WHEN THE CONTACT INFORMED THE MANUFACTURER OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF BEING ON AN ISLAND, 800 MILES AWAY FROM THE CLOSEST SERVICE DEALER, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE USE OF AN INDEPENDENT SERVICE DEALER WOULD NOT BE APPROVED FOR THE RECALL REPAIR.

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER 2003 JEEP LIBERTY IN TRAFFIC APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT. SHE BUMPED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER TRAVELING AT ABOUT 10 MPH. IT WAS SUCH A MINOR BUMP THAT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE BURST INTO FLAMES FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT SHE BARELY HAD ENOUGH TIME TO ESCAPE. THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS AND THE CAR IS COMPLETELY BURNT OUT INSIDE. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE NHTSA RECALL #06V288000, REGARDING THE LOWER BALL JOINTS WOULD TAKE TEN DAYS FOR THE SERVICE DEALER TO OBTAIN THE PARTS. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED THIS WAS TOO LONG TO WAIT FOR SUCH A SAFETY ISSUE TO BE ADDRESSED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS UNABLE TO ASSIST THE CONTACT TO GET THE WORK DONE ANY QUICKER.

RECEIVED A F23 SAFETY RECALL NOTICE 11/13/06. CALLED STIVER JEEP IN LEXINGTON, SC TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO BRING 2003 LIBERTY IN. THEY PUT ME ON A WAITING LIST OF APPROXIMATELY 3 - 4 WEEKS. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. I CALLED SALUDA MOTOR SALES IN SALUDA, SC, AND THEY WILL FIX MY CAR ON MONDAY, 11/20. THE MAN AT STIVERS TALKED AS THOUGH THIS RECALL IS NO BIG DEAL. IT IS A BIG DEAL. MY PREGNANT DAUGHTER IS DRIVING THIS CAR EVERYDAY. *NM
I WAS CONTACTED BY DAIMLER CHRYSLER REGARDING A SAFETY RECALL (F23) FOR LOWER BALL JOINTS ON MY 2003 JEEP LIBERTY. I FOLLOWED THE RECALL DIRECTIONS AND CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER (STEVE WHITE MOTORS) TO SCHEDULE A REPAIR. I WAS TOLD THAT MY REPAIR WOULD NEED TO WAIT 10 WEEKS DUE TO THE RATIONING OF REPAIR PARTS TO THE DEALERS BY DAIMLER CHRYSLER. I THEN CONTACTED THE "HELP" NUMBER FOR DAIMLER CHRYSLER PROVIDED BY THEM ON THE RECALL NOTICE. I WAS TOLD THAT ASIDE FROM HAVING MY VEHICLE INSPECTED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THERE WASN'T ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WITHIN A 20 MILE RADIUS FROM MY HOME, NOR COULD THEY PROVIDE THE REPAIR PART ANY SOONER. THE RECALL NOTICE INDICATES THAT THE FAULT IN THE PART "CAN CAUSE THE BALL JOINT TO...SEPARATE. BALL JOINT SEPARATION CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING." AND NOW I'M TOLD TO WAIT 2 AND 1/2 MONTHS BEFORE THIS CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED. THAT'S 2 AND 1/2 MONTHS OF JEOPARDIZING MY WIFE'S AND MY SAFETY. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ME AND SHOULD BE TO BOTH DAIMLER CHRYSLER AND YOU. *JB

I HAVE A 2003 JEEP LIBERTY FOR WHICH I HEARD RE: RECALL SOME MONTHS BACK. I INQUIRED AT MY DEALERSHIP IN AUG ( GREENBRIAR JEEP) AND WAS TOLD I WOULD GET A NOTICE. WELL, I DID RECEIVE NOTICE 11/12. WHEN I CALLED DEALER TODAY 11/13, I WAS TOLD THEY DID NOT HAVE PARTS, AND THE PARTS WERE ALREADY 2 WEEKS BEHIND. IF THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THERE SHOULD BE ENOUGH REPAIR KITS FOR ALL VEHICLES INVOLVED. IS THERE ANYWAY OF EXPEDITING THIS REPAIR? ON 11/09/06, THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED WHO DETERMINED THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO BE PUT ON A WAITING LIST BECAUSE THE REPLACEMENT PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED THAT SAME DAY, WHO OFFERED THAT THERE COULD BE OTHER DEALERS WITH SHORTER WAITING LISTS. THE CONTACT WAS GIVEN A LIST OF OTHER DEALERS IN THE AREA. TL*-THE CONTACT RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL IN NOVEMBER AND THE DRAWLER HAS NOT SCHEDULE THE REPAIRS. HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE TIME IT'S TAKING THE DRAWLER TO ADDRESS THE RECALL.

