NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2021 Jeep Wrangler. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V787000 (Electrical System) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
FROM JEEP - "An internally failed HV battery could lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off. A vehicle fire can result in increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the vehicle, as well as property damage. Customers are advised to refrain from recharging these vehicles and not to park them inside of buildings or structures, or near other vehicles until the vehicle has the final repair completed." First: I live in Philadelphia and DO NOT have the ability to park away from structures, buildings or other vehicles. The jeep 4xe is capable of lighting on fire at ANY POINT and there is nothing I can do to reduce my risk. The recall has been made public since Nov 22,2023 and there is still no lead on a fix nearly 3 months later. Second: These are plug in hybrid vehicles that are of premium cost for the plug in/electric feature. Losing the ability to charge them greatly reduces the use and value of the vehicle. This is by far the worst recall I have ever seen and am dumbfounded that I now sit here nearly 100 days after the recall with no further instruction or lead on a solution. Jeep should be forced to compensate and provide a reasonable alternative until the solution is established.
- What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? High voltage battery may fail internally - How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? An internally failed HV battery could lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off. - Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? MFG & NHTSA recall B9A/23V-787 22 Nov 2024 - Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, There is no remedy from the mfg at this time of submission. Recommendations from the manufacturer is: 1. refrain from recharging the vehicle; 2. not to park inside of buildings or structures, or 3. near other vehicles until the vehicles has the final repair completed.--> It has been over 6 months since this issue has been known and there is not remedy. Not having access to the primary function of propulsion for such a long length of time is unacceptable and should prompt either a repair (which is not available, replacement vehicle; refund, or some other form of compensation. The mfg has already denied my claim for replacement/refund of the vehicle.
Was informed of this recall back in November of 2023. It is approximately 3 months later, and the dealership has heard nothing from Stellantis about how to repair this recall. I also have heard nothing from Stellantis. In the mean time, I cannot fully use the vehicle in the manner it was made, which is why I made the purchase.
My Jeep has had an open recall for 6 months. No parts available. Was told parts are now available. Was scheduled for appointment on 11/17/23 at local dealer (Montgomery Jeep in Nicholasville, KY). They called and cancelled my appointment and said Stellantis requiring that we use the only recall kit we have in stock to update the unsold vehicle that we have on the lot. They will not allow us to order the parts for your Jeep until we update the one on the lot." Since the law says "you can deliver but not sell a new vehicle with an open recall" it is clear that Stellantis is putting units at a dealership ahead of units already in the hands of customers.
At about 44,000 miles driving over 60-65 , going over a bump, or going around a curve at.a slower speed the jeep would violently shake, where you almost lose control. I took to the shop they replaced tie rod ends, drag link, track bar and that didn’t solve the issue they now replaced the something with steering and it’s better but still shakes a little when changing lanes. It is honestly the scariest thing ever. Something isn’t right and should be looked into, I am Not the only one with this issue and soon as my lease is up I am getting rid of it. Keep in mind I live in MN and have done NO off-roading. Someone is going to crash of these issues do not get fixed
While driving on the Interstate at 65 mph I experienced a severe side-to-side shaking of the steering wheel. This included the entire front-end of the vehicle shimmying and visibly vibrating. If I didn't have a good grip on the steering wheel at the time, we would likely have crashed. This appears to be the "death wobble" described in numerous online forums and subject of a previous recall on 2018 and 2019 Jeep Wrangler models. Obviously, this problem still exists on 2021 models. The event seems to be precipitated by any small bump or change in pavement such as passing over a bridge on the Interstate. There was no prior warning of this event. Total vehicle mileage is 45000 and temperature was 45 degrees. There are no modifications to the vehicle and it remains completely stock. The wobble occurred repeatedly until I could get off the Interstate.
Car shudders and wobbles on freeway speeds when it hits seams or bumps in the road. Has steering stabilizer replaced in Feb 2023, which temporarily solved the problem. It has since started doing it again. The car has 20,000 miles on it.
While driving on the Interstate at 70 mph I experienced a severe side-to-side shaking of the steering wheel. This included the entire front-end of the vehicle shimmying and visibly vibrating. 1. Track bar and tie rod front suspension. 2. It causes high speed death wobble. Steering wheel and whole front end of 2021 Jeep wrangler shakes violently and unable to control jeep without slowing way down while on interstate. 3. No. I called the dealership and they said tuff luck, no warranty. I have 50K miles on Jeep wrangler. 4. No. 5. No. First appeared with 50k miles on Jeep and driving on interstate.

