I PURCHASED A NEW 2002 FREELANDER FROM LAND ROVER FORT WORTH (TX) IN JANUARY OF 2002. WHILE UNDER WARRANTY THE CAR HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS. MY WARRANTY EXPIRED IN FEBRUARY OF 2006 (4 YEARS), BUT DUE TO MY LOW MILEAGE 32,000 MILES, I DID NOT PURCHASE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. SINCE FEBRUARY 2006, I HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKES FOR THE 3RD TIME ($1000), HAD THE ENGINE OVERHEAT DUE TO A FAULTY TEMP GAUGE WHICH IN TURN BLEW THE INTAKE GASKET ($1500), REPLACED THE HEATER CORE AGAIN (PD. FOR BY DEALERSHIP), AND AM NOW FACED WITH REPLACING THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION ($5000). MY TRANSMISSION TROUBLE BEGAN IN EARLY AUGUST 2006, WHEN THE CAR BEGAN TO JERK AND SHUDDER UNEXPECTEDLY. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECK OUT THE ISSUE. THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION TEMP SENSOR AND SAID THE CARE WAS FIXED. I PICKED UP THE "FIXED" CAR AND 4 HOURS LATER THE DANGEROUS JUMPING/SHUDDERING HAPPENED AGAIN. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE PROBLEM GREW WORSE AND SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS LIT UP ON THE DASH. I PULLED OVER AND THE CAR WAS THEN FLATBEDDED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE NEXT DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT AN ELECTRONIC COMPUTER CHIP (ECC) FOR THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PART WAS ORDERED AND INSTALLED - BUT THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP NOW STATES THAT THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR $5000. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 37,000 MILES (HIGHWAY AND CITY MILES ONLY - NO OFF-ROADING) AND HAS BEEN SERVICED ON TIME AND ONLY AT LR DEALERSHIPS FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. I FIND THIS ENTIRE SITUATION UNACCEPTABLE. *JB
2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. TRANSMISSION FAILED AT 45,000 MILES. CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE AT 55,000 MILES. VEHICLES STOPPED DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. MECHANICS AT THE LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP SAID THAT 100% OF THE FREELANDER MODEL HAD THE SAME TRANSMISSION & ENGINE FAILURES. *TR
MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER HAS EXPERIENCED SLUGGISH ACCELERATION TO A JOLT AND DOWSHIFTS ON ITS OWN AT FREEWAY SPEED. ABOUT 2 WEEKS AFTER BUYING IT USED I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THEY SAID I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION, HAD IT TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT DIDN'T. NEEDLESS TO SAY THEY WOULDN'T REPLACE IT. IT HAS A OVERHEATING PROBLEM WHICH IS CONTINUOUS. THE ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE IT HAS NO OIL IN IT, EVEN AFTER AN OIL CHANGE I HAVE TO CHECK IT TO MAKE SURE BECAUSE THE NOISE IS SO LOUD. THE HDC LIGHT COMES ON AND THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO DRIVE IN AN ALMOST 4WHEEL LOW AT ALL TIMES. THERE WAS ANTIFREEZE IN MY OIL. THIS VEHICLE HAS MAJOR PROBLEMS!!!!!!!! *TR
I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE USED (LANDROVER FREELANDER) JUST OVER A YEAR AGO IN EARLY 2007. AT THE TIME IT HAD JUST UNDER 40,000 MILES ON IT AND WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF HAVING IT THE SUNROOF MALFUNCTIONED AND BROKE. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY REFERRED ME TO MY EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT I HAD PURCHASED. AFTER GOING ROUND AND ROUND WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND THE FOLKS AT THE LR DEALERSHIP WE GOT IT RESOLVED TO THE TUNE OF $1,200.00. SINCE THEN THE VEHICLE HAS HAD NUMEROUS VISITS TO THE LR DEALERSHIP TO BE REPAIRED (FUEL PUMP, FRONT END, TRANSMISSION, ETC...). AT THIS POINT I AM CONSIDERING DRIVING THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT CAN RUN NO MORE AND THEN JUST LETTING THE BANK TAKE IT BACK. I HAVE NO CHOICE BECAUSE HE LR DEALERSHIP BASICALLY SAID THE VEHICLE IS JUNK, EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS GREAT AND IS IN GREAT CONDITION FOR A 2002. WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE SALE OF THESE FREELANDERS IS NOTHING LESS THAN FRAUD BY LANDROVER AND THE CAR DEALERSHIPS THAT CHOOSE TO SELL THESE MODELS USED. EVEN IF YOU BUY A EXTENDED WARRANTY AS I DID, NO ONE TOLD ME I SHOULD HAVE HAD IT AT THE DEALERSHIP EVERY DAY AND PUSHING THE LR DEALERSHIP TO GO THROUGH THE CAR WITH A FINE TOOTH COMB TO MAKE SURE EVERY ITEM IS IN WORKING ORDER, BEFORE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY RUNS OUT. I BELIEVE THAT LAND ROVER KNOWS THAT THE FREELANDER HAS