REAR DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEMS. TODAY AUGUST 8, 2020 I HAD TO PUT MY VEHICLE BACK IN THE SHOP AND IT'S THE SAME ISSUE THAT I HAD A YEAR AGO. I HAD THE SAME WHIRRING NOISE AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL GOING OUT. GOT IT REPLACED ON MARCH 31, 2019. FAST FORWARD TO TODAY SAME NOISE SAME ISSUE. THIS HAS GOT TO BE A RECALL ISSUE. TOO TOO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE. THIS IS NOT A REASONABLE FIX AND TO HAVE TO GET THE SAME THING REPLACED AGAIN WITHIN A YEAR, UNACCEPTABLE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE.
PREMATURE FAILURE OF BEARINGS, RACES AND GEARS IN REAR DIFFERENTIAL.
REAR END OF LR2 STARTED TO HUM AT 62,522 MILES. BROUGHT IT TO LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND THE COST OF REPLACEMENT WOULD BE $3000.00 DOLLARS. NO VEHICLE SHOULD BE THIS COSTLY AT SO LOW MILEAGE AND AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM THAT LAND ROVER WILL NOT FIX. DEFINETLY RECALL WORTHY AS THIS IS NOT SAFE AND COULD BE A ROAD HAZARD. NOISE HAS LOUDEND AFTER A WEEK.
REAR DIFFERENTIAL IS SHOT UNDER 75,000 MILES
MY 2009 LR2 VIN: (XXXXX) HAD 70K WHEN PURCHASED LAST YEAR. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL BEARING HAS DEGRADED/FAILED AND IT MAKING THIS LOUD WHINE OR HUMMING NOISE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS VOLUNTARY RECALL BULLETINS #407296 IS FOR 2010 AND WAS DATED 8/3/15. NO MENTION OF LR2'S 2009 AND OLDER. IT IS THE SAME ISSUE. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND LAND ROVER SHOULD FIX IT. THERE ARE THOUSANDS IN NEED OF REPAIR AND SOME HAVE HAD THEIRS REPAIRED MULTIPLE TIMES. PLEASE HELP US. WORN BEARINGS IN REAR DIFFERENTIAL AT 65K MILES. BEGAN TO MAKE A HUMMING SOUND WHICH BECAME PROGRESSIVELY LOUDER AS IT WORE. THE SOUND WAS THE LOUDEST BETWEEN 30-55 MPH. THE DIFFERENTIAL HAD TO BE REPLACED.
CONTINUING TO HAVE ENDLESS PROBLEMS OF THE BATTERY DRAINING FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. WHEN THE BATTERY DRAINS TOO LOW THE VEHICLE THEN GOES INTO "CRASH MODE" AND I HAVE TO HAVE IT TOWED AND THE COMPUTER FLASHED TO HAVE THE CODES RESET OR ELSE IT'S NOT DRIVABLE. IT'S HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE.
SECOND REAR DIFFERENTIAL NEEDING TO BE REPLACED AFTER <24K MILES. THE FIRST WAS REPLACED AFTER 68K MILES. THERE IS A LOUD GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE TRUCK. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED WHAT I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS. LAND ROVER WILL NOT STAND BEHIND THE PART, TELLS ME THAT IT IS OVER THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY PERIOD. TOO MUCH OF THIS PART GOING BAD AND AN EXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT.
REAR DIFFERENTIAL, EXCESSIVE NOISE RESULTING FROM DESIGN FLAW WELL DOCUMENTED BY LAND ROVER. COST OF REPAIR UNREASONABLY HIGH AND IS A SOURCE OF FINANCIAL ABUSE BY REPAIR FACILITIES. ACTUAL COST IS APPROXIMATELY $200 IN PARTS AND 5 HOURS LABOR. REPAIR FACILITIES QUOTES RANGE FROM $2,800 - $9,300 BY IGNORING ANY ALTERNATIVE TO A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT.
