TL* - THE CONTACT RECEIVED RECALL LETTER 06V288000 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE LOWER BALL JOINT ON A 2004 CHRYSLER JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT HAS BEEN TOLD THAT THEY WILL NOT HAVE THE PART AVAILABLE UNTIL APRIL. THE VEHICLE HAS 34,000 MILES. THE ENGINE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN BY CONTACT. THERE HAS BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE. *JB
IDENTICAL SITUATION TO CASE # 10091230. WHILE DRIVING ON A WET ROAD FROM PREVIOUS DAYS RAIN MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY LOST CONTROL WHILE TRAVELING OUT OF A TURN AT 20 MPH AND WENT OFF THE ROAD DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND CRASHING INTO A TREE. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE REVERSING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY AT 3 MPH, THE PASSENGER FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT FRACTURED AND BROKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED INTO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIR. UPDATED 3/9/2006 - *NM
WHILE DRIVING FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT CAME LOOSE ON MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT...DID NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED...PULLED INTO GARAGE...VEHICLE WOULD NOT DRIVE ANY FURTHER...WENT TO BACK VEHICLE OUT OF GARAGE NEXT DAY...FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT BECAME COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM WHATEVER IT IS ATTACHED TO...VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP TO BE FIXED...HAD TO HAVE NEW WHEEL, LOWER BALL JOINT, AND FRONT AXLE REPLACED...COST WAS ROUGHLY $2000 TO FIX. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THERE WAS A CREAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE WHEEL AREA. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED BOTH LOWER BALL JOINTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. UPDATED 3/3/2006 - *NM
I RECENTLY HAD THE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED ON MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY AFTER IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THEY WERE SEVERELY WORN OUT. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE PART UNDER WARRANT THANKFULLY. AT THE TIME OF THE REPAIR, MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY HAD APPROXIMATELY 32000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I FIRST HEARD ABOUT THE PROBLEM ON THE L.O.S.T INTERNET CHAT BOARD, THEN HAD THEM CHECKED AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY TOLD ME THE BALL JOINTS NEEDED IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT. *JB
THIS IS FOLLOW-UP TO COMPLAINT 10145198. JUST RECEIVED LETTER IN MAIL FROM DIAMLER CHRYSLER THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH OUR 2004 JEEP LIBERTY. THIS IS THE JEEP THAT ALMOST KILLED MY WIFE WHEN IT ACCELERATED WITHOUT HER PUSHING ON THE PEDAL. WE ARE NOW SITTING ON A BOAT ANCHOR THAT WE CAN NOT GET BACK IN TO. IF ANYONE WANTS IT LET US KNOW! WE KNOW OF AT LEAST ONE OTHER CASE OF A JEEP TAKING OFF AND INJURING SOMEONE. I WILL AGAIN ASK HOW MANY TIMES HAS SOMEONE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED IN A JEEP BECAUSE OF EXCESS SPEED. COULD THIS BE WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM. *NM