SERIOUS ISSUES & AT THIS POINT THEY ARE MERELY USING IT AS A MEANS TO DRIVE REVENUE SALES AT THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENTS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. PLEASE HELP, THIS PROBLEM HAS REACHED EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS. WILL IT TAKE A DEATH(S) DUE TO A MALFUNCTIONING PART(S) ON THESE VEHICLES BEFORE SOMEONE TAKES LAND ROVER TO TASK ON THIS LEMON OF A VEHICLE. I HAVE THREE SMALL CHILDREN AND I AM SCARED TO DEATH FOR THEM TO RIDE WITH ME IN THIS VEHICLE, BUT IT IS OUR ONLY VEHICLE AND WE HAVE NO CHOICE. PLEASE SOMEONE HOLD LAND ROVER ACCOUNTABLE FOR DUPING THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE ADJUSTABLE RATE MORTGAGE SCAM THAT HAS PUT A STRANGLE HOLD ON CUSTOMERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. *TR
THIS IS ABOUT TRANSMISSION FAILURE FOR 2002 LANDROVER/FREELANDER. KEEPING THE CAR IN BEST SHAPE AND MAINTAINING ON SCHEDULE, STILL THE TRANSMISSION WENT BAD WITH LESS THAN 40,000 MILEAGE. CAR WARRANTY IS FOR 50K OR 4 YEARS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE WARRANTY WAS UP IN JANUARY 2006. ENGINE HAS SPECIAL NOISE AND CAR IS COMING APART. WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP AND DOWN, REAR SEAT GOT STUCK AND WOULDN'T GET ITS POSITION. ONE PROBLEM AFTER ANOTHER, BUT THE MAIN ONE IS THE TRANSMISSION. *JB
THE 2002 LAND ROVERS FREELANDERS HAVE OVERHEATING PROBLEMS AND CAUSES THE ENGINE TO LOCK AND CAUSE ACCIDENTS ON THE ROAD. ALL FREELANDER BECOME LEMON..THE FAILURES HAPPEN WHEN THE CAR TURNS 5OK MILES. I FOUND OUT THAT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT THE SAME CAR HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM . AND DEALER WON'T EVEN SUPPLY THE PARTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE FREELANDERS WERE RIP OFF AND LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP STOP MAKING AFTER THEY FOUND OUT THAT THE CAR WAS A TOTAL DISASTER BOTH FOR THE COMPANY AND THEY CUSTOMERS. BUT STILL NO RECALLS ORDERED OR SERVICE CAMPAIGN IS ORDERED TO SAVE THE PEOPLE WHO PAID TOP DOLLAR FOR A LEMON. *TR
BRAKE LIGHTS DO NOT ILLUMINATE. CHECKED FUSE, BULBS AND WIRING. ALL WERE OPERATIVE. HAD BRAKE LAMP SWITCH REPLACED. LIGHTS STILL NOT OPERATIONAL. (NEW STOP LAMP SWITCH WAS THE SAME MANUFACTURER AS THE ONE THAT IS CURRENTLY UNDER NHTSA INVESTIGATION.) SINCE NEW PART DIDN'T WORK, OLD PART WAS REINSTALLED AND NEW ONE RETURNED TO DEALER. THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE 300.00 JUST TO TELL ME WHY BRAKES WON'T WORK AND IS AWARE OF WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN TRIED. BRAKE LIGHTS STILL NOT OPERATIONAL. *JB
ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, ONE DAYS AFTER MY CAR WAS CLEARED FOR A SECOND TIME BY A LAND ROVER DEALER. MY CAR WENT INTO 'LIMITED PERFOMANCE MODE' WHILE I WAS COMMUTING TO WORK....I WAS IN THE HIGH SPEED LANE AND THE MIDDLE LANE AND MY CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE ABOUT 20 MPH. I HAD TO CALL 911 ON THE SECOND OCCASION AS IT HAPPENED BECAUSE I WAS IN THE MERGE OF 2 HIGHWAYS IN THE EVENING. MY CAR ALSO HAD DOWNSHIFTING PROBLEMS WHERE THE DOWNHILL DECENT CONTROL WOULD COME ON OUT OF NOWHERE CAUSING MY CAR TO BUCK FORWARD AND DROP DOWN TO SECOND GEAR. THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN SAID THAT IS COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED 3 TIMES BEFORE THEY FINALLY FOUND SOMETHING AND THEN IT KEPT HAPPENING ANYWAY. MY TRANSMISSION LET GO ON THE HIGHWAY AT JUST OVER 60K MILES AND THEN MY ENGINE LINING SHIFTED SPEWING OIL ONLY ABOUT 2 MONTHS AFTER. THE DEALERSHIPS ARE WELL AWARE OF THE POOR QUALITY OF THESE VEHICLES AND YET, THEY SELL AND RE-SELL THEM TO THE UNSUSPECTING CONSUMERS. I HAVE A LAWYER AND WILL BE SUING LR FOR EVERYTHING I CAN, INCLUDING LOST WAGES, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL DISTRESS, AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT CAN BE TIED INTO MY TWO YEAR NIGHTMARE. I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GET THESE VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. THANK YOU *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE'S BRAKES OVERHEATED. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES TO MAKE THE DRIVER AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE PRESSED AT NORMAL SPEEDS, THERE WAS A SLIGHT CHIRPING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER BUT THE DEALER COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH THE VEHICLE SHIFTED FROM FIFTH GEAR TO NEUTRAL WITHOUT WARNING AND THE REVERSE FAILED WHEN ATTEMPTING TO PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. THEY REPLACED THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.
