TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE TAILGATE, IT WOULD NOT UNLOCK, REGARDLESS IF SHE USED THE KEYLESS REMOTE OR MANUALLY ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE DOOR. SHE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER AND REAR DRIVER SIDE DOORS WOULD NOT UNLOCK WITH THE KEYLESS REMOTE. THE DOORS WILL ONLY UNLOCK MANUALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT ALL OF THE MALFUNCTIONING DOORS NEEDED THE DOOR LATCHES REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN SERVICED FOR THE FAILURES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 84,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS PRESENT. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE HEAD GASKET SEAL MALFUNCTIONED AND LEAKED OIL INTO THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REBUILT. THE REPAIR WAS NOT MADE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 52,000.
I ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM WITH TRANSMISSION WHICH WAS REPLACED ONCE 2 YEAR AGO AND NOW I NEED TO DO OUT OF MY POCKET ALL OVER AGAIN. *TR
IN 2006 MY WATER RESERVOIR BUSTED IN MY 2002 FREELANDER FREEZING THE ENGINE WITH A REPAIR COST OF OVER $7,000. LAST WEEK MY TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING AND NOW I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS GONE WITHOUT ANY LEAKAGE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING TO GET DINNER WITH MY DAUGHTER AND MY LANDROVER FREELANDER JUST FELL DEAD WHILE DRIVING. THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL IF IT HAD HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY HOME LESS THAN 2 MILES AWAY AND HAD A CERTIFIED LAND ROVER MECHANIC COME TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE MOTOR LOCKED UP FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE CAR WAS NOT LOW ON OIL, NOR HAD IT BEEN OVERHEATING AND THERE WERE NO OTHER LIQUIDS MIXED IN THE OIL. THE ONLY OPTION GOING FORWARD WOULD BE TO HAVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD ONE MECHANICAL FAILURE AFTER ANOTHER AND IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY SPENT. *TR

NOW AM TOLD THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE AT 46K MI. WATER MUST BE ADDED EVERY DAY TO USE THE VEHICLE, BUT THE DEALER REFUSES TO DO REPAIRS BECAUSE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED A MONTH AGO. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. WHILE SLOWING DOWN AND TURNING AT 10 MPH, THE STEERING RACK MADE A LOUD CRUNCHING SOUND AND THE CONTACT LOST TOTAL STEERING CONTROL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE RACK AND PINION FAILED. THE RACK HAD BEEN REPLACED THE PREVIOUS YEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 82,558. PURCHASED NEW IN JANUARY 2002, SERVICES EXCLUSIVELY AT LR DEALERSHIPS IN RICHMOND VA, AND CHARLOTTE NC. ANTI-FREEZE ODOR INSIDE THE VEHICLE WITHIN FIRST 3 MONTHS. INSPECTED AND DISMISSED BY DEALERSHIP. BRAKE FAILURE, USED EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP VEHICLE AT LESS THEN 8500 MILES, THREE MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. BRAKE PAD AND ROTOR REPLACEMENT REQUIRED. THE YEAR IS ACCURATE,MONTH AND DATE ARE APPROXIMATIONS STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH OVERHEATING AND COOLANT LEAKS. COOLANT WOULDN'T PUDDLE UNDER VEHICLE,THOUGH.BUT