I HAVE 2009 LR2 WITH 93K MILES ON IT. I GOT 130 MULTI POINT INSPECTION BY THE HONDA DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR FOR THE HUMMING NOISE COMING FROM THE BACK. THEY GAVE ME CLEAN SHEET WITH JUST 1 TIRE REPLACEMENT NEEDED. 1 WEEK LATER I GOT THE CAR CHECKED BY THE LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD ITS MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL WHICH WILL COST NORTH OF $3K. I RESEARCHED AND COME TO KNOW THAT THERE MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH THIS LARGE COST PROBLEM WITH LAND ROVER... WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN A PART OF RECALL??? I DON'T HAVE $3K+ SITTING AROUND TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. PLEASE ASSIST. THANK YOU *TR
NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD STARTED TO MAKE HUMMING NOISE AND IT SEEMS THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. LAND ROVER SHOP CHECKED AND SAID THE NOISE IS COMING FROM THE TIRES. REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES ($1000) AND STILL THE NOISE REMAINED. GOT IT CHECKED FROM TWO OTHER LAND ROVER SHOPS AND BOTH REACHED THE SAME CONCLUSION - READ DIFFERENTIAL / BEARING FAILURE!! MY LR2 HAS NEVER GONE OFF-ROAD AND THE REAR SEATS HAVE BEEN SPARINGLY USED. CALLED THE LAND ROVER DEALER AND HE QUOTED $8900 TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE UNIT!! UNBELIEVABLE!! ONLINE RESEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM LR2 OWNERS ARE FACING. LAND ROVER MUST PUT A RECALL AND FIX THIS IMMEDIATELY TO RETAIN THEIR REPUTATION!!
MY 2009 LAND ROVER LR2, HAS SOUNDED VERY LOUD WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I THOUGHT IT MAY HAVE JUST BEEN A TIRE ISSUE THAT THEY WERE OLD AND NEEDED ROTATED OR REPLACED. WHILE MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR AN ALARM SYSTEM REPAIR THE DEALERSHIP DID A MULTIPOINT INSPECTION. THEY SAID NOTHING WAS LEAKING OR IMMEDIATELY WRONG BUT I SHOULD GET IT BACK IN FOR A MORE THOROUGH INSPECTION. I DID AND FOUND MY REAR DIFFERENTIAL NEEDS REPLACED. FROM RESEARCHING I HAVE FOUND THIS HIS BEEN A WIDESPREAD AND KNOWN ISSUE DATING BACK TO THE 2008 MODEL. *TR
THE LR2 WAS DRIVEN BY OUR DAUGHTER FOR SEVERAL YEARS, PRIMARILY HIGHWAY MILEAGE TO AND FROM COLLEGE. IN EARLY 2015 THE ROVER BEGAN TO MAKE A WHINING NOISE FROM THE REAR AXLE. OVER THE COURSE OF TWO OR THREE WEEKS THE NOISE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. AFTER SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT, LAND ROVER INDICATED THAT WE HAD A DAMAGED REAR DIFFERENTIAL THAT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR APPROXIMATELY $2500.00. I'VE OWNED A FAIR NUMBER OF VEHICLES AND DO KNOW A NUMBER OF AUTO MECHANICS. NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE EVER HEARD OF REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILING AT APPROXIMATELY 50K MILES. I PRESSED THE SERVICE MANAGER FOR AN ANSWER AND HE REFERRED ME TO THE MAIN HEADQUARTERS OF LAND ROVER. THEY REFUSED REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY AND FAILED TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR THE REPAIR. ONCE AGAIN PRESSING THE SERVICE MANAGER, THE OPTION TO REPAIR AND NOT FULLY REPLACE THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS OFFERED WITH A 10% DEALER DISCOUNT. IT IS APPARENT FROM GOOGLE SEARCHES THAT THIS REAR DIFFERENTIAL DESIGN FLAW IS WELL KNOWN TO LAND ROVER AND COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED THROUGH INCREASED MAINTENANCE. IT IS NOW A MONEY MAKER FOR LAND ROVER ON THEIR LOWER END VEHICLES.
OUR LR2 HAS A FAILING REAR DIFFERENTIAL WHICH APPEARS TO BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH LR2S. DANGER OF REAR DIFFERENTIAL BREAKING/SEIZING AND CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. AT PRESENT OUR DRIVE TRAIN HAS A VERY LOUD AND NOTICEABLE HUMMING SOUND.
I BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW IN 2009 ( WAS USED AS A RETIRED LOANER FOR 4 MONTHS- HAD 7000 MILES ON IT WHEN BOUGHT) HAD THIS FOR 5 YEARS NOW, IS A LOW MILEAGE AT 59000, WOULD ONLY USE THIS TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK/HOME, DID NOT EVER ENGAGE IN ANY OFF ROADING AT ALL NOT ONCE, HAD ONLY USED THIS TERRAIN RESPONSE FEATURE MAYBE FEW TIMES IN THE LAST 2-3 WINTERS ( WHEN WE HAD SNOW); ALL THE SUDDEN I NOTICED, A LIGHT SAYING TERRAIN RESPONSE SYSTEM DE-ACTIVATED...I DON'T REMEMBER DOING OR PUSHING ANY BUTTON PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT, SO I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO LAND ROVER IN ORLAND PARK- THEY TOLD ME THAT THE TERRAIN RESPONSE SYSTEM HAD FAILED; THEY COULDN'T TELL ME WHAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH PROBLEM. THE TERRAIN RESPONSE SYSTEM IS NOT A WEAR AND TEAR THING, IT IS A SAFETY FEATURE THAT HAS FAILED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I BROUGHT UP A CASE TO THE HEAD OFFICE OF LAND ROVER OF AMERICA AND THEY REFUSE TO LOOK FURTHER INTO THIS PROBLEM, SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT; LAND ROVER IS OVER-RATED, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE AGAIN. *TR
AT APPROXIMATELY 64000 MILES MY 2009 LAND ROVER LR2 REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILED. I NOTICED A LOUD, HIGH PITCHED, HUMMING SOUND WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS. THIS SOUND PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE. IT IS SO LOUD NOW THAT YOU CANNOT TALK AT A NORMAL LEVEL WHILE THE CAR IS MOVING. LAND ROVER DIAGNOSED THIS ISSUE AND CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM. THERE IS A TECHNICAL BULLETIN THAT LR HAS DISTRIBUTED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. THEY ARE AWARE OF IT AND ARE NOT OFFERING CUSTOMERS ANY COMPENSATION. THIS PROBLEM IS PERVASIVE THROUGHOUT THIS MODEL YEAR AND 2008 LR2S - LAND ROVER SHOULD BE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ISSUE, RECALLING THOSE CARS AFFECTED, AND PROTECTING THEIR DRIVERS. *TR
REAR DIFFERENTIAL WENT AT 47K MILES! STARTED HEARING A HUMMING NOISE ON ACCELERATION THAT PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE OVER THE NEXT MONTH. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ONLINE, FINDING OUT THAT MANY PEOPLE WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AROUND 50K MILES AND THAT IT WAS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. I CALLED LAND ROVER EXPLAINING THE PROBLEM, BUT BECAUSE I WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ENTIRE COST. BUT BEFORE THEY COULD DO ANYTHING, I NEEDED TO BRING THE CAR IN AND PAY $125 SO THEY COULD PUT THE CAR ON THE LIFT AND CONFIRM IT WAS IN FACT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. IF IT WAS THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL IT WOULD COST AROUND $2500-3000! I EXPLAINED THAT THIS ISSUE IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON THE INTERNET, IN MULTIPLE LAND ROVER FORUMS AND FOR A MAJORITY OF PEOPLE IT IS HAPPENING JUST AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT, THE PART HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. I ENDED UP TAKING THE CAR TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM (FOR FREE!) AND CHARGED ME $1800. HE GOT THE PART FROM LAND ROVER, IT COST 1250 AND ADDITIONAL 100 FOR THE FLUID/OIL THAT WAS NEEDED, OTHERWISE THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY WOULD BE VOIDED. LAND ROVER YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SHOULD NOT GO ON A 5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE WITH ONLY 47K MILES! I ONLY DRIVE LOCALLY TO AND FROM WORK, AND HAVE NEVER DRIVEN THE VEHICLE OFF ROAD! THIS SHOULD BE COVERED. *TR

REF SERVICE BULLETIN NO.: TB-0081, ENGINE VENT HOSE COOLANT LEAK.COOLANT LEAK CAUSED THE FAILURE OF THE ALTERNATOR AGAIN, THIS TIME LEAVING MY CHILD STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD! GULF COAST LAND ROVER REPAIRED THE LEAK AND ALTERNATOR IN 2012 AT A COST OF $1122. BUT, DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM SO HERE I GO AGAIN! I WILL HAVE TO PAY TO TOW THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR AND LAND ROVER WILL CHARGE ME A BLOODY FORTUNE TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE VENT HOSE (AND ALTERNATOR) THAT DAMAGED THE ALTERNATOR WITH ANOTHER HOSE THAT WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 LAND ROVER LR2. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE EMITTED A HUMMING NOISE WHICH BECAME LOUDER DURING HIGHER SPEEDS. THE PROBLEM RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.