OUR 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER BEGAN TO OVER HEAT AT 63,216 MILES. WE WERE LUCKY IN THAT WE WERE AT A DRIVE THROUGH NEAR OUR HOUSE. WE TOOK THE CAR HOME RIGHT AWAY. UPON GETTING AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER, THE CAR WAS TAKEN IN FOR INSPECTION. THE LONG BLOCK NEEDED REPLACING. THIS WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT A CYLINDER SLEEVE HAD SLIPPED. WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE ENGINE REPLACED. UPON FURTHER DISCUSSION WITH THE DEALER, IT SEEMS TO BE KNOWN THAT THE ENGINE WILL FAIL. THIS DEALER HAS HAD OWNERS COME IN FOR THEIR 3RD MOTOR ALL WITHIN THE WARRANTY. THE LIFE EXPECTANCY SEEMS TO BE BETWEEN 30,000 AND ABOUT 65,000 MILES. WE ARE LUCKY THAT WE WERE NOT ANYWHERE FAR AWAY OR MY WIFE WAS ON BUSINESS. THIS SEEMS TO BE A BAD DESIGN AND RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS LIKE LAND ROVER WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. THOSE WHOM ARE OUT OF WARRANTY ARE OUT OF LUCK. *JB
I PURCHASED A NEW 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER FROM LAND ROVER NEW ORLEANS (PARETTI) ON AUGUST 19, 2002. SINCE THAT TIME, THE VEHICLE HAS HAD CONTINUOUS PROBLEMS. THE POWER STEERING, TRANSMISSION, TRANSFER CASE (2), IRD UNIT (2), FRONT DRIVE SHAFT, MANIFOLD CHAMBER AND OTHER ITEMS HAVE BEEN REPLACED AND THE BRAKE PADS (2) HAVE HAD TO BE CHANGED. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 35,498 MILES. AFTER REVIEWING EDMUNDS.COM AND OTHER CONSUMER RESOURCE SITES, IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEMS THAT I ENCOUNTERED HAVE ALSO BEEN ENCOUNTERED BY OTHERS PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD 23 WARRANTY CLAIMS ON THIS VEHICLE AND LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, INC., AS OF JANUARY 2005, HAS PAID IN EXCESS OF $11,994.55 FOR REPAIRS ON A VEHICLE THAT HAD A PURCHASE PRICE OF $30,603.77. THE AFOREMENTIONED AMOUNT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE COSTS OF REPLACING THE TRANSFER CASE, IRD UNIT, FRONT DRIVE SHAFT AND MANIFOLD CHAMBER IN APRIL 2005 OR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SUN ROOF ASSEMBLY IN JUNE 2005. NEITHER THE LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER NOR LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, INC. HAVE BEEN COOPERATIVE IN DEALING WITH ME ON THIS ISSUE. *JB
ENGINE FAILURE-CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED & SLOW ACCELERATION, UPPER INTAKE OF ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 51,000 MILES, DEALER NOT WILLING TO COVER DUE TO REGULAR VEHICLE MAINTENANCE NOT DONE AT DEALERSHIP, THIS IS A VIOLATION OF THE MAGNUSON-MOSS ACT. *AK
I BOUGHT A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER AS A 2ND OWNER OF THE VEHICLE FROM A LOCAL CAR DEALERSHIP. SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE, I REPLACED A SUNROOF, A TRANSMISSION, THE BRAKES REQUIRE CONSTANT REPLACEMENT (MORE OFTEN THAN SHOULD BE NECESSARY), A PASSENGER DOOR WINDOW MOTOR AND THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE AND NOW HAS BLOWN AGAIN - I AM UNABLE TO HAVE THIS ENGINE REPLACED #1 THERE ARE NO MORE ENGINES AS THE LANDROVER DEALER ONLY MADE THIS DEFECTIVE MODEL 1 YEAR AND THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY ENGINES REPLACED BY OTHER OWNERS THAT THERE ARE NO OTHER ENGINES AVAILABLE. EVEN IF THERE WERE ANY ENGINES I WOULD NOT PAY $10,000 TO HAVE ANOTHER "DEFECTIVE" ENGINE PLACED IN THIS VEHICLE. THERE ARE OVER 