DRIVER HAD JUST COMPLETED TURN ON TO AN APPROACH RAMP TO A 4 LANE HIGHWAY. AS JEEP LIBERTY STARTED DOWN RAMP IT SPED UP WITH NO PEDAL PRESSURE. THE JEEP PULLED SHARPLY TO THE LEFT, THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO CORRECT BUT BECAUSE OF CONTINUED INCREASE OF SPEED HIT GUARD RAIL ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF RAMP. THE DRIVER HAD BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE AND HELD JEEP AGAINST GUARD RAIL FOR APPROX 300 FT BEFORE BEING ABLE TO STOP. THE UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION HAD CAUSED THE JEEP TO SWERVE SIDE TO SIDE AND IT WAS ONLY THE SKILL OF THE DRIVER THAT PREVENTED THIS JEEP FROM GOING OVER THE EDGE OF THE RAMP AND ROLLING OVER. THE DRIVER RECEIVED A BROKEN WRIST IN HER EFFORT TO KEEP THE JEEP ON THE ROAD. THE JEEP WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER AND IS STILL SITTING THERE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS INSPECTED THE JEEP AND TOLD THE DEALER NOT TO TOUCH IT. THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO PHONE CALLS ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG AND WHEN THE OWNERS MAY EXPECT THEIR JEEP BACK, IN DRIVING CONDITION. THE ONLY ANSWER THE OWNERS HAVE RECEIVED IS THE MANUFACTURERS LEGAL DEPT HAS THE FILE. THE ROAD ON THE DATE OF THIS INCIDENT WAS DRY AND THE JEEP HAD APPROX 27000 MILES ON IT. THE OWNERS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF SOMEONE CAN TELL THEM HOW MANY MORE JEEPS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. HOW MANY DEATHS IN JEEPS ARE THE RESULT OF EXCESS SPEED. COULD THESE BE THE RESULT OF THIS TYPE OF UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION. *JB
LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE. PHONE INTERVIEW UPDATE (DEC. 21, 05): BACKUP INSIDE A GAS STATION, THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATED. THE PASSENGER SIDE LOWER BALL JOINT WAS WORN. REPLACED BOTH BALL JOINTS MYSELF. THERE WAS A LITTLE NOISE FROM THE FRONT SUSPENSION PRIOR TO THE BALL JOINT SEPARATION. I KNOW OF OTHER 2004 & 2005 JEEP LIBERTY OWNERS WHO ALSO EXPERIENCED BALL JOINT FAILURES. *NM
LOWER BALL JOINTS FAILED PREMATURE ON 2004 JEEP LIBERTY RENEGADE IT WAS ABOUT 25, 000 MILES THEY SHOULD LAST ALOT LONGER THAN THAT. I DRIVE THE CAR FOR A LIVING , AND IF THIS IS GONNA BE A PROBLEM, I WILL HAVE TO FIND A MORE RELIABLE VEHICLE. *AK
I RESIDE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, WE WERE EXPERIENCING THUNDER SHOWERS EARLIER IN THE DAY. I WENT TO A 5 HOUR CLASS, UPON RETURNING THE HORN WAS BLARING, I COULD NOT STOP IT SO I HAD TO TAKE THE FUSE OUT. THEN I STARTED THE CAR BUT THE GAUGES WERE ACTING STRANGE. I HAD A HALF A TANK OF FUEL BUT IT WAS READING AS IF I HAD A FULL TANK, THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON, AFTER I GOT HOME I SHUT OF THE IGNITION BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. MY CAR IS A MANUAL, 4 CYLINDER, WITH NO POWER AMENITIES IT IS A BASIC CAR, NO AIR CONDITIONING. IT IS JUST A 2004 JEEP LIBERTY. AFTER I POPPED THE CLUTCH LIGHTLY TO STOP THE ENGINE MY LIGHTS WOULD NOT GO OFF. IT WAS NOT A MAJOR STORM JUST A QUICK SHOWER, IT MAKES ME WORRY QUITE A BIT BECAUSE THIS IS MY MAIN VEHICLE AND IF JUST A LITTLE MOISTURE CAUSES HAVOC WHAT IF I WAS IN THE SNOW WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS WOULD IT CREATE. ANOTHER THING SINCE A LIGHT SHOWER CAUSED HAVOC WHAT DOES THIS DO TO THE ELECTRICAL ON MY AIR BAGS? *JB
DT: 2004 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THE JACK FOR THE VEHICLE COLLAPSED WHILE CHANGING THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE CAME DOWN ON TOP OF THE CONTACT, BUT HE WAS NOT INJURED. THE JACK COMPLETELY BUCKLED, BENT IN HALF, AND IT NO LONGER WORKED. THE CONTACT STATED HE FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE JACK. HE CONTACTED JEEP, AND THEY TOLD HIM TO TAKE A CLASS TO LEARN HOW TO CHANGE A TIRE. WHEN THE CONTACT TOOK THE JACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY WANTED TO KEEP IT. THE CONTACT STILL HAS THE JACK. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 2004 JEEP LIBERTY THE LEFT FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL FELL TO THE RIGHT AND WAS HANGING ON BY LUGS:NUTS. UPON INSPECTION THE UPPER BALL JOINT AND THE UPPER CONTROL ARM AND THE AXLE BROKE. THE VEHICLE SPEED WAS 20 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE DEALER SHIP OFFERED NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THIS HAPPENED. THE CONTACT CALLED CHRYSLER, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS ONLY 30,000 MILES ON. IT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY ACCIDENTS OR HIT ANY ROAD HAZARD.*AK
(2004 JEEP LIBERTY 4X4) I WENT TO HAVE THE FRONT END ALIGNED ON MY JEEP BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE TIRE WEAR. THE SERVICE TECH WHERE I TOOK IT SAID THAT THE BALL JOINTS WERE WORE OUT AND THAT THEY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BEFORE THE FRONT END COULD BE ALIGNED. THE VEHICLE HAS 43,994 MILES ON IT. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THE WARRANTY COVERED 36,000 MILES. THE SERVICE CENTER SAID IT WAS A WONDER THAT I COULD KEEP THE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD. HE SHOWED ME A BULLETIN WHERE SOME DODGE DURANGO'S BALL JOINTS HAD WORN OUT AT 14,000 MILES. *JB
ON THE MORNING OF OCTOBER 2, 2005, MY SON WAS DRIVING OUR 2004 JEEP LIBERTY. APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE FROM OUR HOME, THE PASSENGER'S SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINT SEPARATED FROM THE STEERING KNUCKLE AND CAUSED MY SON TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS RESULTED IN THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE PUSHING OUTWARD AND DISLODGING THE RIGHT FRONT AXLE. WHILE MY SON WAS NOT INJURED, THERE CERTAINLY WAS THE POTENTIAL FOR CATASTROPHIC EVENTS TO OCCUR. THERE IS INFORMATION AVAILABLE THAT STATES THAT 2002-2003 MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR THIS VERY ISSUE. I AM WONDERING IF THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT CORRECTED ON THE 2004 MODELS. *JB
MY WIFE WAS IN A MVA WITH OUR 2004 JEEP LIBERTY WITH 30,000 MILES ON IT, SHE WAS HIT FROM BEHIND BY A PLYMOUTH NEON AT ABOUT 30 MILES PER HOUR UPON IMPACT THE JEEP WHICH I THOUGHT WAS ONE OF THE SAFEST VEHICLES ON THE HIGHWAY BURST INTO FLAMES THANK GOD MY WIFE ACTED FAST AND GOT HERSELF AND HER NIECE AND NEPHEW OUT WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES IF SOMETHING HAD JAMMED OR NOT WORKED RIGHT AFTER THE IMPACT THEY WOULD BE DEAD, WITH IN MINUTES OF THEM GETTING OUT OF THE JEEP IT BLEW INTO A GIANT INFERNO I CAN SAY THAT GOD WAS WATCHING OVER THEM THAT DAY. I HAVE SINCE DONE RESEARCH AND THIS ISSUE AND IT HAS BEEN AN ON GOING THING WITH JEEP SINCE 1995 HOW CAN THIS BE ALLOWED JUST FOR THEM TO MAKE THE ALL MIGHTY DOLLARS. THIS IS A TRUE CRIME AND THEY GET NO PUNISHMENT. THEY BUILT THE JEEP WITH THE FORD PINTO DESIGN . *JB
DT: ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2005 I WAS GOING ABOUT TWO MPH PULLING INTO DRIVEWAY WHEN THE LOWER BALL JOINT BROKE ON FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE AND THE WHEEL CAME OFF. THE AXLE DROPPED AND BENT IT. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING WHEN THIS HAPPENED. HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY DID REPAIR IT, AND THEY DID REPAIR THE PASSENGER SIDE BECAUSE IT WAS ALSO WORN. CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY GAVE ME A FILE NUMBER. *AK
LEFT FRONT BALL JOINT 2004 JEEP LIBERTY 40000 KMS. *NM
JEEP LIBERTY, 2004 MODEL, FRONT RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINT WAS LOOSE AND REPLACED. STEERING WAS LOOSE AND VEHICLE PULLS DURING BRAKING. THE BALL JOINT BOOT WAS NOT DAMAGED. THE BALL JOINT DOES NOT HAVE A GREASE FITTING.
