TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, THE VEHICLE WOULD EMIT A STRONG GASOLINE FUEL INSIDE THE CABIN. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST, WHICH CONFIRMED A LEAKING FUEL SENDING UNIT THAT CAUSED FUEL TO LEAK BEHIND THE REAR SEATS. THE DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THE CONTACT DID NOT CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,000.
STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE AFTER FILLING UP GAS TANK. ANY RECALLS? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES-BENZ E320. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, IT WAS HACKED INTO ELECTRONICALLY. THE BRAKES, AIR BAGS, RADIO, AND ALL OTHER ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS WERE ABLE TO BE CONTROLLED, INCLUDING THE VEHICLE'S SOFTWARE. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE UNABLE TO ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 181,514.
AFTER SHUTTING OFF MY VEHICLE AND GETTING OUT I SMELLED STRONG GASOLINE SMELL AROUND MY VEHICLE. AT FIRST I COULDN'T DETERMINE WHERE THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM AND THOUGHT IT POSSIBLY IT WAS COMING FROM ANOTHER VEHICLE AROUND ME. THE NEXT DAY, IN THE MORNING BEFORE GOING TO WORK I SMELLED GAS AROUND MY VEHICLE AND AT THIS POINT I KNEW IT WAS COMING FROM MY VEHICLE. I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND LET IT RUN AS I WALKED AROUND IT AND NOTICED A PUDDLE OF GASOLINE ON MY DRIVEWAY UNDER DRIVER SIDE BACK SEAT IN THAT AREA. AFTER SOME RESEARCH ONLINE I PULLED BACK SEAT OUT AND REMOVED COVER TO FUEL SENDING UNIT AND FOUND A LEAK FROM A CRACK IN THE PLASTIC WHERE THE FUEL DELIVERY LINE CONNECTS. STARTED TO SMELL GAS FUMES IN THE GARAGE AFTER DRIVING. CONDITION WORSENED QUICKLY WITHIN WEEKS AND FILLED MY GARAGE WITH FUMES WHERE MY HOME WATER HEATER IS PLACED. DID RESEARCH SAW THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE FUEL SENDING UNIT FUEL LEAKS OUT OF THE SENDING UNIT AND COMPLAINTS THAT MB REPLACED THE UNIT WITH THE SAME FAULTY UNIT SO THE CONDITION WILL REAPPEAR....VERY DANGEROUS. THIS CAUSES FAULT CODES, THE ENGINE DOES NOT GET GASOLINE AND SPUTTERS AND CUTS OUT. I HAD TO MOVE THE CAR OUTSIDE BECAUSE OF THE FIRE/EXPLOSION POTENTIAL. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP, THEY ADVISED THE RECALL HAD BEEN PERFORMED ONCE ALREADY AND WOULD LOOK AT THE CAR. DEALER SENT THIS EMAIL QOUTE UNQOUTE: "BOTH SENDER UNITS FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM ARE BOTH LEAKING FROM WHERE IT EXITS THE TANK. THEY REQUIRE REPLACING THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IF NEGLECTED. PARTS AND LABOR IS $1946.08 PARTS ARE SPECIAL ORDER AND I CAN HAVE THE VEHICLE DONE WEDNESDAY. PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK SO WE CAN GET THE CAR BACK TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." AFTER REFUELING SMELL OF GASOLINE FILLED THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION BOTTOM CUSHION OF REAR SEAT WAS REMOVED TO FIND ABOUT 1 CUP OF RAW FUEL WAS UNDER THE SEAT PUDDLED UP. THIS POSES A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN FOR FIRE AND HEALTH. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 E500 MERCEDES BENZ. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, A STRONG GASOLINE FUEL ODOR WAS NOTICED THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE AND IN THE CONTACT'S GARAGE. THE ODOR WOULD DIMINISH AFTER THE FUEL TANK HAD REACHED ONE HALF FULL OR BELOW. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED OR INSPECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE BRAKES FAILED WHEN PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO BRAKE PEDAL, THERE WAS ONLY 20% OF BRAKE POWER. *TR
