WINDSHIELD WIPERS STOPPED WORKING DURING HEAVY RAIN WHILE DRIVING ON A 70 MPH HIGHWAY. THE FAILURE HAPPENED LONG AFTER THE WINDSHIELD WIPER LINKAGE RECALL WAS PERFORMED.*AK
VEHICLE WOULD WANDER WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, A LOUD SQUEALING SOUND WOULD COME FROM STEERING WHEEL OR COLUMN WHEN MAKING A TURN, ON COLD MORNINGS, THERE IS AN EXHAUST LEAK NOTICED FROM THE UNDERSIDE CENTER, CONTINENTAL TIRES SIZE #16, DOT #A3084531901, WEARING ON THE INSIDE EDGES. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING RACK, HOWEVER STEERING CONTINUES TO BE LOOSE. *YD
VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING OIL WAS LEAKING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM.*AK
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE CAR HAS DIED ON ME WHEN I WAS DRIVING; THE FIRST TIME WAS ON APRIL 20 RIGHT AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR.*AK
VEHICLE HAS LOST STEERING AND BRAKE POWER ON HILLS AT SPEEDS AROUND 30-35 MPH. THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN POWER IS TO CUT THE IGNITION. THIS IS AN EXTREME HEALTH HAZARD: OCCURRENCES ARE NUMEROUS AND THE DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.
TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN REPLACE (WITH A REBUILT TRANS) IN SEPT. IN NOV, WE HAD TO HAVE THE RACK REPLACED AND THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS LEAKING. THE MASTER CYLINDER COVER WAS LEAKING. ADDITIONALLY WE EXPERIENCED A GAS SMELL THROUGHOUT THE CABIN. THE LEFT FRONT WINDOW HAS HAD REPAIRS. WE HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS SQUEAKS AND RATTLES ALL OVER THE VEHICLE. TODAY WHILE DRIVING DOWN HILL THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. I HAD NO STEERING OR BRAKES AND HAD TO STOP THE VEHICLE WITH THE HAND BRAKE. THIS STALL ALMOST RESULTED IN A REAR END ACCIEDENT. LASTLY THE TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED AT APPROXIMATELY 19000 MILES.*AK
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MAZDA TRIBUTE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EMITTED A STRONG GASOLINE FUEL ODOR WHEN THE ENGINE WAS STARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 00V277002 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 156,000.
ENGINE STALLED AFTER GOING DOWN A HILL AT 35-40 MPH. NO ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. WAS ABLE TO RESTART WITHOUT FURTHER PROBLEMS.*AK
WHILE TRAVELING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE WOULD STALL WITHOUT ANY INDICATION.*AK *SLC
VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP SIGN. THE NEXT FAILURE OCCURED WHEN TRAVELING AT 40 MPH ACCELERATING ON AN ENTRANCE RAMP. THIRD FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN DECELERATING TO A STOP SIGN. ALL DASH LIGHTS COME ON AND STEERING GOES OUT, HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WILL IMMEDIATELY START AFTER PLACED IN NEUTRAL. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER ONE TIME BUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE CURRENT FAILURE BUT CAN OFFER NO SOLUTIONS. DEALER HAS ADVISED WILL CONTACT THEIR SERVICE REP.*AK
THE TRIBUTE LOSS ALL POWER COMING DOWN A MOUNTAIN PASS, I STOPPED IT ON SIDE OF ROAD TURNED OFF, CHECKED OIL, IT WAS OK, SO I STARTED IT UP AND DROVE TO THE MAZDA DEALER. THEY PUT IT IN FOR SERVICE, WHEN I PICKED IT UP THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. THERE WAS NO PAPERWORK. THIS HAPPENED COMING DOWN A MOUNTAIN PASS WHICH IS HAS SEVERAL SHARP TURNS. 3.0L ENGINE, AT 45MPH VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING, DEALER HAS INSPECTED VEHICLE AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *AK THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START BUT AFTER IT WAS STARTED, IT WOULD HESITATE WHILE DRIVING (2694 MILES). *NLM
VEHICLE STALLED 1X GOING DOWN HILL AT 40 MPH. DIFFICULT TO STEER AND BRAKE TO STOP. *AK
THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE THE TRUCK WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A FLAT, DRY ROAD AT ABOUT 40 MPH. WHEN THAT HAPPENED, THE POWER STEERING AND THE POWER BRAKES STOPPED WORKING, SO THE TRUCK WAS VERY HARD TO STEER AND TO STOP. THE DRIVER PULLED OVER AND THEN WAS ABLE TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN. THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED ONCE TO US BUT THIS IS STILL VERY SERIOUS. WE THINK THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY HAZARD FOR THIS TRUCK. *AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE STALLS AND I LOSE POWER/STEERING. AFTER SAFELY GETTING MY CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I AM ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR. THE DEALER HAS SEEN MY CAR TWICE NOW AND FINDS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, AND EXPECTS ME TO DRIVE THE DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. THIS STALLING HAS HAPPENED TWICE NOW.*AK
