NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Jeep Wrangler. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
A deer jumped in front of me and the brakes locked up. The jeep spun 180 degrees before it stopped. Nothing was damaged and I traveled on. About a week later the ABS and traction control lights started blinking. Within a day they were solid and the cruise control stopped also. I researched and found the speed sensor was a common problem. I carried it to a ASE certified mechanic for the sensor to be replaced. The sensor was replaced but the lights didn’t go out. It was put on the computer and noted it was the ABS CONTROL MODULE part number 68259556AD. The problem is that the part is in such demand that it will take months to get it. So this seems to be a recurring issue for jeeps. I am now riding with no ABS because MOPAR can’t keep up with the demand.
Oil plug in engine gets brittle and fails by cracking. This cause a complete engine failure with only 36k miles on it. Mechanic says this is a known issue. I could not operate the vehichle and broke down without warning. I have a reciept for the nrand new engine.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30-45 MPH, the vehicle lost power. On another occasion, while driving at 20 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. While shifting into gear, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The check engine warning light illuminated after the failure. The driver was able to pull over safely. The vehicle was running, and the heat was functioning. The vehicle was towed to a AAA Service Center, where the filter and oil were changed; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was towed to AAA again, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
Recent ABS module failure w C2200 code. Took to Chrysler/Jeep dealer for repair and was told replacement module part is unavailable with up to and more, a year backorder. Was advised there was nothing they could do to repair. Researched other dealers and suppliers with same results. This is certainly a safety concern as this ABS module failure appears to be a common failure in Jeeps of this and adjacent model years and there is nothing a dealer or any other service firm can repair due to part availability.
I bought my 2017 jeep with 29,000 miles on it. I had an issue with the rear driverside brake locking up around 40,000 miles. I feel this is a safety issue due to how hot the brakes got and at times would be smoking. It being the weekend and my only vehicle, repaired myself for approximately $280. I have had to replace several coil packs around $50,000 miles. My main complaint today, at 66,000 miles it seems to be leaking oil. I took to mechanic this morning and was told this is a common problem with jeeps. The oil cooler housing is cracked and leaking. This part is made out of plastic. The repair for this is going to cost $1200 to $1500. I have read complaints regarding this issue and do not understand why this hasn't been recalled. This is a major safety concern and could possibly cause a fire. I have owned jeeps my whole life and as of today, I will never purchase another. The jeep brand has declined in reliability and has proved to be a huge financial mistake.
The ABS module in my 2017 Jeep Wrangler has stopped working 25 months ago and the display in on my dash warning lights glows constantly every time I turn the ignition on, even as I drive. This means my vehicle is lacking the safety features that are proven to help prevent accidents and as a result, deaths. I took it to the dealer immediately when the warning light presented in 2023. I was told the part in on back order and I'm on the list to receive a replacement asap. In the meantime, I have had several occasions with a very close miss from having an accident. The back order of this vital component causes great risk to me and my passengers, as well as anyone else near me on the road, despite my excellent driving record. The part is desired to reduce the chance of accident, so it's malfunctioning promotes the chance of an accident and needs to be addressed. I am one of thousands of customers experiencing this neglect. Please help.
The oil filter housing is made of plastic but holds hot oil, over time it cracks since plastic is not made to handle hot (oil) and cold (weather) cycles
Dear Sir(or Madam), The Left Rear Caliber is locking up AGAIN. We have changed 4 Rear Calibers, Rotors , Breaks and Brake Hoses and Two Sets of Front Calibers, Breaks, Rotors and Break Hoses and again the Caliber in the Rear Right is locking up again. This you would think is a Safety Hazard by now. We have owned three Wranglers and everyone of them had Brake Problems. I thought that maybe Jeep would have this problem solved by now. But am sure if NHTSA doesn't do anything then Jeep isn't going to do anything. This problem is costing us a arm and leg. I wish you at NHTSA would do something about this on going problem. Thank you.
The fenders front fenders become loss due to faulty plastic clips and flights off while driving once the wind catches under them. Very dangerous to other cars. Also the windshields crack around once a year and you have to really be-careful to stay back from any auto that might throw a rock, but you can’t avoid someone passing you.