TWO DEALERSHIPS WERE CONTACTED TO ASK IF THE ALIGNMENT AFTER PERFORMING THE BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT WAS INCLUDED. THE DEALERSHIP REPRESENTATIVES STATED THE ALIGNMENT WAS CONSIDERED VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AS SUCH WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL REMEDY. IF THE ALIGNMENT WERE NOT PERFORMED THE TIRES WOULD RAPIDLY WEAR OFF AND ITS REPLACEMENT WOULD ALSO BE REQUIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO COINCIDED WITH THE DEALERSHIPS STATEMENT. THE CONTACT CONSIDERED THE RECALL REMEDY INSUFFICIENT BECAUSE THE MISALIGNMENT WAS A CONSEQUENCE OF MANUFACTURER DEFECT.

THE SERVICE DEALER WAS CONTACTED, WHO SUGGESTED THAT THE PARTS DEPARTMENT NEEDED TO ORDER THE PART. THE PARTS DEPARTMENT EXPRESSED TO THE CONTACT THAT THE RECALL PARTS WERE ON BACK ORDER, AND IT WOULD TAKE 4 TO 5 MONTHS TO GET THE PART. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED CONCERN BECAUSE THE DEFECTIVE PART COULD CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF THE LOWER BALL JOINT FRACTURED. THE CONTACT PLANNED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER AFTER FILING A COMPLAINT WITH THE NHTSA.

THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THEY WOULD NOT AUTHORIZE SERVICE AT AN INDEPENDENT DEALER OR REIMBURSE FOR THE PART IF THE INDEPENDENT DEALER WAS USED ALTHOUGH ANOTHER SERVICE DEALER COULD BE CONTACTED TO FIND A SHORTER WAITING LIST.

THE MANUFACTURER TOLD HIM THAT ONLY 4 LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE SENT TO THE DEALERSHIP PER WEEK, AND HE FELT THAT HE SHOULD BE ON THE TOP OF THE WAITING LIST BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS USED FOR GOVERNMENT PURPOSES EACH DAY. *AK

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT AT 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED. THE VEHICLE RESTARTED, THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS PLACED INTO DRIVE, BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF AND TURNED BACK ON 4 TIMES, BEFORE IT WAS ABLE TO MOVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AFTER PERFORMING A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT ALL 4 TIRES WERE WORN DOWN UNEVENLY AND THERE WERE PIECES OF METAL SHOWING ON THE INSIDES OF THE TIRES. ALSO, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKES AND REAR ROTORS WERE WORN, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, ALONG WITH ALL 4 TIRES. A NHTSA RECALL LETTER, #06V288000 ON THE VEHICLE, REGARDING THE SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINT WAS RECEIVED. THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WERE NOT AVAILABLE AT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THE MANUFACTURER CONFIRMED THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT WAS PLACED ON A WAITLIST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO SUGGESTED THAT THE RECALL WORK SHOULD BE PERFORMED PRIOR TO GETTING ALL THE OTHER COMPONENTS REPLACED.

AFTER A RECALL (DAIMLER CHRYSLER SAFETY RECALL F23) OF MY JEEP LIBERTY FOR DEFECTIVE FRONT BALL JOINTS, I CALLED MY DEALER TO SCHEDULE A REPAIR FOR NEXT WEEK. MY DEALER TOLD ME THAT, BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED SUPPLY OF REPAIR PARTS FROM DAIMLER CHRYSLER (3 TO 5 SETS OF BALL JOINTS A WEEK TO A LARGE DEALERSHIP), I WOULD BE PUT ON A WAITING LIST AND MIGHT BE CALLED IN FOR THE REPAIRS IN THE NEXT 2 MONTHS OR MORE. ACCORDING TO THE RECALL NOTICE, BALL JOINT FAILURE "CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING". DAIMLER CHRYSLER MUST PROVIDE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS IMMEDIATELY. *JB

THE CONTACT HAS BEEN WAITING SINCE NOVEMBER OF 2006, AND HAD NOT RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP. THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURES TO DATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 73,000.
WE HAD THE RECALL(BALL JOINTS) DONE ON OUR JEEP LIBERTY BACK IN 03. THEN ON 10/03/06 WE HAD IT BACK IN THE SHOP FOR STIFFNESS IN THE STEERING; WE WERE TOLD THE BALL JOINTS WERE FINE, AND THAT IT COULD BE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND RACK AND PINION. ON 10/31/06, THE BALL JOINTS BROKE OFF WHILE DRIVING RESULTING IN MAJOR MECHANICAL DAMAGE TO OUR JEEP!!! IF THIS IS A RECALL ON THE FIRST RECALL, WHY SHOULD WE FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AFTER WE GET IT BACK? HOW DO WE KNOW ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN? PLEASE GIVE US SOME INPUT. *NM