REF: NHTSA ACTION# PE12001 STARTED TO SMELL GAS INSIDE CAR WHILE DRIVING. WASN'T SURE WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. ALSO NOTICED STRONG SMELL FROM OUTSIDE THE CAR. NEXT MORNING DROVE THE CAR AGAIN BUT SMELL ONLY CAME BACK AFTER DRIVING FOR SHORT PERIOD. I ALSO STARTED TO SEE A PATTERN ON HOT DAYS, NOT SURE IF RELATED BUT WAS THINKING IT WAS ONLY ON HOT DAY AND WHEN TANK IS FULL. AT THIS POINT I'M UNSURE AS I KNOW GET THE GAS SMELL RANDOMLY EVEN WHEN GAS TANK IS NOT FULL AND NON WARM DAYS. CAR IS BECOMING A WORRY TO DRIVE AND WILL NOR PUT ANY OF MY FAMILY IN IT. THERE IS A STRONG FUEL ODOR INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR IS SO STRONG SOMETIMES THAT IT GIVES ME A HEADACHE. STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE CAR WHILE IDLING. MY WIFE AND I PICKED UP OUR CHILDREN FROM THE BABY SITTER'S RESIDENCE. I LEFT THE CAR IDLING IN THE DRIVEWAY OF HER RESIDENCE. UPON RETURNING TO THE VEHICLE, WE NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE OF THE CABIN OF THE CAR, ESPECIALLY IN THE BACK SEAT. AFTER REMOVING THE BACK SEAT, I REMOVED THE COVERS FOR THE FUEL SENDING UNITS AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A POOL OF GASOLINE COVERING THE OUTSIDE OF THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THE TOPIC, I CAME ACROSS AT LEAST 80 DOCUMENTED CASES OF THE SAME OR SIMILAR ISSUES FILED UNDER EA13003. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD MY VEHICLE TO THIS COMPLAINT IN HOPES OF GARNERING ACTION ON THE PART OF MBUSA TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE CDC RECOGNIZES THE DANGERS ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN TO PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO GAS FUMES. HELP! *TR
AFTER DRIVING THE CAR ABOUT 20 MILES (30 MINS), I SMELLED GAS. EVER SINCE THAT DAY THE SMELL OF GAS HAS BEEN COMING FROM REAR DRIVERS SIDE. IT STARTED OFF FAINT BUT NOW HAS BECOME STRONGER. *TR
WE START NOTICE GAS FUMES SMELL WHEN WE FILLED OUR MERCEDES-BENZ UP WITH GAS & AS WE DROVE OUR VEHICLE THE GAS SMELL WOULD STOP, APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES PLUS. AS THE MONTHS WENT ON THE INCIDENT WOULD GET WORST AT EACH FILL-UP. SOMETIME AROUND FEBRUARY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON SO WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO REPAIR SHOP & THEY FOUND GAS LEAKAGE AROUND THE FUEL PUMP UNDER THE BACK SEAT. AS OF TODAY THE ISSUE IS STILL GOING ON WITH THE GAS SMELL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK AND THE FUEL SENDING UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

NOXIOUS GASOLINE ODOR EMITTING INTO CABIN. LIFTED UP REAR SEAT TO FIND PUDDLE OF GASOLINE GATHERING ON TOP OF FUEL TANK, LEAKING FROM FUEL PUMP UNIT. REFERENCE NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE12001. *TR
ONE WEEK AFTER A VISIT TO PALM SPRINGS, CA., WHERE THE AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 116, I NOTICED A SMELL OF GASOLINE AFTER REFUELING. THE FOLLOWING 3 WEEKS, THE ODOR WORSENED WHEN REFUELED. THIS A.M., I PULLED THE REAR SEAT AND COVER PLATE ON THE LEFT SIDE AND FOUND POOLED GASOLINE IN THE CAVITY PROVIDED FOR THE SENDING UNIT ATOP THE FUEL TANK. AS A LEAK IN THIS AREA HAD BEEN ADDRESSED BY THE DEALER IN 2011, I FELT THIS WAS AN "ON GOING " ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY THE MB DEALER. AS OF THIS WRITING, I'VE NOT FOUND A SYMPATHETIC EAR AT MY LOCAL MB DEALER, YET I MUST CORRECT THE PROBLEM AS SOON AS I "BURN OFF" 50% OF THE GASOLINE SO AS TO MAKE THE REPAIR SAFER. MY HOME HAS THE GAS WATER HEATER LOCATED IN THE GARAGE AND WITH LIQUID FUEL PRESENT ATOP THE TANK, I'M FORCED TO LEAVE MY E500 OUTSIDE! I VIEW THIS AS A SAFETY AND, IN CALIFORNIA, AN EPA ISSUE AND IT SHOULD BE DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY BY STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES. *TR
STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE IN AND AROUND CAR AFTER FILLING UP. SMELL REMAINS UNTIL FUEL LEVEL IS CONSUMED BELOW 3/4 OF A TANK. FUEL SPILLS FROM THE CAR WHEN ACCELERATING. WHEN CAR IS FILLED WITH FUEL THE PUMP IS TURNED ON UNTIL IT SHUTS OFF, NEVER TOPPED OFF. CAR WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IN CALIFORNIA WHEN NEW AND IS OPERATED IN COLORADO BETWEEN 5000 AND 10000 FEET IN ELEVATION. CAN NO LONGER PARK THE CAR IN THE GARAGE DUE TO OVERWHELMING FUMES. I AM CONCERNED THIS IS A HEALTH HAZARD AS WELL AS A FIRE DANGER AWAITING A SOURCE OF IGNITION NOT TO MENTION ANY ADDED MAGNITUDE IT MAY CONTRIBUTE IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT. *TR

THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THE SWITCH LAMP LIGHT AND THE HYDRAULICS SPC PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 166,000.
ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO THERE WAS A FAINT SMELL OF GASOLINE INSIDE THE CAR THEN EARLY LAST WEEK ON A SHORT TRIP <2MILES THE SMELL OF FUEL BECAME SO STRONG THAT IS WAS OVERWHELMING AND NAUSEATING AND I HAD TO RETURN HOME. AFTER SOME INTERNET RESEARCH I PULLED THE BACK SEAT AND COVERS AND BOTH FUEL UNITS ON TOP OF THE TANK HAD LARGE PUDDLES OF GASOLINE ON TOP OF THEM. PLEASE HELP GET THIS SAFETY ISSUE FIXED. *TR

I TOOK THE REAR SEAT OUT OF THE VEHICLE TO ACCESS THE AREA ALONG WITH SOME OTHER NUTS AND BOLTS AND FOUND A POOL OF FUEL SITTING ON THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. AFTER PUTTING EVERYTHING BACK TOGETHER I NOTICED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE IT HAD LEAKED ONTO THE PAVEMENT. I AM VERY CONCERNED THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE AND MERCEDES IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HASNT DONE ANYTHING TO ADDRESS THE SITUATION. YOUR ASSISTANCE IN THIS MATTER IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU *TR
CODE: 4A30 ENGINE CONTROL MODULE NOT IDENTIFIED OR INCORRECT CONTROL MODULE. CODE: 54F0 CAN COMMUNICATION WITH CONTROL UNIT TRANSMISSION CONTROL IS SPORADICALLY DISTURBED. SAFETY ISSUE: I RECENTLY GOT OFF THE FREEWAY, CAME TO A STOP, AND THEN ATTEMPT TO PROCEED NORMALLY WITH THE VEHICLE NOW STUCK IN 5TH (OR WHATEVER THE SENSOR CHOOSES) GEAR, AND NO POWER STEERING- THERE IS A REASONABLE USER PRESUMPTION THAT THE CAR WOULD ACCELERATE NORMALLY AND BE ABLE TO SAFELY JOIN TRAFFIC....INSTEAD IT CRAWLS FORWARD AT A FEW MILES AN HOUR INTO POTENTIAL HARMS WAY WITH NO WAY TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE NORMALLY, THEREBY LEAVING THE DRIVER AND OUR CHILDREN IN DANGER. ON HOT DAYS THERE IS A STRONG ODOR OF GAS INSIDE THE CAR. WHICH MAKES THE CAR UNBEARABLE TO DRIVE AND NOT SURE IF IT'S SAFE! WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FULL, THE CAR SMELLS LIKE PURE GAS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE FIXED, BUT THEY DID A "PATCH" AND MADE THE SMELL SO BAD THAT IT GAVE US ALL HEADACHES EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN. THE DEALERSHIP HAS HAD MY CAR FOR 3 MONTHS NOW AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. MERCEDES NEEDS TO FIX THE ISSUE, OR GIVE ME A NEW CAR!
OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS I HAVE EXPERIENCED A CONTINUED OVERWHELMING FUEL ODOR COMING FROM BOTH THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF THE CAR. I FILLED UP A FULL TANK OF FUEL AND DROVE HOME TO PARK THE CAR IN THE GARAGE. SEVERAL HOURS LATER I NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL INSIDE THE CAR. AFTER LOOKING AROUND I NOTICED IT WAS COMING FROM THE BACK. HAVING READ POSTS ON MBWORLD.ORG IN THE PAST I LIFTED UP THE BACK SEAT ONLY TO FIND FRESH FUEL POOLING BY THE PUMP AND SENDING UNIT. I CALLED THE DEALER SHORTLY AFTER WHO TOLD ME I WOULD NEED A NEW TANK, FUEL PUMP AND SENDING UNIT TOTALLY ALMOST $3000. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR THIS REPAIR AND THERE IS NO RECALL YET SO IF MY CAR BLOWS UP THEN MBUSA WILL BE HELD LIABLE AS THIS IS VERY COMMON PROBLEM. *TR
AFTER FILLING TANK & PARKING IN GARAGE, NOTICED STRONG FUEL SMELL THE NEXT MORNING. SUBSIDED ONCE FUEL LEVEL WAS AROUND 3/4 OF THE TANK. NEXT TIME FILLED UP, SAME THING OCCURRED. CALLED MERCEDES & STATED POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WITH FUEL SENDING UNIT SEALS. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP ON MAY 24TH AND STATED FUEL SENDING UNITS MUST BE REPLACED ALONG WITH FUEL SHUT OFF SWITCH AND THE FUEL TANK AS WELL DUE TO HAIRLINE CRACKS AT NECK CAUSING THE LEAK. TOTAL COST IS $3100. I HAVE SEARCHED ONLINE & NOTICED THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE PLAGUING THESE CARS. I UNDERSTAND ISSUES WILL HAPPEN, BUT GIVEN THE NATURE OF THESE & THE BROADNESS OF VEHICLES AFFECTED THAT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUED. I WOULD LIKE MBUSA TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THESE EXPENSES. *TR

I FILED WITH YOUR AGENCY LAST YEAR AND NEVER HEARD BACK I AM THE OWNER OF A 2005 E CLASS . AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO MERCEDES , THE FUEL TANK WAS REPLACED AT THE DEALERSHIP HERE IN SEATTLE LAST YEAR.I PAID FOR THE REPAIRS AND MERCEDES PAID FOR THE NEW TANK. MY OUT OF POCKET FOR THIS REPAIR WAS CLOSE TO $2000.00 IT HAS BEEN APPRX 15 MONTHS AND I HAVE NOTICE AGAIN SOME FUEL SMELL INSIDE MY VEHICLE. OF COURSE I WAS NOT GIVEN ANY PAPERWORK FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL TANK, BUT IS ON RECORD AT THE DEALERSHIP. I FELL LIKE I AM DRIVING ON TOP OF A FUEL BOMB AND WILL I BE THE 1ST VICTIM OF A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. AFTER FILLING UP THE FUEL TANK...STRONG FUEL ODOR INSIDE THE VEHICLE. *TR
