NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Kia EV6. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Heard a loud pop noise as I was driving. Check Electrical System warning immediately flashed on the dash and vehicle slowed down while I was driving. Moments later, vehicle entered "turtle mode" allowing for restricted speeds. Vehicle then flashed error message about 12V battery having low charge. Vehicle continued to reduce maximum speed until it came to a stop minutes later. No previous symptoms and all TSBs and recalls had been performed on the vehicle. Tow truck was necessary to get the vehicle to a dealer. Vehicle currently with the dealer awaiting assessment and diagnostics.
After driving the car for a while, when the car is parked and the car is still ON, the car began displaying - Check Lane Assist warning. From that point, the Smart cruise is not working. The warning displayed for more than 20 days. It happened to me more than 5 times. I reached out to Kia and their engineer is unable to resolve it. The warnings get erased after 20+ days. In the recent visit, Kia engineer asked me to change all 4 tires, which I did along with the Wheel balancing and alignment, still I got the same issue last week.
Premature failure (23 months) of the 12 volt battery Dealer unwilling to replace battery under 3-year warranty Vehicle taken to dealership - supposedly submitted to tech support under case# 16248382 (see attached)
While driving at night under raining conditions with the auto highbeam enable the Kia’s HUD will get so bright at times that will white out the drivers view making nearly impossible to see. Kia’s is refusing the fix the issue because they can’t replicated even with a video I provided and I even found another persons video on YouTube, as well as several owners on a forum complaining about it.
While driving my car on [XXX] around [XXX] an error message popped up "Stop vehicle and check power supply" and speed of the car started to decline. I could not drive more than 20mph on a main street that had a speed limit of 35 mph. Thankfully I was able to park at a Ralphs in a safe place before the car died. The 12 Volt battery died. If this happened in a freeway this could be a risk if we are not able to stop at a safe location. Towing services was able to tow my car home but I had to keep a portable jumper connected to the car so I can move the car on the flatbed since I couldn't put the car in Neutral for towing. I replaced the 12 Volt battery the next day, but the issue persists and the next available appointment is on April 1st. Upon researching this issue, it is a well known issue with Hyundai/Kia cars and it looks like the ICCU module needs to be replaced. Please look into this issue. Here are some links for reference: [XXX] [XXX] Thank You. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
While driving, EV vehicle suddenly lost most of its power. Normal driving on 45 mph street until came to stop light. Would not accelerate over 28 mph upon light changing to green. 12v battery warning light came on.
While driving my car on March 7th, 2024 around 2:30pm an error message popped up "Stop vehicle and check power supply" and speed of the car was noticeably limited. Thankfully I was able to pull to side of the road and called road side assistance as car was undrivable, the 12 volt battery was completely dead. When tow truck arrived, a jump park was required to put car into neutral in order to get onto tow truck. If this happened in a freeway this could be a risk if we are not able to stop at a safe location. Towing services was able to tow my car to the dealership about 15 minutes away, upon unloading vehicle onto lot, taking an Uber home as no loaners are available, asked the next day about getting car into diagnosis and was told that it would take 2 weeks to get in to be looked at, and now it sits until they are able to diagnose a known problem, even the sales manager at this dealership has had same issue on 3 different EV6's. He assured me they know what to look for when it comes to the issue. After doing some research this issue, it is a well known issue with Hyundai/Kia cars and it looks like the ICCU module needs to be replaced. And Hyundai/Kia EVs and was supposedly addressed in a recall done in late September of last year, yet I have gone back and made a complaint with Kia regarding this issue, but in their eyes it was fixed in the recall. This new issue now goes under same case number associated with the charging interrupted error, where charging stops after 10 mins, took to dealership had the update done and still same issue. Continued to have problems charging on level 2 charger, even at a lowered amps. Lowering the amount that is recommended by the manufacturer and still having the same issue. Thank You.
While driving at normal road speeds, the vehicle suddenly lost all electronics (infotainment, air conditioning, dash). After 2-3 minutes these systems came back online but the car continued to have a warning light for the Lane Keeping system not functioning. This warning now comes on periodically after this incident
The car suddenly lost power and stalled to a max speed of 22mph. The car showed a check electrical system please stop vehicle. This is a known issue with the NHTSA. The car was towed to the nearest Kia dealer - Airport Kia in Naples FL.
Charging stops after 10 mins, took to dealership had the update done. Still continue to have problems charing on level 2 charger. Lowered the amps on charger. Lowered the amount fully in recommended by the manufacturer still have the same issue.
