NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2024 Kia EV9. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The vehicle digital instrument cluster turned off and wouldn’t show speed or any other information. The central infotainment screen and the climate control screen worked while driving. The turn signals were not working while this was happening either. Tried to stop the car and start back again within a minute, but the screen never came on. Have pictures taken to prove it. Once we were at our temporary destination, car turned off and when we came back after an hour and restarted the car, the digital instrument cluster came back on and started behaving normally. Can’t reproduce the problem on demand, but happened a few times already.
The main instrument panel in front of the steering wheel turns off completely. Speed cannot be monitored and turn signals cannot be heard. This has happened two times on back-to-back days. Each time after turning off the car for 30 minutes the issue went away but is very concerning.
When the car is turned on the speedometer display is blank. Further, the indicators of the car does not function as well. HVAC and info entertainment display worked as expected.
Vehicle suspension experiences rear end swaying at speed when encountering rough or uneven road surfaces. Vehicle is available upon request. Rear 2 rows experience it more than front but requires driver to be mindful of steering to maintain control of vehicle. Dealer replicated swaying on vehicle and new 1 off the lot on 11/11/2024 per service invoice. Dealer service department test drove, rebalanced all tires, performed alignment, 8k service, and has performed 4 multi-point inspections since purchase in July 2025. No warning indicators, codes, or lights on dash and as stated on service invoice.
Our vehicle is a brand-new Kia EV9, and since ownership, we’ve experienced two serious incidents where the instrument cluster/dashboard display has gone completely blank. This occurred once while driving and once immediately after starting the car. The failure is critical because it not only prevents the display of essential information such as speed, but it also disables turn signals, creating an extremely dangerous situation. During the incident that happened while driving, I was unable to signal my intentions to other drivers, significantly increasing the risk of an accident. At present, the only known workaround is to pull over and turn off the vehicle for at least 30 minutes, after which the display typically returns. This issue poses a severe safety concern, and we are eager to have it inspected and properly addressed.
I went out from my house and got in my vehicle, turned it on, and the instrument cluster screen was not working. I turned off the car and turned it back on and the screen was still not working; I did not have any way to display my speed on the dash. I turned the car off again for a few minutes and then back on and the instrument cluster screen still did not turn on. I had to go pick up my child from school and so I had to use a 3rd party GPS app to monitor speed and the screen never came back on. The next day I checked and the main gauge cluster screen was working again.
Main display is black. Unable to see speedometer, battery status, turning signals, etc. Car is 72% charged but display will not turn on. It appears to be happening to several EV9 in these past weeks. Possible software update issues.
Heads up display and speedometer screen turned off while driving. The car would drive but we could not use signals, know how much charge was left, know how fast we were driving, or any of the information needed to drive the car safely. Eventually returned to normal after leaving the car turned off for hours. This has happened twice.
For the second time in a month when we went to drive the speedometer display did not appear.
The screen directly in front of the driver stops displaying all information except the gear selection part of the screen and Auto Hold displays. No speedometer or anything. This has happened to us twice now since purchasing the vehicle in March. The dealership can't reproduce it so they can't diagnosis the problem to solve it. I've sent them 2 videos of this happening on different days. After shutting the car off for an hour and turning it back on it seems to correct itself.
Infotainment went out, to include speedometer while driving did not come back on till the following day.
Rear passenger door opens while driving down the road. Has happened over 6 times. Local dealership has not been able to reproduce issue. No one has been in seat when it happens but I do have young kids who sit in this seat (without car seats) and I’m not sure what would happen. I want to report should this be more if a widespread issue.