I COULD SMELL IT SOMETIMES WITH WINDOWS OPEN. THEN,ONE DAY IT WOULD NOT START. TOWED IT TO LAND ROVER DEALER AND OVER THE COURSE OF 3 DAYS,THEY COULDN'T START IT,EITHER. WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A NEW ENGINE.PAID OUT $5800+.NOW,WITH 104,000 MILES,IT'S LOSING COOLANT,AGAIN. THEY CLAIMED THE OVER FLOW CONTAINER WAS LEAKING. HAD IT REPLACED. AND IT IS STILL LOSING COOLANT.IT IS NOT PUDDLING UNDER THE TRUCK.I SAW,ONLINE,WHERE THE FREELANDER HAS A POSSIBLE ENGINE DEFECT,WITH CYLINDER SLEEVES AND GASKET PROBLEMS.DO I HAVE ANY RECOURSE WITH LAND ROVER? WE PURCHASED A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. THE CAR HAS HAD NUMEROUS OCCASIONS OF OVERHEATING, LOSING COOLANT AND OIL AND WE HAVE NOW BEEN TOLD A NEW ENGINE IS NEEDED. THE CAR OWNER WAS ALSO TOLD AT 50,756 MILES THAT A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS NECESSARY. APPARENTLY LAND ROVER IS AWARE OF THIS RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE, BUT IS DOING NOTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEMS. THERE HAS BEEN OCCASIONS WHEN THE CAR STOPS OR OVERHEAT IS CAUSING POTENTIAL SAFETY CONCERNS/PROBLEMS FOR THE CAR OCCUPANTS AS WELL AS OTHER DRIVERS. *TR
OUR WELL-MAINTAINED 2002 FREELANDER HAD ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION FAILURE WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF REACHING 50,000 MILES. IN BOTH CASES THE FAILURES OCCURRED DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS OR INDICATIONS OF PROBLEMS. IN BOTH CASES THE LOSS OF POWER/CONTROL POSED A SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD TO EVERYONE IN THE CAR. ONE OF THESE EVENTS OCCURRED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING SERVICE AND SAFETY CHECK BY THE DEALER. THIS CARE IS SO BADLY DESIGNED THAT IS A DRIVING HAZARD AND SHOULD BE RECALLED IN ITS ENTIRETY. THE VERY EXTENSIVE INFORMATION ON MAJOR FAILURES WITHOUT WARNING ATTEST TO THE DANGERS THAT THIS VEHICLE IS IMPOSING ON THE PUBLIC ON A DAILY BASIS. *TR
LAND ROVER FREELANDER HSE 2002: AT 70,000 MILES, TRANSMISSION HALTS, SEIZING, RAPID RPM JUMPS; LESS THAN ONE MONTH LATER, THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY DIED. INOPERABLE CAR TOWED AND TRANSMISSION REBUILT AT PRIVATE SHOP. FIVE MILES FROM SHOP AFTER PICKUP, CAR SEIZED AND DIED. NOW, AN ADDITIONAL REPAIR OF THE "TRANSFER CASE," WHICH WE WERE TOLD CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. NOW, SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT ON; BATTERY KEEPS DYING. RAPID DEPRECIATION, FREQUENT REPAIRS OF BRAKES, BRAKE PADS, HEADLIGHTS, ETC. COMPLAINED TO MANUFACTURER 2/23/2007. CAR INOPERABLE AS OF THIS DATE. DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO -- OWE MORE THAN IT'S WORTH, CANNOT GET FULL NADA/KBB TRADE IN VALUE...FRUSTRATED AND DISAPPOINTED. AND OUT OF MONEY. *JB