DT: WAS MAKING A TURN THEN HEARD A CRUNCH SOUND TIN HE PASSENGER'S SIDE, FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE COLLAPSED. TOWED VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC, WHO SAID IT WAS A DEFAULT OF THE DEALER. CONTACTED THE DEALER, THEY ARE GOING TO SEND SOMEONE OUT BUT WHEN THEY GET AROUND TO IT. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR LOWER BALL JOINTS FOR 2002 AND 2003 MODELS. THIS HAPPENED ON AUGUST 15, 2005. THE FRONT END HAS TO HAVE NEW AXLE. IT WAS DRAGGED ON THE GROUND AND THERE WAS ALL DIFFERENT KINDS OF FLUID ON THE GROUND. THERE WAS ALSO DAMAGE TO BODY OF THE VEHICLE.*AK THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED, HOWEVER THE LOWER BALL WAS NOT REPLACED.*JB
NOTICED STIFFNESS IN THE STEERING. STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT RETURN TO STRAIGHT AFTER A TURN WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. CHECKED POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL AND SCHEDULED SERVICE APPOINTMENT. NEXT DAY, THE LOWER CONTROL ARM, DRIVER'S SIDE, LET GO AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE. FAILURE OCCURED WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE. ADVISED THEY WERE REPLAING BOTH FRONT BALL JOINTS WITH NEW. FAILURE COVERED BY WARRANTY.
DT: 2004 JEEP LIBERTY. REAR BRAKE DISC. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE FIRESTONE DEALER, AND SHOWED THEM THE DISC PLATE. ROTORS. THEY WERE ONLY GROOVES ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE PLATE, AND THE INSIDE OF THE PLATE WAS SMOOTH AND CLEAN. CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY SAID SINCE VEHICLE HAD 16,000 MILES ON IT THEY COULD NOT REPLACE THEM UNLESS THE DEALER SAID IT WAS A DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER SAID CONSUMER HAD TO PAY FOR THE INSPECTION AS WELL AS THE REPAIRS. DEALER WOULD MAKE A DETERMINATION WHETHER OR NOT THAT IT WAS A DEFECT OR NOT. THERE WAS NOT BRAKE PAD FAILURE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A CALIPER FAILURE. I HAD NEW ROTORS AND NEW BRAKE PADS PUT IN AT THE COST $350.00 PLUS TAX. *AK

2004 JEEP LIBERTY COLLIDED WITH A POWER POLE CAUSING MAJOR FRONT END DAMAGE, BUT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. FRONT END WAS REPLACED. *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW FELL DOWN AND COULD NOT BE CLOSED. THE DEALERS DIAGNOSIS DETERMINED THAT THE REGULATOR WAS DEFECTIVE. THE TWO REAR PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE WINDOWS WERE REPAIRED NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 27,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 69,000.
ACCELERATOR HAS STAYED ON APPROX.3 TIMES AT 900+ RPM WHILE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. TOLD DEALER,ON RECORD
SNOW ON GROUND , BRAKES FAILED TO STOP HIT THE GARAGE , DAMAGED THE VEHICLE AND GARAGE. ALL 4 WHEELS DID NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP. LIKE THEY WERE FROZEN. THIS IS AN UPDATE FROM JAN 22,2005. HAD VEHICLE IN DEALERSHIP, THEY REPAIRED THE DAMAGE FROM THE ACCIDENT. COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. THE WEATHER WAS WARMER WHEN THEY CHECKED IT THAN WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURRED. HAD PROBLEM AGAIN ON FEB. 20TH, THIS TIME THE FRONT BRAKES LOCK UP ON SNOW, BUT THE REAR DO NOT STOP. THEY KEEP TURNING AS NO BRAKES ARE APPLIED. HAD MECHANIC FROM WHERE I WORK LOOK AT WHAT THE VEHICLE WAS DOING, HE SUGGESTED FOR ME TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER, THAT THERE IS DEFINITELY A PROBLEM. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY LOOKED AT IT AGAIN, SAID THERE IS NO PROBLEM, THAT JEEP DESIGNED IT THAT WAY. THE REAR BRAKES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO LOCK UP IN ANY CONDITION, EVEN IN A PANIC STOP ON ICE.(THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANTILOCK BRAKES) THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM WILL ALLOW THE FRONT BRAKES TO LOCK UP, BUT THE REAR NOT. THAT THE REAR BRAKES (DISC) ARE CONSIDERABLE SMALLER THAN THE FRONT SO THEY WON'T HAVE THE POWER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. IT'S THE WAY JEEP DESIGNED IT, TO SUPPOSEDLY COMPENSATE FOR NOT HAVING ANTILOCK BRAKES. THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP ON SNOW AND ICE. WHEN TRYING TO STOP AT 25 MPH I SLID MORE THAN 50FT RIGHT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. IT WAS A GOOD THING THE OTHER VEHICLE DID STOP. THIS VEHICLE IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ALL WEATHER VEHICLE, BUT THE WAY THAT THIS ONE STOPS ON SNOW, IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN WINTER. *NM
DOOR LOCK MOTOR BEARING SEIZED. AS A RESULT, ALL THE DOORS BECAME INOPERABLE. *AK
LOTS OF SNOW ON GROUND, FREEZING WEATHER. PULLED VEHICLE OUT OF DRIVEWAY TO CLEAR SNOW FROM DRIVE. PARKED THE VEHICLE ON THE EDGE OF THE ROAD AT THE END OF MY DRIVEWAY. AFTER I HAD CLEARED A SPOT FOR THE JEEP LIBERTY, MY WIFE MOVED IT BACK IN THE DRIVE. SHE DIDN'T STOP UNTIL THE VEHICLE COLLIDED WITH THE GARAGE. I SAW THE BRAKE LIGHTS ON, BUT IT DIDN'T STOP. I QUESTIONED HER TO WHAT HAPPENED, SHE SAID THE BRAKES DIDN'T WORK. I TESTED IT MYSELF BY BACKING AWAY FROM THE GARAGE AND FOUND OUT THAT SHE WAS CORRECT. THE BRAKES DIDN'T WORK. IT HAD A FIRM PEDAL, BUT THE BRAKES DID NOT APPLY. LIKE ALMOST IF THEY WERE FROZEN. BEING A MECHANIC FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS, I NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE IT. I TALKED TO THE SALESPERSON WHOM I PURCHASED IT FROM, HE INFORMED ME THAT HE NO LONGER WORKS FOR THE DEALER AND JUST PARK IT IN A WARM GARAGE THAT WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THEY NEVER HEARD OF IT AND FOR ME TO DRIVE IT TO THEM TO CHECK IT OUT. IF IT DON'T STOP IN A 30 FOOT DRIVEWAY, I CERTAINLY WONT DRIVE IT DOWN A BUSY ROAD TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID THAT I HAVE TO BRING IT IN. WHAT A CROCK. ITS UNSAFE. I AM AS OF NOW TRYING TO CONTACT THE SALES MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF HE WILL GIVE ME SOME HELP. MY WIFE REFUSES TO RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE UNTIL WE ARE CERTAIN THAT THE BRAKE PROBLEM WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 3,350 MILES ON IT AND IS ONLY 3 1/2 MONTHS OLD. THERE WAS NO ICE ON THE DRIVEWAY I HAD CLEARED THE SNOW OFF ONTO THE BARE CEMENT. SO THAT WAS NOT AN ISSUE.

ALSO, THE SPEED ODOMETER DISPLAYED AN INACCURATE READING WHICH FLUCTUATED WHEN TRAVELING. THE ENGINE RESTARTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THERE WERE REPLACEMENTS OF THE CRUISE CONTROL SENSOR, SPEED CONTROL AND COMPUTER MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON SEVEN SEPARATE OCCASIONS FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURES. THE CONTACT HAD CONCERN OF THE SAFETY HAZARD INVOLVED. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR AFTER THE SERVICE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 3,000.