Stop vehicle and check power supply light comes on. Car shows error message before battery dies while driving. And wont charge. If on the highway you have a few minutes before your battery completely dies although my battery is 100%
When driving at 35 mph on level ground, a loud "pop" was heard and the vehicle immediately lost power and warning messages having to do with the 12V system appeared on the instrument panel warning that the car needed to be pulled over in a safe spot and turned off. The vehicle was transported to a local KIA dealer via flatbed and has now been at the dealer for more than 30 day. So far, the 12V battery, the ICCU, the inverter and ICCU fuse have been replaced.
12v battery died suddenly, prematurely, and unexpectedly while driving at highway speeds. All vehicle safety functions failed and car immediately lost all power. Was able to pull over safely at which point vehicle shut it self off and would not start again
12 Battery drains out so fast and so often . Even if it is charged overnight externally . it drains out so fast that after driving some distance and after switching off , it does not come back up and we cannot start the car and have to use a jumper to start the car . My car is car dealer for 2 weeks and they are unable to find fix , though they have opened a ticket with Kia Tech and they have 7 such cars as of today facing the same issue.
Was driving to go pick up one of my kids later at night. Was roughly 1/2 mile from home driving about 40 mph when I heard a pop / noise on the rear passenger side. Was unsure if I had rolled over something or what. Shortly after that (few seconds later), the "Check Electrical System" came on. Since I was close to home, I elected to turn around to go home since I could conduct a fairly easy turn around near the sub-division. Before I did that, the car then noted "Limited Power" and came up with the Turtle icon. The speed was restricted to 25 mph. This continued for roughly several hundred feet. At that point, a second warning noting a critical issue came up and the speed was further restricted to 12 mph. I was able to go through the 4-way stop sign, continued to drive under the restricted speed. I was able to turn on my hazards and wave several people past me as I drove extremely slowly home (12 mph on a 35 mph road). I did arrive to my house and pulled up into the driveway where I was able to park the car. The vehicle was at roughly 65% charge when I had started the trip. As per the recommendation of the dealership, I had the vehicle towed using Kia's Roadside Assistance to the dealership the next day. The vehicle was unable to start or even turn on. The tow truck was able to use a battery pack on the 12V battery to be able to activate the car to shift it to neutral for towing.
The vehicle completely lost power while driving. My wife came down a dirt road hill, made a left onto [XXX] in Duxbury, VT, heard a "clunk" from below the car, and experienced total power loss. An error flashed on the screen that read "Critical Battery System" and then, soon after, "Stop Car Immediately." She was able to coast 1/4 mile (downhill) to a school parking lot. The car was towed to a dealership where the dealer replaced the inverter (ICCU) and the paperwork stated "DC/DC Converter input voltage sensor fault." The car had 25,896 miles on it when the incident occurred. The total power loss was extremely dangerous, and we were lucky it did not occur on a highway at a higher speed with more cars in proximity. I see online that NHSTA had previous reports of this issue both with the EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2022 Kia EV6. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V200000 (Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that a battery message was displayed. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, but the diagnostic result was unavailable. The vehicle was repaired on three separate occasions: however, the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that approximately 15 hours were needed to fully charge the battery. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Issue with the car, not charging it was the ICcU module
While driving along the courtney Campbell causeway there was a loud explosion shaking the car out of control. I was able to pull off the road and inspect the roof, where the exploding sound occurred. I found the glass panoramic sunroof had fractured and was gone from the vehicle. There was only the perimeter of the glass roof remaining. I have filed an incident report with the city of Clearwater and my passenger and I were both seen at Mease Countryside ER. The vehicle is still in my possession.
My 2022 EV6 has been experiencing issues with the 12v battery that has resulted in multiple jump starts. Battery was tested by dealer but no issues found. On December 5, the car suddenly lost power and had to be towed to the dealer. Immediately prior to this the "Check Vehicle Electric System" light came on. The warning light came on and the car experienced an immediate loss of power and the died completely. It has been one week and they have yet to diagnose the issue.