The vehicle unexpectedly accelerates in multiple situations, all related to “iDrive” (one pedal driving), either failing to engage, or unexpectedly disengaging. It almost hit something while parking, and it started accelerating into oncoming traffic from a stop sign. I’ve driven the car for 60 miles. I suspect there are other similar scenarios that I haven’t discovered. Steps to reproduce grouped by scenario: 1. Engage iDrive with the left steering wheel paddle. Remove foot from brake. Car does not move. Switch to R then D. Remove foot from brake. Car accelerates. 2. Engage iDrive. Turn off car. Turn it back on. Shift to D. Car accelerates. 3. Press paddle to engage iDrive, and bring vehicle to a stop. Remove foot from pedal. Sometimes it stays stopped. Sometimes it beeps instead of engaging iDrive, then accelerates later. Expected behavior: After engaging one pedal driving with the left steering wheel paddle, the vehicle should never accelerate from a stop unless the gas pedal has been pressed. The driver should have to press the right steering wheel paddle to disengage it. The left paddle should reliably engage one pedal mode.
I copied this from this website. I'm having the exact same issues. I took it to Oakes Kia where I bought the car and they investigated it and said they had no idea what was going on. [XXX] The digital instrument panel (where the gauges are displayed) goes almost entirely blank. It’ll restart after the car sits while off, but we’ve had to drive without the instrument panel telling us how fast we’re going and whether the turn signals are on or off. The screen appears to be losing some communication with the rest of the car, too, because when the digital gauge screen is blank, the camera view that’s activated when you’re in Reverse doesn’t automatically shut off when you’re in Drive and moving forward. The odometer, however, appears to still be accumulating mileage when the screen is off. Changing drive modes, however, did not work. The driver's seat shifts towards the right rear when the vehicle accelerates or goes around a left hand turn (i.e. when forces push the driver towards the rear of the vehicle). The driver's seat shifts towards the left front when the vehicle brakes heavily or goes over speed bumps. Kia dealership says this is a known issue with the seat coming out of its track assembly, and confirmed by half a dozen reports on Reddit's Kia EV9 forum [XXX] ). Kia is offering no timeline for a fix. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Main instrument panel in front of the steering wheel went blank; could not see the speed, charge status, or anything other than the gear. Turn signal indicator did not flash or make noise. The entertainment screen was not impacted.
The drivers side seat has a broken part in the right back. The part makes noise when turns make the body shift right. Also, it feels like the seat back is partially disconnected, and some times during drives, it feels like it shifts back into the correct position.
The front screen (in front of the steering wheel) turned off while driving. No idea of my speed or if turn signals were working. Screen stayed off until I parked. When I came back over an hour later it worked. This was very scary.
Drive instrument screen goes blank. Can’t see signals. All safety features disable. Can’t see signals for turning. Can’t see charge or mileage
The whole car vibrates at highway speeds. You can feel it in the steering wheel and the center armrest console. Dealer has balanced wheels twice and performed alignment but nothing will fix it.
When I entered and tried the vehicle, I was presented with a trip information display on the instrument cluster in another language(assume Korean) with all values at zero. After turning the car on, the instrument cluster was blank except for the gear indicator and a red parking brake icon. The heads up display was completely blank as well. The car would shift into all other gears and drive. Turn signals did work, but the indicators were absent and did not make any sound. There was also no ready indication or chime signaling that the car was on and ready to drive. The surround view camera system also did not turn off automatically after driving away. Usually the system turns off after 7mph, but there was no speed indication on the blank instrument cluster. I was definitely going much faster. There were no warnings indicating anything wrong with the vehicle. After being parked and off for about 30 minutes, I returned to check the car and everything worked as normal. Attached to the report is a picture of the first image on the instrument cluster before going almost completely blank, when the problem first occurred.
the main screen display showing speed, milage, camera etc randomly goes black and its not working. This affects working of turn signals, cameras on the side of the vehicle that aid in changing lanes and its overall a safety issue.
When driving at speeds 60+ mph, EV9 steering wheel and center console vibrate consistently even on newly paved smooth road(s). I have taken it into two different dealerships for resolve twice within the first week of ownership. Both dealerships checked tires, mount and balanced the ones that were off and sent us on our way. The steering wheel and console vibrations persist. I have taken it back in and reported that the issue hasn’t been resolved. They noted it on the service order but did nothing further in an effort to resolve the issue. This is a well known and documented safety issue on NHTSA complaints and several Facebook owner groups for the EV9 across the world.
