THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE NOW IN 3 DAYS. AFTER FULLY FILLING MY FUEL TANK AND THEN DRIVING AWAY FROM THE PUMP MY JEEP PATRIOT STALLS BEFORE I HIT 3/10 OF A MILE FROM THE GAS STATION. CONTRARY TO SOME OTHER REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE, THAT I HAVE READ, AS WELL AS THE EXPLANATION OF THE ISSUE POSTED ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE, FROM FCA, THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ONLY AT IDLE. RATHER IT HAPPENS WHILE I AM DRIVING. WHEN MY JEEP STALLS I ALSO LOSE THE ABILITY TO FULLY STEER (CAN ONLY TURN THE WHEEL APPX 1/4 TURN) AND BRAKING DOES NOT WORK AS WELL AS IT NORMALLY DOES. WHEN IT HAPPENED TODAY I ENDED UP MOUNTING A CURB AND SIDEWALK IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. THE STREET I WAS ON WAS TURNING BUT I COULDN'T TURN WITH IT. IF I HAD NOT ENGAGED THE EMERGENCY/PARKING BRAKE I WOULD HAVE DRIVEN THROUGH A CHAIN LINK FENCE AND INTO A HOME. ONCE I RESTARTED MY JEEP AND BACKED OFF OF THE CURB THE ENGINE STALLED AGAIN WHILE MY JEEP WAS IN MOTION. LUCKILY I WAS BARELY MOVING AND ALREADY HAD MY HAND ON THE EMERGENCY/PARKING BRAKE. WHEN I RESTARTED MY JEEP THE NEXT TIME I REVVED THE ENGINE TO 3,000RPM FOR APPX 1 MINUTE WHILE MY JEEP WAS IN PARK. MY JEEP DID NOT STALL AFTER THAT FOR THE REST OF TODAY. TOMORROW MAY BE ANOTHER STORY. I SEE IN THIS FORM THERE IS THE ABILITY TO UPLOAD PHOTOS BUT I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS BEING AN EXISTING SAFETY ISSUE OR THE ABILITY TO REPORT IT BEFORE NOW. AS A RESULT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF MY JEEP ON A CURB ABOUT TO CRASH INTO SOMEONE'S HOUSE. WITH THE NUMBER OF REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE HAVING ALREADY BEEN MADE TO THE NHTSA I AM SHOCKED THAT A MANDATORY SAFETY RECALL WAS NOT DEMANDED.
WHEN I FILL THE GAS TANK ALL THE WAY THE CAR WILL GO ABOUT 25 FEET AND START TO STALL AND SHUTOFF LOCKING THE STEERING WHEEL AND I HAVE NO CONTROL OF THE CAR. WHEN I FILL UP THE CAR WITH GAS AFTER LEAVING AND DRIVING FOR 20-30 SECONDS AND STOP AT THE STOP LIGHT OR SIGN THE CAR WILL DIE AND THE STEERING WHEEL WILL LOCK UP TAKES A COUPLE OF TRIES BEFORE IT WILL START UP AND CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP I CAN'T EVEN MOVE THE CAR TO THE SIDE IF I HAVE TO. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THE PAST YEAR.
AFTER FILLING UP AT GAS STATION AND GETTING ON HIGHWAY ENGINE SHUTS OFF AFTER THE JEEP BUCKED SEVERAL TIMES. WHEN ENGINE SHUT OFF STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. HAD TO PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL URN KEY TO TURN ON ENGINE. ADDITIONALLY AFTER THAT,JEEP CONTINUALLY DIES IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING FILL UP AT GAS STATION. IT CURRENTLY DIES APPROXIMATELY 3 TIMES IN A ROW BEFORE THE ENGINE WILL STAY RUNNING. THIS IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS EVENT. IF IT SHUTS OFF AND I DO NOT WAIT AT THE GAS STATION WHILE I'M DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS AND I COULD HAVE AN ACCIDENT AND KILL MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SITUATION THAT JEEP / CHRYSLER NEEDS TO FIX. WAS THERE A CRASH ... ALMOST!