OUR 2002 LANDROVER WAS PURCHASED USED AND THE MILEAGE STARTED AT 3,500. IT WAS A SHOW ROOM CAR. WHEN THE MILEAGE REACHED MID 40,000 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WE HEARD STRANGE NOISES COMING FROM ENGINE , AND THE CAR HAD TROUBLE ACCELERATING. WE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, AND MADE IT SO THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT AWAY. HOWEVER, THE CAR STILL DID NOT ACCELERATE WELL, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE ON FREEWAY. AFTER A WHILE, THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO DEALER AGAIN, AND ONCE MORE THEY WORKED ON IT, BUT THE RESULTS WERE SIMILAR. WHEN WE PASSED THE 50,000 MILEAGE MARK THE CAR STARTED TO FALL APART RAPIDLY. THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT, THE REAR DOOR DIDN'T OPEN FROM OUTSIDE, THE SUN ROOF BROKE, AND THE STARTER ALSO BROKE. THIS ALL HAPPENED VERY FAST. WHEN WE WENT TO DEALER, THEY SAID WE WERE NO LONGER COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH WE BOUGHT THE CAR AT 3,500 MILES TO START WITH. SO WE THOUGHT THAT WE WOULD BE COVERED UNTIL 53,500. THEREFORE, WE HAD TO PAY FOR ALL THE REPAIRS OURSELVES, AND THE TRANSMISSION ALONE COST US $5000 TO REPAIR. WE ARE WORRIED THAT THE CAR WILL CONTINUE TO BREAK DOWN THE LONGER WE HAVE IT AND WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.*AK
I BOUGHT MY 02 FREELANDER IN MARCH 06 WITH MY FEMA MONEY. I DESPERATELY NEEDED A CAR AFTER MINE FLOODED IN KATRINA. SINCE MY PURCHASE I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH THIS LEMON. I SEE FROM THE MANY BLOGS THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE. BETWEEN ME AND MY NOW EXPIRED WARRANTY WE'VE SPENT WELL OVER 5,000. PLEASE TELL ME IF THERE IS ANYTHING I CAN DO. I HAVE A LAND ROVER FREELAND THAT STARTED HAVING COOLANT LEAKAGE IN EARLY FEBRUARY OF 2007. I TRIED TO GET THE CAR IN TO GET FIXED AND WAS PUT OFF BY LAND ROVER UNTIL MY WARRANTY EXPIRED. THEY NEVER FIXED IT. IT LEAKS COOLANT CONSTANTLY, IT LOOSES POWER, IT OVER HEATS AND STEAMS, THE COOLANT IS AN OILY BROWN COLOR NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I FLUSH IT. THIS CAR HAS A BAD HEAD GASKET I'M AFRAID AND I'VE READ ABOUT AND KNOW MANY PEOPLE WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I'VE REPLACED THE RESERVOIR BOTTLE, FLUSHED THE COOLANT, REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT AND NOTHING FIXES THE PROBLEM. I HAD A MONTH LONG BATTLE WITH LAND ROVER TO FIX IT AND THEY REFUSED. THIS ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED, THIS IS A TERRIBLE CAR AND A HAZARD ON THE ROAD, I'M SCARED EVERY TIME I SEE A FREELANDER THAT IT'S GOING TO BLOW SOMETHING AND KILL SOMEONE ON THE FREEWAY, LAND ROVER SHOULD BE ASHAMED AND ALL THE CARS SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
FREELANDER 2002 HAS HAD MANY DEFECTS. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AT APPROX. 50K MILES & WAS REPLACED. POWER WINDOWS FAILED. A/C HOSE CRACKED & REPAIRED. MANIFOLD REPLACED. EXTERIOR BRAKE LIGHTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. ELECTRICAL POWER TO PASSENGER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM HAVE BEEN REPLACED. NOW, AT 70K MILES THE COOLANT LEAKING AND ENGINE KNOCKING. NOT WORTH REPLACING ENGINE AT THIS POINT. THIS CAR HAS COST MORE TO REPAIR THAN WHAT IS WAS WORTH. IT SHOULD BE RECALLED AS A LEMON & LAW SUIT AGAINST LAND ROVER. *TR
JUST BEFORE MAJOR ODOMETER READINGS OF 30000, 40000 ETC VEHICLE LOSES POWER. THE PROBLEM IS ELEVATED WHEN THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF AND STARTED AGAIN. *NM