Another car parked around 12 inches from the driver's door of my Kia EV9. I was unable to electronically unlock any of the doors nor the rear hatch to let me get inside my car. I tried the key fob, the Kia app on my Android phone, and touching the both front door handles. The side mirrors extended and the lights flashed and the horn beeped each time I attempted to unlock my vehicle, but the side handls wouldn't extend out. I tried opening the rear hatch via the key fob but it didn't open; also I tried opening the rear hatch by pressing the switch near the license plate, again, it didn't open. I was standing in a parking lot for 30 minutes before the driver of the other drove away.
Drivers seat moving diagonally back and forth left to right when your make left and right turns. The force the car makes, forces the drivers seat to shift. Its a huge safety concern, everyone that has an EV9, a crash can result in the driver being killed because if the seat moves left to right forward and back under heavy or even light g force, imagine during a crash. The seatbelt is on the seat, so your whole body would go flying into the windshield because the seat can't even stay in position with light or heavy movements. Several people have reported identical experiences that only indicate the problem is not just happening to one or a few cars. Kia of America refused to replace my seat and refused at the local kia service center in Daytona beach, FL acknowledge or be shown the replication of the safety hazard. Several others on Facebook and forums are trying to take to service centers, but with it being a complex matter of not just the seat bolts needing to be tightened and something above the seat frame causing the issue, "master technicians" have no idea what they are looking at.
Brand New EV9 Land AWD has wheel shake and vibration at 65MPH+. Center console vibrates and shakes substantially. Performed multiple wheel balances without and real change. Multiple other people reporting same issues. Not sure if this is tire, wheel, or driveshaft related. Kia America seems to not be interested in investigating this. This car drives rougher than a heavy class diesel truck.
The third row seatbelt is malfunctioning doesn’t work at all. I have 4 kids and that seat can’t be used at all so I don’t risk my kid safety. Contacted Kia and they were pushing at least 4 weeks
In brand new 2024 Kia EV9, the steering wheel shakes at or above speeds of 65mph. Replicated symptoms in all regen modes, as well as with regenerative braking turned off. Replicated symptoms with lane assist and highway driving assist both on and off. Issue presents itself on various different conditions of road surfaces. Brought vehicle to dealership service department and they stated that alignment was perfect and there was no unusual tire wear. Service advisor went on test drive with me and witnessed the symptoms but disregarded it as possible uneven road surfaces and said they wouldn't know how to go about fixing it. The service invoice states "nothing is wrong with this vehicle" which is completely untrue. Tire balance was not checked. Confirmed with other owners of both the EV9 and EV6 that this is an ongoing issue with no known fix action or open TSB from Kia. Issues are not present below 60mph.
Vehicle experiences steering vibration when at highway speeds (above 65mph). I have brought the vehicle in for service four times and the issue still returned after multiple alignments, rotations, and road force balances. The local service techs are working with Kia, but it has currently been in the shop for 24 days with no resolution. According to the service advisor, tires have been inspected and even swapped with new ones but the problem is still present. I am concerned with the safety of the vehicle because it creates issues with control at high speeds which could result in an accident. Even at low speeds, the rear end fishtails over small bumps creating a temporary loss of control. I am unsure if the two are related. I can provide Kia service order numbers and Kia customer care case number upon request. Multiple other owners have experienced the same concerns and have posted a growing number of instances where the vehicle was purchased back by Kia as a result.
when driving this car at highway speeds, if you hit any sort of obstacle, you are going to experience an extreme amount of sloshing in the back of your car. This same experience occurs when you are going down a hill, around a bend, and hit a pothole or any sort of irregularities in the road surface. When this sloshing occurs, it feels as though the back end of the car is going to whip around, causing you go to into an uncontrolled spin. To put this into perspective, I had to replace my rear tires after 10,000 miles because of how much wear this sloshing introduced to the tires - my front tiers were still at 7/32nds for reference. And we don't drive this think like a bat out of hell... At 10k miles, the alignment was also way out of whack (which the dealer admitted shouldn't have happened with so few miles on it), because of the extreme movements of the car from side to side. This phenomenon is well documented among the KIA owners forums and my dealer refuses to believe it's an issue.