Fuel tank valve control valve leak has small crack where fuel vapors are leaking affecting my fuel efficiency and causing a evap system ECL.
Every time the vehicle is filled with fuel it overfills and a large amount of fuel spills in the vehicle and ground. This is a safety concern which can lead to a fire unexpectedly. Upon inspection the fuel tank control valve has been found to be inoperative and can cause a fuel leak during a vehicle rollover event, debris in the fuel tank, and/or the ability to overfill the fuel tank during refueling. A fuel leak during a vehicle rollover event, in the presence of an ignition source, could cause a fire without warning and lead to death. The vehicle is not shown to have an outstanding recall though this year and model does have a recall for a limited number of the production.
Parts of the manual transmission are failing and appear in the bottom of the transmission when changing the fluid. It appears to be part of the synchro. This is apparently not uncommon for these manual transmissions. There were no warning lamps or messages indicating a failure or problem with the transmission. A transmission failure can startle a driver and cause an accident. It did not in this case.
Dear Sir (or Madam), We have a 2017 Wrangler Rubicon and we've change the rear Brake Hoses, Calibers, Rotors and Brakes twice due to the brake hoses collapsing and not letting the fluid return to the master cylinder. The first time it was covered the second time 1000 bucks. We have also replaced the front Brake Hoses, Calibers, rotors and brake due to the brake hose collapsing and not letting the fluid return to the master cylinder another 640 bucks. This is the third Wrangler we've owned and the same thing has happened on all 3 the rear hoses collapse and wont let the fluid return to the master cylinder. You would think that since it has to do with the brakes you at NHTSA would say its a hazard because the brakes lock up.
The ABS Module Failed while Driving. Yes it is available for inspection. The 2017 Jeep Wrangler stopped abruptly. Then it barely moved when I continued to press on the Accelerator pedal. Then it ran normal for about a mile, then it started jerking like I was depressing the brake pedal, intermittently. The safety of myself and others was put at risk by the sudden braking without any input from me. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by an independent service center. No, the vehicle has not been inspected by the Police, Manufacturer, or Insurance Representatives. The ABS lamp came on, as well as others. It has been at the service shop for one month. The owner of the shop told me that the "working" part is unavailable, right now. He is looking in Junkyards for a used part. I wrote an email to [XXX] " and they said that they're not working on Jeeps with this problem right now, because they can't get the "chips" (Micro processors). I called the Jeep Dealership, they told me that the part would cost me $371.70. Then I talked with the service Manager. He told me that installation and programming would cost me $490.00 + tax. That's a total of $861.70. Then he mentioned it could take 2 years, 1 year; or 6 Months to get the part. He said that he just got one in, and the lady had waited since February (8 Months) to get her part. Different year models require different versions of this part, and it is made in China. This shortage of ABS Modules has been going on for years! I have done multiple searches on the internet, and I found that there are thousands of people with this problem. I also found out that the ABS modules for sale on Amazon and Ebay do NOT work. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
For about 6 months now, the abs control module has been bad. Leaving every light regarding braking on the dashboard and no safety features, such as abs, skid control, ect ect . The parts for this have beem on back order over a year now and there are tons of people experiencing the same issue as I. My vehicle only had 63000 miles when it failed. ( code c2200, abs internal failure) . Many people have experienced failure with way less miles. This is not a use failure, but rather a factory defect as these are a known issue. There needs to be a safety recall on the module and have it replaced. Thank you
It randomly will not start and will need a jump start to get going. My safety has been put at risk due to not being able to start the car while in unfamiliar locations. I have had fhe battery and alternator checked and both came back with no issue. No symptoms. Just the issue of not starting even after driving around all day. There’s no pattern when it comes to knowing if it will start or not.
