NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2012 Jeep Wrangler. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Occasionally we would smell gasoline fumes. The occurrence became more frequent to the point we had a mechanic check it out. The mechanic dropped the gas tank and found that there is a steel ring between the tank and the fuel pump flange. This flange had rusted and expanded to the point of cracking the fuel pump flange. Mechanic replaced the flange, seal and fuel pump. I have retained the cracked fuel pump.
I bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with 97,000 miles on it in December 2022. It was brought in for service due to some issues with the dash screen lighting, right blinker, and the heater. They first told me that all parts were on back order. I looked up the parts myself as I have a wholesale account and I showed that they were not on back order. I let them know this and conveniently, they were able to get all parts within a week. They called me when the vehicle was done for repairs and when I was driving it home, I noticed that the odometer was off by 23,000 miles. When I drove my vehicle home after having work done, it was at 74,355 miles. The dealership told me to bring it in right away. I brought it in the next day at 4:30pm. After a week, they told me that Chilson's Jeep dealership gave them the wrong information when they were replacing the cluster for the dash lights and they did not reprogram it correctly. They asked me how long I was planning on keeping the vehicle because if I kept it for a while, then I would be okay if I went over the initial 97,000 miles and no one would know. They also gave me the option for them to buy it back. This was on 1/9/23. I called them on 1/11/23 and told them I did not want to keep the vehicle as it was a liability and illegal to roll back an odometer in a vehicle and the title would have to be changed along with other risks that are incorporated with it. I talked to my insurance company and other dealership owners in the area and no one was comfortable with me keeping the vehicle due to legalities and risks associated with this. Chippewa Valley Mazda Sales Managers Adam and Nariah both told me they would only give me the purchase price and would not pay for anything over that. If they bought it back then I would need to come in with the vehicle and a check for over $6,000+. There is an open DOT Investigation on this. Adam stated today, 1/16/23 that they need my vehicle off their lot because it can't stay there and the loaner back
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while refueling, fuel spilled out when the automatic shut off activated on the fuel pump. The contact stated that the failure recurred. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
CAM SENSOR FAILED. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT APPEARED. REPLACED AND SAME PROBLEMS OCCURRED. MAY BE WIRING OR CAM/ROCKER ISSUES.
The secondary hood latch failed, and was not securing the hood. In the event of a primary hood latch failure, the hood could release and strike the windshield while driving, obscuring vision and potentially causing bodily harm. My research indicates that this is not an isolated incident.
ABS, Traction control and Brake lights came on. Veh has 45000 miles on it. Was advised the ABS module is bad. Part is no where to be found, and no dealer can order it. Basically the vehicle braking system is questionable on the road without ABS or traction.
Front-end crash resulted in airbags busting instead of inflating. Current back and neck injuries.
While driving the car randomly stalls. I lose power steering and braking. The car will not restart. This issue has been recorded by the dealer. The vehicle was last inspected on July 5th. I have been issued a Jeep Care case manager, case # 82963828. There are no warnings, while driving makes a left-hand turn the car just stalls!
Airbag light mostly on all the time last few days. Years ago cruise control would go out and fix was to blow horn 15 seconds and it would work (true) due to bad clock spring that jeep knows is bad. They did a recall but stopped the year before my jeep even though have the same spring and no dust cover. It's over a thousand dollars to repair, which I cannot afford. Just hoping it doesn't blow up on me while driving. Jeep dealer charges hundreds just to scan codes here.
While driving making a turn, shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and vehicle stalls losing all power. I had a crank no-start scenario! The vehicle has been to the dealer multiple times and the issue can not be duplicated. The vehicle has been inspected multiple times and there are no known issues. No-fault codes are thrown. I was able to cost to a safe location, and wait. after 3-5 min the vehicle restarted.
While driving making a turn, shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and vehicle stalls losing all power. I had a crank no-start scenario! The vehicle has been to the deal multiple times and the issue can not be duplicated.