The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the front passenger's side seat failed to lock into position and was sliding back and forth. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 23-021-22 (Front Seat Will Not Unfold and Lock into Position); however, the vehicle was not covered under the Technical Service Bulletin. The failure mileage was approximately 16,000.
I've confirmed with the my Jeep dealer and the NHTSA that there's a safety recall for the battery on my Wrangler 4xe possibly catching fire. There's currently no remedy. It's the third recall on this vehicle. I'm also wondering why Jeep or anyone has contacted me about this. I had to find out on the internet then make phone calls to confirm. Telling us to no park our cars next to building or other cars is unrealistic. Like where?? up in the mountains? We are in southern California. I'd like some answers very fast. NHTSA Safety Issue ID: 23V787000 Open safety recall with NO FIX. Dealership will not give me a rental car. My car is at risk of starting on fire per the OPEN RECALL what has NO FIX. My family goes in this car and my son is secured in a child restraint seat. If it starts on fire I will not be able to save his life. I also cannot charge it and I bought the PHEV for fuel savings This recall has been open since November 2023 and it’s now 4 months later with NO FIX. My car has 20k miles still under the full factory bumper to bumper warranty and FCA is refusing to help me with a rental car and or car payments.
jeep was unable to remedy this issue for 6 months, since November 2023. I called and they gave me the run around. They wanted to charge me fees to rent a car instead of driving mine and I paid $600/month as a premium to have a EV just to have to fill it up with gas because they didn't have any remedy for 6 months.

When driving at highway speeds and hit a slight dip in the road, or a gap in the roadway, or a hole, the front end wobbles violently as well as the steering wheel. The only way to stop the wobbling and make the vehicle controllable again is to slow way down. This is dangerous on the highway and may cause an accident.
Death wobble occurs almost daily and multiple times a day when going over bump. Seems to happen when going over 40mph. Steering doesn’t stabilize until almost completely stopping. A few times, needed to pull over and stop vehicle to get the wobble to stop.

I took this jeep to the dealer and they repaired it per my invoice. I am still receiving messages that the recall is still open from corporate jeep. The NHTSA also says the recall is still open. I called the dealer and they can’t help me or see no recall?
At 27,000 miles, bought brand new the “death wobble” started. I plan to take to dealership next week. I have no known if this issue but from research it’s a major issue in wranglers. This is a safety hazard. No one should be driving this vehicle with this issue. I bought brand new so I wouldn’t have to deal with issues such as this. I’ve never taken it off roading. Only highway.
The contact stated that while driving at speeds of 50 MPH or more, the vehicle would experience the death wobble. The vehicle would also suddenly lose motive power. The contact would coast to the side of the road and attempt to restart the vehicle. The vehicle sometimes restarted in battery mode or hybrid mode. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the front axle failed. The vehicle had been repaired. The vehicle was returned to the dealer however, there was no repair completed due to the recall remedy being unavailable. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 5,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
I own a 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe – VIN: [XXX] . I previously brought the vehicle in for a recall related to the high-voltage battery. Months later, I received another safety notice instructing me not to charge the vehicle and to park it outdoors away from structures due to fire risk. This indicates the original recall service did not resolve the defect. My vehicle is currently unable to perform its intended function (EV charging/commuting functionality) and may pose a safety hazard when parked. I am requesting NHTSA oversight to ensure FCA/JEEP provides an available remedy and that owners are informed and supported. When driving on the highway, the vehicle would shake uncontrollably when i hit a bump. Also know as the death wobble. I took my Jeep to the dealer for evaluation. The dealer recommended that the steering damper be replaced along with some additional parts. I have mechanical breakdown coverage with Geico and a service plan with Autonation. I also contacted Jeep Cares as the death wobble is a know problem with Jeeps. Jeep Cares would not assist with the repair because I had mechanical breakdown coverage with my auto insurance policy. My mechanical breakdown coverage thru Geico has a $250 deductible which I am responsible for with any repair. Jeep told me that steering damper was on backorder with an ETA of 30-45 days or longer. They then told me that I could pick up my car and drive it as long as I stayed under 50 miles. I told them this option would not work for me because I drive 30 miles to and from work each day. Jeep then told me that they would look for an OEM replacment. The OEM replacment was successful but I had to pay an additional $90 for the part as my mechanical breakdown coverage only covered the cost for the part from Jeep. At the end of the day I am out of $340 plus dollars for a known Jeep issue. Jeep needs to stand behind their problem regardless of mileage. This is a serious problem.