We've had the vehicle for about six months as my wife's primary car. within the first week of driving the vehicle, she noticed it "hops around" when encountering irregularities in the road surface at highway speeds. After driving it myself, I agree—the vehicle gets unsettled while driving over seams, bumps, or uneven surfaces, even minor ones like raised seams or potholes. This happens and is most noticebale at highway speeds, both while driving straight and through corners, with the rear end feeling like it's skipping, hopping, or "porpoising." Even with small irregulairities in the road the vehicle lightly sways. Tire pressure is set to manufacturer specifications, and there's no noticeable irregular or excessive wear on the tires. When I have spoken to the dealership about this, they cliam that it's perfectly normal becuase it's a heavy vehicle (referencing a 3/4 ton pickup). This does not inspire confidence in dirving the vehicle and is likely to cause an accident.
First the vehicle shakes at highway speeds. It has a substantial steering wheel vibration. I had to get two separate wheel balances done to attempt to resolve the issue. Can’t really say if the issue is fully resolved now because both the 12v battery and high voltage battery have had issues or failures leading to a completely dead unusable vehicle. Car has been out of working order for 13 days now with no eta on when the issue will be resolved. All of this happened with less than 30 days of owning the vehicle.
The automatic high-beam system in my 2024 EV9 is not sensitive enough to dim the headlights for traffic. Quite frequently it will just leave the brights on even though there is obviously traffic in the way. It does this for oncoming traffic, traffic moving in the same direction ahead of me, and crossing traffic. It does dim the lights only under some circumstances and is very inconsistent. This puts other drivers at risk because the LED headlights are extremely bright in the high beam setting and will blind other drivers. I have had numerous other cars with auto high beam systems that are much more sensitive and work properly. It appears as if the system doesn't have any issues, as there are no warning lights and it behaves like this all of the time.
On the Land and GT Line Trims for the EV9 there is an acrylic/plastic front grill that has pixelated lights on it. Whatever Kia is using it is a substandard part and does not hold up to normal driving and get's cracks in it very easily. To my knowledge there is safety equipment behind this piece and Kia refuses to acknowledge there is an issue with this acrylic grill piece that causes it to crack so easily. There are comments from many owners around the internet having the same issue. I'm hoping that the NHTSA can assist owners in getting this item fixed and forcing Kia to create a part that will hold up over time to normal driving conditions and protects the safety equipment housed behind it.
During left turns the driver's seat will shift right abruptly causing the driver to feel unsafe. This happens repeatedly and consistently while driving, but only while turning left. I've taken this issue to the dealer who replicated it, but did nothing.
When operating the vehicle the driver seat will move diagonally from the right rear to the right front and back. This is sometimes accompanied by an audible clicking noise, other times not. We have been informed by our Kia dealer (Kia Englewood in Englewood, NJ) that the noise and movement are cause by a plate in the seat assembly being to thin causing it to flex and move. Dealer stated that other vehicles in the same model line (EV9) are demonstrating the same failure and that the dealer expects a recall to be issued.
The vehicle has a 12v battery that runs accessory systems that is charged by the main battery. The vehicle has an issue where the main battery does not charge the 12v. Nothing on the vehicle will function and you can not enter the vehicle. You can also not charge the vehicle. This is a known issue and numerous owners are having this issue.
I leased my EV9, GT from Northstar KIA, NY. I got the delivery of EV9 GT on 3/29/2024. I started to notice that the car was not charging properly. After the whole night of charging it was charged like 3-4% at most. on the 3rd-4th day, the car started to make sudden abnormal sounds. I called the salesperson and dealership regarding the charging, and other issues, and told me to take it to the service center. I took the car to the service center on 4/7/2024, and I was told that the mechanic for EV9 was not available that day. Later that day I was driving to the shopping mall, and the car started to behave weirdly, after driving about 8-10 miles, right before the mall entrance, the car became very slow, it was not responding to acceleration. I was slowly able to pull the car to the parking. About 2-3 hours later when I started the car again, it started normally, all the signs were good, and as soon as I turned my car on the main street, about 3-4 minutes after starting the car, it suddenly stopped. Thank God, there were no cars right behind me. The power was on, but the car was not moving. I had to tow the car to my home since the service center was closed. The next day I called Kia roadside assistance and it is at a service center on 04/08/2024. I am an extremely busy physician and have small children in my household. I am deeply concerned about the safety aspects of this vehicle as it tends to shut off in the roadway while driving. This is extremely dangerous for me and my family. To my surprise, My dealer, Northstar KIA has no loaner vehicle. After my repeated requests, my salesperson told me to go to the service center and ask for a rental car. and also told me they would reimburse the rental fees. When I called the service center, they said they do not have any rental or loaner car. While I leased and paid for the car, I am without my car or a loaner car.