The vehicle has been to the deal multiple times and the issue can not be duplicated. The vehicle has been inspected multiple times and there are no known issues. No-fault codes are thrown. I stalled in the middle of a busy intersection, with my children in the car. I had to push the vehicle to safety!
Starting out at a stop sign. engaging the clutch to start moving, while shifting into 2nd gear while turning the vehicle stalls. Losing all power steer and brakes. I try to re-start the car i get a crank no-start scenario. Wait 3-5 min, retry starting the vehicle starts.
Starting out at a stop light, engaging the clutch to start moving, I depressed the clutch to shift into second gear while making a turn, the vehicle stalls, losing all power.
The vehicle would take a minute to click into gear when at a light and also when driving on the freeway, the vehicle will only go up to a certain speed (40mph) and would not switch gears (automatic) after that, the RPMs just kept going higher until I had to pull over.
I noticed that the air bag light came in about 6-12 months ago. I am very concerned because, my Jeep is in excellent shape, however, I transport my 94 yo mom around, so this really bothers me. I have seen several recalls regarding air bags in my model, so I wanted to see if this would be part of one of the recalls. I had my mechanic review and to replace would cost me about $800, which I do not have. If this is due to a failure on Jeeps part, I would like this taken care of.
While driving the car stalled. Loss of power steering and braking. I was able to coast to a safe location. I tried to restart, but Crank- No Start.
Both the front drivers side and front passenger side seat belts no longer retract fully. The mechanism and surrounding areas seems to be free of debris. Additionally the airbag light comes on and off when anyone sits in the front passenger seat. I travel in the vehicle alone mostly. The fact that the seat belts and airbag systems are not working properly caused me to call a local dealership about repair and they told me the could not assist for more than a month.
While driving making a left-hand turn, crossing an intersection the vehicle stalled. Lossing all power, no power stirring or breaks. When trying to re-start vehicle will not re-start.
While crossing an intersection the vehicle stalled for no reason. No Codes were posted. Crank No Start, waited 10 min, and the vehicle started. Drove to the dealer to resolve. Dealer has no known reason for stalling while driving
Random Stalling while driving, making a left-hand turn. While entering an intersection, the vehicle stalled losing all power. Was able to coast to a safe spot. Waited 15 min, the vehicle started. No check engine light.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Wrangler equipped with Duraturn tires, Tire Line: Travia A/T, Tire Size: LT285/70/R17, DOT Number: UFWMFLC3416, UFWMFLC1916, UFWMFLC0216, UFWMFLC2016. The contact stated that one of the tires experienced tread separation and the set of tires were replaced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 20T016000 (Tires). The vehicle and tire failure mileages were unknown.
Oil filter housing is cracked and leaking oil. Potential fire hazard, pooling of oil on engine block. Seems to be a widespread problem.
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the front passenger’s side brakes locked up without warning. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The contact replaced the front passenger’s side caliper however, the failure recurred. The contact also replaced the front brake lines. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 80,000.
Driving vehicle at low speeds (30-40mph), front end of Jeep shakes uncontrollably. Vehicle must be stopped in order for shaking to stop. This shaking is becoming worse and dangerous. Two independent tire shops have reviewed the concerns and are unable to determine source of shaking. This is becoming a daily occurrence.
The power steering line has rubbed a hole in the transmission line causing a loss of flammable transmission fluid onto the hot exhaust and underside of vehicle and the transmission isn't shifting properly. Transmission fluid could ignite on the hot exhaust setting the jeep on fire while driving. The dealer refused to work on my jeep because of some modifications that do not affect the Transmission lines or power steering lines in any way to cause this issue. No warning lights came on, I had noticed the lines rubbing about a month and a half prior which is when the dealer said there's nothing they can do they didn't even look at it.
