NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2021 Jeep Wrangler. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
On 9/16 I went to leave for work for the day and my car would not start. The auto stop start system was illuminated with a warning. A neighbor jumstarted to car for me. I drove to my dealership where I was told both of my batteries had failed and I would need to replace them. I replaced both. Upon leaving the dealership my stop start was still showing a warning. I was told it would go off after driving for a few days. It did not. I returned to the dealership on 9/25 to see what was wrong. The code the vechicle was giving was low battery. I was told it was a software update and was sent on my way. This issue with my vechicle par of a RRT21-077 dated 6/24/21. I was never notified of this by Jeep. I was told when I brought this to their attention that because this probelem did not occur within 18 months of the bulletin my issue would not be covered. I am concerned that this issue will happen again and leave me stranded without power, as clearly it is an issue with this model.
I’m reaching out due to a severe issue with my Wrangler 4xe Rubicon that has left me stranded twice in 2 weeks. The vehicle is shutting down, without warning, and is not able to re-start, so you can just imagine that the circumstances could be far more dire or outright life-threatening had this happened in a remote location or a dangerous high-traffic area. Both times the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership. Even more troubling is that the root cause of the malfunction (OBD CODE: P0BBD HYBRID BATTERY VOLTAGE VARIATION EXCEEDED LIMIT) has yet to be diagnosed, despite the vehicle being serviced for the better part of a week, only to suddenly refuse to start just 3 days after getting it back — again, leaving me stranded. Multiple attempts to reach Jeep executives over several days has yielded no response. All my safety recalls have been addressed so Jeep has told me this vehicle was safe to drive before these incidents. Additionally, the vehicle was in the shop for the better part of 2 weeks earlier this year with a battery heater malfunction. I work in emergency surgery and if I don't have a reliable vehicle to respond to emergencies, patients can literally die. That is not hyperbole, its reality.
There is now some slippage in 2nd and 3rd gear The recall was re-issued in March of 2023. There has been no remedy nor any other offer to allow for a customer instigated solution to this dangerous problem since then.
When driving and you hit a slight bump, the steering wheel and front end shakes violently. The only way to gain control of the vehicle is to slow down. This happens frequently if you are driving on a highway that has ridges or bumps.
While driving the "Service Shifter" warning appeared in the center cluster notification area repeatedly. There was reduced vehicle performance and a continuous chime alert from the vehicle. Turned the vehicle off, waited several minutes and then turned the vehicle back on and the "Service Shifter" warning appeared again with the continuous chime audio alert.
My car was called in for a recall. The dealership stated they don’t have the correct software to update the issue but said to come back when they do. They never fixed my vehicle and now it’s howling my recall was fixed. But my car is still having the electrical issue and it almost shut off on the freeway.
Check Engine Light and Excessive Engine Coolant Leak; Inspected by a manufacturer dealer and seller dealership; Initial dealer stated it wasn't drivable due to the amount of coolant leaking as part of the tubing was melted due to improperly being afixed and being to close to the exhaust; Yes. The same issue was reported 3 times before the issue I had in regards to the check engine light and a recall on the coolant leak was indicated to be fixed in March 2023 but continued to be an issue now; Warning light for the check engine appeared the same day I brought the vehicle in.
When I was driving normally the service shifter, service electronic stability control, auto park disabled error message displayed. Also the traction control light, parking brake light and the cargo light all turned on. Then lost power steering, at full speed. Tried to safely pull off the road. Coasted to a stop, where I then lost all power to the vehicle. Was unable to restart. Had it towed to Jeep dealership, for further inspection. The third time for the same issue. With no resolution or repairs. As they say, they can not reproduce the catastrophic failure. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer. It happened so suddenly I barely had time to pull over. If I was driving in the middle lane or on highways. I would have lost power steering, and stopped in the middle of the road. At higher rates of speed or other circumstances. It could have caused serious injuries, or even deaths. I am no longer comfortable driving this vehicle. For risk of personal injury or death, and being a danger to other drivers on the road.