There was 1/4" of slush on the roof of the EV9 when starting an in-town trip. On a back road when decelerating, most of the slush slid forward and down the windshield. It was very wet but frozen enough to create a lump under the wipers. It seems the EV9's wipers will completely stop if they are unable to fully return to their start position, and some of the ice was preventing them from doing that, and so they refused to continue wiping at all. I tried turning the wipers on/off and changing speed, but nothing would get them running again. Thankfully the back road I was on had no other cars, I had to stop on the road (I had zero visibility) and get out to clear under the wipers. Clearing was also hard due to the hood overhang design covering the wiper area needing to be cleared. If this had happened on the highway it would have been very serious.
While using adaptive cruise control on the highway, my car almost rear ended the car in front of me when it surged ahead around a slight curve in the road. I was travelling approximately 5mph below the set cruise speed due to the traffic ahead. It appears that my vehicle lost radar sight of the car in front and tried to get back up to the set speed. This has happened on multiple occasions now.
When in Highway Drive Assist mode, where the system controls the speed and lane keep and lane change, the system can disengage without any visual or audio warning. This causes dangerous scenarios where the driver believes the car is in control but it is not.
The wipers stopped working completely when some slush slid down my windshield and got piled up at the base of the windshield where the wipers sit. I had to pull over and scoop out the slush before they would resume working. This was super dangerous as not having the wipers work it was hard to see to safely operate my car.
When you're at speeds greater than 15mph and hit a bump or encounter a surface irregularity (pothole, expansion joint, etc.), the Kia EV9 GT Line goes into a porpoising sway, causing the entire chassis to become unsettled. The swaying is much more pronounced when only one side of the encounters the irregularity, or if the car is not perfectly perpendicular to the irregularity and the left and right wheels pass over the irregularity at different times. The effect is especially noticeable in the rear. This unsettling 'swaying' increases with speed and happens both while driving straight and through corners. The rear end feels as though it's hopping or skipping from side to side. Out of all the vehicles I’ve driven—and I’ve driven quite a few—I’ve never experienced anything like this. During wet and slippery conditions, driving over small bumps or manhole covers has even caused the vehicle to lose traction and begin spinning - even while traveling at 25mph in a straight line. I purchased the EV9 in early 2024 and it has had the issue since delivery. I have heard many other EV9 GT Line owners complain of similar suspension issues and I am frankly surprised that there has not been a string of crashes and fatalities linked to the issue. I have spoken to the Kia dealership several times but because the vehicle is new they claim that they have not heard any other reports and they do not have the experience to diagnose or fix the issue.
The back end of the car will move back and forth laterally when driving over uneven road. In particular it appears to happen when driving over a bump while also driving at a slight left or right angle. After the bump the back end will oscillate laterally. This is extremely concerning to the driver and passengers, it can feel like the car is going to bounce out of its lane.
The car died in my garage after only owning it for 4 weeks
Since taking delivery of the vehicle I noticed the vehicle "hops around" when encountering irregularities in the road. The vehicle feels unsettled over seams, bumps, or uneven surfaces, even minor ones like raised seams or potholes. This happens both while driving straight and through corners, with the rear end feeling like it's skipping, hopping, or "porpoising." The issue is most noticeable at highway speeds.
The contact owns a 2014 Kia EV9. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the Lane Keep Assist failed, and the vehicle started pulling to the outside of the intended lane. There were no warning lights illuminated. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown.