I placed a box of candles on my passenger seat. I drove less than 1 mile when my airbag light came on. The box weighed less than 10lbs. The light is still and and dings every few minutes
The contact owns a 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the accelerator became stuck and the vehicle accelerated inadvertently with the traction control warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle continued to accelerate while depressing the brake pedal. The contact had not taken the vehicle to be serviced or diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there were no recalls on her vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000
Driving down the road and entire Jeep started shaking. Stopped the vehicle immediately and had it towed home.
Farmers Insurance reporting - customer brought in vehicle for repair after an auto accident. The airbag did not deploy in the accident, but while being worked on the airbag deployed and caused severe injury to the employee of our insured policy holder. Contractor determined the airbag deployed due to the clock spring error.
Becoming the new owner in 2021, I was issued a recall for the passenger airbag inflator replacement. After repairing this recall, the vehicle air bag light came on and has not turned off since. I made several attempts with dearlership to access the problem and in May 2022 the dealership diagnosed the problem stating it was the airbag clockspring. This clockspring had a recall on it in June 2016 and was replaced in September 2016. The dealership along with another AMS certified mechanics shop stated the clockspring that was replaced in 2016 is defective. This is causing multiple safety issues with the vehicle. The anti skid system activates, the anti lock braking is activated, the cruise control will not operate, along with the fact the air bags are inoperable or not operating at full capacity as they are required to.
Clockspring malfunction, not working, airbag light illuminated. Similar problem with Jeep RHD Wranglers which uses the same part as the LHD Wranglers, resulting in no airbag deployment if involved in accident. Malfunctioning 2012 Jeep Wrangler LHD Clockspring.
I was driving on the highway and the engine caught fire. I’ve been looking for an engine to rebuild and all of them had previously been on fire. I believe the engine is defective for the jeeps that year, make and model.
AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON AND WILL ONLY TURN OFF WHEN NOT IN MOTION. BIG SAFETY ISSUE
I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2012 JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED (VIN: [XXX]). WITHIN 1 MONTH OF TAKING POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE, THE CAR BEGAN TO STALL INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. SPECIFICALLY, THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF AND THE POWER STEERING AND BREAKS DEACTIVATE. TO STATE THE OBVIOUS, THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION, PARTICULARLY AS OUR FAMILY HAS THREE CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF SIX. TO DATE, LARRY MILLER JEEP HAS BEEN UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE AS NO ERROR CODES APPEAR. LOOKING ONLINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN DEFECT WITH JEEPS OF MY MODEL YEAR (HTTPS://WWW.WRANGLERFORUM.COM/THREADS/ELECTRICAL-PROBLEM-SHUTS-OFF-WHILE-DRIVING.190041/) SO I AM SURPRISED THAT JEEP HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM GIVEN THE DIRE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES. I HAVE ESCALATED THIS MATTER TO YOUR CUSTOMER CARE GROUP, BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE FCA HAS SITUATIONAL AWARENESS OF THIS SITUATION AS WELL. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
ABS LIGHT, ANTI-SKID LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COME ON. TOUCHED THE BRAKE SLIGHTLY AND JEEP WENT INTO A SKID. MY STEERING WHEEL WANTS TO LOCK UP, MY BRAKES ARE TRYING TO BRAKE. SEEMS LIKE A FAULTY ABS WHEEL SENSOR AND EVEEYONE IS HAVING THIS PROBLEM
OIL COOLER CRACKED AND LEAKING ANTIFREEZE ALL OVER ENGINE AND UNDER FRAME. ANTIFREEZE IN THE OIL. ONLY 69K MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A REALLY BIG PROBLEM WITH THESE OIL COOLERS ON JEEPS AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. COST TO REPLACE IS VERY EXPENSIVE!!