I HAVE A LANDROVER FREELANDER 2002. I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR A YEAR. 2 MONTHS AFTER GETTING THE CAR IT NEEDED A HEAD GASKET WITH ONLY 87,000 MILES ON IT. FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD MINE LASTED LONGER THAN MOST. I HAD TO PUT 2000,00 INTO IT RIGHT AFTER PUTTING 4000,00 AS A DOWN PAYMENT. THE REPAIR SHOP SAID THAT LANDROVER RECOMMENDED IT GET A NEW MOTOR BUT THE WARRANTY COMP. WOULDN'T COVER IT. A NEW MOTOR COST ABOUT 7000,00. THIS IS GOING ON WITH HUNDREDS OF LANDROVERS, BECAUSE OF THE MATERIAL THE MOTOR IS MADE OUT OF. I CANT THINK OF ONE GOOD REASON WHY THERE SHOULD NOT BE A RECALL ON THIS CAR. PEOPLE ARE MAKING PAYMENTS ON CARS THEY CANT EVEN DRIVE. WE MAY BE FORCED TO DO A VOLUNTARY REPO SO WE CAN GET ANOTHER CAR. PEOPLES LIVES ARE BEING DESTROYED BECAUSE OF THIS CAR. DURING THE REPAIR OF OUR TRANSMISSION, WE BEGAN TO GET CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS. AFTER THE TRANSMISSION WAS FIXED, IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE. UPON DRIVING TO THE DEALER, THE CAR HAD NO POWER. THIS BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE AND DANGEROUS. TRYING TO GET UP TO THE 65 MPH SPEED LIMIT ON A FREEWAY TOOK ALMOST 2 MILES. I WAS ALSO WORRIED THE CAR WOULD STALL IN TRAFFIC DUE TO THIS CONDITION. THE CAR WAS SERVICED AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR AND THE VARIABLE INTAKE MOTORS 1 AND 2 HAD FAILED. THE VARIABLE INTAKE MOTORS HAD FAILED 15,000 MILES /12 MONTHS BEFORE AND WERE REPLACED DURING THE LONG BLOCK REPLACEMENT. AFTER ALL REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED THE CAR WAS TAKEN HOME. THE NEXT DAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE FOLLOWING DAY I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT. DURING THE DRIVE TO THE DEALER, THE SAME POWER PROBLEMS WERE PRESENT. THIS MADE DRIVING THIS CAR DANGEROUS IN THAT THERE WAS NO WAY TO KNOW IF IT WOULD ACCELERATE. THE DEALER THEN DETERMINED THAT THE AIR INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET HAD CRACKED. THIS TOO WAS A NEW PART FROM THE LONG BLOCK REPAIR 15,000 MILES /12 MONTHS PRIOR. RIGHT NOW THIS REPAIR IS BEING PERFORMED. THE LAND ROVER DEALER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THESE CAR SHOULD NOT BE OWNED WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF WARRANTY DUE TO THE NUMEROUS PROBLEMS. *JB
I HAVE A 2002 LANDROVER FREELANDER. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. I BOUGHT THE CAR BACK IN LATE 2005 AND IT HAD 32K MILES ON IT. IN JANUARY OF 2007 IT WAS OVERHEATING AND HAD A VERY LOUD SOUND TO THE ENGINE. I TOOK IT INTO THE SHOP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINE WENT BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. DURING THE TIME OF THE REPLACEMENT THE CAR ONLY HAD 59K MILES ON IT. NOW OVER YEAR LATER THE TRUCK IS OVERHEATING AGAIN AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE ENGINE IS FAILING AGAIN. I HAVE SPEND OVER 6,000 DOLLARS ON THIS SUV THAT IS CLEARLY A LEMON. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS AND INCLINES I NOTICED MY TRUCK ENGINE SLIPPING AND LOSING SPEED...WHEN THE DECENT INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON, I LOOKED INTO THE MANUAL ONLY TO FIND THAT THE MANUAL SHOWS THAT PARTICULAR CONTROL - BUT STATES NOTHING ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION- IT SAYS MY PROBLEM IS THE BRAKES. I TOOK MY TRUCK TO THE BRAKE SHOP AND YES MY BRAKES WERE IN NEED OF ITS SET OF 2ND ROTORS. SO I HAD THAT FIXED. ON MY WAY TO WORK A FEW NIGHTS AFTERWARDS, I WAS DRIVING UP A HILL WHEN MY TRUCK DIED. TRANSMISSION DEAD. MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER'S HAS ONLY 69,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS IN NEED OF ROTORS, A BACK WINDOW REGULATOR AND A TRANSMISSION. I HAVE ALREADY HAD OVERHEATING PROBLEMS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP MORE THAN I HAVE DRIVEN IT. HEADLIGHT ISSUES, BRAKES, WATER PUMP, TEMP GAUGE, ENGINE PROBLEMS, RADIATOR AND A FEW RECALLS. : (. *NM