1400 MESSAGES ON THE EDMOND FORUM.COM OUTLINING OTHER PEOPLES SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. THIS DEFECTIVE VEHICLE HAS CAUSED COUNTLESS PEOPLE'S CREDIT TO BE RUINED, AND FINANCIAL HARDSHIP TO UNTOLD FAMILIES. I WONDER WHY NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ALREADY WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED. LANDROVER NEEDS TO REIMBURSE THESE OWNERS THE MONEY THEY HAVE SPENT - SUCH AS MYSELF ON REPAIRS, CONSTANTLY IN THE SHOP AND HAVING TO PAY FOR RENTAL VEHICLES. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS RUDE AND HAD ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPATHY AND ACTUALLY TOLD ME AFTER BRINGING MY VEHICLE IN TO THEM OVER AND OVER THAT "HE WILL BE GLAD WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I GET OUT FROM UNDER THIS VEHICLE" AND ADMITTED THAT THIS VEHICLE HAD BEEN A PROBLEM FOR THEM. BUT... THE DEALER WOULDN'T EVEN OFFER US A FREE OIL CHANGE FOR ALL OF OUR HARDSHIPS. IT IS A SHAME. I HOPE EVENTUALLY SOMETHING IS DONE BEFORE THIS COMPANY "BELLIES UP" AND FILES BANKRUPTCY AND ALL OF THESE FAMILIES THAT HAVE BEEN RUINED WILL HAVE NO RECOURSE FOR THEIR FINANCIAL WOES AS A RESULT OF THIS HORRIBLE SITUATION. MY LAND ROVER FREELANDER HAS HAD 2 ENGINE FAILURES UNDER 50K MI., THE FIRST AT 26K AND THE SECOND 24K LATER. 2 SUNROOF REPLACEMENTS, 2 SIDE WINDOW REPAIRS, 1 OVERHEATING INCIDENT, AND THE CAR JUST RUNS HOT ALL THE TIME, WITH HOT COOLANT SMELL. *NM
ENGINE TEMPERATURE SPIKING. ENGINE SUCKED A LAVE INTO THE ENGINE - ENGINE SEIZED. HAD TO REBUILD ENGINE - $5500.00. *NM
POWER SUN ROOF MOTOR FAILED FOR THE SECOND TIME WITHIN 2 YEARS. SERVICE GUY AT DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THEY ARE REPLACING THESE MOTORS EVERY YEAR OR SO. MY WARRANTY RUNS OUT IN LESS THAN 6,000 MILES. SHOULDN'T THIS BE COVERED EVEN AFTER WARRANTY IS UP. I THOUGHT MAYBE THERE MIGHT A RECALL, IF THIS IS HAPPENING SO OFTEN. *JB
MAY 26, 2005 WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET IN ORLANDO FLORIDA, THE STEERING ON MY 2002 FREELANDER S FAILED. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER IN ORLANDO. ON MAY 27, 2005 I WAS INFORMED BY THE CHIEF LANDROVER TECHNICIAN THAT THE BOLTS HOLDING THE STEERING COLUMN ON THE LEFT SIDE HAD SHEERED OFF. IN LATER DISCUSSION I WAS INFORMED THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE. ON JUNE 7 I WAS INFORMED BY THE SENIOR TECHNICIAN THAT HE COULD NOT SAFELY REPAIR THE VEHICLE. ON JUNE 9 I WAS INFORMED BY THE SUPERVISOR AT CUSTOMER SERVICE LAND ROVER AMERICA THAT A REGIONAL TECHINICAL DIRECTOR WOULD HAVE TO DETERMINE IF IT COULD BE REPAIRED. I HAD NO CONTROL ON THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I HAD BEEN ON THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE LESS THAN THREE HOURS PRIOR TO THAT IN A RAIN STORM AVOIDING SEMI TRACTOR TRAILERS. HAD THIS OCCURED AT THAT TIME I WOULD NOT BE FILING THIS REPORT.
THE REMOTE CONTROL COMPLETELY STOP OPENING THE DRIVERS DOOR. LANDROVER WAS NOT RECEPTIVE TO MY COMPLAINTS. THE REGIONAL GUYS STILL HAVE NOT RETURN MY CALL ABOUT THE MATTER. *NM
DRY ROT IN MICHELIN SYNCHRONE TIRES: AT 23926 MILES THE DEALER'S SERVICE ADVISOR EXPRESSED CONCERN ABOUT DRY ROT IN TIRES THAT WERE DATE-STAMPED AS MADE IN JAN & FEB 2002. BOTH THE DEALER, LAND ROVER INC. (THE CAR IS A 2002 FREELANDER SE WITH 225/55R17 TIRES) AND A LOCAL RETAILER, DISCOUNT TIRE CO., ADVISED REPLACEMENT OF ALL FOUR TIRES. A 'DRY ROT' RATING TEST IS NEEDED FOR CONSUMER SAFTEY!