ON MY WAY TO WORK ON CITY STREET, SLIGHT CURVE IN ROAD, IT WAS RAINING. CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 50MPH. I HEARD THE CHIME AND GLANCED AT THE DASHBOARD. CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT WAS OUT, ABS LIGHT, ANTI-SKID LIGHT AND PARKING BRAKE LIGHT WERE ON. TOUCHED THE BRAKE SLIGHTLY AND JEEP WENT INTO A SKID. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS NEXT TO ME. TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC THE NEXT DAY AND WAS TOLD THE ABS MODULE HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 38000 MILES ON IT.
OIL COOLER BROKE AND STARTED LEAKING AFTER THE COLD TEMPERATURE IN OKLAHOMA ON 2/14/21
MY JEEP IS NOW STALLING MID DRIVE WHEN I TURN MY WHEEL. 3 TIMES IT'S HAPPENED WHILE TURNING FROM A STOP LIGHT AND ONCOMING TRAFFIC HAD TO STOP AND GO AROUND ME. I'VE HAD 2 MECHANICS LOOK AT IT AND NEITHER OF THEM CAN FIND AN ISSUE. RPMS GO TO ZERO AND MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP. THE ONLY WAY TO RESET IT IS TO PUT IT IN PARK, TURN THE CAR OFF THEN BACK ON. OUTSIDE OF THOSE 3 TIMES IT'S HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING AND TURNING ONTO A STREET OR INTO A PARKING LOT - THERE IS NO RHYME OR REASON TO WHAT WILL TRIGGER IT. I'VE READ QUITE A FEW FORUMS WHERE THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO IMMEDIATELY!! I WENT FROM FEELING CAREFREE IN MY JEEP TO KEEPING BOTH OF MY HANDS ON THE WHEEL WHILE MAKING ANY TURN AND BEING CONSTANTLY TENSE. PLEASE PLEASE ANNOUNCE A RECALL AND FIX THIS!
THE OIL COOLER FAILING, LEAKING. I HAVE JUST DISCOVERED THAT MY OIL COOLER IS LEAKING FROM A PUDDLE ON THE GROUND AND MY LOWER ENGINE FULL OF OIL. I GOT NO WARNING LIGHT. IF THERE HAD NOT BEEN A NOTICABLE PUDDLE I WOULD HAVE NEVER NOTICED IT. IF NOT MY MOTOR WOULD HAVE LOCKED UP AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I CHECKED MY OIL LEVEL AND NO OIL IS ON THE DIPSTICK. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY BIG PROBLEM IN THE JEEP COMMUNITY. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED. IF IT WAS A HERE AND THERE INCIDENT, IT WOULD B DIFFERENT. BUT IT'S A VERY BIG PROBLEM. IN THE PHOTO LOOK TO THE LEFT OF THE OIL FILTER HOUSING. IT'S A PUDDLE OF OIL. THE PRICE OF OIL IS NOT CHEAP. NEITHER IS THE TIME CONSUMING AND COST OF THE REPAIR. PLEASE ADD THIS TO THE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE.
AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON AND IT THROWS CODE B1B02 DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG SQUIB 2 CIRCUIT OPEN. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND NOTICED JEEP'S OF THE SAME YEAR ONLY LEFT SIDE DRIVE WERE RECALLED. LIGHT COMES ON WHILE SETTING STILL BUT GOES ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING.
2012 JEEP WRANGLER JK CLOCK SPRING ASSEMBLY IS FAULTY, CIRCUIT IS OPEN CAUSING AIR BAG LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE AND POSSIBLE ISSUES DEPLOYING AIR BAG IN EVENT OF A CRASH. SAME ISSUE AS PREVIOUS MY JKS. AIR BAG LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE WHEN STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED, SOMETIMES STAYING ON OR TURNING BACK OFF. ALSO SEEMS TO BE HAPPEN MORE FREQUENTLY DURING COOL WEATHER (LESS THAN 60 DEGREES F).