EVERY TIME I REFUEL THE VEHICLE SPUTTERS AND STALLS. NO MATTER WHAT GRADE OF FUEL. IT WILL SPUTTER AND STALL FOR UP TO 20 MILES AFTER I FILL IT UP. IT HAS EVEN STALLED WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS WHEN THAT HAPPENS. IT'S NOT SAFE. THE JEEP DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN REPLACING STUFF HOPING TO FIND A FIX BUT NO LUCK SO FAR. IT WILL STALL STATIONARY, MOVING, TURNING, OR BRAKING. I BELIEVE IT MAY BE SOMETHING RELATED TO THE FUEL TANK ROLLOVER VALVE. AT LEAST THAT'S THE ONLY REASONABLE THING I HAVE READ OR BEEN TOLD. CAR PURCHASED IN WI AND DRIVEN IN TX. CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN REGULARLY TO MECHANIC FOR MAINTENANCE FOR FRONT SUSPENSION PROBLEMS. AT 77K, TWO OUTER TIE RODS AND TWO LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED, AT 133K, REPLACED ONE LOWER BALL JOINT AND ONE OUTER TIE ROD AGAIN. AT 136K REPLACED INNER TIE ROD. AT 143K REPLACED TWO FRONT CONTROL ARMS. CURRENTLY, BOTH CONTROL ARMS AND OUTER TIE RODS NEED TO REPLACED AGAIN, CURRENT MILEAGE IS 198K. MECHANIC HAS REPORTED NOISE COMING FROM FRONT SUSPENSION AND HAS NOTED HEAVY AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE FRONT CROSS MEMBER. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE METAL IN FRONT CROSS MEMBER IS WEAK AND FURTHER COMPROMISED IF DRIVING IN AREAS WHERE SALT IS USED TO DE-ICE ROAD. IN ADDITION TIRES HAVE NEEDED TO REPLACED EACH TIME DUE TO UNEVEN WEAR RESULTING FROM THIS PROBLEM. CAR IS MAIN DRIVEN IN CITY ENVIRONMENT.
VEHICLE STALLS AND STEERING LOCKS UP. THIS HAPPENED TWICE WHEN I WAS TURNING AND ALMOST GOT IN AN ACCIDENT BOTH TIMES SOMEBODY IS GOING TO GET KILLED! SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AFTER EVERYTIME I FILL THE FUEL TANK FULL OF GASOLINE. AFTER DRIVING CAR FROM STATION, APPROXIMATELY .25 MILE TO 1 MILE AWAY. THE ENGINE WILL BUCK/SHUTTER AND STALL WHILE IN MOTION AT APPROXIMATELY 10-25 MILES PER HOUR. THE ENGINE EXPERIENCES EXTREME LOSS OF POWER WITH VIOLENT BURSTS OF POWER. THESE INCIDENTS LAST TEN SECONDS IN DURATION. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ON TO HIGHWAY, WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC, THIS CAN CAUSE QUITE A BIT OF STRESS. THIS ONLY HAPPENS AFTER THE FUEL TANK IS FILLED FULL.
EVERY SINGLE TIME I FILL UP THE TANK, IT RUNS A VERY SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE GAS STATION AND STARTS TO BUCK AND JOLT LIKE IT WANTS TO SHUT OFF. WHEN THE CAR STALLS OUT, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND THE BRAKES LOSE POWER. VERY DANGEROUS!