I went to the dealership. They said since there were no lights or messages on dashboard they really couldn’t do anything. I insisted on them looking at it and they scheduled an appointment a week later. They said I have to leave the car with them for a week so they can look at it. They won’t give me a loaner to drive and they are short staffed so the car just sits on their lot for a week. This is completely unacceptable. There was no sense of urgency on something that could’ve turned into a tragic accident driving on the highway in Chicago. I took the car home. It was driving ok this week until today Saturday 8/27, my appointment is for Monday and car is completely dead and won’t start.

The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Serious steering wobble while driving on highway in Denver at approx. 65 mph yesterday plus same serious wobble at lower speed (~60 mph) while passing car on country road. Took nearly a mile to stop the wobble and speed reduction to around 35 mph to stop! Very dangerous situations in both cases.
March of 2023. Vehicle started hesitating and skipping. P0001 was logged. Dealership found terminals to connector to fuel pressure regulator were not crimped properly and loose. Repair was made. Aug 2023. Symptom have resurfaced this time logging code and shutting off while accelerating through an intersection. Logged code again P0001 Fuel Volume Regulator Control Circuit/Open.
Fuel Sensor is way off. Have ran out of gas less than 2 mins after dropping below a 38 mile range twice now. Drive 20 miles round trip everyday and go through a 60 mile range on my vehicle. I watch the range decrease by four or five miles while in idle.
Today doing approximately 65 to 70 miles per hour on highway 20 in Ft Worth just hit approximately 1 1/2 inch transition in pavement where they had added an extra layer of asphalt in the lane I was in the vehicle started wabbeling so bad I thought it was going to change lanes, approximately 10 miles later it did the same thing again felt like the front wheels were about to come off the vehicle. I have called Meador Jeep in Ft Worth and they recommended I park the Jeep and not drive it until they can get it in and check it on 8-25-23
Persistent death wobble vehicle is stock with no modifications. Driving at 65 on the highway a single small bump will cause violent shaking of the steering wheel and the front end. The shaking is aggressive enough to make you lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident. The vehicle has been for service multiple times for this issue. Every time the issue persist without resolve.

The Engine light came on 3 weeks ago and I took it to the auto shop to find out what is wrong. P1547 is the code that the auto mechanic told me was coming up on the scan. He said it could be the gas cap so I had that replaced, but the light came back on in 2 days. He said that this is the 2nd Jeep Wrangler he has seen with the same engine light and code and believes it has something to do with the fuel system. My Jeep is less than 3 years old and only has 22,556 miles on it. I have only driven it around town and on the highways. Have taken very good care of the vehicle and have replaced the oil as directed. This has to be a manufacturers error and something that is quite concerning if it has to do with the fuel system. Please advise on how to proceed. I will be reaching out to Jeep corporate office as well to let them know about this issue and to see which service center they would like me to take the vehicle to. Power steering unexpectedly stopped working while going 55 mph. I’m learning there are others that deal with this issue so I decided to file a complaint as I’m not expecting Jeep to fix the issue. After safely pulling over, I power cycled the Jeep and the power steering was restored. Has only happened once, but fully expecting it to happen again. Losing power steering at high speeds is one thing, but turning the Jeep at low speeds was extremely difficult and extremely unsafe.
My rear locker is trying to lock while driving in 2H causing the light to flash constantly. Now due to that occurring the service locker is on this is a known issue and needs to become a recall as most Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators have this same issue
Air bags never deployed when I was struck by a vehicle going 55 mph.