IN OCTOBER OF 2002 MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED A 2002 FREELANDER FROM LANDROVER NORTH DADE OF FLORIDA. THE CAR WAS IN THE SHOWROOM WITH MINIMAL MILES. WITHIN THREE(3) DAYS OF PURCHASE WE RETURNED THE CAR BECAUSE IT SHOOK VIOLENTLY AFTER REACHING A SPEED OF 50 MPH. I MUST ADMIT THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED US OF SOME TYPE OF MALFUNCTION AND OFFERED US AN EXACT REPLACEMENT FREELANDER. AT THAT POINT WE SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR A REFUND OF OUR CASH PAYMENT AND LEFT LANDROVER ALONE. IT HAS BEEN A COMPLETELY EXPENSIVE NIGHTMARE DIVING THIS LEMON WITH ITS MYRIAD OF PROBLEMS: REPEATED OVERHEATING, LOSS OF POWER WITHOUT WARNING (OFTEN TIMES RESULTING IN CLOSE CALL SITUATIONS, REPLACED BRAKES AND ROTOR (LOST COUNT), NOT TO MENTION AN AIR CONDITIONER UNIT THAT ONLY WORKS ON FULL POWER(IMAGINE THAT IN FLORIDA). AT PRESENT, THE VEHICLE IS AT AN AUTHORIZED LANDROVER REPAIR SHOP BECAUSE THE WARRANTY HAS ENDED. THE LANDROVER DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN NEGLIGENT EVEN RUDE WHEN APPROACHED REGARDING ALL THESE MECHANICAL DEFECTS. TWO WEEKS OUT OF EVERY TWO TO THREE MONTHS, MY YOUNG CHILDREN AND I ARE WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION AND AT LEAST $800.00 MINIMUM, EACH TIME. MOST IMPORTANTLY HOWEVER IS MY FEAR TO DRIVE THE CAR AT ALL, AND TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, WE ARE OFFERED $3000.00 BY CARMAX WHEN WE ATTEMPTED TO SELL THEM A CAR WE PURCHASED FOR OVER $30,000. AFTER THE STEERING SYSTEM FAILED COMPLETELY A WEEK AGO (REPORTED SEPARATELY, ODI# 10173809), THE LAND ROVER DEALER IN SAN FRANCISCO REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY. WITHIN 2 HOURS AFTER I GOT THE CAR BACK, THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM FAILED COMPLETELY WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND THE CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. *JB

IN DEC '05 I HAD THE RIGHT REAR WINDOW OF A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER FAIL TO OPERATE. IT WAS TWO DAYS BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, AND COVERED. IN NOVEMBER '06 THE LEFT REAR WINDOW FAILED TO OPERATE. THE VEHICLE ON HAS 43K MILES BUT IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY DUE TO YEARS. BOTH WERE A RESULT OF A POOR CABLE OPERATING SYSTEM, AND IS A KNOWN COMMON PROBLEM ACCORDING TO THE LAND ROVER DEALER. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. WHILE DRIVING, THE HEAT SHUT DOWN INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT HER HEATER COIL FAILED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE HEATER COIL WAS REPAIRED. APPROXIMATELY TEN MONTHS LATER, THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC BUT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. AS THE INSPECTION WAS BEING PERFORMED, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO DISASSEMBLED THE ENGINE AND REMOVED THE HEAD GASKET. SHE LEFT THE VEHICLE AT THE DEALER AND A FEW DAYS LATER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE AND STATED THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION WOULD NOT HELP EITHER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 61,034.