ABS and Traction Control lights are on. Sometimes Emergency Brake light comes on causing it to go into “limp mode”. This is dangerous for me bc this is my Mail Jeep. I’m driving on roads where the speed limits are sometimes posted at 55mph. Mechanic replaced the rear wheel sensors because the computer indicated that was the problem. Did not fix the problem. The ABS Module has to be replaced and they’re on back order. Forums online have many different people stating they’re having the same problem with JEEP. JEEP parts department stating it could be a year or more before the part comes in and is available.
The clock spring has failed. There is a current recall for the clock spring mechanisms in the 2011-2016 Jeep Wranglers. The vehicle has been inspected by a mechanic who informed me of the recall to begin with. The fuse for the clock spring (along with all the other fuses) are working as normal. There was no warning lights prior to the clock spring failure (however, I've been told that it's normal). The issue arose on 08/07/25. The 'step' button, 'reset' button, channel change paddle, volume change paddle, and the horn don't work. The airbag also might not work (haven't tested it out frankly). The cruise control buttons seem to work however I don't use cruise control in this vehicle. The vehicle is a 2017 RHD Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport.
I am on my 4th set of front brake calipers. the last 3 have been replaced at a Wyler Jeep 5881 Gender Rd. Canal Winchester, Ohio 43110...Phone 614-834-6080 and now I am having issues with my left front brake again... This has been in for this service the following times 5/15/2023(could not drive due to brakes locking up) 5/162023 7/5/2023 3/4/2025 (was told not to drive) and now I have to take back up 7/11/2025... I have contacted Jeep and I have a Case #[XXX] The past 3 times they were put on for free under part warranty, and I did receive a courtesy vehicle to drive... I don't want to continue to do this every year or two INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The ABS module was diagnosed as the cause of multiple warning lights appearing on the dashboard, including the ABS light, parking brake light, and traction control light. According to an ASE certified technician, the failure of the ABS module disabled the antilock braking system as well as the cruise control feature. This issue resulted in loss of antilock braking function and reduced overall vehicle safety. The problem was identified and confirmed by a qualified technician. These warning lights first appeared prior to the failure being diagnosed. At this time, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) replacement part is on at least a three-month backorder.
May 14, 2025 Dear NHTSA, I am submitting this complaint regarding my 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, which has only 60,000 miles and has already required several major repairs that raise serious safety concerns. To date, I have had to replace three brake calipers and the emergency brake, at a cost of over $2,500. The calipers were seizing, and the emergency brake would not release properly, both of which posed clear risks while driving. I understand through forums and peer discussions that other owners have faced similar issues. In addition, my vehicle now has an oil leak that will cost over $700 to repair, and the windshield washer fluid hose burst, requiring another replacement. These repeated failures on a relatively low-mileage vehicle suggest underlying quality and reliability issues. I believe these concerns warrant review, particularly the safety-related brake defects. I respectfully ask NHTSA to investigate whether these failures are part of a broader pattern that may justify further scrutiny or a formal recall. Thank you for your attention.
On May 9, 2025 I was driving down the road and the engine shutdown. I was lucky not to be in much traffic and pulled off the road (no power steering or brakes). Had I been in a left lane on a freeway this is very dangerous and I could have been rear ended. I was just told that a replacement TIPM will not be available until July 9, 2025. This must be failing at a high rate, if it takes almost 2 months to get a new TIPM, and follows 2 or 3 previous recalls by you for the same failure on previous years.
Vehicle had a DTC P0302 and a misfire at idle. Upon diagnosis cylinder #2 was found to have 80psi compression which is significantly lower than compression in all other cylinders. Cylinder head was found to be bad. This vehicle only has 61,303 miles. There are many owners complaining about the same problem and FCA indicated they fixed the head issues in 2013. They have offered an extended warranty for 2011-2013 vehicle but the issue still exists. The warranty should be expanded to include more year models.
Cruise control was not working. The Jeep would also idle too fast when stopped but not get to the proper speed while driving. ABS brake light was on with code that rear wheel brake sensor was not working. Sensor was replaced but it still doesn't work. C. Harper Jeep garage in Connellsville, PA says the ABS module is bad and not supplying power to the wheel sensors. This part is supposedly on back order with no known time of availability. The fuel injector also needed replaced but not sure what caused that problem. Other 2017 Jeeps had recalls for electrical problems but seems that my vin was not, maybe it should have been!