I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO LANDROVER WHEN I NOTICED A LOSS OF POWER IN ENGINE & TAPPING NOISE WHILE IT WAS IN WARRANTY. A FEW TIMES LANDROVER CLASSIFIED MY PROBLEM AS THE THROTTLE, WHICH HAPPENED TO BE A RECALL ITEM. ONCE THEY DID THE "RECALL" REPAIR ON THE THROTTLE IN 4/05, I TOOK IT BACK A FEW DAYS LATER BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CHANGE AFTER THE INITIAL "RECALL REPAIR". THAN I WAS TOLD IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG ALL FREELANDERS. NOW THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, I LEARNED ABOUT A TSB THAT CAME OUT A YEAR AFTER I REPORTED MY PROBLEM FOR MY IDENTICAL PROBLEM THAT EXISTED THAN AND NOW THAT LANDROVER TECH'S MISDIAGNOSED, MISTAKEN OR IGNORED FOR SOMETHING ELSE. THEY ARE CLEVER ENOUGH NOT TO INCLUDE WHAT THE CUSTOMER COMPLAINT IS ON THE REPAIR TICKET & ONLY INCLUDE WHAT THEY DID. THE LOSS OF POWER IS UNPREDICTABLE AND IS A HAZARD THAT LANDROVER IS FULLY AWARE OF PER THE TSB LISTED BELOW. THE PLUG BLOWS OUT AND OIL POURS ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST SYSTEM. DEALER CLAIMS THEY HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE, AND THAT A COLD CLIMATE KIT THAT IS USED IN CANADA RESOLVES THE ISSUE. BUT LAND ROVER WILL NOT PAY FOR THE MODIFICATION WHICH COST ME $296! THIS COULD HAVE EASILY CAUSED A FIRE OF AN ACCIDENT.*AK
THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP ON FEBRUARY 5TH FROM THE DEALERSHIP, AFTER EBING THERE FOR THREE WEEKS FOR A NO START ISSUE WHERE IT FAILED ON THE WAY HOME. WE COMPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THIS TIME THE IGNITION KEY CYLINDER WAS REPLACED.

THE CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING 20 MILES PER HOUR WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION AND AFTER 3 TIMES OF TESTING, RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *JB
JANUARY 15TH, 2005 MY WIFE LEFT WORK AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE WAS ~ 20 F. ALL OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS WERE WORKING, BUT THE STARTER SELENOID WOULD NOT ENGAGE. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO JUMP START THE VEHICLE AND AN ATTEMPT TO RESET THE SECURITY YEILDED NOTHING. THE DIAGNOSED NO FAULT AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR 3 WEEKS.
VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED WITH 40,000 MILES ON IT FROM A DEALERSHIP IN DECEMBER OF 2004. DAY AFTER VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED REAR WINDOW MOTOR BROKE. DEALERSHIP REPLACED. TWO WEEKS LATER CAR BEGAN TO LOSE POWER, DEALERSHIP REPLACED SENSOR. LOSS OF POWER AGAIN DEALERSHIP ENDING UP PERFORMING ENGINE WORK. VEHICLE CONTINUALLY DISPLACED HILL DECENT / TRACK CONTROL LIGHT. DEALERSHIP REPLACED. AT 65000 MILES KEYLESS ENTRY STOPPED UNLOCKING ALL DOORS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. DOORS CAN NO LONGER BE UNLOCKED FROM THE INSIDE AS WELL. REAR PASSENGER WINDOW ON DRIVER'S SIDE DOES NOT GO DOWN. LOSS OF POWER ISSUE IS HAPPENING AGAIN NOW AT 75,000 MILES. *TR
AT 40000 MILES THE VEHICLE STARTED TO BECOME UNSTABLE BECAUSE OF A "WOBBLE" ON THE FRONT WHEELS. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE DRIVETRAIN BEARINGS WERE BAD. MY WIFE HAD TROUBLE CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE AND I IMMEDIATLY HAD IT IN FOR SERVICE. *AK
MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER LEFT MY FAMILY AND I STRANDED ON THE HIGHWAY TWICE AND BOTH EVENTS WERE VERY COSTLY. I OWN THE VEHICLE 16 MONTHS. THE FIRST BREAK DOWN OCCURRED IN HARTFORD, AL WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE NEAREST DEALER JAX, FL 300 PLUS MILES. A BATTERY CABLE WAS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE REACHED 48,000 MILES WHEN I MADE A FORMAL COMPLAINT OF ENGINE NOISE AND REQUESTED THE DEALERSHIP (MANTHENY JAGUAR AND LAND ROVER) PERFORM THE APPROPRIATE SERVICES TO INCLUDE NOTING ANY PROBLEMS CONSIDERING THE WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 50000 MIL. AFTER 50000 THE VEHICLE LITERALLY BEGAN TO BREAK DOWN MECHANICALLY. ONE NOTED COST OF SEVERAL WAS THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $4800.00 TO REPAIR. I BELIEVE ANY VEHICLE THAT HAS A MAJOR BREAK DOWN OF THIS NATURE, THE AMERCIAN CONSUMERS HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW. THE FREE LANDER IS COSTLY AND PERFORMS POORLY STACKED UP AGAINST AMERICAN MADE PRODUCTS. *AK