BOTH THE CONTACT AND THE FATHER-IN-LAW SWAM 40 FEET FROM SHORE TO THE VEHICLE AND RETRIEVED THE BABY. ONCE THE CHILD WAS OUT OF THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT BEGAN TO SWIM TO SHORE, THE BABY AND CONTACT MADE IT SAFELY TO SHORE. THE FATHER-IN-LAW HAD A HEART ATTACK IN THE WATER AND PASSED AWAY ON THE SCENE. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED AND A REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE CONTACT AND BABY WERE ADMITTED TO INTENSIVE CARE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER REPRESENTATIVES WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTED THAT WAS ADDRESSED IN NHTSA RECALL #05V460000 ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. *AK

ON OR AROUND 12/23/2004 WE RECEIVED BETWEEN 5 TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW. AFTER DRIVING ON THE UNPLOWED ROADS THE RIMS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY BECAME PARTLY CLOGGED WITH SNOW CAUSING AN OUT-OF-BALANCE CONDITION. THIS OUT-OF-BALANCE CONDITION CAUSED ME TO HAVE TO PULL OFF THE SIDE OF I-75 NORTH NEAR THE ROUTE 20 EXIT. I DROVE ALONG THE BRIM OF I-75 TELL THE EXIT AND GOT OFF THE EXPRESSWAY. AFTER LOOKING AT THE RIMS I NOTICED THEY WERE PACKED WITH SNOW. I THEN DROVE TO A QUARTER CAR WASH AND USING HOT SOAPY WATER REMOVED THE SNOW FROM THE RIMS. THIS SAME CONDITION SHOWED UP THE NEXT DAY AND WAS FIXED IN THE SAME MANNER. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP ED SCHMIDT JEEP EAGLE (26875 N DIXIE HWY PERRYSBURG, OH 43552 PHONE: 419 874-4331) AND REQUESTED A FACTORY REP. TO BE CALLED. ON 01/04/2004 I WAS CONTACTED BY A FACTORY REP. I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO HER AND WAS ASKED IF I HAD DRIVEN ANOTHER JEEP LIBERTY TO SEE IF IT DID THE SAME THING. I TOLD HER NO AND SHE SAID THAT IF I LIKE THE NEXT TIME WE GOT A HEAVY SNOW I CAN COME IN AND SEE IF ANY OTHER LIBERTY?S DID THE SAME THING. I THEN CALLED DAIMLERCHRYSLER REF. # 13001582 TALKED WITH A CUSTOMER CARE PERSON AND SHE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER (CHUCK) THAT IF I PUT HUB CAPS ON THE RIMS THAT MAY KEEP THE RIMS FROM FILLING WITH ICE AND SNOW. THE RIM IS MANUFACTURED WITH A DEEP POCKET AT THE FRONT INSIDE OF THE RIM. THIS POCKET FILLS WITH SNOW WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN IN SNOW. IF THIS POCKET WAS NOT THERE AS WITH OTHER RIMS, THE SNOW COULD NOT BECOME ENTRAPPED IN THE RIM CAUSING THE OUT-OF-BALANCE CONDITION. *AK
MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY WAS PARKED UNDER MY CARPORT. I HAD STARTED THE ENGINE TO WARM THE CAR, WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON. THERE WAS NO ONE AROUND THE CAR BUT MY DOGS, BUT SOMEHOW IT MANAGED TO ROLL DOWN THE DRIVEWAY INTO THE CORNER OF A BARN. THE DISTANCE WAS ABOUT 10 YARDS WITH AN INCLINE OF ABOUT 2 FEET, YET THER WAS OVER $3000.00 IN DAMAGE TO THE CAR. IT HIT RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE GRILL/HOOD. I WAS VERY SURPRISED AS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ON, HOWEVER ON INSPECTION, THERE WAS STILL ONE CLICK LEFT ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I HAVE TESTED THIS THEORY BY GETTING ON A HILL IN THE VEHICLE AND PULLING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. INDEED, IT DOES NOT HOLD THE VEHICLE UNTIL YOU REACH THE VERY LAST CLICK ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. JEEP DENIES ANY PRODUCT FLAW WHEN CONTACTED. I DISAGREE. I HATE TO THINK WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ME IF I AM EVER IN A WRECK IF A ROLL WITH NO ACCELERATION CAN DAMAGE THE VEHICLE AT 25% OF ITS VALUE!