This has happened multiple times: driving along, no cars in front of me or along the side. FCW suddenly appears along with emergency braking kicking in. I can be doing 35 mph or 60 mph, doesn't matter what speed. Scares the heck out of me, and creates a safety issue as vehicles behind run the risk of rear-ending me. The only way to clear the FCW is to come to a complete stop and shift between P and go. For some reason, it also sets off one of my blind spot warnings, lighting up in the sideview mirror on either driver or passenger side. I've mentioned this to dealer, they say there are no codes in the computer, and they don't seem to have a way to diagnose what the problem is (software? bad sensor or camera? ...) other than keeping the car for days and trying to recreate the problem. NOTE: date below is last time it happened...its happened at least 15 times in the past 6 months.
The driver's side USB-A wiring harness repeatedly (though intermittently) drops connection between a properly connected iPhone and the native infotainment system, causing a "drop-out" of Apple CarPlay connectivity. The safety concerns associated with this are most acute when using Apple CarPlay-based navigation systems, as the native infotainment system stops displaying Apple Car-Play navigation, and begins searching for a USB-A connection with display "Reading USB." This sometimes remedies itself, with return to Apple CarPlay display but often requires physical reconnection of the USB-A cable. This level of manual manipulation of the infotainment system has caused me to lose navigation capabilities mid-trip and frequently takes my attention away from safely navigating the vehicle, especially when in urban traffic. The problem is persistent across multiple phones, multiple cables (including brand new Apple-branded cables), and other USB-A hardware external to the vehicle's infotainment system. The problem is well documented in multiple online owners' forums (see links below), and appears to be experienced in the similarly engineered/equipped Hyundai Ioniq 5. In my experience, Kia dealers have difficulty recreating the issue, as it is intermittent. Even when they are able to recreate the issue, they are unwilling to perform service, as neither Kia nor Hyundai have developed related technical service bulletins documenting or addressing this issue despite its persistence over multiple years since the cars' release. This presents an ongoing and unaddressed safety risk to Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 drivers. Driving South on Route 15 in Gettysburg Area on 11-22-2023 I got a warning message on my dash which read “check electric vehicle system”. The warning disappeared off the dash and we continued to drive a bit further. The warning light illuminated once again and I started to look for a pull off area. Not long after the warning appeared the second time a bigger warning came on the dash and directed me to pull over and stop. We fortunately were able to get into the right lane and pull off the road. We were headed to Northern VA and would have been on a number of multi-lane roads where if a dead vehicle is stranded in high traffic area with speeds exceeding 60 to 80 miles per hour could have resulted in a catastrophe with a car that just goes dead. Remember there is no warning except for the dash warning and a few seconds until the car died. This problem is well know and documented all over the Internet and KIA has done nothing about it. 11-22-2023 At 10:33 AM we called the KIA hot line and explained what had happened to the KIA representative. He secured a tow truck. At dealer on 12-27-22 for charging problem. At dealer on 8-10-23 to have ICCU check 11-22-2023 At 12:38 PM we received a call from the tow truck driver and ask where we were located. We got to the dealer but they couldn’t get the car off of the roll back tow truck because it had lost all power to the car and wouldn't unlock doors, release the parking brake etc. I suggested to the service advisor that the battery needed a jump or battery pack to energize the car enough to get it off the truck. That did work and pulled the car to the rear parking area. I told the service advisor about all of the complaints on the Internet about EV6’s stopping dead in the middle of the road causing some very dangerous conditions. He said the dealership had not heard anything about it. I have no loaner car and car has been sitting for 20 days waiting on parts that were probably not upgraded from the original part.
While driving in a major thoroughfare, a red warning came on to check the electrical system, and that propulsion power may be limited. We pulled over to a parking area and consulted the manual. It suggested turning the engine off and back on again - we did so, but the warning remained. We determined that we were 2-4mi from our Kia dealer. Based on the manual information, we believed we would be able to drive at a slow speed and selected a route towards the dealer that avoided the highway. However then the 'turtle' warning light came on and we we were reduced to walking pace. We pulled into a side road, but were unable to pull over completely before we lost all motion. We activated the warning lights, but after a minute or so there was not even sufficient power for those. This was a rainy day with not great visibility. We feel lucky and this could have been so much more dangerous. We had to redirect cars around us while we waited for towing. The vehicle was at the dealer for a voluntary service campaign the previous month related to the ICCU. The online version of the EV6 2022 manual has different instructions - it says to refrain from driving and have the vehicle towed. We would have followed those instructions.