I PURCHASED A 2002 FREELANDER S IN OCTOBER 2003. THE VEHICLE WAS A DEMO MODEL, WITH APPROXIMATELY 8,000 MILES. IN THE 10 MONTHS THAT I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE, I HAVE HAD TO HAVE BRAKE AND ROTOR WORK DONE, AND HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED. I HAVE COMPLAINED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASSIONS ABOUT THE VEHICLE LOSING POWER. I HAVE ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE HEADLINER REPLACED, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER SMALL PROBLEMS. THE MOST RECENT CONCERN FOR ME IS THE 3 TIMES IN 20 DAYS THAT THE VEHICLE HAS HAD TO BE TOWED INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THE FUEL PUMP WAS "REPAIRED" A FEW DAYS AGO, YET ONE DAY AFTER PICKING THE VEHICLE UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP, THE CAR BROKE DOWN AND HAD TO BE TOWED IN FOR REPAIRS. I AM NOW TOLD THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL GAUGE. THE HEADACHE OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE IS TOO MUCH. I'VE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS LIKE THIS WITH PREVIOUS VEHICLES. *AK
I OWN A 2002 FREELANDER WITH LESS THE 18,000 MILES. BRAKE PADS WENT FROM GOOD TO GRINDING METAL IN ONE DAY WITH NO SIGNS. I BOUGHT EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR $3,000. SINCE THE TRUCK HAS UNDER 50,000 MILES LAND ROVER WILL NOT COVER. WHAT KIND OF SERVICE IS THIS. ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE DID A GREAT JOB PICKING UP MY TRUCK BUT I WAS INFORMED THAT MY LOCAL LAND ROVER HAS NO CARS FOR LOANERS DUE TO ANOTHER FACILITY CLOSING IN EDEN PRAIRIE MINNESOTA. SO HERE I SIT WITH NO WHEELS. IF THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE REPAIRED UNDER ANY OF MY WARRANTIES YOU WILL SEE A LAWSUIT BROUGHT AGAINST LAND ROVER. NUMEROUS TIMES THE ENGINE OF MY FREELANDER LOSES COMPRESSION AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT TRAVEL AT A SPEED FASTER THAN 5 MPH. THE VEHICLE LURCHES AND WON'T MAINTAIN A PROPER SPEED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY AREN'T SURE WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT. APPROXIMATELY 8 MONTHS AGO THE REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. THE VEHICLE WORKED PROPERLY FOR 7 MONTHS. A MONTH AGO IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME I WAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY IN BETWEEN SEMI TRUCKS. THE VEHICLE LOST SPEED AND I COULD NOT TRACEL FASTER THAN 5 MPH. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I LET IT COLL DOWN FOR 20 MINUTES. WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE IT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. HOWEVER, THEY DID STATE, "WE HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS MODEL." I WAS TOLD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME AND BRING IT BACK IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN. ONE WEEK LATER, IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON THE HIGHWAY. AGAIN' I LET IT COOL DOWN, AND I WAS ABLE TO GET IT HOME. I MADE CONTACT WITH THE DEARLERSHIP AND LAND ROVER OF NORTH AMERICA, AND NOT ONCE HAVE THEY ASKED TO SEE THE VEHICLE, OFFER TO FIX IT, LOOK AT IT. ALL THE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO DO IS FOR ME TO TRADE UP TO A DISCOVERY. THE VEHICLE SITS IN MY DRIVEWAY BECAUSE IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AND LAND ROVER REFUSES TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK, OR EVEN OFFER TO FIX IT. *AK
I FINALLY GOT MY FREELANDER BACK FROM OVER 4 MONTHS OF WAITING. MY 2002 FREELANDER REQUIRED A NEW ENGINE AFTER IT WAS FOUND THAT MUD AND/OR DEBRIS HAD ENTERED MY TIMING BELT ENCLOSURE AND CAUSED MY ENGINE TO JUMP TIME AND CATOSTROPHICALLY DESTROY MY ENGINE VALVES AND CYLINDER WALLS. A SPECIFIC LAND ROVER DEALER NOTED THAT "MUD" WAS THE TOTAL CAUSE OF MY ENGINE FAILURE, WHEN IN FACT IT WAS A 1" X 1" HOLE IN THE TIMING BELT ENCLSOURE; THIS HOLE IS A DESIGN FLAW OR OVERSIGHT AND THUS ALLOWS ANY DIRT/GRIME/DEBRIS/MUD TO ENTER AND CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE. FREELANDER NEVER SHOWED VISIBLE SIGNS (METER OR STEAM) THAT IT WAS OVERHEATING. INSURANCE HAS COVERED THIS ISSUE UNDER A FLOOD COVERAGE AND HAS FRONTED OVER $12,800 FOR A NEW