My vehicle shook violently while in operation, no indicator or warning lights came on. I called the dealership for an appt and did some research on the issue. Service department found the steering dampner to be weak and replaced it. Jeep has 13,088 miles, out of warranty 5 days prior to service call. Incident happened 3 days after warranty expiration. Jeep has never been off-road. I have the dampner that was removed, no one has looked at it except the service department. The problem was confirmed by the dealer rep as calling it the "Death Wobble". My safety and others were put at risk by my having to divert my attention from the road to my jeep, turn on Emergency flashers and ease my jeep out of traffic. Then I had to slowly and cautiously ease back into traffic to get to the right side of the highway. This happened 2 more times before I was able to get home.
Took my vehicle in on 10/16/2023 to the Morgan Hill Jeep store where I bought the vehicle indicating that vehicle was unsafe to drive due to shaky front end suspension. Was told that the tech could not verify my complaint but they replaced the steering damper under a recall. Shortly after, vehicle continued to shake over bumps and uneven pavement to the point that on 06/07/2025 on a 2 hour road trip the shakes became so violent that the car is undriveable. Dropped the vehicle off at the nearest location, Stevens Creek Chrysler Jeep. I have a video taken to show the severity of the issue. Now being told that the repair is not covered under warranty even though it was brought to their attention at 22,778 miles within the warranty period, and various multivehicle inspections were performed during the warranty period after this suggesting no issues. There are many known cases and various lawsuits and extension of warranty periods for this issue for model years previous. I believe my vehicle was built during that period.
When driving above 50mph, when I drive over a road seam, the car shakes almost uncontrollably. I have to slow down to make the car stop shaking. I have brought the car to Jeep service THREE TIMES in a period of 12 months. Still having the same issue. It is very dangerous. I cannot rely on this car (only 3 years old) to drive on a highway. Very dangerous!!
Death wobble started last week, took in for warranty service today and technician replicated issue. Conflicting info received that replacement part is backorder yet Mopar site says part is in stock and ready to ship. Dealership said to pick the vehicle up and wait for part to be received for repair.

My Jeep has the 3.0 ecodiesel engine and there are two batteries. One battery is huge and powers all the components on my vehicle. The second battery is tiny and considered an auxiliary battery. It is located in a place that I can not get too, and can not check to see if its good or bad. However, as soon as it has any issues it will keep the Jeep from starting up. If you are out in the country or in the middle of nowhere then you will be stranded. It does not matter if the larger battery is working perfectly, the auxiliary battery will disable the entire vehicle anyway. This is a huge safety issue for obvious reasons. According to Jeep forums over the internet, this is a very common issue on all Jeeps with two batteries. It would be nice to take the auxiliary battery out, but Jeep engineered the two batteries to disable the entire vehicle if the auxiliary battery dies. Poor engineering? Perhaps! I would suggest there be a recall and that Jeep be forced to take the auxiliary battery out and re-wire the electrical system to allow vehicles to start regardless of the auxiliary battery. Some customers might want to keep the auxiliary battery cause it plays a part with the auto-start system. I would like to remove the battery and the auto-start all together and still have a functioning vehicle. I don't want to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere where I have no cellphone service.
Front end shakes violently at moderately high speeds.
While driving down highway at 65 mph the front end and steering wheel began shaking violently after driving over a bump. This happened multiple times and every time is initiated by a road bump. Unable to properly steer Jeep when this happens. Only way to stop vibrations/wobble is to reduce speed to almost a complete stop. As there were vehicles around me, this put me in a precarious position as I tried to slow down and get over to road shoulder to avoid a collision.
I was casually driving home from work in a 35 MPH zone on a standard road. When my 2021 jeep wranglers 4xe (30,000 miles exactly) ABS, and electronic brake stabilizer warning lights came on. I touched the brake and they were non-responsive. I then continued to press the brakes all the way to the floor multiple times and there was no response. I was able to pull the emergency brake to bring the vehicle to an immediate halt in the middle of the road and have a tow truck come ASAP. Service the next day said all the warning lights are gone and that they do not see any history of the errors. This issue posed extreme risk for myself and my pregnant wife. The car is still at the service specialist as i requested additional diagnosis be performed.