VEHICLE IS OCCASIONALLY HAVING TROUBLE DECELERATING BECAUSE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL GETS STUCK ON THE FLOOR. TAKEN TO DEALER FOR CHECKUP, BUT THE CAUSE IS UNDETERMINED. *AK
SINCE PURCHASING THE 2004 JEEP LIBERTY THERE HAS BEEN A LOUD SCREECHING NOISE FOR THE FIRST MILE OR TWO WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FIRST DRIVEN. AT LEAST 2 TRIPS TO THE DEALER SERVICE RESULTS IN NO REPAIR. DEALERS FIX WAS TO LOOSEN THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE SO THAT THE PARKING BRAKE PADS DID NOT RUB ON THE DRUM. 2 YEARS LATER THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS! *JB

CONSUMERTOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER. DEALER CONTACTED AN ENGINEER, WHO TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE 10 MILES BUT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. *AK THE CONSUMER ALSO INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE DOES NOT OPERATE IN 4WD HIGH IN REVERSE. *NM

AT ABOUT 5-6,000 MILES MY 04 JEEP LIBERTY SPORT'S ACCELERATION BEGAN TO STUTTER AT AROUND 50 MPH. IF YOU DRIVE CONSISTENTLY BETWEEN 50-60 MPH FOR A FEW MILES AND THEN TRY TO ACCELERATE THE ENGINE PRESSURE DROPS, THE RPMS DROP AND THE GAS PEDDLE FEELS LIKE IT'S DISAPPEARED. EVENTUALLY IT WILL CATCH AND THE RPMS SPIKE TO ABOUT 4000 RPMS AND THE CAR ACCELERATES BUT IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION I FEEL THAT THE CARS ACCELERATION WILL FAIL. I'VE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND EVERY TIME THE DEALER CAN NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AS THE PROBLEM HAPPENS ONLY WHEN YOU SUSTAIN 50-60 MPH OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. *NM
WHILE SHIFTING GEARS DRIVER HEARD A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT. VEHICLE JERKED, AND IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE STEERING POWER ASSIST PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND REPLACED IT. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED, AND THE MECHANIC COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK

A POLICE OFFICER WITNESSED THE INCIDENT AND SAID THAT IT APPEARED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES DID NOT REACT. THE CAR IS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH ENHANCED ACCIDENT RESPONSE SYSTEM WHICH OBVIOUSLY DID NOT REACT. *JB

LEFT HAND TURN AT LOW SPEED RESULTS IN JEEP LIBERTY 2004 TURNING 180 DEGREES AND ROLLING OVER. PRIMARY CAUSE OF CLAIM APPEARS TO BE BROKEN LEFT FRONT SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM. APPEARS TO BE METAL FAILURE. TOTAL VEHICLE DAMAGE APPROXIMATELY $7,000.00. VEHICLE PHOTOGRAPHED EXTENSIVELY AT CRASH SITE. ALL CRITICAL DAMAGED PARTS SALVAGED.
SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING MY JEEP LIBERTY 4X4 WITH 6 CYL. ENGINE AND 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION NEW, IT WOULD OCCASIONALLY EXHIBIT AN ABRUPT THUNK WHEN DOWNSHIFTING INTO FIRST GEAR AS IN COMING TO A STOP. THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER SAID IT WAS COMMON TO THE VEHICLE AND A "QUIRK." IT CONTINUED TO DO THIS OFF AND ON UNTIL I REACHED APPROXIMATELY 43,000 MILES AT WHICH TIME THE CONDITION WORSENED. NOW, IT WILL ALSO DISPLAY A LOUD THUNK AND JERK IN THE REAR FEELING AS IF YOU HAVE BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND WHEN STARTING TO MOVE FORWARD FROM A STOP IN 1ST GEAR. I KNOW I WAS NOT HIT AS THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME ONE TIME AND I PULLED OVER TO CHECK ON A SECOND TIME TO BE SURE THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF BEING HIT. THIS HAPPENS APPROXIMATELY 2 TIMES PER WEEK, DEPENDING ON HOW OFTEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN. THE FEELING IS VERY ALARMING. I CALLED ONE JEEP DEALER WHO SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO UNLESS THEY CAN REPRODUCE THE SYMPTOM OR IF A WARNING LIGHT WAS ON TO READ THE ERROR CODES (NO WARNING LIGHT HAS EVER GONE ON). THE SECOND DEALER SAID THEY WOULD LOOK AT IT FOR $100, BUT COULD NOT GUARANTEE ANYTHING. *TR

TWICE IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS VEHICLE DID A 360 DEGREE TURN AFTER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. ONE OCCURRENCE WAS ON WET ROAD SURFACE, AND THE OTHER INCIDENT OCCURRED ON DRY ROAD SURFACE. AN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATOR RULED OUT THE ABS BRAKES BEING AS THE CAUSE. AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON THE WET SURFACE WITH THE VEHICLE COLLIDING INTO BARRIER. *AK