The front defroster only blows out of the middle vents, no flow out of the left and right vents, causing issues with visibility in any instance where the window might fog up. I have an appointment with the service department at my local Jeep dealer on 8/02/23. As this is a known issue and there is still no recall to fix the issue I feel a complaint is warranted.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while reversing approximately 5 MPH down the driveway, the contact slowed and stopped to place the vehicle into drive and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the drive (D) light was flashing. The contact stated that she placed the vehicle in park (P), and several attempts were needed to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but had occurred several times. On one occasion, the vehicle stalled while making a turn at an intersection. The contact stated that when the vehicle stalled, the vehicle was in “Electric Mode”. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer. The vehicle had not been diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V865000 (Engine) repair was performed in 2022 and related the failure to the recall. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.
driving 75 down interstate and the vehicle just lost all power yet everything was "on" like normal and no check engine light- nothing. Would not allow me to accelerate or go over 45mph. It is like it would not shift gears. I stopped twice and turned the vehicle off but it did the same thing. Took it to the dealer and on day 2 (6 days later from initial incident) of them driving it, it did same with them but would not allow them to travel over 30 mph. They state it is not showing any codes and they don't know what is wrong. This is very dangerous while on a busy highway and going 75 to all the sudden lose power to your vehicle with no control and it quickly deaccelerates to 45pmh! I almost got hit multiple times as most people were driving 80mph plus! My vehicle is only 2 years old and less than 30k miles. Something is clearly wrong but not showing any codes so noone knows!
I had the front wheels “wobble”. I had shocks replaced and a steering damper installed. The front end still bounces up and down, or wobbles, on every interstate overpass at interstate speeds.

Earlier this year vehicle would sometimes do the following, not at start up but when driving; Wipers on by themselves & driver can't shut off, turn signals inop, Both sides blind spot warning continously on alerting driver every time a vehicle on either side is passed or passes vehicle, anywhere from three to five dash warning lights illuminated. Took to dealer in April 2023 & diagnosed a bad can bus connector. Replaced connector (approx $700). Seemed to be the fix until it started again June 2023. This time all the above issues started up again including loss of power steering. I was on I70 at highway speeds in rush hour traffic and it was very dangerous. Returned to dealer yesterday 6/29/23 Immediately following loss of power steering while vehicle was displaying faults & they read codes. They are booked for 2 weeks so I'm scheduled to drop it off 7/10/2023. Dealer has been fine to work with and willing to help. My chief complaint is I have found numerous others that this is happening to (internet Wrangler JL forum) & I feel like car mfg knows about this and is not doing anything about it.
6 - 29 - 23 when engine was started several warning lamps lit up including service electric stability control . as i drove the vehicle the power steering was out and vehicle was hard to control . had vehicle towed to dealership service dept. vehicle in warranty . no repairs done to vehicle and as of 8 - 7 - 23 vehicle is still in the shop. safety of me and others at risk if vehicle continues in this condition without repair.
CLUTCH PRESSURE PLATE DISINTERGRATED CAUSING VEHICLE TO CATCH FIRE AND BURN COMPLETELY TO THE GROUND.. WHEN CLUTCH PRESSURE PLATE FAILED, ENGINE SHUT OFF, LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP IN AN UNPOPULATED AREA... NO WARNING LAMPS CAME ON UNTIL THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, MESSAGE SIMPLY SAID "CLUTCH"...
Jeep clutch started slipping. Startig smelling a burning smell. Took it to the dealership. Service tech took it down the road to see for himself. While he was driving it he noticed debris on the road in the rearview and realized it was coming from the jeep. He pulled over and the hood was red hot. The jeep then caught on fire and burnt up! Total loss. The jeep only had 28000 miles on it and still under warranty.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V767000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the power steering and braking functionality were inoperable. The contact stated that the vehicle had stalled at an intersection. The contact attempted several times to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to restart. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The mechanic informed the contact that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V767000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine) and referred the contact to a dealer. The contact called the dealer and was informed that the fuel pump was on a national backorder. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000. Dates of problem may 18 and June 9 The Jeep has engine light on the throttle control light is on I was driving on a highway and the vehicle completely went into limp mode would not go above 33 mph and almost caused an accident since the Jeep went into limp mode brought it to dealership they said the fixed it then a 2weeks later it happens again this time with my son in the car going 60 mph it does same exact thing this vehicle is a safety hazard for me and now I’m afraid to drive it at all having to pay for towing and it’s a leased vehicle just dosnt make sense to me what’s the lemon law on this
Vehicle has known steering/suspension issue knows as the Jeep "death wobble". It has now been in the shop for this twice with no fix. The first attempt took place approximately June 17, 2023. The car is now back in the service center addressing the same issue and had to be towed to the dealership. Owner does not feel safe driving the vehicle. I am attaching service report from first visit.