I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED, LOSING POWER STEERING, BRAKES, AND CLUTCH. COULD NOT RESTART, SO THE DEALERSHIP PICKED ME UP. DEALERSHIP STATED THE CLIP ON THE CLUTCH HAD BROKEN. THIS PROBLEM HAS ONLY HAPPENED THAT ONE TIME, HOWEVER ON SEVERAL OTHER OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE'S IDLING HAS GONE CRAZY AND JUMPED AND THE VEHICLE ACTED AS IF IT WERE GOING TO CUT OFF. THIS LASTED SEVERAL MINUTES AND SUBSIDED. I WAS FOUR MONTHS PREGNANT WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND WAS ALMOST HIT BY SEVERAL VEHICLES BECAUSE I HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY OFF THE ROAD. I AM NOW DRIVING AROUND WITH A SIX WEEK OLD CHILD. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A "SAFE" VEHICLE FOR MY SON. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THAT IT IS!*AK
MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS STALLING WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF OVER 40 MPH. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED TO MY VEHICLE 4 TIMES OVER THE PAST 10 MONTHS. EACH TIME THE DEALER INSISTS THAT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED, BUT THEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN. ALL FOUR TIMES THAT IT HAS HAPPENED I HAVE BEEN DRIVING ON THE SAME ROAD, WHICH IS A ONE LANE ROAD THROUGH A VERY HILLY AND CURVEY SECTION, AND HAVE ALMOST CAUSED A COLLISION EACH TIME. WHEN THE CAR STALLS, THE POWER BRAKES AND STEERING ARE LOST, MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP THE OUT OF CONTROL CAR. BECAUSE OF MY QUICK THINKING, I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, RESTART THE CAR, AND PUT IT BACK INTO DRIVE IN ENOUGH TIME TO AVOID A COLLISION. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE RIDING IN THIS CAR WITH MY CHILDREN, AND MAZDA HAS NO IDEA HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. TWO OF MY CO-WORKERS HAVE THE SAME VEHICLE. ONE OF THEM HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM FOUR TIMES AND FINALLY HAD TO GET RID OF THE CAR BECAUSE MAZDA COULDN'T FIX IT. MY OTHER CO-WORKER HAS ONLY HAD THE PROBLEM ONCE, BUT IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A COINCIDENCE THAT THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE I KNOW WITH THIS CAR ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. THIS CAR IS A HAZARD TO ALL DRIVERS ON THE ROAD.*AK
VEHICLE GOING UPHILL, ENGINE STOPPED, BRAKES WERE USED TO STOP VEHICLE FROM ROLLING DOWNHILL, ENGINE LIGHT, BATTERY LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT CAME ON. NO COMPONENTS WORKING INSIDE OF THE CAR EXCEPT THE WINDOWS. CAR REMAINED STATIONARY FOR 20 MINUTES WAITING ON HELP AND THEN STARTED AFTER SEVERAL TRIES. SLIGHT SHIMMY WHILE DRIVING TO THE DEALER, ALONG WITH TACHOMETER JUMPING ABOUT ON AT A STEADY SPEED. *AK
AFTER 7000 MILES THE CONSUMER NOTICED THAT BOTH FRONT TIRES WERE NEARLY BALD, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DISCOVERED THAT THE FRONT TIRE HAD BEEN GROSSLY MISALIGNED. NLM
CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED TO THE POINT OF IT BEING TOTALED. *AK
THE VEHICLE WAS ON LOCAL ROAD AND STEERING AND BRAKES WERN'T RESPONDING. WAS ABLE TO COAST ALL THE WAY DOWN THE HILL. ONCE CONSUMER CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, VEHICLE STARTED UP. DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF PROBLEM.*AK *SLC
VEHICLE WAS GOING 30MPH WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE 8 CAR LENGTHS AHEAD STOPPED SHORT AND CAUSED A CHAIN RECATION. CONSUMER WAS IN A REAREND COLLISION, AND AIR BAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. CONSUMER SUFFERED A CONCUSION/ WIPLASH,PROBLEMS TO CERVICAL SPINE AND A HERNIA DISK. INSURANCE AJUSTER INSPECTED DAMAGES, BUT DIDN'T DTERMINE IF AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. MAZDA SENT CONSUMER BACK TO INSURANCE COMPANY, AND WAS NOT SHOWING ANY CONCERN.*AK
BRAKES HAVE FAILED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, ABS LIGHT CONTINUOUSLY ON, HAS BEEN BACK TO DEALER 4 TIMES. I HAVE ONLY DRIVEN CAR FOR 2 DAYS IN CLOSE TO 3 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. I HAVE DEMANDED A REFUND OF PURCHASE BASED ON LEMON LAW WITH NO RESPONSE FROM DEALER OR MAZDA.. I DO NOT HAVE THE MAZDA OR EVEN A LOANER AT THIS TIME. CAR HAS NOW BEEN IN SHOP FOR OVER A MONTH THIS 4TH TIME.