ENGINE. I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY LOSS-USE COVERAGE FOR THE 4 MONTHS. UPON INSPECTION OF MY NEW 2003 ENGINE, I FOUND A NEW PLASTIC PIECE THAT NOW COVERS THE ONCE 1" X 1" HOLE IN THE TIMING BELT ENCLOSURE. THIS PIECE ALSO HAS A PIECE NUMBER AND COSTS APPOXIMATELY $6.00. NOW YOU CAN SEE, A MERE $6 ITEM WOULD HAVE SAVED ME AND INSURANCE OVER $13,000. LAND ROVER HAS NOT INITIATED A RECALL OR SERVICE BULLETIN TO MY KNOWLEDGE; I SUSPECT THAT THIS WILL ONLY BE INSTALLED ON AN AS NEEDED BASIS FOR THOSE DRIVERS WHO DO USE THEIR FREELANDER AS ADVERTISED BY LAND ROVER. IN A RECENT ARTICLE IN LAND ROVER CHRONICLE, IT WAS STATED THAT THE 2006 FREELANDER WILL HAVE A BETTER SEALED ENGINE COMPARTMENT, DUE TO THE FACT THAT MOST DRIVERS ARE USING THEIR VEHICLES FOR OFF-ROAD USE (AS ADVERTISED); THEY ALSO STATE THAT THIS VEHICLE WASN'T DESIGNED TO MATCH THE DISCOVERY OR DEFENDER. ON TOP OF IT ALL, MY FRONT AXLE REQUIRED REPLACEMENT DUE TO A NEW ENGINE INSTALL (VIBRATION PROBLEMS), A NEW 02 SENSOR, PLUS I'VE NOTICED A SMALL HAND-SIZED DENT ON MY HOOD (FROM CLOSING). I STILL HAVE PROBLEMS OF SOME SORT SINCE MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT IT ON NOW.*AK
WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AT NORMAL CONDITIONS ABS LIGHT CAME ON INTERMITTENTLY, AND THERE WAS EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. DEALER STATED BRAKING SYSTEM WAS DEFECTIVE BUT THEY COULD DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. ALSO, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILED. *AK
ENGINE WILL STALL WHEN VEHICLE IS ON AN INCLINE, IN DIVE GEAR, AND ALLOWED TO ROLL BACK. ALSO, IF VEHICLE IS ALLOWED TO ROLLBACK AND BRAKES ARE APPLIED, VEHICLE WILL STALL. DEALER SAYS THAT THIS IS A "SAFETY FEATURE" AND THAT ALL SAME MODEL VEHICLES DOES THE SAME THING. IF THIS IS INDEED A "SAFETY FEATURE," THEN BRAKES SHOULD HAVE AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGED WHEN THE ENGINE STALLS. THIS IS NOT THE CASE, HOWEVER AS THE VEHICLE WILL CONTINUE TO ROLLBACK WITH THE STALLED ENGINE. *LA
WE OWN A 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER. IT HAS BEEN IN THE REPAIR SHOP NUMEROUS TIMES. WHILE ON A TRIP ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD LITE UP AND THE TRANSMISSION BECAME STUCK IN 4TH GEAR. BECAUSE ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE COULD NOT DIRECT US TO AN OPEN DEALERSHIP, WE HAD TO DRIVE FROM BUFFALO NY TO CHICAGO IL. ONCE BACK IN THE CITY, THE DEALERSHIP TOOK THE CAR AND REPLACED THE COMPUTER, WHICH TOOK MORE THAN TWO WEEKS. ON THE WAY HOME, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. WE BROUGHT THE CAR BACK AND THE DEALERSHIP HAS HAD THE VEHICLE FOR THE PAST 26 DAYS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. WE WENT IN TO TRY AND TRADE IT IN FOR A DISCOVERY AND THEY ONLY OFFERED 14,000. WE HAVE TRIED TO GET CORPORATE TO BUY BACK THE CAR AT OUR PAY OFF AMOUNT AND THEY HAVE REFUSED. WE ARE CURRENTLY EXPLORING OUR OPTIONS UNDER THE UCC AND THE MAGNUSON-MOSS ACT FOR BREACH OF WARRANTY.*AK

SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR OVER 30 DAYS FOR REPAIR WORK TO THE STEREO, SUNROOF, THROTTLE ASSEMBY, TRANCTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT, PASSENGER WINDOW BREAKING, ETC. HOWEVER, I WAS MOST DISTURBED TO LEARN THAT LANDROVER IS "FINDING" OUT, AS QUOTED BY TWO DEALERSHIPS, THAT THE BREAKS NEED TO BE REPLACED EVERY 12000 MILES BECASUE THE VEHICLE IS TOO HEAVY FOR THE PADS USED DURING MANUFACTURING. LANDROVER NORTH AMERICA HAS PROVIDED NO RELIEF IN THIS MATTER AND MAINTAINS THAT IT IS MY PERSONAL DRIVING HABITS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE AND THIS IS A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ITEM. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL OTHER SUVS AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE BREAKS EVEN UP TO 70,000 MILES DRIVING ON MOUTAIN ROADS. I BELIEVE LANDROVER NA HAS A PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITY TO DISCLOSE THE ADDITIONAL COST OF $300 THAT EACH CUSTOMER HAS TO PAY EVERY 12K MILES FOR BREAK IN ADDITION TO THE $350 THEY HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR SCHEDULED SERVICE EVERY 12K MILES. I DOUBT THEY WOULD SELL ANOTHER VEHICLE. EVEN THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT SERVICES MY CAR ADMITTED HE WOULDN'T BY ONE EITHER.