SHORTLY AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK OF MY 2007 JEEP PATRIOT (49XXX MILES) I WAS COMING TO A 4 WAY INTERSECTION (ONLY MY SIDE AND THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE INTERSECTION HAS STOP SIGNS). AS I WAS PULLING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION MY JEEP PATRIOT STALLED AND I LOST MY POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. I WAS ALMOST STRUCK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BY A VEHICLE TRAVELING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE INTERSECTION FROM MY ORIENTATION OF THE INTERSECTION. I TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES TO NO AVAIL. IT WOULD START AND THEN IMMEDIATELY STALL AGAIN. AFTER ALMOST BEING STRUCK 5-6 TIMES AND AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES OF BEING STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION I MANAGED TO START THE VEHICLE UP AND DRIVE IT HOME BY DRIVING ABOUT 15 MILES PER HOUR ON BACKROADS FOR THE REMAINING 2 MILES TO MY HOUSE. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET TO FIND THE PROBLEM I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AMONG MANY JEEP PATRIOT/COMPASS OWNERS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE AS MYSELF AND MY PASSENGER (FIANCEE) COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED IF NOT FOR SHEER LUCK.
AFTER DOING A FULL REFUEL OF THE VEHICLE THE VEHICLE WILL STALL WHILE IN MOTION, LOOSING ALL ASSISTED STEERING AND BREAKING. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED ENGINE STALLED IN MID TRAFFIC AND I WAS ALMOST HIT BY THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME ON THE CITY. SECOND TIME I REACHED THE HIGHWAY WHEN IT STALLED THIS WAS EVEN MORE SCARY. VEHICLE WILL RESTART AFTER PUTTING IN PARK AND STALL AGAIN A COUPLE OF BLOCKS DOWN. THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE TANK IS FILED TILL GAS STATION PUMP AUTO STOPS. IF I FILL 3/4 THEN NO STALLING OCCURS. I HAVE READ ONLINE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO MANY JEEP PATRIOT OWNERS. SOME CLAIM THAT IT IS RELATED TO LIQUID FUEL GOING INTO THE EVAP CANISTER AND THEN BEING SENT TO THE ENGINE WHEN FIECU EXPECTS FUEL VAPORS. THIS ISSUE CAN CAUSE FATAL INJURIES IF ENGINE STALLS ON THE WRONG PLACE.
AFTER FILLING THE FUEL TANK ALL THE WAY THE CAR WILL STUTTER AND STALL WHEN YOU FIRST PULL AWAY FROM THE STATION. I WAS TOLD THIS IS BECAUSE THE VAPORS CANISTER MALFUNCTIONS. THIS ISN'T BAD, EXCEPT IN THIS STATE THE STEERING LOCKS. IT DOESN'T JUST GET AND TO STEER LIKE OLD DAYS WITHOUT POWER STEERING, THE STEERING WHEEL ACTUALLY LOCKS AS IF YOU ARE IN PARK.
WHEN THE TANK IS FILLED, THE ENGINE STALLS SOON AFTER LEAVING THE GAS STATION. THE VEHICLE BUCK AND STALLS, AND QUITS COMPLETELY. VERY DANGEROUS WHEN IT IS IN TRAFFIC OR DURING A TURN AS STEERING AND BRAKES NON-FUNCTIONAL. HAVE REPLACED CHARCOAL CANISTER BUT NOW MECHANIC INFORMS ME THE WHOLE GAS TANK ASSEMBLY NEEDS REPLACEMENT. WORK-AROUND FOR NOW IS TO NOT FILL THE TANK UP ALL THE WAY.
AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK THE ENGINE WILL STALL. IT HAPPENS WITH ENGINE IDLEING OR AFTER ENTERRING TRAFFIC. VERY VERY VERY VERY.......DANGEROUS, JEEP NEEDS TO FIX THIS ISSUE. AFTER REFUELING VEHICLE TO FULL TANK CAPACITY, THE VEHICLE STALLS AND STEERING WHEEL LOCKS IN AN INTERSECTION WITHIN A FEW BLOCKS FROM THE GAS STATION. FOR 2 YEARS, THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN STALLING AFTER EVERY GAS REFUELING. IT HAS NOW STARTED TO LOCK THE STEERING WHEEL CONCURRENT WITH THE STALLING. MY WIFE, WHO WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE 8/18/15 INCIDENT FELT SHE WAS IN DANGER AS CARS TRIED TO AVOID THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS ALMOST HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE LOCKED STEERING WHEEL.