Getting check vehicle electrical system warning. Dealer does not read any error Getting multiple charging error faults, dealer does not read an error
car stopped and will not start. 2nd occurrence. 09-25-23 and 10-17-23
There is a component, the ICCU, that is failing in a number of early cars. Who knows about the later ones? The 12v battery drains and the car won’t start. If the use is lucky, a jump start will get it to run enough to get to the dealer. Otherwise, a tow is in order. This can happen while the car is under way as well. Look at the Reddit ev6 forum and the Facebook EV6/EV9 forum. There are many stories about this problem.
I was driving home when I heard a loud pop in the back of the car then warning symbols pop saying the there is a issue with electrical system. Then it told me to pull of the road due to low power. I've been reading around heard about the iccu not charging the 12v battery while driving and lost all function when it dies.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia EV6. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 MPH, the message "Speed Limit System Failure" was displayed, and the instrument cluster screen start to flash on and off before going blank. The vehicle started to lose motive power and then stalled. The vehicle was restarted but after driving approximately one mile the failure reoccurred and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the local service center the vehicle was diagnosed and determined that the 12-Volt battery was faulty and needed to be replaced. The 12-Volt battery was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,000.
Several months ago, a bit of road debris hit the front grill and broke a piece off. Soon after that I began receiving messages of 'check vehicle electrical system', 'active air flap warning', and another that at this point I do not recall. The overall repair cost nearly $6,000. An employee at Emich Kia reported that there were two other 2022 Kia EV6 cars that came in for the same repair. The employees exact words, "This is a design flaw that they have fixed for the newer models." I am reporting this because I also believe that it is a design flaw. Why put so much plastic on the lower front grill that can be easily broken?
Car 12v battery keep on dying after car is only one years old. Kia can not figure out why. I have to carry an emergency battery jumper with me at all times. This is an electric vehicle and when 12v battery dies. Vehicle loose all power.
sometimes vehicle is not charging at 6.6Kw charging. it says unable to connect/not charging. I tried multiple times and multiple locations. Also, I informed the dealer (Kia Fremont) and they are keeping my vehicle from last 2 weeks and there is no communication about the status. [XXX] vin no. Just like the Hyundai Ionic 5 issue with power loss, my Kia EV6 which has the exact same underlying system (e-gmp); I heard a loud pop followed by my vehicle immediately informing me to stop driving and pull over. It has since been in hobble or "turtle" mode and will not let me drive it for more than 1 minute before insisting I pull over. It has since been towed to the local Kia dealership.
On SEPT.8, 2023 The car was charging and then it stopped charging. There was no warning or indications. All power failed and the EV is now inoperable.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia EV6. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle failed to start as needed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the local dealer was contacted for assistance and a technician arrived at the location and recharged the battery; however, the failure persisted. The contact related the failure with the NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V200000 (Electrical System); however, the parts were not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,050. Parts distribution disconnect.
2022 EV6 Wind. For the first 10 months i had absolutely no issues charging the car at home. The car went in to the dealer in mid august for a number of service bulletins. Since those changes, the car no longer accepts level 2 charging at the 48amp speed that it is advertised at and documented to provide. The dealership is not capable of replicating it, because they only have a 32 amp charger, which is significantly less powerful. It is my understanding that this is a heat issue which makes me nervous about a fire. I can turn the charger down very low, but that defeats the purpose of why I bought this car as faster speed charging was one of its selling points.
An error message started flashing on the dashboard. The car came to a crawl was able to turn off to a side road where the car shut down. Had to call roadside assistant and have the car towed to the nearest Kia dealership Two days later was told the iccu had burned out and there was no ETA on a part to fix the problem.
Inlet charging port overheats causing charging to be interrupted when using 40A or higher EVSE. This is dangerous because the charging port or the wiring harness behind it is overheating because of high electrical power which can cause a fire. Kia has acknowledged this problem by issuing a TSB which reduces the charging rate when the overheating is detected but this does not solve the actual problem with the port or wiring harness.
I continually have issues with the car not charging. I have taken it to the dealership and they "update the software" but I continue to have issues where my car only charges 10-15% at a time and continues to give me an alert "charge interrupted" but it does not tell me WHY the charge has been interrupted. I will set it to charge overnight but then wake up ready to go to work and my car only has 20% charge and I can't make my commute. I've had the same problem at public chargers. However, my partner has an electric Ford Mustang and his car has had no problems charging at home. I would say for the first 9 months of ownership this was not a problem with my EV6 it only began in the last 3-4 months but it happens almost every time I plug in.
The vehicle is repeatedly shutting down its charging cycle during charging sessions. I am always getting “charging session interrupted” notifications.
