THE 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT TROUBLE SINCE I PURCHASED IT IN 2005. IT HAS ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS WITH OVERHEATING, WHEN I TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT IT, THEY TOLD ME THE FREELANDER BURNT THROUGH COOLANT FASTER THAN MOST CARS. I DID NOT THINK IT WAS NORMAL FOR IT TO BURN THROUGH A GALLON OF COOLANT EVERY 3-4 WEEKS. THIS HAS CONTINUED SINCE THEN. UNTIL NOW, MY FREELANDER"S TIMING BELT BROKE ( AT 60,800) WELL BEFORE RECOMMENDED CHANGING OF THE BELT AND HAS ESSENTIALLY TOTALED MY CAR. SINCE IT WILL COST ME A MINIMUM OF $4,500 TO FIX IT. (UP TO $8,500). THE CAR IS ONLY WORTH $8,000. *TR
I HAVE REPLACED FOUR WINDOW REGULATORS IN MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER AND JUST NOW REALIZED THAT I AM ABOUT TO REPLACE THE FIFTH. THE COST IS OUTRAGEOUS BUT THE POOR DESIGN IS ABSORB. EACH TIME THE REGULATOR BROKE IT STUCK IN AN OPEN POSITION LEAVING ME NO OPTION BUT CONTINUE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. *TR
AT 48,000 MILES, I'M BEING TOLD I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE SINCE COOLANT IS LEAKING INTO THE OIL. THIS IS THE LATEST IN A LONG LINE OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. ON MY 2002 FREELANDER SE *TR
I TOOK MY 2002 FREELANDER INTO BRITISH MOTORS IN SAN FRANCISCO IN MARCH OF 07 WITH 55,000 MILES ON IT AND ASKED FOR THE 60,000 MILE TUNE UP. THEY SAID NO - SOLD ME NEW BRAKES AND TIRES INSTEAD AND DID AN OIL CHANGE. I ONLY DRIVE 5,000 MILES A YEAR AND SO I KNEW IT WOULD BE A WHILE BEFORE I HIT 60K. I TOOL THE CAR IN WHEN I HAD 63,364 MILES ON IT AND THEY DID THE TUNE UP. THERE WERE MANY SLOPPY THINGS THAT HAPPENED DURING THIS TIME BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT AFTER THE TUNEUP THE TRANSMISSION FAILED - AND THEN THEY SAID I WAS OVER THE LIMIT FOR THE MILES AND VOIDED THE WARRANTY. I HAVE SINCE READ ABOUT HUNDREDS OF OTHER FREELANDER OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME OR SIMILAR PROBLEMS. WHEN THEY CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID THE TRANSMISSIONS SOMETIMES FAIL. I HAD A FRIEND WHO HAS THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPEN ONLY SHE DROVE A RANGE ROVER. BRITISH MOTORS BLAMED LAND ROVER AND LAND ROVER CUSTOMER COMPLAINT DEPT IS USELESS AND DOES NOTHING. THIS IS HAPPENING TO SO MANY LAND ROVER OWNERS THAT IT IS APPALLING AND SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. THE FREELANDER SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED - AND THOSE OF US DRIVING IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN WARNED ABOUT ENGINE PROBLEMS AND WHAT COULD HAPPEN WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FLUID IS CHANGED IN ROUTINE TUNE UPS. I PAID $2,300 TO GET THE TRANSMISSION REPAIRED SO I COULD GET MY CAR OUT. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE BUREAU OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIRS IN CA. THIS WHOLE THING IS A SCAM AND HAS COST ME A LOT OF MONEY AND TIME. FROM GOOGLING: FREELANDER ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS -- II SEE THAT HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT VERY LITTLE GETS DONE ABOUT IT! *TR 1