ON 09/17/13 AT 0858 HOURS, I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 JEEP PATRIOT ON THE I-17 FRONTAGE ROAD WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER STEERING. PRIOR TO THE LOSS OF POWER, I WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND ON AN EVEN CONCRETE SURFACE AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH IN NORMAL TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO "ACT UP," THE LIGHT FOR MY ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL TURNED ON AND THE ESC BECAME ACTIVE AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN TO BLINK AMBER. DUE TO ESC, MY VEHICLE WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL (ONCE AGAIN THIS WAS ON AN EVEN, PAVED SURFACE WITH NO CONDITIONS REQUIRING THE ESC TO ACTIVATE). ALONG WITH THE ESC BECOMING ACTIVE, MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL AND LOSE POWER. MY ENGINE WOULD PEAK AT A MERE 2000K RPM AND AT ABOUT TWENTY MILES PER HOUR. THANKFULLY I WAS ONLY ON A FRONTAGE ROAD AND WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY PULL INTO AN INDUSTRIAL AREA, HOWEVER, IF I WAS ON I-17 (WHICH DOES NOT HAVE A SHOULDER) I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN GREAT DANGER. ONCE STOPPED, I HAD TO STOP/START MY ENGINE FOUR TIMES FOR THE ESC AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO DEACTIVATE. ONCE THEY DID THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO JEEP DEALERSHIP IN NORTH PHOENIX TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THEY ADVISED IT RETURNED A "TORQUE REQUEST SIGNAL DENIED" HISTORICAL CODE FOR WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, WHICH "DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE." I BELIEVE THE ABOVE INCIDENT IS RELATED TO TWO EVENTS THAT HAPPEN ON 9/14/13. DURING TWO SEPARATE RIGHT TURNS THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL THROUGH A TURN ONLY TO JOLT AND REGAIN POWER. *JB
I WAS DRIVING MY CAR AND THE FRONT END STARTED TO SHAKE ALL OVER THE ROAD. I TOOK IT TO MY REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT MY LOWER BALL JOINTS NEED TO BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY DUE TO BEING EXCESSIVELY WORN OUT AND IN A DANGERS CONDITION. *TR
JEEP BEGAN MAKING CLUNKING SOUND WHEN TURNING. INFORMED THAT LOWER CONTROL ARMS WITH BALL JOINTS IN THE FRONT NEED TO BE REPLACED. HAD THIS HAPPEN ON A PREVIOULY OWNED JEEP LIBERTY BUT THAT WAS REPAIRED VIA A RECALL. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE ON A SIMILAR VEHICLE. HAVE SEEN THAT THERE ARE MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE ON PATRIOTS WITH RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE. THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL AS THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THEY PERFORMED A RECALL ON FOR A PREVIOUS MODEL. A FAILING BALL JOINT POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK.
JULY 2011: SUBMITTED MY VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC FOR A SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE BALL BEARING ASSEMBLY WAS SO STRUCTURALLY INEPT THAT THE FRONT WHEELS COULD BE DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. REPAIRS WERE MADE AS WAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. NOV 2011: ABOUT 4,000 MILES LATER OUR JEEP WAS SCHEDULED ANOTHER OIL CHANGE, AND THE SAME MECHANIC NOTICED THAT SINCE OUR LAST SERVICE THE TIE RODS WERE IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. MY MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THIS IS NOT TYPICAL OF A VEHICLE THAT HAS TOTAL 49,000 MILES AND COULD NOT HAVE PREDICTED SUCH ISSUES BETWEEN ROUTINE SERVICE APPOINTMENTS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP PATRIOT 4X4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, AN UNKNOWN NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SHOP FOR INSPECTION. AFTER INSPECTION, THEY NOTICED THAT THE TIE RODS WERE LOOSE, RESULTING IN THE BALL JOINTS ALSO BECOMING LOOSE. THE MECHANIC REPAIRED THE TIE RODS, BUT NOT THE BALL JOINTS. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,000.