My 2021 4XE Wrangler Rubicon has already had the Loss of Motive Power Recall performed a year ago. Jeep stated that the recall software update would prevent this incident. It is not corrected!!! Yesterday, while traveling on I-70 near Virginia at about 70 mph (the speed limit), the Jeep displayed a Jeep Vehicle with the PHEV High Voltage Cables and Battery Pack Diagram drawn over the Jeep in Bright Red color. No codes happened at all when this appeared (no Check Engine Light, no service indicators, nothing). Some words quickly flashed on the dash display stating something like, "Loss of Performance" and the engine shutdown completely and the "D" next to shifter binked yellow continuously afterwards. The dash then stated to Shift Vehicle into Park to Restart (while still coasting at nearly 70 mph). I managed to coast it to the emergency lane, stop the Jeep, shift into park and restart. It then would not run even remotely normal, because it was in a safety mode of some sort. Again, with the engine running completely erratically, no coding at all. When I pressed the accelerator like normal, it would not respond at all (even putting it to the floor had no affect). I had to figure out how to get the accelerator to work so I could drive it back home. I had to gently press the pedal to get it to respond and then the Jeep would not go above about 2500 RPM. It would force itself to slow down if it reached any higher RPM. I went to the local Jeep Dealership ASAP today and was told nothing was recorded in the computer, software is up to date, and there is nothing wrong with my Jeep. This is a serious problem and has to be diagnosed and fixed!!!!
While driving down Highway at 70MPH hit bridge connector gap while in Slight Left turn and front end on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Sport started to Shimmy wildly. Was controllable and as I slowed below 55 and it stopped. Happened several times during 70 mile trip and each time I was able to slow the vehicle and recover. Researched complaint on Internet and saw similar complaints of death wobble with Wranglers since 2008. Just wanted to confirm the issue still remains and has not been corrected. This could cause inexperienced drivers to panic and wreck or worse yet cause an real accident while they try to asses the situation. Since the problem has been around so long I'd ask why nothing has been done to correct the issue permanently. If its due to solid axel, then maybe that needs to be replaced. There is no reason to have such a huge safety issue remain open for such an extended period of time unchanged.
Please hold Jeep accountable for their lack of remedy for this clutch safety recall that they have done zero about.

I discovered this safety recall Nov. 2023. The recall was opened 2/2023. I found an article in Car and Driver from 2/2021 that described this issue. Jeep leased me this vehicle even though the defect was already known. I am 3 years into a 4 year lease. Because of this inactivity is solving this recall (and a bad case of "Death Wobbles) I want to terminate this lease without penalty. I just want to get rid of this unsafe vehicle.
Severe car shaking when hitting bump at freeway speed. Diagnosed as the “death wobble” continued to happen more frequently and severely
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at various highway speeds, the steering wheel and front end of the vehicle would shake and vibrate after driving over a bump in the roadway. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer. No further information was available. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 19,000.
3 incidents of “death wobble,” first time between 4-5,000 miles and again in October and November of 2023. I’m waiting for another damper as the one they received is leaking. Also, discovered leaking shock absorber. Dangerous and terrifying as you fell like you’ll lose control of your vehicle! I’m going on being out of pocket for car rentals for 5 weeks, although reimbursed it’s still out of pocket initially. I’ve twice been told “it’s fixed!” and it’s happened again! Happens on any slight pavement change and at higher speeds 60-65 mph. The battery recall just came in and complicates my safety and confidence in this vehicle. Unacceptable that it can’t be near other vehicles, charged or stored in my garage!
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V767000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The sensor witch detects if the front and rear differential lockers is engaged or not has quit working. Once I looked into it, the sensor was full of diff oil causing it to stop working. I then found out it has been such a big issue that Jeep has a National back order on the part to replace it. The parts were found to be leaking in almost all Jeeps tested. That component is a major part to the off-road capability. I found myself in the back of my local national forest and unable to get unstuck because I drove through mud that would have been no problem if my lockers work functioning properly. If it weren’t for me owning an emergency satellite transponder I honestly don’t know how myself and my twelve year old would have made it out. I live in the middle of grizzly bears. Spoke to Jeep and was told “they know it’s a major issue but won’t fix them until told to do so”
Part z96 high pressure fuel pump was recalled over a year ago with no parts or fix. I had been calling every 2-3 months to check and was informed the fix was not available. Over a month ago, the fuel pump failed and the car shut off while I was driving. Metal was sent through the entire fuel system. The whole fuel system needs replaced and the Jeep sits at the dealer with no parts available.
Driving on I-91 at 60-65 mph and steering wheel locked up making vehicle control impossible. I could have collided with multiple vehicles, was lucky enough that vehicle swerved off exit ramp and jumped a curb into a nearby gas station. Cautiously drove vehicle to nearby dealership and currently onsite under evaluation by Chrysler corporate. There was an intermittent warning light to service the " gear shifter" a few months before but dealer could not find code when vehicle examined so dismissed until happening again. This incident affected me emotionally and I'm now hesitant to drive this vehicle post repair on the highway.