I WAS DRIVING ON I45 ON MY WAY TO WORK, WHEN MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER STOPPED WORKING WITHOUT ANY NOTICE. I HAD TO QUICKLY DO ANYTHING I COULD TO GE OUT OFF THE FREEWAY WITH NO POWER. IT WAS ONE OF THE SCARIEST DAYS OF MY LIFE. THANKFULLY THE OTHER DRIVERS NOTICED THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR AND SLOWED AND I WAS ABLE TO EXIT. I HAD TO GET THE CAR TOWED TO A SHOP WHERE THEY TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED A NEW FUEL PUMP. I GOT IT REPLACED AND IT WORKED WELL FOR 2 MONTH AND NOW ITS LEAKING FUEL. THE MOTOR IS ALSO LEAKING ANTIFREEZE ALL OVER THE PLACE. YOU NEED TO LOOK INTO THIS CARS. THERE'S TO MANY PROBLEMS WITH IT AND COMPLAINTS TO GO ALONG. THANKS *TR
I HAVE A 2002 LANDROVER FREELANDER AND RECENTLY I AD TO PUT COOLANT IN THE CAR ALMOST EVERY DAY. THE MECHANIC STATES IT IS A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR JOB, IF THE HOSE CAN BE FOUND AND REPLACED. THE CAR HAVE BEEN INOPERABLE FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS NOW. I LOVE THE FREELANDER, BUT IT APPEAR TO BE VERY PROBLEMATIC. *TR
PROBLEM STARTED OUT WITH ENGINE OIL LEAKING INTO ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM ON OR ABOUT SEPTEMBER 15, 2008. ENGINE COOLANT LEAKED FROM SYSTEM, CAUSING VEHICLE TO OVERHEAT AND STALL IN TRAFFIC. ROOT CAUSE OF FAILURE STILL TO BE DETERMINED. VEHICLE IS NOW OUT OF SERVICE. *TR
AFTER SEVERAL INCIDENTS WITH MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER TYPE S OVERHEATING, I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM. THE COOLANT WAS FOUND TO BE LOW, AND A DISCUSSION WITH THE MECHANIC AND THE SHOP PERSON INDICATED THAT THEIR IS NO EXTERNAL LEAKS, AND THAT THE COOLANT MAY BE LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CYLINDERS/HEADS ARE MADE OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS, AND THAT A GAP MAY HAVE FORMED THERE CAUSING THE COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE ENGINE. I WAS TOLD THAT IF THE COOLANT CONTINUES TO LEAK WITHOUT ANY VISIBLE SIGNS OF EXTERNAL PROBLEMS, THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE 57,500 ORIGINAL MILES ON THIS VEHICLE, AND ALL REQUIRED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN DONE. IT IS NOW OUT OF MANUFACTURES WARRANTY, AND I DO NOT HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I HAVE SEEN THOUSANDS OF POSTINGS ON THE INTERNET RELATING TO THIS PROBLEM, WITH MODELS FROM 2000 TO 2005, THE YEARS THE CAR WAS AVAILABLE IN THE US. IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE NO VIABLE REPLACEMENT ENGINES AVAILABLE THAT DO NOT HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM SINCE, THE VEHICLE WAS DISCONTINUED IN 2005. I HAVE 2002 LANDROVER FREELANDER WITH LESS THAN 35000 MILES. I HAVE TRANSMISSION FAILURE, REPEATED BRAKE PROBLEMS, COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEMS, WINDOW AND DOOR OPERATOR PROBLEMS, TO INCLUDE THE LOCK ON THE DRIVER SIDE NOT BEEN ABLE TO BE OPENED WITH THE REMOTE. THE HESITATE WHEN ACCELERATING UP HILLS. I HAVE HAD TO SHIP THE CAR BACK TO THE STATES FOR REPAIR. I AM NOT HAPPY WITH WHAT I THOUGHT WAS MY DREAM CAR. THE COMPANY IS NOT HELPFUL. THE DEALERSHIP THAT REPAIRED MY CAR WAS VERY ABRUPT WHEN THEY DEALT WITH ME. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM VEHICLE. TOO MANY COMPLAINTS WITHOUT ANY REMEDY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE ENGINE FAILED TO RESTART AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE CYLINDER AND PISTONS. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE REPAIR SHOP AND HAS BEEN THERE FOR ONE MONTH WAITING ON THE REPLACEMENT PARTS. THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED THAT THE PARTS WERE DISCONTINUED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED EVERY MONTH FOR ONE YEAR FOR OTHER DEFECTS PRIOR TO THIS RECENT FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 93,000.
