONT BALL JOINTS. THE DEALER REPLACED THE PART WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART. THE VEHICLE SOON EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS WHEN THE BALL JOINTS FAILED CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE AXLE WHILE TRAVELING 40 MPH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND AN INVESTIGATOR WAS SENT TO EXAMINE THE VEHICLE. THE INVESTIGATOR DETERMINED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WOULD ONLY COVER THE RECALL REPAIRS FOR THE BALL JOINTS BUT NO DAMAGES THAT WERE CAUSED BY THE DEFECT.
I NOTICED A GRINDING NOISE IN THE FRONT OF MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY LIMITED 4WD ON FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2006. I DROVE THE NEXT DAY TO A FRIEND'S HOUSE, JULY 8. AS I WAS BACK UP TO PARK THE CAR STALLED A LITTLE AND BEGAN A GRINDING NOISE. AS I PULLED BACK THE LEFT WHEEL POPPED OUT. *JB
2003 LIBERTY BALL JOINT BROKE WHILE OUT OF TOWN. *TS ONE YEAR PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE A BALL JOINT BROKE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. *NM
STEERING RACK FAILURE. NEAR MISS COLLISION. LOSS TOTAL CONTROL OF VEHICLE. CONSEQUENCES COULD BE A FATALITY. SMITHFIELD JEEP DENIED THE INCIDENT TO DEFECTIVE PARTS A RECALL AND WOULD NOT PAY FOR THE REPAIR OF A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. *JB
AT 20000 MILES A RECALL REPLACEMENT WAS PERFORMED ON OUR 2003 JEEP LIBERTY. AT 53000 MILES WE HAD THE DEALER INSPECT THE FRONT END OF THE JEEP AND PROCLAIM IT WAS WITHIN SPECIFICATION. AT 54000 MILES, WILE TURNING IN TO MY DRIVE AT 5 MPH. THE LOWER LEFT BALL JOINT POPPED OUT AND JAMMED INTO THE BACK OF THE WHEEL. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BALL JOINTS UNDER THE RECALL. IN APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES THE JOINT WENT FROM SOUND TO SO BAD IT POPPED OUT! AT HIGHER SPEEDS THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. *JB
1. REALLY NOTHING LEAD UP TO FAILURE, IT WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF MY LOWER BALL JOINTS. THANK GOD WE WERE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED AND NOT AT 70 MPH. 2. BASICALLY MY LEFT FRONT TIRE COLLAPSED, CAUSING ME TO CALL FLATBED TOW TRUCK, FRONT WHEEL FENDER DAMAGE AND OVER $500 IN REPAIRS TO JUST THE LOWER BALL JOINT. 3. CHRYSLER WILL NOT DO AN INVESTIGATION, BECAUSE REPAIRS WERE DONE. I WAS STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF N.D. THEY SAID THEY WOULD COVER THE BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT. I HAVE THE OLD BALL JOINTS, ONE EXHIBITS CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND THE OTHER HAS THE TELL-TALE LUBRICANT LOSS DESCRIBED IN THE REPORT. NOTE--I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR THE RECALL AND HAD WORK DONE. EVIDENTLY THE BALL JOINTS WERE NOT REPLACED, BUT THE HEAT SHIELD WAS INSTALLED. *JB
MY SIX-YEAR-OLD CLIMBED INTO THE FRONT SEAT OF MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY AND WITHOUT THE KEY OR STEPPING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL MOVED THE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR FROM PARK TO SOME OTHER GEAR CAUSING IT TO ROLL DOWN A DRIVEWAY WHERE PEOPLE WERE. WITH GREAT FORTUNE, NO ONE WAS STRUCK OR INJURED BUT WHEN THE CAR SILENTLY ROLLED AWAY THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC. THIS PROBLEM WAS REPEATABLE. WITHOUT THE KEY TURNED FORWARD, THE TRANSMISSION CAN BE MOVED FROM PARK WITHOUT STEPPING ON THE BRAKE. WITH THE KEY FORWARD, IT FUNCTIONS PROPERLY. JEEP REPORTED NO RECALLS AND WAS WILLING TO FIX UNDER WARRANTY. *JB
I PURCHASED MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY FROM CENTRAL FLORIDA CHRYSLER/JEEP IN JANUARY OF 2004. I NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER AND THE DEALER DID NOT FIX THE BALL JOINTS BEFORE HE SOLD THE VEHICLE TO ME. IF IT IS TRUE THAT A RECALL TOOK PLACE IN 2003 I WOULD ASSUME THIS MATTER WOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF. HOWEVER, ON THE NIGHT OF JULY 1, AT 1AM I WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN IN THE JEEP LIBERTY, AND PROCEEDING AT ABOUT 25 MPH WHEN THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE DROPPED AND THE STEERING WENT CRAZY. THE LIBERTY VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND HIT AN ELECTRICAL POLE AND CONTINUED INTO A FENCE. THE JEEP LIBERTY WAS TOTALED, FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INJURIES. AT THE TIME I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL HAD HAPPENED. NOW I KNOW. *NM
REAR WINDOW REGULATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE. THE REPAIR FACILITY NO LONGER WILL REPAIR/REPLACE THE REGULATOR, SINCE THE DEALER NO LONGER WILL ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY AND REFUSES TO WARRANTY THE REGULATOR. THE REGULATOR OBVIOUSLY IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT, BUT CHRSYLER/JEEP IS NOT BEING HELD RESPONSIBLE, THEREFORE CONTINUES TO CHARGE THE CONSUMER FOR NEW REPLACEMENTS. THE FIRST REPLACEMENT WAS IN 2006, THE SECOND IN 2007, AND IS CURRENTLY HELD IN PLACE BY WIRE. I CANNOT AFFORD TO CONTINUE REPLACING A DEFECTIVE PART. *TR
2003 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT - LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATED FROM KNUCKLE WHILE DRIVING ON 6/24/06. NOTE: RECALL NOTICE ON LOWER BALL JOINTS RECEIVED JUNE 2004 AND REPAIR/INSPECTION IN RESPONSE TO RECALL NOTICE WAS COMPLETED 6/30/04 (LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED AND HEAT SHIELD INSTALLED) AT CROSS CHRYSLER JEEP IN LOUISVILLE, KY. FAILURE STILL OCCURRED AFTER RECALL REPAIR. NEW REPAIRS COMPLETED ON 6/30/06 AT NEIL HUFFMAN CHRYSLER/DODGE JEEP IN LOUISVILLE, KY- LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED AGAIN. ONE (1) WHEEL AND ONE (1) AXLE ALSO REPLACED DUE TO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AS A RESULT OF LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE. *JB
WHILE TURNING RIGHT AT AN INTERSECTION AT ABOUT 5 MILES PER HOUR IN MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY, I EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE LOWER BALL JOINT ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THE BALL JOINT DROPPED AND THE BOLT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BALL JOINT STRUCK AND SEVERELY DUG INTO THE ALLOY WHEEL. THIS ALL TOOK PLACE AT TRAVELING ABOUT 5 MILES PER HOUR AND TRAVELING ONLY ABOUT 20 FEET. I JUST HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY FOR REPAIR. NO REPAIRS HAVE YET BEEN MADE. *NM
ON 6/22/06 MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE ON BOTH SIDES. DEALER IS REPLACING THEM UNDER WARRANTY. I HAVE APPROXIMATELY 54,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THESE LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE REPLACED UNDER A RECALL SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH JEEP LIBERTY'S (SEE WWW.LOSTKJS.COM FOR MANY FAILURE REPORTS). *JB