I SMELL FUEL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR AFTER FILLING THE TANK. I SMELL THIS MORE IN COOLER MONTHS THAN WARMER MONTHS. I'VE BEEN SMELLING FUEL FOR OVER 2 YEARS NOW BUT DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF IT. I HAVE RECENTLY HAD AN ENGINE LIGHT COME ON AND DID SOME RESEARCH. THE FAULT POINTS TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. I'M WAGERING THAT WHEN I REMOVE THE BACK SEAT, I'M GOING TO FIND EVIDENCE OF A FUEL LEAK LIKE MANY OTHERS ONLINE HAVE FOUND. THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN IN ANY RECORDED ACCIDENTS THAT I'M AWARE OF. IT'S USED PREMIUM FUEL SINCE I'VE OWNED THE CAR AT 50,000 MILES. I NOW HAVE OVER 163,000. I ALSO TAKE ADDITIONAL INTEREST IN THE FUEL ISSUE NOW THAT I HAVE A CHILD IN THE BACK SEAT THAT HAS ALSO COMMENTED ABOUT THE SMELL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, A STRONG OF ODOR FUEL EMITTED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. ADDITIONALLY, FUEL LEAKED ONTO THE GROUND CONTINUOUSLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AFTER REFUELING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FUEL TANK WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.

FUEL LEAK, SMELL OF GASOLINE IN GARAGE. POSSIBLE LEAKING FUEL TANK, LEAKING FUEL SENDING UNIT OR FUEL SENSOR MALFUNCTION. IT IS DANGEROUS AND MAY CAUSE FIRE OR EXPLOSION DUE TO THE FUEL LEAK. IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED TO FIX THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE. *TR
AT SOME POINT AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED A STRONG GAS SMELL COMING FROM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE MY CAR. IT WAS SO STRONG THAT IT PERMEATED THE ROOMS OF MY HOME CLOSEST TO THE GARAGE WHERE I PARK MY CAR. I LATER REALIZED THE STRONG SMELL OCCURRED AFTER FILLING UP MY TANK, AND DIMINISHED SIGNIFICANTLY AFTER THE TANK REACHED ABOUT HALF FULL. SINCE THE FUMES ARE GREATEST WHEN MY TANK IS MORE THAN HALF FULL, I LIVE WITH FILLING IT HALF WAY OR LESS. WHEN I HAPPEN TO FORGET AND FILL THE TANK TO CAPACITY, I HAVE TO PARK THE CAR OUTSIDE MY GARAGE, AND DRIVE WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN. THE FUMES INSIDE THE CAR ARE UNBEARABLE, AND I AM CONCERNED FOR MY HEALTH AND THE HEALTH OF MY SON. SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, I ASKED A MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THEY COULD DO. I NEVER HEARD BACK. I CALLED AGAIN A FEW DAYS AGO. I TOLD THEM THE ISSUE, AND ASKED WHAT THE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS COULD BE, AND WHAT THE APPROXIMATE REPAIR COST WILL BE. I WAS TOLD THEY'VE SEEN A COUPLE OF PROBLEMS THAT CAUSE THE FUEL SMELL: A LEAK IN SOME PART OF THE FUEL SYSTEM (CAN'T REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT); AND, THE GAS TANK ITSELF. I OWN A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E 320. I NOTICED THE SMELL OF GASOLINE COMING FROM THE CAR, ESPECIALLY AFTER FILLING UP, FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. IT HAD GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE OVER TIME, SO I HAD IT CHECKED EARLY ON BY MY MECHANIC BUT OBSERVED NO LEAKS. THE GAS VAPORS CONTINUED TO BECOME WORSE, SO BAD THAT I HAD TO PARK THE CAR OUTSIDE FOR FEAR OF EXPLOSION AND/OR FIRE. MY GAS WATER HEATER IS IN THE GARAGE AND MY CHILDRENS BEDROOM IS ABOVE IT. EARLY ON, MY WHOLE