MECHANICAL PROBLEMS IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASE REQUIRED 4-5 TRIPS TO DEALERSHIP BEFORE THEY FIXED IT. I DON'T' RECALL THE EXACT PROBLEM. SUNROOF MOTOR DIED & HAD TO BE REPLACED. LEFT REAR WINDOW REGULATOR DIED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. RIGHT REAR WINDOW REGULATOR DIED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. BROKEN LATCH ON HOOD HAD TO BE REPLACED. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND EXCESSIVE CRANKING 6/1/02 AND 8/17/02 DEALERSHIP CLEARED CODES NO REPAIRS. SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT AND EXCESSIVE CRANKING 9/17/02, DEALERSHIP REPLACED LEAKING FUEL PUMP. SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT AND SHIFTING PROBLEMS 3/2006, DEALERSHIP SENT ME HOME NO REPAIRS. SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT AND CAR LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING, THROTTLE BODY HAD A SHORT AND DEALERSHIP REPLACED. SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT AND DELAY IN SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD 9/1/08. HAVE NOT HAD THIS DIAGNOSED YET. SUSPECT BAD SOLENOIDS OR TRANSMISSION FAILURE. *TR
JUST BOUGHT THE 2002 LAND ROVER - FREELANDER 2 WEEKS AGO, IT HAS 68K MILES, THEN ITS TRANSMISSION TOTALLY FAILED, IT WILL NOT GO INTO REVERSE / BACKWARD. ALSO, WHEN IT IS SWITCHING GEAR, THE GEAR 2 & 3 ARE VERY VERY ROUGH. TODAY, THE MECHANIST TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE REPLACED. *TR

MY 2002 LANDROVER FREELANDER HAS SPENT MORE TIME IN THE MECHANIC SHOP THAN IT HAS SPENT IN MY DRIVEWAY! BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, I TOOK IT INTO THE ENCINO DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LAST TIME I HAD IT TOWED THERE, THE CAR HAD JUST DUMPED ALL OF ITS FLUIDS ONTO THE FLOOR AND WAS SMOKING AGAIN. THIS KEEPS HAPPENING OVER AND OVER AND OVER. DEALERSHIP SAID THEY CHECKED AND THE CAR WAS FINE. WARRANTY EXPIRED AND PROBLEM CONTINUED TO OCCUR. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THERE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION -- MUST BE REPLACED. ALSO HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE COOLANT LEAKING--HAVE TRIED TO FIX THE ISSUE SEVERAL TIMES--STILL HAVE SAME PROBLEM. MECHANIC DISCOVERED A CRACK IN THE ENGINE. IF THIS IS STARTING TO SOUND FAMILIAR IT IS BECAUSE THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT FORUMS ONLINE WITH 2002 FREELANDER OWNERS ALL SAYING THE SAME THING! WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS???!!!! THE REPAIRS WERE EXTREMELY COSTLY FOR ME AS A COLLEGE STUDENT AND NOW AS A MOTHER OF A NEWBORN I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE THE CAR FOR FEAR OF SOMETHING SERIOUS HAPPENING! WE BOUGHT THE FREELANDER 2002 IN APRIL OF 2002. BRAND NEW. STARTED TO HAVE BREAK PROBLEMS AND ALARM SYSTEM PROBLEMS, ALONG WITH CONSTANT AIR COOLANT/BROKEN AIR CONDITIONING PROBLEMS THAT WE HAD TO TAKE THE CAR IN FOR REPAIRS. THE TRANSMISSION BROKE DOWN IN 2006 AT APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES. THE DEALER HAGGLED WITH US BECAUSE THE WARRANTY HAD JUST EXPIRED TWO MONTHS EARLIER! WE ENDED UP PAYING APPROXIMATELY $2,000 TOWARDS A NEW TRANSMISSION THAT WE NOW DISCOVER HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR LAND ROVER FREELANDERS. THEN, AS I WAS DRIVING MY CAR A FEW DAYS AGO TO BE SERVICED, THE CAR STARTED TO OVERHEAT. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER AND WE ARE NOW TOLD THAT THE ENGINE HAS BROKEN DOWN AND THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS TO HAVE THE ENGINE REPLACED. WE TOLD THE DEALER THAT THE ENGINE HAS HAD WELL DOCUMENTED DEFECT ISSUES FROM MANUFACTURE AND THAT THE INNOCENT CONSUMER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. OUR CAR IS NOW UNDRIVABLE AND ONLY HAS 37,000 MILES ON IT. WE ARE BEING TOLD THAT. *TR
LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2002. 62 THOUSAND MILES AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. THIS IS GOING TO COST ME AROUND $4,000 TO FIX. APPARENTLY THIS VEHICLE IS KNOWN TO BE A COMPLETE PIECE OF CRAP. *TR
WE WERE HEARING A LOUD NOISE AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS. AS IT TURNS OUT WE WERE FIRST TOLD THAT IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE, HOWEVER AFTER CAREFUL DIAGNOSTICS WE WERE FINALLY TOLD THAT IT NEEDS A NEW INTAKE MANIFOLD. THIS IS ABOUT $2200. THAT INCLUDES LABOR COSTS AND PART. I HAVE NO MONEY AND THE CAR JUST SITS IN THE FRONT OF MY HOUSE AND IS NOT DRIVABLE AT ALL. I STILL OWE SO MUCH ON THIS CAR AND HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO.... *TR
THIS CAR HAD ONLY 61000 MILES ON IT AND NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. COOLANT LEAKED INTO ENGINE JUST 3 WEEKS AFTER I PAID $2K FOR WORK ON THE COOLANT SYSTEM (RESERVOIR, HOSES) AND A PLENUM VALVE REPLACEMENT TO ADDRESS THE SAME PROBLEM IT WAS THEN EXPERIENCING (OVERHEATING AND ENGINE REVVING). DEALER SAID A PISTON SLEEVE HAD SLIPPED. FULL ENGINE REPLACEMENT REQUIRED. THIS CAR HAS RECEIVED ALL OF ITS RECOMMENDED SERVICE APPOINTMENTS AND HAD A NEW TRANSMISSION AT 50K MILES. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER SE WITH 65,032 MILES, AND I WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION NOW HAS TO BE REPLACED OR REBUILT AT A COST BETWEEN $3500, TO $4500. I BOUGHT THE SUV IN 2004 WITH 6,300 MILES, AND SINS THEN AT ABOUT 12,000 TO 13,000 MILES THE WATER PUMP WENT OUT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. ALSO THE ON-BOARD COMPUTER HAD TO BE REPLACED AS WILL AT ABOUT 33,000 MILES. I CALLED COSTUMER SERVICE AT LAND ROVER AND THEY TOLLED ME THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I ASKED THEM IF IT WAS NORMAL FOR THIS SUV?S TRANSMISSION TO GO OUT AT 65,000 MILES, THEY WOULD NOT ANSWER MY QUESTION. *TR

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH MY 2002 LANDROVER FREELANDER. LAST MONTH THE GASOLINE BROKE WHILE DRIVING, SPEWING OUT A FULL TANK OF GAS. THIS MONTH, ON MY WAY FOR ROUTINE SERVICE, ALMOST 200 MILES AWAY, THE TRANSMISSION WENT. I HAD IT TOWED (FOR THE FOURTH TIME) TO LANDROVER SPOKANE WHO QUOTED ME A PRICE OF 7100 DOLLARS TO FIX MY TRANSMISSION. THIS CAR IS JUST COMING UP TO 55,000 MILES. *TR