- The front suspension, steering and tires are available for inspection. - A safety risk occurred immediately as I crossed an uneven transition from asphalt to concrete at the beginning of a bridge. The steering wheel/front end/vehicle began to shake violently at highway speed and maintaining control became difficult. I was unable to keep the vehicle in my lane. I immediately decelerated and with a semi on my rear, was eventually able to slow enough to use one hand to engage emergency flashers. The shaking stopped at about 35 mph. I've since learned this is referred to as a 'death wobble'. - Appointment made for dealership inspection on June 6, 2023. - There were no messages, symptoms or warnings.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, the entire vehicle began to shake while driving over a bridge. The contact stated that no warning lights were illuminated prior to the failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the failure could not be duplicated. The failure continued and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a bent tie rod. The tie rod was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back a third time to the dealer and the contact was informed that the steering wheel damper needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.
The Air Conditioner in my 2021 Jeep Wrangler with 15K miles caused two anaphylactic reactions to mold. On Wednesday May 31, 2023, immediately upon starting the Jeep engine and the AC fan starting I had a severe allergic reaction while driving that resulted in me having to pull over and administer my EPI pen and use my inhaler. At the time my soft top was off as were the windows and doors. On Sunday, June 1st, the next time I got into my Jeep to drive the same thing happened. This time the doors/windows and soft top were attached. The the only constant variables to the allergic reactions were my Jeep and running the air conditioning. Today ran my Jeep engine in my driveway (it is currently 83 degrees in St. Louis) and ran the air conditioner for 30 minutes and there was NO fluid under the Jeep from condensation from the AC running. I believe the AC condensate line is clogged, and that there is mold on the AC evaporator, both causing my entire AC system and entire vehicle to be contaminated with mold causing both my anaphylactic reactions. The mold allergy is life threatening to me. The mold is also life threatening to the general public if I am driving and unable to maintain control of the vehicle due to anaphylaxis caused by the mold in the vehicle and AC system. The risk I would need to assume, if I choose to drive the Jeep again is unacceptable - and I will not take that risk. Additionally, I will not cause or assume liability for any harm caused to the public that results from an anaphylactic reaction of increasing severity to mold while driving the Jeep, which would likely temporarily incapacitate me and render me unable to control the Jeep. I will not drive my Jeep until both issues have been repaired and the Jeep has had a mold inspection and appropriate mold remediation. The Jeep dealership cannot service the Jeep for over 30 days rendering me without a car.
Known Jeep Wrangler issue "Death Wobble". When hit a bump at 60-70 MPH, Jeep shakes violently. Reducing speed and the shake stops. Steering damper replaced on 5/31/23 and 8/31/23. Occurred again and now the Power Steering Gear Box is being replaced. Disappointing for this on a known problem on a 2 year old Jeep.
When cruise control is engaged at high speeds the Jeep has a serious and dangerous wobble Also, the fuel saver auto shut off and start no longer works. The dealership is claiming both issues are out of warranty and are my responsibility to fix. Finally the recall fix left me without my jeep for 6 1/2 weeks. That is not a timely repair. They were only willing to cover 5 days of a rental.
Car shut down in the middle of the highway at around 30 mph. While using the adaptive cruise control, i stepped on the gas to accelerate. The car then shut down and many warning lights came on. The car did not respond to restarting, shifting or anything. Screen just said charge fault error.