I was traveling down the street in my town going about 40-45 and all of a sudden the dash lights came on and there was no control of the Jeep. I happened to be close to my mechanic shop so we got it there. No one was hurt but there was no warning that the abs module had gone out. I had to have it towed to a Jeep dealership in Topeka. Ks where it still sits 6 weeks later due to Jeep/ Mopar holding it hostage with no resolution to the ABS module shortage. I am being told there are none in production and there is no ETA for production and shipment.
While folding and folding rear seats the middle seat belt snapped at the anchor.
After dash lights came on, my issue was diagnosed as an ABS module failure by my mechanic. Jeep offers no repair. Options are limited and expensive. I’m driving on 1985 brakes until repaired. I understand this is a problem common to JK models and has been occurring for years.
While Driving ABS, Brake, and Traction Control lights came on simultaneously. Had error codes read and was issuing a C2200 error signifying that ABS control module had failed. Contacted local Dealership to obtain part and was informed by Martin Dodge in Cleveland Texas that the part was not being manufactured because of an engineering issue. Am concerned that this is an issue for all similar vehicles that use the same module and am driving a vehicle without all of its safety features available or even repairable at this time.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle or while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the valves and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the engine was not under warranty. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 47,000.
My seat belt is always loose and i have to jam it back in place all the time. I noticed an oil spot on the floor of my garage and it looks like it's the oil cooler housing that is bad. Both of these items are recalled but my vin shows It's not.
My jeep has just started this problem going lower speeds and hitting a bump in the road. All of the sudden my jeep will start to shake violently and will not stop until I slow way down almost to a stop. It is happening approx. 8 to 15 times every day now. I no longer can go even one day without this happening. I believe it is called the death wobble. the shaking is so bad that it has steered me into oncoming traffic twice. I don't even want to drive it anymore and I love my jeep. I am frustrated because i have a 2017 jeep wrangler with a 09/2017 manufacture date and Jeep offered a recall on 2018 and 2019 Jeeps but not mine.
Transmission clunking when changing gears, while my abs light is on. The break pedals rumble and the car is scary to drive. These issues are with a faulty abs control module.
Power stop brake hose kit was recalled do to leaks part# BH00139 Amazon order # 112-6473860 / 113-5400733 Recall report 24E-053 Front hose began to leak causing me to loose pressure in the brake system and loosing brakes. Had to have the brake lines replaced
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle started to lose motive power. The oil change soon warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and the independent mechanic informed the contact that the oil and coolant needed to be replaced or could cause damage to the engine. The independent mechanic informed the contact that he had experienced the failure with his vehicle due to the failure. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered the contact an extended satisfaction warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
The oil cooler leaks and the oil runs down the intake valley, down the back of the engine, and onto the frame and the exhaust pipe, this can create a fire hazard under the driver's seat. It also causes oil puddles on the ground which is a hazard. The dealer says oil cooler leaks are the most common issues on the Chrysler/Jeep 3.6L engine. I was told by the dealer, when making an appointment for replacement, that they have to change these oil coolers a ridiculous number of times. I can safely assume that thousands of people are having this same issue, by the amount of blogs, videos and beware when buying warnings and the fact that there are hundreds of aftermarket options for this item. This leak is going to cost me $1,000 to have fixed because they did not engineer it properly, not to mention cleaning the undercarriage and my driveway. Send me a rebate to cover my cost on this flawed engineering issue please!

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while the vehicle was at the independent mechanic for a State Inspection, the contact was informed that the fuel tank control valve was cracked. Additionally, an abnormally strong fuel odor was inside the vehicle. The independent mechanic related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V849000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 17,548.