WE PURCHASED A 02 FREELANDER BY LAND ROVER AND IT HAS TURNED OUT TO BE A LEMON. REPAIRS AFTER REPAIRS. IT OVERHEATS AND WHEN IT DOES IT OVERHEATS THE STARTER CAUSING IT TO FAIL AS WELL IF IT OVERHEATS TOO MUCH IT CAUSES THE HEAD GASKETS TO BLOW OR A CRACK ON THE ENGINE. *TR
SINCE I PURCHASED MY 2002 LANDROVER FREELANDER IN AUG OF 2007 WITH 63456 MILES ON IT, I HAVE TAKEN IT IN FOR NUMEROUS COSTLY REPAIRS. THE FIRST BEING 12 DAYS AFTER THE PURCHASE IN ATTEMPT TO FIX WHAT I THOUGHT WAS CAUSING THE DISAPPEARANCE OF MY COOLANT, THE CRACKED COOLANT RESERVOIR WAS REPLACED, ONLY TO FIND OUT TO THE ENGINE WOULD CONTINUALLY OVERHEAT AND I WOULD BECOME STRANDED ON THE ROAD ON AT LEAST 3 OCCASIONS EVEN AFTER I HAD TAKEN IT IN BY THIS POINT AND HAD IT SUCTION TESTED TO SEE IF A LEAK COULD BE LOCATED WITH IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM AND WAS TOLD IT PASSED. SO I CONTINUED TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE SHUTTLING MYSELF TO AND FROM SCHOOL AND WORK, STOCKING MY VEHICLE WITH NECESSARY COOLANT TO MAINTAIN THE PROPER LEVEL. AFTER A TRAUMATIC INCIDENT ON THE FREEWAY IN I JUNE 2008, WHERE I WAS FORCED TO QUICKLY PULL TO THE SHOULDER GOING FORM 60 TO ZERO WHILE STILL IN TRAFFIC, I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE IT SERVICED AGAIN WHERE I SOON FOUND OUT THE COOLANT CONTAMINATED THE OIL BECAUSE OF THE SEAL SLIPPING (THROUGH RESEARCH OF MY OWN I HAVE LEARNED THE MATERIAL THE SEAL IS MADE OF IS IN ADEQUATE TO HOLD HIGH TEMPERATURES FOR EVEN A REASONABLE LIFE OF THE CAR). UNABLE TO AFFORD THE COSTLY REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE WHICH WAS ADVISED AT THIS TIME, 6/08 (OVER THE WORTH OF THE VEHICLE AT $7,579 + TAXES NEW AND WITH MULTIPLE RESEARCH ATTEMPTS DONE TO FIND A USED ONE WITH NO SUCCESS BECAUSE IT'S SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE MODELS) I BOUGHT SOME TIME WITH AN ENGINE FLUSH ONLY TO HAVE THE INTERNAL DAMAGE THE SEAL FAILURE HAD CAUSED RESULT IN THE COMPLETE SEIZURE OF MY ENGINE AS OF 1/09. I HAVE BEEN PUT IN HARMS WAY IN NEAR MISSES OF CAUSING AN ACCIDENT AS I UNCONTROLLABLY COME TO A STOP AND SOON AFTER SIT HELPLESSLY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THROUGH NO FAULT OF MY OWN, COUNTLESS TIMES DO TO THE MANUFACTURES NEGLIGENCE FOR THE SAFETY OF THE OPERATOR. EVEN AFTER THIS WHOLE ORDEAL, I STILL FIND MYSELF FORTUNATE TO ONLY BE OUT A COSTLY VEHICLE AND NOT THE LOSS OF MY LIFE. *TR
AFTER BUYING THE CAR USED @ 42,000 MILES MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER WAS IMMEDIATELY DIAGNOSED A MONTH AFTER INTERMITTENT STARTING PROBLEMS WITH A BLOWN HEAD GASKET AND I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. WE BOUGHT A LAND ROVER FREELANDER 9 MONTHS AGO FROM A USED CAR DEALERSHIP. 2 WEEKS AGO WE NOTICED THE HEATING GAGE GOING UP AND DOWN AND WE NEEDED A LOT OF COOLANT. YESTERDAY, THE ENGINE FAILED AND WE WERE TOLD WE NEED A NEW ENGINE. ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC IT WAS A PROBLEM IN THE HEATING SYSTEM BECAUSE THE COOLANT IS LEAKING INTO AN UNKNOWN AREA. LANDROVER SAYS SINCE WE DIDN'T BUY IT FROM THEM, THEY WILL NOT HELP US. IN ORDER TO FILE A COMPLAINT, WE MUST TOW THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, PAY THE DEALERSHIP TO EXAMINE THE CARE AND THEN WANT 2 TO 6 MONTHS FOR AN ENGINE, POSSIBLY A TRANSMISSION AS WELL TO BE ORDER. THEY ARE BACKORDERED NATION WIDE. THE CAR HAS ON 40,000 MILES AND HAS HAD GOOD MAINTENANCE REGULARLY. *TR