DRIVING AT APPROX 40-45 MPH AND ENTIRE SUV SHUTDOWN MECHANICALLY AND ELETRICALLY. COASTED TO STOP COULD NOT RE-START AGAIN, UNTIL 10-15 MINUTES LATER. THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE AND THE SAME SYMPTOM/S. *AK
OUR ENGINE JUST SHUTS OFF WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT AS YOU ARE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THIS RESULTS IN A LOSS OF BRAKES AND STEERING. THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN CONTROL IS TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND TRY TO GET IT STARTED AGAIN. PER YOUR CUSTOMER COMPLAINT DATABASE AND OTHER WEB SITES I HAVE RESEARCHED, THERE ARE A LOT OF TRIBUTES AND ESCAPES DOING THIS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM! HOW MANY TIMES DOES THIS HAVE TO BE REPORTED BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE? MAZDA CONTINUES TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR MONTHS NOW, TELLING OWNERS, LIKE MYSELF, THAT THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THEY CAN'T FIX IT. THEY OFTEN REFUSE TO GIVE CUSTOMERS COPIES OF REPAIR PAPERWORK WHEN THEY PICK UP THEIR VEHICLE. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GET KILLED BEFORE THIS IS RESOLVED? THE DRIVER SIDE MIRROR SHAKES SO BADLY THAT THE IMAGE IN THE MIRROR IS SO BLURRED YOU CAN NOT SEE ANYTHING. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER, THEY REPLACED THE MIRROR AND IT STILL DID THE SAMETHING. I COMPLAINED A SECOND TIME AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO SINCE THEY ALREADY REPLACED IT ONCE. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS A LOT OF WIND NOISE AND A HOWLING NOISE WHEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 50 + MPH. IT GETS SO LOUD THAT IT GIVE ME A HEADACHE. I TOLD THE DEALER 3 TIMES ABOUT THIS ALREADY. THEY CHANGED OUT THE WINDOW SEALS OUT 2 TIMES AND THIS HAS NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO RESOLVE THESE 2 DEFECTS? THANKS.*AK
NEW MASTER CYLINDER WAS INSTALLED 7/24/2001, AND STILL HAVING BRAKE FAILURE/ABS LIGHT ON. *AK

WHILE TRAVELING BETWEEN 30 AND 40 MPH ENGINE STALLED, CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER ASSISTED COMPONENTS. DEALERSHIP WAS IN POSSESSION OF VEHICLE FOR TWO WEEKS, AND COULD NOT REPRODUCE PROBLEM. *AK *JB
I WERE DRIVING DOWN A HILL WHEN MY CAR ENGINE DIES WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE (RADIO DIES, A.C., ENGINE, AND STEERING WHEEL TIGHENS. THIS IS THE SECOND MAZDA TRIBUTE I OWNED IN A YEAR WITH THE SAME PROBLEM THAT THE COMPANY CAN'T FIX. THE OTHER S ARE NOT AS MAJOR. I HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE FOR TWO OCCURRENCES. EACH TIME I WAS COMING DOWN A HILL AND THEN ALL OF MY DASH LIGHTS CAME ON (CHECK ENGINE, OIL, ETC.). I WAS UNABLE TO STEER OR GIVE IT GAS EASILY. EACH TIME I WAS NOT IN A SAFE LOCATION, SO I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND THE CAR RESTARTED FINE. I HAVE HAD THE CAR AT THE DEALER I PURCHASED IT FROM SINCE IT OCCURRED THE 2ND TIME WHICH WAS OVER A MONTH AND A HALF AGO. THEY HAVE TOLD ME NUMEROUS TIMES THAT IT IS NOT DOING IT FOR THEM. THE SERVICE MANAGER CAUSED ME TWO WEEKS AGO AND TOLD ME THE MAZDA MANUFACTURER WAS IN THEIR OFFICE AND HE WAS AWARE OF TWO SIMILAR PROBLEMS IN TWO OTHER MAZDA TRIBUTES. I JUST WANTED YOUR OFFICE TO BE AWARE OF THIS. I AM VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO GET OFF THE ROAD ON THE 2ND OCCURRENCE AND IT WAS VERY SCARY. WHILE TRAVELING ON A DOWN GRADE AT 35 TO 40 MPH ENGINE WILL STALL INTERMITTENTLY. DEALERSHIP HAS EXAMINED VEHICLE PRIOR TO LAST INCIDENT, AND REPLACED EEC RELAY WHICH FAILED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *AK *ET

THIS VEHICLE HAS STALLED ON NUMEROUS OCASSIONS WHEN BEING DRIVEN, THIS USUALLY OCCURS WHEN BEING DRIVEN BELOW 35 MILES PER HOUR DRIVING DOWN A HILL. EACH TIME THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED IT HAS CAUSED MY HUSBAND AND I TO HAVE NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AT ALL. *AK
ENGINE HAS STALLED THREE TIMES WHEN DRIVING BETWEEN 35 AND 40 MPH, AND GOING DOWNHILL ON 25-JUN-2001, 01-OCT-2001, AND 30-JAN-2002. VEHICLE WAS GOING 10-15MPH AND STEPPED ON GAS TO GO 20-25MPH. AND RPMS WERE STICKING,AND BRAKING MADE IT 80-85% LESS EFFECTIVE. DEALER IS CONVINCED THE PROBLEM IS THE FLOOR MATS.