DEALER STATED THAT LAND ROVER NEEDS THEIR ROTORS REPLACE EVERY 10-15K. I CONSIDER THIS EXCESSIVE WEAR AND TEAR. DEALER WILL NOT COVER UNDER WARRANTY. ADDITIONALLY, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 8 TIMES FOR WARRANTY REPAIRS; AND BRAKES. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP WHERE IT WAS BEEN FOR THE LAST 11 DAYS WITH THE DEALER ONCE AGAIN TRYING TO RESOLVE WARNING LIGHT AND TRANSMISSION ISSUE. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE SHIFTING TO LOWER GEARS BY ITSELF AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. IN ADDITION ALL OF THE ON-BOARD FAILURE LIGHTS COMING ON AND STAY ON ROUTINELY. THE CAR CONTINUES TO BE PLAGUED BY ELECTRICAL/MECHANICAL PROBLEMS. AFTER EVERY VISIT THE DEALER I AM ASSURED THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED BY BOTH THE DEALER AND LAND ROVER CUSTOMER SERVICE; ONLY TO FIND MYSELF BRINGING THE VEHICLE BACK LITERALLY DAYS LATER WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. WITHIN 8 MONTHS OF PURCHASING THE NEW VEHICLE, IT REQUIRED THREE SEPARATE VISITS TO THE DEALER FOR A TOTAL OF 15 MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS, BUT THE PURCHASING DEALER COULD NOT FIX ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS. IN JUNE 2002, I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER WITH IDENTICAL MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS. THOUGH THE CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE HARD SHIFTING AND FAILURE LIGHTS. IN OCTOBER 2003, I STARTED CARING A DIGITAL CAMERA IN THE VEHICLE SO THAT I COULD DOCUMENT THE PROBLEMS. *LA
I STRONGLY URGE THE MODIFICATION OF THE BRAKE LIGHT AND TURN SIGNAL CONFIGURATION ON CURRENT FREELANDERS IN THE UNITED STATES. THE PLACEMENT OF THESE CRUCIAL SIGNALS IS LOCATED IN AN UNEXPECTED AND LESS VISIBLE LOCATION TO OTHER DRIVERS . I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A REAR-END COLLISION (AND HAVE HAD MANY CLOSE CALLS) ON THE HIGHWAY LIKELY BECAUSE THE DRIVERS BEHIND ME DO NOT NOTICE MY BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATING. THE BRAKE LIGHTS COULD EASILY BE MOVED TO THE CURRENT FOG LIGHT LOCATION AND THE TURN SIGNALS COULD BE MOVED TO WHERE THE REVERSE LIGHTS ARE NOW LOCATED - THIS WOULD PROVIDE A COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO THIS SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. *TT
HEATER DOESN'T PROVIDE POWERFUL HEAT AND RIGHT FOOT GETS SO HOT AND LEFT FOOT FREEZES WHILE DRIVING. CAR SHAKES AND RUMBLES OFTEN, SOUNDING LIKE THERE IS NO OIL. HAD SEVERE WATER LEAK FROM MISSING SEALS AROUND REAR CARGO DOOR. SEALS, HEADLINER AND RUG HAD TO BE REPLACED. GAS CAP CAN ONLY BE REMOVED WITH KEY IN IT. IF KEY IS REMOVED WHILE GAS CAP IS OFF, MAKES FOR EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TIME TO REPLACE (ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES TO WORK THE KEY BACK IN). DASHBOARD LIGHTS COME ON FREQUENTLY TO WARN OF A FAILURE WHEN THERE IS NO SUCH FAILURE. ENGINE DOESN'T START ON FIRST TRY A LOT OF TIMES. ONCE DRIVING FOR A WHILE THEN PARKING FOR, CAR SOMETIMES DOESN'T START ON FIRST TRY. SHIFTING IS DIFFICULT, RPMS REV PRETTY HIGH. CAR HAS LURCHED FORWARD WHEN SPEED DECREASES (I.E. GOING DOWN HILL). *CB
MANY PROBLEMS. 1ST. THERMOSTAT FAILURE BEFORE 200 MILE MARK. REPLACED. COOLANT LEAKS. HEATER REPLACED, LEAKING COOLANT. ENGINE SOUND LIKE A DIESEL TRUCK, NEVER TOLD WHAT IT WAS. SUNROOF BROKE 3 TIMES. TRANSMISSION REPLACED TWICE. STEERING COLUMN WAS NOT BOLTED CORRECTLY, STEERING WHEEL ALWAYS OFF CENTER. COOLANT STILL LEAKS... *TR
I FEEL THE DESIGN OF THE TAIL LIGHTS HAS CAUSED MANY CLOSE-CALL NEAR ACCIDENTS WITH MY FREELANDER. THE DESIGN IS COUNTER-INTUITIVE FOR THE DRIVERS BEHIND ME, WHO EXPECT THE LIGHT ASSEMBLIES ON THE CORNERS OF THE VEHICLE TO ILLUMINATE WHEN BRAKING. THE BRAKE LAMPS ARE IN THE BUMPER, HOWEVER- WHICH DOESN'T SEEM INTUITIVE OR SOMETIMES AREN'T VISIBLE TO A CLOSE-FOLLOWING VEHICLE. WHEN NOT ILLUMINATED, IT'S DIFFICULT TO EVEN SEE THE BUMPER LAMP ASSEMBLIES EXIST, YET THE CORNER MOUNTED ASSEMBLIES ARE AT EYE LEVEL- BUT THEY HAVE NO BLINKERS OR BRAKE LAMPS. SOME PEOPLE HAVE STARTED MODIFYING THEIR OWN BRAKE LAMPS IN RESPONSE TO THIS ISSUE! I'D RATHER HAVE THEM CHANGED LEGALLY THAN MODIFY MY VEHICLE WITHOUT DOT/NHTSA APPROVAL.
WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE. THEN, THE VEHICLE VIBRATED UNCONTROLLABLY. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND PULLED OVER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, WHO DETERMINED THE BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACED THEM. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK THE CONSUMER STATED THE COOLANT SYSTEM FAILED AND THE VEHICLE HAD ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. *JB