Rear view camera went blank
Brakes keep dragging, getting hot and seizing. I have done four complete brake jobs and the vehicle has only 40,000 miles on it. Most recent time the wheel rim was so hot you couldn’t put your hand on it. Cost so far, over $6,000. Google searches indicate that this is a recurring issue on this model and year.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the transmission independently shifted out of reverse(R). The contact immediately grabbed the gear shifter immediately and shifted back into reverse(R). The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission crankshaft and drive train had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure returned several weeks later. The vehicle was taken to another certified mechanic, was diagnosed it with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact learned that the transmission had been replaced by the previous owner at 9,588 miles in 2019. The vehicle was not repaired again. The dealer was contacted and notified of the failure. The dealer had not diagnosed or repaired the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 37,000.
Have the rear axle gears chipping/breaking off. Have mentioned this several times to dealer and they said the noise is normal for Jeeps. Took to independent repair shop and he found the gear issue, and asked me if anyone has worked on this rear end before, which would be no. He stated it looks as if someone has broke the original seal on it. I bought it at Performance CJDR in Delaware Ohio, and I'm wondering if something happened to it before I took ownership of vehicle. In process of repair at Bobbitt's Automotive repair in Lancaster Ohio... On my oil changes, the Rear Differential has always been checked OK... Now that vehicle is out of Power train Warranty this happens... My feeling is that this was always an issue with this vehicle, and was being covered up
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 30 MPH, the driver's side front brake locked up. The contact stated that his wife had not observed any warning lights being illuminated. The vehicle was driven back to the residence. The vehicle was stopped and parked, and the contact stated that there was smoke coming from the driver's side front wheel well. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 91,914.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the service brakes warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with a failure to the frontal impact sensor. The contact was informed that the frontal impact sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000. The VIN was not available.
Driving on Highway multiple times 60-65 mph hit a bump or groove on highway jeep start wobble so bad couldn't hardly control it. July 08, 2024 driving on highway 60-65 mph crossing bridge with grooves or small bump jeep went into wobble, steering wheel flipped upside down I grab tight as it is wobbling to left turning trying not to hit truck as i had no steering control hit another bump thank god and it push to the right and I was able to got to side off highway.. As I am trying to figure whats wrong I look underneath jeep and bar bolted to frame broke frame of 2017 jeep rubicon unlimited.. I had looked at and told that it was very lucky and need to take to jeep dealership frame so weak it can be bent by hand. So please I am thankful it was just me in the vehicle and thankful for the second bump that steered me to the right and i did not hit the truck next to me with kids in it. .
Transmission failure.
The brakes kept grinding and squealing even after we changed them, next the rotors and calipers were done. Then again one by one everything needed to be replaced and still didn't take and we kept smelling burning coming from the tires. We then replaced the master cylinder and the brake lines and still it won't take. I looked it up and there are countless complaints on this and Chrysler/Jeep do nothing about this huge safety risk ! Answers to your questions 1. Braking system as a whole and yes it can't move 2. If you do not have brakes in a vehicle you cannot stop so unsafe for the driver and everyone on the road bc of collision. 3. Yes my mechanic has re done this job multiple times and agrees there is a defect going on, not normal. 4. I did not know I needed my insurance or the police involved, the dealership is a joke. 5. No warning sensors or a heads up, just does it.
Recurrent transmission pan gasket leaking. Repaired and replaced pan and gasket in March 2024 and reoccurred December 2024. Uploaded March Report, currently at dealer for repair 2nd incident now. Vehicles manufactured Nov 2016 had a recall for this same issue but this vehicle wasn’t included due to it being a couple months manufactured. Likely should have been included.
While driving in city or highway the engine will shut off randomly, causing the steering almost impossible to turn. Had a few close calls because of this. There is no check engine light to come on.
The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, he heard an abnormal ticking sound emanating from the engine compartment, after which the vehicle lost significant motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway. After a visual inspection, the contact observed an oil leak underneath the engine compartment. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the piston in cylinder #3. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 52,000.
We were driving home from about a location an hour away. We were almost to our home when the transmission started to slip. The hot oil light came on as we were trying to ascend our hill where we live. We all of the sudden saw flames coming out the side of the vehicle. We were able to exit the vehicle and get to safety but the jeep burned completely to the ground. There was only 60k miles on it and it had been well maintained.