I HAD THE TRIBUTE TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE FOR A SO CALLED FIX, BUT I FEEL THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. THE REASON I FEEL THIS WAY IS, BECAUSE WHEN IT WAS IN THE SECOND TIME FOR A FIX THEY DID THE SAME THING AS THE FIRST TIME.*AK
I PURCHASED A 2001 TRIBUTE ON SUNDAY 6/17/01WITH 420 MILES ON IT. TWO DAYS LATER TUESDAY 6/19/01 THE ENGINE COMPLETLY LOCKED UP ON ME TWICE IN THE SAME DAY. IT NOW HAS ONLY 562 MILES ON IT. LUCKILY BOTH TIMES I WAS ABLE TO AVOID A WRECK. THE ENGINE TOTALLY SHUTS DOWN, MEANING NO STEERING, NO BRAKING. I WAS ABLE TO STOP BY USING THE EMERGANCY BRAKE AFTER STOPPPING I HAD TO PUT THE CAR INTO PARK IN WHICH IT THEN RESTARTED. THIS ALL CAME IF NO WARNING AT ALL. I IMMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR BACK. WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A BIG PUDDLE OF WATER, WATER WAS TOO HIGH AND IT WENT INTO VEHICLE'S AIR FILTER AND CAUSED HYDRO LOCKING TO ENGINE, CAUSING ENGINE TO DIE. CONSUMER FEELS LIKE A SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GO THROUGH WATER WITH OUT STALLING OUT. THERE'S A RECALL ON FORD EXPLORER'S ENGINE FOR FAN BEING TOO LOW TO THE GROUND. CONSUMER'S VEHICLE ENGINE WAS MADE BY FORD AND SHOULD BE RECALLED ALSO. CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED THE DEALER. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
I GOT IN MY CAR AFTER WORK AND ATTEMPTED TO PUT ON MY SEAT BELT. IT WOULD NOT LATCH. I TRIED FOR OVER 10 MINUTES, TO NO AVAIL. I HAD TO DRIVE HOME APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES AT MIDNIGHT ON THE FREEWAY, NOT WEARING A SEATBELT. THIS WAS VERY FRIGHTENING BECAUSE I ALWAYS WEAR A SEATBELT. IN ADDITION, IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE WITHOUT A SEATBELT IN CALIFORNIA. *AK
THIS IS A SECOND FAILURE, THE FIRST OCCURRING ON 05/30/01. THE ENGINE QUIT WHILE CROSSING RAILROAD TRACKS WITH TWO PASSENGERS. I COASTED ALMOST CLEAR OF TRACKS, STOPPED THE VEHICLE, PUT IT IN PARK AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE AFTER TWO OR THREE ATTEMPTS. THIS SAME TYPE OF FAILURE OCCURRED, AT THE SAME LOCATION, WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ABOUT A LITTLE MORE THAN A WEEK EARLIER.*AK
ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON, AND CONSUMER SMELLED FUEL INSIDE VEHICLE. DEALER INFORMED HER THAT FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING. BUT THAT FUEL TANKS WERE ON BACK ORDER. COULD NOT GIVE HER A TIME FRAME, BUT ASSURED HER VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE COULD JUST SHUT DOWN. CONSUMER LOSES ALL POWER, LIKE POWER STEERING AND ABS, AND FEW OTHER ITEMS IN VEHICLE.*AK DEALER DIAGNOSED FOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE CUSTOMER CONCERN. *TT
VEHICLE STALLS INTERMITTENTLY AROUND 40 MPH. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO DEALER 3 TIMES, CANNOT FIND CAUSE.*JB