FAMILY BEGAN HAVING HEADACHES, NAUSEA, AND BURNING WATERY EYES. WE NOW KNOW IT WAS GASOLINE VAPORS EMITTING FROM THE FAULTY GAS TANK SEALS WHICH ARE LOCATED BELOW THE REAR SEATS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER NEAR MY HOME; WALTERS MERCEDES BENZ. THE SERVICE AGENT, [XXX], CALLED AND SAID THAT THE SEALS IN THE GAS TANK WERE LEAKING AND IT WOULD COST $750 TO REPLACE THEM. ALSO, THE TECHNICIAN OBSERVED SOME POSSIBLE LEAKING ON ANOTHER HOSE TO THE TANK AND IT WOULD BE $2,400 TO HAVE THE WHOLE TANK REPLACED. I FOUND THIS OUTRAGEOUS, BUT HAD NO OTHER CHOICE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT MERCEDES HAD A RECALL BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEM TO OTHER CARS SIMILAR TO MINE. THE SERVICE MANAGERS AT WALTERS SAID THAT MY VIN NUMBER DIDN'T MATCH THE RECALL. SO, I CALLED MB USA (800-367-6372) TO HAVE A CASE OPENED. [XXX] (EXT [XXX]) IS THE CASE INVESTIGATOR ASSIGNED. HIS SUPERVISOR IS [XXX]. (EXT [XXX]). I EXPLAINED THE ABOVE TO ANDREW H. WHO STATED THAT HE WOULD BE CONTACTING WALTERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANAGER AND GET BACK TO ME WITHIN 48 HOURS. MB USA REFUSED TO ADMIT OR SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE CAR HAS A STRONG GASOLINE SMELL BOTH IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AS WELL AS OUTSIDE THE CAR AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK. THIS SMELL PERSISTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS, UNTIL THE TANK GETS TO BELOW 3/4 FULL, AT WHICH TIME THE FUEL SMELL GOES AWAY. THE STRONG FUEL SMELL RETURNS WHEN THE TANK IS AGAIN REFILLED TO FULL CAPACITY. THE SEALS AROUND THE FUEL PUMP AND SENDING UNIT AT THE TOP OF THE TANK WERE REPLACED TWICE WITH FACTORY MERCEDES-BENZ PARTS BY A QUALIFIED MECHANIC, AND THIS HAS NOT STOPPED THE PROBLEM. THERE APPEARS TO BE A LEAK IN THE GAS TANK OR OTHER FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENT. THE MECHANIC INSPECTED THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND DID NOT SEE ANY FUEL LEAKS AT THAT POINT, LEAVING ME TO SUSPECT A LEAKING GAS TANK. *TR
AFTER I FINISHED PUMPING FUEL MY PASSENGER IN THE BACK SMELLED GASOLINE. I HAD JUST PUT FUEL SO I PULLED OVER AND NOTICED MY REAR PASSENGER WHEEL WELL WAS SOAKED WITH GASOLINE. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS CAN BE NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. SEEMS THERE IS A HOLE NEAR WHERE THE GAS ENTERS THE PIPE THAT GOES DOWN TO THE GAS TANK.

AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION THE CONTACT ONLY PUT A HALF TANK OF GASOLINE TO ENSURE THAT THE FUEL WOULD NOT OVERFLOW OR THE STRONG ODOR WOULD NOT EMIT FROM THE GASOLINE TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL TANK CAP WAS LEAKING AND THE LEFT AND RIGHT FUEL TANKS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED, DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA13003 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