I BOUGHT AN 02 LAND ROVER FREELANDER FROM A USED CAR DEALER AND AFTER ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF, AT ONLY 60,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. THE CAR NO LONGER DRIVES. NO ONE WILL WORK ON IT AND MY ONLY OPTION IS TO REPLACE THE WHOLE TRANNY FOR ABOUT 4 GRAND. I STILL OWE A BUNCH AND I JUST KEEP SHELLING OUT THE TOWING COSTS TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH MY 2002 FREELANDER. MAINLY RELATED TO ENGINE OVER-HEATING WHICH CAUSES COOLANT TO EVAPORATE AND ALSO THE COOLANT LEAKS INTO THE ENGINE. I MENTIONED THIS PROBLEM WITH THE DEALER WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN WARRANTY, BUT THEN THEY SIMPLY REFUSED TO TAKE CARE OF THE CORE PROBLEM WHICH IS THE ENGINE. THIS ENGINE OVER-HEATING RESULTED IN SPOILING THE A/C BLOWER AND HEATER CORE, AND ALSO I WAS LEFT STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NO-WHERE 4 TIMES. AND EACH TIME I HAD TO TOW THE VEHICLE ($150 EACH TIME) AND THE ONLY RESPONSE FROM DEALERSHIP WAS TO KEEP ADDING MORE COOLANT. I AM NOW OUT OF WARRANTY AND NOT SURE WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS VEHICLE. I CANNOT USE THIS TO GO ANYWHERE (IT CAN FAIL ANYTIME), DON'T FEEL LIKE CHEATING SOMEBODY SELLING THIS CAR. MY 2002 LANDROVER FREELANDER'S ENGINE FAILED AT AROUND 70,000 MILES WITHOUT ANY WARNING FROM THE VEHICLES WARNING LIGHT SYSTEM AND JUST AS THE VEHICLE'S ORIGINAL 5 YEAR WARRANTY ENDED. THE DEALERS REPAIR SHOP ATTRIBUTED THE ENGINE FAILURE TO OVERHEATING. DUE TO THE MANUFACTURE DISCONTINUING MANUFACTURING THIS ENGINE'S THE DEALER HAD TO LOCATE A "REBUILT" ENGINE AS A REPLACEMENT. THE TOTAL COST OF THE "REBUILT ENGINE AND LABOR WAS AN ASTOUNDING $7,500.00. DUE TO THE HIGH INCIDENT OF THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE FAILING AND THE MANUFACTURER NOT MAKING THE ENGINE ANY LONGER IT TOOK AROUND 3 MONTHS TO PROCURE A REPLACEMENT "REBUILT" ENGINE AND INSTALL IT. ALSO, THE SUNROOF MOTOR AND THE REAR PASSENGER WINDOW MOTOR BOTH FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF AROUND $1,200.00. MY DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT I JOIN A CLASS ACTION LAW SUITE IF I COULD FIND ONE DEALING WITH THIS VEHICLE'S CLEAR LEMON QUALITIES. I UNDERSTAND FROM OTHER FREELANDER OWNERS THE NEXT THING TO GO WILL LIKELY BE THE TRANSMISSION. ALL OF THIS LEAVES ME WITH VERY LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN THE VEHICLE'S SAFETY OR RELIABILITY. I FEEL THE OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES FOR THIS ENGINE REPLACEMENT ARE UNWARRANTED AND SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MANUFACTURE. THE COOLANT IS LEAKING INTO THE OIL AND AFTER HAVING THE HEAD GASKETS REPLACED AND A COOLER PART REPLACED, THE DEALER NOW BELIEVES THAT THERE IS A CRACK IN THE