While driving approximately 15 mph the engine cut out and the engine light came on. I was able to pull over and the engine would not start. My personal obd scanner states it is the high pressure fuel pump. I had to be towed by AAA from Moab UT to grand junction Colorado Jeep Chrysler dealership 5/25/2023
Power to my vehicle ceased abruptly. Now, my vehicle will not turn all the way on. The dashboard will illuminate but the engine will not start. This is due to Jeep's outstanding recall of a high pressure fuel pump. That recall has been listed with the NHTSA for over six months with no ETA.
I made appointment with Galena Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat, Fort Myers, FL for May 4, 2023 at 9 AM to repair the Frame Stud defect (28A/NHTSA 23V-191) on this vehicle. After having received no communication from this dealer after 5 days, I went to pick up the vehicle the evening of May 8, 2023 and discovered no attempt to remedy this defect had been made. My plans are to drive this vehicle from FL to WI for the summer months later this week. Besides making you aware of this situation, I want to have it on the record that I attempted to have the defect remedied in the event it is involved in a motor vehicle accident and would catch fire.
On multiple occasions when driving at speeds over ~50 MPH, and hitting a bump or hole in the road (highways), a terrifying wobble occurs in the steering wheel. It is shaking so violently that it also feels as though the suspension, steering, and maybe other components are compromised. I am concerned that this is an issue that could lead to severe accident / injury / fatality. I am able to regain control of the vehicle after slowing and pulling off the road. I’m fortunate enough that these incidents have thus far happened during times of low traffic where I’ve been able to pull to the shoulder and regain control. I’m very concerned that it could happen when that’s not feasible or that the vehicle could lose control altogether at highway speed. I’m also incredibly concerned that Jeep dealers in my area weren’t able to accept my vehicle for weeks and wouldn’t offer any options for loaner / rental support. It feels to me like Jeep is accepting the risk that serious injury / accident / fatality could occur vs prioritizing consumer safety.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that on four separate occasions while driving approximately 45-70 MPH, the vehicle drove over a bump in the roadway and the front end of the vehicle started to shake violently. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the failure was known as an extended vibration. The contact was then informed by the technician that the stabilizer bar would be replaced as a temporary repair however, the contact declined. The contact stated that he was concerned for his safety when driving the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number and advised to call the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.
When driving on an uneven or bumpy highway my stock Jeep wrangler experiences the infamous “death wobble”. It has done this several times when going 40 or over and hitting small bumps or uneven pavement. Slowing down to around 20 or 25 resolves the issue. This is extremely scary when it occurred on a highway going 70 mph per the speed limit and having to slow down to a slow speed (which creates another safety hazard) to resolve it.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the braking system failed to operate as designed with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) warning lights illuminated. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the dealer where two attempts were made to replace the ABS; however, the failure persisted after the repair. The manufacturer was informed about the failure and acknowledged that the failure was a known issue with the model vehicle; however, there was no fix for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 28,000.
Vehicle will stop working in electrical mode...says "electrical mode unavailable" Dealership does NOTHING, vehicle performance is unpredictable. Sometimes will not start without a jump when the battery is fully charged from a 220 outlet. I've had it towed as I was stranded... dealership said "nothing wrong" ZERO diagnostic test to see if battery has a bad cell. Yet less than 24 hours from picking up at dealership, will only operate in gas mode. NOW it seems to down shift when I take my foot off gas....makes a grinding sound. Appears I purchased a lemon.
Vehicle has fluttered off and on for 2 months. Drove on the highway yesterday and the fluttering progressively got worse. It began to lose power and a Service Electronic Throttle Control light came on. I pulled off the side of the road, turned it off and back on. I went 45 mph with hazard lights to the nearest exit. It continued to flutter and the light reappeared. I’ve called many jeep dealerships before this as well as now and they all say there is nothing they can do due to no solution/remedy. I don’t feel safe driving my Jeep back home 3.5 hrs so I have to borrow a family member’s vehicle while my Jeep sits at a dealership until there is something they can do.
While going 55 mph, I hit a bump in the road and the Jeep started shaking all over the road. It started doing the death wobble.