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO SLIP. I SCHEDULED A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER WHOM STATED THAT THE CAR COULD STILL BE USED. AS TIME WENT BY, THE FAILURE BECAME WORSE, UP TO THE POINT THAT YOU COULD NOT DEPEND ON THE TRANSMISSION TO WORK SAFELY. WE DECIDED TO PARK THE CAR AND WAIT FOR THE DAY OF SERVICE. THE CAR WAS TAKEN IN AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS DEEMED TO HAVE FAILED. THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND ALL GEAR CLUTCHES HAD FAILED. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. THE REPAIR SHOP DID ADMIT THAT LAND ROVER WAS AWARE OF DEFECTIVE UNITS, BUT DID NOT MAKE THIS PUBLIC. THE REPAIR HOUSE WAS SUPPOSED TO CONFIRM OFF THE OLD TRANSMISSION THAT IT WAS FROM THE BAD SET AND THIS WAS THE CASE. OUR TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED. *JB
THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE ENGINE SIMPLY GOES OUT; THUS AFFECTING THE STEERING. I BELIEVE THAT IT IS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM; HOWEVER, LANDROVER ROCKVILLE RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND FOUND NOTHING. IN OCTOBER, THE POWER WENT OUT WHILE MAKING A TURN AND I LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR HITTING A CURB. ALSO, THE SUNROOF HAS COST ME OVER $2K. FIRST, I WAS REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE TRACKS. THEN THE ROOF BEGAN TO LEAK AND I WAS REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY. THIS CAR WAS A MISTAKE FROM THE BEGINNING. *JB
I HAD MY CAR FOR LESS THAN A YEAR WHEN THE RADIATOR/CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SAID THE OIL WAS LEAKING INTO THE COOLANT (SOMETHING LIKE THAT.. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CARS). THEY HAD MY CAR FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO FIX THE PROBLEM WHICH I WAS TOLD BY THEIR SERVICE MANAGER AT THE TIME WAS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM WITH ALL LAND ROVER FREELANDERS OF 2002 AND 2003. I BROWSED THE INTERNET FOR MORE INFORMATION, AND SURE ENOUGH, MY CAR WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS KIND OF PROBLEM. THANKFULLY, WHEN I HAD ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THE CAR, I HAD ALSO PURCHASES THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTY. BUT THE WARRANTY RUNS OUT IN 2010, AND I'M SURE I'LL CONTINUE TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. I WANT TO SELL MY CAR, BUT I CAN'T JUSTIFY SELLING A CAR THAT I KNOW HAS SO MANY PROBLEMS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE CONTACT'S SON WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WHILE THE CHILD SAFETY LOCK WAS ENGAGED. THE TODDLER WAS SEATED IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND PROPERLY RESTRAINED IN A CHILD SAFETY SEAT AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE CHILD SAFETY LOCK WAS OPERATING BACKWARDS. AS A RESULT, THE DOOR COULD BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, BUT NOT FROM THE OUTSIDE. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER BEGAN TO OVERHEAT WHILE I WAS COMMUTING FROM NY TO NJ VIA HOLLAND TUNNEL. ONCE OUT OF THE TUNNEL I PULLED OVER TO CHECK UNDER THE HOOD. IT WAS SEVERELY HOT. I ADDED COOLANT AND WAITED APPROX 15 MINUTES BEFORE COMPLETING THE 7 MINUTE COMMUTE TO MY HOME. THE NEXT ATTEMPT TO START THE VEHICLE FAILED. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO LAND ROVER IN PARAMUS. THE ENGINE WAS BURNT OUT AND I HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED. *TR
MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER HAD AN ENGINE FAILURE IN SEPTEMBER 2006. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE OF VEHICLE AND COST ME $6,849.61 TO REPLACE SINCE I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. OTHER POPULAR PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE WINDOW MOTORS. MY SUNROOF AND TWO BACKDOOR WINDOWS WOULD NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. I COULD ONLY PAY TO REPAIR THE BACKDOOR WINDOWS AT THE EXPENSE OF $904.88. ALSO, THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR LOCK DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY, BUT I WAS NOT ABLE TO HAVE THAT FIXED. *TR
I PURCHASED THIS SUV WITH ONLY 14,000 ON IT WITH THE REMAINING FACTORY WARRANTY. AT 21,000 THE SUV ENGINE LEFT ME STRANDED ON THE INTERSTATE 2 HOURS FROM HOME. IT HAD TO BE TOWED. LAND ROVER FIXED IT, $13,000 THEY FOUND METAL SHAVINGS IN THE ENGINE AT 21,000 MILES. THE WARRANTY COVERED THE ENGINE, BUT THEY CHARGED ME $80 FOR AN OIL CHANGE~ YOU HAVE TO PUT NEW OIL IN A NEW ENGINE~~BUT THEY MADE ME PAY FOR THE OIL! THEY NAVIGATION SYSTEM SCREEN WENT BLACK AND KEEPS GOING OFF, THEY SAID THE WARRANTY WOULD PAY FOR IT, NEVER HEARD BACK AND THE WARRANTY IS OUT LAST MONTH. THEY FIXED A RECALL ON THE CARB THE LAST OIL CHANGE. THE BRAKES GROUND DOWN TO THE ROTORS, HAD TO REPLACE THEM AT 20,000. NEW ENGINE LEFT ME STRANDED IN ANOTHER STATE WITH MY LITTLE GIRL IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE WITH NO CELL SERVICE. NEEDED TOWED AGAIN. THE ANTI-FREEZE HOSE HAD COME LOOSE FROM ENGINE, CAUSED IT TO SHUT DOWN...HAD TO FIX, NO WARRANTY,CAR HAD 52,000 MILES (2,000 OVER) LAST WEEK I WAS TAKING MY DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL AND SMELLED GASOLINE VERY STRONGLY, AFTER HAVING TO IDLE IN BEHIND THE BUSES IN FRONT OF HER SCHOOL. WITH CHILDREN WALKING BY, AND BLOCKED IN BY ANOTHER MOM, IT NEARLY EXPLODED! THE GAS GAUGE HAD WENT DOWN 1/2 TANK, IT STARTED TO SMOKE AND NEARLY GOT FIRE. THEY SAID I WAS VERY LUCKY TO HAVE NOT BEEN IN A FIRE WITH MY DAUGHTER. OVER 3/4 TANK OF GAS HAD LEAKED OUT UNDER THE HOOD OF THE SUV AND IF SOMETHING WOULD HAVE SPARKED IT, MY DAUGHTER & I WOULD NOT BE HERE, AND MAYBE NOT THE CHILDREN IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL STANDING BY BUSES OR ON BUS NEXT TO SUV. THEY ALSO FOUND OIL PLUG WAS LEAKING AFTER LAND ROVER DEALER CHANGED OIL AT $80 AND NEVER PUT SEAL BACK ON PLUG. ALMOST BURNT ENGINE UP AGAIN. RIGHT NOW IT IS SITTING AT REPAIR SHOP, LAND ROVER ACCIDENTALLY SENT THEM A WHEEL BEARING LAST WEEK INSTEAD OF THE PART TO FIX GAS LEAK, I HAVE A RENTAL CAR FOR OVER 1 WEEK NOW. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH THE COST WILL BE TO GET IT FIXED THIS TIME, I'M PRETTY MUCH SCREWED. *NM