SLEEVE. THERE APPARENTLY IS A BACK ORDER ON REPLACEMENT ENGINES SO I WILL HAVE TO COUGH UP $$$ TO KEEP THE OIL DRAINED AND COOLANT FILLED UNTIL ONE IS AVAILABLE. WE HAD JUST HAD OUR CAR IN FOR SERVICING PRIOR TO A LONGER DRIVE. WHILE WE WERE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, OUR CAR ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE ENGINE "REVVED" WITHOUT ANY INCREASE IN SPEED. ONCE HOME, CONTACTED OUR DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY PROCEEDED TO TELL US THAT WE WOULD REQUIRE A NEW TRANSMISSION WHEN WE WERE ONLY JUST OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY COULD NOT TELL US WHAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS - ONLY THAT IT WOULD COST UPWARDS OF $6000 TO FIX IT BY REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. PRIOR TO THIS, OUR DEALERSHIP HAD OUR LAND ROVER FREELANDER FOR 4 WEEKS FIXING OTHER KNOWN PROBLEMS SUCH AS THE COOLANT SYSTEM, AGAIN, JUST OUT OF WARRANTY FOR A FIX OF OVER $3000; ONCE IT WAS RETURNED, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON IMMEDIATELY (I.E. ON OUR WAY HOME FROM PICKING THE CAR UP) - I RETURNED IMMEDIATELY WITH THE VEHICLE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE BLOCK HAD BEEN CRACKED WHICH WOULD REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL $2000 PLUS IN REPAIRS (ALTHOUGH THEY DID DISCOUNT US ON THIS REPAIR - MORE THAN LIKELY BECAUSE THEY HAD CAUSED IT). WE HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT DIFFICULTY WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE ISSUES BEGAN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY FROM THE DATE OF PURCHASE. ADDITIONALLY, THE LAND ROVER SERVICE PEOPLE ARE LESS THAN HELPFUL. I BELIEVE THEY ARE DECEPTIVE, ARROGANT, AND LACK THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIRED TO FULLY SERVICE A VEHICLE. I HAVE GONE THROUGH THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS TO LOCATE SOMEONE WHOM I TRUST TO SERVICE THIS VEHICLE; FINALLY, NOW THAT THE CARE IS OUT OF WARRANTY WE WILL BE GOING TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY WERE ABLE TO WALK ME THROUGH WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR

2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER DEFECTIVE ENGINE REPLACEMENT *CW AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE ENGINE HAD A DESIGN FLAW. THE CONSUMER WAS ALSO INFORMED IT WOULD COST$5,800, BUT THE REPLACEMENT ENGINE ALSO HAD A DESIGN FLAW. THE VEHICLE HAD A COOLANT LEAK. THE FIRST COOLANT LEAK WAS FOUND DURING AN INSPECTION. THE COOLANT OVERFLOW RESERVOIR WAS REPLACED DUE TO A CRACK IN THE PLASTIC CONTAINER. THE SECOND LEAK HAD TO BE PERFORMED DUE TO THE THERMOSTAT LEAKING. UPON COMPLETION OF THE COOLANT LEAK REPAIR, THE TECHNICIAN NOTICED THERE WAS A KNOCKING TYPE NOISE IN THE ENGINE. THE CONSUMER BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE NOISE HAD BECOME LOUDER. AFTER LISTENING TO THE MOTOR AND ISOLATING THE KNOCKING NOISE, IT WAS DETERMINED THE NOISE WAS IN THE AREA OF THE #2 CYLINDER CONNECTING ROD DEEP INTO THE ENGINE BLOCK. A CAUSE WAS NEVER DETERMINED FOR THE FAILURE OF THE ENGINE.