The issue is essentially EXACTLY like this article: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a44272155/2022-hyundai-ioniq-5-nhtsa-investigation/ We heard a semi-loud pop that appeared to come from the rear of the vehicle. Approximately 5-15 seconds later, we got a notice that the electric system needed to be diagnosed. We were only a block from the house, traveling at low speeds, and did not experience a complete loss of power. However, the system started giving additional alerts (I do not remember the exact phrasing) related to stopping the vehicle immediately.
Just got a safety notice from KIA for my EV6 saying the the car would stop with little warning, so with safety I can not drive a car the will stop on a freeway, so I would like a rebate or another car
During Level 2, 48 amp charging the car continually stops and starts charging roughly every five minutes. After contacting the charging maker, their diagnostic showed nothing wrong with the charger or incoming power, and that the car was stopping the charge. My Kia dealer states it is a problem with the onboard charger. However, Kia support doesn’t seem to acknowledge it. I have seen multiple reports of this is happening including a potential lawsuit, so I’m reporting this as an issue as well.
After five months of flawless at home charging, sessions failed and charging sessions were shut down by car. Took EV6 in to local Kia dealer service which couldn’t find any issues with car or charging systems. Dealer recommended electrician investigate our home set up which all checked out fine. To rule out all possibilities, we decided to replace our at home charger and purchased third party system from dealer. This worked for about a month and charging failed again during a session this morning. Called Kia who said no recalls or campaigns on car.
The contact owns a 2022 Kia EV6. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle shut off and lost motive power. The vehicle rebooted and the message "Critical Electrical Failure" and "Stop Vehicle” was displayed. The low voltage message was also displayed. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle or restart the vehicle. The vehicle came to a complete stop independently. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for a diagnostic test however, no failure was found. The contact was informed that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed by a technician. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 11,000.
Collision a avoidance warning randomly goes off while stopped a good distance behind cars at traffic light.
HAD JUST CHARGED THE VEHICLE AT A LEVEL 3 CHARGER, RECEIVED BATTERY FAILURE WARNINGS ON THE DASHBOARD, BY THE NEXT MORNING THE CAR HAD LOST MOTIVE POWER DOWN TO 12 MPH MAXIMUM. THIS OCCURRED JUNE 19, 2023. THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER EVER SINCE, WHERE THEY ADVISE THAT THERE ARE NO ICCU REPLACEMENT MODULES IN THE USA AS THEY ARE BACK ORDERED. THE DEALER IS NORTHSTAR KIA IN QUEENS, NY.
Issue has been diagnosed by Kia and our dealership as a failed Integrated Control Charging Unit (ICCU). Parts are backordered indefinitely (we were told there's 106 on order nationally). Same issue as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (which is built on the same platform): https://news.yahoo.com/highway-safety-agency-reports-power-162735107.html Car dash showed a "Check electric vehicle system" alert, followed shortly after by "Stop vehicle and check power supply" on a short city drive home. Was close enough to make it home without the car turning off, where I confirmed the car could also no longer be charged at home using AC charging. The ICCU manages AC to DC power conversion for home charging and also keeps the 12-volt battery charged. Per Kia's recommendation, had the car towed to the nearest dealership. The worst part is just the wait time for backordered parts that Kia and Hyundai; dealership can't even give us an estimate of when to expect the parts. 107 does not seem like a difficult number of components to come up with on short notice for a carmaker that sells 2.3 million cars annually.
My system keep failing to charge keeps saying charging failure. Temp is 65 out side no sun and it's night time. I'm using charge point because kia said that was the best for home charging. It has become more and more each time
On June 3, 2023 I found out that my EV6 was no longer charging, and that I could not open my doors or my trunk with my key fob. Nor could I start the engine. It turned out that my 12v battery was drained. As I never left my headlights or doors open overnight, I had no clue why the 12v battery was suddenly inoperable. I called AAA roadside assistance to have my 12v battery jumped. On June 4, 2023 my 12v battery had drained again, and I had to call AAA roadside assistance once more to have my 12v battery jumped. The earliest I could take my car in to the dealership for warranty-covered repairs was June 14. There, I was advised of the issues regarding the integrated charge control unit (ICCU). The dealership could not tell me when the part would arrive so they could replace it. I am currently using a rental car provided by the KIA dealership. Until the ICCU is replaced, I fear my EV6 could stop in traffic and leave me vulnerable to danger.