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE STEERING PULLED TO THE RIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT DEALER TO BALANCE AND ROTATE THE TIRES. ABNORMAL WEAR WAS FOUND ON THE TIRES THAT HAD BEEN PURCHASED IN 08/2006. FOUR SEPARATE SERVICE DEALERS WERE CONTACTED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT, AFTER RECEIVING RECALL F23, FOR THE SUSPENSION: FRONT CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINTS. EACH SERVICE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT OF THE BACK ORDER OF PARTS AND OFFERED TO ADD THE VEHICLE TO A WAIT LIST. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT PARTS WERE ON HAND, FOR IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT.

I CONTACTED MY DEALER AND WAS TOLD THERE WOULD BE AN UNSPECIFIED DELAY IN ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE BECAUSE PARTS WERE NOT BEING RECEIVED IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITY BY THE DEALER. I WAS 26 ON THE RECALL LIST ON OCT. 30. I CONTACTED DAIMLER CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY CONTACTED THE DEALER AND I WAS TOLD REPAIR WOULD BE MADE IN ABOUT 3 WEEKS. I CONTACTED THE DEALER TODAY AND WAS TOLD ONLY 8 PARTS KITS HAD THUS FAR BEEN RECEIVED. I AGAIN CONTACTED DC AND WAS TOLD THAT MY ONLY RECOURSE WAS TO WORK WITH THE DEALER. AS THIS RECALL IS DESCRIBED AS RESULTING IN A LOSS OF STEERING IF A FAILURE OCCURS, I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFE OPERATION WHILE AWAITING REPAIR. THIS RECALL STATES THAT "BALL JOINT SEPARATION CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING". TRYING TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM REVEALED THERE WOULD BE AN 8 WEEK WAIT BECAUSE THE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. I LEARNED FROM THE DEALER (AND LATER VERIFIED BY CALLING DAIMLER CHRYSLER AT 1.800.853.1403) THAT DAIMLER CHRYSLER IS MAKING ONLY 3 REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE TO DEALERS PER WEEK! IF THIS IS SUCH A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION, DOESN'T DAIMLER CHRYSLER HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO MAKE MORE PARTS AVAILABLE TO DEALERS OF THEIR DEFECTIVE CARS? I UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A LOT OF CARS, BUT THAT DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT I AM DRIVING A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE WHICH I WILL HAVE TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE FOR ANOTHER 8 WEEKS. THEY STATED THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS CURRENTLY LIMITED TO 3 PARTS PER WEEK. THEREFORE THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE FOR 3 TO 4 WEEKS BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING LIMITED BY THE MANUFACTURER. RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE ON JEEP LIBERTY ON OCTOBER 27,2006 AND BEGAN CALLING DEALERSHIPS FOR INFORMATION AND TO SCHEDULE A REPAIR. THIS WAS AFTER CALLING DAIMLER CHRYSLER FOR NAMES OF DEALER SINCE OURS HAD GONE OUT OF BUSINESS. I CALLED FOUR DEALERSHIPS WITHIN MY DRIVING AREA (35MILES) NOT ONE OF THEM OFFERED TO TAKE MY NAME, NUMBER OR ANY OTHER INFORMATION. I WAS TOLD ABOUT THE PARTS BEING ON BACK ORDER AND TO CALL BACK IN A WEEK OR 2. THIS IS WHAT I DID AND AGAIN WAS TOLD THE SAME I AGAIN CALLED D/C AND THE CUSTOMER REP TOLD ME AGAIN ABOUT THE PARTS BEING BACK ORDERED AND THAT EACH DEALER ONLY RECEIVED 1-2 A WEEK, THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE SHE COULD DO. WELL I HAVE BEEN CALLING EVERY WEEK SINCE FRIDAY THE 27TH OF OCTOBER AND FINALLY ON THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30TH A SERVICE PERSON WAS WILLING TO TAKE MY NAME AND PUT IT ON A WAITING LIST. BUT MY QUESTION IS FOR HOW LONG? THE PARTS MANAGER INFORMED THE CONTACT THERE WERE OTHERS WAITING FOR THE REPAIRS AND THE CONTACT WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT ALERTED.