CAR COMPLETELY DIES WHEN SITTING IDLE. I BELIEVE THE CONTROL MODULE IS FAULTY AND I HAVE HEARD MANY COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER DODGE/CHRYSLER/JEEP CUSTOMERS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE. MY 15 MONTH OLD SON WAS IN THE CAR WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND IT SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME TO BE SITTING AT A MAJOR STOPLIGHT AND THE CAR COMPLETELY DIE. I WAS SCARED FOR MY SAFETY AND SCARED FOR MY SON'S SAFETY. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS NOT AN OPEN RECALL RIGHT NOW. WHEN THE JEEP DIES ALL OF THE RELAYS START ENGAGING AND THE DASH LIGHTS BLINK ON AND OFF. I HAVE HAD MY BATTERY, ALTERNATOR, AND STARTED CHECKED BY A LICENSED MECHANIC. I DO NOT HAVE ANY OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES EITHER. PLEASE CREATE A RECALL FOR THIS SO MY FAMILY WILL BE SAFE WHEN I DRIVE THEM AROUND.
OIL LEAKING OFF TOP OF ENGINE. CRACKED PLASTIC PART CAUSED OIL TO LEAK OUT ON ENGINE AND EXHAUST CREATING A BURNING SMELL AND MY MECHANIC SAID IT IS A FIRE HAZARD. FOUND MANY OTHERS WITH SAME ISSUE FROM JEEP AND CHRYSLER PRODUCTS.
OIL LEAKING FROM ENGINE. MECHANIC SAID COULD BE DANGEROUS AS IT WAS GETTING ON THE EXHAUST AND COULD START A FIRE. DOING RESEARCH ON THIS WEBSITE, FOUND OUT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH A PLASTIC PART ON TOP OF THE ENGINES USED BY JEEP AND CHRYSLER. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED.
AIRBAG LIGHT APPEARS TO COME ON EVERY TIME I'M IN MOTION AND TURNS OFF WHEN I'M AT FULL STOP. I LOOKED AT THE NHTSA RECALL NOTICES AND SEEMS I HAVE INCOMPLETE RECALL REGARDING MY PASSENGER AIRBAG.
I HAD BOUGHT THE CAR FROM THE DEALERSHIP WITH 34,000 MILES ON IT AND WHEN I DROVE IT HOME OVER 500 MILES AWAY I NOTICED THE HEATER STARTED BLOWING COOL AIR ON THE DRIVER SIDE. THE PASSENGER SIDE WORKED FINE. AS DAYS WENT BY IT GOT WORSE AND THE DRIVER SIDE NOW COMPLETELY DOESN'T WORK. BUT THE PASSENGER SIDE DOES. I GOOGLED THIS AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE SAYING THE SAME THING. MOST PEOPLE POINTING TO THE HEATER CORE AND THAT SOMETHING BLOCKS ONE OF THE OUTLETS. MY LOCAL CHRYSLER/JEEP DEALERSHIP WANTED TO CHARGE ME FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. APPARENTLY OTHER PEOPLE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH EVEN LESS MILES ON THEIR JEEPS AND ALSO LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER BUYING THE JEEP. IT'S VERY FRUSTRATING KNOWING I HAVE A VERY LIGHTLY USED VEHICLE WITH MINIMAL MILEAGE WITH THIS KIND OF PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING AND STATIONARY WHILE IDLING.
CLOCKSPRING GOING OUT , CONTROLS ON STEERING WHEEL AND HORN NOT WORKING PLUS NO PART AVAILABLE UNDER THE PART # 05156106AC. NOW TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT IS ON AND WON'T CLEAR.
WHILE DRIVING ENGINE LOOSES POWER AND VIBRATES EXCESSIVELY, ENGINE LIGHT FLASHES DURING THIS PROCESS, AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS LIGHT GOES OUT AND ENGINE RESUMES NORMAL OPERATION. IT HAS DONE THIS MULTIPLE TIMES SOMETIMES ON STARTUP SOMETIMES STOPPED AT A LIGHT AND OTHER WHILE DRIVING.
